At the Goodwood Festival of Speed earlier this year, Honda surprised hot-hatch fans with the Honda CR-Z Mugen RR – a supercharged 1.5-liter CR-Z equipped with an IMA hybrid system, pumping out 197-hp and 181 lb-ft of torque. That gave it the ability to go from 0 to 60 mph comes in at approximately 6.6 seconds.

As outstanding it was, Honda kept saying that the CR-Z Mugen RR was just a concept… until now.

Honda of UK confirmed today that it has joined forces with Mugen Euro to launch a hybrid CR-Z called the ‘Honda CR-Z ICF.’

Mugen Euro engineers worked on the 1.5 liter unit giving it a centrifugal forced air induction system, charge-air cooler and induction system and a remapped ECU. That allows the Honda CR-Z ICF to produce a nice 173-hp, which helps it to hit a top speed of 130+ mph and allows it to run o to 62 mph in just 6.1 seconds – that’s over 3 seconds quicker than the standard CR-Z.

“MUGEN Euro magic has created a super responsive yet eco-conscious model building on our sporting credentials and giving us the ability to compete in the “hot hatch” marketplace as we move into 2012,” said Martin Moll, Head of Honda marketing.

Sales will begin in the UK in spring 2012 with prices starting around £24,000 ($37,480 USD).

Honda has unveiled the 2012 Honda CR-Z and there are no changes at all besides the fact that it comes with a new black seat fabric (replacing the standard silver mesh sport seats) becomes an option on cars with the Crystal Black Pearl exterior color. Well, that and the fact that the price has gone up by $200.

Click here for more news on the Honda CR-Z.

The 2012 Honda CR-Z now starts at $19,545 instead of the $19,345 price tag of the 2011 model year. On top of that you’ll have to pay a destination and handling charge of $770, pushing the price of the 2012 Honda CR-Z to $20,315.

There are no exterior, interior or packaging changes at all. Power for the 2012 Honda CR-Z still comes from a 1.5 liter i-VTEC mated to Honda’s Integrated Motor Assist hybrid system. Together the system produces 122-hp and a maximum torque of 128 lb-ft. When mated to a 6-speed manual, the CR-Z returns an EPA-estimated 31/37/34 mpg (city/highway/combined). With the CVT transmission, the CR-Z returns 35/39/37 mpg.

Press Release:

2012 Honda CR-Z Sport Hybrid Coupe Promotes Performance and Fuel Economy
Two-passenger coupe features an aggressive exterior, driver-focused cockpit and three-mode drive system

All new for 2011 when it was named the “Most-Efficient Two Seater” by the EPA1, the 2012 CR-Z debuts today with one available feature change – a new black seat fabric becomes an option on cars with the Crystal Black Pearl exterior color, replacing the standard silver mesh sport seats. The 2012 CR-Z starts at $19,545, plus a destination and handling2 charge of $770.

The CR-Z is available in two models – the well-equipped CR-Z and the feature-rich CR-Z EX. A six-speed manual transmission is standard equipment and a Continuously Variable Transmission (CVT) is available. Standard features on the CR-Z include Vehicle Stability Assist, an AM/FM/CD/USB audio system with six speakers, automatic climate control, power windows and door locks, remote entry, cruise control, and more.

The CR-Z EX adds High-Intensity Discharge (HID) Headlights with Auto-On/Off, fog lights, a 360-Watt AM/FM/CD Premium Audio System with seven speakers including subwoofer, Bluetooth® HandsFreeLink®, perforated leather-wrapped steering wheel, and more. The CR-Z EX is available with the Honda Satellite-Linked Navigation System3 with voice recognition.

Technological Sophistication Inside and Out

The exterior’s “one-motion” wedge form begins at its low-slung hood to form a broad forward stance. A side profile with a deeply inset beltline adds a dynamic element, while the short wheelbase and large, wide front grille accent the vehicle’s athletic look. Exterior colors include Crystal Black Pearl, Milano Red Pearl, North Shore Blue Metallic (exclusive to CR-Z), Premium White Pearl and Storm Silver Metallic.

A high-tech appearance and intuitive controls define the interior. Instrument panel meters illuminate with a three-dimensional blue color theme resulting in a multi-layered appearance. Set against textured black materials and aluminum-style trim accents, the upper portion of the dashboard extends toward the driver to provide a wraparound cockpit environment. Premium sport-oriented seats are designed to provide firm lateral support along with everyday driving comfort. A mid-ship console behind the front seats optimizes cargo space, and a hard-shell separator can be closed to create additional hidden storage.

The CR-Z features a six-speaker, 160-watt AM/FM/CD audio system with an auxiliary input jack for connection to a portable audio player, and all models include a USB audio interface4 for connecting an iPod5 or other compatible audio device. Other audio features include speed-sensitive volume control and CD/MP3 text readout. The radio data system shows supplemental programming information from participating radio stations while also offering search-by-genre capability (not available on the CR-Z EX with navigation).

The Honda Satellite-Linked Navigation System™3 is available on the CR-Z EX model and features a 6.5-inch display. The navigation system database includes more than 7-million points of interest and integrates the audio system. The voice recognition feature is capable of inputting numbers, street names and cities, in addition to more than 600 commands. Data storage is via a single DVD that contains information for the entire United States.

Performance and Efficiency

The CR-Z hybrid powertrain is a unique variation of Honda’s original IMA technology , which originally debuted on the 2000 Honda Insight, the first hybrid vehicle available for sale in North America. The system utilizes a four-cylinder, 16-valve, single-overhead cam engine with “intelligent” Variable Valve Timing and Lift Electronic Control (i-VTEC) that receives additional power from the Integrated Motor Assist (IMA) system’s DC brushless electric motor. The system delivers a combined peak output of 122 horsepower at 6000 RPM and 128 lb-ft. of torque at 1000 to 1750 RPM (123 lb-ft. at 1000 to 2000 on CVT-equipped models).

The 10-kilowatt electric motor assists in acceleration and also acts as a generator during braking or coasting to capture kinetic energy that recharges the 100-volt IMA nickel-metal hydride battery pack. The gasoline engine can automatically turn off during vehicle stops to improve efficiency. When starting on steep inclines from a stop with the manual transmission, hill start assist temporarily prevents the vehicle from rolling backwards during the moment between releasing the brake, depressing the throttle and releasing the clutch.

EPA-estimated fuel economy6 is 35/39/37 city/highway/combined mpg on CVT-equipped models and 31/37/34 city/highway/combined mpg on manual models. The CR-Z is rated as an Advanced Technology Partial Zero Emissions Vehicle (AT-PZEV) in states that adhere to California Air Resource Board (CARB) ZEV standards (EPA Tier 2, Bin 2 in all states).

Three-Mode Drive System

Activated via three backlit buttons to the left of the steering wheel, the three-mode drive system allows the driver to select between individual modes of performance for Sport, Normal and Economy driving styles:

Sport mode enhances engine throttle responsiveness, electric power steering effort and the electric motor power assist.

Normal mode standardizes steering, engine response, motor assist and air conditioning settings.

Econ mode can increase the potential for enhanced fuel efficiency by optimizing throttle angle for smooth acceleration, lower engine rpm and limiting power and torque by approximately 4 percent (except at wide-open throttle). It can also reduce the air conditioning’s overall load on the engine and modify the cruise control to operate more efficiently.

Safety by Design

The CR-Z demonstrates a commitment to safety in its design and construction. The Advanced Compatibility Engineering™ (ACE™) body structure helps protect vehicle occupants in a frontal collision. Additional safety technologies include: standard dual-stage, multiple-threshold front airbags; standard front-side airbags with passenger-side Occupant Position Detection System (OPDS); side-curtain airbags, active head restraints; an anti-lock braking system (ABS); a tire pressure monitoring system; and a pedestrian injury mitigation design in the front of the vehicle.

Sport-Tuned Chassis

The front MacPherson strut and rear H-shaped torsion beam suspension are tuned to provide a sporty driving experience. All models are equipped with 16×6-inch aluminum wheels with 195/55R16 86V tires, while accessory 17×7 alloy wheels with 205/45R17 84V tires are available. The standard anti-lock braking system (ABS) with electronic brake distribution (EBD) uses ventilated front discs and solid rear discs. The low vehicle height and placement of the battery and other hybrid components beneath the rear cargo area further contribute to a low center of gravity and responsive, sporty handling. Electric power-assisted rack-and-pinion steering enhances steering performance and improves efficiency.

Warranty

The 2012 Honda CR-Z is covered by a 3-year/36,000-mile new-car limited warranty, a 5-year/60,000-mile powertrain limited warranty, and a 5-year/unlimited-mile corrosion limited warranty.

Honda is recalling close to a 100,000 vehicles worldwide to fix power windows and computer systems, the company announced today.

In the United States, Honda is recalling 80,111 CR-V vehicles from the 2006 model year in the U.S. to replace the power window master switch.

“The design of the power window master switch can allow residue from interior cleaners to accumulate, which can, over time with switch use, cause the electrical contacts to degrade and may lead to a fire in the switch,” Honda said of the CR-V issue.

Honda is also voluntarily recalling 5,626 CR-Z vehicles from the 2011 model year in the U.S. that are equipped with manual transmissions to update the software that controls the hybrid electric motor.

“In the affected vehicles, when the gasoline engine has stalled with the IMA battery in a very low state of charge and the transmission in gear, it is possible for the electric motor to rotate in the direction opposite to that selected by the transmission,” Honda said of the CR-Z problem. “If this occurs and the driver has not engaged the brakes, the vehicle may slowly roll in an unexpected direction (e.g., backwards when the transmission is in a forward gear), potentially leading to a crash.”

Notification to customers will begin in late September, 2011. You can find out more details going on-line to www.recalls.honda.com or by calling (800) 999-1009, and selecting option 4.

Mugen of Japan has just recently unveiled some new photos of its latest efforts, the Honda CR-Z Mugen RR. Built to show off the capabilities of the CR-Z in terms of function, style, performance and ability, the CR-Z Mugen RR is a concept with no further plans for production.

The CR-Z Mugen RR features unique styling both inside and out, heightened use of carbon fiber on parts like the hood, passenger doors and rear tailgate and much more.

Performance wise, a new twin-central exit exhaust is equipped with vented front bumpers to help in cooling and aerdynamics, as well as specially developed racing suspension. Upgraded 4-piston brakes are added too while being complemented by forged 18-inch alloy wheels.

The CR-Z Mugen RR made its debut at this year’s Moving Motor Show at the Goodwood Festival of Speed this past July.

We here at egmCarTech love the new Honda CR-Z. Though we were a bit surprised by the lack of any decently measureable amount of performance. Sure, we weren’t expecting an all out tire-roasting hatchback as it is built to also be kind to the environment. But we thought it could use some extra power since we think the CR-Z would make a better case for itself as the CR-Z does provide some fun. And boy, did Honda listen.

Honda’s trademark tuning firm Mugen was under close watch as they unveiled their version of the CR-Z hatcback not too long ago. And just recently, they unveiled everything you need to know about Honda’s hottest hybrid yet, which almost sounds counterintuitive.

Click here for more news on the Honda CR-Z.

Awaiting a full reveal at the Goodwood Festival of Speed in July, Honda and Mugen decided to release the full specification sheets to the Mugen CR-Z at a special press conference.

“We wanted a car that has genuine performance available at the touch of a button, but can perform just like a standard CR-Z and offer good fuel economy when the driver wishes,” said Mugen of Europe’s correspondent, Colin Wittamore. “For that reason, we’ve kept the three driving modes, so the driver can select “eco” or “normal” to switch to economy and low emissions for daily driving, but press the Mugen button for the full-blown weekend-warrior settings.”

With hopes to offer a Civic Type-R-like performance and feel in conjunction with the preexisting eco-friendly demeanor of the normal CR-Z, the Mugen CR-Z will keep the standard CR-Z’s 1.5L four-banger with Honda’s IMA (Integrated Motor Assist). It was also reworked with upgraded and strengthened internal components. On top of that, Mugen equipped their CR-Z with the iCF system, or Integrated Centrifugal Forced-Induction, which was designed specifically for the CR-Z. I think that’s their way of saying that this baby is turbo- or supercharged.

The result is a 50% increase in power and torque, rated at 200-hp and a peak torque of roughly 159 lb-ft of torques. As for some performance figures, a 0-60 time of 6.6 seconds nearly matches that of a Civic Type-R, thanks to some weight reduction as well. Thanks to these upgrades, the Mugen CR-Z can also achieve an average fuel consumption rating of about 42mpg in “Eco” mode and about 29.4 mpg in “Mugen” mode.

The Mugen CR-Z also features a widened track in both the front and rear and is equipped with a five-way adjustable shocks and a limited slip differential. Stoppers are Mugen’s own four-piston calipers with discs all around. The body receives a more aggressive kit with a carbon fiber hood and 17in forged alloys, courtesy of Mugen’s own supply.

On the inside, Recaro seats will be you support with a reworked interior to let you know that you’re by no means in a normal CR-Z. Some of those changes include the addition of water and oil temperature, and oil pressure gauges, a unique gear shifter and some carbon fibre appointments.

Stay tuned as we provide coverage for the hottest Honda hybrid yet as it gets fully unveiled next month.

Honda and MUGEN Euro have released the first official photographs of the new Honda CR-Z MUGEN – the higher-performance <del>hybrid</del> hatchback that the CR-Z should have been from the start.

“Development of the supercharged Honda CR-Z is on track, with performance figures already looking promising,” Honda said. “Early tests with a prototype car based on a standard CR-Z and a mid-tune engine have given 0-60mph times around that of the Civic Type R.”

Power for the Honda CR-Z Mugen will come from a 1.5L i-VTEC gasoline engine that will get a supercharger, boosting output to 200-ps (197-hp) with a maximum torque of 181 lb-ft.

“Early fuel consumption tests have also been encouraging,” says Colin Whittamore from MUGEN Euro. “We’ve retained the three driving modes from the standard car and economy ranges from 50+mpg in ‘eco’ mode to mid-30 mpg when tapping into the supercharged power in a special ‘MUGEN’ mode.”

We recently tested the 2011 Honda CR-Z and were fairly impressed by the hybrid hatchback. However, we kept finding ourselves yearning for more power and more zip for a hatchback that looked as aggressive as the CR-Z.

Well, our thirst is about to be quenched… sort of. Honda’s tuning arm Mugen has officially confirmed that it is working on a one-off supercharged Honda CR-Z Hybrid, which will make it world debut at the Goodwood Festival of Speed in July. Mugen said there are no plans of production yet.

Power for the Mugen Honda CR-Z will come from a 1.5L i-VTEC gasoline engine that will get a supercharger, helping it produce 200-ps (197-hp) with a maximum torque of 181 lb-ft.

Click here for more news on the Honda CR-Z.

“The idea was to use the significant advantage of the early torque provided by the Honda IMA electric motor, then increase the torque available from the petrol engine gradually, to first maintain and then increase this,” says Colin Whittamore from MUGEN Euro. “A supercharger and complementary electronics allow us to very neatly map the IMA to the extra power and torque of the engine in a unique package, giving a smooth, integrated and powerful driving experience.”

Other performance enhancement features include tuning to the chassis dynamics, with 5-step adjustable dampers fitted front and rear, an increase in track width and a large reduction in overall weight. Stopping power will come from larger brake discs and 4-pot monobloc calipers.

Refresher: The 2011 Honda CR-Z is powered by a 1.5L i-VTEC mated to Honda”s Integrated Motor Assist hybrid system. It produces a total of 122-hp and a maximum torque of 128 lb-ft. When mated to a 6-speed manual, the CR-Z returns an EPA-estimated 31/37/34 mpg (city/highway/combined). With the CVT transmission, the CR-Z returns 35/39/37 mpg. Prices in the United States start at $19,200.

Hybrids tend to occupy vehicle bodies that are, for lack of better words, awkward and unstylish. Honda’s hybrid designers showed us that this likely always true with the design of the first and second-generation Insight. But the Japanese automaker is here to prove us wrong and show us that hybrid and ugly don’t always have to go hand-in-hand. Meet the 2011 CR-Z Hybrid – the first hybrid vehicle designed to entice a more spirited driver, as it is offered with a 6-speed manual transmission and a very sport design that is sure to attract the attention of performance enthusiasts.

The silhouette of the 2011 Honda CR-Z is reminiscent of Honda’s much celebrated CR-X sport coupe in design and proportion, but with the underpinnings and powertrain are taken from Honda Insight. The questions remain however, which of these cars does the CR-Z try to emulate, and does it perform as good as it looks?

Exterior:

From no angle does the 2011 Honda CR-Z emanate your typical hybrid design. The sporty 2-passenger coupe shares structural architecture with Honda’s Fit and Insight, but is ultimately smaller than it’s platform relatives, measuring in at 160.6 inches long, 68.5 inches wide, and 54.9 inches tall.

The secret behind the ultra-sporty look is what Honda calls the ‘One-motion Wedge’ concept, which features an elongated and lowered hood-line coupled with a widened stance, all of which combines for the sleek nature of the vehicle’s body. Taking a design cue from the original ‘84 Honda CR-X, the rear of the car features Honda’s signature split-level glass hatch. While the split hatch offers a great look, it hinders the driver’s visibility.

There is a little doubt that Honda has succeeded in demonstrating that hybrids can in fact be attractive, and not relegated to the ‘eyesore’ category. The company has effectively shown that hybrids can be exciting, aggressive, and bold; aesthetically, this car definitely makes a statement without being shaped like a cheese wedge.

Interior:

Like the original CR-X and Insight, the 2011 Honda CR-Z is a two passenger car; definitely not a family vehicle. It does differ from the above however, and most other hybrids for that matter, in that it features an exciting interior with textured black materials and aluminum-style accents.

The upper portion of the dash engulfs the cabin, creating a decidedly cockpit feel, and the high-quality silver mesh sport seats provide excellent support, even for the larger driver. The most dazzling interior design element however, is the bright instrument panel mounted right behind the steering wheel; it sports a vibrant blue color pallet and three dimensional imaging, which combine for a multi-layered interface.

The interior build-quality is noteworthy, especially for a relatively affordable car. This is one area Honda has been struggling a bit with as of late, but Honda CR-Z has not fallen victim to the inconsistent nature of recent Honda interiors.

The rear-space in the cabin is well-utilized, as Honda has outfitted a large, two-compartment cargo console just behind the seats, offering a hidden storage space for your laptop, iPad, or any other on-the-go items one might carry. Nonetheless, the 2011 Honda CR-Z sports a mere maximum 25.1 cu-ft of cargo space.

The interior build-quality is noteworthy, especially for a relatively affordable car.

Depending on the trim model, the Honda CR-Z can offer some premium amenities, such as Bluetooth HandsFreeLink. Honda gave as a CR-Z EX to test for a week, and that came with a 360-watt AM/FM/CD high-powered audio system that featured seven speakers (including a subwoofer), Bluetooth HandsFreeLink, perforated leather-wrapped steering-wheel and shift knob, and Honda’s Satellite-Linked Navigation with voice recognition.

One thing this interior does really well is offer a visually engaging experience and versatile approach to interior space utilization that puts the driver front and center. To the left of the steering wheel sits a cluster of controls which allow the driver to change driving mode (Econ, Normal, Sport), activate traction control, and adjust the side-view mirrors. Climate, audi, and navigation controls are all housed in the center console which sits tilted toward the driver, effectuating convenient access. All of this puts the driver in close control of his instruments, while leaving the passenger seat open, spacious, and clutter-free.

Performance:

The exterior and interior designs of the Honda CR-Z wet your appetite for performance. Well, that’s where things get a little less exciting and that’s due to the lack of a turbo gasoline engine, something Honda enthusiasts are very much passionate about. However, we have to say, as a hybrid, the Honda CR-Z does have a little devilish side.

Even considering the hybrid nature of the powertrain, we can’t totally label the car as lacking a sporty factor.

As mentioned above, this car is powered by a similar gasoline-electric hybrid powertrain as the Insight, which means it carries the same 1.5L 4-cylinder, 16-valve i-VTEC gas engine and 10-kilowatt Nickel Metal Hydride battery pack. That makes for an output of 122-hp at 6,000 rpm and maximum torque of 128 lb-ft at 1,000 rpm when mated to the 6-speed manual. The CVT equipped models get 123 lb-ft between 1,000 and 2,000 rpm. That output gives the Honda CR-Z the ability to go from 0 to 60 mph in a tacit 9 seconds, and a top speed of 122 mph.

Even considering the hybrid nature of the powertrain, we can’t totally label the car as lacking a sporty factor. There is a lot to be said about it being the first ever hybrid to be offered with a 6-speed manual, as well as the variable drive modes mentioned above. When engaged in ‘Sport’ mode, much of the driving experience becomes enhanced; the engine throttle becomes more responsive, the steering firms up, and on the CVT equipped models, the transmission ratios are optimized to maintain higher RPMs and quicker acceleration. When driving in ‘Sport’ mode, we definitely felt the difference and had a lot more confidence when over-taking other drivers and jumping off the line. Obviously, we weren’t going to be sucked to the back of the seat, and we weren’t expecting to be, but we were blown away by the degree of which the orientation changes with ‘Sport’ mode engaged.

Being a hybrid, fuel-economy is essentially what matters most. The EPA estimates 35/39 mpg and a combined 37 when mated to the CVT. The sportier 6-speed manual equipped model brings those figures down to 31/37/34 mpg. Our test Honda CR-Z 6-speed manual managed to average 31 mpg during a week-long test but that’s mainly because we never engaged the ‘Econ’ mode and stayed mainly in ‘Sport’. The ‘Econ’ mode will alter the car’s orientation for better efficiency, with the electric motor assist and air condition system reducing overall load on the engine. An option that is will save your wallet some grief when filling up.

Overall:

The Honda CR-Z isn’t for everybody. That is not to say however, that it isn’t for anybody. While many will be thrown off by the lack of performance, many still will be attracted to a vehicle that let’s them mind Mother Nature, yet still exhibit a bit of a rebellious side.

Pricing starts at $19,345 for a 6-speed manual equipped model, and $19,995 for the CVT option. Those figures are pretty competitive for a hybrid that sports a little devilish side – emphasis on little. If you’re a single twenty-something who is environmentally conscious and into stylish rides, than the CR-Z is for you. If you’re married with kids and all the rest still applies, consider the Insight.

Last week, Honda confirmed that in-house tuner Mugen is working on a heavily tuned version of Honda’s new CR-Z hybrid hatchback, which will have Type R-like performance. According to Honda Research and Development chief Tomohiko Kawanabe, the company is also working on a high-performance CR-Z for the mass market. In an interview with AutoCar, Kawanabe admitted that development work on the more powerful two-door has begin and that it will keep its IMA hybrid system.

“It’s true: we are working on a more powerful CR-Z,” he said. “Our problem with the car as it stands is that it looks very good, but it doesn’t have the performance some customers expect.”

Click here for more news on the Honda CR-Z.

While there is no word on what engine the hotter CR-Z will use, the more powerful hybrid hatch is expected to use Honda’s next-geneation IMA hybrid system, which will debut on the next Civic Hybrid.

“The decision on the engine hasn’t been made,” he said. “Turbocharging is an option, but a high-compression petrol engine would work better in tandem with a hybrid assist system.”

Honda’s in-house tuner MUGEN in Europe and Honda UK are currently developing a heavily tuned version of Honda’s new CR-Z sport hybrid. Being prepared for a world debut at the Goodwood Festival of Speed in July, MUGEN Euro claims that the new model will deliver “Type R-like” performance with the potential of delivering better fuel economy.

The CR-Z MUGEN will have its 1.5L four-pot and the Honda IMA system enhanced to boost power and torque. The MUGEN will also feature a reworked suspension and brakes to improve chassis dynamics. Specific details pertaining to the enhancements to the powertrain have yet to be released.

Click here for more news on the Honda CR-Z.

Additionally, MUGEN will be adding some weight-saving materials such as a carbon fiber hood and special allow wheels to reduce unsprung mass. New fascias front and rear along with a new spoiler will help improve aerodynamics and aid in giving the CR-Z a sportier look.

“We wanted to extend the performance of the CR-Z,” says Hiro Toyoda of MUGEN Euro. “It is already a fun car to drive, with an excellent chassis, but we thought that with more power and enhanced torque delivery it could be even more exciting. However, as with all MUGEN projects, we have stayed true to the Honda design and philosophy, and the electric motor is still a vital ingredient to boost performance and economy.”

Why is Honda moving faster? Sales of the Honda CR-Z in the United States haven’t been as strong as Honda believed and buyer feedback on the hatchback has been so strong, that the firm is now speeding up the development on the faster CR-Z. It could debut in production form at the 2011 Tokyo Motor Show.

The Honda CR-Z so far is getting mixed reviews from many publications. While the Consumer Reports says it can’t even recommend the hybrid hatchback after giving it low ratings, Top Gear Magazine named the car it’s 2011 Green Car of the Year. Whatever the case may be, Honda has some big plans for the CR-Z in the future.

Following reports of a 4-cylinder turbo gasoline model, we hear today that Honda is working on a drop-top CR-Z. Apparently, the Honda CR-Z hatchback and the convertible CR-Z were developed side-by-side. Of course, being a convertible would mean that the drop-top CR-Z will be a heavier car. With that in mind, sources say engineers are considering a beefier 200-hp gasoline-electric combination seen in the Hybrid R Concept.

The model will end up being the world’s first convertible hybrid and will take some inspiration from the Honda Open Study Concept.

When can we expect to see a drop-top CR-Z? We’d say sometime after 2012.
