The world debut of the new 2012 Toyota Camry marks a big point for Toyota Motor Corp. and their future. Because the brand has lost a significant amount of sales to rivals like Hyundai, ToMoCo wants to fight back…hard.

“They (Toyota) have been given a black eye over the past three years for different things, some beyond their control and some that showed kinks in their armor,” said Ed Kim, an industry analyst for AutoPacific Inc., referring to events such as the economic recession, recalls and the Japanese earthquake in March.

At its global launch, ToMoCo went above and beyond with the new 2012 Camry with PR events taking place all over the US, one of which took place at Hollywood’s Paramount Studios in Los Angeles featuring a New York City-themed backdrop with over 200 actors, dancers and musicians.

“It really starts with the all-new Camry; Camry is the keystone of the brand,” said vice president of US sales for ToMoCo, Bob Carter. “Then the cadence comes faster than I’ve seen in 30 years with Toyota.”

To further elaborate on Toyota’s strike back, they also have some significant plans for their own lineup, Scion’s and Lexus’s lineup.

Starting with Toyota, the company will be launching their hybrid Prius v wagon, the plug-in Prius and the Prius c compact hybrid, an updated Tacoma, a battery-powered all-electric RAV4 and a revamped Yaris subcompact. Additionally, for the coming years, in 2013, the Avalon and the Highlander will get a redesign while the RAV4 will be all-new. In 2014, the Toyota Sequoia, Land Cruiser and Tundra will get a redesign. Lastly, in 215, the Toyota Corolla and Prius will be redesigned with the debut of the new FT-86.

Scion will see the new Toyota-based iQ city car and the new rear-wheel drive Toyobaru/Scion FR-S sports car. More details for Scion include a redesign for the xD in 2013 while for 2014, Scion’s A-BAT will make its debut as well.

As for Lexus, the IS and ES will receive redesigns in 2013, the LS will see a redesign in 2014 and the HS and RX will be redesigned for 2015 with the debut of the LF-A roadster.

So the next several years are shaping up to be very important for Toyota as they strive to catch up in sales.

Lexus has been struggling in keeping its luxury sales crown against BMW and Mercedes-Benz and has slipped behind the two German brands. However, in the next few years, Lexus will focus on coming back with a redesigned and re-engineered lineup.

By spring of 2013, the passenger-car lineup of Lexus – including the GS, ES, IS and LS – will be completely redesigned and re-engineered.

One of the main obstacles Lexus executives and engineers in the company say they face is removing some of the numbness from Lexus handling without losing the floaty freeway ride that buyers expect. Heck, we’d be happy with a tighter handling Lexus.

Lexus will also start employing the aggressive design language it showed at the 2011 New York Auto Show with the Lexus LF-Gh Concept.

The 2012 Lexus GS 350 will be unveiled later this month.

So you thought the Royal Wedding was pretty exciting – not us. For us the most exciting part was when Prince William and his new bride, Kate Middleton drove around in a 42-year-old Aston Martin DB6 Volante MkII. However, the upcoming wedding of His Serene Highness Prince Albert II of Monaco will be a tad more exclusive.

Lexus has built a unique hybrid LS 600h L Landaulet featuring a one-piece, transparent polycarbonate roof. The car will serve as the official Royal Wedding vehicle for the marriage, which takes place on Saturday July 2, 2011.

“Lexus is very proud to present this exceptional full hybrid vehicle to H.S.H. the Sovereign Prince of Monaco,” said Andy Pfeiffenberger, Vice President of Lexus Europe. “Our commitment to innovation and sustainable mobility at Lexus matches well with His Serene Highness’ keen interest in promoting sustainable development and environmental protection.”

The Lexus LS 600h L Landaulet took over 2,000 hours to complete.

While the LS 600h L Landaulet is a one off model, we’re pretty sure some other royalty will be interested in owning one.

Press Release:

Lexus Reveals Unique Full Hybrid LS 600h L Landaulet.

• To be used on the occasion of the wedding of His Serene Highness Prince Albert II of Monaco
• Lexus’ full hybrid technology will allow the converted LS 600h L to operate in zero-emission mode for most of the newlyweds ‘tour of the Principalityon July 2nd
• Features one-piece transparent roof manufactured using advanced technologies from aerospace industry

A unique Lexus full hybrid LS 600h L Landaulet (*) featuring a one-piece, transparent polycarbonate roof will serve as the official Royal Wedding car on the occasion of the marriage of His Serene Highness Prince Albert II of Monaco to Ms. Charlene Wittstock on Saturday 2nd July 2011.

Equipped with Lexus Hybrid Drive, Prince Albert’s LS 600h L offers all the performance and comfort expected from a Lexus flagship, and generates significantly lower CO2, NOx and particulate emissions than any comparable car.

The state-of-the-art conversion was undertaken by renowned Belgian coachbuilders Carat Duchatelet in close collaboration with Lexus engineers based in Brussels. It took over 2000 hours to complete. The fundamental objective of the project was to ensure that the finished car maintained the levels of quality and technological sophistication inherent in every Lexus, whilst preserving all the performance, safety and dynamic attributes of the original LS 600h L.

‘We have 40 years experience in making armoured and extended vehicles for Heads of State, Royal Families and VVIPs around the world’, explained Benoit Ceulemans, Executive Director Corporate

(*)A Landaulet is a car body style with a convertible top for the back seat, with the front seat either roofed or open.

Development, Carat Duchatelet. ‘However, this will be a milestone project for us. It is the first time we are publicly associated to such a prestigious project and memorable event.’

The conversion process began with extensive computer-aided design calculations, simulations and 3-D modelling. The reinforcement of the bodyshell required extensive applications of the very latest in honeycomb structures, Kevlar and carbon fibre technology, in order to maintain the vehicle’s chassis stiffness and torsional rigidity following the removal of the roof and pillars.

Parts fabricated from composites require very high temperatures for curing. These components were literally ‘cooked’ onto the bare chassis in a specially prepared oven. As a result, much of the vehicle first had to be completely dismantled, involving the stripping out of some 20,000 mechanical parts, electronic components and interior features and upholstery. Re-assembly occurred under the close supervision of the Lexus engineering team, to ensure consistency with the original vehicle specifications and performance.

Painting and polishing was a key phase before re-assembly. The Royal Wedding LS 600h L is finished in a particularly elegant Midnight Blue livery, which was applied manually using several coats of a bespoke, environmentally-friendly water-based paint.

The transparent roof was a challenge both in its design, as a large single piece with no reinforcements and no pillars, and in its manufacturing, for which Lexus sought the cooperation of a supplier specialising in similar elements for the aerospace industry. The demountable roof has been built in France by one of the world’s leading transparent component-production companies. This highly specialised company mainly supplies complex components of an exceptionally high specification such as helicopter windshields and jet fighter canopies.

The roof is a single, lightweight polycarbonate shell, just 8 mm thick and weighing only 26 kg. Fixed to the body of the Lexus through two intermediary parts, it will allow perfect visibility from both inside and outside the vehicle.

Before production of the transparent roof itself, a template in honeycomb structure and carbon fibre was used to validate shape, structural integrity and a perfect fit to the body of the vehicle within tolerances of less than 1 mm. With the design complete, the extreme precision of production was carried out by robotic tools, which machined the final canopy in a completely automated process.

The final conversion stage of this unique LS 600h L, re-assembly and finishing, involved a team of 10 people in conjunction with Lexus engineers, working full time for over two weeks to ensure that every aspect of the vehicle meets the highest levels of quality and sophistication.

On the day of the wedding, the Landaulet LS 600h L will be used by the royal couple to tour the Principality after the ceremony. The tour will bring them from the Palace on the Rocher down to the harbour, and then along Boulevard Albert I up to the Sainte-Devote Church where, as is the tradition, the princess will leave her bridal bouquet to the waiting Monegasques. For most of this tour, the vehicle will operate in full zero-emission mode, driving under electric-motor power alone, hereby reaffirming Lexus Hybrid Drive’s environmental credentials.

With the end of the celebrations, the unique Lexus Landaulet will be displayed first at the Media Centre and subsequently at the Oceanographic Museum, where visitors will be able to view a remarkable reminder of an exceptional occasion.

Toyota said today that it will be increasing U.S. pricing on most of its vehicles ranging from 1.2 percent to 2.2 percent. The increase extends across the Toyota, Lexus and Scion brands and takes effect in May. The announcement comes as Toyota largely remains shut down in Japan after the massive March 11 earthquake.

The price increases will start with cars built in North America in May and for imported cars that are ordered from Japan in May.

Buyers will see price increases ranging from $200 for the Toyota Yaris hatchback and $900 for the Toyota Land Cruiser and Sequoia. The 2011 Scion xD receives an MSRP increase of $65 or 0.4 percent. The Lexus price adjustments range from $600 for the GX 460 to $900 for the IS-F, LS sedans, GS 450h and the LX 570.

The only 2011 models that won’t see a price increase include the Tacoma, Yaris sedan, Scion tC, Scion xB, Lexus CT 200h and the Lexus LFA.

“There’s the easy way, and there’s the Lexus way,” says Lexus – however, Lexus’ way is really the hard way… the very hard way. Toyota’s luxury brand has just launched a new advertising campaign that show how much painstaking work Lexus puts into developing each and every unit.

“It isn’t enough to just say that we pursue perfection, we want to demonstrate the great lengths we go to in our pursuit,” states Dave Nordstrom, vice president of marketing for Lexus. “The new broadcast spot allows us to focus on the foundation of our vehicles, the chassis, and show its almost unbelievable strength. In fact, we feared that it would be so unbelievable, we invited a physicist and structural engineer to witness the shoot, to prove that it did, in fact, occur without the use of special effects or computer generated-imagery.”

The campaign focuses around a new TV ad spot titled ‘Chain,’ which shows a real-life demonstration of the strength of the chassis of Lexus vehicles. The sport shows a lone crane lifting five Lexus’ – an LS, RX, GS, ES and IS. A $375,000 LFA than comes into the shot and parks directly under the chain of vehicles weighing a total 21,000 pounds.

You can check out the whole Hard Way campaign after the jump.

Press Release:

Sometimes, You Have to Do Things The Hard Way

Lexus Demonstrates the Lengths It Goes to Engineer Automobiles That Inspire Absolute Confidence

TORRANCE, Calif. (Jan. 18, 2011)—There’s the easy way, and there’s the Lexus way. A lone crane slowly lifts the front end of a Lexus LS, then a second vehicle is attached using cables and stretch bars, then another and another and finally, a fifth Lexus vehicle is suspended in midair from the crane, using no support other than the strength of the LS. The gravity-defying vehicles aren’t a figment of your imagination or a camera trick. They are part of a new advertising campaign from the automaker, which debuted on Jan. 16.

Building the Chain

Instead of using special effects to tell the story, the new broadcast TV spot, titled “Chain,” is a real-life demonstration of the strength of the chassis on Lexus vehicles, with the LS taking the lead. Shot on the runway of an airport, a lone crane is used to lift vehicle after vehicle until five Lexus vehicles—an LS, RX, GS, ES and IS—are suspended in midair nose to end. Finally, an LFA comes into the shot and parks directly below the chain of vehicles, and a voiceover states, “The hard way is how Lexus inspires absolute confidence. The hard way is the pursuit of perfection.” That is the kind of confidence that enables the automaker to park the $375,000 LFA below a chain of vehicles weighing a total 21,000 pounds.

Lexus brought in a physicist and a structural engineer to participate in the shoot and witness that the vehicles were attached to each other without any supporting hardware.

The crew needed to make sure the theory that a Lexus could hold five times its weight could be made a reality. A pull test was conducted with two semi wreckers, one acting as dead man, the other as a pull to ensure the vehicle could hold at least 21,000 pounds, or five times its weight. The LS passed with flying colors, holding 29,000 pounds – 8,000 pounds more than expected!

For the final portion of the amazing, or seemingly impossible feat, stretch bars, cables and hooks were utilized to attach the vehicles one at a time to the crane and then to each other. Not only did the experiment work one time, the crew suspended the same vehicles over and over for a period of three days without needing to replace them.

Telling the Stories

In addition to the broadcast TV spot, Lexus has developed an integrated marketing campaign to continue sharing its engineering story. The campaign debuts online with a series of 14 unique videos demonstrating how and why Lexus engineers take the hard way—whether the automaker is taking a blowtorch to the leather interior to see how much heat it can withstand or testing the vehicles in hurricane-force winds and rain. Behind-the-scenes footage for “Chain” was also produced to show consumers how the vehicles were suspended in midair. All stories can be viewed at www.lexus.com/thehardway.

The multifaceted brand campaign includes a robust online, print, mobile and outdoor execution and can also be viewed at YouTube.com/lexusvehicles. The TV spot will air on network, cable prime and cable sports. It will also air during the NFL playoffs, college basketball and on full-episode players.

Lexus is doing all it can to expand its new ‘F’ lineup, which competes with the likes of BMW’s M and Mercedes-Benz’s AMG. Currently, Lexus only offers the IS F but the GS F has been long waiting in the product lineup.

Recent reports suggest that development on the Lexus GS F is well underway. Sources say that power for the GS F will come from a 5.0L V8 engine making around 465-hp. That will allow it to run from 0-60 mph in less than 4.5 seconds, making it a serious contender in the fight against the BMW M5 and the Mercedes-Benz E 63 AMG.

However, instead of focusing just on engine power, engineers at Toyota are trying to keep the weight of the GS F sedan around 3,700 lbs. with aluminum and carbon fiber parts.

The GS F is expected to hit markets as early as 2012 as a 2013 model year. Prices should come in between $90,000 to $100,000.

Sources say that Lexus is also working on a F-Sport package for the LS sedan. However, instead of engine upgrades, the Lexus LS F-Sport will get chassis and body improvements.

Lexus has announced MSRP changes to its 2011 model lineup, which will arrive at dealerships later this summer and early fall. The luxury Toyota brand announced that all 2011 Lexus gas models will receive a standard new brake override system. The braking system enhancement will automatically reduce engine power when the brake pedal and the accelerator pedal are applied simultaneously under certain conditions.

Also, the 2011 Lexus IS adds all-wheel-drive to the 306-hp IS 350 sedan. New HID headlamps with LED daytime running lamps are standard on the IS 350 and available for the IS 250. Along with some minor design changes, the IS models will also feature newly designed 17-inch and optional 18-inch wheels, along with revised exterior choices.

Lexus is also offering the F Sport Package for the IS 250/350 rear-wheel drive (RWD) models, giving them a special suspension tuning and 18-inch alloy wheels with a dark super-chrome finish. The F Sport package also includes a front lip spoiler and rear deck spoiler, a matching dark chrome front grille insert, F Sport badging, and the addition of Ultrasonic Blue Mica to the exterior colors. Interior upgrades include microfiber insert and leather side bolsters.

The Lexus LS 460 gets some suspension upgrades for the all-wheel-drive model while the ES 350 gets a new fuel recommendation from 91-octane to 87-octane.

By now most of you have probably heard of Toyota’s latest recall involving flaws in the valve springs that could cause the engine to stall while the vehicle is in motion. Toyota has already issued a recall of 91,903 Lexus and Crown vehicles in Japan and plans on recalling at least 138,000 in the United States. The global recall involves some 270,000 vehicles.

Toyota admitted today that it knew about the engine problem two years ago and changed the spring part to correct it in August 2008. That is why the recall does affect vehicles build after August 2008. However, for models built before that with faulty valve springs, Toyota didn’t think a recall was necessary until now.

Toyota spokesman Hideaki Homma said that the company had thought it was an isolated problem that didn’t require a recall.

“We changed the part in August because then the problem won’t happen at all, even if tiny particles enter during manufacturing,” Homma said. “We are talking about microscopic particles here.”

Nonetheless, when complaints started climbing, Toyota figured it wasn’t an isolated problem and decided to issue a recall.

Toyota officially announced today that it will be conducting a voluntary safety recall on approximately 3,800 late 2009 and certain 2010 model year Lexus LS 460 and LS 600h L vehicles in the United States. The models being recalled are equipped with Variable Gear Ratio Steering (VGRS).

The VGRS system in the Lexus LS allows easier handling during low-speed driving and provides better stability during high-speed driving.

Toyota said that the “VGRS system may exhibit a temporary steering wheel off-center condition after driving away quickly from a very tight turn where the steering was at full lock position. The steering wheel off-center position will automatically be corrected in approximately five seconds by the VGRS system as the vehicle is driven.”

Toyota said that the driver may notice the system auto correcting as the steering wheel moves slowly to the center position while driving straight during VGRS correction. Under certain circumstances, the LS condition will not occur during normal driving such as changing lanes or turning.

The 3,800 Lexus LS units being recalled in the United States are a part of a worldwide recall of 11,500 units.

Click through for the list of FAQs involved with the recall.

Lexus LS Variable Gear Ratio Steering Recall Customer FAQs

Which models is Lexus recalling, and how many vehicles are affected?
Lexus is recalling approximately 3,800 late 2009 and certain 2010 model year Lexus LS 460 and LS 600h L vehicles in the U.S. to address an issue with the Variable Gear Ratio Steering (VGRS) system.

What is the condition that prompted Lexus to take this action?
On certain Lexus vehicles equipped with VGRS, under certain limited driving circumstances the steering wheel may temporarily become off-centered.

If the steering wheel is fully turned in one direction to the end of its travel (full lock position) and then very quickly turned in the opposite direction, the driver may observe that the center position of the steering wheel is temporarily off-centered. The VGRS system will self-correct the steering wheel off-center condition as the vehicle is driven for a few seconds (approximately five seconds).

Due to the limited circumstances in which this can occur, this condition will not occur during normal driving, such as lane changes.

What is the VGRS system?
The VGRS system enhances the relationship between the amount the steering wheel must turn and the reaction of the vehicle’s front wheels, which varies depending on the situation. For example, VGRS increases the gear ratio at high speeds to make handling less sensitive and twitchy. It can also lower its gear ratio to make less turning of the steering wheel necessary while maneuvering at slow speeds.

What can drivers do to prevent this condition from occurring?
Until the remedy has been completed on the vehicle, drivers can take the following steps to minimize the likelihood that this condition will occur:

1. When turning left or right at sharp intersections, when making a tight u-turn, or when parallel parking the vehicle, the steering wheel may reach the end of travel (full lock position). If this occurs, the driver should slowly turn the steering wheel back in the opposite direction and slowly exit the turn.
2. If possible, avoid quickly turning the steering wheel in the opposite direction, especially if the steering wheel was turned to the end of travel (full lock position).
3. Do not attempt to duplicate this condition.

What action should drivers take if they experience this condition?
If the driver notices an apparent steering wheel off-center condition when driving straight, he or she should carefully steer the vehicle and not make any sudden maneuvers. Steering should be based on the vehicle direction of travel rather than the steering wheel position. The VGRS will correct the steering wheel off-center condition automatically (approximately 5 seconds).

How many customer complaints did you receive to prompt this action?
Lexus recently received one customer report in the U.S. regarding this condition and has received no reports of any accidents or injuries.

What is Lexus doing to address this issue?
As soon as the remedy parts are available, Lexus will begin sending notification letters by first class mail to owners of the involved vehicles. The letter will advise owners to bring their vehicle to a Lexus dealer to have the Steering Control computer replaced with a newly designed one at no charge. The computer replacement is expected to take less than one hour, depending on dealer workload.

Will customers have to pay any money out of pocket for this repair?
No. The Steering Control computer will be replaced with a newly designed one at no charge.

Is it safe to continue driving my vehicle until the update becomes available?
Lexus believes that the involved vehicles are safe to drive. If the driver notices an apparent steering wheel off-center condition when driving straight, he or she should carefully steer the vehicle and not make any sudden maneuvers.

Are any other Toyota or Lexus vehicles affected by this recall?
No other Lexus, Toyota or Scion vehicles in the North American market are involved in this Safety Recall.

What should customers do if they still have questions or concerns?
Owners with questions or concerns are asked to contact their local Lexus dealer for diagnosis and repair, if applicable. Owners may also contact Lexus Customer Satisfaction at 1-800-255-3987 or visit www.lexus.com/recall.

Toyota has said that it will recall 4,500 Lexus LS models in Japan and another 7,000 units overseas to fix a computerized steering problem. The company said it has received 12 complaints about the problem in Japan, but has no reports of any accidents worldwide, according to spokesman Paul Nolasco.

Toyota is recalling four Lexus models, the LS 460, LS 460 L, LS 600h, and LS 600h L.

The recall involves a computerized system that oversees how the steering wheel controls the tires. The steering system is standard on Japanese models but is optional on some units sold overseas.

The system varies the amount that the steering wheel turns the tires on the car, allowing the driver to turn the wheel less at low speeds when attempting to navigate or park in a tight spot. It also provides finer control at high speeds. According to Nolasco, the system can take “a few seconds” to return the steering to normal after it has been adjusted.

The recall includes a total of 11,500 units of the Lexus LS, including 3,800 in the United States.

Press Release:

Lexus Debuts Revised LS 460 With New Styling And Telematics

* New Exterior Styling Includes Revised Front Fascia, Headlamps and Taillamps
* New Optional Sport Package For RWD Models Combines Sport Tuned Air Suspension, Brembo Brakes, 19-inch Forged Wheels with Aero Body Design Elements and Exclusive Interior Features
* New Audio and Telematics Technology Adds Convenience

The Lexus LS 460 flagship luxury sedans debut revised styling, new electronics and a new optional performance-tuned Sport Package for 2010. Lexus continues to offer the LS 460 and long-wheelbase LS 460 L, both available in rear-wheel or all-wheel drive.

In front, the 2010 LS 460 models stand apart with a revised grille, bumper, and headlamps, while rear styling is enhanced with revised taillamps, license plate surround and exhaust diffusers. New side mirrors feature integrated turn signals, and the standard 18-inch wheels have a new 10-spoke design.

The new Safety Connect™ and Lexus Enform™ telematics systems are available with a complimentary one-year trial subscription. Safety Connect is standard on all LS 460 models. Lexus Enform with Safety Connect, available on vehicles equipped with the optional navigation system, adds premium subscription convenience services.

For drivers who desire a more engaging driving experience, Lexus offers an all-new Sport Package for the rear-wheel drive (RWD) 2010 LS 460. The Sport Package combines distinctive Aero kit exterior styling with special air suspension tuning and exclusive interior features. The exterior styling is also available alone as the Appearance Package. Common to both packages are the unique front grille and Aero kit, which features a front lower spoiler, side rocker panels, and rear lower spoiler. RWD models with the Appearance Package also ride on 19-inch five-spoke wheels.

The Lexus LS was among the first cars in the world to offer a Pre-Collision system, and for 2010 offers the available Advanced Pre-Collision System (APCS) that debuted on the 2009 Pebble Beach® Edition LS 600h L. APCS is the world’s first active pedestrian system designed to help detect pedestrians in the vehicle’s path and to react by braking. Using two small cameras mounted at the front of the car that work in conjunction with millimeter-wave radar, APCS is sensitive enough to detect certain objects with low reflectivity or an object”s lateral position.

As part of APCS, the Driver Monitor System is available for the first time on the LS 460 L. A camera mounted on the steering column monitors the orientation of the driver’s face. If the camera detects that it appears the driver is not looking directly ahead for a few seconds or more, and/or if an obstacle is detected ahead, the system alerts the driver first with a warning chime and a flashing light.

As the car gets closer to the obstacle, APCS can begin to gently apply the brakes on its own. The system also prepares the brake system to respond with full force when activated by the driver and automatically retracts the front seatbelts in anticipation of a possible impact. To help assist the driver in maneuvering around the obstacle, the system reprograms the steering ratio, amplifying the intensity and quickness of the steering response.

When equipped with APCS, the LS 460 L adds Lane Keep Assist (LKA) and Dynamic Radar Cruise Control. The front-mounted cameras detect visible lane markings on the road, and if the system detects the driver drifting into another lane, it sounds a warning and can apply torque to the electric steering system to help the driver stay in the intended lane.

Engine/Transmission/Drivetrain/Performance
The Lexus LS 460 models deliver the luxury of powerful, smooth performance from a 4.6-liter V8 teamed with an eight-speed automatic transmission. The engine produces 380 horsepower and 367 lb.-ft. of peak torque in rear-wheel-drive configuration; 357 horsepower and 344 lb.-ft. of torque with all-wheel drive (AWD).

The Lexus V8″s superior performance is due in large part to innovative technologies, including the world’s first electric motor-driven Variable Valve Timing with intelligence and Electronically (VVT-iE) controlled intake cam. The electrically controlled intake achieves superior engine-startup operation and high-output performance.

A dual fuel-injection system, with both port and direct injection, optimizes efficiency under all conditions. The direct injection helps provide cylinder cooling that allows the high compression ratio (11.8:1) needed to produce such high power cleanly and efficiently. The dual-tract intake system and an Acoustic Control Induction System (ACIS) contribute to the smooth, linear power delivery.

The Lexus eight-speed automatic transmission allows gear ratios that maximize torque up to the tire-grip limitations in the lower ranges yet maintains quietness and admirable fuel efficiency at higher speeds. The LS 460 can accelerate from zero-to-60 mph in about 5.4 seconds; 5.9 seconds for the all-wheel drive models.

Even with that level of performance, the LS 460 achieves an EPA-estimated 16 mpg city and 24 mpg highway rating (AWD is 16 city/23 highway) and meets Ultra-Low Emissions Vehicle II (ULEV II) certification. A new ECO drive indicator helps encourage economical driving.

The AWD versions of the LS 460 and LS 460 L utilize a drivetrain almost identical to their hybrid counterpart, the LS 600h L. The AWD system features a highly compact center TORSEN® limited-slip differential that distributes drive torque between the front and rear wheels. In normal driving conditions, the front and rear torque distribution ratio is set at a rear-bias 40:60, which aids agility. The system can instantly and optimally vary torque distribution between 30:70 and 50:50, depending on driving conditions, thus helping to ensure excellent traction performance and driving stability.

The AWD models also have standard 18-inch wheels with all-season tires, and a wood and leather-trimmed heated steering wheel for added luxury. All models offer the Cold Weather Package that includes a windshield deicer, upgraded battery, and more effective heater core.

Chassis/Body/Suspension/Tires/Brakes
The LS 460 delivers the ultra-comfortable ride quality that has become synonymous with the Lexus flagship LS sedans. The air-suspension system, which is standard on all-wheel drive models and optional for the LS 460 L RWD, effectively helps control body lean to provide an extraordinarily smooth ride. The system offers three settings ““ including “Sport” ““ allowing the driver to custom-tailor suspension response from maximum comfort to sharpest handling. The LS 460 turning circle (curb to curb) – 35.4 ft. for the LS 460 RWD; 37.4 ft. for the LS 460 AWD; 36.1 ft. for the LS 460 L RWD and 38.7 ft. for LS 460 L AWD ““ yields excellent maneuverability.

The new Sport Package is the first of its kind for the LS and is available only on the LS 460 RWD model. Behind the 19-inch split 10-spoke forged alloy wheels are Brembo brakes, and the package tightens handling response with an exclusive sport-tuned air suspension with specific stabilizer bars and shock absorbers. Inside the LS 460, the Sport Package adds an exclusive perforated Black/Saddle leather interior with sport front seats, a unique leather-trimmed steering wheel and paddle shifters for the eight-speed automatic transmission.

In addition to standard air suspension, the LS 460 all-wheel drive models come with Variable Gear-Ratio Steering (VGRS), and Adaptive Variable Suspension (AVS) ““ all available for the LS 460 L RWD model. The computer-controlled AVS system continuously adjusts shock-absorber damping rates to help provide comfort and handling precision. The VGRS system selects the steering gear ratio according to vehicle speed, enhancing responsiveness and driver control. VGRS also partners with the Vehicle Dynamics Integrated Management (VDIM) system, making minor steering adjustments to help improve control during challenging road conditions.

The interior cabin of the LS demands not only exceptional silence, but the quality of the sounds have to be pleasing to the occupants. For example, engineers tuned the sound of the doors opening and closing by studying the sounds of skillfully crafted wood doors in luxury homes. Even the sounds of onboard motors for all the power assists were specially tuned. One example: one-touch power window motors that reduce speed near the closure point. Laminated side glass (front on LS 460 and front/rear on LS 460 L) further reduces outside noise intrusion.

Safety/Security Features
The Lexus LS 460 provides one of the most advanced and comprehensive integrations of vehicle-safety technology today. New Active Front Headrests on all models are designed to help mitigate whiplash injury in a rear collision. Active safety features include the Vehicle Dynamics Integrated Management (VDIM) system, which by itself integrates and manages the Electronically Controlled Brake (ECB) system, Electronic Power Steering (EPS), Vehicle Stability Control (VSC), Anti-lock Braking System (ABS), Electronic Brake-force Distribution (EBD), and engine torque via the electronically controlled throttle.

Taking input from an array of sensors in the vehicle, VDIM anticipates the onset of a vehicle skid or slide while cornering, and it then helps correct the condition with a combination of braking, throttle, and steering control in a way that is essentially transparent to the driver. The VDIM system gathers data from more sources ““ processed earlier and more quickly than in previous dynamic handling systems ““ to help make operation in the LS 460 even more seamless and effective. If it becomes necessary to extricate the car from deep snow or other difficult conditions, such as mud or sand, the “TRAC off” switch may be useful to turn off the VSC.

The LS 460 is standard-equipped with eight airbags, including side curtain airbags, front seat-mounted side airbags and knee airbags for the driver and front passenger. Rear seat-mounted side airbags are also available. Standard xenon high-intensity discharge (HID) headlamps provide superior road illumination. The standard Adaptive Front lighting System (AFS) helps to illuminate a turn or curve as the driver steers into it.

The LS 460 and LS 460 L models offer Advanced Parking Guidance System (APGS) to assist with parallel and back-in parking. Once the driver has correctly positioned the car and identified the desired parking space via the navigation screen, APGS uses the rear back-up camera, parking sonar sensors and electric power steering system to guide the car into the space. The driver controls vehicle speed via the brake.

Luxury/Comfort/Convenience
Already lauded for its comprehensive luxury, the LS 460 gains numerous additional user-tech amenities for 2010. The driver”s seat now features a standard slide-away feature that makes ingress/egress more comfortable; a new multi-information display uses a large center console LCD screen; the available navigation system employs voice command casual-language based voice recognition; Bluetooth® phonebook download capability (with available navigation system), and new music playing capability with Bluetooth audio streaming and USB/iPod® connectivity. In addition to the auxiliary jack located in the front center console a USB jack connects an iPod® or MP3-capable digital music player. The iPod can be controlled through the steering wheel audio controls or headunit.

The 2010 Lexus LS models continue a tradition of offering a comprehensive roster of true-luxury standard features. Customers can choose from four leather and wood-trimmed interior combinations. Pampering begins with a 16-way power driver”s seat and 12-way power front passenger seat, dual zone automatic climate control with smog sensor, and a power tilt/slide moonroof.

Controls in the LS 460 models provide the utmost convenience; including SmartAccess with pushbutton start/stop, and a power tilt/telescoping steering wheel with audio, brake hold and multi-information display controls. An automatic electric parking brake system eliminates the need to press a foot-operated pedal.
The LS 460 L augments the already long list of luxury amenities by including as standard: Intelligent High Beams that automatically dim for oncoming traffic; an integrated XM® Satellite Radio receiver; climate-controlled front seats; heated rear seats; heated steering wheel; power rear sunshade; a one-touch open/close power trunk; power door closers, Intuitive Park Assist and headlamp washers. These luxury features are available for the LS 460.

Luxury Options
Lexus offers several LS 460″s option packages. The Comfort Package includes a power trunk closer, Intuitive Park Assist, heated rear seats and heated and cooled front seats. The Comfort Plus Package includes those features plus semi-aniline leather, power rear seats with lumbar massage and power butterfly headrests, and rear seat-mounted side airbags.

The optional Luxury Package on the LS 460 L now includes rear seat-mounted side airbags. A semi-aniline leather trimmed interior, an Alcantara headliner, and rear door power sunshades are also part of the package.

A Rear Seat Upgrade package for the LS 460 L models now includes lumbar massage and power butterfly headrests for the power rear seats with memory and lumbar massage and rear seat-mounted side airbags. The rest of the package remains as before, with dual-zone rear air conditioning with air purifier and additional rear air ducts, additional wood trim, rear cool box, rear door power sunshades, and rear audio controls.

The Executive Class Seating Package for the LS 460 L likewise now includes power butterfly rear headrests and lumbar massage for the left rear seat. The rest of the package continues as before and includes four-zone independent front and rear air conditioning with Lexus’ Air Purification system and ceiling climate diffusers; rear-door power sunshades with a fixed rear console and foldout table; and a right rear-seat recliner with ottoman leg rest.

This package”s ottoman seat reclines up to 45 degrees with an upper-back recliner featuring a 17-degree angle adjustment. In addition, the available left-rear power seat also reclines up to 38 degrees, and the rear seat moves front to back approximately three inches. The climate control is further upgraded with an infrared sensor located in the headliner that measures temperature at the lap, upper body and seat on each side to adjust airflow appropriately.

A multi-function massage feature includes an enhanced massage mode for the right-rear seat. The massage feature can be used alone or in conjunction with the seat heater or cooler. This comprehensive package also equips the LS 460 L with a rear-seat entertainment system using a nine-inch LCD screen that deploys from the ceiling.

The available 19-speaker, 450-watt Mark Levinson® Reference Surround Sound system creates a new benchmark for mobile audio systems with its theater-level entertainment experience and includes a DVD/CD changer. Bluetooth® technology features voice input of telephone numbers.

Exterior Design
The LS 460 flagship showcases the brand”s L-finesse design philosophy, revealing a family resemblance that conveys elegance, refinement and a strong emotional appeal. Minimal body gaps, a low front grille and deep-drawn fenders all contribute to the car’s distinctive, muscular profile. Lexus” attention to detail is seen in the integrated dual chrome exhaust tips and the one-piece chrome window surround.

Changes to the color palate for 2010 reflect the brand”s focus on luxury design: Matador Red Mica replaces Nobel Spinel Mica; Satin Cashmere Metallic replaces Golden Almond Metallic; Peridot Mica replaces Verdigris Mica, and Deep Sea Mica replaces Black Sapphire Pearl.

Interior Design
The thin film transistor instrument panel sets the tone for blending functional high-tech with pleasing aesthetics. Tasteful wood and chrome trim as well as refinements to the interior lighting create a rich feeling, including LED ambient interior lighting with spot-lamp illumination in front and rear. Even the angles on the center console were optimized to enhance comfort for the driver and front passenger.

As a further example of Lexus’ passionate attention to luxury detail, the LS steering wheel is wrapped by supple, twice-buffed leather. The water-based dye used on the leather provides a more natural feel, and a whipstitch pattern ensures a smooth wheel surface without any unevenness or jumps in the stitch.

Lexus Enform™ with Safety Connect™
The Lexus LS offers an all-new telematics system, Lexus Enform with Safety Connect, available by subscription. Complimentary one-year trial subscriptions are included on all purchases of new Lexus vehicles equipped with these features. Both the Lexus Enform and the Safety Connect response center operate 24 hours a day, 7 days a week””every day of the year.

Safety Connect, the cornerstone of the services, is standard on 2010 LS models and offers four safety and security features: Automatic Collision Notification, Stolen Vehicle Location, Emergency Assistance Button (SOS), and Enhanced Roadside Assistance, which adds GPS data to the already included warranty-based Lexus roadside service.

Lexus Enform, available only on navigation-equipped vehicles, includes all of the Safety Connect features and builds upon them with the premium services of Destination Assist and eDestination. Destination Assist agents are available via the on-board cellular equipment and can help drivers find a specific address, a business by name, or a type of business (e.g., gas station, movie theater, etc.), and even Zagat®-rated restaurants, and then send the coordinates to the navigation system for routing. With eDestination, drivers can go online via LexusDrivers.com to save and sort destinations in up to 20 folders, each holding as many as 10 destinations. Then drivers can send the locations””up to 200 at a time””to their vehicle, where they will be available for download into the navigation system. Online, drivers can create personalized location names (e.g., “Favorite sushi,” “1 PM Appt,” “Kids” doc,” etc.) and even list notes about their saved locations, all helping them see exactly the information they choose in the vehicle.

Lexus Insider, a complimentary, opt-in service is also available without a subscription on all Lexus Enform-equipped vehicles. This feature offers in-vehicle audio casts that provide owners access to useful vehicle tips and event information, and insights into exclusive owners’ benefits ““ all designed to further enhance the Lexus experience.

XM ““ Beyond Radio
Lexus Enform vehicles are factory ready for subscriptions to a variety of innovative XM services. Lexus Enform vehicles feature XM NavTraffic® and XM NavWeather™ services. XM NavTraffic informs the driver of current traffic conditions with real-time traffic displays. When traffic problems are detected the navigation system alerts the driver so that the route can be adjusted. XM NavWeather provides near real-time weather conditions as well as spoken and nav-screen forecasts, both based on official National Weather Service data.
Lexus Enform also provides the platform for XM® Sports and Stocks, which features in-vehicle updates on sports and stocks so drivers can stay connected to their favorite teams and investment data while on the road.

XM Sports provides game results and schedules for up to five personally selected national league sports teams while XM Stocks supplies data for up to 10 personally selected stocks. After inputting their selections, drivers can access the reports through the navigation system, or by using the voice command system, adding a new level of flexibility.

XM services require separate XM subscriptions. The XM Sports and Stocks service is included with an XM® radio subscription. All XM services offer complimentary 90-day trial subscriptions.

Warranty
All new Lexus vehicles come with a 48-month/50,000-mile basic limited warranty with roadside assistance for 48-months/unlimited miles. Powertrain and restraint system coverage is provided for 72 months/70,000 miles. Corrosion perforation protection is covered for 72 months, regardless of mileage.
