It’s time to say farewell to one of the most successful supercars of all time – the Lamborghini Murcielago. Earlier this year in February, Lamborghini produced the 4,000th Murcielago at its headquarters in Sant’Agata Bolognese – a LP 670-4 SuperVeloce.

The Italian supercar maker announced today that on May 11, 2010, another Murcielago LP 670-4 SuperVeloce left the production line – the 4,099 became the last unit of the Murcielago to be ever produced.

“For almost a decade, the Murcielago was the icon of the Lamborghini brand, and it was enormously successful in the process,” says Stephan Winkelmann, President and CEO of Automobili Lamborghini. “The Murciélago embodies the pure, unadulterated values of our brand. It is truly extreme, uncompromising and unmistakably Italian. This already makes it one of the legends of the sports car world. But the Lamborghini story continues. In 2011, we will take a huge step into the future with the successor to the Murciélago ““ with the most innovative technology and, once again, truly stunning design.”

The last model featured “Arancio Atlas” paintwork and is headed over to a Swiss customer.

The “end of production” of the Murcielago was celebrated in the factory on November 5, 2010, with a special exhibition of the most iconic V12 cars of Lamborghini’s history, followed by a parade in Sant’Agata Bolognese. The Murcielago will later be replaced by the much-anticipated Jota.

We’ve been hearing rumors about the lightweight version of the Lamborghini Murcielago since May 2007 (and maybe even earlier). Recently more details of the Lamborghini Murcielago SV (or Superveloce) have popped up online.

Sources say that the special-edition Murcielago LP670-4 SV will produce 30-hp more than the base LP640 for a total of 661-hp. That should allow the car to sprint from 0 to 60 mph in 3.2 seconds with a top speed of 213 mph. The Murcielago SV will weigh about 220lbs less than the 3,663lbs standard car.

It will be built on an all-wheel-drive architecture with upgrades carbon ceramic brakes as standard. Appearance wise the Lamborghini Murcielago SV will be more aggressive looking than its sibling and will use a lot of carbon fiber body parts to drop the weight. Sources say look for matte-black finish on the outside and an interior mix of carbon fiber and alcantara

The Lamborghini Murcielago SV is expected to make its debut at the 2009 Geneva Motor Show in March.
