Earlier today, Lincoln fully revealed the new and improved Lincoln MKT luxury crossover at the 2011 Los Angeles Auto Show.

Updated with a facelift and some revised equipment, Lincoln hopes the improvements will help the MKT’s sales as it’s been a bit of a slow seller ever since it was introduced just last year. And that could be due to its awkward looks. However, I did spend some time playing around with the new MyFord / MyLincoln Touch system and I’m glad to say – it’s definitely a big improvement over the old system.

Some of the changes involve the inclusion of Lincoln’s adaptive suspension when opted with the top-of-the-line 3.5L EcoBoost V6. Additionally, much like the MKS flagship sedan, the base naturally-aspirated V6 engine gets some minor tweaks, which means a bump in power and an estimated slight boost in fuel economy.

Even though the Lincoln MKT was introduced just last year, the full-size crossover was given a minor update for the 2013 model year.

Making its debut at the 2011 Los Angeles Motor Show, the 2013 Lincoln MKT gets a minor aesthetic facelift. It also comes standard with the same “Continuously Controlled Damping” adaptive suspension setup that also debuted in the 2013 Lincoln MKS when opted with the 3.5L EcoBoost V6.

Additionally, the base V6 for the MKT, much like the MKS, gets a minor update to the 3.7 liter V6 that now makes 300-hp and 275 lb-ft of torque and is expected to improve the MKT’s highway fuel economy by one mile per gallon. The Lincoln MKT EcoBoost keeps its 3.5 liter V6 EcoBoost making 355-hp and 350 lb-ft of torque.

Styling wise the MKT gets the new Lincoln grille which will now be a recognizable Lincoln family look going forward.

Click here for more news on the Lincoln MKT.

“The effort behind the new look was to change the proportion of the MKT from the front view. We helped make it feel wider and a bit less tall, less vertical,” said Max Wolff, Lincoln Design director. “The execution of the new MKT’s grille and the grille bars is a lot more refined and elegant. The new front graphic displays a lot of three-dimensionality, but it’s accomplished in a calmer, more restrained way.”

Lincoln said that the 2013 MKT will hit showrooms around the same time as the new MKS, which should be in the spring of 2012.

Besides adding minor exterior and interior upgrades to the Lincoln MKTS and MKS, the Ford-owned luxury brand will strongly focus on improving ride and handling to differentiate Lincoln from Ford. The next-generation of the MKS and MKT will get new steering, braking and suspension systems, sources say.

Ford is also considering introducing Lincoln to the Chinese market, says FoMoCo CEO Alan Mulally.

“We have a great luxury brand in Lincoln, which we have recommitted ourselves to,” Mulally said. “There’s going to be tremendous pull from China to have access to these great vehicles.”

Ford is investing $1.6 billion to build four new plants in China, where it will triple its lineup by offering 15 models by 2015.

China’s demand for luxury cars is expected to grow 35 percent, analysts at J.D. Power forecast.

Whether or not you love it or hate it, Lincoln’s waterfall grille is on its way out. Sources familiar with the plans for the updated MKS sedan and MKT crossover due next spring, said that the models will no longer feature the waterfall grille.

One source said that both models will get a ‘completely different’ grille from the current grille, which has been quite controversial. The source said that the new grill is ‘more elegant’ and ‘not as pronounced’ as the waterfall grille.

When will we see this new grille on the MKS and MKT? Most likely at the 2011 LA Auto Show in November.

Do you agree with Lincoln’s decision to drop the waterfall grille? Let us know by casting your vote in the poll below.

Lincoln is trying to shake their current reputation, in attempts to rid themselves of any ‘glorified Ford’ stigmas. Their approach will be to make completely new and completely updated versions of their vehicles.

Consumers can eventually expect to see seven different models in the next few years, with the first two, the MKS and MKT being redesigned for introduction at the Los Angeles Auto Show in November.

Ford product chief Derrick Kuzak says about the changes “You think of BMW as engaging to drive; you can think of Lexus as refined. Bring them together and it is a new experience no customer has ever had.” in a Wall Street Journal interview.

Conceptually, Lincoln is looking to keep their redesign understated. I’m hoping for timeless and classic.

Do you really think Lincoln can do it? Cast your vote in the poll below.

Lincoln said today that a significant amount of its customers are increasingly purchasing the brand’s vehicles with all-wheel-drive. Lincoln, which offers all-wheel-drive on all of its models, said that customers of Lincoln’s crossover and SUV models are more likely to choose this technology.

“One of the greatest benefits of luxury is choice,” said C.J. O’Donnell, Group Marketing Manager for Lincoln. “That is why Lincoln customers are able to equip any of our cars and crossovers with an advanced all-wheel drive system.”

Lincoln said that 72 percent of Lincoln MKT customers and 62 percent of MKX buyers have opted for all-wheel drive so far in 2011. This compares to 46 percent of MKS and 25 percent of MKZ sedan customers. The Ford-owned brand said that the Lincoln Navigator is built with all-wheel drive no less than 62 percent of the time.

“We’re seeing the number of customers choosing all-wheel drive increasing steadily as drivers appreciate the benefits,” says O’Donnell. “More than half of our crossover customers are enjoying the reassurance that all-wheel drive delivers, such that once they have experienced it, they don’t want to give it up. ”We see all-wheel drive as a core technology option for the entire Lincoln line-up, both today and for the future.”

Comfortable and productive work environment for driver and passengers enhanced by technologies including SYNC®, hands-free navigation, standard Wi-Fi capability and a rear view camera system.

MKT Town Car available in two body styles – standard livery version with available all-wheel drive, and stretchable heavy-duty limo with standard all-wheel drive.

LAS VEGAS, Feb. 14, 2011 – Working from a proven platform that offers a luxurious interior with modern technologies, Lincoln is today announcing its chauffeur-dedicated MKT Town Car models designed specifically for fleet customers at the 2011 International LCT (Limousine, Charter, and Tour) show.

Two different MKT Town Car body styles, Livery and Limousine, make their debut in nearproduction form, maintaining Lincoln’s position in the livery industry and building on the success of the well-established Lincoln Town Car sedan.

Lincoln’s next generation of livery solutions using the MKT Town Car are modern, distinctive and high-tech, offering everything owners and passengers are looking for in a luxury ride, including up to 35 more horsepower under the hood.

The proportions and higher riding stance of the Lincoln MKT Town Car also offer easier entry and exit for passengers as well as all-wheel drive capability.

The level of craftsmanship built in to the new Lincoln MKT Town Car Livery and Limousine versions is evident with precise panel margins and the high tactile quality of interior surfaces and trim. Quality materials and precision-stitched craftsmanship are evident on every surface, such as the leather-trimmed seating. The vehicle also delivers a luxurious ride quality, consistent with Lincoln’s brand characteristics.

The new Lincoln MKT Town Car Livery version uses a standard MKT chassis and is available in both front-wheel drive and all-wheel drive configurations, with full technical details to be announced later this year. The heavy-duty Limousine chassis will feature standard all-wheel drive for stretched wheelbase limousine conversion of up to an additional 120 inches (10 feet).

In developing the Lincoln MKT Town Car, engineers worked hand in hand with the Limo/Livery
Advisory Board, which provided key input on desired vehicle attributes such as performance,
comfort and functionality. In addition to defining the quality, reliability and durability the industry
demands, the Advisory Board also talked directly to the people who would be using the vehicles
the most – owners, drivers and passengers – to get a better understanding of their wants and
needs.

“Extensive research helped ensure we designed the new Lincoln MKT Town Car to truly deliver on the key needs of operators to improve their business and provide end-users modern transportation capable of full connectivity,” said Gerry Koss, fleet marketing manager. “These
industry stakeholders made it clear that this vehicle was the right direction because of its great
body proportions for overall comfort, including entry and exit. Also, the choice of two or allwheel drive for the Livery model and standard all-wheel drive on the heavy-duty Limousine version was a plus, not to mention Lincoln’s reputation for dependability, especially with specialty vehicles.”

Luxury and Comfort on the go
With its exceptional attention to detail, the MKT Town Car Livery model will put its passengers
quickly at ease, thanks to redesigned rear seating. The seat has been repositioned rearward by
1.5 inches for additional legroom, providing additional comfort and functionality. There is also a
switch on the rear passenger side door that allows a rear seat passenger to control the front
passenger seat ahead, providing even more legroom if necessary. The three-person rear seat
also reclines for an additional level of comfort.

“Riding in the rear of the new Lincoln MKT Town Car will be a very special experience,” said Scott Tobin, director of Lincoln Product Development. “We’ve enhanced the rear passenger space so passengers can be both extremely comfortable and productive at the same time.”

The new MKT Town Car Livery model provides operators with a cargo capacity of 39.6 cubic
feet, more than the outgoing Town Car sedan. With space to stow golf clubs or several pieces
of baggage, the luggage area exceeds that of the outgoing Town Car sedan. A mini spare tire is
also available to help maximize luggage space.

High-tech touches
The new Lincoln MKT Town Car models deliver a wide range of latest technologies aimed at making life easier for the driver and passengers. In-car voice activated navigation and Lincoln
SYNC provide a smart and simple way to connect drivers with in-car technologies and their
digital lives.

“All of these tools will help drivers accomplish just as much in their car as they do now but with
less distraction,” said Tobin. “With the latest Lincoln SYNC system, the driver will never have to
take hands off the steering wheel when putting an address into the navigation system or when
looking at the rear view camera.”

Key features to help passengers stay connected and productive while on the move in the new MKT Town Car include a USB charging port, a 110-volt power socket in the rear seat center
console, and Wi-Fi hotspot capability for mobile tablets, laptops and other devices. The audio
system controls are also fully accessible to rear seat passengers.

Limousine Heavy-Duty Chassis
In addition to the new Livery model, a specially engineered heavy-duty Limousine chassis is also available for the MKT Town Car. The chassis can be stretched by up to 120 inches or 10 additional feet in length, while retaining the standard all-wheel drive capability to ensure a new MKT Town Car Limousine satisfies both operators and customers in all seasons over multiple lengths.

The MKT Town Car Limousine chassis incorporates several heavy-duty components, such as
upgraded suspension, electric power-assisted steering system (EPAS) and transmission. Along
with standard All-Wheel Drive, the MKT Town Car Limousine chassis also offers unique wheels
and tires, unique wheel bearings and an upsized brake system.

The Limousine also has the standard MKT’s third seating row removed, and comes equipped
with a full-size spare tire. Available technology includes a rear view camera and SYNC.

“The MKT Town Car Limousine complements the Livery model giving us a comprehensive offering for every operator and passenger situation,” said Koss. “Both vehicles will deliver the features and content this industry requires, in addition to the quality, reliability and durability they
demand.”

Technology Under the Skin
The new Lincoln MKT Town Car features the same safety technologies available to customers
of the standard Lincoln MKT crossover, including the Trinity Front Crash Body Architecture. The
energy-absorbing body structure is optimized for strength and stiffness and features octagonal
front frame rails, engine/cradle/front subframe and “shotgun” front structural members designed
to absorb and redirect crash forces away from the passenger compartment.

It also includes Side Protection And Cabin Enhancement architecture (SPACE®) to optimize
side-impact occupant protection. The SPACE system integrates a hydroformed high-strength steel tube in the floor that runs the width of the vehicle from B-pillar to B-pillar and reinforcements along the rocker panels to help protect passengers in side-impact incidents.

The Personal Safety System™ combines multiple technologies to tailor the airbag package and seat belt functions to the individual passenger and the accident circumstances. The system can identify variables, such as severity of the crash, weight of the individual passenger and seat belt usage, to adjust airbag deployment force.

Key technologies and features included in the MKT Town Car models include:
• Puddle lamps on the rear doors
• Map and newspaper pockets in the back of the front seats
• Vanity mirrors in the headliner with integrated task light
• Continuous rear floor mat for both footwells
• Improved rear seating design
• Remote start
• Rear view camera
• BLIS (Blind Spot Information System) with cross-traffic alert
• Wi-Fi capability for mobile tablet, laptops and other devices
• Lincoln SYNC
• Voice activated navigation controls
• Second-row 110-volt electric plug and USB mobile phone charger
• Tri Zone EATC with Auxiliary HVAC unit

The new Lincoln MKT Town Car models will be manufactured at Oakville Assembly Complex starting next spring. Current Lincoln Town Car production ends this fall, and dealers are working with their livery owners and operator partners to ensure their fleet planning needs are met between now and early next year.

Lincoln is positioning a special version of its MKT crossover to fill this soon anticipated need. Before widespread acceptance becomes reality in an industry that serves C-level executives on a regular basis, the vehicles must prove themselves to be fit for the call of duty, and that’s what certain companies in New York are finding out about right now.

“We’re evaluating a few of them in our fleet, so far so good,” said Mark Heminway, vice president of Executive Transportation Group, which is based in Brooklyn and specializes in corporate clients. “Long term we still have to find out what will be the price point and the ultimate acceptance by customers. Don’t forget: the Town Car is an icon.”

The Lincoln ‘black car’ has become indicative of belonging to the upper crust of the New York socialite scene, and operators must make sure that whatever replacement vehicle comes along, exudes the same. Despite the fact that some have recently migrated away from the Town Car in favor of more efficient vehicles or the smoother ride to be had in a BMW or Mercedes, Heminway estimates there to be about 8,000 Lincoln Town Cars in service as livery cabs in New York City; a market not to be ignored.

In order to cater more to what livery drivers seek in a vehicle, the standard MKT will be modified, as the livery model MKT will feature Wi-Fi and all-wheel drive, and of course the ability to lengthen the car into a stretch limousine.

Now that Mercury is gone, FoMoCo plans on allocating more of its resources to expanding the luxury Lincoln brand. Product planners are looking to add a compact, front-wheel-drive sedan or crossover and are also thinking of a vehicle based on the next-generation Ford Mondeo.

Here is a little something you can expect from Lincoln between 2011 and 2013:

First up, the brand is looking at a compact front-wheel-drive vehicle that could either be a sedan or a crossover. Currently, insiders say there are two possibilities – the first would be a compact crossover based on the next-generation Ford Kuga from Europe, while the second could be a compact car or crossover based on the 2012 Ford Focus. Look out for one or both sometime in 2013.

Next up will be Lincoln MKZ, which will be redesigned for the 2013 model year when FoMoCo moves it to a global mid-sized platform. FoMoCo is also said to be considering a mid-sized sedan for Lincoln based on the next-generation Mondeo. If the Mondeo based model is approved, the low-volume mid-sized car would likely fit under the MKS in Lincoln’s lineup. The Lincoln MKS sedan will be facelifted in 2012 followed by a complete redesign in 2016.

Now here’s where things get a little tricky. According to sources that spoke with Automotive News, the MKT crossover and the Ford Flex are rumored to be phased out after the 2014 model year. Insiders said that the models will be replaced by a vehicle based on the new Ford Explorer. The folks at Motor Trend decided to contact Said Deep, Ford Product Spokesman, to see of this is true. Deep said: “The speculative reports about the Flex and MKT are incorrect. These fullsize crossovers are vital to each brand.”

As for the Lincoln Navigator, the model is expected to get an EcoBoost engine and the 5.0L V8 within the next few years. A redesign is also in the works for the 2012 model year.

The International Institute for Highway Safety announced that it has awarded Audi, Ford, Hyundai and Volkswagen models the 2010 Top Safety Pick award.

“Based on new rollover test results the 2010 Audi A4 and Q5, Ford Flex and Fusion (twins Mercury Milan and Lincoln MKZ), Hyundai Tucson, Lincoln MKT, and Volkswagen Jetta SportWagen earn the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety’s TOP SAFETY PICK award,” the IIHS said in a statement.

Each of the model mention above achieved the highest rating of good for roof strength in rollover crashes. To measure for roof strength, the IIHS pushes a metal plate against one corner of a vehicle’s roof at a constant speed. The maximum force sustained by the roof before 5 inches of crush is compared to the vehicle’s weight to find the strength-to-weight ratio.

The Top Safety Pick award is given to the vehicles that earn the highest rating of good for front, side, rollover, and rear crash protection, and that have electronic stability control, which is standard on all of these models.

There were quite a few years when Lincoln and the rest of the Ford family lost its appeal to the younger crowd, save for the ever-popular Ford Mustang. Over the last few years however, Ford has expended great effort, with success we might add, in redesigning, reengineering, and expanding their family of cars, with particular emphasis on the Lincoln brand. From physical design to branding strategy, Lincoln has certainly been re-invented. The MKZ and MKX have done well for the brand over the past few years, and the MKS was very well received by the public. Now, Lincoln brings to the market an all new full-size, three-row, luxury crossover that some will love and quite frankly, others will not.

Based on the chassis of the 2010 Ford Flex, the 2010 Lincoln MKT features a sharp, sleek design, that seems almost aerodynamic, and looks like a retro-styled vehicle based on an old 1930′s Lincoln or Cadillac. Aesthetics being a matter of personal taste however, join us after the jump as we see how everything between the doors and under the hood measure up.

Exterior:

Though they share a chassis, the 2010 Ford Flex and MKT have totally different bodies, and that is unfortunate for the MKT. While the MKT does sport some very elegant lines and shaping from some angles, it comes off as an obnoxious eyesore from others; particularly the rear, and we feel that this takes away from the overall visual experience of the vehicle.

The MKT looks decidedly-Lincoln with its split-wing grille, beveled shoulder-line chamfer, and flowing cantrail, full-width horizontal tail-lamps that gracefully flow and wrap themselves around the magnesium power lift-gate. The Panoramic fixed glass Vista roof, body-color rear spoiler, HID headlamps, and heated exterior mirrors complete the look and add a rich and luxurious look. Other exterior amenities include: Lincoln’s SecuriCode invisible keypad, reverse camera and sensor.

All of this sits standard on a set of 19-inch premium painted aluminum wheels, but a 20-inch polished aluminum wheel option is available.

We just feel like Ford did its best to attract younger car shoppers, while making sure that the 50+ something crowd doesn’t shy away from the brand altogether.

Interior:

Contrary to the mixed feelings we had regarding the exterior, the 2010 MKT offered one of the most comfortable and visually pleasing interiors we’ve tested to date. The design is sharp and sleek, and the materials and build quality are impeccable. Standard in the 2010 MKT are AM/FM/CD/DVD/MP3 capabilities, Sirius satellite radio, Microsoft Sync, touch-screen audio and climate controls, rear-view camera, three-zone auto climate control, and 12-way power adjustable heated/cooled leather trim seats with lumbar support.

Our test-car came trimmed with the $4,000 Elite Package which includes; Blind Spot Information System with Cross-Traffic Alert, Voice-Activated Navigation System, THX II Certified 5.1 Surround audio system and panoramic Vista roof. Other options that were included in our fully-loaded test-model were the $895 second-row refrigerator, $195 woven metal trim, $1,295 Adaptive Cruise Control, and $595 Active Park Assist, which allows the car to parallel park itself.

The steeping windshield and sloping roofline moves the third-row seat forward which in turn, kills about 2.5″ of legroom for middle-row passengers. If this small space concession doesn’t cause you much concern, then we can honestly say that the interior of the MKT is without flaw.

Performance:

While powerful engines are certainly always en vogue, V8s seem to be getting less and less popular. The MKT isn’t offered with a V8, but rather consumers can opt between a standard V6 and an EcoBoost V6. The standard power-source for the MKT is a 3.7L V6 24-valve Duratec engine, which produces 268-hp and a maximum torque of 267 lb.-ft. The model that we tested, however, was powered by Ford’s new 3.5L EcoBoost V6 twin-turbocharged engine which delivers 355 horses and a maximum torque of 350 lb.-ft. between 1,500 and 5,250 rpm. When mated to the 6-speed SelectShift Automatic with Paddle Shift Activation, the EcoBoost attains 60 mph in just 6.3 seconds.

That is certainly impressive power for a V6; it performs like a V8, no question about it. True to its EcoBoost moniker however, this engine does not consume the fuel that an equally powerful V8 would; the EPA estimates an average of 16/22 mpg, or 18 mpg combined. We were able to attain a combined 14 mpg throughout our week-long test.

Obviously, one shouldn’t expect the MKT to take turns like a performance vehicle would, but the ride is a substantially smooth and comfortable one nonetheless, being true to the Lincoln brand.

Overall:

The starting MSRP for the ’10 Lincoln MKT is $44,995 (the EcoBoost option will add another $5,000, bringing the total to $49,995). This is slightly higher than that of the Acura MDX, which starts at $42,230, but lower than those of the Audi Q7 3.6 FSI and Mercedes-Benz R-Class crossovers which start at $46,900 and $49,300, respectively. With best-in-class fuel economy however – MDX: 16/21 mpg, Q7: 14/20 mpg, and R-Class: 15/19 mpg – and standard interior features that blow away those of the competition, the MKT is one car that ought to be seriously considered by any crossover shopper; if one can disregard and not be put off by the appearance of the vehicle’s rear-end.

As mentioned in our introduction post to the 2010 Lincoln MKT EcoBoost test-drive, the outside of Ford’s new crossover has a “love it or hate it” styling.

The 2010 Lincoln MKT has landed in egmCarTech’s garage with its new 3.5L twin-turbocharged EcoBoost V6 engine option. The new full-size luxury crossover offers customers a new three-row tourer that delivers fuel-economy, practicality, performance and an amazing interior in one package.

First Impressions: So far we are very impressed with Ford’s new luxury crossover. Every MKT comes standard with Lincoln’s split waterfall grille, a beveled chamfer along the vehicle”s shoulder line and full-width horizontal taillamps that may be unattractive to some.

The “love it or hate it” exterior may turn some away from the MKT but the interior is a different story. It is one of the most luxurious, spacious and comfortable interiors we’ve seen on a crossover. Compared to rivals such as the Buick Enclave, GMC Acadia, Nissan Armada and the Lexus GX470, the interior of the MKT is definitely the clear winner. Ford is sure to prove skeptics wrong that American automakers get lazy when it comes to interior quality. Options like the Microsoft SYNC system, a tech-savvy navigation system, a refrigerator, Active Park Assist, Adaptive Cruise Control, Intelligent Access with Push Button Start and Adaptive Headlamps make the overall experience even better.

Power for the 2010 Lincoln MKT EcoBoost comes from a 3.5L twin-turbocharged V6 EcoBoost making 355-hp and a maximum torque of 350 lb-ft. Fuel-economy for the MKT EcoBoost is rated at 16/22 mpg (city/highway).

Prices for the base MKT start at $44,200 for the 3.7L V6 model. The 2010 MKT EcoBoost starts at $49,200. Our test-vehicle is fitted with the $4,000 Elite Package (Blind Spot Information System with Cross-Traffic Alert, Voice-Activated Navigation System and THX II Certified 5.1 Surround Audio System and a Panoramic Vista Roof), a $895 2nd row refrigerator, $195 woven metal trim, $1,295 Adaptive Cruise Control and $595 Active Park Assist – that brings the total price to $57,970.

Joining the Ford lineup at next month’s 2009 SEMA show, will be the brand’s luxury siblings as Lincoln will be presenting their new luxury project vehicles; the MKS, MKT, and MKZ.

The vehicles will be on display in the Ford booth from Nov. 3-6 at the Las Vegas Convention Center.

“Lincoln as a brand is continuing to attract younger customers to the showroom with products like the MKS, MKZ and the new MKT luxury crossover,” said Amy Marentic, Ford North American Car and Crossovers group marketing manager. “These customers place huge importance on style, design and technology, and these are areas where Lincoln plays well,” said Marentic. “SEMA gives customizers the opportunity to push the boundaries of design, while still focusing on the core strengths of the Lincoln brand.”

The Lincoln project vehicles featured at this year”s SEMA show include:

2009 Lincoln MKS by Raceskinz
The Lincoln MKS Elite is a perfect example of what happens when you merge beauty and technology. Raceskinz is generous with the use of carbon fiber inside and out. And with its high-powered LIIV™ entertainment system, Raceskinz makes sure its occupants stay connected to the world in style.

2010 Lincoln MKT “Panache” by Rick Bottom Designs
Luxury and high style abound in this flamboyant custom vehicle by Rick Bottom. The exterior has been shaved of its door handles, antenna and rear reflectors. A custom-made beltline molding in chrome further accents the body line. Art and science combine for the striking paint treatment. Interior ambience is enhanced with two-toned leather and matching floating armrests. The audio system is powerful and tuned for ultimate sound quality, and the navigation system directs your travels.

2010 Lincoln MKZ by 3dCarbon
The refinement and elegance of the 2010 Lincoln MKZ inspired this look by 3dCarbon, which adds a unique touch to Lincoln”s American style. It”s a realistic and beautiful take on a new classic Lincoln car.
