In order to create a larger gap between the Hyundai brand and the premium vehicles it produces, the automaker is considering making a sub-brand under the Genesis label for the U.S.

Badges would be swapped on rear-wheel drive models including the Genesis sedan and coupe, and the Equus, and would trade in their current model names for an alphanumeric system. Although it would be a separate brand, Hyundai says the premium models would still be sold at its dealerships, and that a fully separate luxury brand is not at all an option.

“There’s a conversation going on within the company that says, ‘Does having the Hyundai badge on the premium vehicles sell more vehicles, or does it restrict us from selling more vehicles?’” said Dave Zuchowski, executive vice president of sales for Hyundai Motor America.

Sales numbers for Hyundai’s premium models certainly make the debate worthwhile, with 3,193 Equus models sold in its first full year released, well over the 2,300 the automaker anticipated. As for the Genesis Sedan and Coupe, sales for these models were up 13 in 2011 from 2010, putting 2011 total at 32,998.

With redesigns coming up for all of the premium models in 2013, Hyundai would have its best opportunity to make that move with the launch of the new generation.

Today at the Detroit Auto Show, Hyundai offered a redesigned, more punchy Genesis with the following powertrain upgrades: a new turbo for the direct injection two liter four (274 bhp/275ft-lbs) and direct injection for the 3.8 liter V6 (348bhp/295ft-lbs). The V6 gains 42bhp/29 ft-lbs and the four is up 30% on power. Handling-wise, the rear-drive coupe gets new low-velocity shocks.

Not that it is a priority with a sports car, but mileage picks up too; the V6 improves over both transmissions with 18 mpg city/28 highway for the auto, and one less on the highway for the manual. The four only picks up economy with the auto’ box at 20/31 and 21/30 for the manual.

Inside paddle shifters are just one of the changes. The six speed manual is still available in both cars, but now an 8-speed auto ‘box can be shifted via panels. Both the 2.0T and the 3.8 now have telescoping steering wheels and revised center stacks. As part of this interior revision comes the option of Hyundai’s BlueLink infotainment system.

Just two more things: this is a car where you can shut the stability control totally off, and with the four cylinder, the penalty for running regular gas instead of premium is only 14 bhp.

I can’t say that I haven’t seen this type of activity in other parts of the world, but it’s usually those that don’t have a luxury sedan.

Now, while you may not consider the Hyundai Genesis a luxury sedan, we do. However, we’re pretty sure that the trunk of the Hyundai Genesis isn’t luxurious enough to throw some kids in if you run out of room inside the car.

In South Korea though… it’s apparently a viable option.

Chrysler has made a huge comeback post-bailout and their latest products speak for themselves. In fact, they’ve made such a huge improvement that Consumer Reports scored the Chrysler 300 C as “Excellent” in an overall road and called it “the best Chrysler sedan we’ve seen in decades.”

Scoring 80 in CR’s latest test of four upscale sedans, in comparison the previous generation scored only a 64.

“The 300C’s quick, muscular 5.7-liter V8 engine is now complemented by responsive handling and a more comfortable ride,” said David Champion, senior director of Consumer Reports’ Auto Test Center in East Haddam, CT. “And, thanks to a major upgrade, its roomy interior is now quieter, more luxurious, and has improved visibility.”

The other competitors in the test were the Hyundai Genesis, the Toyota Avalon and the Acura TL. Still leading the comparison was the Hyundai Genesis and after receiving a mid-cycle refresh, the Genesis received an “Excellent” rating of 92.

Hyundai has just confirmed that the next generation Hyundai Genesis will receive an option for all-wheel drive, after seeing that nearly half of BMW sedans in the US are ordered with AWD.

“We do have a plan to fix that (the current lack of an AWD option for the Genesis sedan) with the next major model change,” said Hyundai’s CEO, John Krafcik.

Click here for more news on the Hyundai Genesis.

Additionally, since the new 5.0L V8-powered R-Spec model has just been released, a source within Hyundai said that the offering of two distinct V8s—the standard 4.6L and the top-end 5.0L—is an “unusual practice.” Hyundai has an initiative to simplify the number of buildable configurations, mostly to keep customers from getting confused, something that we’ve seen with other cars such as Volkswagen and Chevrolet.

It is unconfirmed, but the source said that the next generation’s Genesis may consolidate its V8 options by offering only a 5.0L Tau V8, but one that is detuned for the base V8 model and one that is the normal 5.0L Tau V8 found in the current Genesis R-Spec.

Here is some surprising information for those of you that think that Hyundai is still that same old cheap Korean brand. According to Hyundai U.S. Chief John Krafcik, about 6% of American Express Centurion Card Holders – you know, those that are astonishingly rich enough to get the ‘Black Card’ with an unlimited credit line – own a Hyundai model.

That’s the same percentage of Black Card holders that own a Bentley and Audi. 22 percent of Black Card holders own a BMW, 21 percent own a Mercedes, 15 percent own a Porsche, 11 percent own a Lexus, 8 percent own a Ferrari and 7 percent own a Acura.

“I know you all can’t believe this,” Krafcik said at a presentation in Ann Arbor today. He also admitted to not ever being offered a Centurion Card invitation.

The average AmEx Black Card holder has $16.3 million in assets and an annual household income of $1.3 million.

Following the debut of the new 2012 Hyundai Genesis sedan, the Korean automaker plans to debut the 2012 Hyundai Genesis Coupe at the 2012 Detroit Auto Show in January. While that is a long way off, reports suggest that the wait will be worth it as the 2012 Genesis Coupe will have an updated exterior and increased output for both its powertrain choices.

Click here for more news on the Hyundai Genesis Coupe.

Right now, the rear-wheel-drive 2011 Hyundai Genesis Coupe is available with either a 210-hp 2.0L turbo 4-cylinder or a 306-hp 3.8L V6. Hyundai offers a 6-speed manual transmission, a 5-speed automatic or a 6-speed automatic.

The 2012 Hyundai Genesis Coupe is expected to get the V6 upgrade found in the sedan, giving it a nice 333-hp with a maximum torque of 291 lb-ft. We’re pretty excited to see how it performs.

The 2012 Genesis is highlighted by exterior design improvements, new direct injection technology for its Lambda V6 engine, new eight-speed automatic transmission, and enhanced chassis tuning. In addition, a new 5.0-liter direct injection V8 engine is now available exclusively with the 5.0 R-Spec model, which includes unique 19-inch machined-finish alloy wheels, optional Bridgestone Potenza S-04 Pole Position summer performance tires, and sport-tuned transmission, suspension and steering calibrations for exhilarating vehicle dynamics.

While these powertrain upgrades are meaner, the Genesis is also greener in an era of uncertain gas prices. For example, the heart of the Genesis 5.0 R-Spec model is a new Tau V8 engine, producing 429 horsepower at 6,400 rpm and 376 lb. ft. of torque at 5,000 rpm. This new Tau V8 represents the most powerful Hyundai engine ever, with a higher specific output (85.8 hp/liter) than its normally-aspirated premium luxury competitors. Even with this impressive power increase, fuel economy is estimated at 16 mpg city and 25 mpg highway, nearly matching the 4.6-liter V8 (17 mpg city/26 mpg highway). In keeping with its 5.0-liter V8 sibling, the Genesis 3.8-liter Lambda engine will receive direct injection (GDI) technology, boosting its output 15 percent from 290 to 333 horsepower, an impressive gain of 43 horsepower with no increase in displacement. In addition, peak torque rises from 264 lb.-ft. to 291 lb.-ft., a generous increase of 27 lb.-ft. from the same 3.8 liters. This new direct-injected Lambda V6 produces a higher specific output (87.6 hp/liter) than its normally-aspirated mid-luxury competitors, while 3.8-liter GDI fuel economy increases more than seven percent from 27 mpg to 29 mpg on the highway.

CHASSIS REFINEMENT FOR 3.8 AND 4.6 MODELS

Always seeking to enhance the Genesis driving experience, Hyundai engineers have made further refinements to the 3.8 and 4.6 model suspension damping calibrations. These precise adjustments serve to minimize the traditional compromises between handling precision and ride comfort. In addition, body roll control for the 3.8 model is enhanced, with the rear stabilizer bar diameter increasing from 17 mm to 18 mm.

EXTERIOR DESIGN

Not content to rest on its laurels, Hyundai’s design team has sought to make a great Genesis exterior design even better for 2012. For the front view, the grille has been enhanced, a more aggressive front fascia with larger intake openings was developed, and the headlights have been redesigned, adding LED accents and daytime running lights (DRLs). From the side view, the standard 17-inch alloy wheel design has been freshened and the rocker panels have been refined. In addition, the mirrors now incorporate optional puddle lamps, while the side window surround now receives a decidedly sporty brushed aluminum finish. From the rear view, the taillights have been redesigned and new dual asymmetrical exhaust tips are more cleanly integrated with a new bumper fascia.

NEW SAFETY TECHNOLOGIES

For 2012, Genesis adds daytime running lamps to all models. Further, Genesis offers a newly developed Lane Departure Warning System (LDWS), available on the 3.8 Technology package, 4.6 and 5.0 R-Spec models. Braking is also improved on both the 3.8 and 4.6 models. The 3.8 model front rotor size increases from 12.6 inches to 13.0 inches, while adding higher performance 4-piston brake calipers, and the 4.6 model front brake rotors increase from 13.0 inches to 13.6 inches for greater fade resistance.

NEW TECHNOLOGY AND FEATURES

Genesis 3.8 Standard Equipment

Ever since the Hyundai Genesis made its debut in 2008, the model has long become known as the brand’s ultimate luxury sedan (besides the Hyundai Equus). To keep the luxury feel around the Genesis, Hyundai today unveiled the Genesis Prada in its hometown of Seoul, Korea. Based on the 2012 Hyundai Genesis featuring the Tau 5.0L GDi engine, the Genesis Prada gets some luxury upgrades that are a result of two years of hard work.

The Hyundai Genesis Prada is available in three exterior colors including Black Nero, Blue Baltico and Brown Moro. It also features a dark chrome grille, emblem and door handles that resemble the palladium-coated buckles on Prada’s bags. The Genesis Prada rides on 19-inch alloy wheels.

Click here for more news on the Hyundai Genesis.

On the inside, the Hyundai Genesis Prada gets a revised upholstery in artisan-crafted “saffiano” leather – Prada’s signature top quality leather.

Hyundai said it will produce the Genesis Prada by custom orders. Only 1,200 units will be made for the Korean market, with other markets also getting a limited production run in Middle Eastern and Asian countries.

Press Release:

Hyundai Begins Sales of `Genesis Prada’

Hyundai unveils production model of `Genesis Prada’ in Seoul

Hyundai’s award-winning Genesis sedan reborn with innovative input from Prada, one of the world’s leading luxury brands

Hyundai to limit sales to 1,200 units in Korea, will export small number to other countries

(Seoul, Korea) Hyundai Motor Company, one of the world’s fastest-growing major automakers, today began sales of the limited edition Genesis Prada in Korea amid industry-wide attention surrounding the collaboration between a leading carmaker and Prada, one of the world’s leading brands in the luxury goods industry.

The Genesis Prada, based on the 2012 Genesis sedan and featuring Hyundai’s award-winning Tau 5.0 GDi engine, was unveiled today at a media event in downtown Seoul. Over 100 VIPs, company executives and media members attended the event, which was held at an art gallery in downtown Seoul.

Genesis Prada is characterized by a special design that combines Prada’s sophisticated innovation, attention to detail and uncompromised quality approach with Hyundai’s advanced technology and expertise in car manufacturing. Hyundai and Prada worked together for over two years to perfect the model, after unveiling a special edition at the 2009 Seoul Motor Show. This is the first time a production model is being introduced to the market.

The joint project of Genesis Prada is the result of both companies’ approach to create a highly unique version of the Genesis model, addressed to the most sophisticated clientele. In particular, the project reflects Hyundai’s new marketing direction, “New Thinking. New Possibilities.”, which aims to provide customers with new experiences and values beyond their expectations. This matches the brand image of Prada, which also balances tradition and innovation.

Genesis Prada

Genesis Prada is based on the 2012 Genesis, which was launched in February this year. The car, which won the prestigious 2009 North American Car of the Year award, is powered by Hyundai’s Tau V8 engine, which has been chosen as one of Ward’s 10 Best Engines for three consecutive years since 2009. The 2012 Genesis’s Tau 5.0 GDi engine delivers a peak power of 430ps and a maximum torque of 52.0kgm, mated with an eight-speed automatic transmission that allows drivers to enjoy the cars power and driving dynamics to their fullest extent.

Genesis Prada comes in three special colors – Black Nero, Blue Baltico and Brown Moro – that are applied with a three-layer coat technology with stereoscopic gold pearl. Dark chrome is applied to the radiator grille, emblem and door handles to reflect the unique palladium-coated buckles on Prada’s bags. The innovations introduced by Prada include also 19-inch alloy wheels and an outer antenna with a wedge shape.

For the interior, the dashboard and the upholstery have also been revised and artisan-crafted in “saffiano” leather – Prada’s signature top quality leather – to obtain a luxurious and sophisticated finish.

Genesis Prada will be produced by customized personal orders, while the limited Genesis Prada badge and GP500 emblem will emphasize the scarcity of the car. Hyundai, together with Prada, will carry out exclusive VIP marketing activities to provide customers with ultimate satisfaction and convenience.

Hyundai plans to offer a limited number of 1,200 units in the Korean market, later exporting to a limited number of Middle Eastern and Asian countries, including China.

For the 2012 model year, the Hyundai Genesis received a bunch of nice upgrades including a new Tau 5.0L V8 engine making 429 horsepower and 376 lb-ft of torque. Now all we need from Hyundai’s luxury car is all-wheel-drive? Well, we won’t get it… at least not until the second-generation of the car, which is due for the 2014 model year.

Click here for more news on the Hyundai Genesis.

The Hyundai Genesis model has done wonder for the Korean automaker, helping in stealing customers from competing brands as well as non-competing luxury brands like BMW 5-Series owners. All-wheel-drive should allow for a bigger boost in convincing Snow Belt state drivers to get behind the Hyundai Genesis.

Hyundai’s CEO John Krafcik has previously hinted that the Genesis coupe and the Equus will also offer all-wheel-drive in their next-generation models.

This is something we wish was an April Fools joke but it’s not. Hyundai has decided against spinning off the Genesis or Equus nameplates to create an independent premium brand due to the cost involved and possible damage it may bring to sibling nameplates.

Hyundai original considered spinning off the Genesis or Equus nameplate into premium brands that would compete with the likes of Lexus or Infiniti.

“There are no plans for Hyundai to make a separate brand,” Vice Chairman Shin Jong-Woon said.

According to spokesman Frank Ahrens, Hyundai’s executives are worried it would cost too much and undermine the image of other models at a time when Hyundai is trying to position the entire lineup as ‘modern premium.

The 5.0-liter cylinder bore was increased from 92 mm to 96 mm over the 4.6-liter bore for a total displacement of 5.0 liters (5,038cc). In addition to the enlarged displacement, direct injection technology has been added. This high-pressure direct injection system (over 2200 psi), dramatically increases power and torque while reducing fuel consumption and emissions. Compression ratio has been increased from 10.4 to 11.5:1 for greater thermal efficiency and output. The Tau also receives a revised bed plate for improved block rigidity and lower NVH as well as camshaft carriers and a roller timing chain to improve valvetrain stability.

Even more, this new V8 still offers all of the premium engine technology from the 4.6-liter V8, including Dual Continuously Variable Valve Timing (D-CVVT), a tuned variable induction system, and low-friction diamond-like coatings (DLC) on piston skirts, rings and tappets. Even with these impressive power increases, fuel economy is estimated at 16 mpg city and 25 mpg highway, nearly matching the 4.6-liter V8 (17 mpg city/26 mpg highway). As an additional point of interest, this same 5.0-liter Tau V8 with eight-speed transmission will replace the current 4.6-liter V8 as the standard powertrain in the 2012 Hyundai Equus premium luxury sedan, on sale this summer.

The Tau 5.0-liter V8 is coupled with a new in-house eight-speed transmission. This new Hyundai-developed transmission adds two additional ratios to enhance acceleration, shifting smoothness, and transmission efficiency by six percent over the former six-speed. All eight-speed transmissions will include SHIFTRONIC® manual shift capability. This new eight-speed transmission is the first offered by a non-luxury branded manufacturer.

In keeping with Hyundai engineering philosophy, the R-Spec also will include more aggressive chassis tuning, matching its corresponding powertrain enhancements for optimal dynamic balance. For enhanced body roll control, front stabilizer bar diameter has been increased from 25 mm to 26 mm, and rear diameter from 18 mm to 19 mm over the 4.6 model. R-Spec will offer a unique sport design 19-inch alloy wheel with premium machined finish and optional Michelin Pilot Sport PS2 summer performance tires. The R-Spec steering calibration has been matched to this unique wheel and tire combination for optimized performance and driving refinement expectations in this segment. To complete the performance package, front brake rotors have increased from 13.0 inches to 13.6 inches over the 2011 4.6 model.

In addition to the more aggressive styling cues for all 2012 Genesis models, R-Spec will offer unique headlights with dark chrome inserts for a more distinctive front appearance. An R-Spec trim designation badge has been added to the rear deck, and black R-Spec embroidered floor mats daily remind the driver of the performance that awaits behind the wheel. Genesis R-Spec only will be offered in three sport-oriented exterior colors: Black Noir, Titanium Gray, and Platinum Metallic, each with Black leather interior and an all-black leather steering wheel for a differentiated sport appearance from the 4.6 model.

DIRECT INJECTION LAMBDA 3.8-LITER ENGINE

In keeping with its 5.0-liter V8 sibling, the Genesis 3.8-liter Lambda engine will receive direct injection (GDI) technology, boosting its output 15 percent from 290 to 333 horsepower, an impressive gain of 43 horsepower with no increase in displacement. In addition, peak torque rises from 264 lb.-ft. to 291 lb.-ft., a generous increase of 27 lb.-ft. from the same 3.8 liters. Compression ratio increases from 10.4:1 to 11.5:1 for greater thermal efficiency. This new direct-injected Lambda V6 produces a higher specific output (87.6 hp/liter) than its normally-aspirated premium luxury competitors.

The 3.8-liter engine retains all of the premium technologies that have made it outstanding since the launch of Genesis: Dual Continuously Variable Valve Timing (D-CVVT), variable induction, all aluminum block and heads, steel timing chain, and iridium-tipped spark plugs. Besides the generous horsepower and torque gains, direct injection technology produces a significant reduction in emissions through a 40 percent reduction in catalyst light-off time. Further, a variable vane oil pump has been fitted to precisely match oil pressure with engine lubrication requirements for increased efficiency at all engine speeds. As a result, 3.8-liter GDI fuel economy increases over seven percent from 27 mpg to 29 mpg on the highway.

All 3.8-liter engines will be coupled to an in-house-developed eight-speed transmission with SHIFTRONIC and precisely calibrated gear ratios for an overall transmission efficiency gain of six percent. These two additional ratios serve to achieve competing objectives of acceleration and economy without compromise.

AWARD-WINNING TAU 4.6-LITER V8 ENGINE WITH EIGHT-SPEED AUTOMATIC
For 2012, Genesis’ award-winning Tau 4.6-liter V8 powerplant will now be coupled exclusively with an in-house-developed eight-speed automatic transmission with SHIFTRONIC, adding benefits in acceleration and efficiency. Internal engineering tests estimate this new eight-speed transmission to be six percent more efficient at transferring power than the former 6-speed automatic, increasing highway fuel economy from 25 mpg to 26 mpg.

This same 4.6-liter Tau V8 engine was already significantly improved for 2010 with induction and tuning enhancements increasing peak output from 375 to 385 horsepower. A variable intake system, iridium-tipped spark plugs, anti-knock control, and multi-port injection further add to the sophistication of this engine.

Braking is also improved on both the 3.8 and 4.6 models; the 3.8 model front rotor size increases from 12.6 inches to 13.0 inches, while adding by higher performance 4-piston brake calipers, and the 4.6 model front brake rotors increase from 13.0 inches to 13.6 inches for greater fade resistance.

EXTERIOR DESIGN

Not content to rest on their laurels, Hyundai’s design team has sought to make a great Genesis exterior design even better for 2012. For the front view, the front grille has been enhanced, a more aggressive front fascia with larger intake openings was developed, and the headlights have been redesigned, adding LED accents and daytime running lights (DRLs). From the side view, the standard 17-inch alloy wheel design has been freshened and the rocker panels have been refined. In addition, the mirrors now incorporate power-folding and puddle lamp functions, while the side window surround now receives a decidedly sporty brushed aluminum finish. From the rear view, the taillights have been redesigned and new dual asymmetrical exhaust tips are more cleanly integrated with a new bumper fascia.

NEW SAFETY TECHNOLOGIES
Maintaining Hyundai’s emphasis on delivering leading safety technology, Genesis boasts world-class active and passive safety features to help both prevent accidents and maximize the well being of its occupants in the event of a collision. Genesis continues the Hyundai tradition of standardizing key life-saving safety technology with Electronic Stability Control (ESC), eight airbags and electronic active head restraints. Active front head restraints have been proven by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety to help prevent whiplash.

Adding to this safety leadership for 2012, Genesis adds new daytime running lamps to all models. Further, Genesis offers a newly-developed Lane Departure Warning System (LDWS), available on the 3.8 Technology package, 4.6 and 5.0 R-Spec models.

Genesis’ total of eight airbags includes advanced dual front airbags, front and rear seat-mounted side-impact airbags, and roof-mounted side curtain airbags for both front and rear outboard seat occupants.

Genesis has a total of eight ultrasonic sensors located on the front and rear bumpers. The sensors, along with the rear backup camera, help detect how close objects are when parking. Distance is indicated on the in-dash screen and accompanied by an audible warning tone.

Genesis is brought to a halt by large four-wheel anti-lock disc brakes with Brake Assist and Electronic Brake Distribution (EBD). Genesis 3.8 models now have large 13.0-inch front rotors with four-piston fixed calipers, while 4.6 and 5.0 models have oversized 13.6-inch front rotors.

NEW TECHNOLOGY AND FEATURES

Genesis 3.8 Standard Equipment
2012 Genesis also will increase its impressive list of standard equipment, adding headlight LED accents and daytime running lights (DRLs) and outside mirror puddle lamps.

Genesis 3.8 Premium Package
The 3.8 Premium Package will now offer newly-developed power-folding outside mirrors and heated rear seats with console controls. For 2012, the 3.8 Premium package will also include rearview camera, DVD navigation system with seven-inch touchscreen, XM NavTraffic, and 18-inch Hyper Silver split-spoke alloy wheels.

Genesis 3.8 Technology Package
The 3.8 Technology package will continue to satisfy tech-savvy buyers, adding a newly-developed Lane Departure Warning System (LDWS), and thin-film-transistor LCD gauge cluster readout.

2011 Hyundai Equus

When our friends come up to us asking what affordable mid-size sedan car we would recommend them, the first car that pops into our mind is the 2011 Hyundai Sonata. The new Sonata has become a viable competitor to the Honda Accord and Toyota Camry and seems to offer better looks and more bang for your buck. The same can be said for the new 2011 Hyundai Elantra.

Of course, much of Hyundai’s image improvement is credited to the Genesis and Genesis Coupe – but the firm is now confident enough to offer the world a $50,000+ large luxury sedan – the Hyundai Equus.

Recently, one of my friends went and test drove a Sonata after I recommended the sedan and came back and said “I still can’t get over the fact that it’s Hyundai and not a Honda.”

With that in mind, I figured we’d pop the question to our visitors. Regardless of how much Hyundai has evolved over the past couple of years, would drive one?

In tough times, even the richest people need to tighten the purse straps. In order to retain the feel of a luxury car without dishing out the cash, many are turning to cars like the Buick LaCrosse and Hyundai Genesis, as they offer amenities without flamboyance.

Analysts are able to see what vehicles are traded in when new cars are purchased, and thus track the ‘substitution effect’ and how widespread it is. In 2007, 3.5% of new Hyundai and Kia buyers traded in luxury vehicles; that figure rose to 7% for the 2011 model year.

“You could argue that value for the money is the new black, people want to get a good amount of value for the money,” Edmunds senior analyst Karl Brauer said. “Buying a car to impress the neighbors isn’t in any more. Fewer and fewer people can justify spending an extra $5,000 just to have that luxury badge on the hood.”

It’s been long rumored that Hyundai wants to spin-off a luxury brand under the name of ‘Genesis,’ following its huge success with the Genesis mid-size sedan and the Genesis Coupe. According to Hyundai of America’s CEO John Krafcik, Hyundai may end up adding two luxury models that could create a luxury brand that will compete with the likes of Lexus and Acura along with BMW and Audi.

Hyundai, which has increased its market share in the United States by 50 percent in the past two years, is considering a sports car sedan like the BMW 3-Series along with a crossover like the Lexus RX.

Krafcik said that Hyundai is considering three branding scenarios, with the most likely to be carried scenario being a subbrand called “Genesis” that will sell the models under the same dealership roof as Hyundai. Other scenarios include keeping the premium cars badged as Hyundais or spinning off a new brand with a separate dealer franchise.

“One of the keys to this plan is how well the Equus does,” Krafcik said. “We don’t need to make a decision for some time” on the branding question. He said that he wants all options to be open but is skeptical about spinning off a new luxury brand.

Ford, Chrysler, and GM may be losing their footing as far as their “Made in America” rankings go; Hyundai”s American arm”s CEO has told CNNMoney that 80% of the vehicles produced by the Seoul automaker for sale in America will be produced here. With the new Sonata earning a stellar safety rating earlier this month and Hyundai being one of the few carmakers able to manage a sales increase in 2009, Hyundai is on a roll.

“I’m going to build my three best selling cars in the U.S.,” head of Hyundai Motor America John Krafcik said. “Ford builds its best selling car in Mexico.”

Ford claims that although its biggest sellers are built outside of the country, the bulk of its vehicles are built on American soil; that number still tallies up to less than 80%. Ford has recently brought a number of manufacturing jobs back to the US however in a move to make older UAW plants more competitive.

Chrysler declined to state what percentage of its US sold cars are actually produced here and GM said their figure was between 60% and 70%. Automakers generally don’t state the percentage of U.S. built cars because under free trade agreements, cars produced in Canada, Mexico, and the U.S., all fall under the category of “North American Production.”
