Mercedes is known for making a car for every niche, unfilled niches and niches Mercedes has invented in the same way that Apple continues to pull off similar feats. In 2008, if the average consumer were asked if they wanted a huge iPhone that doesn’t make phone calls for more money (the iPad), they would have fired off a resounding no with a condescending chuckle.

Now, many love them; the situation is similar with the new Mercedes E Superlight. Mercedes has taken the reliably selling E-Class and reinvented it, shaving nearly a half a ton off the original curb weight. The cost for this fuel cell powered carbon fiber E is going to be somewhere between the CLS and the S-Class, so don’t expect them to grow on trees.

Cars such as the CLS and the Audi A7 are visually stunning to many, and this most likely translates to their success in ways that the rather foul BMW 5er GT has failed. This new Merc seems to accomplish similar feats if the artist’s rendition is any indication of things to come.

Technically what we are looking at is a four door coupe, which thanks to the carbon fiber, gets away without a B-pillar: think of the current E coupe or the W124 E coupe but with suicide rear doors and an airy feel with all windows rolled down.

When? you say, most likely by 2015, and by 2017 Mercedes expects to move 20,000 examples. Mercedes means for this to be the gateway drug into the fuel cell world; only time will tell as to the feasibility of this many fuel cell cars and of course fueling stations. The car may be beyond concept stage, but if Mercedes chooses to drop the fuel cell in favor of a traditional or hybrid system, it still should be a success given the aforementioned body style.

Mercedes-Benz will be showing up to the 2012 Detroit Auto Show with not one but two E-Class Hybrid sedans. One of the E-Class hybrids will be powered by a diesel engine while the other will be powered by a gasoline unit.

The Mercedes-Benz E400 Hybrid with the gasoline-electric powertrain will be offered in the United States and will eventually make its way to China. The Mercedes-Benz E300 Bluetec Hybrid with a diesel setup will go on sale in Europe. It will be available as a sedan and a station wagon.

At the main core of both E-Class hybrid models will be what Mercedes-Benz calls the “intelligent modular hybrid concept.” The setup includes a lithium-ion battery pack and a 20kW electric motor that produces 184 pound-feet of torque. The system also features other fuel-saving technologies including a stop-start system, and a regenerative braking system.

The Mercedes-Benz E400 Hybrid combines that setup to a 3.5 liter V6 gasoline engine making 302-hp and 263 lb-ft. Estimated fuel-economy comes in at 24/31 mpg (city/highway). The E300 Bluetec Hybrid puts that system together with a 3.0 liter V6 turbodiesel making 201-hp and 369 lb-ft of torque. Fuel-economy is estimated at 56 mpg.

Stay tuned for more details.

Ever wonder what the most profitable vehicles are of modern times? Well, while many of you probably don’t care it’s still something nice to know. Bernstein Research in London has put together a list of the top global money makers since 1990 and the list isn’t really all that surprising.

Analyst Max Warburton says that the big winners consist of high price tags, huge volume and long periods of production the spread development cost of building the car over a long period of time. Warburton and his team found three categories of profitable vehicles including Japanese mid-sized sedans, German luxury cars and of course, American full-sized pickups.

Not surprisingly, American pickups were the really big money makers with their huge volume. German vehicles like the BMW 3 and 5 Series, Mercedes-Benz S Class and E Class and the Porsche 911 came in second. Japanese sedans had the toughest times to high profits due to their low price points.

Bernstein Research’s 12 most profitable vehicles since 1990.

1. Ford F series
2. GM full-sized pickups
3. Dodge Ram
4. Mercedes S class

As time goes on, the automobile industry has been proving that green motoring need not be boring. And to add to the case, Mercedes-Benz tuner Brabus has just unveiled a new EV based on the E-Class. Unfortunately however, Brabus made clear that their EV is just a prototype and isn’t for sale. Either way, let’s see what they’re on about.

Brabus took the Mercedes-Benz W221 E220 CDI BlueEFFICIENCY and added a hybrids system in conjunction with Protean Electric, an English electric motor manufacturer.

Featuring two individual wheel hub motors in the rear axle, the motors can provide the Brabus E220 CDI a combined extra of 67-hp while in Eco mode and an extra 107-hp when in Sport mode. Altogether with the 2.2L common-rail turbodiesel, the Brabus E220 can achieve a grand total of 215-hp and – get this – an Earth-shattering 1,180 lb-ft of torque. Up, you read that right. This comes thanks to the upgrade kit that Brabus treats the diesel with, which they call the BRABUS ECO PowerXtra D3 (V) Performance kit. Lastly, 60 mph comes up 7.4 seconds versus the normal E220’s 8.4

The Brabus E220 CDI is also capable of driving on an entirely electric mode thanks to an 18.6 kWh lithium battery. In electric mode, the Brabus E220 CDI can go up to 75 miles on one charge in Eco mode and 50 miles on Sport.

Check out the full details after the jump.

Press Release:

World Debut at the 2011 Frankfurt Motor Show IAA

BRABUS Technology Project HYBRID Based on the Mercedes-Benz E 220 CDI BlueEFFICIENCY

BRABUS (Brabus-Allee, D-46240 Bottrop, phone + 49 / (0) 2041 / 777-0, fax + 49 / (0) 2041 / 777 111, Internet www.brabus.com) combines the best of two worlds, an efficient direct-injection diesel with BRABUS ECO tuning and two electric wheel hub motors, in a world debut at the 2011 Frankfurt Motor Show IAA. The project vehicle HYBRID was developed by the BRABUS ZERO EMISSION business division, which works on alternative drive technologies, in cooperation with the German Federal Ministry for the Environment, Nature Conservation and Nuclear Safety. This car is an innovative hybrid version of the Mercedes E 220 CDI BlueEFFICIENCY known for its outstanding fuel economy ex-factory. The project vehicle has been developed to small-series-production maturity.

The BRABUS development engineers have adapted two supplemental wheel hub motors from English manufacturer Protean ELECTRIC to the rear axle of the E-Class sedan.

These alternative drives, which in Eco mode each produce 50 kW of continuous power and 80 kW in Sport mode, are designed to fit in the BRABUS Monoblock Q 19-inch wheels.

With a combined peak power output of 160 kW and a total peak torque of 1,600 Nm (1,180 lb-ft) the two electric motors supplement the existing 2.2-liter common-rail turbodiesel engine, which was equipped with a BRABUS ECO PowerXtra D3 (V) performance kit. This tuning kit consists of an auxiliary control unit that features engine mapping developed on state-of-the-art engine test benches for optimizing fuel economy and CO2 emissions.

The objective of this measure was less the power increase by 30 hp (29 bhp / 22 kW) to 200 hp (197 bhp / 147 kW) produced by the plug-and-play module. Much more important is the increase in peak torque from standard 400 to 450 Nm (295 to 332 lb-ft). It gives the vehicle even more pulling power, regardless of whether the vehicle is in hybrid or conventional operating mode, and results in better fuel economy and reduced CO2 emissions.

The two wheel hub motors turn the four-door car into the even more fuel efficient and ecofriendly BRABUS HYBRID. The various operating modes can be preselected from the cockpit.

During all-electric operation the car is powered by an 18.6-kWh lithium-ion battery pack housed in a custom-made well in the underbody. It gives the BRABUS HYBRID in all-electric Eco mode a maximum operating range of 120 kilometers (75 miles) without any CO2 emissions. Even in Sport mode the car has an all-electric range of 80 kilometers (50 miles), which easily meets the requirements of the majority of motorists who on average drive less than 60 kilometers (37 miles) a day.

During all-electric operation the batteries are charged by energy recuperation. While coasting or braking the system reaches a maximum recuperation power of 140 kW. For charging at home with ecofriendly eco electricity the use of the car charger from German energy provider RWE is recommended. It can recharge the battery pack with a current of 380 volts and a charging capacity of 50 kW in 30 minutes. On the road the batteries can be recharged with the on-board charger on any standard 220 V AC outlet or on a 380 V three-phase power supply.

In hybrid mode, the 200 hp (197 bhp) / 147 kW of the diesel engine and the maximum 160 kW of the electric drive in Sport mode work together in highly efficient fashion. Acceleration time for 0 – 100 km/h (62 mph) improves from standard 8.7 to 7.4 seconds.

Despite of the added weight of 255 kilograms (562 lbs.) compared to a stock E 220 CDI, the BRABUS HYBRID also shines in the area of pulling power thanks to its supplemental electric drive: the intermediate sprint from 60 to 120 km/h (37 to 74 mph) now only takes 5.6 seconds.

At the same time the combination with the electric motors eases the load on the combustion engine, significantly reducing fuel consumption and CO2 emissions further. Naturally drivers have the option to operate solely in diesel mode. In this case the batteries can also be recharged by the wheel hub motors which also function as alternators.

The work of the BRABUS development team was not limited to the integration of the two electric motors for all-electric or hybrid operation alone.

The higher vehicle weight and the altered weight distribution resulting from the installation of the wheel hub motors and the batteries in the rear necessitated the development of a new suspension. A height-adjustable comfortable sports suspension with variable damper rates was developed in cooperation with technology partner BILSTEIN.

The tires are supplied by technology partners Continental, Pirelli and YOKOHAMA. They are mounted front and back in size 245/35 ZR 19 on BRABUS Monoblock Q alloy wheels with five double spokes.

The brakes are a BRABUS custom development as well. Special brake discs gripped by two calipers per wheel are attached to the rear of the wheel hub motors on the rear axle. All standard driver assist systems such as ABS and Brake Assist are retained.

The BRABUS front fascia, manufactured like all body components in OEM quality from high-grade Pur-R-Rim plastics, is designed to replace the production bumper in its entirety. Its sophisticated shape reduces lift on the front axle and also lends the sedan an even more striking nose. An innovative lighting concept with economical LED daytime running lights furthermore optimizes active safety.

BRABUS front aluminum sport fenders emphasize the sporty appearance of the concept car. BRABUS side skirts give the sedan a longer, sleeker appearance. Integrated LED entrance lights ensure safe entering and exiting of the vehicle in the dark. A blue-backlit BRABUS logo is integrated into each sill and activated together with the entrance lights.

BRABUS aluminum pedals and footrest add sporty highlights to the interior. A newly developed instrument cluster provides information about the state of charge of the battery pack. A control panel in the cockpit gives drivers the option to select all-electric mode, hybrid operation or diesel engine only.

Brabus recently unveiled its version of the Mercedes-Benz E-Class Convertible known as the E V12 Cabriolet – which is now the fastest four-seater convertible out. Inside, out, and under, the E-Class has received admirable attention from Brabus.

How fast does the world’s fastest cabriolet go? Fast enough to get you 0-62 in 3.7 seconds. Brabus modified the biturbo V12 with upgraded exhaust manifolds, turbo size, and water-to-air intercoolers. Displacement has been bored out 6.3-liters. The engine delivers 800-hp at 1,047 lb-ft of torque, and can take the car all the way up to 231-mph.

All that power is housed by a custom ram-air hood crafted of carbon-fiber, as is the rest of body kit. Air outlets get rid of hot air more efficiently, and the front apron keeps the front end down to the pavement, and houses a distinctive set of LEDs. The car was widened overall and gets 10-inch wide wheels wrapped in 295/30 ZR 19 tires to match.

Ten suspension options are available thanks to the specially made suspension. The height on the E-Class can also be adjusted within a 35 millimeter range.

The inside of the Mercedes is covered in red and black leather. New parts include a steering wheel, redesigned dash, and center console.

Custom orders can be picked up starting at $681,200.

Mercedes-Benz has just recently announced that the 2011 E-Class will be receiving new engines, making it the most efficient car in its class.

Dubbed BlueEFFICIENCY, the E350 features a new their new BlueDIRECT direct-injected 3.5L V6, good for 306-hp, up from the old 3.5L V6 by about 14-hp. But the new economy figures boast a combined fuel cycle of around 33.6 mpg.

The new E500 BlueEfficiency also features their BlueDIRECT direct-injected V8. Displacement was reduced to 4.6L versus 5.5L, but combined with the new injection system and a new biturbo system, both output and fuel economy were increased. Power for the new V8 is rated at 408-hp and 442 lb-ft of torque versus the old 5.5’s 388-hp and 390 lb-ft with the combined fuel economy cycles rated at 26.4 mpg versus the old V8’s 21.7 mpg.

Both will still be quipped with Mercedes’ 7G-TRONIC 7-speed autos that comes with a new ECO Shift program, a redesigned torque converter that reduces slip, an improved ratio spread, and an auxiliary oil pump that maintains operating pressure during stops, all of which favors fuel economy over performance. The end results are 0-60 times of 6.3 seconds for the E350 and 5.2 seconds for the E500. Both top ends are electronically limited to 155 mph.

Press Release:

2011 Mercedes-Benz E-Class: new engines and optimised powertrain – Executive saloon with economy consumption

Stuttgart – More than ever before, new petrol engines and an optimised powertrain make the 2011 Mercedes-Benz E-Class the standard for efficiency in its segment. With a combined fuel consumption of only 6.8-7.0 litres and 8.9 litres * of premium petrol per 100 kilometres, the E 350 BlueEFFICIENCY and E 500 BlueEFFICIENCY excel as the most economical models in their respective performance classes. Following the introduction of the new BlueDIRECT V6 and V8 models, all petrol and diesel engines in the E-Class now feature direct injection. The reduction in fuel consumption by up to 20 percent is also due to the standard ECO start/stop function and the improved 7G-TRONIC PLUS automatic transmission, which is now also available for the four-cylinder variants**.

“E” for “Efficiency”: this is the well-proven success formula with which the E-Class is again raising the bar, and showing how the intelligent interaction between technical innovations throughout the powertrain can reduce fuel consumption even further. For example, in the E 350 BlueEFFICIENCY a combination of third-generation BlueDIRECT injection, the new 7G-TRONIC PLUS automatic transmission and the standard ECO start/stop function has led to a decrease in consumption by 20 percent compared to the preceding model, although peak output has increased by 10 kW/14 hp to 225 kW (306 hp). This high-tech V6 petrol engine is happy with 6.8-7.0 litres of premium petrol per 100 kilometres in the NEDC (New European Driving Cycle), which corresponds to CO2 emissions of 159-164 g/km. The new E 350 BlueEFFICIENCY sprints from 0 to 100 km/h in 6.3 seconds. Top speed is 250 km/h (electronically limited).

A comparable leap in efficiency is achieved by the new E 500 BlueEFFICIENCY. Despite a significantly smaller displacement (4633 cc, previously 5461 cc), the biturbo eight-cylinder with BlueDIRECT technology has gained in both output (300 kW/408 hp, previously 285 kW/388 hp) and torque (600 Nm, previously 530 Nm). At the same time its fuel consumption has fallen by around 17 percent from 10.8 to 8.9 l/100 kilometres * (NEDC combined). This too is the top figure in this perfor mance class – and is accompanied by superior performance: the new E 500 BlueEFFICIENCY sprints from 0 to 100 km/h in only 5.2 seconds. Top speed is 250 km/h (electronically limited).

Lower fuel consumption: ECO start/stop function and 7G-TRONIC PLUS

This leap in efficiency for the BlueDIRECT engines is assisted by the standard ECO start/stop function, which is now included ex factory in the four-cylinder petrol and diesel models as well. Thanks to direct-start technology, the Mercedes-Benz system for petrol engines operates both immediately and quietly.

The automatic transmission exclusively available for the E-Class in future is 7G-TRONIC PLUS **. This comprehensively improved 7-speed automatic transmission is standard equipment in the E 250 BlueEFFICIENC Y, E 350 BlueEFFICIENCY and E 500 BlueEFFICIENCY. The features of this latest evolutionary stage include a new torque converter with reduced slip, an ECO shift programme with an improved ratio spread and an auxiliary oil pump to maintain the operating pressure during automatic stops. Low-friction components and low-viscosity fluid help to reduce the operating pressure.

Major leap in efficiency: the four-cylinder diesel engines in the E-Class

Particularly in the four-cylinder variants of the E-Class, the ECO start/stop function and 7G-TRONIC PLUS make for a considerable increase in efficiency. The engine specialists have also optimised the oil pressure control and belt drive, and equipped the turbocharger with a self-regulating compressor.

Result: In the E 220 CDI BlueEFFICIENCY (125 kW/170 hp) and E 250 CDI BlueEFFICIENCY (150 kW/204 hp) the NEDC consumption CO2 emissions in combination with the 6-speed manual transmission are now only 5.0-5.3 l/100 km and 130-139 g/km. In the automatic version they have fallen by 16 percent to 4.9-5.3 l/100km and 129-138 g CO2/km*. This makes the E 250 CDI BlueEFFICIENCY the most efficient diesel model in its performance category in the luxury class. Both the 6-speed manual and 7G-TRONIC variants of the 100 kW (136 hp) E 200 CDI BlueEFFICIENCY entry-level diesel now have a combined NEDC fuel consumption of only 5.1-5.4 litres per 100 kilometres (134-141 g CO2/km).

Petrol engines at their finest: E 200 BlueEFFICIENCY and E 250 BlueEFFICIENCY

Updating the powertrain has also led to more fuel efficiency in the four-cylinder petrol engines. The 135 kW (184 hp) E 200 BlueEFFICIENCY with 7G-TRONIC PLUS now has an NEDC consumption of only 6.5-6.9 litres of premium petrol per 100 kilometres (152-160 g CO2/km). The figures with the manual 6-speed transmission are 7.1-7.4 l/100 km (169-176 g CO2/km).

Exclusively equipped with the 7G-TRONIC PLUS transmission, the E 250 BlueEFFICIENCY (150 kW/204 hp) has a 13 percent lower NEDC fuel consumption than before at 6.6-7.0 l/100 km. CO2 emissions have fallen to 154-162 g/km. This means that the E 250 BlueEFFICIENCY is likewise at the top of its class with respect to efficiency.

Luxury class with bivalent natural gas drive: E 200 NGT BlueEFFICIENCY

The E 200 NGT BlueEFFICIENCY with bivalent natural gas drive rounds off the comprehensive update to the engine range for the Mercedes-Benz E-Class. The 120 kW (163 hp) four-cylinder in the Saloon can be operated on both premium petrol and natural gas. In addition to the petrol tank, three natural gas tanks are safely accommodated in the only bivalent natural gas model in the luxury class – one behind the rear seat backrest and two under the boot floor.

They have a combined capacity of 121.5 litres of natural gas, corresponding to 19.5 kilograms. In natural gas operation, the combined NEDC consumption of the E 200 NGT BlueEFFICIENCY has fallen by 0.6 kilograms to 5.5 kilograms per 100 kilometres. This corresponds to CO2 emissions of 149 grams per kilometre. In petrol mode the combined consumption has been reduced to 8.1 l/100 km.

If you take a close look at sales figures, Lexus is slowly losing its luxury crown. Mercedes-Benz outsold Lexus in the United States last month, making it the third straight month that the Japanese brand has failed to top its competitors after winning the annual luxury race for 11 straight years.

Mercedes-Benz U.S. sales were boosted by the 2011 E-Class and C-Class sedans. Sales were up 9.4 percent to 21,484 units when compared to the same month in 2010.

Lexus sales were up 2.3 percent to 20,682, while BMW reported a 12 percent gain to 20,295.

With January, February and March sales combined Mercedes seems to be the leader for 2011 so far by 729 sales over BMW and 5,990 over Lexus. Mercedes in the first quarter sold 53,346 vehicles. BMW sold 52,617 and Lexus 47,356 – putting Lexus in at No. 3.

In these days, nothing seems to be built like they used to be. The simple answer is that it’s all about the money. In desperate bids to increase profits and expand into markets to raise volume, much has been sacrificed in the realm of build quality, reliability and handling performance.

This should not be news to anyone as we’ve been forced to adapt to the slow degradation that has been affecting nearly every manufacturer. Some have recognized their faults and are putting solid efforts in to redeeming themselves. Some have completely gone the opposite way. And of course, there are the reasons why cars have become less involving and cheaper than they used to be. But to keep this short and sweet, Consumer Reports just issued a little assessment.

CR found that in models such as the Honda Odyssey, Mercedes-Benz E350, and Toyota Sienna had slightly deviated from the standards that their predecessors have set. Others include the current BMW X5, Toyota 4Runner and the Volkswagen Jetta, all of which have fallen short of their expectations.

Just to give you an idea, Consumer Reports devised a little chart. Check it out after the jump.

A man by the name of Herbert Kohler, head of Daimler’s E-Drive and Future Mobility unit, said that the company is moving as fast as it can on hybrid technologies. The company is expected to offer hybrid versions of the Mercedes-Benz C-Class, E-Class and plug-in hybrid S-Class in the United States and Europe within three years to meet global fuel-economy standards.

“We have a leading position in the premium segment concerning alternative propulsion systems, and we will defend it,” Kohler said.

Sources say that the C-Class and E-Class full hybrids will be launched in Europe before 2013. The S-Class plug-in hybrid will be launched in 2014. U.S. versions of the vehicles will follow six months later.

Mercedes-Benz currently offers the S400 as a mild hybrid and the M-Class as a full hybrid in the United States.

Mercedes-Benz announced that it is recalling 2,297 2011 diesel models in the United States due to concerns that fuel could leak because of a faulty engine filter. The recall consists of diesel models including the M-Class GL-Class, E-Class and R-Class.

Mercedes-Benz told the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration that the O-ring on the engine fuel filter may not have been properly lubricated and that the diesel fuel may be deposited on the highway and create the risk of a potential crash.

Complaints of the issue started back in July and Mercedes-Benz has already modified the part and lubrication process. The Daimler AG owned brand will start notifying owners later this month and will replace all fuel filters on recalled models.

A new Mercedes-Benz commercial for the 2010 E-Class sedan pokes some fun at Volkswagen AG and its Chairman of the Supervisory Board, Ferdinand Piech.

The commercial shows a look-a-like of Piech playing the role of grim reaper saying “Sorry” to the driver as he puts him in harm’s way. The driver then stops the car showing off the E-Class’s feature where the car increases braking power when it senses an accident, disappointing Piech’s look-a-like.

Of course it’s all fun and games with advertisers taking a shot at each other in Stuttgart.

Mercedes-Benz E-class vehicles have garnered the attention of the NHTSA because of concerns of improper deployment of airbags. The agency said today in an internet posting that approximately 100,000 vehicles from model years 2005-2006 may be affected.

NHTSA officials have said they have received four complaints about failures in the module-wiring harness of the steering column, which can potentially result in air bags failing to inflate in the event of a frontal crash. No injuries have been reported to date.

Robert Moran, a company spokesperson based out of Montvale, N.J. had no immediate comment. The U.S. Congress has focused more attention on this issue in the wake of the recent troubles concerning Toyota and its recalls.

The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety announced today that the 2010 Hyundai Genesis and the 2010 Mercedes-Benz E-Class luxury sedans both received the 2010 Top Safety Pick awards.

“The award recognizes the vehicles that earn the top rating of good for front, side, rollover, and rear crash protection, and that have electronic stability control, which is standard on both of these cars,” IIHS said in a statement.

The 2010 Top Safety Pick for the Hyundai Genesis applies for models built after January 2010. The Genesis, which was introduced as a 2009 model year vehicle, received some changes to the roof structure to improve protection in rollover crashes.

The Mercedes-Benz E-Class received the IIHS’s top safety designation for the first time. Earlier this year design changes were made to the padding in the front and rear doors to improve protection in side impact crashes. The award applies to E-Class models built after March 2010.
