Ford will continue its tradition of using high-profile racing events to show off its new vehicels, only this year with a new twist. The Dearborn company will feature the 2013 Police Interceptor Utility (Explorer) and Sedan (Taurus) during the Ford Championship Weekend races.

The Police Interceptors will be released in 2012, and will appear for the first time on the NASCAR circut.

Ford has been the predominant brand for police vehicles for 15 years, and continue the tradition with the new Interceptors. The new models were created with a top of the line powertrain, technology and safety innovations.

Ford has also made the first Utility vehicle ready for pursuit, which will also be racing during the Ford Championship Weekend. Both the sedan and the utility will be pacing the races.

In the past, Ford has been the first to bring a Hybrid to pace at the NASCAR races with the Fusion Hybrid, and the brand has featured the 2011 Explorer SUV and the Mustang GT 5.0-liter V-8 as pace cars.

“Using our new range of Ford products to pace signature events like Ford Championship Weekend is an important part of our marketing strategy,” said Jamie Allison, director, Ford Racing. “We’re thrilled that we’re able to help launch the new Police Interceptors at Ford Championship Weekend, and know that the fans will be excited to see these unique vehicles performing out on track.”

Okay – it’s no joke that FoMoCo’s MyFord Touch infotainment touch sensitive system was a total failure for the automaker. The glitches in the system even ended up hurting the way the company’s vehicles were recommended by Consumer Reports. Well, Ford heard the complaints of the media and its customers and is unveiling a new MyFord Touch system that will be faster and easier to use.

The upgraded MyFord Touch system will debut at the 2011 LA Auto Show and will first be offered with the new 2013 Ford Escape (which will also debut in LA), Flex and Taurus.

Existing MyFord Touch owners will be able to upgrade their system for free.

“SYNC has clearly been a game-changing technology and now we’re changing the game again, showing how quickly we can deliver more of what customers really want,” said Graydon Reitz, director, Ford Global Electronics and Electrical Systems Engineering. “Our strategy to create the SYNC software platform and add the customizable screens of MyFord Touch gives us a level of flexibility and speed to respond to customer input like never before seen in the auto industry.”

Ford says the new system’s touchscreen interface features simpler graphics and controls that are easier to use.

Hit the jump for the list of new features and a video of the new MyFord Touch system in action.

New features

Ford also took the opportunity to update the performance of the system and add new features for customers to help them keep pace with the fast-moving consumer electronics market.

Faster touch-screen response time, for example, was a key request from owners. Initial testing shows that touch and voice response is at least two times faster than the current system.

Also, the software upgrade includes the following enhancements:

Improved voice recognition experience powered by Nuance

Quicker voice recognition upon startup and faster command prompt when the voice button is pushed

Voice commands used in conjunction with navigation are simplified through elimination of the need to provide street direction, e.g., “Main Street” instead of “North Main Street”

Music requests are simpler by removing the need to include the additional song, album or artist information often found at the end of a name in parenthesis or brackets

Customers can find their favorite sports team in action via new Sirius Game Finder simply by saying a command such as “Tune to Detroit Lions game”

Tablet device compatibility

Music and other media content from most popular tablet computers like the Apple iPad can now be accessed through a simple USB connection

Audible.com audiobook support

Listen to Audible.com content using voice commands or the easy-to-use touch-screen controls

Connected navigation powered by TeleNav features new map data by NAVTEQ

Updated map views are richer and feature more 3D landmarks

Views of freeway junctions and signs are enhanced through photorealistic screen images

Smart routing options are provided based on a database of historical traffic patterns

Phone compatibility

Automatic Bluetooth® connection upon vehicle entry has been improved

Noise and echo cancellation during phone calls has been improved to enhance call quality

Gracenote® album cover art database

Inclusion of the latest music metadata available enhancing the music playback experience

Improved voice recognition for music search allowing drivers to pinpoint artists with hard-to-pronounce names or nicknames

Ford’s efforts to step up their game have definitely been paying off. Anyone who has been in a recent Ford product knows this and the Deaborn make has no plans of stopping.

In a small press conference, Ford said that they’ll be focusing their products around improving fuel economy, reducing weight and making the engines lighter and smaller without a sacrifice in performance, safety or luxury. Additionally, since the Mercury brand received the axe not too long ago, Ford said that their chance to really focus on their lineup is now.

Here are some of the outlines for Ford’s plans.

The Fiesta, although new as of 2010 as a 2011 model, will most likely get a new 1.0L three-banger EcoBoost engine for 2013 or 2014. A mid-cycle refresh is expected in 2014.

The Focus is also new as of this year. An electric version is planned for release in 2012, while the hot performance ST version with Ford’s 2.0L turbocharged EcoBoost engine will hit our shores in 2012. An all-wheel drive RS model is also a possibility (keep your fingers crossed).

The Mustang will be completely redesigned for 2015 as the nameplate turns 50 years old at the turn of the year 2014. The new Mustang is rumored to get a completely new platform with…get this…fully independent rear suspension, moving away from the ancient old solid-rear axle.

The Fusion is expected to get a redesign for 2013 while the current Fusion could receive Ford’s new EcoBoost four-banger. As a result, the V6 may be dropped. However, rumor also has it that Ford is currently trying to develop 2.5L and 2.7L EcoBoost V6s for 2014 and 2015 and the Fusion may see this engine.

The Taurus will be restyled for 2013 and we were able to catch a glimpse of it at this past year’s New York Auto Show. Additionally, a reworked 3.5L EcoBoost V6 will find its way into the updated SHO. A new base engine will be the new 2.0L EcoBoost four-banger while the new 2.5L EcoBoost V6 as aforementioned in the Fusion bit will also make its way into the Taurus by 2015.

A new, completely redesigned Escape will come in 2013 and is most likely to be based on the next-generation European Kuga crossover, which is also based on the new Ford Focus platform. But the biggest issue for the Escape is the question as to whether a new Escape Hybrid will make a comeback, as Ford did not make a comment.

The Edge has just received a mid-cycle refresh so a complete redesign is not expected until 2014 or 2015. The same could be said for the Explorer, which is new as of this year so a mid-cycle refresh should occur at the same time the new Edge comes out.

The Flex crossover will get a small refresh for the 2012 model year while a complete redesign is expected for 2015. The engine choices for the new Flex in 2015 are still in the unknown, but chances are the new 2.0L EcoBoost inline-4 will make its way into the Flex.

The Expedition is said to get a refresh for 2012 or 2013. Also, because of the success with the 3.5L EcoBoost V6 in the F150, Ford said that the same engine could make its way into the Expedition. And to make things even sweeter, the Expedition’s “Triton” V8 will be phased out and replaced by the epic new 5.0L V8 that first debuted in the Mustang.

The F150 is expected to be completely redesigned for 2015 or 2016 while the Super Duty versions will be refreshed in 2014 after already receiving some minor updates.

The Transit Connect has been around since December of 2010 so a redesign isn’t expected until 2013. And lastly, the Econoline is rumored to be replaced in 2014 by a derivative of the European-developed Transit.

A top Ford official said that the Taurus isn’t planned to take over the Crown Victoria until it dies, so the new 2013 Taurus may be following you in your rear-view-mirror since few police agencies have ordered them and since deliveries aren’t scheduled to begin later this year.

Refresher: The 2012 Ford Police Interceptor is offered with two V6 engine options. The first is a 3.5L V6 engine that produces 263-hp and offers E85 capability. It is 25 percent more efficient than the current 4.6L SOHC V8 offered in the Crown Victoria. The second offering is Ford’s new 3.5L EcoBoost twin-turbocharged V6 making 365-hp and 350 lb-ft of torque.

The current Ford Taurus SHO has been with us for about three years now and has received mixed reviews. So naturally, we wouldn’t be expecting a mid-cycle refresh for another couple years. But FoMoCo decided to change things up and debuted the mid-cycle update for the 2013 Taurus earlier today at the 2011 New York Auto Show.

The refresh will feature some revised bodywork but will also feature bigger brakes, a reworked suspension to improve driving dynamics as well as other performance-inspired design.

Click here for more news on the Ford Taurus.

Power for the 2013 Ford Taurus goes unchanged as the 3.5L EcoBoost V6 is carried over, producing 365hp and 250lb-ft of torque with a six-speed automatic and is capable of 25 mpg on the highway.

Also added to the mix is an optional Performance Package that adds larger brakes, 20-inch wheels with summer-performance tires and a reinforced cooling system for more spirited driving that will hopefully address the performance criticisms of the original model.

Along with the Ford Taurus SHO refresh that debuted earlier today at the 2011 New York Auto Show, the standard Taurus also receives a little aesthetic update and two new engine choices for 2013.

The 2013 Taurus will bet a new 2.0L EcoBoost four-pot good for 237hp and 250lb-ft of torque and is estimated to achieve a best-in-class fuel economy of at least 31 mpg. That bests the Toyota Avalon by 2 mpg and the Chrysler 300/Dodge Charger by 4 mpg.

Click here for more news on the Ford Taurus.

The second engine choice is the standard 3.5L V6 that we’ve come to get used to in other Fords of the past that comes in the Taurus SE, SEL and Limited Series models. Complete with the addition of twin independent variable camshaft timing (Ti-VCT), the 3.5L V6 produces 290hp versus 263hp on the old model and 255lb-ft of torque.

Other upgrades include a new rear differential that helps save weight and boost fuel economy.

Loyalist input brings new customers
Direct, unfiltered feedback from the Taurus SHO enthusiast community and input from buyers of this reinvented icon reinforced the idea that evolving the SHO was a very good thing indeed.

“The SHO enthusiast clubs and dedicated online forums were supportive resources for us,” said Amy Marentic, group marketing manager. “In the interim, our relationship with the enthusiast community has continued to evolve, inspiring us to deliver an even better SHO with the next generation.”

SHO builds on a platform of customer satisfaction.

“Initial Quality Study data from J.D. Power and Associates showed that the 2010 Taurus SHO gained phenomenal acceptance, as 92 percent of customers were satisfied with their vehicles,” said Marentic. “In addition, Taurus SHO delivered new customers to the Ford showroom at an incredible rate. Roughly half of 2010 SHO customers had not previously considered nor shopped Ford. We frequently see high-end sedans – 3- and 5-Series BMWs and Acura TLs – as trade-ins.”

Taurus SHO is drawing new shoppers to the Ford showroom, based on its unmatched combination of 365 twin-turbocharged EcoBoost horsepower, torque-sensing all-wheel drive, available technologies and up to 25 EPA-rated mpg on the highway.

SHO Performance Package
For discriminating automotive performance enthusiasts demanding the ultimate in uncompromised dynamics and response, the 2013 Taurus SHO offers a new Performance Package that is engineered to deliver greater handling responsiveness, power and durability under more sporting driving conditions.

The SHO Performance Package includes:

Press Release:

New Ford Taurus Delivers Increased Fuel Economy with Expanded Powertrain Offerings

With two new engine choices, the new Ford Taurus sedan offers projected best-in-class fuel economy of up to at least 31 mpg highway – almost 15 percent higher than the Chrysler 300 or Dodge Charger

Taurus adds second EcoBoost™ engine option with the highly efficient new 2.0-liter engine, ideal for sedan buyers placing the highest priority on fuel economy

Standard Taurus 3.5-liter V6 provides more horsepower and fuel economy with the addition of twin independent variable camshaft timing (Ti-VCT), providing unmatched fuel economy in its segment

Each Taurus engine is mated to a unique six-speed automatic transmission with optimized gearing and SelectShift Automatic™ functionality

NEW YORK, April 19, 2011 – Fuel efficiency comes standard with the new Ford Taurus, featuring an expanded array of fuel-efficient powertrains engineered to improve fuel economy without compromising power or responsiveness.

These new engines join the Taurus SHO twin-turbocharged EcoBoost V6 that provides sport-sedan power while delivering up to 25 mpg on the highway.

EcoBoost 2.0-liter engine
For full-size sedan buyers seeking maximum fuel efficiency without the additional cost or complexity of a hybrid powertrain, the new Taurus offers Ford’s new EcoBoost 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine as an option. This advanced engine combines direct injection of gasoline and a turbocharger to provide performance comparable to normally aspirated V6 engines offered by competitors.

The EcoBoost 2.0-liter is anticipated to deliver an estimated 237 horsepower and 250 lb.-ft. of torque while delivering best-in-class fuel economy of at least 31 mpg. That bests Toyota Avalon by 2 mpg and Chrysler 300 and Dodge Charger by 4 mpg.

Like other Ford EcoBoost engines, peak torque is generated in a wide band from 1,750 to 4,000 rpm.

This torque plateau makes for flexible, efficient power delivery across a broad range of engine and vehicle speeds, while helping to conserve fuel by making peak torque available at lower rpm levels. Ti-VCT, four valves per cylinder and direct-acting mechanical bucket (DAMB) valve lifters increase mechanical efficiency across the operating range.

A relatively high compression ratio is enabled by the use of direct injection of gasoline, operating at fuel pressures from 2,200 to 2,800 psi. The unique turbocharger is optimally matched to the EcoBoost 2.0-liter engine and direct injection system, providing precise fuel pressure control to deliver boosted power at low rpm without annoying turbo lag.

The EcoBoost 2.0-liter uses 5W30-GF4 oil to reduce internal friction, and enables 10,000-mile oil change intervals providing a reduction in cost of ownership. In addition, fuel economy is optimized with a low-tension accessory drive belt and a one-way alternator clutch.

Targeted durability is 10 years or 150,000 miles. Durability actions include enhanced oil filtration and cleanliness and cast inter-bore cooling within the all-aluminum engine block. Thermal efficiency is optimized by employment of a full-face charge-style air cooler.

EcoBoost 3.5-liter V6 engine
The EcoBoost 3.5-liter V6 – standard equipment in the high-performance Taurus SHO – is Ford’s most powerful EcoBoost offering, delivering 365 horsepower and 350 lb.-ft. of torque.

Like all Ford EcoBoost engines, this engine produces peak torque across a broad plateau from 1,500 to 5,250 rpm. Peak torque, building quickly off idle, ensures responsive acceleration.

From the driver’s seat, the result is linear power delivery.

Combining direct injection and a pair of turbochargers, this engine avoids lag by employing impellers that spool up quickly for swift response. The Taurus SHO combination of power, linear torque delivery, all-wheel drive and up to 25 mpg highway is unmatched by competitors.

Ti-VCT 3.5-liter V6 engine
The 3.5-liter V6 is offered as standard equipment in Taurus SE, SEL and Limited series models.

In the new Taurus, this engine benefits from the addition of Ti-VCT, enabling optimized fuel economy, additional horsepower and a reduction in part-throttle emissions compared to the previous standard Taurus V6. This engine is projected to deliver 255 lb.-ft. of torque and 290 horsepower, up from 263 horsepower in the current model.

Ti-VCT allows precise control of valve overlap variability or the time when intake and exhaust valves are open concurrently. The result is increased mechanical efficiency for improved response and performance. This improved engine breathing helps to increase fuel economy.

This V6 engine also features a DAMB valvetrain with polished buckets to reduce friction, piston-cooling jets, improved bay-to-bay breathing through cylinder blocks and a new higher-capacity oil pan.

The 3.5-liter V6 sees a fuel economy benefit from aggressive deceleration fuel shutoff, restricting fuel flow under closed-throttle situations.

This engine has been engineered for durability with chain-driven camshafts, high-strength forged metal connecting rods with floating pins, a fully counterweighted forged steel crankshaft, die-cast aluminum deep-sump oil pan and four-bolt main bearing caps with side bolts through the engine block.

Noise, vibration and harshness (NVH) characteristics are controlled and reduced through employment of a tuned composite upper and lower manifold, a silent-chain camshaft drive and an acoustic engine cover.

The new Taurus with standard Ti-VCT V6 is anticipated to deliver more than 3 percent better highway fuel economy and will be unsurpassed in its segment. In addition, the standard V6 adds 27 horsepower.

Six-speed transmissions
Each Taurus engine is mated to a unique six-speed automatic transmission specifically tailored to that application. Six-speed transmissions add fuel economy and performance, as they allow for lower gearing to be optimized for improved off-the-line acceleration, yet enable higher gears to help provide economical cruising by keeping engine rpm levels low.

The 2.0-liter EcoBoost Taurus is fitted with a new 6F35 gearbox featuring active transmission warmup and a “dot nozzle” internal clutch friction material configuration. Together, these innovations contribute to overall fuel efficiency by reducing internal friction at warmup and when internal clutches are fully engaged.

Taurus models equipped with the 3.5-liter Ti-VCT V6 feature the 6F50 six-speed transmission, while the Taurus SHO sport sedan mates a high-capacity 6F55 version of this gearbox to the twin-turbocharged 3.5-liter EcoBoost V6.

Way back in the old days Henry Ford would tell Model T buyers, ‘you can have any color you like, so long as it’s black.’ However, today as Japanese suppliers struggle to come back from the disastrous earthquake and tsunami, FoMoCo is asking its dealers to order pickups and USVs in any color but black.

Ford has asked its dealers not to order any full-size pickup or SUV in Tuxedo Black because of a problem getting a paint ingredient from a supplier in Japan. Ford is also cutting back on its use of Tuxedo Black on mid-size SUVs and the Ford Taurus and Lincoln MKS.

Apparently the red color is also a problem, Ford is cutting back, but not stopping, three shades of red on SuperDuty F-Series pickups, Ranger, Focus, Econoline vans and the Lincoln Navigator.

Who’s this Japanese supplier? No idea, but they provide a patented substance called Xirallic, which is used to give the red and black paints a slight metallic glitter.

FoMoCo is doing all it can to keep its lead in the police vehicle market and has launched six-action-packed webisodes putting the new Police Interceptor Sedan (Taurus) and the Police Interceptor SUV (Explorer) up against the competition.

The six episode series features authorities going trough a series competitive driving exercises against the Chevrolet Tahoe PPV and Dodge Charger Pursuit, showing that Ford isn’t afraid of putting its new Police Interceptors up for any challenge. Officers had the chance to test power and performance on a black lake simulating slick conditions, capability and durability in the Dog Bone gravel pit, and acceleration, handling and braking tests on a tight, aggressive cone course.

“We set out to develop our new Police Interceptors to not only meet the current leader – our own Crown Victoria – but to exceed it and the competition,” said Lisa Teed, Ford Police Interceptor marketing manager. “As we prepare for one of the biggest launches in our history of developing police vehicles, we’re committed to remaining the nation’s largest provider. These videos prove our new vehicles are purpose-built, capable, and deliver the safety, technology and performance officers need to excel at their jobs.”

The Ford Explorer Police Interceptor is powered by a 3.7L V6 unit making 300-hp, while the Ford Taurus Police Interceptor is powered by a 3.5L twin-turbocharged V6 EcoBoos making 365-hp and 350 lb-ft.

Both models will be built at Ford’s Chicago Assembly Plant and will debut after production of the Crown Victoria Police Interceptor ends at the end of this year.

Press Release:

All-New Ford Police Interceptors Challenge Competitors in New Web Series Testing Performance, Handling and Durability

Ford readies for the launch of its all-new Police Interceptors – the largest fleet launch in the company’s history – with an action-packed new web series that puts Ford’s purpose-built Interceptors up against the competition

Four experienced law enforcement officers from the United States and Canada put the all-new Ford Police Interceptors and the competition through a series of real-world police maneuvers and driving conditions to find out which is the most capable

Ford’s new Police Interceptor sedan and utility, which debut after production of the Crown Victoria Police Interceptor ends later this year, are purpose-built to give law enforcement agencies a comprehensive choice for pursuit vehicles

DEARBORN, Mich., March 7, 2011 – Ford, the leader in the police vehicle market, is putting the company’s all-new Police Interceptor sedan and utility up against the competition in six action-packed webisodes that debut today.

Cameras rolling, Ford turns its all-new Police Interceptors, which debut later this year, over to the authorities for a series of competitive driving exercises against the Chevrolet Tahoe PPV and Dodge Charger Pursuit, proving that Ford’s Police Interceptors are up for any challenge. Officers test Interceptor power and performance on a black lake simulating slick conditions, capability and durability in the Dog Bone gravel pit, and acceleration, handling and braking tests on a tight, aggressive cone course.

Rigorously tested, police-tuned

Proven on and off camera, Ford’s Police Interceptor sedan and utility have been put through their paces, undergoing a battery of torture tests to ensure the vehicles’ individual components can hold up to rigorous driving. Certification testing designed by the Michigan State Police and Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department proved out the durability and capability of the vehicles through a variety of punishing tracks.

Meeting a spectrum of needs
With the launch of the all-new sedan and utility Police Interceptor, Ford now provides a complete package of performance and capability designed to meet the diverse and ever-increasing needs of law enforcement agencies across the U.S. Ford’s pursuit-rated utility brings versatility to law enforcement in times where resources are constrained and agencies have to do more with less.

Ford’s portfolio provides departments the ability to select the vehicle that best meets their needs. Agencies can now select from a combination of two bodystyles, all-wheel drive (AWD) or front-wheel drive (FWD), and multiple powertrains delivering at least 20 percent more fuel efficiency than the 4.6-liter single-overhead-cam (SOHC) V8 offered in the current Crown Victoria Police Interceptor.

Ford’s new Police Interceptor utility vehicle is equipped with the highly efficient 3.7-liter V6 engine. This Ti-VCT engine, delivering at least 300 horsepower and E85 compatibility, is mated to a unique six-speed automatic transmission that combines lowered initial gears for improved off-the-line acceleration and higher gearing for improved efficiency at lower engine rpm when cruising.

For the sedan, officers will have their choice of a highly capable 3.5-liter V6 engine delivering at least 280 horsepower and E85 compatibility, or the 3.5-liter EcoBoost™ V6 twin-turbocharged, direct-injection engine delivering at least 365 horsepower and 350 lb.-ft. of torque across a broad rpm range.

Both Ford Police Interceptors will be manufactured at Ford’s Chicago Assembly Plant and will debut after production of the Crown Victoria Police Interceptor ends at the end of 2011.

Here is some good news for Ford’s new Taurus-based Police Interceptor. In a recent Police Interceptor sedan testing by the Los Angeles Sheriff’s Department, Ford’s offering recorded the fastest lap time of any police car.

“Ford’s Police Interceptor AWD sedan, equipped with the 3.5-liter V6 EcoBoost engine, delivered an impressive 0-60 mph test of 5.8 seconds and the fastest lap time – trumping all V8 competition from Chevrolet and Dodge,” FoMoCo said in a statement. “Ford’s 3.5-liter EcoBoost V6 is a twin-turbocharged, direct-injection engine that will deliver at least 365 horsepower and 350 lb.-ft. of torque across a broad rpm range.”

“These are purpose-built vehicles that we have developed with the support of police agencies across the U.S. and Canada,” said Kevin Koswick, director of Ford’s North American Fleet Operations. “As the leader in police vehicles 15 years running, Ford is committed to remaining the nation’s largest provider of police vehicles. We’re offering law enforcement officials a portfolio of products that are purpose-built and deliver on our commitment of providing the safety, technology, durability and performance they need to excel at their jobs.”

Also for the first time ever, Ford has a Police Interceptor SUV – based on the new 2011 Explorer – equipped with a 3.7-liter V6 Ti-VCT engine and all-wheel-drive technology. When tested with a 400-pound loaded cargo box, the Explorer-based Police Interceptor SUV posted the fastest lap time, beating the Chevrolet Tahoe by more than two seconds.

Both Ford Police Interceptors will debut after production of the Crown Victoria Police Interceptor ends at the end of 2011.

FoMoCo will have a huge entourage at the 2010 SEMA Show, which runs from Nov. 2-5. Hoping to impress the law enforcement, Ford will debut a special stealth concept version of the Ford’s Police Interceptor Taurus in Las Vegas.

The Ford Police Interceptor Stealth Concept draws inspiration from the SR-71 Blackbird, the original stealth airplane revealed in the “60s and considered by many aviation experts to be the ultimate aircraft. Designed by Ford designer Melvin Betancourt, the concept was developed to be stylish and full of high-tech gadgets.

Click here for more news on the Ford Police Interceptor.

“This car offered the perfect canvas for me as a designer,” Betancourt said. “The Police Interceptor sedan is already a unique vehicle. I just started looking at ways to give it that mysterious but high-tech look. The rim section is stacked to give it the illusion of greater width. The center of the wheel is glossy black, and the rim is chrome. So we have that racy, hot rod look, but at the same time we”re building a sinister, stealthy, “˜Don”t mess with me” feeling.”

If we saw this thing on the road – we definitely wouldn’t mess with it.

Press Release:

Ford to debut the ultimate stealth Police Interceptor at SEMA ““ a customized concept of its all-new Police Interceptor sedan

Revamped grille, lighting, exhaust and interior provide a sleek, yet slightly sinister look designed to blend muscle with mystery

Designer drew inspiration from the SR-71 Blackbird, the original stealth airplane revealed in the “60s and considered by many aviation experts to be the ultimate aircraft

DEARBORN, Nov. 1, 2010 ““ Sleek, streamlined and slightly sinister, a specialized stealth concept version of Ford”s Police Interceptor will debut at the SEMA (Specialty Equipment Market Association) trade show in Las Vegas.

Using the strong lines and muscular stance of the Ford Police Interceptor sedan as a base, Ford designer Melvin Betancourt developed a customized undercover stealth version that”s both stylish and full of high-tech surprises.

The Police Interceptor sedan was introduced in March, followed by a utility version in September. Both Interceptors will debut simultaneously when production of the Ford Crown Victoria Police Interceptor ceases in late 2011.

The stealth concept vehicle will be on display throughout the SEMA show, which runs Nov. 2-5.

Betancourt started the undercover version by lowering the body and giving the illusion of added width. The body was lowered an inch, and the special 22-inch wheels are inside a staggered rim section so the front is 3 inches and the rear is 3.5 inches.

Top-secret airplane provides inspiration

Betancourt used imagery of the SR-71, the original stealth airplane, for inspiration as he customized the vehicle. Known as the “Blackbird,” this high-altitude, long-range reconnaissance aircraft was secretly designed in the late 1950s and early 1960s. Its top speed was more than three times the speed of sound. Now retired, the Blackbird is considered by many aviation enthusiasts as the ultimate airplane.

Betancourt kept in mind the Blackbird”s iconic imagery and status as he considered the elements of his own stealth project. “When you think stealth, you think, “˜there, but not there.” This is all about strength, secrecy and concealment.”

The exterior of the Police Interceptor stealth vehicle is solid black. The grille is mesh, like the original sedan, but the metal is thicker, offering more depth. The lights on the car are designed to be inconspicuous, with the surrounding area painted black so they blend in until illuminated.

The back of the vehicle was given an aggressive spoiler adorned with bead lights painted black so they remain unnoticed until the car is started. The taillights are smoked, the windows tinted.

It”s a vehicle that exudes power ““ and it should. The production Police Interceptor sedan model offers two powertrain options, allowing police to choose the engine that best meets their needs.

A 3.5-liter V6 engine delivering at least 280 horsepower and E85 compatibility is 25 percent more efficient than the 4.6-liter single-overhead-cam V8 offered in the current Ford Crown Victoria Police Interceptor. And an all-new 3.5-liter twin-turbocharged, direct-injection EcoBoost™ V6 engine will deliver at least 365 horsepower and 350 lb.-ft. of torque across a broad rpm range.

That strength complements the mystery inside the revamped interior of the stealth version.

“It”s all about concealing everything,” Betancourt said. “The headliner is black, we wrapped the B-pillars in black, and then we started looking at, “˜Where can I hide this? How can I conceal this?” We repackaged the console ““ it looks like a production console with the waterfall of the instrument panel. But when you start opening doors and panels, that”s when you see everything.”

Unless you”re supposed to be in the vehicle, you won”t know where and how to find the compartments, he said. For example, the radio is hidden inside the console, as is an onboard computer. Also, the glove box has a secret space designed for weapons.

Betancourt anticipates visitors to SEMA will immediately sense the uniqueness of the car.

“Right away, they”ll see this vehicle that looks different, that looks sinister ““ but they won”t know exactly why. Then, as they get closer, they”ll start to see all of these touches that work together to create the overall image.”

We had our first encounter with the totally reengineered and redesigned 2010 Ford Taurus back in October, when FoMoCo dropped a top-of-the-line 365-hp 2010 Ford Taurus SHO off at our garage. With a starting MSRP of $37,770 however, that vehicle is certainly not one designed for the masses.

More recently, Ford gave us the pleasure of testing the Taurus Limited; a fully optioned out Taurus that derives its power from a 263-hp Duratec 3.5-liter V6 engine. With prices starting at $25,995 (for the SE model) the non-SHO Taurus models are ones to consider when shopping in the midsize segment.

The Life and Times of the Ford Taurus:

A decade prior to the 2010 Ford Taurus being rolled off the assembly line, sales of the midsize sedan were such that Ford would eventually kill production, as the better overall quality of vehicles being offered by Japanese competitors eroded the Taurus” customer base. On October 27, 2006, Ford idled its Atlanta plant, and there closed a chapter in the history of the Ford Taurus.

The full-size sedan, the Ford Five Hundred would replace the Taurus as Ford”s flagship vehicle, but the death of the Taurus remained a controversial matter; many believed that the Taurus was discontinued because it was unable to compete in the expanding sedan market, others blamed Ford of neglecting the badge so that it eventually became a “˜rental car”, and others still thought that Ford had starved the brand of new technology, engineering, and marketing that its competitors were not of their vehicles.

Alan Mulally of Boeing, was named President and CEO of Ford on September 5, 2006. He thought it was completely wrong of Ford to rid its lineup of the car that had long been the company”s bestseller, and one of his earliest decisions was to resurrect the Taurus badge.

We tip our hats to Mr. Mulally. It is 4 years after the fact, and the Taurus is back, and with a vengeance. The 2010 Ford Taurus is a completely reinvented vehicle from its brand new design to its all-new engineering, and a killer marketing campaign to boot.

Exterior:

When Mulally came to Ford he wasted no time, and rebadged the Five Hundred as the Taurus; a move that was the subject of much criticism. Mulally would shut the nay-sayers up at the 2009 NAIAS in Detroit when he unveiled to the public the 2010 Ford Taurus. The all-new vehicle was sleeker, sportier, and much more aggressive than its ancestors; all in all, it was a car that gave Ford something they could viably compete against the Japanese with.

Though the 2010 Taurus is a behemoth of a car, it possesses an air of refinement. The recessed parking lamp frames serve so as to offset the aggressiveness created by the three-bar grille with massive “˜Ford” badging.

The car sits atop a 112.9 inch wheelbase measures 202.9 inches long and 76.2 inches wide. The car also has a bit of height as it measures 60.7 inches tall. Those dimensions make the Taurus bigger than most of the competition including the Accord, Camry, Malibu, 300, and Maxima. When standing beside the car, one may easily feel as they are standing next to a crossover and not a sedan, which may detract some buyers in spite of the impressiveness and sleekness of the new design.

Review: 2010 Ford Taurus - Interior

Interior:

When compared to that of the competition, the interior of the Taurus is impressive to say the least. The Taurus really excels at providing a plush, rich, luxurious interior while keeping a reasonable price. One-second inside this car and its relationship to the Lincoln is apparent.

While the interior definitely exudes poshness, the tech savvy will also be impressed with the offering of gadgets Ford has provided. The model you choose (SE, SEL, or Limited) will determine which features come standard and which are optionally available, but Ford offers push button start, adaptive cruise control, collision warning with brake support, SecuriCode keyless entry, automatic high-beams, rain-sensing wipers, blind spot information system, cross-traffic alert, the impressive Microsoft SYNC interface, voice-activated navigation with Sirius Travel Link, rear-view camera, Sony audio system with iPod and Bluetooth connectivity, and much more. Our test Taurus Limited model was fully optioned out and we got to enjoy all of the above leaving us plenty of wonderful gadgets to play with over the span of a week.

We really only have two gripes with the interior, and they”re really pretty petty matters; while it is certainly roomy, the interior is a tad bulky and oversized, and the trunk release button is awkwardly positioned on the passenger side of the dash ““ that”s about it.

With comfortable seating for five, ample trunk space of 20 cubic feet, and 60/40 fold-down rear seats, one could even consider substituting the Taurus for a crossover, should they be so inclined.

Review: 2010 Ford Taurus - Powertrain

Performance:

When compared to the 3.5L twin-turbocharged V6 EcoBoost engine on the SHO that put out 365-hp and 350 lb-ft of torque, the 263-hp 3.5L Duratec V6 was a bit un-dramatic. That is not to reflect negatively on the engine however, as the Taurus weighs in at a solid 4,015 lbs before the addition of an all-wheel-drive system which brings that figure up to 4,224 lb. Our test car was outfitted with the AWD and Ford’s 6-speed electronically controlled automatic overdrive with paddle activation. To put this all into perspective, it took us 7.9 seconds to reach 60 mph with the 263-hp engine.

When it comes to fuel-economy, the 2010 Ford Taurus averages 18/28 mpg when mated to a FWD system and 17/25 mpg when purchased with the optional AWD system. Our AWD 2010 Taurus Limited returned around 20 mpg during the week-long test. Those figures compare favorably to the Taurus’ competition. Also, filling up your Taurus won’t really cost you an arm or leg as Ford recommends unleaded regular fuel.

The Taurus definitely delivers on performance. Granted, the handling is less than stellar, but the breaking is satisfactory and the ride is smooth. This is just fine however, as buyers are generally not drawn to this segment to find a vehicle that will perform well under racing conditions.

Review: 2010 Ford Taurus - Rear View

Overall:

The 2010 Taurus is offered in three different trim packages; the SE, SEL, and Limited. With respective starting MSRP”s of $25,995, $27,370, and $31,770, the Taurus wins our pick hands down over its American rivals, the Chrysler 300 and the Chevy Malibu.

The 2010 Ford Taurus has transcended its role as basic family sedan; in all actuality is more akin to a Lincoln without the badging, which definitely gives the car greater appeal and makes the pricing seem just right.
