To celebrate SVT’s anniversary, a commemorative lighted sill plate will be used in the 2013 Shelby GT500 to celebrate the years of performance vehicles.

“The Shelby GT500 convertible is every bit the performer that the coupe is,” said Kerry Baldori, SVT Global Performance Vehicles chief engineer. “All of the significant changes we made in the program were instrumental in delivering a convertible that could really shine on the track but can still be driven on a daily basis.”

Power comes from the same 5.8 liter supercharged V8 engine making 650-hp with a maximum torque of 600 lb-ft – stopping power comes from a strong set of Brembo brakes. That helped the Shelby GT500 convertible with the optional Performance Package shave nearly 3.5 seconds off its lap time at the Sebring International Raceway. Like the coupe, the Ford Shelby GT500, the Performance Package can be upgraded to a Track Package, complete with an external engine oil cooler, rear differential cooler and transmission cooler for further durability.

How fast will it go from 0 to 60 mph and what will be the top speed? Well, Ford didn’t release that info so stay tuned for more.

After a trip to the Nurburgring with the 2012 Chevy Camaro ZL1, the automaker says its model will be faster then the Ford Shelby Mustang GT500.

Al Oppenheiser, Camaro Chief Engineer says that “We’ve done simulations. We predict that the ZL1 will be quicker to 60mph than the [2013] GT500… We ran the Nürburgring and released a time. Ford took the GT500, too, and never released a time. I guess you can draw your own conclusions.”

While his assumption holds only a bit of weight, what really throws us about this statement is how the stats for the two models stack up. The Camaro is heavy, at 4,120 lbs, and makes 580hp and 556 lb-ft, while the lighter 3,850lb Shelby makes 650hp and 600 lb-ft of torque.

What sets the two apart in the Camaro’s favor is the all-independent suspension is brings, over Ford’s solid rear axle. Magnetic Ride shocks can help transfer power more effectively, as well. So is Oppenheiser just talking to create a stir again? It’s possible, but no one will know for sure until they hit the track together.

Refresher: Power for the 2012 Chevrolet Camaro ZL1 comes from a LSA 6.2L supercharged V8 making 580 horsepower and 556 lb-ft of torque. The engine is matched to a Tremec TR-6060 6-speed manual transmission with a new shorter-throw shifter that improves gear changes. Ford gave big time muscle car enthusiasts a rare chance to bid on a racetrack durability prototype that was used to produce the new 2013 Ford Shelby GT500 Mustang at the 41st Annual Barrett-Jackson.

“This GT500 durability car represents the most recent collaboration between Ford SVT and Carroll Shelby,” said Ford’s President of The Americas, Mark Fields. “Working alongside Carroll, our SVT team put this durability car through some of the most demanding driving conditions at Sebring International Raceway as well as others across the country. The result of those tests is the 2013 Ford Shelby GT500, the most powerful production V8 in the world.”

When all was said and done and the hammer slammed the prototype for the 2013 Shelby GT500 brought in a winning bid of $300,000.

The proceeds from the bid will go to benefit the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation.

The Speed channel will be featuring live coverage of the 41st Annual Barrett-Jackson Collector Car Auction this coming Saturday, where Ford will be offering up the racetrack durability car that aided in the development of the production model 2013 Shelby GT500. Not only will one lucky enthusiast get to take this rare car home, but proceeds will also go to the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation.

As one of the first built with the 2010 body style, the durability model was made in 2007. It was tested at 150mph for 24 hours to make sure it could handle that level of usage and that all functions continued to run smoothly.

Inside, the durability car comes with Recaro racing seats with six-point harness belts and a full roll cage, and all of the SVT engineers involved in the project signed the underside of the hood.

“I raced on the Sebring International racetrack for many years,” said Carroll Shelby. “But my ambition was always to build my own car. So it was exciting to be back to collaborate on this GT500 durability car with the SVT guys. I’m really proud to have my name on this car. They took my dreams of what a car should be and made it a reality.”

The changes are also more than just skin deep. The GT’s 5.0L gets slightly reworked to punch out 420hp, up from 412. Additionally, the optional automatic transmission is now equipped with Ford’s SelectShift, which allows drivers to shift their own gears.

Along with the base 2013 Ford Mustang came some new special editions as well. The 2013 Ford Mustang also got a special Boss 302 package that pays homage to the original 1970 model Powered by the GT’s same 5.0L V8, the Boss 302 gets reworked to produce 444hp and 380 lb-ft of torque. To add to the package, the Boss 302 Mustang gets a unique yellow paint scheme with Boss 302 vinyl badges.

Lastly, the new 2013 Shelby Mustang GT500 was also fully revealed today at the show. Weighing in at just 3,850lbs, the new Shelby Mustang GT500 gets a revised 5.8L supercharged V8, which is good for a whopping 650hp and 600 lb-ft of torque. No performance figures were released for the GT500, but we could expect it to post some serious numbers, further proving the car’s performance value per dollar.

While no 0 to 60 mph times have been released, Ford says that the 2013 Shelby GT500 will hit a top speed of more than 200 mph. That’s supercar territory. To keep things stable, Ford engineers optimized nearly every part of the powertrain for producing additional horses. The model also gets an upgraded cooling system with a larger cooling fan, fan shroud with high-speed pressure-relief doors, a more efficient charge air cooler, a higher-flow intercooler pump and an intercooler heat exchanger with volume increased 36 percent.

For the 6-speed manual transmission, nearly every gear was revised to manage the torque. Engineers went through 35 gearing combinations until deciding on one that delivers less torque all the way through the wheels.

“It might just seem like we’re putting a bigger engine into the car. But it’s been a balanced approach through and through,” said Jamal Hameedi, SVT chief engineer. “We’ve completely redone the car to be even more sophisticated in terms of handling and control than the prior model.”

Sales of the 2013 Ford Shelby GT500 will start early next year.

FoMoCo and the UAW yesterday agree to a new 4-year contract that will add an investment of $6.2 billion to U.S. factories. Now we’re not really interested in that type of news but details of the agreement reveal some interesting news about the upcoming 2013 Ford Shelby GT500.

According to documents, the 2013 Ford Shelby GT500 will be powered by a new 5.8 liter supercharged V8. The contract between FoMoCo and the UAW shows that the Romeo Engine Assembly Plant will receive a $50 million investment to start production of a 5.8 liter supercharged V8.

The 2013 Ford Shelby GT500 will go into production the following year.

Now we’re not sure how much horsepower the 5.8 liter supercharged V8 will make but it will have to be somewhere around 580-hp to compete with the upcoming 2013 Chevrolet Camaro ZL1.

New reports suggest that Ford will be unveiling a mid-cycle refresh for the current Ford Mustang, which has been around with us since 2010. The list of updates on the 2013 Ford Mustang have yet to be released in full detail, but some insiders within Ford were able to share some of the changes.

The sources say that the Mustang in 2013 will get quite the bucket list of changes with “many styling cues from the current Shelby GT500 making their way into the design.”

To keep up with the modern times, LED lights will most likely be used for the fog lights on the lower front fascia. The insiders also said that Ford listened to the customers and enthusiasts’ complaint for the way the rear taillights were designed for 2010 and that they will “run straight across the back of the rather than angling towards the front.”

Engine wise, the 5.0L V8 and the 3.7L V6 are expected to carry over, but with a bump in horses for the V8 to better compete with the Camaro. There wasn’t any word for the V6.

The 2013 Mustang has been confirmed to make its debut later this year at the Los Angeles Auto Show in November.

Ford beat Chevrolet to the muscle car revival punch with the retro styling of the Mustang back in the early mid-2000s. Though after the Chevrolet reintroduced the Camaro not too long ago, the Mustang began to fall behind in a number of aspects. And since Chevy has continued to lead the muscle car pack with the redonkulous Chevrolet Camaro ZL1, Ford has decided to respond with plans of a GT500 ZL1 fighter. Boy, this could get interesting.

The new Shelby Mustang GT500 is plan for a rework in 2013 for a 2014 launch and sources say that it will have more horsepower than the current 550hp Camaro ZL1. Along with that statement, the sources said that the GT500 will be more or less of a last hoorah before a new Mustang comes around in 2014.

The debate can now be concluded as the sources also said that the next GT500 will retain the supercharger, something that has been a signature of tire-scorching factory Mustangs.

Just how well do the new muscle cars of 2011 compare to their predecessors? It’s a question/debate that is continuously brought up at drag strips and auto shows.

The guys at Motor Trend decided to find out for once and for all. The team gathered three modern high-spec muscle cars and put them against their glory days ancestors.

The lineup consist of the 2011 Chevrolet Camaro SS against the 1969 Chevrolet Camaro SS396; a 2011 Dodge Challenger SRT8 meets the 1970 Challenger; and the 2011 Ford Shelby Mustang GT500 Convertible meets its 1969 forebear.

2011 Ford Shelby GT500

The muscle car wars are back in nearly full force. After General Motors announced and debuted their top of the line 2012 Chevrolet Camaro ZL1, Ford obviously was hard at work to beef up its new GT500 after the new Mustang received a new(ish?) redesign.

In the photos, it doesn’t look like much – other than a Mustang that somehow came out of the back of a zebra’s bowel movements. Either way, the Ford is having the 2013 GT500 make you brown your pants with 600-plus horsepower.

Sources working with the guys at Car & Driver say that the ballpark is around 620hp from the last GT500’s supercharged V8 that was bored from 5.4L to 5.8L. A new Eaton TVS Supercharger four-lobe replaces the old Eaton M112, which can also be found on the new Audi S4, the Cadillac CTS-V, the Chevy Corvette ZR1 and even the Camaro ZL1.

Speculations for the new GT500 in terms of performance are slightly faster than the last GT500 because well, the last model was already blisteringly fast. A 12-second flat quarter mile is predicted with the new version, .4 faster than the previous and 0-60 times are expected not to change much. And that’s due to the fact that the last GT500 was already a bitch to launch consistently, and with more power and no launch-control system? Well, I’m sure you can figure out what might happen…anyone who’s seen a Mercedes-Benz CL65 will know what I’m on about.

And unfortunately, the GT500 will retain the Mustang’s traditional Achilles heel: a live rear axle.

With the ZL1’s first sales planned for next year, the GT500’s release will be about 10 months after that. With a price of $60k large, the GT500 will continue to be one of the best performance bargains.

2012 Chevrolet Camaro ZL1

Though headlines might lead one to believe that this year is all about the hybrid car, manufacturers offerings suggest that it is more than that. Although energy efficiency is more prevalent now than ever before in the car game, manufacturers are also rolling out the most powerful cars – ever.

Ford and GM both offer cars steeped in ‘American Muscle’ that deliver upwards of 500hp, with Chrysler coming in at 465hp with its Dodge Charger SRT8. Toyota is even putting out power monsters through its Lexus luxury division.

Muscle models are even collectively outselling hybrid-electrics. The high-end muscles however, such as the Camaro ZL1, Charger SRT8, and Mustang GT500 make up a small niche in the market, with most buyers opting for blander base models of these cars, all of which offer decidedly less performance.

While automakers everywhere are honing their hybrid technology, the same goes for muscle and performance vehicles. A surefire sign of the rising demand for such vehicles is evidenced by Hyundai’s recent announcement at the Chicago auto show that it will be increasing the hp offered by the Genesis by 51hp, bringing the cars total to an impressive 429.

2011 Ford Shelby GT500

Ford has released pricing details on the 2012 Shelby GT500, which remains largely unchanged from the 2011 model year version. Prices for the 2012 Ford Shelby GT500 coupe starts at $49,495 while the convertible GT500 carries a starting price of $54,495. That’s a $1,000 over the 2011 model year

Opting for leather-trimmed Recaro front bucket streets with accent stripes will run you $1,595, a Navigation and automatic climate control will cost $2,340, while a glass roof can be your from an additional $1,995. The SVT Performance Package can be added for $3,995.

Refresher: Power for the 2012 Ford Shelby GT500 comes from a new aluminum-block 5.4L supercharged V8 making 550-hp and 510 lb-ft of torque. The new engine results in a better power-to-weight ratio, improved fuel-economy, acceleration, handling and steering precision. For 2012, the Shelby GT500 gets an EPA-rated fuel-economy of 23/15 mpg (city/highway).
