Lincoln’s idea of a glorified-Fusion replacement aka the MKZ was unveiled this morning at the 2012 North American International Auto Show.

Right off the bat, you can tell that the MKZ is a huge departure from the previous model, offering a completely new design that appears to be much bigger in size when compared to the previous MKZ.

Check out our original post on the Lincoln MKZ Concept.

Details in terms of power and drivetrains have yet to be released, but so far, Lincoln said that the new MKZ will feature their Lincoln Drive Control and Continuously Controlled Damping adaptive suspension, both of which debuted on the most recent MKS and MKT vehicles equipped with Ford’s EcoBoost V6.

Right before we kick off the second press day of the 2012 Detroit Auto Show, Lincoln has released details and images of the new MKZ, which will be revealed to the public tomorrow in concept form. Lincoln says that the new MKZ Concept signals a significant step in the brand’s reinvention, providing a clear vision of its next-generation models.

“With the Lincoln MKZ Concept, we are not introducing a new car. We are essentially introducing a new brand,” said Derrick Kuzak, Ford Motor Company group vice president for Global Product Development. “The MKZ Concept is the next step in the reinvention of Lincoln, something we’ve been quietly but aggressively pursuing.”

Lincoln says that the MKZ Concept provides a strong hint at the production model that will hit dealerships later this year.

“The MKZ Concept’s shape is a vision of simplicity completed with just a few strokes,” said Max Wolff, Lincoln design director. “Our movement as a brand is toward something we call elegant simplicity. It’s something warmer and more restrained, which is moving away from complex designs and traditional luxury.”

Leaving behind its sharing days with the Ford Fusion, the new MKZ transforms into a four-door-coupe that will compete with the likes of the Porsche Panamera, Mercedes-Benz CLS and Audi A7 – at least in terms of design. On the inside, the MKZ Concept seats four, with a bunch of new technology including a 10.1 inch Thin Film Transistor LCD and MyLincoln Touch.

The production model of the Lincoln MKZ will be available in front-wheel and all-wheel-drive with a range of EcoBoost engines and a new Lincoln Drive Control.

At next week’s 2012 North American International Auto Show Lincoln will be featuring a concept for its new MKZ sedan model.

The model is to help the brand compete against luxury brands that have been growing while Lincoln was undergoing some major changes. “This is the biggest statement Lincoln has ever made at an auto show,” said Max Wolff, Lincoln’s director of design. “Our NAIAS display represents more than a vehicle debut. It represents the reinvention of Lincoln.”

Lincoln’s current midsizer, the MKZ, has been with us since about 2005 and has seen some decent success. So it’s no wonder that Lincoln has confirmed that they’ll be unveiling a new MKZ Concept at next year’s 2012 Detroit Motor Show.

The new MKZ was one of the first cars designed by Lincoln’s new design director Max Wolff, formerly of Cadillac. The 2013 MKZ will be given a new platform, which will also act as the backbone for the next Ford Fusion and their European counterparts like the Mondeo—most likely part of Ford’s latest efforts to globalize their cars.

The new platform will have the MKZ deliver its power through the front wheels like the current version and all-wheel drive is presumed to come back as an option. We can also safely say that a hybrid version will also make a return while the standard MKZ will be offered with both a range of V6s and turbocharged four-bangers.

Additionally, because parent company FoMoCo axed Mercury last year, this leaves a lot more funding for the Lincoln brand to step up their game. Along with this bit of news, a rumor came along with it that Lincoln may also import Australia Ford’s hot rear-wheel drive Falcon sedan and make that into a tire-scorching bad-ass Lincoln that will probably compete against the likes of the Cadillac CTS-V. However, the rumor also said this is not out of the question, but it’s an idea for the very long term and is very dependent on the success of Lincoln in the coming years.

Earlier today, we reported that Ford has asked its Lincoln dealers to spend at least $1 million to renovate showrooms within the next two years.

For those dealers that do not invest in renovations, Ford will take back their franchises in exchange for compensations.

Those who choose to continue selling Lincolns must start remodeling by the end of this year and must be finished by the end of 2013, Ford told dealers. That’s when Ford plans on launched the redesigned Lincoln MKZ along with a new small crossover based on the Ford Focus platform, a dealer who attended a recent meeting said.

We’re guess that the Ford Focus based crossover will give Lincoln a BMW X3 or Audi Q5 competitor.

All-wheel-drive vehicles are becoming more and more popular – so much so that Ford and General Motors have turned to all-wheel-drive models to boost the appeal of their Lincoln and Cadillac brands respectively.

GM says that about 50% of the CTS models Cadillac sells have AWD. Lincoln offers all-wheel-drive on every model it sells – about a quarter of all MKZ sedans drive off the dealer lots with AWD.

“All-wheel drive will take on an even bigger role as we introduce new models,” said Jim Vurpillat, Cadillac global marketing director. “It will probably exceed 50% of our total model line.”

“AWD is a core part of what we offer,” said Lincoln director of product development Scott Tobin. “People see value in the option, both for its benefits in adverse weather and because it provides better performance and handling in normal conditions.”

According to Paul Lacy, a consultant at IHS Automotive, about 30 percent of all vehicles sold in the United States by 2015 will be all-wheel-drive. “The trend is driven by the growth in all-wheel drive cars and crossovers,” Lacy said.

Lincoln said today that a significant amount of its customers are increasingly purchasing the brand’s vehicles with all-wheel-drive. Lincoln, which offers all-wheel-drive on all of its models, said that customers of Lincoln’s crossover and SUV models are more likely to choose this technology.

“One of the greatest benefits of luxury is choice,” said C.J. O’Donnell, Group Marketing Manager for Lincoln. “That is why Lincoln customers are able to equip any of our cars and crossovers with an advanced all-wheel drive system.”

Lincoln said that 72 percent of Lincoln MKT customers and 62 percent of MKX buyers have opted for all-wheel drive so far in 2011. This compares to 46 percent of MKS and 25 percent of MKZ sedan customers. The Ford-owned brand said that the Lincoln Navigator is built with all-wheel drive no less than 62 percent of the time.

“We’re seeing the number of customers choosing all-wheel drive increasing steadily as drivers appreciate the benefits,” says O’Donnell. “More than half of our crossover customers are enjoying the reassurance that all-wheel drive delivers, such that once they have experienced it, they don’t want to give it up. ”We see all-wheel drive as a core technology option for the entire Lincoln line-up, both today and for the future.”

Press Release:

Consumer Demand for the Lincoln MKZ Hybrid Continues to Outstrip Expectations; MKZ range excels for choice and dependability

Percentage of hybrid models sold within the MKZ range is higher than expected

Lincoln MKZ Hybrid is the most fuel-efficient luxury sedan in America and is the first model to offer a no-charge hybrid powertrain option

Lincoln received highest score for durability in the latest J.D. Power and Associates Vehicle Dependability Study of three-year-old vehicles

DEARBORN, Mich., March 28, 2011 – Sales of the Lincoln MKZ Hybrid luxury sedan continue to exceed expectations. Having launched with a sales mix of approximately 15 percent within the MKZ model range, sales have continued to track at more than 20 percent since January 2011.

In addition to sales momentum, the MKZ Hybrid is proving popular for its other strengths, including fuel economy and top-rated dependability. No other four-door luxury sedan – gasoline, diesel or hybrid powertrain – can top the MKZ’s certified 41 mpg city and 36 mpg highway EPA rating.

Lincoln Dependability
Recently, Lincoln received the highest score for long-term durability among all vehicle brands in the annual J.D. Power and Associates 2011 Vehicle Dependability Study, the second-highest performing model for long-term durability in the entire study.

The study asked owners about their experience in the past 12 months with their three-year-old vehicles (for the 2011 study, 2008 model-year cars and trucks were surveyed). Survey respondents were asked to indicate any problems they experienced with their vehicle in the previous 12 months, choosing from a list of more than 200 issues in eight diverse categories.

The study also shows a strong link between reliability and purchase. Nearly two-thirds (63 percent) of new-vehicle buyers say reliability/durability is one of the most important factors in choosing a new vehicle. Additionally, the study found that fuel economy is among the top 10 purchase considerations.

Lincoln MKZ Choice
Lincoln was the first luxury automaker to offer a hybrid vehicle with the same base price as its gasoline counterpart. Both gasoline and hybrid versions of the MKZ have the same suggested retail price of $34,605.

That’s a value equation for the consumer that San Diego Lincoln dealer Ed Witt calls “huge.” He has delivered Lincoln MKZ Hybrids to customers who traded in other luxury brand vehicles as well as other hybrids. Witt’s store has delivered MKZ Hybrids to drivers of Toyota’s Prius and Lexus luxury vehicles, and has even taken BMWs in on trade for the car. One family, he said, traded in three cars and bought two Lincoln MKZ Hybrids.

To date, Witt has sold the most MKZ Hybrids out of any other Lincoln dealer in the United States since the vehicle’s launch in October. “Potential customers are surprised by the Lincoln MKZ Hybrid’s quietness, comfort and power. They just love the performance,” says Witt.

Outfitted with Ford’s award-winning 2.5-liter Atkinson-cycle four-cylinder engine, permanent magnet electric motor and eCVT transmission, Lincoln MKZ Hybrid delivers seamless performance. The gas-electric powertrain is rated at 191 horsepower.

MKZ’s interior has been laid out with an array of standard features, including real wood trim taken from sustainable forests, supple leather upholstery, heated and cooled front seats, and the award-winning SYNC voice-activated in-vehicle communications and entertainment system.

Lincoln is also the only luxury car brand to offer a THX® II Certified Audio System, bringing home theater sound quality to the MKX through 14 speakers strategically spread around the acoustically engineered cabin.

The 2012 Ford Focus, which hits dealerships early next year, is projected to get an estimated 40 mpg on the highway. If that holds to be true, Ford will have four vehicles in its lineup that produce 40 mpg or more in 2011.

Besides the 2012 Focus, three 2011 vehicles – including the Fiesta, Fusion Hybrid and Lincoln MKZ Hybrid – have certified 2011 EPA ratings of 40 mpg highway and 41 mpg city.

“A few years ago, Ford committed to making fuel economy a top priority companywide,” Barb Samardzich, Ford’s vice president of powertrain engineering, said in a statement. “Our hybrid vehicles led the way, and this new wave of powerful, refined gasoline engines is reasserting the company’s leadership position.”

According to the 2011 EPA Fuel-Economy Guide, no other full-line automaker offers four models with ratings of 40 mpg or more.

Refresher: The 2012 Ford Focus is powered by 2.0L DOHC inline 4-clyinder unit with twin independent variable camshaft timing (Ti-VCT), direct gasoline injection and E85 flex fuel capability. The engine produces 160-hp and 146 lb-ft of torque. The 2012 Focus is offered in S, SE, SEL and Titanium trim-levels with prices starting at $16,270.

Green Car Journal has announced the five finalists for the 2011 Green Car of the Year, the winner of which will be announced at the 2010 LA Auto Show on Nov. 18. The five finalists include the 2011 Chevrolet Volt, 2011 Ford Fiesta, 2011 Hyundai Sonata Hybrid, 2011 Lincoln MKZ Hybrid and the 2011 Nissan LEAF.

“These five 2011 Green Car of the Year® finalists reflect an auto industry in transition,” said Ron Cogan, editor and publisher of Green Car Journal and editor of GreenCar.com. “It wasn’t long ago when electric drive was a novelty. Now, it’s expected that auto manufacturers will include electric drive in some form among their model offerings.”

2011 Green Car of the Year Finalists Revealed

Winner to be Announced at the LA Auto Show Nov. 18

LOS ANGELES, October 21, 2010 /PRNewswire/ – Green Car Journal announced today its five finalists for the 2011 Green Car of the Year®, including the 2011 Chevrolet Volt, 2011 Ford Fiesta, 2011 Hyundai Sonata Hybrid, 2011 Lincoln MKZ Hybrid and the 2011 Nissan LEAF. For the sixth consecutive year, this increasingly important award will be announced during a press conference at the LA Auto Show Press Days on Nov. 18.

The Green Car of the Year® award is a program that honors environmental leadership in the automobile field and recognizes vehicles that become available to consumers during the award year. For the first time, the Green Car of the Year® finalists include two primarily electric-drive vehicles in addition to two hybrids and a high mile-per-gallon, gasoline internal combustion engine.

While four of the five Green Car of the Year® nominees do incorporate electric drive, the Ford Fiesta nominee underscores that internal combustion continues to evolve in important ways. This hatchback achieves up to 40 EPA estimated highway fuel economy, running on conventional gasoline. Along with vehicles incorporating electric drive, a new generation of internal combustion gasoline and clean diesel models are expected to push efficiencies ever higher in the coming years.

Dozens of potential nominees weighed in during the selection process. Green Car Journal editors considered vehicles employing all fuels and technologies in the effort to raise the bar in environmental performance, including high efficiency gasoline internal combustion, advanced diesel, hybrids, electrics and vehicles capable of running on alternative fuels. In the Green Car of the Year® program, nominees must stand out as exemplary models that forward environmental performance in meaningful and quantifiable ways. Market significance and “newness” are also factors. All nominees must be on sale by January 1 of the award year.

Jurors include leaders of the nation’s top environmental organizations, including Carl Pope, chairman of the Sierra Club; Frances Beinecke, president of the Natural Resources Defense Council; Jean-Michel Cousteau, president of Ocean Futures Society and Matt Petersen, president of Global Green USA. Also, Jay Leno, noted auto enthusiast and host of the “Tonight Show,” as well as automotive icon Carroll Shelby join Green Car Journal editors in rounding out the 2011 jury.

Now that Mercury is gone, FoMoCo plans on allocating more of its resources to expanding the luxury Lincoln brand. Product planners are looking to add a compact, front-wheel-drive sedan or crossover and are also thinking of a vehicle based on the next-generation Ford Mondeo.

Here is a little something you can expect from Lincoln between 2011 and 2013:

First up, the brand is looking at a compact front-wheel-drive vehicle that could either be a sedan or a crossover. Currently, insiders say there are two possibilities – the first would be a compact crossover based on the next-generation Ford Kuga from Europe, while the second could be a compact car or crossover based on the 2012 Ford Focus. Look out for one or both sometime in 2013.

Next up will be Lincoln MKZ, which will be redesigned for the 2013 model year when FoMoCo moves it to a global mid-sized platform. FoMoCo is also said to be considering a mid-sized sedan for Lincoln based on the next-generation Mondeo. If the Mondeo based model is approved, the low-volume mid-sized car would likely fit under the MKS in Lincoln’s lineup. The Lincoln MKS sedan will be facelifted in 2012 followed by a complete redesign in 2016.

Now here’s where things get a little tricky. According to sources that spoke with Automotive News, the MKT crossover and the Ford Flex are rumored to be phased out after the 2014 model year. Insiders said that the models will be replaced by a vehicle based on the new Ford Explorer. The folks at Motor Trend decided to contact Said Deep, Ford Product Spokesman, to see of this is true. Deep said: “The speculative reports about the Flex and MKT are incorrect. These fullsize crossovers are vital to each brand.”

As for the Lincoln Navigator, the model is expected to get an EcoBoost engine and the 5.0L V8 within the next few years. A redesign is also in the works for the 2012 model year.

FoMoCo is making history again, well at least its Lincoln brand is. The automaker announced today that the new 2011 Lincoln MKZ Hybrid will be priced the same as its conventional gas sibling.

“Customers are very enthusiastic about the MKZ Hybrid and we think they will be even more excited to learn they sacrifice nothing to be able to go green in style,” said John Felice, general manager, Ford and Lincoln Marketing. “We”re launching a world-class hybrid that beats all competitors, and at an introductory price that is sure to draw the interest of new customers to Lincoln.”

Prices for the 2011 Lincoln Hybrid start at $35,180, including destination and delivery. That prices is similar to its 2011 Lincoln MKZ V6 gas model and below the 2010 Lexus HS 250h, the MKZ Hybrid”s nearest competitor.

Press release and high-res gallery posted after the jump.

Refresher: Power for the 2011 Lincoln MKZ Hybrid comes from the same 2.5L Atkinson-cycle I-4 hybrid engine found in the Ford Fusion Hybrid. Working together, the gasoline engine and the electric-motor both put out a net 191-hp. The Lincoln MKZ Hybrid is also capable of cruising in pure electric mode at speeds of up to 47 mph and averages an EPA-rated fuel-economy of 41/36 mpg (city/highway).

The following features come standard on the 2011 Lincoln MKZ Hybrid. They are either not offered at all on the Lexus HS 250h, or are available at an extra cost:

SmartGauge™ with EcoGuide ““ Ford”s highly successful interactive technology provides real-time information to help drivers maximize fuel efficiency, and coaches drivers on how to optimize hybrid performance. Lincoln takes SmartGauge to the next level of engagement by giving drivers enhanced positive feedback on long-term fuel efficiency and driving performance through the “growth” of virtual small flowers on the system”s right-most screen. Lincoln”s white flowers, inspired by apple blossoms, remain permanently unless long-term fuel economy is reset.

Genuine wood trim ““ In addition to their exquisite appearance, the Swirl Walnut and Olive Ash wood trims offered in the Lincoln MKZ Hybrid are eco-friendly as well. The veneers come from well-managed forests, as defined by strict environmental, social and economic standards, and from other rigorously controlled sources.

Bridge of Weir leather-trimmed seats ““ The world-renowned luxury leather from Scotland is unembossed, allowing the natural beauty and character of the grain to shine through. The leather is milled for up to 12 hours to ensure a buttery, soft hand, and Bridge of Weir uses a chromium-free tanning process, which makes it easier to recycle.

Lincoln SYNC® ““ The Lincoln-exclusive voice-activated communications and entertainment system provides an omnipresent link to contacts and information. In addition to Bluetooth® phone, audible text and MP3 player capabilities, Lincoln customers also can access Vehicle Health Report and 911 Assist™.

10-way power passenger seat ““ The seat is designed to accommodate a diverse group of passengers. Memory functions enable passengers to fine-tune and recall positions.

Power driver memory seat settings ““ The driver seat memory feature helps ensure personal seating preferences anytime, with the touch of a button.

Heated and cooled front seats ““ This uniquely engineered system delivers exceptional heating and cooling comfort.

Reverse sensing system ““ This system senses what drivers might not see behind them and relays an audible alert if objects are near, which increases in frequency the closer a driver gets.

Keyless entry keypad ““ This Lincoln-exclusive feature provides secure entry at a driver”s fingertips. A personal combination holds a memory for driver preferences. So if an owner is out for a run and doesn”t want to take the keys along, the vehicle can be opened with the touch of a few buttons.

Easy Fuel® (capless fuel filler) ““ This Lincoln-exclusive feature uses an integrated spring-loaded flapper door to eliminate the need for a fuel tank screw cap. That means no more fumbling to remove and tighten the cap and less fuel odor on a driver”s hands.

Personal Safety System™ ““ This Lincoln-exclusive suite of seven protection technologies work together as a system to help protect vehicle occupants. The system includes dual-stage front airbags and an occupant classification system to sense whether the passenger seat is occupied. It tailors ““ or suppresses ““ airbag deployment to help provide an appropriate level of protection. It also features the Ford Belt-Minder® system to remind front seat occupants to buckle up.

MyKey™ ““ This Lincoln-exclusive feature allows parents to program a key to limit speed and audio volume to encourage teens to drive safer and improve fuel efficiency. It also encourages seat belt use, provides earlier low-fuel warnings, and can be programmed to sound chimes at 45, 55 and 65 mph.

Integrated spotter mirrors ““ The traditional sideview mirrors are designed with a secondary convex spotter mirror in the top outer corner, which provides a view of the driver”s blind spot. When traffic enters the driver”s blind spot on either side of the vehicle, it is visible in the secondary convex mirror, alerting the driver of obstacles.

Acoustic laminated windshield ““ This windshield features a layer of sound-absorbent vinyl sandwiched between two sheets of glass, which enhances interior quietness.

The 2011 Lincoln MKZ Hybrid is now officially the most fuel-efficient luxury sedan in the United States with an EPA-rated fuel-economy of 41/36 mpg (city/highway).

“The Lincoln MKZ Hybrid offers everything our customers look for in a midsize luxury sedan, plus unsurpassed fuel economy,” said Derrick Kuzak, Ford”s group vice president, Global Product Development. “Our engineers worked to ensure the hybrid electric motor and engine complement each other in a fashion that reflects the truly refined driving experience that is synonymous with the Lincoln name.”

Power comes from the same 2.5L Atkinson-cycle I-4 hybrid engine found in the Ford Fusion Hybrid . Working together, the gasoline engine and the electric-motor both put out a net 191-hp. The Lincoln MKZ Hybrid is also capable of cruising in pure electric mode at speeds of up to 47 mph, compared with its “closest competitor”, the Lexus HS 250h, which can hit just 25 mph on pure battery power.

The International Institute for Highway Safety announced that it has awarded Audi, Ford, Hyundai and Volkswagen models the 2010 Top Safety Pick award.

“Based on new rollover test results the 2010 Audi A4 and Q5, Ford Flex and Fusion (twins Mercury Milan and Lincoln MKZ), Hyundai Tucson, Lincoln MKT, and Volkswagen Jetta SportWagen earn the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety’s TOP SAFETY PICK award,” the IIHS said in a statement.

Each of the model mention above achieved the highest rating of good for roof strength in rollover crashes. To measure for roof strength, the IIHS pushes a metal plate against one corner of a vehicle’s roof at a constant speed. The maximum force sustained by the roof before 5 inches of crush is compared to the vehicle’s weight to find the strength-to-weight ratio.

The Top Safety Pick award is given to the vehicles that earn the highest rating of good for front, side, rollover, and rear crash protection, and that have electronic stability control, which is standard on all of these models.
