Jaguar is in the holiday spirit and has released a teaser shot of its upcoming Jaguar XF Sportbrake on Twitter.

So does this Jaguar XF Sportbrake photo tell us anything? Not really. All we really see is Santa loading up the Jaguar XF station wagon with gifts offering a quick glimpse of the inside of the car.

The Jaguar XF Sportbrake is due to hit European roads early next year. No plans have been announced for the stateside.

Based out of Stowe, VT, I’m personally smack dab in the middle of the snowbelt; Audis, Subarus, Benzes and BMWs are the bread and butter of everyday car culture. Though there is one brand missing from this equation though and with good reason: Jaguar. A town of 4,000 in rural Vermont might not seem all that important to the famous British marque, but it is a great indicator of the snowbelt, which demands all wheel drive, as indicated by Jag boss Adrian Hallmark:

“In the past all-wheel-drive has meant Audi and Quattro, but now it is something that the market expects…In the snowbelt of America it accounts for 70 per cent of sales, and overall it accounts for 30 per cent of sales, so we are working on it and in the final stages of a decision. It is core to our future offering.”

What does this mean for prospective and current Jaguar owners? There will be all wheel drive XJs and XFs available in the next two years instead of pursuing hybrids, which Jag has decided is something that their customers are not willing to pay for yet.

Jaguar has made its most efficent model yet, and to prove it, a British team took the XF 2.2 Diesel across North America from New York to Los Angeles, and came up with an impressive average figure of 62.9mpg.

Independant testers David and Alexander Madgwick took the UK spec XF 2.2 diesel through 11 states and three time zones throughout an 8 day journey. Only four fuel stops were required for the entire 2,884 mile trip.

Accompanying the pair on the trip, which closed Monday, was Paul Alcock, XF Project Manager,who says “This project was designed primarily to test the potential economy of the XF 2.2. The incredible figures achieved by the car were accomplished through making every element of the new XF as efficient as possible – from its aerodynamics to its four-cylinder 2.2-litre diesel engine linked to an eight-speed gearbox. The whole XF team is incredibly proud of what’s been achieved and it’s a graphic demonstration of the strength, engineering integrity and efficiency of the car.”

The automaker also says they took care not to compromise the quality that Jaguar fans expect. All the standard trim, seating capacity, and electronic extras are still standard for the car.

The Jaguar XF Diesel is now the first diesel Jaguar to enter the USA and will be making a cross-country trip from New York City to Los Angeles, California. The trip will last a total of 7 days covering 2,800 miles and 11 states.

The Jaguar XF Diesel will end its journey at the 2011 LA Auto Show.

Why is Jag doing this? Probably to see what time of traction the XF Diesel gathers in the United States. Eventually, the automaker may start offering the diesel XF in the United States – which would be an awesome idea.

Earlier this year, an XF 2.2 was driven from the factory at Castle Bromwich to Munich – a distance of 816 miles – on a single tank of diesel and achieved an average of 57 mpg.

Jaguar is expected to ‘sportify’ its lineup over the next couple of years with a bunch of new additions including a new sports car based on the new C-X16 Concept that was shown at the 2011 Frankfurt Motor Show in September. Jaguar officials say that work is also under way on a new compact sedan but that model is still a few years away from hitting your local Jag dealership.

All this is a part of Tata Motors $2.45 billion investment in Jaguar and Land Rover over the next 5 years to produce new vehicles, engines and beef up the two brand’s production facilities.

The new Jaguar compact sedan that we’ve been hearing about forever will compete with the likes of the BMW 3-Series, Audi A4, Mercedes-Benz C-Class, Lexus IS and the upcoming Cadillac ATS. The model is expected arrive sometime in 2014.

The gorgeous Jaguar C-X16 Concept (pictured) is expected to enter production as early as next year as a competitor to the Porsche Cayman/Boxster. Internally, the model is known as the ‘spiritual successor to the E-Type.’

While the Jaguar XF recently received a refresh, the larger Jaguar XJ will be getting its refresh in 2013.

A redesign of the Jaguar XK is expected in 2013.

Of course, we already know that the Jaguar C-X75 will be entering production, Only 250 units will be built with prices ranging from $1.2 million to $1.5 million.

With a quickly growing popularity in China and close to 100 dealers, Jaguar Land Rover has been seeking out a company to manufacture and sell the brand’s vehicles there. Currently a deal is in the works, and it looks like JLR will soon be partnered with Chery Automobile for the manufacturing vehicles to be sold strictly to the Chinese market.

Regulations in China require any foreign car manufacturers to have both a joint venture contract with a native brand and a sub-brand strictly for its own geographical market. Chery Automobile, the biggest vehicle exporter in China, has been contacted by a number of other companies, as well. The Chinese government has been hesitant to bring in an overabundance of foreign car makers as they feel the contracts it will be engaging in will outlast the spike in sales.

Currently, neither JLR or Chery have commented on the matter, however it has been reported that both are looking to proceed, and attempting to require regulatory approval.

In order to keep up with tough German competition, Jaguar plans on releasing all-wheel driver versions of the XF and XJ models sometime in the next three years.

Apart from these upcoming models, the only other Jaguar that came with all-wheel drive was the X-Type, which was built on a different platform. Adrain Hallmark, Jaguar’s global brand director, notes that taking the rear-wheel drive models and making them all-wheel is an extremely high cost move, but says it is a necessary change for the automaker.

Not only are the German luxury brands a concern, but some of Jaguar’s best markets are in areas that benefit from an all-wheel drive car, which are along the east coast.

While the XJ is doing well against the other vehicles in the segment, there is still room for improvement, and the XF hasn’t done well since its 2008 launch. The addition of all-wheel drive should help boost sales numbers and improve ratios against brands like BMW and Audi.

Jaguar and Land Rover have been working hard to expand their lineups in order to keep up with their competitors. As a result, a new boss was appointed for the brands’ North American branch. And to make sure that Jaguar and Land Rover are on par with the sales of direct competitors like BMW, Audi and Mercedes-Benz, a new sales goal has been set, albeit an ambitious one too.

“Both brands have some similarities in the fact that we are planning for growth predicated on product introductions,” said Andy Goss, Jaguar and Land Rover North America’s new boss.

Goss wants to boost annual US sales of the two English brands over the next five years to 50,000 units per year. To achieve that, Goss said that the challenge for Land Rover and Jaguar is to attract new buyers. Additionally, because Jaguar’s 160 dealers in the US all differ in terms of their appearances, Goss wants to streamline the themes of the dealers to a “common standard by 2012.”

“From the network perspective, dealing with the volume isn’t the issue,” said Goss. “In terms of the network, it is getting them ready to understand that they will be dealing with people they haven’t dealt with before. You have to make them feel special.”

And to us, that shouldn’t be too hard. Driving a Land Rover or a Jaguar can be a special occasion because they offer unique driving experiences from their comforting warmth of Britishness. But it’s not the cars that are the issue, it’s getting people to notice them.

Compared to Goss’s new sales goal, Land Rover last year sold only 31,864 units total here in the states while Jaguar only sold 13,340 cars in 2010.

Tata sold 62,090 Jaguar and Land Rover units for the fiscal year globally, up 9 percent from a year earlier.

The one and only estate that British make, Jaguar, has ever made was the X-Type Estate. Because it was basically a gussied up Ford Mondeo with the infamous Jaguar leaper on the hood and quad-headlights a-la 1990s XJ, it was never a fine moment for this Jaguar. However, the whole idea of a Jaguar estate is about to be revamped as the Coventry-based manufacture has just officially announced that they will be building an estate version of the beautiful Jaguar XF. PS—side note, I know we’re not in Britain, but “estate” sounds much better than “station wagon.”

Anyway, at the introduction of Jaguar’s new turbodiesel four-banger for the XF, Jaguar also confirmed that the XF Estate will make it to production with its sights aimred directly at the Audi A6 Avant.

“I can’t say when or how much, but it is on the cards,” said Andrew Whyman, XF Vehicle Engineering Manager for Jaguar. “Of the design, we can expect something special. Ian Callum (Jaguar’s design chief) will do something different with this. It will be slightly different, with character and panache.”

Fitting in with Jaguar’s and Land Rover’s long-term plan to introduce up to 40 significant updates to the brands over the next five years, despite this confirmation, any idea of the XF Estate’s R&D progress is currently unknown.

Jaguar has certainly come a long way to become a major player in the luxury market as the current XK, XJ and XF are all models to lust after in one form or another. And just as the W212 Mercedes-Benz E63 AMG Estate, F10 BMW M5 Estate, and the Cadillac CTS-V Sport Wagon are on the way, it seems like this is perfect timing for Jaguar to release an XF-R Estate. I hope they do.

Recently, Jaguar released the fastest pussy cat they have ever built. Known as the Jaguar XKR-S, the model is powered by a 5.0L supercharged V8 making 550-hp with a maximum torque of 502 lb-ft of torque. 0 to 60 mph comes in 4.2 seconds with a top speed of 186 mph.

According to insiders, Jaguar is also planning a soft-top convertible version of the XKR-S. Since”the car was designed as a convertible.” the aluminium structure means it won’t need additional bracing to deal with the increase in power, he said.

The 550-hp 5.0 liter supercharged V8 will also make its way into the XF, the insider said. That will give the soon to be known XFR-S the ability to go from 0 to 60 mph in close to 4 seconds with a top speed of 180 mph.

Jaguar has been doing very well with themselves, reinventing their image with the great XF and the new XJ. With that success, Jaguar announced a little a while ago that a baby Jaguar or a BMW 3-Series competitor was in the works a la X-Type replacement. But the Mother Cat just announced that the baby Jag will have to wait.

According to insider sources, Jag’s future is currently under heavy maintenance with its new Tata-based management, which is still led by Adrian Hallmark.

Next to the baby Jag, they also had an SUV dubbed the X760 put on the bulletin board for launch around 2014, just before an all-new XF replacement in 2015. But with the new plans, the Jaguar XF replacement takes priority.

“We definitely won’t kill today’s XF with a new small car,” Hallmark said. “We’ll kill it with the new XF.”

Hallmark said that they want to also wait until the new 2012 F30 BMW 3-Series and the new C-Class so they can have a better idea of what the new standards will be in order to stay competitive. With the way cars are growing in size, we can see the baby Jaguar being as big as the current XF.

“The small car has to be designed and engineered to be exactly right for its market,” said Bob Joyce, Jaguar’s chief of engineering.

This all adds up to say that Jaguar is being very cautious with how it will execute its baby Jaguar and its outcome is very dependent on the future success of the current XF.

“We’ve got to be careful and not be too British and think that just because we didn’t hit the bullseye first time, we can’t hit it a second time,” Hallmark said, “We haven’t realized the full potential of the XF yet. It was a vision and it has been very successful. Why can’t we do the same in the segment below?”

Speculation has it that the new 6-cylinder engine will produce a little more than 300-hp to compete with the likes of similar engines offered by BMW, Mercedes-Benz and Audi. The engine will most likely be mated to a 8-speed transmission.

Expect to see the new 6-cylinder engine in the U.S. sometime in 2013 or 2014 model year Jags.

The XF’s update includes a revised interior with new front and rear seats and a new color lighting scheme. The revised interior also receives some new tech such as a newer version of the optional 1200W Bowers & Wilkins surround system and a completely revised infotainment system.

On the outside, the 510-hp XFR receives some revised body work that includes subtle changes to the R’s bespoke sporty look as well as the incorporation of the “J-Blade” daytime LED running lights that manufacturers have seemed to rip off from Audi. Either way, the end results XFR just make it even sexier.

XF Design

A sedan with the soul of a Jaguar sports car, the Jaguar XF has won accolades and enthusiastic fans across the globe for its dynamic abilities and dramatic appearance. Advances in lighting technology have allowed the new 2012 Jaguar XF model range to adopt the Jaguar design language introduced on the flagship Jaguar XJ sedan.

Revisions to the grille, hood, and front fenders, which incorporate new triangular side vents, give the car a more muscular appearance. The Jaguar XF Supercharged hood is fitted with louvers featuring the “supercharged” script, further distinguishing the vehicle from the naturally aspirated models. The XFR also receives its own unique styling to underline its performance potential.

The XF headlamps now incorporate bi-function HID xenon technology that allows them to be much slimmer and more compact while maintaining outstanding beam resolution. The lights incorporate LED daytime running lights arranged in a distinctive Jaguar ‘J-Blade’ signature.

The tail lamps have been redesigned and now extend onto the central portion of the trunk lid. These new units are full-LED for stop, tail light and turn signal functions and give the Jaguar XF a distinctive light signature at night. Separating the tail lights is a revised trunk lid trim with a gloss black lower edge for a cleaner appearance. The trunk also features a power latch on all models.

Three new paint colors and an expanded alloy wheels selection ranging from 18″ to 20″ provide the finishing touches to the revised styling.

XF Interior

Whether experienced from the driver or passenger seat, the cabin of the XF is a welcoming and stylish place in which to spend time, using high-end materials in a contemporary manner.

Continuing to feature dramatic ‘surprise and delight’ elements such as the JaguarDrive Selector that rises from the center console and air vents that rotate to their open position when the start button is pressed, the XF interior also receives a comprehensive update.

New seats and interior displays

Revised front and rear seats incorporate a ‘hoop’ design element on the seat and backrest that improves their appearance and support. New color combinations and veneers increase the personalization options available to buyers. All models receive a revision to the color scheme on the center console, dashboard, and steering wheel where buttons and switchgear have a more luxurious soft feel black paint finish, and the ‘Tungsten’ finish is replaced by a more contemporary ‘Aurora’ theme.

The XF incorporates a formidable amount of technology, but in true Jaguar fashion, it is integrated seamlessly into the function of the car. The primary interface is a seven-inch Touch-screen with a new polarizing filter for improved contrast. Additional buttons have been added below the touch-screen to switch instantly between different functions. The graphics palette has been revised, and is based on those in the Jaguar XJ. The instrument cluster information display is now a full-color TFT unit for greater resolution and clarity.

Cutting-edge technology

Three new audio systems are offered on the XF, all of which represent a significant upgrade. Headlining is a 1200W, 17-speaker premium surround sound system from British audio experts Bowers & Wilkins, which offers extraordinary clarity and sound reproduction.

All XF models are specified with a hard-drive based satellite navigation system that incorporates a ‘virtual’ CD changer allowing the owner to transfer 10 CDs at a time into the car’s memory storage and play them as if they were a physical music medium. The system now offers multiple options for connecting portable players; two USB ports, one which can be used for iPod® devices and the other for a USB or other MP3 digital music player, and Bluetooth® connectivity that allows music to be streamed from a smartphone.

The majority of the car’s functions can also be controlled from the driver’s seat by Jaguar’s Interactive Voice functionality, which provides an intuitive interface for hands-free operation.

Jaguar has just recently confirmed that it will be building a BMW 3er competitor to rival the ‘junior executive’ model as part of its plans to expand their lineup.

Even though the XJ and  XF have brought huge success for Jaguar, global brand director Adrian Hallmark feels that the lack of a product range makes the Conventry-based subpar when compared to the likes of BMW, Audi or Mercedes-Benz.

Plans for expansion include a four-banger diesel option for the Jaguar XF in Europe, which is where BMW holds 60% of its 5er sales, as well as the aforementioned BMW 3er competitor, a petrol V6 option for the Chinese market, and an all new all-wheel-drive/4×4 drivetrain for the North American markets.

Unfortunately no details have been made about the AWD system and the BMW 3er competitor, which will essentially be an X-Type replacement.

Hallmark also mentioned the following: “I can confirm there is a project to transfer the upgrades from the XKR-S to the XFR, but we haven’t confirmed it for production yet. But it would be great to see the XF with 550hp!”

Just before the month of March wrapped up, Jaguar surprised us with ‘spy photos’ 2012 Jaguar XF fitted with a new 2.2L turbocharged 4-cylinder diesel engine. Well, a pictures showing the new 2012 Jaguar XF has now been leaked on the Internet giving us a nice view of what the sedan will look like from the front.

No word on whether the engine will be offered here in the United States.

The addition of the Stop/Start system is estimated to increase overall fuel efficiency by five to seven percent.

Jaguar said that the new powertrain will be seen in a future XF production car with specs and an estimated on-sale date to be announced at the New York Auto Show.

Jaguar has unveiled its most efficient engine yet in the form of a new 2.2-litre diesel unit.

Developing 190 PS and 332 lbs ft of torque, the new engine is capable of returning 52.3 mpg on the combined cycle while emitting 149 g/km of CO2.

Making its debut on UK roads fitted to a prototype development vehicle, the new four-cylinder 16-valve common rail diesel engine displaces 2,179 cc and is installed in a north-south configuration for the first time. The new engine features a water-cooled turbocharger with low-friction pistons, new injectors and a new crankshaft. The new configuration allowed Jaguar engineers to add a new oil pan and new electronic systems affecting the crankshaft to allow the new intelligent Stop-Start system to operate more efficiently.

Intelligent Stop-Start aims to reduce the prolonged time spent in the shutdown and start-up phase usually experienced in such systems. The Jaguar system overcomes this partly through the inclusion of the new crankshaft sensor and fuel rail pressure holding system meaning the engine needs less time to restore drive through an innovative engine restart capability. This is best demonstrated when approaching a busy roundabout – in situations where the driver briefly brings the vehicle to a stop only to move off again quickly. In conventional systems the engine needs to shutdown completely before restarting again, leading to often frustrating delays. The Jaguar system is able to restart the engine while it’s shifting down from as little as 400 rpm meaning it does not need to come to a stop – drive is therefore restored more efficiently.

The inclusion of the Stop-Start function is estimated to increase overall fuel efficiency between five and seven per cent.

Along with a new engine, the development vehicle debuts an advanced eight-speed ZF automatic gearbox. With the seventh and eight ratios effectively acting as overdrive gears, the new gearbox allows the 2.2-litre engine to be optimised to deliver swift responses when required and effortless motorway cruising ability to ensure the ideal balance between efficiency and performance. The sprint to 62 mph takes 8.5 seconds before achieving a maximum speed of 140 mph.

The high levels of refinement expected of modern Jaguars are retained with engineers putting particular emphasis on sound deadening around the engine and bulkhead as well as active engine mounts to reduce vibration. The result is a 3dB reduction in cabin noise to make the car one of the most refined vehicles in its class.

The new powertrain will feature in a future XF production car with specifications and an estimated on-sale date being announced at the New York Auto Show.
