In order to create a larger gap between the Hyundai brand and the premium vehicles it produces, the automaker is considering making a sub-brand under the Genesis label for the U.S.

Badges would be swapped on rear-wheel drive models including the Genesis sedan and coupe, and the Equus, and would trade in their current model names for an alphanumeric system. Although it would be a separate brand, Hyundai says the premium models would still be sold at its dealerships, and that a fully separate luxury brand is not at all an option.

“There’s a conversation going on within the company that says, ‘Does having the Hyundai badge on the premium vehicles sell more vehicles, or does it restrict us from selling more vehicles?’” said Dave Zuchowski, executive vice president of sales for Hyundai Motor America.

Sales numbers for Hyundai’s premium models certainly make the debate worthwhile, with 3,193 Equus models sold in its first full year released, well over the 2,300 the automaker anticipated. As for the Genesis Sedan and Coupe, sales for these models were up 13 in 2011 from 2010, putting 2011 total at 32,998.

With redesigns coming up for all of the premium models in 2013, Hyundai would have its best opportunity to make that move with the launch of the new generation.

Hyundai is now in its fifth consecutive year as a Super Bowl advertiser and will have a total of 5 commercials during the big game on February 5 including two pre-game spots with one during the highly-rated pre-kick time slot and two ads during the game.

“The general theme of the day focuses on elements that drive the Hyundai brand and culture, with the two in-game ads highlighting performance characteristics – bolstering a brand attribute that Hyundai doesn’t often emphasize,” the company said in a statement. “The campaign features interactive and digital content throughout, including outtakes, online extensions and social media engagement to extend the reach of the program. Creative was developed by Hyundai’s agency of record, Innocean Worldwide Americas.”

Two out of the five spots are called Cheetah and Think Fast. The Cheetah commercial features the 201-hp Hyundai Veloster Turbo and the Think Fast commercial shows the Genesis Coupe R-Spec.

Not that it is a priority with a sports car, but mileage picks up too; the V6 improves over both transmissions with 18 mpg city/28 highway for the auto, and one less on the highway for the manual. The four only picks up economy with the auto’ box at 20/31 and 21/30 for the manual.

Inside paddle shifters are just one of the changes. The six speed manual is still available in both cars, but now an 8-speed auto ‘box can be shifted via panels. Both the 2.0T and the 3.8 now have telescoping steering wheels and revised center stacks. As part of this interior revision comes the option of Hyundai’s BlueLink infotainment system.

Just two more things: this is a car where you can shut the stability control totally off, and with the four cylinder, the penalty for running regular gas instead of premium is only 14 bhp.

At one of Korea’s biggest motorsports competition, the Korea Speed Festival, Hyundai unveiled its new 2013 Genesis Coupe in front of 5,000 driving enthusiasts. This is the first facelift/redesign of the rear-wheel-drive Genesis Coupe since its introduction in October 2008 and it isn’t a bad one at all.

The 2013 Hyundai Genesis Coupe gets a new front fascia with a bold grille, redesigned LED headlamps and enhanced cooling performance. The back also receives a nice touch with new LED tail lamps and… well that’s about it.

Under the hood, the new 2013 Hyundai Genesis Coupe gets two powertrain choices (as reported yesterday). The base model gets the Theta 2.0 TCI 4-cylinder turbo unit making 271-hp and 275 lb-ft of torque. The V6 unit now gets the Lambda 3.8 GDi making 345-hp and 295 lb-ft of torque.

Both of the engine options are mated to an 8-speed automatic transmission and a 6-speed manual as standard.

Last week, Hyundai caved into all the leaks on the new Genesis Coupe and released the first official images of the car before the scheduled debut at the 2012 Detroit Auto Show. Willing to give out more information Hyundai confirmed some technical specs for the new 4 and 6-cylinder powertrains at a small event in Korea last week.

The base 2.0 liter turbocharged 4-cylinder will now produce 271-hp and 275 lb-ft of torque. That’s a significant increase from the current base model’s 210-hp and 223 lb-ft torque.

The new 3.8 liter V6 has received a huge shot of steroids and now produces 345-hp and 295 lb-ft of torque. That’s an increase of 39-hp and 29 lb-ft of torque over the outgoing V6.

Rumors suggest that the current 3.8 liter V6 will be dropped for a more powerful V6 from the Genesis sedan. That 3.8 liter V6 GDI engine should produce the same 333-hp and 291 lb-ft of torque as it does in the sedan version of the Genesis.

The Hyundai RM500 Genesis Coupe features the company’s award-winning 5.0 liter Tau V8 making 450-hp. While there is no word of it entering production, Hyundai says that the concept has a ‘production-ready look.’

“From the moment I saw the Tau V8 engine in the Genesis R-Spec sedan, I knew it would be a perfect fit for the Genesis Coupe, adding even more performance and power to the dynamic coupe,” said Rhys Millen, owner, Rhys Millen Racing. “The sleek and practical exterior modifications would allow this Genesis Coupe to look good parked in your driveway or turning laps at the track.”

Along with the Tau V8, the RM500 Genesis Coupe features a custom RMR stainless exhaust with GReddy rear section muffler and titanium tips, oil cooler and rear differential cooler. It also gets an RMR carbon front lip, carbon spoiler, carbon rear diffuser, carbon side skirts, carbon fog light ducts and carbon grill. The Genesis Coupe also showcases HRE 793-RS 19-inch wheels, Hankook Ventus R-S3 tires and Brembo carbon ceramic rotors with Brembo six and four piston calipers. The inside of the vehicle features the RMR suede trim package and Sparco accents.

Apart from some Katzkin leather seats, details are scant on the interior. The focus is on pushing the performance envelope as described by Terry Peddicord, director of sales, Hyundai America Technical Center: “One of the many exciting aspects of this project is that the Genesis Hurricane SC is not just another pretty face for the show circuit, but rather it is a hard working lab-rat that will push the bounds of this car and the whole vehicle segment.”

Hyundai worked with RMR not only to improve the aerodynamics but to show off the car’s sporting pretensions: the bumper, grille, valance, decklid spoiler and sideskirts are all new additions. In the appearance arena, LED headlights and taillights are provided by FlyRide.

At least for some of us, the most interesting modifications are mechanical: Bilstein Monotube shocks, a SPEC-supplied aluminum flywheel and stage two clutch, higher flow fuel filter and injectors from DeatschWerks, PermaCool oil, diff fluid cooler, steering fluid cooler and a CPR Fabrication oil filter adaptor.

Hyundai seems to be making a fair effort at pushing the mechanical upgrades, some of the parts will be on the SEMA floor for show-goers to interact with.

In a recent interview with WardsAuto, Hyundai Motor America chief John Krafcik highlighted some pretty important future product development decisions going on behind closed doors.

The Korean automaker currently offers models in most U.S. segments except for pickups and premium sports cars.

Krafcik said that he doesn’t see the need for a sports car right now that would go head-to-head with the Chevrolet Corvette or Nissan GT-R. He said that the move wouldn’t be a wise investment.

“I’m not saying we’d never do one, but it wouldn’t be a priority of mine,” Krafcik told WardsAuto. “You define your brand as much by what you choose not to do as what you do. We’ve got a laser-like focus on leading the industry in fuel efficiency. Would it be cool and fun to have a halo performance car? Yeah. But it would be expensive, and what would it really do for us?”

Krafcik said that the Genesis Coupe is a good halo sports car for now and is bringing buyers into dealerships.

It seems like the new 2012 Hyundai Genesis Coupe now gets a more fluid design that is bringing it closer to the current Hyundai lineup theme, introduced by the Hyundai Sonata.

Not too long ago, spy photos of Hyundai’s update for the Genesis Coupe have popped up around the Internetz. However, majority of them had the car decked out in camouflage, so it was hard to decipher the differences set forth by Hyundai. Now though, some photos of the new 2013 Hyundai Genesis Coupe have popped up and they’re in clear view.

A member from a Genesis Coupe enthusiast forum posted a set of cellphone pictures of what obviously appears to be a new Genesis Coupe. The front obviously takes the blunt of the redesign as you can see in the pictures. But to be honest, from these photos, I can’t say I like the new facelift.

Other updates for the 2013 Genesis Coupe include redesigned taillights that utilize LEDs, a reshaped rear bumper, more aggressive wheels and new exterior mirros that incorporate turning signals now.

The refreshed Genesis Coupe is also expected to get Hyundai’s updated 3.8L V6 with direct injection, which is good for 333hp and 291 lb-ft of torque. Lastly, a new option for an 8-speed automatic is now available.

Hyundai of Germany has just unveiled a new limited edition of the Hyundai Genesis Coupe GT just for Germany.

Inspired by the Hyundai Schuhmann Motor Sport Team that raced a Genesis Coupe at the 24 Hours of Nurburgring in June, the unique Genesis Coupe GT comes standard with the 3.8L V6 good for 299hp and 266 lb-ft of torque. A bespoke stainless steel quad-exhaust, lowered suspension, and uniqqe OZ Ultraleggera 19-inchers are also equipped to the limited edition Genesis.

The results are a 0-60 time of 6.3 seconds and a top speed of 149mph. Only 50 unites will be available in Germany and price start at just €41,990.

While that is a long way off, reports suggest that the wait will be worth it as the 2012 Genesis Coupe will have an updated exterior and increased output for both its powertrain choices.

Right now, the rear-wheel-drive 2011 Hyundai Genesis Coupe is available with either a 210-hp 2.0L turbo 4-cylinder or a 306-hp 3.8L V6. Hyundai offers a 6-speed manual transmission, a 5-speed automatic or a 6-speed automatic.

The 2012 Hyundai Genesis Coupe is expected to get the V6 upgrade found in the sedan, giving it a nice 333-hp with a maximum torque of 291 lb-ft. We’re pretty excited to see how it performs.

2011 Hyundai Sonata 2.0T Turbo

Ford, Chrysler, and GM may be losing their footing as far as their “Made in America” rankings go; Hyundai”s American arm”s CEO has told CNNMoney that 80% of the vehicles produced by the Seoul automaker for sale in America will be produced here. With the new Sonata earning a stellar safety rating earlier this month and Hyundai being one of the few carmakers able to manage a sales increase in 2009, Hyundai is on a roll.

“I’m going to build my three best selling cars in the U.S.,” head of Hyundai Motor America John Krafcik said. “Ford builds its best selling car in Mexico.”

Ford claims that although its biggest sellers are built outside of the country, the bulk of its vehicles are built on American soil; that number still tallies up to less than 80%. Ford has recently brought a number of manufacturing jobs back to the US however in a move to make older UAW plants more competitive.

Chrysler declined to state what percentage of its US sold cars are actually produced here and GM said their figure was between 60% and 70%. Automakers generally don’t state the percentage of U.S. built cars because under free trade agreements, cars produced in Canada, Mexico, and the U.S., all fall under the category of “North American Production.”

Like last year, the Hyundai Genesis Coupe will be highlighting the Korean automakers SEMA show display for the 2010 show. One of the most significant debuts for Hyundai will be the Gogogear Racing Genesis Coupe, which the company says highlights the cars racing and high-end performance capabilities.

“The Genesis Coupe is designed to convey that Hyundai can not only match the best from Asia, Europe and America, but beat them,” said Ali Arsham, owner, Gogogear Racing. “With its potent V6 engine and rear drive chassis, the Genesis Coupe has the ability to beat the current top guns that feature turbocharged four-cylinder engines and front wheel drive. It has ample power, terrific handling, and great reliability that become even more potent with the modifications we’ve planned.”

Changes to the Genesis Coupe will prepare the model for the track. Power from the V6 has been increased to 330-hp with a maximum torque of 280 lb-ft by adding an AEM air intake, Magnaflow exhaust system and ARK Performance headers. The Gogogear Racing Genesis Coupe will also get Ground Control suspension tuning with ARK Performance shocks, springs, coilovers and QA1 bearing along with a light weight Spec racing clutch.

HYUNDAI GENESIS COUPE RACE CAR FROM GOGOGEAR RACING READY FOR COMPETITION AND SEMA SHOW 2010

FOUNTAIN VALLEY, Calif., Oct. 19, 2010 ““ To showcase the power, speed and tunability of the Genesis Coupe, Hyundai has teamed up with Gogogear Racing to develop a high performance racing competitor that will be unveiled at the 2010 SEMA Show. The Gogogear Racing Genesis Coupe emphasizes racing reliability and high-end performance capabilities. Additionally, the bright yellow paint scheme was designed in conjunction with Hyundai’s California Design Center.

Gogogear Racing plans to show off the performance capabilities of its modified Genesis Coupe car in the U.S. Touring Car Championships in 2011 which is sanctioned by the premiere auto racing sanctioning body in the U.S., the National Auto Sport Association. The car also has the potential to run at selected events including Time Attack and endurance races.

Modifications to the Genesis Coupe will prepare the performance vehicle for the track. Mechanical adjustments to the engine aim to produce 330 horsepower and 280 lb. ft. of torque by adding an AEM air intake, Magnaflow exhaust system and ARK Performance headers. A Moroso accumulator will ensure proper lubrication of the engine under the expected 1.4 Gs of cornering loads. Earl’s fittings, lines and oil cooler ensure a steady flow of oil to the 3.8 liter V6 under all conditions. The Gogogear Racing Genesis Coupe will also feature Ground Control suspension tuning with ARK Performance shocks, springs, coilovers and QA1 bearings. A light weight Spec racing clutch will increase reliability and help with quick and direct shifts of the stock close ratio six-speed manual transmission. At each corner, StopTech brakes, Hawk racing pads, Konig lightweight wheels and BF Goodrich R1 street legal race tires with aluminum light weight Gorilla lugs and H&R spacers will ensure proper grip with the road. “The BF Goodrich R1 tires are a key ingredient towards achieving the 1.4 Gs of cornering force that we are aiming for,” said Arsham. Additionally, an Optima Battery was installed to ensure reliable starting and electrical power and was relocated to the rear with the help of a Taylor Vertex kit for improved weight balance.

On the exterior, Gogogear Racing will increase the aerodynamics of the vehicle by adding an APR rear wing and an ARK Performance body kit. To lighten the car and to lower the center of gravity, a carbon fiber roof replaces the original steel roof. The exterior will be treated to a set of eye-catching, custom Gogogear.com graphics using Oracal products.

Inside, the Genesis Coupe will be gutted and include Sparco race seats and seat belts, a full custom Metric Motorsports roll cage, a SPA Techniques fire suppression system and a two-way radio to further ready the car for its racing debut. A RacePak IQ3 data logger dash supplies critical information and lap times to the driver. A Linear Logic Scan Gauge II further notifies the driver of secondary engine parameters. The interior will be treated to Dupli Color’s Daytona Yellow paint job to match the exterior. All work on the car by the Gogogear Racing members will be carried out using Ironclad Performance wear and gloves.
