The NSX concept looks a bit less forgettable, make that a lot less forgettable: the best part is the front splitter, but the traditional unaltered Acura grille fits in perfectly.

The following are confirmed facts: the next NSX will be a V6 powered hybrid with Acura’s SH all wheel drive. Honda/Acura have decided that the next NSX will focus more on a favorable power to weight ratio rather than an abrasive powerplant, similar and yet different from the original NSX. This point was driven home by Takanobu Ito, CEO of Honda:In this new era, even as we focus on the fun to drive spirit of the NSX, I think a supercar must respond positively to environmental responsibilities.

“This Sport Hybrid SH-AWD system will make NSX the ultimate expression of Acura’s idea to create synergy between man and machine,” said Takanobu Ito, president and CEO of Honda Motor Co., Ltd. “The NSX will make the driver one with the car to enhance dynamic driving abilities without getting in the way.”

In this world of direct injection, carbon fiber and aluminum, I am sure they will find a way to make it a greater success than the original.

Production of the Acura NSX will take place in 3 years in Ohio.

At the 2012 Detroit Auto Show tomorrow, Acura will display a new NSX Concept. While we’ve heard previous reports of what could be powering the new model, latest reports suggest that the NSX will return as a 400-hp four-wheel-drive hybrid that will compete with the likes of the Audi R8.

Power for the model will come from a 3.5 liter V6 engine driving one axle and pair of electric-motors driving the other. With output of more than 400-hp, 0 to 62 mph should take around 5 seconds.

We’ll have more details from the Detroit show tomorrow. Stay tuned.

Acura has just officially confirmed in a press released that it will show the new NSX Concept at the 2012 Detroit Auto Show on Jan. 10. That’s right JDM fans – mark your calendars – the comeback of the NSX is about to start.

“Finally, Acura will debut the NSX Concept, which represents the styling direction for the next generation of Acura’s super sports car,” Acura said in a statement.

We have no official details of what will power the next Acura NSX but there have been reports of a high-performance hybrid or electric powertrain with a possibility of an all-wheel-drive system. Of course, we’re crossing our fingers for that not to be true as we’d love something that’s totally gasoline powered and holds its own when competing against the Nissan GT-R.

More details from the Detroit show floor next month.

According to reports coming out of the UK, Honda has confirmed it is working on a new concept that will hint at a range-topping sports car that will debut at the 2012 Detroit Auto Show in January.

Known as the Super Sports Concept, the mode will follow the Small Sports EV Concept (pictured above) that will make its debut at the 2011 Tokyo Motor Show this week.

The Honda Super Sports Concept will be a spiritual successor to the NSX. No details are available as of yet, but we’ve heard reports of a high-performance hybrid or electric powertrain with a possibility of an all-wheel-drive system.

Honda has been under the spotlight for quite some time now with a lot of rumors circulating about its replacement to the famous halo car, the NSX (you can read all of the here). And to make things a bit better or worse, word is that Honda’s R&D boss Mibe Toshihiro has confirmed that an NSX is in development. The catch is however, that the replacement will most likely either be a hybrid or an EV NSX replacement.

“We are now at a point where we can consider the next generation of electric and hybrid vehicles. President Ito has already mentioned a new NSX, and we have looked at that in the R&D department,” said Toshihiro. “It would be an interesting project — electric or hybrid vehicles can be fun as well as economical.”

Despite the positive note that Honda is working on a halo car, the rumor that it will either be a hybrid or an EV is a bit disappointing, especially since Lexus is asking for a competitor with its LF-A supercar. Additionally, some other reports said that Honda’s president Takanobu Ito said that the next-generation NSX won’t follow the same formula as the original. Well, that doesn’t sound too promising.

To put things in perspective, Honda once said on the original press release for the NSX that “Cars, no matter their market niche, should be amply endowed with a large dose of driving fun.” The NSX was the purest embodiment of Honda’s corporate philosophy, one that put Honda on the performance map for sure and gained them their enthusiast following. But as we’ve seen already, anything with a hybrid or alternative powertrain is far from truly fun. So the new NSX sounds like it’s shaping up to be something that will fall short to filling the same shoes and do the same justice that the original NSX did. At which point, is it even worth it?

Boy, have the times changed. Either way, it will definitely be interesting to see what Honda has to show for its rumors and reports when the Tokyo Motor Show rolls around.

The Honda/Acura NSX is one supercar that we’re kind of sick of writing about – and no it’s not because we have a distaste for the car – we just have a distaste of rumors about a successor for the car being on and off.

New reports suggest that the new Acura sports cars concept seen recently on the set of The Avengers in Central Park, New York, with actor Robert Downey Jr at the wheel, is a teaser to the next-generation NSX.

Apparently, a source inside Honda has told AutoExpress that the dual note 4WD hybrid concept from the 2001 Tokyo Motor Show was our look at the technology that will underpin the NSX. That concept was powered by a 3.5-liter V6 and an in-wheel electric motor that pushed over 400-hp.

Click here for more news on the Acura NSX.

Insiders say that Honda is working on a new 3.5 liter to 3.7 liter VTEC V6 with a twin electric motor set-up that will get its juice from lithium-ion batteries. It will have a plug-in recharge system for a small electric-only driving range.

If all this is to be believed, the next Honda / Acura NSX will debut sometime in 2014.

Honda is reviving the NSX with an all new version of the sportscar icon, revealed by president and CEO Takanodu Ito.

Part of what Ito is setting out to enhance is the power-to-weight ratio, as he comments “I spent part of my early career at Honda developing the NSX, and specifically the aluminum body…I really enjoyed that experience, and learned much, so it is my wish that Honda engineers have the experience of developing a sportscar like the NSX in the future. Within Honda, our engineers are already looking at developing such a car.”

Previous plans for a 2010 release of the NSX were up cancelled due to economic decline back in 2008. Since then, Honda has decided to enhance the sport aspect of the brand, but in a manner more conducive to the economic climate.

Ito says “Our recent efforts have been focused on fuel efficiency, and that perhaps gives the impression Honda is behind with pushing the brand image of sportiness, but let me assure you that is not the case…We will address that impression with our new generation of cars.”

Earlier this month, Honda’s CEO Takanobu Ito shocked enthusiasts everywhere when he confirmed that the company is working on a new sports car that will be the “spiritual successor” to the discontinued Acura NSX. Instead of a 600-hp 5.5L V10 engine, as the successor of the NSX was supposed to have during early stages of development a couple years ago, the new model is said to be powered by a 3.5L V6 gasoline-electric hybrid system.

Sources now suggest that Honda is also working on a successor to the Acura RSX. Insiders say that the next Acura RSX will feature the same 2.4L 4-cylinder engine from the new 2012 Honda Civic Si. The engine is good for making 201-hp at 7,000 rpm and 170 lb-ft of torque at 4,300 rpm.

Later down the line, the Honda brand itself is also considering a ‘more reasonably priced’ C-segment sports coupe. Honda dealers have been requesting a new coupe that will fit below the Accord Coupe but will use the car’s hardware. The model can be seen as a competitor to the upcoming Toyota FT-86 or Scion FR-S coupe.

Here is some nice enthusiast news to kick-off your day. Honda’s CEO Takanobu Ito has officially confirmed that the company is working on a new sports car that will be the “spiritual successor” to the discontinued Acura NSX.

Recent reports suggest that the successor to the NSX will not get a 600-hp 5.5L V10, but a “valveless throttle” 3.5L V6 mated to a hybrid system producing somewhere around 450-hp. While Ito didn’t confirm specifics, he did say that the next NSX will be exhilarating to drive but also environmentally friendly: “That’s the kind of sports car we want to make.”

A Honda spokesman said that the next-generation NSX will us an electric drivetrain to give the gasoline engine a boost and will be positioned a high-performance counterpart to the two-seat Honda CR-Z Hybrid.

Click here for more news on the Acura NSX.

“We are working very hard on it,” Ito said.

Ito did not confirm when we’ll be able to see the next NSX. His predecessor Takeo Fukui killed plans for an NSX replacement as one of several cost-saving cutbacks.

Since Acura/Honda had stopped making the world’s best handling mid-engined car, the NSX, back in 2005, they’ve been toying with replacement ideas, all of which never made it into production. So we’ve kind of lost hope for the pioneering Japanese luxury brand, despite the Honda subsidiary confirming plans for a new sports car.

After Honda’s president told a Japanese newspaper that the make is still in the works of a sports car, he made sure to tell everyone that it will not be a follow-up to the legendary NSX. And this is after Honda axed their V8 program, NSX-replacement program, and altogether their general rear-wheel-drive development.

Honda stated that all of its plans were cut “due to the usual concerns of high cost and obscene consumption.” And this absolutely makes n sense because even Aston Martin has been working to keep up with the performance crushing CAFÉ regulations…albeit it’s not something we think they should be proud of but they’re just working the system. So if they can do it, why not a well-established brand like Honda?

Based on their current offerings, all of which are based on front-wheel drive platforms, are either front- or all-wheel drive, have either V6s or four-bangers, and the absence of a rear-wheel drive platform, things look bleak for Honda. Simply put, we’re equally just as worried.

According to Japan’s Mainichi News, Honda’s president Takashi Ito has announced that the company will be renewing its development on a replacement for the Honda NSX supercar. Ito said that original plans to put the Honda / Acura NSX into production were on hold due to the Lehman Shock (Japanese for Global Financial Crisis) in 2008.

Ito now believes that Honda ‘must answer’ to the Lexus LFA and the Nissan GT-R.

Recent reports suggest that the NSX will come back as a more eco-friendly hybrid sports car that will be powered by a 3.5L V6 making somewhere around 400-hp and Honda’s SH-AWD system.

We’ll have more details for you as we get them. Stay tuned.

In 2008, Honda had talked of a successor to the popular NSX supercar – however, the Japanese automaker couldn’t find a business case to develop the car. According to insiders, Honda never gave up on the plans for an NSX successor and the car is expected to live on in a different form.

The next NSX is expected to be marketed as a more eco-friendly sports coupe, which can be “driven with either a clutch and an engine only, the engine and motor only, or the motor only,” says our source. Manual and automatic transmissions will be offered.

Power will come from either a 2.4L 4-cylinder or a 3.5L V6. The 3.5L V6 is expected to produce somewhere north of 400 horsepower. The model will also employ a version of Honda’s SH-AWD system, but Honda will apply NSX concept technology by fitting the rear-drive-based SH-AWD setup. Sources say that Honda will opt for the front-wheel-drive Accord platform as a base for the car but engineers will swap the front and rear around to create a rear midship AWD package.

If the coupe gets the green light, it will hit showrooms as early as 2014. it is still unclear if the car will make it to the United States.

The Honda NSX, or Acura NSX in North America, was a very popular sports car that the Japanese automaker produced between 1990 and 2005 (if you don’t know the Honda/Acura NSX, then you basically aren’t that well educated in cars).

The mid-engined, rear-wheel-drive sports car ended production in 2005 after a few hundred vehicles sold annually worldwide. Honda felt that the very high cost of manufacturing the NSX along with the interest of producing a new model with a V10 engine made a weak business case to continue production. In 2005, honda officially announced that it will cease production of the NSX and allocate the resources to develop a successor.

In December 2007, Honda’s American CEO, Tetsuo Iwamura, confirmed that a new NSX powered by a V10 engine was in the works and would be introduced to the market in 2010. However, that never happened and we still long for a successor to the original NSX.

Either way, the folks at FORMAT67.net have created a 6 minute (6:17 to be exact) tribute to the NSX.

Check it out after the jump – and we recommend sitting back in your chair turning up the volume on your speakers as the video is very pleasing to the eyes and ears.

Of course we’re a bit skeptical since Honda has repeatedly confirmed that it has no plans to do a next-generation NSX.

Either way, it would be nice to see this become a reality but we’ll have to file this under “Rumor” for now.

Refresher: Power for the Honda HSV-10 Super GT comes from a 3.4L V8 making 500-hp with a maximum torque of 289 lb-ft. It is mated to a Ricardo sequential gearbox with steering wheel paddle shifters.

About a month ago, we told you that the next-generation Acura / Honda NSX could get a second chance at life as a front-engined race car and could be revived courtesy of a change in the rules of Japan”s Super GT racing series. Well, here it is… at least an image of it with very little details.

Known as the HSV-10 GT, the Super GT racecar is powered by a 3.4L V8 making more than 500-hp mated to a Ricardo sequential gearbox.

Honda engineers didn’t have to spend too much time on the HSV-10 GT since development of the V10 powered supercar and its race version were already well underway when plans were shelved. Both models were scheduled to launch side-by-side in early 2010.

Last year, Honda shelved plans or a new-generation Acura NSX. However, it is now reported that plans for a front-engined replacement for the supercar could be revived courtesy of a change in the rules of Japan’s Super GT racing series.

According to a report by PistonHeads, Super GT regulations banning mid-engined layouts could give the front-engined NSX a second chance, but only for the race car version. Lucky for Honda, development of the V10 powered supercar and its race version were already well underway when plans were shelved. Both projects were scheduled to launch simultaneously in early 2010.

Don’t get your hopes up just yet. Sources say that the GT race version of the car may not spawn a road car. Honda is crossing its fingers that Super GT allows them to run the car without having to produce a road-going version.

Before the end of last year, it was reported that Honda killed the much-anticipated successor to the Acura / Honda NSX – apparently those reports were interpreted the wrong way. According to 7Tune, the NSX project is moving ahead with some changes on the drawing board.

Sources say that the program has been steadily progressing since the NSX prototype’s appearance at the Nurburgring last year. However, the project has now changed over to become what Honda calls the “Super Hybrid Sports.” Honda is working on a more environmentally-friendly approach to the NSX in a direct answer to Toyota’s FT-HS hybrid sports car (which is not confirmed for production – so we’re a bit confused here).

Instead of being powered by a 600-hp 5.5L V10, the NSX successor will now carry the ”valveless throttle” 3.5L V6 mated to a hybrid system. That will allow the car to produce a total of 450-hp for some dynamic performance. Extra weight will be added to the car due to the ”SH-AWD system, which will be bolted to an aluminum platform and feature a rear transaxle just like the R35 Nissan GT-R.”

The previously scheduled 2010 debut has been pushed back. No confirmation on when the NSX successor will debut.
