When the Infiniti FX Sebastian Vettel Edition made its debut at the 2011 Frankfurt Motor Show in September, the Japanese automaker said that the model was just a one-off concept for Vettel himself. However, it was only a matter of time before Infiniti decided to put the high-performance into production following positive reaction at the show.

Nissan’s Executive Vice President Andy Palmer has confirmed that the Infiniti FX Sebastian Vettel Edition will go into production. The announcement was made during a video interview for the company’s blog.

“First of all, doing the Sebastian Vettel Version was fun. It was fun for Sebastian, it was fun for Shiro Nakamura and actually it’s a really interesting car,” said Palmer. “But it’s also a kind of pilot for IPL, Infiniti Performance Line. It’s about being able to do our equivalent of AMG or M-series and we wanted to test the organization and can the organization cope we’ve these type of special versions.”

Click here for our original post on the Infiniti FX Sebastian Vettel Edition.

Palmer says that the relationship between Vettel and Infiniti will go on to shape the company’s IPL division. The IPL division will compete with BMW’s M lineup and Mercedes-Benz’s AMG.

“This is one of the first versions that will go to market. Not as an IPL—it’ll obviously go as the Sebastian Vettel special version, but it demonstrates we’re able to do these low volume, very special versions and be able to charge a premium for that kind of work. Again, hopefully, with Sebastian now the world champion, the demand for his special version is going to be that much higher.”

After getting a couple of details and images prior to its 2011 Frankfurt Motor Show debut, Infiniti has finally released all the images and everything there is to know about the Infiniti FX Sebastian Vettel Edition. Apparently, the idea of the model started as a casual chat between Sebastian and Infiniti’s Chief Creative Officer, Shiro Nakamura at the 2011 Geneva Motor Show.

While the model became a global concept for Infiniti, this tricked out V8 FX50S Premium is very much Sebastian’s car.

“I drive a lot in Germany on motorways that have no speed limits and have enjoyed my FX around the Nurburgring Nordschleife,” Vettel said. “Driving at high speed where safe and legal is part of my life. As well as a higher top speed I wanted even better stability in my FX, and that meant work on the aerodynamics. It is a tribute to the excellence of the standard FX that achieving all my targets required so few changes. This is the first road car I have helped develop. Usually I have hundreds of engineers building one car just for me. So it is fantastic for me to contribute to the design of a car. The result is an Infiniti I am very proud to have my name on. It is all I hoped for: 300km/h, plenty of downforce – and I can still fit my mountain bike in the back. Plus it is totally exclusive – and as an Infiniti driver, that’s important.”

Following all the design and other modifications the 4,517 pound FX Sebastian Vettel version weighs 101 pounds less than a standard FX50S Premium. Power comes from the same 5.0 V8 in the FX50S Premium – but that has been upgraded to make an extra 32-hp for a total of 414-hp. That gives the Infiniti FX Sebastian Vettel Edition the ability to go from 0 to 62 mph in 5.6 seconds with a top speed of 186 mph.

Infiniti also added stiffer springs and re-rated dampers for better control and handling.

So, will Infiniti make a production model for its customers? Nothing has been confirmed yet but if the concept generates enough positive reaction – we don’t see why the company wouldn’t. In the meantime, let us know your thoughts by casting your vote in the poll below.

———

Press Release:

INFINITI FX SEBASTIAN VETTEL VERSION: THE CROSSOVER FIT FOR A CHAMPION

Just six months after the idea first surfaced, the Infiniti FX designed for reigning Formula One World Champion Sebastian Vettel was unveiled at the Frankfurt International Motor Show. What began as a chat between the Red Bull Racing driver and Infiniti’s Chief Creative Officer, Shiro Nakamura, at the Geneva Show in March was revealed, in concept form, as Infiniti’s fastest car yet and, probably, the most exclusive crossover ever made.

With its sophisticated technology, lightweight components and features such as Rear Active Steering for maximum agility, the V8 FX50S Premium – Infiniti’s flagship as well as its best-selling model in some markets – provides the ideal starting point for the FX Sebastian Vettel version. Changes including increased power, lower weight, derestricted top speed, longer gearing, increased downforce and lowered and stiffer suspension turn what is already a sports car among crossovers into a crossover supercar – the 300km/h reality of the World Champion’s vision.

Infiniti’s Corporate Vice President Toru Saito said: “The FX Sebastian Vettel version is unique and very much Sebastian’s car. But at the same time it is a concept car for Infiniti globally.”

Design and aerodynamics

As Sebastian says, the first priority for his ultimate FX was to give it more performance. However, whether on the racetrack or the road, speed is just one part of the mix that goes to make a world-beater. All the car’s systems, and in particular the aerodynamics, must be up to the task. In the FX Sebastian Vettel version they are.

The car’s revised aerodynamics profile is the result of changes made by Infiniti designers and engineers after meetings involving Sebastian and Red Bull Racing personnel. A Red Bull Racing RB7 was even shipped to Japan to provide real life inspiration for the team bringing the World Champion’s road car dream to life.

Riding 20mm lower than standard and featuring a more aerodynamic, as well as more distinctive, Essence-inspired grille, the most obvious change is the addition of a carbon rear wing. Tests show that it delivers everything that its looks promise – and Sebastian sought – in terms of increased downforce, and stability, at the 300km/h speeds of which the FX Sebastian Vettel version is capable.

As well as a 30 per cent improvement in the coefficient of lift (Cl), the special FX boasts a 5 per cent lower coefficient of drag (Cd). Boosting downforce while simultaneously cutting drag is one of the concept’s major claims to fame. Even the door mirror housings have been shaped to increase downforce.

Carbon is used for the splitter, sills, front grille, mirror covers and rear diffuser, trimming the weight of what is already one of the lighter SUVs in its size class. Design of the splitter and diffuser is inspired by the F1 car, as is the central rear fog light – just like an F1 car’s rain light.

The wheels are 21-inch black multispoke alloys with silver rims, designed exclusively for this car; they don’t just look the part but also save weight over the standard 21-inch FX50 wheel. At 2049kg, the FX Sebastian Vettel version weighs 46kg less than a standard FX50S Premium.

Lower and even more distinctive with new LED daytime running lights set just below the front bumper section, the concept FX exudes dynamic power. The new look enhances the sports car-like proportions and makes the flowing profile even more seductive. Dark smoke lights back and front complete the look – along with Vettel logos on both sides and at the rear.

Shiro Nakamura, Infiniti Senior Vice President and Chief Creative Officer

“We are always keen to listen to what our customers have to say about our cars, whoever they are. Equally we are always keen to show how individual our cars are, and how personalization can subtly alter their character. Making the perfect FX for Sebastian was the ideal demonstration of this.

“It was at this year’s Geneva Show that Sebastian first suggested to me that we collaborate on making his perfect FX. So we haven’t had long, but with very clear objectives we have been able to realize his ideas in a very satisfying manner.”

Mechanical changes

With an already potent 5.0-litre V8 under the bonnet, relatively little needed to be done to enable the world’s most special FX to hit Sebastian Vettel’s maximum speed target of 300km/h.

The first job was to free the car of its speed limiter which electronically restricts all other FXs to 250km/h. Even in standard form, with the VVEL V8 producing 390PS at 6500rpm, the car has plenty of performance beyond its artificial top speed, but even so more power had to be found to deliver 300km/h.

No radical engine reworking was necessary to gain the extra 30PS that takes the FX Vettel concept’s power output to 420PS. A new exhaust system liberates some of the extra horsepower while a reprogrammed engine ECU takes care of the rest, with no discernible difference to the V8’s response or efficiency. And it sounds better than ever.

In addition to the extra power is a longer final drive ratio to deliver 300km/h Autobahn speed without any detrimental effects on refinement. The longer overall gearing means the car is not as quick off the line as it could be – but at 5.6 seconds for 0-100km/h, two tenths of a second ahead of the standard car, no one is complaining. Least of all Sebastian Vettel.

Stiffer springs and re-rated dampers take the FX50’s already highly focused sports chassis into a new area of precision control for the smooth-surface, high-speed driving for which the car exists. Essentially, however, making an FX to the World Champion’s specification required no major changes. Like any FX in sporting S guise, the concept features dual-flow path (DFP) dampers with continuous damping control (CDC); the same wishbone front/multilink rear suspension, much of it constructed out of aluminium; opposed 4-piston (front), 2-piston (rear) calipers for the 355/350mm brake discs; and vehicle-speed variable rack and pinion steering.

Rear Active Steering, an important ingredient in any FX S’s blend of agility with stability, plays a key role in ensuring handling fulfils the World Champion’s requirements for a road car.

Interior

The bespoke carbon fibre exterior detailing is echoed in the FX’s cabin by tailored panels of black carbon – real, not appliqué – on the doors and centre console. Highlights that would normally be silver chrome are treated to a special black chrome finish, while in true F1 style, Alcantara is used on the steering wheel and gearshift paddles. Special seats, with extra support, are covered in black quilted suede cloth finished with purple stitching and special “SV” logos. The material also features on the pillars, roof lining and sun visors.

A metal plate on the centre console featuring the World Champion’s signature provides the unique finishing touch.

The luxury fittings, comprehensive features including Connectiviti+, one of the car world’s most complete and easily understood infotainment systems, and the FX’s award-winning range of safety technologies are all included. As standard of course. Infiniti believes that no one should be forced to pay for expensive extras.

Not even World Champions.

The first-ever Vettel-badged road car will debut in concept form and is the lightest, fastest and most aerodynamic FX ever made. The Infiniti FX Sebastian Vettel Edition is capable of hitting a top speed of 186 mph, which is perfect for Vettel as he drives on his home country’s derestricted Autobahn.

Based on the V8 Infiniti FX50S Premium, the Infiniti FX Sebastian Vettel gets some changes to the engine, suspension and body, with some aerodynamic enhancements implemented with input from Red Bull Racing. The one-off model also gains an interior catering to Sebastian Vettel’s taste.

We’re not sure if the Vettel inspired model will be available to customers, but for now it’s a one-off concept that Infiniti will hand over to Vettel.

There has been some debate over what vehicle Infiniti would be working with Sebastian Vettel on for a special edition.

It appears that the latest speculations were correct, as Infiniti has released a preview of the Vettel inspired FX before its Frankfurt Motor Show debut.

The Infiniti FX50 crossover already comes with 390-hp and hits 0-60 in 5 seconds, and it has now been placed in the hands of the Formula One World Champion. No specs have been released yet, but Vettel will be debuting his project himself on September 13th at Frankfurt.

Infiniti is expected to release a new model at the Frankfurt motor show next month and although the brand is remaining quiet about what it is, its been speculated to be a limited edition FX50, worked by F1 world champion Sebastian Vettel.

Red Bull Racing is Vettel’s team, and they have a partnership with Infiniti, with Vettel as a global ambassador for the brand. He has made several appearances at PR and press events, and was given an FX50 for a daily driver of his own.

He may have been planning the model’s appearance with Shiro Nakamura, Infiniti’s senior VP, as they were seen at the Geneva motor show this past spring. So far, possibilities include a grey color scheme and carbon fiber details, and an F1-inspired steering wheel, that has additional controls and buttons on it.

Vettel was quoted earlier in the year saying “Since our first contact with Infiniti I liked their cars. A car can impress you in two ways: its looks and its handling. After I had the chance to test some cars in the range I became a big fan. They are comfortable as well as sport when you ask for it.”

Red Bull Racing’s involvement in the project is still unclear, but it is more likely that we will see something beyond an F1 project.

Infiniti has just released pictures and details of the new 2012 Infiniti FX, which will hit United States dealerships in October. 2011. Infiniti says that it has facelifted the new FX with a heavy influence from the stunning Infiniti Essence Concept. While we wouldn’t go that far as to say it resembles the Essence, the new 2012 FX does enhance its head-on appeal with a new grille (thank god that tongue looking grille is gone), new headlamps, new fog lights and a couple of creases that weren’t there before.

New for 2012 is the addition of the new ‘Limited Edition’ for the FX35 AWD. The Limited Edition includes an extensive list of special features, starting with an exclusive Iridium Blue exterior color, 21-inch 10-spoke dark finish aluminum-alloy turbine wheels, Infiniti Hard Drive Navigation System, and Around View Monitor.

Other 2012 Infiniti FX enhancements include a new exterior color, Graphite Shadow (replaces Platinum Graphite), new 20-inch wheel design for the FX35 Deluxe Touring Package, the addition of Adaptive Front lighting System to the FX50 Sport Package, and a shift of the quilted leather climate-controlled front seats to the FX35 Deluxe Touring Package from the Premium Package.

Power for the 2012 Infiniti FX35 still comes from the 3.5 liter V6 making 303-hp and 262 lb-ft of torque. The 2012 Infiniti FX50 goes on with its wonderful 5.0 liter V8 making 390-hp and 369 lb-ft of torque.

We never really thought any tuner out there would customize an Infiniti model since there’s not really much to mess with. However, Bulgarian designer studio VILNER, rolled up its sleeves and decided to upgrade the interior on the Infiniti EX and FX.

Vilner said that the customizations should attract yacht owners, since it strongly resembles this kind of vessels.

The Infiniti FX by Vilner has received a more complete appearance and the ceiling, front panel and upper part of the panels are dressed in Nappa leather, and the plastic decorations on the seats – in Alcantara.

“A ‘radical expression of sport and utility,’ the FX offers exceptional levels of performance, refinement and driving exhilaration,”: that is how Infiniti describes its 2010 FX SUV/Crossover. The expression may be a bit misinterpreted however, with regard to utility; that is one area where the vehicle falls blatantly short. The FX isn”t the only vehicle in its class with this shortcoming; the BMW X6 also offers less utility but puts more emphasis on performance, sportiness, and aggressive styling.

Having first hit the scene for the “03 model year, the FX had a long-running first generation; it was redesigned and reengineered for the first time in 2009. We were given the opportunity to examine the new product up close when the folks at Infiniti dropped it off the all-new 2010 Infiniti FX 50S at our garage, and we must say, we were really impressed with the overall drive quality, performance, and convenient interior features.

Exterior:

It definitely turns heads… depending on how you look it.

Infiniti says that the 2010 FX is a head turner. While this may be true, that is only a good thing if heads are being turned toward the vehicle. While the FX isn”t an atrocity to look at, the styling of the vehicle can come off as a bit aggressive when compared to that of the competition. The long hood, stretched wheelbase, short front and rear overhangs, and low center of gravity indicate to us that when they got in the lab to redesign the vehicle, they focused heavily on proportioning the car in a very sporty manner. Contributing even more to the sportiness of the vehicle is the body design”s distinctive, functioning side air vents which are located behind the front wheels and allow air to flow through the engine compartment and out of the side of the vehicle, reducing front end lift.

When viewed from the rear, the second generation differs very little from the first. The front of the vehicle however, is a different story with its new, much more dramatic “˜wave” style grille, which we think is a little too aggressive. Rounding out the aggressiveness of the vehicle are Infiniti”s signature fog lamps, High Intensity Discharge (HID) bi-functional projector headlights, and a strong front-to-rear shoulder line. The large LED taillights are an interesting touch however, as they extend beyond the body helping to create aerodynamic downforce.

While the body design of the 2010 FX is certainly not without merit, we feel that it is overly dramatic when compared to that of the competition.

Interior:

An inside that is welcoming with numerous advanced technology features and solid quality.

The interior of the FX has been totally redesigned to include an emphasis on sportiness while being oriented around the driver. All 2010 FX models come standard with a pretty solid set of options that includes; Infiniti Intelligent Key with push button start, Bluetooth connectivity, leather-appointed seats, 60/40 split rear bench seating that reclines as well as folds down, power windows with front and rear one touch functionality, and an advanced Bose audio system that carries with it 11-speakers, AM/FM/CD player, and a 2GB Music Box Hard Drive with USB connectivity for AV playback and iPod user interface. An XM Satellite Radio (subscription sold separately) is also included as standard equipment with a diversity antenna and steering-wheel mounted audio controls.

All FX 50 models include all of the above amenities while adding the convenience of Infiniti”s Hard Drive (HDD) Navigation system, which features XM NavTraffic real-time traffic information, XM NavWeather real-time weather information, Zagat Restaurant Guide, and Bluetooth Streaming Audio. The standard 2GB Music Box system is upgraded to 9.3GB and Voice Recognition for the navigation and audio systems also come standard on all FX 50 models.

There are also a plethora of optional features that add to the driving experience, and that are included in various trim packages. They include: Advanced Climate Control System (ACCS) with Plasmacluster ionizer which reduces interior airborne contaminants by way of a “˜Clean Mode” which uses ionization to reduce unwanted airborne particles, Infiniti Lane Departure Prevention (LDP) adaptive cruise control, Around View Monitor system which provides a birds-eye view of the vehicles surroundings, sport-style front seats, solid magnesium paddle shifters, dark-tinted headlight bezels, Continuous Damping Control and Rear Active Steer, Lane Departure Warning and Lane Departure Prevention, Intelligent Cruise Control (Full Speed Range), Distance Control Assist, Intelligent Brake Assist, Front Pre-Crash Seat Belts, rain-sensing wipers and Adaptive Front lighting System (AFS) headlights with auto-leveling.

In terms of functionality as an SUV, the FX falls a bit short with its mere 24.8 cubic feet of cargo space with the rear seats up, and 62.0 cubic feet with the seats down. This isn”t detrimental however, as shoppers of this sub-segment are often in search of performance more than a significant utility.

Performance:

The Infiniti FX offers sports car performance and crossover like comfort.

The entry-level 2010 Infiniti FX 35 pulls its power from a 303-hp V6 engine. The FX 50S that we tested however, derives power from 5.0L V8 that puts out 390-hp and 369 lb-ft of torque. Mated to a 7-speed electronically controlled automatic overdrive transmission with manual shift mode and adaptive shift control, the FX 50 attains 60 mph in 5.5 seconds and reaches a top speed of 145 mph. In terms of drive quality, the FX 50 is delivers a very pleasurable ride; great for the intensely spirited driver or leisurely Sunday driver.

All FX models offer independent suspension at all four corners, with a double-wishbone suspension design up front, and a multi-link design in the rear. Large diameter stabilizer bars are utilized at both ends, and the system also incorporates special Dual Flow Path shock absorber technology with rebound springs, all of which combine to deliver an extremely comfortable ride and superbly firm handling.

Both the FX35 and FX50 are available with Infiniti”s advanced ATTESA E-TS™ (Advanced Total Traction Engineering System for All Electronic Torque Split) all-wheel drive system, which uses an advanced torque split control strategy that automatically redistributes torque to the wheels according to road and driving conditions.

When compared to the German competition in terms of performance, the FX holds its own, delivering the zip, power, smooth acceleration, tight handling, and firm ride that we have come to love from the likes of the Germans.

Overall:

The Infiniti FX is one of the best in its segment with one of the most attractive price tags in the segment.

Drive quality, luxury, and standard and optional equipment all considered, the FX represents a great buy. Pricing starts at $42,850 for the entry-level 303-hp V6 FX35, with the all-wheel drive option bringing the MSRP to $44,300. The FX50 demands a heftier price, starting at $59,000 and coming standardly equipped with all-wheel-drive. This is still a bargain when you consider that the FX”s closest competitor, the BMW X6 xDrive50i starts at $67,200. Anyone in the market that is willing to sacrifice utility for a sport ride owes it to themselves test-drive both models.

If you are more price-conscious however, the FX is certainly the vehicle for you considering the plush amenities and sporty 390-hp engine for about $8,000 less than the sticker on the X6 xDrive50i.

It is offered with a choice of a 390-horsepower 5.0-liter 32-valve DOHC V8 (FX50) or with a 303-horsepower 3.5-liter 24-valve DOHC V6 (FX35), along with available Intelligent All-Wheel Drive (standard on FX50).

The Manufacturer”s Suggested Retail Prices (MSRP)* for the three available 2010 Infiniti FX models are:

FX35 RWD $42,400
FX35 AWD $43,850
FX50 AWD $58,400

For 2010, changes to FX include standard Bluetooth® Hands-free Phone System on all models, the addition of a standard USB Connection Port for iPod® and other compatible devices, the addition of a 2.0GB Music Box® hard drive to the Bose® Premium Audio system (on vehicles without navigation) and simplified exterior/interior color combinations. FX”s available Infiniti Hard Drive Navigation System has been enhanced for 2010 with the addition of an in-dash single disc DVD audio/video drive, streaming audio via Bluetooth®, Zagat® Restaurant Guide and XM NavWeather® (along with the previously available XM NavTraffic®).

Under the dramatically styled FX exterior, all models are equipped with a standard 7-speed automatic transmission, double-wishbone front/multi-link rear suspension and large 4-wheel disc brakes. FX also offers available Continuous Damping Control (CDC)®, Rear Active Steer, Intelligent Brake Assist (IBA) and 21-inch super lightweight aluminum-alloy wheels designed by Enkei. Solid magnesium paddle shifters are available on the FX50 in the Sport Package.

Inside, the FX interior provides a warm, inviting environment highlighted by a driver-oriented cockpit with intuitive controls, available sport seating and advanced audio, navigation and technology ranging from an 11-speaker Bose®-developed audio system to Infiniti Intelligent Key, available Intelligent Cruise Control (Full-Speed Range) and available Around View™ Monitor system.

Available FX driving aids include Distance Control Assist (DCA), which helps reduce the burden of driving in heavy traffic by intuitively prompting the driver to release the throttle and apply the brakes to maintain distance to the vehicle ahead; Lane Departure Warning (LDW) and Lane Departure Prevention (LDP) systems, which helps the driver respond to an unintended lane departure; and Intelligent Brake Assist (IBA) with Forward Collision Warning (FCW), which helps alert the driver that a collision may be imminent and provides automatic braking to help reduce the risk of injury if a collision is unavoidable.

In the U.S. the 2009 Infiniti FX comes in two different versions – the FX35 and the 390-hp FX50. The 2009 Infiniti FX35 is powered by a 303-hp 3.5L V6 engine. That’s quite a gap between entry level and the range-topper. Well, next month at the Paris Motor Show Infiniti will reveal the FX37, which will be only sold in Europe.

Europeans will get to enjoy the 320-hp Infiniti FX37 as their entry level model which will be available in FX37 GT and FX37S versions. Both do 0 to 62 mph in 6.8 seconds. The FX 37 GT comes standard with 20-inch alloy wheels, electric and heated/ventilated front seats, adaptive xenons, parking camera sensors, all-wheel-drive and a 7-speed automatic with paddle shifting. The FX37S gets 21 inch alloys, Continuous Damping Control and sports seats. Yes, some of those luxury items are optional on the stateside.

Pricing for the 2009 Infiniti FX37 starts at €55,950 ($79,437 USD). Being the first country where Infiniti sold cars – we feel pretty ripped off.
