For the 2012 model year, Honda has dropped the Accord from the Accord Crosstour crossover making the official name of the car – the 2012 Honda Crosstour.

The 2012 Honda Crosstour is still available in two trim levels, the Crosstour EX and EX-L, with Real Time 4WD also available on the EX-L model. There is still no 4-cylinder option so power still comes from a 3.5 liter V6 making 271 horsepower at 6,200 RPM and 254 lb-ft. of torque at 5,000 RPM. No major gain in fuel-economy numbers so it still achieves 18/27/21 mpg (city/highway/combined) on 2WD models and 18/26/21 mpg on 4WD models.

So what’s new for the 2012 Honda Crosstour besides the name? It’s all summed up in this little paragraph right here:

“For 2012, new features on the Crosstour EX include auto on/off headlights, a rearviewcamera, Bluetooth HandsFreeLink and USB audio interface. Two new colors are also available on all Crosstour models: Twilight Blue Metallic replaces Glacier Blue Metallic, and Basque Red Pearl replaces Tango Red Pearl.”

Prices for the 2012 Honda Crosstour:

2012 Honda Crosstour 2WD EX: $30,340.

2012 Honda Crosstour 2WD EX-L: $32,990.

2012 Honda Crosstour 4WD EX-L: $36,540.

Press Release:

2012 Honda Crosstour Brings Sleek Design to Functional Crossover Vehicle

More standard features for 2012 include rearview camera, Bluetooth HandsFreeLink, USB audio interface and more

The 2012 Honda Crosstour approaches the crossover SUV formula from a distinctively sleek, sporty and fuel-efficient perspective while also maximizing the interior’s cargo capacity, versatility and premium feel.

The Crosstour’s exterior design emphasizes a bold, aerodynamic look that also conceals an accommodating rear cargo area with a large, lift-over tailgate. Premium interior styling, appointments and details extend from the passenger compartment all the way through the cargo area. An under-floor storage area in the rear of the vehicle adds functionality, while reversible cargo floor panels accommodate dirty objects.

The Crosstour is available in two trim levels, the Crosstour EX and EX-L, with Real Time™ 4WD also available on the EX-L model. For 2012, new features on the Crosstour EX include auto on/off headlights, a rearview camera, Bluetooth®1HandsFreeLink® and USB audio interface. Two new colors are also available on all Crosstour models: Twilight Blue Metallic replaces Glacier Blue Metallic, and Basque Red Pearl replaces Tango Red Pearl.

The Crosstour comes standard with a 3.5-liter i-VTEC V-6 engine with Variable Cylinder Management (VCM) for power and efficiency. The engine produces 271 horsepower at 6,200 RPM and 254 lb-ft. of torque at 5,000 RPM, while achieving an EPA-rated city/highway/combined fuel economy of 18/27/21 mpg2 on 2WD models. Meanwhile the Crosstour EX-L with Real Time™ 4WD delivers an EPA-rated city/highway/combined fuel economy rating of 18/26/21 mpg2.

To maximize efficiency, the engine’s VCM cylinder deactivation system is programmed to run on 3, 4 or 6 cylinders, based on current power requirements, and a technologically advanced 5-speed automatic transmission is standard equipment. For true utility-vehicle capability, the Crosstour provides 6.2 inches of maximum ground clearance in addition to the available Real Time™ 4WD system.

Besides its new-for-2012 auto on/off headlights, Bluetooth HandsFreeLink and USB audio interface, standard features on the Crosstour EX include projector-beam headlights, fog lights, 17-inch aluminum wheels with P225/65R17 all-season tires, a moonroof, body-colored power side mirrors with defrost, chrome door handles, auto up/down driver and front passenger side windows and rear privacy glass. Inside are dual-zone automatic air conditioning with second-row ventilation, a 360-watt AM/FM 6-disc audio system with seven speakers, steering wheel-integrated audio controls, a compass and outside temperature indicator, cruise control, an easy fold-down 60-40 split rear seatback, a hidden removable utility box and more.

Crosstour EX-L adds 18-inch aluminum wheels with P225/60R18 all-season tires, leather-trimmed seating surfaces with heated front seats, a memory driver-side seat and memory side mirrors with reverse tilting capability, a leather-wrapped steering wheel and gearshift knob, Kevlar® cone audio speakers, front aluminum dome-type tweeter speakers, an auto day/night dimming rearview mirror, a HomeLink™ transmitter and a cargo privacy cover.

The Honda Satellite-linked Navigation System3 and the Real Time™ 4WD mentioned above are available together or separately on the Crosstour EX-L. The Navigation system includes a rearview camera with guidance lines integrated into the display.

Safety technology includes the Advanced Compatibility Engineering™ (ACE™) body structure, a Honda-exclusive body design that enhances occupant protection and crash compatibility in frontal collisions. Additional safety equipment on the Crosstour includes Vehicle Stability Assist™ (VSA®), anti-lock brakes with electronic brake distribution and brake assist, side curtain airbags with a rollover sensor, driver’s and front passenger’s side airbags with passenger-side Occupant Position Detection System (OPDS), dual-stage, multiple-threshold front airbags, and active front seat head restraints.

The Crosstour is assembled in Ohio at the Honda of America Mfg., Inc., East Liberty Auto Plant using domestic and globally sourced parts.

At the 2010 Detroit Auto Show next week, Honda will unveil the 2012 Civic Concept. The next-generation Honda Civic will hit dealerships in late April. In a letter sent out to dealerships today, Honda revealed that a 2012 CR-V with an all-new 4-cylinder engine (which could be slightly larger than the 2.4L that powers the current model) will join the Civic in Spring 2011.

The email also states that a 4-cylinder version of the Honda Accord CrossTour will hit dealerships in mid-summer. No word on what the output ratings will be but we expect it to be only offered on the lower trim levels and FWD.

Make sure you join us next week as we bring you live images of the 2012 Honda Civic from our coverage of the 2011 Detroit Auto Show.

Earlier this week, Honda confirmed that it will kill the Element crossover due to sluggish sales. However, one other vehicle that is also returning sales below Honda’s expectations is the Accord Crosstour. Nonetheless, Honda has no plans to remove the new crossover from its lineup.

Through the end of November 2010, Honda has sold 25,927 units of the Accord Crosstour – meaning that it is unlikely to meet it’s sales goal of 30,000 units. Not to mention that the 30,000 target is a revision from the original target of 35,000.

“It’s still a work in progress,” said Chuck Schifsky, a Honda spokesman. “We’re not done yet in terms of building brand awareness.”

Honda has announced upgrades and prices for the 2011 Honda Accord Crosstour, which is currently arriving at dealerships nationwide. Upgrades for the 2011 model year include new climate control buttons, which are now positioned on the left side of the control stack, closer to the driver for ease-of-use. The less-frequently used buttons are now positioned on the right side – and as boring as that sounds, those are the only significant upgrades for 2011.

Power for the 2011 Honda Accord Crosstour still comes from a 3.5L i-VTEC V6 with Variable Cylinder Management. Output comes in at 271-hp with a peak torque of 254 lb-ft. EPA estimated fuel-economy comes in at 18/27/21 mpg (city/highway/combined) for 2WD models and 18/26/21 for the Accord Crosstour EX-L 4WD model.

The Accord Crosstour is available in two trim levels, the EX and EX-L with price starting at $29,790.

Press Release:

2011 Honda Accord Crosstour Offers Sleek Design with Surprising Utility

Premium and versatile crossover utility vehicle based on popular Accord

The 2011 Honda Accord Crosstour combines the sophisticated refinement of a premium sedan with versatile aspects of an SUV. Leveraging the many benefits of a car-based platform, the Accord Crosstour starts with the top-level refinement of the Accord V-6 Sedan and further expands utility with a sleek-yet-functional profile for increased cargo space.

A bold and sleek exterior conveys a prestigious presence from the outside, while premium interior styling extends from the passenger compartment into the cargo area. Increased functionality is provided by an under-floor storage area in the rear of the vehicle and reversible cargo floor panels for accommodating dirty objects. Cargo area access is further enhanced by a tailgate with a large opening and a low lift-over height.

New for 2011, the most frequently used climate control buttons are now positioned on the left side of the control stack, closer to the driver for ease-of-use. Less-frequently used buttons are now positioned on the right side.

All Accord Crosstour models come standard with a 3.5-liter i-VTEC V-6 engine with Variable Cylinder Management (VCM) for power and efficiency. The engine produces 271 horsepower at 6,200 RPM and 254 lb-ft. of torque at 5,000 RPM, while achieving an EPA-rated city/highway/combined fuel economy of 18/27/21 mpg1 on 2WD models. For 2011, the Accord Crosstour EX-L 4WD fuel economy improves by 1 mpg in city, highway and combined driving for a city/highway/combined EPA rating of 18/26/21.

The VCM cylinder deactivation system is programmed to run on 3, 4 or 6 cylinders, based on current power requirements. A technologically advanced 5-speed automatic transmission is standard equipment. For CUV capability, the Accord Crosstour provides ample ground clearance and Real Time™ 4WD drive is available.

The Accord Crosstour is available in two trim levels, the EX and EX-L. Highlights of standard features on the Accord Crosstour EX include: dual-zone automatic air conditioning with second-row ventilation, 360-Watt AM/FM 6-disc audio system with seven speakers, easy fold-down 60-40 split rear seat back, 17-inch aluminum wheels with 225/65 R17 all-season tires, hidden removable utility box, cruise control, moonroof, auto up/down driver and front passenger side windows, rear privacy glass, steering wheel-integrated audio controls, compass and outside temperature indicator, projector-beam headlights with auto-off, fog lights, chrome door handles, body-colored power side mirrors with defrost, and more.

The Accord Crosstour EX-L adds or upgrades: leather-trimmed seating surfaces with heated front seats, leather steering wheel, leather gear shift knob, auto day/night dimming rearview mirror, 18-inch aluminum wheels with 225/60 R18 all-season tires, auto on/off headlights, memory driver-side seats, memory side mirrors with reverse tilting capability, cargo privacy cover, HomeLink™ transmitter, cargo privacy cover, Kevlar® cone audio speakers, aluminum dome-type front tweeter speakers and a USB audio interface.

Available features exclusive to the Accord Crosstour EX-L include the Honda Satellite-linked Navigation System2 and Real Time 4WD, available together or separately. The navigation system includes a backup camera with guidance lines integrated into the display.

Safety technology includes the Advanced Compatibility Engineering™ (ACE™) body structure, a Honda-exclusive body design that enhances occupant protection and crash compatibility in frontal collisions. Additional safety equipment includes: Vehicle Stability Assist™ (VSA®), commonly referred to as Electronic Stability Control; anti-lock brakes with electronic brake distribution and brake assist; side curtain airbags with a rollover sensor; driver’s and front passenger’s side airbags with passenger-side Occupant Position Detection System (OPDS); dual-stage, multiple-threshold front airbags; and active front seat head restraints.

The Accord Crosstour is assembled in Ohio at the Honda of America Mfg., Inc., East Liberty Auto Plant using domestic and globally sourced parts.

Besides the bunch of Honda CR-Z’s on display at the 2010 SEMA Show this week in Las Vegas (we’ll bring you more later on today), Honda is also displaying a demonstration concept of the Honda Accord Crosstour.

There’s not much to say about the Accord Crosstour HFP Concept, but you have to admit, with a little bit of change the debatable shape of the Accord Crosstour can be put to rest.

The Honda Accord Crosstour HFP Concept features 19-inch HFP wheels, a full HFP body kit and front grille, a prototype lowered HFP sport suspension, color-matched door handles and special black-out door sash trim.

Personally, we enjoyed the Crosstour when we test-drove it back in July.

Honda announced that it will recall 3,336 2010 Honda Accord Crosstour models in the United States to inspect and possibly replace the front passenger airbag.

“Recent testing revealed that certain front passenger airbag modules installed in a limited number of 2010 Accord Crosstours do not meet one aspect of a U.S. federal regulation (FMVSS 208) that requires airbag deployment to be tested using an unbelted six year-old child-sized test dummy in the front seating area.”

Honda said that no incidents or injuries have been reported related to this issue. The company will be sending out notifications to owners starting Sept. 22, 2010. Owners can go to www.recalls.honda.com or call (800) 999-1009, and select option 4.

Come on – we know you guys love this boring recall news.

The 2010 Honda Accord Crosstour certainly has a design all its own. While the aesthetics are a tad awkward, this car possesses an air of sophisticated refinement. With its abundance of extra space and ground clearance, Honda”s first foray into the Crossover Utility Vehicle (CUV) segment offers considerable competition to the Toyota Venza, which is the ToMoCo’s Camry-based crossover.

While both vehicles offer much of the same comfort of their top-selling sedan counterparts (Toyota being based on the Camry and the Accord Crosstour being based on the Accord sedan), they also offer a tremendous deal of utility in that they both offer extra ground clearance, more cargo space, and all-wheel drive option.

Exterior:

Public reception of the earliest Crosstour pictures was less than warm. The community on Facebook, Twitter and other social networks said it was downright hideous and looked something similar to a Tyrannosaurs Rex. While we didn”t necessarily disagree with this sentiment, this car isn”t all that unattractive in person. The Crosstour represents the largest Accord model to date, and in many ways comes off as a wagon or hatchback variant of the Accord with a raised suspension. Such an observation is not entirely wrong.

While this car did evolve from the standard Accord, it shares no exterior panels with its evolutionary parent, and has a distinctly separate front-fascia design with its oversized grille. The 8.1″ underbody clearance and sloping rear-end which accommodates the hatch are the most noticeable differences, however.

The most important feature is not one that is apparent to the eye; the Crosstour is designed for a smooth and quiet driving experience, with a heavily insulated floor, doors, and firewall, and triple door-seal system to minimize wind and road noise. Strategically insulated rear-fender wells and active systems that work with engine and audio systems bolster the noise canceling features as well.

While the Crosstour may sound like something you want to stay away on paper, we said it earlier and we”ll say it again – this car is quite attractive in real life.

2010 Honda Accord Crosstour - Interior

Interior:

Given the nature of the car, the Crosstour is certainly going to have some marked differences from the standard Accord. The three main differences are the 51.3 cubic feet of cargo space (The Honda CR-V and Toyota Venza each have more than 70 cubic feet), 60/40 easy-fold rear seat, and more seating space. If none of those three features appeal to you, than we recommend you stop considering this car and opt instead for the standard Accord. Other than the aforementioned difference, the cabin to the Crosstour is very much like that of the Accord sedan, save for the better quality leather, quieter cabin, and seating for five.

Considering the starting MSRP of $29,670, the 2010 Accord Crosstour comes stock with plenty of options; dual-zone automatic climate control, steering-wheel-mounted audio and cruise controls, one-touch power moonroof, heated power side mirrors, 10-way adjustable power driver”s seat with power lumbar support, 4-way adjustable power front passenger seat, 360 watt audio system with in-dash 6-disc CD changer and MP3/AUX connectivity, and other bells and whistles.

For those who want to further outfit the interior of their Crosstour, there is always the EX-L package which adds; leather-trim heated seats, leather-wrapped steering wheel and shift knob, driver”s seat with 2-position memory, projector-beam halogen headlights with auto on/off functionality, USB Audi interface, XM Radio, Bluetooth connectivity, satellite-linked navigation with voice-recognition and rearview camera with guidelines.

Our favorite feature on the Crosstour was the hidden removable utility box in the cargo area under the floor. As the name implies, the box is easily removable via a collapsible arm , and features two interior dividers so that you can divvy up the 1.9 cubic feet of space within to your liking.

Overall, the interior definitely exudes a solid, rich, luxurious feel; far more than any other Accord.

2010 Honda Accord Crosstour - Powertrain

Performance:

The “10 Accord Crosstour draws its power from a 3.5-liter -VTEC V-6 engine with VCM. This equates to 271-hp and a maximum torque of 254 lb-ft; certainly an engine that delivers a punch when needed. We did however, find ourselves longing for a manual shift mode.

Mated to a 5-speed automatic transmission, the Accord Crosstour averages an EPA estimated 18/27 mpg, or 21 mpg combined rating. The 4WD option sees a drop in fuel economy to about 17/25 mpg, or 20 mpg combined. The AWD model that we tested averaged 16 mpg over our week-long drive. Another bonus; Honda recommends regular unleaded 87 octane fuel, so you won”t need that second mortgage just to cover a tank of gas.

When it comes to performance the Accord Crosstour runs from 0-60 mph in about 7.3 seconds, which is not that bad considering a curb weight of 3,852 lbs for the FWD model and 4,070 lbs for the AWD model. As we mentioned earlier, the Crosstour was designed to give a pleasurable touring experience. The fully independent design of the double-wishbone front and multi-link rear suspension that allows the tires to maintain great contact with the road.

The fully-automatic Real Time 4WD system is also designed to enhance all-weather and light-duty off-road performance when driving in most conditions. Nonetheless, keep in mind that ground clearance measures only 6-inches, much less than its competitors, so driving the Accord Crosstour in heavy snow may still require some labor.

2010 Honda Accord Crosstour - Rear End

Overall:

While there may be nothing about the 2010 Honda Accord Crosstour that makes us want to jump out of our seats and go buy one, especially when looking at the competition, it does do the whole crossover thing pretty well. Buyers in this segment aren’t looking to have aggressive fun behind the wheel or tow massive amounts of equipment. In terms of being a utility vehicle, the Honda Accord Crosstour is competent in that regard.

Prices for the 2010 Honda Accord start at $29,670 for the base 2WD EX model and top out at $36,220 for the Accord Crosstour 4WD EX-L with Navigation. When compared to its biggest rival, the Toyota Venza, which starts at $26,275 and tops out at $29,550 for the AWD V6, the Accord Crosstour has some tough competition. Not to mention, Toyota’s Venza also offers a FWD 4-cylinder option, which gets an EPA-rated fuel-economy of 21/29 mpg (city/highway).

At the end of the day, the face-off between these two may come down to brand loyalty.

Honda has been seeing a strong demand for its light trucks including the CR-V, Odyssey, Pilot, and Ridgeline.

“That seems to be growing for us and the industry. Demand seems to be stronger than the car side.” said Honda’s Executive VP John Mendel. Honda and Acura combined, posted a 33% gain in April when compared to April of 2009 in U.S. truck sales.

Total U.S. light-truck sales rose 24% in April, compared to 20% for all U.S. vehicles. Inventories have also been going down for both Honda and the industry as a whole. Having averaged a 47-day truck inventory as of March 1, Honda’s inventory has fallen to just 42-days as of April 1.

Despite Toyota’s incentive crazed ways as of late, Mendel said that Honda has a reputation for using minimal incentives, and that will continue. Don’t expect to see any 0 percent or cash back offers from Honda anytime soon.

Honda’s top U.S. executive said that the Japanese automaker may have to update its models faster because the competition is getting too tough in the mid-size sedan segment. John Mendel said that Honda will do its best to stay ahead of the pack with new models in new market segments and will updates its vehicles more frequently.

“We don’t have the gap that we had years ago,” Mendel said on at the launch of the new 2010 Honda Accord Crosstour. “There’s nobody out there building junk any more.”

The Honda Accord mid-size sedan is the company’s top-selling model and is facing some serious competition from Toyota, Nissan, FoMoCo and General Motors. All of its competitors offer 4-cylinder mid-size sedans that have passed the Accord in highway fuel-economy and have received positive reviews from the media.

Mendel said that Honda may have to offer a facelift for its models every two-years and a total redesign every five-years.

The Honda Accord is scheduled for a redesign by 2013; however, Mendel says that a redesigned model with better fuel-economy and more equipment could come quicker.

Honda today released interior images of the all-new and all-controversial 2010 Honda Accord Crosstour.

“The interior design is intended to enhance the feeling of width and space in the passenger cabin while creating a premium and accommodating atmosphere, says Honda. “The inset sculpting of the instrument panel along with a wide center console increases the sense of roominess.”

The 5-passenger interior features an innovative rear-storage area which creates an 8-inch deep under-floor Hidden Removable Utility Box with a reversible lid. Levers near the interior fender provide access from the tailgate opening, allowing for one-touch conversion of the seats into the floor for additional cargo space.

Power comes from a 3.5L V6 making 268-hp with a maximum torque of 248 lb-ft. The engine will be mated to a 5-speed automatic transmission. No 4-cylinder option will be offered for the 2010 Accord Crosstour.

Sales of the 2010 Honda Accord Crosstour will begin in November. Pricing details will be announced closer to launch.

Yesterday we told you about the not-so-nice reactions that the new Honda Accord Crosstour was generating on its own Facebook fan page. Apparently, in between yesterday and today Honda removed a comment made by their product development manager Eddie Okubo (who commented as a consumer saying the Crosstour was amazing rather than a Honda executive) and released an official statement in a response to all the negative comments about the Accord Crosstour.

Also, we decided to pick out our favorite comments on the Crosstour fan page from today (check them out after the jump).

Check out Honda’s official statement after the jump (believe us, it’s must read) along with our favorite comments from today.

Honda’s Official Statement to Facebook Fans:

Hi, Facebook fans. We’re listening, and we want to address a few things you’ve been talking about over the past few days.

The photos: Arguably, the two studio photos we posted didn’t give you enough detail, nor were they the best to showcase the vehicle. There are more photos on the way. Maybe it’s like a bad yearbook photo or something, and we think the new photos will clear things up.

It’s not the European wagon: We’ve seen a lot of comments about the desire for a wagon, but this is neither a wagon nor designed for wagon buyers. We think the Euro wagon is a cool vehicle, too, and we appreciate the feedback… but a version of that wasn’t our intention here. That’s another segment worthy of our consideration, but the Accord Crosstour, built on the larger, Accord platform, is meant to give you the best of two worlds – the versatility of an SUV with the sportiness of a car.

Many of you don’t like the styling: It may not be for everyone. Our research suggests that the styling does test well among people shopping for a crossover.

You want further details about the Accord Crosstour: We typically can’t give you details so far out from when the vehicle goes on sale for a number of reasons, including competitive intelligence and pure availability. However… we hear your frustrations, and while specs on the vehicle aren’t finalized, we’re trying to get some stuff together that we hope will satiate some of your curiosity and give you more to think about.

Honda associates participating in the wall comments: We didn’t remove comments out of embarrassment. We removed comments that were posted contrary to American Honda’s consumer-generated media policy for associates: We must first clearly state that we are Honda employees and that a posting is a personal – not Honda’s – opinion. Eddie forgot to add that, so his comments were removed.

Thank you for all of the interest, and we’ll be in touch again soon…

After all the spy shots and all the teasers, we’ve been eager to see what the 2010 Honda Accord Crosstour looks like. We were all very excited to countdown to Sept. 1 and have Honda release a bunch of details and a bunch of high-res photos for our viewing pleasure.

While Honda did reveal the 2010 Accord Crosstour today, however (and very disappointingly), they did not give us any technical specs and only released two high-res photos (yes, the interior remains a mystery).

The 2010 Honda Accord Crosstour will be the range-topping model in the Accord family. It will go on sale in fall 2009. We’ll have more details and photos for you as soon as we get them.

Follow the jump for the press release.

Press Release:

2010 Accord Crosstour Styling Conceals Surprising Versatility

Next evolution of the crossover offers CUV attributes while maintaining a premium sedan feel and a sporty, bold appearance

09/01/2009 – TORRANCE, Calif. - The all-new 2010 Honda Accord Crosstour evolves the Crossover Utility Vehicle (CUV) concept by integrating a sleek and aerodynamic shape that blends sporty, low-profile contours with versatile CUV functionality, American Honda Motor Co., Inc., announced today.

“Our concept is to broaden the appeal of the Accord line-up by leveraging traditional Accord strengths of fun-to-drive performance and handling while also adapting to dramatic shifts in the light truck marketplace,” said Erik Berkman, vice president of American Honda Motor Co., Inc. “The Accord Crosstour accomplishes that by offering a modern interpretation of a CUV while integrating the refinement and efficiency of a premium sedan.”

Derived from the Accord Sedan, the Accord Crosstour maximizes car-like ride and refinement, yet maintains capabilities consistent with a CUV’s increased ride height and all-weather potential. The Accord Crosstour’s styling builds on the Accord’s familiar character lines and adds a bolder front grille complemented by a durable lower-body appearance, wedge-shaped C-pillars and an aggressive rear stance. The flowing roofline narrows smoothly into the rear of the vehicle to create an aggressive-looking design, which conceals a unique cargo area that can adapt to large objects that exceed the capacity of a sedan.

“We know SUV buyers like the commanding view of the road that comes with a high eye-point and like the comforts of living with an SUV,” said Berkman. “This vehicle meets the needs of buyers looking for those attributes yet at the same time want an image that is different from a conventional SUV.”

The Accord Crosstour will be positioned at the top of the Accord family when it goes on sale in fall 2009. Additional details will be announced later in the year.

Honda will officially take the wraps off of its Toyota Venza competitor on September 1st. Sales will begin in fall 2009.
