American Suzuki Motor Corp. is in a very sticky situation. A Missouri jury has ordered the company to pay one of its dealers in Kansas City about $18.5 million after finding the automaker liable for negative publicity that damaged the dealer’s business.

The circuit court jury in Jackson County, Mo., has ordered American Suzuki to pay Jeremy Franklin, president of Jeremy Franklin Suzuki, a total of $3.5 million and punitive damages of $15 million.

How did this happen? Apparently, Jeremy Franklin’s brother, Chad Franklin, owns a separate Suzuki dealer that promised its customers no payment for life when they purchased a new Suzuki. Obviously that scheme flopped and a range of lawsuits and negative publicity started to hurt Jeremy Franklin’s dealer, who did not participate in the ‘no payment for life’ deal.

“We see this verdict as a vindication of our commitment to continue to serve our customers and our persistent efforts to grow our business despite all of the confusion,” Jeremy Franklin said in a statement. “We look forward to moving on and rebuilding trust in the Suzuki brand name in Kansas City.”

Jeff Holland, a spokesman for American Suzuki, said that the automaker is ‘disappointed’ by the verdict and will appeal.

FoMoCo is planning on rolling out at least 20 new or upgraded models in Europe over the next three years as part of a way to boost sales in the region. The move will add ‘several hundred’ jobs at a plant in Valencia, Spain, and 200 positions at two factories in Germany to underpin production plans.

The next-generation Ford Transit Connect and Ford Kuga are planned to be built at Ford’s assembly plant in Valencia, Spain. Ford’s plant in Saarlouis, Germany, which recently started production of the all-new Ford Focus, will build the Focus Electric from 2012. In the future, the plant also will build the next-generation Ford Focus, which follows the current model. Ford’s plant in Cologne, Germany, will build a freshened version of the Ford Fiesta that goes into production next year. The plant will also produce the 1.0-liter EcoBoost engine later this year. Ford’s plant in Craiova, Romania, will build the all-new Ford B-MAX from early 2012 and also will manufacture a second B-segment vehicle in the future.

“We’ve come through the worst of the economic crisis as a strong and profitable company, and we have a full pipeline of exciting vehicles coming to market,” said Stephen Odell, chairman and CEO, Ford of Europe, who announced the moves by Ford at a news conference in Valencia, Spain. “Now we are taking the right actions to grow profitably in Europe.

Ford said that assembly plants in Valencia, Spain, and Saarlouis, Germany, will be dedicated to manufacturing C-segment vehicles, while Ford’s operations in Cologne, Germany and Craiova, Romania, will build B-segment vehicles and small fuel-efficient EcoBoost engines.

Press Release:

FORD TRANSIT CONNECT TAXIS TO HIT THE STREETS OF CHICAGO AND RUN ON CLEAN-BURNING NATURAL GAS

First Ford Transit Connect Taxis to be delivered in March to one of the largest cab companies in Chicago

Vehicles will run on clean-burning compressed natural gas (CNG), which cuts back on greenhouse emissions

Vehicles include more room for passengers and new features for drivers such as the rear view camera

DEARBORN, Mich., Jan. 21, 2011 – Ford Transit Connect Taxis will begin winding through the streets of the Windy City in March when a fleet of the alternative-fuel vehicles joins Yellow Cab Chicago.

Taxi Medallion Management purchased the 12 clean-burning compressed natural gas (CNG) Transit Connect Taxis for its fleet. The cabs will be affiliated with Yellow Cab Chicago and bear the company’s logo and color.

The purchase is part of the company’s goal of reducing emissions by 25 percent, said Michael Levine, CEO of Taxi Medallion Management. According to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, CNG is less expensive and burns cleaner than gasoline, resulting in 30 to 40 percent less greenhouse gas emissions.

The Ford dealership, Packey Webb Ford, of Downers Grove, Ill., will deliver the taxi units to Taxi Medallion Management with an engine preparation package for conversion to CNG.

Since introduced as a production vehicle last year, Transit Connect Taxi is gaining interest from taxi operators around the country. The first taxi was delivered to Boston Cab Dispatch in December 2010.

“During product development of this vehicle, we visited cities across the U.S. speaking with taxi owners, operators, drivers and city officials on the key product attributes they wanted in a taxi,” said Gerald Koss, Ford Fleet marketing manager. “Of course reliability and durability were key, but fuel-efficient powertrains and sustainable solutions also were high on their lists.”

The Transit Connect Taxi package adds comfort for the passenger with a repositioned second-row seat for more legroom, grab handles and a rear ventilation system with passenger controls. For the driver, in addition to the comfortable driving environment, new features include rear view camera and back-up sensor, heavy-duty battery and wiring block connector to power upfitted accessories. The taxis have a 39-foot turning radius that provides excellent driving dynamics and takes the hassle out of tight spots.

The standard Ford Transit Connect – 2010 North American Truck of the Year – features a 2.0-liter I-4 engine that gets EPA-estimated 21 mpg city and 26 mpg highway, an estimated 30 percent improvement in fuel economy compared with traditional taxis.

In addition to CNG, Transit Connect Taxi is available with an engine preparation package for conversion to liquefied propane gas (LPG). Both CNG and LPG lower taxi fleets’ operating costs and are better for the environment.

During its first full year of production, 27,405 Transit Connect vehicles were sold in the United States. Demand for Transit Connect continues to grow as evidenced by the 41 percent year-over-year increase in sales for December 2010.

In addition, several organizations with large fleets purchased Transit Connects including Best Buy, Edible Arrangements, ThyssenKrupp Elevator and DTE Energy.

Press Release:

FORD AND AZURE DYNAMICS MARK PRODUCTION AND DELIVERY OF FIRST TRANSIT CONNECT ELECTRICS

Ford Motor Company and Azure Dynamics mark early production and first deliveries of Transit Connect Electric vans to early customers

Some initial units of the Transit Connect Electric commercial van are headed to the United Kingdom as part of the government’s Ultra-Low Carbon Vehicle Demonstrator program

The all-electric, zero-emission Transit Connect Electric has a targeted range of up to 80 miles per full charge, and is ideal for fleet owners with well-defined routes of predictable distances and a central location for daily recharging

The Transit Connect Electric is the first of five new electrified vehicles Ford will bring to market in the next two years including the Focus Electric, two next-generation hybrids and a plug-in hybrid

DEARBORN, Mich., Dec. 7, 2010 – Ford Motor Company and Azure Dynamics have begun shipping the first Ford Transit Connect Electrics to early customers in North America and to the United Kingdom for a demonstration project.

The all-electric commercial vans, built on the Ford Transit Connect vehicle body, equipped with Azure Dynamics’ patented Force Drive™ battery electric powertrain, and assembled by AM General at its facility in Livonia, Mich., are reaching the market 13 months after the collaboration to develop the zero-emission vehicle was first announced.

To date, all initial units have designated customers. Azure Dynamics’ LEAD customer program includes seven companies that are taking delivery of their first units in 2010, with the remainder of their orders to be filled in 2011. Customers that have been previously announced include AT&T, Southern California Edison, Xcel Energy, Johnson Controls Inc., New York Power Authority, Canada Post and Toronto Atmospheric Fund EV300. Additional LEAD customers will be identified by the end of the year.

Ford first announced the collaboration in October 2009, with an agreement for Azure Dynamics to upfit the Transit Connect van with Azure’s Force Drive battery electric drivetrain technology including Johnson Controls-Saft’s advanced lithium-ion battery, and a commitment to deliver the initial vehicles by the end of 2010 to the North American market. Initial production began in the fourth quarter of 2010 with full production of the Transit Connect Electric slated to ramp up in April 2011.

“The Transit Connect Electric program is a great representation of our product development approach,” said Scott Harrison, CEO, Azure Dynamics. “We have been able to focus on integration of our Force Drive powertrain solution and benefit from Ford’s expertise in building ground-up global vehicle platforms. Meanwhile, capital costs are kept in check by contracting AM General for labor and assembly services – an area where the company excels. Transit Connect Electric is a revolutionary technology and achieving our aggressive time line is a testament to the professionalism and spirit of cooperation among all the project partners.”

The Michigan Economic Development Corporation provided incentive funding for Azure Dynamics to encourage selection of a Michigan-based partner for final assembly. Azure chose AM General LLC, to produce the Transit Connect Electric in its facility in Livonia, Mich.

AM General, a long-established contract vehicle assembler and services provider, is responsible for final upfit of the Transit Connect Electric.

Transit Connect Electric is the first product in Ford’s accelerated electrified vehicle plan, and will be followed by the Focus Electric passenger car in 2011, along with a plug-in hybrid electric and two next-generation lithium-ion battery-powered hybrid vehicles in 2012.

Ultra-Low Carbon Vehicle Demonstrator program
In addition to delivery of units to LEAD customers in North America, the Transit Connect Electric commercial van is headed to the United Kingdom, where 14 of the vehicles will take part in the government’s Ultra-Low Carbon Vehicle Demonstrator program. The program, supported by Scottish and Southern Energy, utilizes a fleet of zero-emissions vehicles for the energy company, with designated drivers to test vehicle and infrastructure technology.

The consortium of Ford, Scottish and Southern Energy and the University of Strathclyde will provide Transit Connect Electric vehicles and a charging infrastructure in and around the London suburb of Hillingdon during 2010 and 2011.

Ford and Azure Dynamics already have announced they will collaborate to produce the Transit Connect Electric for the European market with first units to be delivered in 2011.

Designed with fleet users in mind
The all-electric, zero-emissions Transit Connect Electric has a driving range of up to 80 miles per full charge and is ideal for fleet owners who have well-defined routes of predictable distances and a central location for daily recharging. Delivery fleet and utility vehicle operators have begun to show a preference for smaller, more efficient vehicles, which creates an ideal time for Transit Connect Electric to come to market.

“The Transit Connect provides a unique choice for the fleet owner who wants the convenience of a utility vehicle,” Marakby said. “The electric version takes that one step further, delivering a dependable, zero-tailpipe-emission vehicle that requires no petroleum.”

Owners will have the option of recharging Transit Connect Electric with either a standard 120-volt outlet, or preferably a 240-volt charge station, typically installed at the user’s base of operations for optimal recharging in six to eight hours. A transportable cord that works with both types of outlets will be available for convenient recharging at either voltage.

The vehicle’s charge port is located above the passenger-side rear wheel well. The onboard liquid-cooled 28-kilowatt-hour lithium-ion battery pack is charged by connecting the charge port to a power outlet. Inside the vehicle, an onboard charger converts AC power from the electric grid to DC power to charge the battery pack.

Transit Connect Electric is expected to offer lower cost of operation, because charging with electricity is generally less expensive than fueling with gasoline.

When the vehicle is operating, battery power is provided to the drive motor through the electric powertrain’s motor controller. The motor controller uses throttle input from the driver to convert DC power supplied by the battery into three precisely timed signals used to drive the motor. The onboard DC/DC converter allows the vehicle’s main battery pack to charge the onboard 12-volt battery, which powers the vehicle’s various accessories, such as headlights, power steering and coolant pumps.

In Transit Connect Electric, the battery pack has been efficiently integrated without compromising interior passenger room and cargo space. The Johnson Controls-Saft battery pack is expected to last the life of the vehicle.

First in Ford’s overall electrified vehicle strategy
The electrification strategy builds on Ford’s vision for bringing affordable technology to millions. It takes advantage of rapid advancements in electrified vehicle technology – particularly lithium-ion batteries – while leveraging the scale of global vehicle platforms to bring the cost of new technology down.

FIRST FORD TRANSIT CONNECT TAXI DELIVERED TO BOSTON CAB COMPANY AT NEW ENGLAND AUTO SHOW

First Ford Transit Connect Taxi in the U.S. arrives in Boston

Boston Cab Dispatch receives keys at New England International Auto Show

The Transit Connect Taxi offers features designed specifically for the taxi industry, including an expanded second-row passenger space, a CNG/LPG engine prep package and rear view camera and back-up sensor

BOSTON, Dec.1, 2010 – The first Ford Transit Connect Taxi in the United States was delivered today to Boston Cab Dispatch at the New England International Auto Show.

Brett Barenholtz, CEO of Boston Cab Dispatch, received the keys to the Transit Connect Taxi and said he is eager to put it into service.

Sentry Ford in Medford, Mass., is the delivering dealer, working with Boston Cab Dispatch to integrate Transit Connect into the cab company’s fleet.

The taxi was outfitted by Creative Mobile Technologies of Long Island City, N.Y., which provides equipment such as payment processing and passenger information systems in the taxi, including an 8.4-inch electronic infotainment and navigation screen that shows cab fares, news, weather, sports scores and stock ticker. “CMT is thrilled to combine state-of-the-art technology with a next-generation taxi platform like Transit Connect,” said Jesse Davis, president of CMT.

Transit Connect Taxis also are on their way to other New England taxi companies. George Summers, president of USA Taxi, has added a Transit Connect to his Boston fleet. And two Connecticut operators, Bill Scalzi, president of Metro Taxi in West Haven, Conn., and Marco Henry, president of The Yellow Cab Company in Bloomfield, Conn., have ordered compressed natural gas (CNG) versions of the Transit Connect Taxi for their fleets.

“We’ve always driven Ford vehicles, Crown Vics and Escape Hybrids” said Summers. “Now, we’re adding the Transit Connect Taxi. It has great dimensions and fuel efficiency that will work well on the road.” Stoneham Ford in Stoneham, Mass., is the delivering dealer for USA Taxi.

In April, the Licensing Division of the Boston Police Department approved Transit Connect for taxi use, making Boston the first city in the country to do so. To be approved, the vehicle had to meet basic size requirements for passenger headroom, legroom and cargo space.

“Transit Connect fits the bill,” said Mark Cohen, Licensing Division director. “The size, shape and configuration of this unique vehicle make it comfortable for both driver and passengers.”

While the small perimeter dimensions and tall shape of Transit Connect make it easy for drivers to maneuver and park, the standard 2.0-liter I-4 engine gets 21 mpg city and 26 mpg highway mpg, an estimated 30 percent improvement in fuel economy versus traditional V8-powered sedan-based taxis.

Furthermore, Transit Connect Taxi is available with an engine preparation package for conversion to compressed natural gas (CNG) and liquefied propane gas (LPG).

The Transit Connect Taxi package adds comfort for the passenger with a repositioned second-row seat for more legroom, grab handles and rear air conditioning/heat vent with passenger controls. For the taxi driver, new features include rear view camera and back-up sensor, heavy-duty battery and a wiring block connector to power upfitted accessories.

“We’re excited to see Transit Connect Taxi in service in Boston,” said Kevin Koswick, director of Ford’s North American Fleet Operations. “Ford is committed to offering new solutions and maintaining our leadership as America’s No. 1 taxi provider.”

Transit Connect Taxi package vehicles are now available for order.

Press Release:

MICHIGAN GOV. GRANHOLM HAILS COLLABORATION BY FORD, AZURE DYNAMICS, JOHNSON CONTROLS-SAFT AND AM GENERAL TO DELIVER NEW FORD TRANSIT CONNECT ELECTRIC

Michigan Gov. Jennifer M. Granholm cites collaboration as key to production of the Ford Transit Connect Electric and creation of new green jobs in the state

Johnson Controls joins Transit Connect Electric Lead customer program with 20-unit order; begins lithium-ion battery pack shipments to Azure from its new Michigan facility

Collaboration further establishes Michigan as a center for electric vehicle development

Transit Connect Electric comes to market in 2010 – aimed primarily at fleet customers

OAK PARK, MI, September 22, 2010 ““ Michigan Gov. Jennifer M. Granholm drove one of the first Ford Transit Connect Electric small commercial vans in Oak Park, MI, today, citing collaboration between four companies as the key to delivering the zero-emissions vehicle to market. Granholm also cited government funding as a significant catalyst to creating new green jobs in Michigan.

The companies ““ Azure Dynamics, Ford Motor Company, Johnson Controls and AM General ““ demonstrated their new product, the Ford Transit Connect Electric, at Azure”s Oak Park headquarters.

“We”ve been working to grow clean energy manufacturing in Michigan to diversify the state”s economy and create jobs,” Granholm said. “The Transit Connect Electric is a prime example of the public and private sectors collaborating to invest in clean energy technologies that lead to new jobs for Michigan workers.”

The government provided funding through the federal Department of Energy and the Michigan Economic Development Council to support development and production of the new battery electric vehicle. As a result, program partners have all added significant jobs to their employee base for development and production of the vehicle and Johnson Controls-Saft has opened a $220 million li-ion battery plant in Holland, MI to produce the batteries.

To create the Transit Connect Electric, Ford ships a vehicle body or “glider” to AM General”s assembly facility in Livonia, MI. Azure Dynamics then integrates its ForceDrive™ electric drivetrain into the Ford Transit Connect body. The ForceDrive™ electric powertrain utilizes an advanced lithium-ion battery built in Holland, by Johnson Controls-Saft. Completed vehicles will be shipped directly to customers throughout North America.

“Electrified vehicles are a key part of our plan to offer a portfolio of green vehicles for retail and fleet customers, and we are building a center of excellence here in Michigan to develop and produce those vehicles,” said Nancy Gioia, Ford director of Global Electrification. “The collaboration we share with our suppliers on the Transit Connect Electric is a critical component in our delivery of the first of five new electrified vehicles we are bringing to market within the next two years, including hybrids, pure battery electrics and plug-in hybrids.”

The Ford Transit Connect Electric can achieve a range of up to 80 miles on a single charge and has a top speed of 75 mph. The battery is rechargeable using either a 240-volt or standard 120-volt outlet. Commercial vans are considered excellent candidates for electrification because they generally drive predictable short-range routes and return to a central location at the end of the drive cycle for convenient overnight recharging. The Ford Transit Connect Electric would totally eliminate gas costs.

“We are thrilled to be part of this collaboration,” said Azure Dynamics CEO Scott Harrison. “Our partners in this collaboration are all proven, dependable companies who can help us ensure on-time deliveries of proven, dependable products that will help our mutual customers achieve their environmental goals. Today, we are also pleased to announce that one of our partners has also become one of our customers, demonstrating their confidence in this product.”

In addition to Granholm”s visit, Johnson Controls announced it has become a new lead customer for Azure Dynamics, ordering 20 Transit Connect Electric vans. The lead program was developed by Azure to deliver an exclusive supply of 2010 Transit Connect Electric vehicles to the first 10 customers in the fourth quarter of this year.

Johnson Controls” new battery plant in Holland is now making initial lithium-ion battery pack shipments to Azure. The plant is among the first fully dedicated li-ion automotive battery facilities in the world and was made possible in part by a $299 million matching grant through the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act along with $168.5 million in incentives from the state of Michigan.

“The stimulus grant and the state of Michigan incentives substantially changed our manufacturing footprint expansion,” said Mary Ann Wright, vice president for Technology and Innovation at Johnson Controls. “Without these incentives, we would not have come to the United States. As a result, we are here today ““ less than 10 months since receiving the grant ““ shipping batteries from our manufacturing line in Holland, MI that are making their way into real vehicles for real customers.”

The Transit Connect Electric will be produced by AM General at a facility in Livonia.

“It is no accident that AM General”s Engineering and Product Development Center is located in Livonia. Our more than 500 highly skilled workers provide design and engineering expertise for some of the most advanced military and commercial specialty vehicles in the world,” said Rick Smith, president of AM General Commercial Business. “We benefit tremendously from the abundant experience base, significant infrastructure and higher education resources that Michigan provides.”

FORD TRANSIT CONNECT AND FORD E-SERIES VANS JOIN BEST BUY GEEK SQUAD FLEET

The Ford Transit Connect and Ford E-Series vans are joining Geek Squad as part of Best Buy”s ongoing efforts to build a more fuel-efficient fleet

290 Ford Transit Connect compact utility vans will be used instead of larger cargo vans by Geek Squad technicians who service home appliances

Best Buy also is taking delivery of 738 Ford E-Series vans, which will be used by Geek Squad technicians who install and service home theater equipment; the E-Series vans have smaller displacement engines, which provide better fuel economy than their current vans with larger engines

DEARBORN, Mich., Aug. 26, 2010 ““ The Ford Transit Connect and Ford E-Series van are joining Geek Squad as part of Best Buy”s continuing efforts to build a more fuel-efficient fleet and streamlined transportation system.

Best Buy® ““ an international leader in consumer electronics and entertainment ““ will soon take delivery of 290 Ford Transit Connect compact utility vans and 738 Ford E-Series vans. The Transit Connects will be used instead of larger cargo vans by Geek Squad technicians who deliver, install and service home appliances. The E-Series vans will be used by those who install and service home theater equipment.

Ford Transit Connect provides utility and fuel efficiency

According to Jason Pucely, senior manager, Best Buy Fleet Operations, the selection of the Ford Transit Connect was dictated in many ways by the company”s new operating model, which drives to deliver superior client service through more efficient scheduling, inventory management and transportation systems.

“We”re streamlining all of our activities,” he explained. “We”ve developed a more effective routing system, and we”re more efficient with the tools and parts we carry when we do our work. That has enabled us to put the same technician doing the same work in a smaller, lighter vehicle.”

Pucely says the Ford Transit Connect offers the functionality Geek Squad technicians require to get their work done, while not compromising on some of the space requirements that a full-size cargo van offers.

In addition to the cost and environmental benefits, Pucely foresees other advantages.

“Our technicians typically carry diagnostic equipment, motors and other electronic parts, so having the side access panels will make it easier for them to get to the equipment they need,” he said.

The unique appearance of the Ford Transit Connect promises to be an added bonus, says Pucely.

“A distinctive vehicle has been part of the history of Geek Squad in the marketplace,” he said. “We value our fleet as a tool to enhance our brand messaging, and the Transit Connect will certainly help in that effort.”

All of the vehicles will carry the familiar Geek Squad branding ““ black-and-white with the orange-and-black Geek Squad logo.

Ford E-Series vans provide functionality and improved fuel efficiency for larger jobs
While Ford Transit Connect provides an ideal solution for Geek Squad technicians who service home appliances, a full-size cargo van is essential for those who install and service home theater equipment. With fuel efficiency a priority, Best Buy opted to purchase 738 Ford E-Series vans with smaller ““ 4.6-liter ““ displacement V8 engines that provide better fuel economy than its current vans with larger engines.

“Home theater equipment is large, and it requires the space of a full-size van,” said Pucely. “But our technicians can do the same amount of work using a vehicle with a smaller engine, which is less expensive to run and burns less fuel.”

Ford Motor Company and Best Buy: Teaming up in other ways
Ford recently teamed up with Best Buy to ensure consumers have a great experience learning about and using Ford industry-leading SYNC® system. Best Buy Mobile offers thousands of specially trained associates to assist with Ford SYNC mobile device/phone compatibility and basic feature setup, and SYNC training for consumers.

Best Buy also includes Ford SYNC mobile device/phone compatibility results in its monthly Best Buy Mobile Buyer”s Guide to identify which of the latest mobile devices work seamlessly with Ford SYNC. The ratings are based on phone compatibility tests conducted by Best Buy”s Geek Squad and are updated frequently. The SYNC ratings also can be found at www.syncmyride.com.

In addition, Best Buy is the primary sponsor of the No. 43 Best Buy/Insignia Ford Fusion of Richard Petty Motorsports in the NASCAR Sprint Cup series. The Fusion is driven by A.J. Allmendinger. In August, Best Buy and Ford will launch a national sweepstakes focused around the all-new 2011 Ford Fiesta, the Insignia television brand, Richard Petty, Allmendinger and Ford”s Rally America and X Games Fiesta driver Ken Block.

The recalls keep on coming; FoMoCo is recalling 33,700 of its Transit Connect small commercial vans because of an interior liner issue, and Chrysler said it is recalling certain 2010 SUVs and trucks over a possible brake fluid leak.

Ford is recalling Transit Connects sold in the U.S. and built between December 2008 and May 2010. An interior liner in the vehicle fails to meet safety requirements for head protection. “In the event of a vehicle crash, an occupant could be at increased risk of injury,” the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) said on Friday in a letter to Ford.

Ford notified the NHTSA that it would tell dealers to stop delivering affected vehicles until it could correct the issue.

In a separate matter, Chrysler is recalling certain 2010 Jeep Liberty and Wrangler models, and the Dodge Nitro and Ram 1500 trucks made in the U.S. that may have been built with an improperly formed tube that could cause brake fluid to leak. Chrysler is also halting sales of affected vehicles until the issue can be properly addressed.

Azure Dynamics Corporation and FoMoCo said yesterday that they have picked AM General LLC, best known as the maker of military Humvees and Hummers, to handle the final assembly of the Ford Transit Connect Electric, the all-electric version of the award winning Transit Connect.

Ford will ship engine-less Transit Connect units from its factory in Turkey to AM General in Michigan, where workers will install Azure Dynamic’s electric-powertrain. As a part of the project Azure Dynamics, also based in Michigan, won a $1.3 million state tax credit, which will create an estimated 83 jobs. The current production plan includes an initial quantity of vehicles to be built in late 2010 with full production scheduled to begin in April 2011.

Apparently, this isn’t the first time AM General has worked on an electric-vehicle project. In 1975, it made 350 electric Jeeps for the U.S. Postal Service

FoMoCo announced today that the city of Boston became the first municipality in the United States to approve its new 2011 Ford Transit Connect Taxi for the city streets.

“The size, shape and configuration of the Transit Connect make it comfortable for both driver and passengers,” said Mark Cohen, director, Licensing Division, Boston Police Department. “When the Ford Crown Victoria goes out of production next year the taxi industry here in Boston and throughout the country is going to be looking for alternatives. I think the Transit Connect Taxi fits the bill.”

The 2011 Ford Transit Connect Taxi is powered by a 2.0L 4-cylinder engine mated to an automatic transmission. Ford points out that in that form, Transit Connect is expected to deliver an estimated 30 percent improvement in fuel economy versus many of today’s traditional taxis. Ford is also offering a new engine prep packages that allow conversions to both compressed natural gas (CNG) and liquefied propane gas (LPG).

Pending approval, the Transit Connect Taxi will start popping up in a city near you by the end of this year.

Press Release:

BOSTON: FORD TRANSIT CONNECT TAXI ‘FITS THE BILL’; BECOMES FIRST CITY TO APPROVE VERSATILE NEW CAB

* The city of Boston says Ford Transit Connect Taxi “fits the bill” as a taxicab, becoming the nation’s first municipality to green-light the new taxis
* Boston paves the way for its taxi owners and operators to put the purpose-built Transit Connect Taxi on its streets later this year
* Transit Connect Taxi was designed for passenger comfort, driver convenience and efficiency; the gas-powered version is expected to deliver an estimated 30 percent improvement in fuel economy over many traditional taxis

BOSTON, April 30, 2010 ““ Saying the 2011 Ford Transit Connect Taxi “fits the bill,” the city of Boston this week became the first municipality in America to approve the versatile cab for taxi use, paving the way for taxi owners to purchase the new vehicle for their fleets.

“We’re very impressed with the Transit Connect,” said Mark Cohen, director, Licensing Division, Boston Police Department. “It’s the closest thing to a purpose-built vehicle for taxi use that I’ve seen in 25 years.”

Boston, the 10th largest metropolitan area in the United States, regulates which types of vehicles can be used as taxicabs in its city streets. To be approved for taxi use, a vehicle must meet basic size requirements for headroom, legroom and cargo space.

The roomy, flexible interior of the Transit Connect ““ 2010 North American Truck of the Year ““ is perfectly suited for taxi service. Its open architecture provides excellent interior headroom and passenger visibility and, with 6.5 inches of ground clearance, passengers step easily through the sliding doors.

With its standard 2.0-liter four-cylinder gas engine and automatic transmission, the conventionally powered Transit Connect is expected to deliver an estimated 30 percent improvement in fuel economy versus many of today’s traditional taxis.

Because taxi operators also asked for a version that runs on alternative fuels, Ford is offering new engine prep packages that allow conversions to both compressed natural gas (CNG) and liquefied propane gas (LPG).

“The vehicle’s cargo area easily accommodates CNG tanks directly behind the second-row seat, still allowing ample luggage storage,” said Gerald Koss, Ford fleet marketing manager.

Both CNG and LPG lower taxi fleets’ operating costs and are better for the environment. According to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, CNG is less expensive and burns cleaner than gasoline, resulting in 30 to 40 percent less greenhouse gas emissions. Propane also burns cleaner than gasoline.

Built on a dedicated commercial vehicle platform tested to meet Ford’s light commercial vehicle durability standards, Ford’s new Transit Connect Taxi also features a wiring upfit package, vinyl flooring and standard third-row windows ““ all of which are factory-installed.

“We really tailored the vehicle to provide comfort and convenience for both driver and passengers,” said Chief Engineer Rob Stevens.

He and Koss spent a good part of 2009 taking the Transit Connect Taxi concept to taxi owners and operators in major markets across the United States, gaining valuable feedback that helped Ford further refine the taxi.

“We moved the rear seat back three inches, added a grab handle for passengers to get in and out of the vehicle, and we installed a ventilation unit to heat and cool the second row,” said Stevens. “We also added vinyl seats, which taxi operators said they wanted because of their durability.”

Technology on the go
Ford ““ the industry leader in the taxi business for decades with the Crown Victoria and Escape Hybrid ““ also is collaborating with Creative Mobile Technologies (CMT) to integrate premier payment processing and passenger information technologies in the taxi, including an 8.4-inch electronic infotainment and navigation screen that shows cab fares, news, weather, sports scores and stock ticker. The passenger can select programming, following the taxi’s route on a map and scroll through a list of points of interest.

Ford and CMT also are developing strategies for potential integration of Ford Work Solutions™, a suite of productivity technologies for business owners providing a wireless in-dash computer with full high-speed Internet access and navigation.

“Ford continues to invest in fuel-efficient new engines, deliver more technologies and product features in our vehicles, and listen to what people ““ including taxi fleet operators ““ really want,” said Mark Fields, Ford’s president of The Americas. “Ford is committed to offering new solutions and maintaining our leadership as America’s No. 1 taxi company.”

In an effort to make its new Ford Transit Connect more appealing to small business owners, FoMoCo will launch a new Web site next week for owners to design and order wraps for their work vans. The cost for the wraps will start as little as $100 for something simple to $3,500 for a complete Transit wraparound.

The site, www.fordtransitconnectgraphics.com, was developed by Ford’s partner in the program, Original Wraps Inc. It offers limitless options to customers so they can create just about any look for their Transit Connect; however, the site does warn against using copyrighted or obscene images.

“There may be no bigger investment a business owner makes than a first impression,” Len Deluca, director of Ford commercial vehicles, said in a statement. “This Web site provides a great way for a business owner to try out a look before making that investment.”

We’ll have more details next week. You can check out the site here for now.

If you haven’t been out of the house in a while and seen all the red colors, we thought it’d be kind of us to let you know that today is Valentine’s Day. Either way, if you’re significant other wants you to take them to a “chick flick” you may want to check out “Valentine’s Day,” which features an all-star cast and the Ford Transit Connect as a vehicle used to deliver flowers on one of the busiest days of the year.

“Florists throughout the U.S. are replacing larger cargo vans with the versatile Transit Connect, which offers better fuel economy, greater maneuverability and added height in the cargo area,” Ford said in a statement.

The film follows the intertwining storylines of a diverse group of Los Angelinos as they navigate their way through romance and heartbreak over the course of one Valentine”s Day. One of the main characters is a florist who uses the Transit Connect to deliver flowers on love”s most celebrated holiday.

“The delivery of flowers is one of the threads that ties all of the characters in the movie together,” said Brian Daly, senior vice president, Team Detroit, who is a member of Ford Global Brand Entertainment (FGBE). “This film is heavily character-driven, so this is one of the few opportunities for a vehicle in the film to be showcased.”

“We knew that the character of the florist was going to be a passionate entrepreneur, and since the Transit Connect is smaller than the typical cargo van, it conveys that “˜small business” message to the viewer,” said Daly. “We took it over to Warner Bros., and the production crew fell in love with it.”

In early 2005, FoMoCo was the first automaker to introduce gas-electric hybrid powered taxis in North American fleets with the Ford Escape Hybrid in San Francisco and New York City. Continuing with its fuel-efficient taxi success, FoMoCo announced today that it will start producing the new 2011 Ford Transit Connect Taxi, which will arrive in dealerships later this year.

Other than already efficient 2.0L 4-cylinder gasoline engine, Ford said that it will also offer engine prep packages on all Transit Connect models (base and taxi) allowing conversion to clean-burning natural gas (CNG) or propane (LPG). Ford says that besides offering ample space for taxi riders, the Transit Connect’s 135 cubic feet of cargo space is perfect to accommodate a compressed gas tank.

Press Release:

FORD TRANSIT CONNECT TAXI “˜ON DUTY”; NEW PEOPLE MOVER RUNS ON GREEN FUELS WITH NEW ENGINE OPTION

- Transit Connect Taxi goes into production and will be available for the 2011 model year
- Transit Connect is built on a dedicated commercial vehicle platform, tested to Ford”s toughest truck standards, offers a fuel-efficient 2.0-liter four-cylinder gas engine and is designed to meet the extreme demands of taxi service
- A new engine prep package allows conversion to efficient, clean-burning compressed natural gas (CNG) or propane (LPG, or liquefied petroleum gas)
- Transit Connect”s roomy, easy-to-access interior provides passenger comfort and ample luggage storage space, even after modification to contain CNG/LPG fuel tanks

CHICAGO, Feb. 9, 2010 ““ The Ford Transit Connect Taxi will go into production and arrive in dealerships later this year as a 2011 model, adding to Ford Motor Company”s leadership in the North American taxi market.

Making the announcement today at the Chicago Auto Show, Ford also said it will introduce engine prep packages on all Transit Connect models ““ base and taxi ““ allowing conversion to efficient, clean-burning compressed natural gas (CNG) or propane (LPG, or liquefied petroleum gas). Both CNG and LPG are popular among taxi operators because of their low cost of ownership.

The roomy, flexible interior of the Transit Connect ““ the 2010 North American Truck of the Year ““ is perfectly suited for taxi service and conversion to CNG and LPG. The vehicle”s 135 cubic feet of cargo space accommodates a compressed gas tank while leaving ample passenger legroom and cargo capacity.

“While meeting with taxi operators in cities throughout the U.S., we found considerable interest for vehicles that run on alternative fuels,” said Mark Fields, Ford”s president of The Americas. “The Transit Connect Taxi, combined with an engine modified by Ford to use CNG/LPG, is designed to meet that need. This marks a new era in “˜green” transit.”

To further serve taxi operators, Ford will provide required calibration specifications for the CNG or LPG conversion. By properly following Ford”s specifications, the conversion can be completed without voiding the engine”s warranty.

The alternative fuel advantage
According to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, CNG is less expensive and burns cleaner than gasoline, resulting in 30 percent to 40 percent less greenhouse gas emissions. Propane also burns cleaner than gasoline.

“Compressed natural gas and propane offer more than sufficient power for vehicles because they are high-energy fuels,” said Rob Stevens, Transit Connect chief engineer. “Another natural benefit for these fuels is they provide an overall lower emission of greenhouse gases compared to gasoline. Additionally, operating on CNG or LPG provides the operators lower fuel/operating costs for their fleet.”

Furthermore, nearly 87 percent of natural gas used in the United States is domestically produced. There also are government tax credit incentives for fleets to convert to alternative fuels.

Since October 2009, CNG prep packages have been available on E-Series vans with 5.4-liter and 6.8-liter gas engines.

A conversion-ready interior
The Transit Connect Taxi offers an outstanding interior package for people and cargo. With its open architecture, the taxi provides excellent interior headroom and passenger visibility. The vehicle”s rear seat has been moved back three inches to maximize passenger comfort. Plus, with 6.5 inches of ground clearance, passengers step easily through the dual sliding doors. Additional climate control ventilation has been added for rear seat passengers.

The Transit Connect Taxi also features a wiring upfit package with a hole in the roof for signage, vinyl front and rear seats, rubber rear floor, sliding second-row windows and standard third-row windows ““ all of which are factory installed. Additional installation of technology and other taxi modifications such as roof signage and the optional seating partition are handled by taxi upfitters in local markets.

The vehicle”s cargo area easily accommodates compressed natural gas tanks directly behind the second-row seat, still allowing ample luggage storage.

Technology on the go
Ford is collaborating with Creative Mobile Technologies, LLC (CMT), to integrate premier payment processing and passenger information technologies in the Transit Connect Taxi.

Ford and CMT also are developing strategies for potential integration of Ford Work Solutions, a suite of productivity technologies for business owners providing a wireless in-dash computer with full high-speed Internet access and navigation. “Ford has demonstrated a significant commitment to support the taxi industry with not only a dedicated product but also with the commitment to work with the technology companies that support the industry,” said Jason Poliner, chief operating officer, CMT. “Ford understands that the taxi business is not just the vehicle but a complete technological solution.”

Evidence of how this technology could work in the future is included in the Transit Connect Taxi. It also features an 8.4-inch electronic infotainment and navigation screen that shows cab fare, news, weather, sports scores and stock ticker. With the touch screen, passengers also can select their choice of programming, follow the taxi”s journey on a map, or scroll through a list of points of interest along the route ““ including restaurants, museums and shops.

Once at the destination, the screen displays the fare with options to pay via cash, credit or debit. Cardholders can swipe their card, select a pre-calculated tip recommendation or utilize the touch screen to enter a tip amount, and complete the transaction right from their seat.

Building on taxi leadership
The “green” taxi isn”t new at Ford, which has been a leader in the taxi business for decades. Ford was the first manufacturer to introduce gas-electric hybrid-powered taxis into North American fleets with the launch of the Ford Escape Hybrid in San Francisco and New York City in early 2005.

Built on a dedicated commercial vehicle platform and tested to Ford tough truck standards, the Transit Connect Taxi ““ including gasoline-powered versions and those modified to operate on CNG/LPG ““ is designed to meet the extreme demands of taxi service.

With its standard 2.0-liter, four-cylinder engine and automatic transmission, the conventionally powered Transit Connect is expected to deliver an estimated 30 percent improvement in fuel economy over many of today”s traditional taxis.

“Transit Connect already has proven that it offers tremendous versatility for commercial fleet use,” said Gerry Koss, Ford fleet marketing manager. “The Transit Connect taxi, combined with the capability for CNG/LPG conversion, further demonstrates its flexibility.”

FoMoCo has confirmed that it will unveil a new all-electric version of the Ford Transit Connect van at the 2010 Chicago Auto Show next week. The battery-powered Transit Connect will be the first in a series of electric-vehicles from the Dearborn automaker and will be available to fleet customers later this year.

“Ford Transit Connect Electric is an urban, zero emission, light commercial van that serves the environment as well as its owners,” said Ford spokesman Robert Parker. “Instead of an internal combustion engine, the Transit Connect Electric uses a high-voltage electric motor that takes its power from a battery pack charged by plugging into a 120- or 240-volt outlet and uses not a single drop of gas.”

In October, FoMoCo announced that it has teamed up with Azure Dynamics Corporation to produce batteries for the Transit Connect BEV.

The Ford Transit Connect BEV will be followed by the Ford Focus BEV in 2011.

Press Release:

FORD SWEEPS N.A. CAR AND TRUCK OF THE YEAR AWARDS

* Ford swept the North American Car and Truck of the Year awards today at the North American International Auto Show (NAIAS), winning both prestigious awards for the 2010 Ford Fusion Hybrid and the 2010 Ford Transit Connect, respectively
* It is the third time in 17 years that one manufacturer has won both awards
* The Ford Fusion Hybrid is America”s most fuel-efficient midsize sedan with an EPA-estimated 41 mpg rating in the city and 36 mpg on the highway, topping the Toyota Camry hybrid by 8 mpg in the city and 2 mpg on the highway
* The Transit Connect is an industry-exclusive vehicle developed to be a smart new choice for small business owners; it offers double the fuel economy of full-size vans, generous and accessible cargo space, and the agility and maneuverability to operate in crowded urban areas

DETROIT, Jan. 11, 2010 ““ Ford Motor Company scored a historic doubleheader today, capturing both the North American Car of the Year and North American Truck of the Year awards for the 2010 Ford Fusion Hybrid and 2010 Ford Transit Connect, respectively, at the North American International Auto Show (NAIAS). It is only the third time in 17 years that one manufacturer has won both titles.

The North American Car and Truck of the Year awards recognize vehicles based on factors including innovation, design, safety, handling, driver satisfaction and value for the dollar. A jury of 49 automotive journalists in the United States and Canada vote for the vehicles, which must be “all-new” or “substantially changed” from the previous model to qualify for the award.

The Fusion Hybrid edged out finalists including the Buick LaCrosse and Volkswagen Golf/GTI to win the North American Car of the Year award. It is the fourth hybrid vehicle in 17 years to win recognition as North American Car (or Truck) of the Year. It also is the second hybrid win for Ford ““ the most hybrid wins for any automaker. The Ford Escape Hybrid was named North American Truck of the Year in 2005.

The Transit Connect bested finalists including the Chevrolet Equinox and Subaru Outback to win the North American Truck of the Year award. It is the sixth Ford truck to win the award ““ the most wins of any automaker in the 17-year history of the awards program. It also is the second year in a row that Ford has captured the title. Last year, top honors went to the 2009 Ford F-150.

Fusion Hybrid a winner out of the gate
The North American Car of the Year award is the latest in an impressive string of awards and accolades for the Fusion Hybrid. Most recently, the vehicle was honored as CAR and DRIVER Magazine”s “10Best” Cars for 2010, one of AUTOMOBILE Magazine”s 2010 All-Stars, and the entire Fusion lineup captured the acclaimed MOTOR TREND Car of the Year® award.

The all-new Fusion Hybrid arrived in dealers in March, complete with a powertrain system that combines the best attributes of the gasoline engine and electric battery-driven motors to deliver the optimal experience for the customer in terms of driving performance and fuel economy.
The Fusion Hybrid also offers drivers a way to be more connected to the hybrid driving experience thanks to Ford”s SmartGauge™ with EcoGuide, a unique instrument cluster execution that helps coach them on how to optimize the performance of their hybrid.

Other class-exclusive technologies and features that set the Fusion Hybrid apart from the competition include Blind Spot Information System (BLIS®), Ford SYNC®, SIRIUS Travel Link™ and more total passenger and luggage capacity than the Toyota Camry.

Despite the slump in overall industry sales, 2009 was a record-breaking year for the Ford Fusion. Sales are at an all-time high, with the Fusion Hybrid accounting for almost 20 percent of total Fusion retail sales. Perhaps even more significant, more than 60 percent of Fusion Hybrid sales have been to customers coming from import brands ““ mostly Toyota and Honda.

The Fiat Doblo is sold as seven-seat passenger vehicle or a panel van for small businesses. It has been sold in Europe since 2001. The model will join a large Fiat-based van to be sold in the United States by Ram, along with a restyled chassis cab model and light and heavy duty Ram vehicles.

Chrysler said it expects Ram sales to hit 415,000 by 2014, up from 280,000 in 2010.
