This past week, Ford produced its very last Ford Ranger Sport compact pick up model, 28 years after the its first rolled off the line.

Ford’s Twin Cities Assembly plant in St. Paul, Minnesota was responsible for building the pick up, and nothing else, along with its 880 employees.

Along with the Ranger, Ford’s Cologne V-6 is also retiring after 49 long years, with 25 million units produced. So far, the models’ predecessor will not be released in the U.S., leaving American consumers with the F-150 option for the segment.

Launched in 1983, the Ford Ranger spent the years from 1987 to 2005 as the U.S.’s best selling compact truck, with a total of 7 million made. Sales were on the decline after that, with only 55,364 units sold last year, compared to the 348,358 figure for 1999.

According to a June-August newsletter from the United Auto Workers 879, the Ford Ranger pickup will end production on Dec. 22, 2011. The UAW 879 covers factory workers at FoMoCo’s Twin Cities assembly plant where the Ranger is produced.

“We are scheduled to run until December 22, 2011. The Leadership of Twin Cities Assembly Plant and its members thanked the UAW and Plant leaderships’ for their support during these difficult times for our plant,” said the newsletter.

Production of the 1983 Ford Ranger started in Jan. 1982 – which replaced the Ford Courier. Since then, more than 7 million Rangers have been built during its lifetime.

Ford has yet to announce a replacement for the U.S. market Ranger, but we’re hoping they’re keeping the Euro version in mind.

FoMoCo likes to be the best-in-class in a lot of categories – but this is one “best-in-class” achievement that really impresses us. The new Ford Ranger can go deeper than any other pickup in its segment with best-in-class water-wading capability of up to 800 mm (31.4 inches). Ford says that the 4×4 and the 4×2 Hi-Ridge Ford Ranger models can wade through deep water even while carrying a full load of cargo.

“During the extensive water testing, Ford’s latest global compact pickup was loaded to gross vehicle mass –as heavy as it possibly could be – so that Ranger was riding at the lowest possible height,” Ford said. “Most customers would not be carrying so much weight when fording rivers or floods but Ranger’s ability to do so provides additional peace of mind.”

Click here for more news on the Ford Ranger.

Ford engineers tested the ranger over a variety of water depths and speeds and found strategic locations for key electrical components and air inlets to deliver the class-leading attribute.

“When we go through the water bath, we’re looking out for every possible functional failure in the vehicle. The most critical one would be if water was sucked through the air intake into the engine, resulting in hydro-lock, which can bend the piston’s connecting rods and potentially destroy the entire engine,” said Tom Dohrmann, the development engineer in charge of Ranger’s water management.

Ford has asked its dealers not to order any full-size pickup or SUV in Tuxedo Black because of a problem getting a paint ingredient from a supplier in Japan. Ford is also cutting back on its use of Tuxedo Black on mid-size SUVs and the Ford Taurus and Lincoln MKS.

Apparently the red color is also a problem, Ford is cutting back, but not stopping, three shades of red on SuperDuty F-Series pickups, Ranger, Focus, Econoline vans and the Lincoln Navigator.

Who’s this Japanese supplier? No idea, but they provide a patented substance called Xirallic, which is used to give the red and black paints a slight metallic glitter.

FoMoCo is going to be issuing two new recalls covering more than 30,000 vehicles due to potential electrical issues and fuel leaks. One of the recalls is to reinspect a batch of cars that was recalled in late December due to faulty software.

23,688 2010 Ford Rangers equipped with 2.3L engines are being called in to be inspected for fuel line chafing. The re-inspection involves some 2011 Ford F-150, F-250, F-350, F-450, F-550, Edge and Lincoln MKX vehicles that had been inspected under a recall announced in late December by Ford.

Ford said the vehicles being re-recalled use a custom software routine to read suspect Body Control Module serial number to determine which ones needed replacement. The software was not reading correctly and was unable to identify a BCM that required replacement.

Ford said that there were no known incidents related to the issues, and 2,000 Ranger trucks in Canada, and 1,100 2011 models also in Canada were also subject to recall.

Press Release:

ALL-NEW HIGH-TECH FORD RANGER WILDTRAK MAKES GLOBAL DEBUT IN GENEVA

Range-topping Ford Ranger Wildtrak model revealed

New engines include Dagenham’s 2.2-litre Duratorq TDCi diesel

Exceptional towing capability of up to 3350 kg and increased payload capacity

Ranger Wildtrak among the most high-tech compact pickups with smart technologies such as Bluetooth® Voice Control and Rear View Camera system

Best-in-class water-wading capability of up to 800 mm and a ground clearance of up to 230 mm

On sale in Britain in November 2011

GENEVA, 28 Feb, 2011 – The all-new Ford Ranger Wildtrak makes its global debut at the 2011 Geneva Motor Show, a sporty compact pick-up that delivers impressive power and safety, excellent fuel efficiency and significant capability. It exudes a powerful presence bolstered by the latest in-car comfort and technologies.

Aiming to deliver class-leading safety, new Ranger utilises a whole suite of technologies, including Electronic Stability Program (ESP), to keep its wheels sturdily planted on the road under all conditions. Despite being an enormously capable vehicle, the Ranger is also fitted with technologies such as satellite navigation and Bluetooth® voice control, more commonly found on premium or luxury cars.

Building on Ranger’s long-standing heritage of capability, the all-new model extends Ford’s credibility further, with selected European versions achieving a best-in-class towing capacity of 3350 kg.

New from the ground up – with everything changed except its name – new Ranger is the first commercial vehicle to be built under the One Ford strategy as part of a global product programme, bringing together the full engineering expertise of Ford around the world.

Designed and developed in Australia, Ranger will be offered as a complete family of compact pick-ups with three different cab body styles, 4×2 and 4×4 drive trains, two ride heights and up to four series choices to suit every pocket and market. It will be produced in Thailand, South Africa and Argentina for more than 180 markets worldwide.

Ranger Wildtrack styling

The aggressive and sporty stance of the new Ranger line-up is enhanced for the range-topper, Wildtrak. There is a unique colour split on the front and designers masked out the feature line on the fascia and contrasted it by highlighting the lower intake. The same accent colours were used on the side mirrors, door handles and side air vents to give the vehicle a dark sporty look.

Sitting high on 18-inch alloy wheels, the Wildtrak also comes with a roof rack and a sports hoop which enhance its profile. Exclusive Wildtrak badging and graphics help to set it apart from other lifestyle vehicles.

Car-like levels of comfort and features

The purposeful interior of the Wildtrak echoes the dark sporty look of the outside. A special hydrographic finish on the centre console around the audio is reminiscent of strong but lightweight materials like carbon fibre.

The seat trim – a combination of leather and woven cloth inspired by sportswear with ventilated sections – provides lateral support and confidence even on rough terrain. Contrast stitching and a discreet strip on the seat upper and bolster, all in distinctive Wildtrak Orange, accentuate the premium feel of the interior.

The cabin of Ranger has been stretched to provide segment-leading spaciousness and comfort. Three passengers can easily fit in the second row of the Wildtrak, for instance. It offers ample knee room and better foot clearance between the B-pillar and the seat. This means that getting in and out of the new Ranger is easier than ever for rear-seat passengers.

With 23 storage spaces in the cabin, Ranger offers more practical stowage than any competitor. A deep centre console bin will keep up to six cans of beverage cool, while the glove box is large enough to accommodate a 16-inch laptop computer. Ample storage for mobile phones and other small items can be found in the console.

Also poised to be a leader in innovation, Ranger Wildtrak comes with Bluetooth®audio streaming, USB and iPod connectivity. There is voice control over the radio, CD, iPod, USB, air-conditioning and phone. It also offers a five-inch colour screen with satellite navigation.

More power, more torque

There is a choice of two state-of-the-art common-rail Ford Duratorq TDCi diesels and new fuel-efficient six-speed transmissions that serve up more power and torque.

The new, Dagenham-built, 2.2-litre four-cylinder diesel delivers peak torque output of 375 Nm and power output of 150 PS, whilst a highly responsive and efficient new 3.2-litre 5-cylinder diesel produces a powerful 470 Nm of torque is power rated at 200PS. Both new powertrains have been developed and refined to deliver excellent fuel economy that is among the best in class. Fitted with an 80-litre fuel tank, Ranger is also expected to have one of the longest ranges in its segment.

New Ranger also features smart Ford technologies such as Adaptive Automatic Mode, which adapts gear shifts according to driving style and Grade Control Logic, which automatically downshifts when driving downhill and the brake pedal is depressed. This feature prevents the transmission from changing to a higher gear.

Press Release:

All-New Mazda BT-50

“Active Lifestyle Vehicle”

Mazda is proud to announce a brand new direction in the utility market.

At this year’s Australian International Motor Show in Sydney, Mazda is unveiling the All-New BT-50 that signifies a new direction in the utility segment. It was developed as an “Active lifestyle vehicle,” and is intended to further extend the appeal of a utility from traditional business users to a wide range of customers, including families and pleasure-seekers.

The current BT-50 is Mazda’s only offering in the utility segment. It is an established one-tonne utility that has won numerous awards and gained a strong following all over the world. In developing the new model, Mazda intended to expand its appeal to customers who lead active lifestyles and have needs that cannot be met by conventional utilities. It offers all the functionality required for business use combined with passenger car-like comfort for family use; and for active customers in Australia and Europe, it is the perfect answer for all kinds of outdoor leisure activities. In this way, the new BT-50 has been developed to fulfill the varied requirements of customers in every market.

To ensure all these aims were met, the all-new BT-50 was developed under the theme “Active lifestyle vehicle.” The result is a utility that offers unique value; it has refined and expressive styling; a comfortable, high quality interior; a smooth ride with the feel of a passenger car; sporty and responsive driving dynamics that reflect Mazda’s DNA; and outstanding environmental and safety performance.

Design: “Sophisticated Beast”

We wanted to design a truck that car lovers would be deeply pleased with and proud to own. We targeted a unique and expressive design that people would find desirable, and we also wanted it to be seen as strong and dependable. This led us to define the design concept as a “Sophisticated Beast.”

As Ryo Yanagisawa, chief designer of the all-new BT-50, explains: “Mazda’s brand message is Zoom-Zoom, which refers to the emotion of motion first experienced as a child. With the All-New BT-50, we aimed to express this emotion through the design, and we drew a lot of inspiration from various “movements” in the world around us. For example, we had a photograph of a lion. He looked like a magnificent predator with his muscles all bunching up as though he was about to pounce on his prey. His sinews were stretched taut ready to strike, and his mane framed a sharp, masculine countenance that seemed to say, ‘I am the proud king of the beasts!’ In profile, that lion appeared to be both intelligent and powerful. I really wanted the design of the truck to project that kind of image. This kind of inspiration was the basis of the emotional design that we worked so hard to achieve with the all-new BT-50.”

Exterior ““ Lively and Imposing Styling

Without detracting from the strength or the level of functionality, we wanted to give the exterior of the All-New BT-50 an athletic design, overflowing with movement, that would make people immediately want to get in and drive. The crisp lines will have owners looking on with pride.

The finished car has a beauty and individuality that can be recognized at a glance from any angle, even up to 100 meters away.

* Dynamic wedge-shaped proportions evoke an image of a large carnivore about to pounce on its unsuspecting prey. This is unlike any other utility.

* Casting off the conventional boxy image of a utility, sporty and dynamic lines are in tune with the rest of Mazda’s passenger vehicle lineup.

* Further evolving Mazda’s traditional prominent fenders, muscular lines flow from the fenders along the body sides.

A Front Fascia with a Bold, Overwhelming Presence and an Individual Rear End

* Mazda’s family face, the five-point grille, is further evolved for a more imposing expression with the headlights and a chrome crossbar forming a large pentagon.

* The headlights have a bold boomerang shape, elaborate details and a functional beauty.

* A first in the segment – the taillights are stretched horizontally, reaching around the corners and across the tailgate, for a sporty and refined rear view that is similar to a premium SUV.

Interior ““ A Sporty and Personal Space

We wanted to give the interior of the All-New Mazda BT-50 a more sporty and personal feel to complement the dynamic exterior image, and create a comfortable space to rival Mazda’s current passenger car standard. The cockpit is designed to wrap around the driver and provide an environment that supports enthusiastic driving. It raises anticipation for a sporty and responsive driving experience that goes beyond any conventional utility.

* The flowing design smoothly connects the center of the instrument panel to the raised center console, which has never before been seen in a pickup truck.

* The dashboard has an asymmetric design to create optimal space on each side; it reassuringly wraps around the driver and provides an open space for the passenger.

* Four bold metallic panel strips on the door trim and sides of the center console express dynamism and seem to be supporting the interior space.

* A metallic outline highlights the two cylindrical meters and connects them via a center strip to improve readability and enhance the sporty, driver-oriented impression of the instrument panel.

* The audio control panel and the climate control switch panel, which has independent driver- and passenger-side temperature controls, form a beautifully designed human interface.

With modern and refined styling both inside and out, the All-New Mazda BT-50 will raise the bar in the utility segment and for the first time provide a realistic alternative to the family wagon and 4×4 SUV.

SYDNEY, October 15, 2010 ““ The all-new Ford Ranger ““ the latest in a wave of global vehicles ““ makes its worldwide debut today at the Australian International Motor Show. The all-new Ranger has a powerful presence and promises to give pickup truck owners more can-do capability and a transformed truck ownership experience.

From impressive gains in power and safety to exceptional towing capability, the next-generation Ford Ranger emerges as a clear segment leader. It not only builds on the tremendous Ranger heritage of pickup truck capability, but it also gives truck owners a spacious, comfortable, feature-filled interior and sophisticated driving experience they would expect to find only in a car.

Amongst the most high-tech in its segment, Ranger is the impressive result of an all-new global compact pickup truck platform from Ford ““ the latest to emerge under the company”s One Ford initiative ““ and Mazda. It replaces two previous-generation compact truck platforms currently in production to present a new face of Built Ford Tough to customers around the world.

Built on innovation, it boasts a list of technologies and features to lead the segment ““ including a new Rearview Camera System, Rear Park Assist, Trailer Sway Control and Adaptive Load Control. Ford plans to reveal even more new Ranger technologies in the coming months.

Destined for sale across five continents and more than 180 markets, Ranger will be offered as a complete family of compact trucks ““ with three different cab body styles, 4×2 and 4×4 drivetrains, two ride heights and up to five series choices, depending on the market.

“We know trucks so we leveraged our best expertise from around the globe to create the all-new Ford Ranger,” said Derrick Kuzak, group vice president, Global Product Development. ”Focusing our global resources on a single new compact pickup truck platform meant we could deliver significant improvements, technologies and features that owners will value, along with impressive fuel economy that alone will be a reason to buy.”

The all-new Ranger reflects Ford”s insight into compact pickup buyers around the world and their evolving wants.

“Compact pickups are hugely important to customers in many regions of the world,” said Jim Farley, group vice president, Marketing, Sales and Service. “For many, it”s the only vehicle in a household headed by a hard-working person others depend on. These people need a truck that can get the job done ““ and they”ll be amazed how Ranger”s smart new technologies make the job easier. And increasingly, they”re also looking for the kinds of features, technologies, spaciousness and refinement you”d expect in a car, and Ranger is just as innovative here.”

All-new model builds on strong heritage
For nearly 20 years,Ranger has been one of Ford”s most popular pickups across the globe. It has provided millions of buyers with Ford Tough Truck capabilities ““ hauling heavy payloads, pulling trailers and absorbing punishment on the roughest roads. The all-new Ford Ranger now has even more capability but has been transformed into a taut, toned and muscular contemporary shape exuding strength and toughness.

With an all-new chassis frame, front and rear suspension and steering system, Ranger delivers more payload and outstanding towing capability. It is powered by a choice of three new, fuel-efficient powertrains, including two state-of-the-art common-rail Ford Duratorq TDCi diesels and new fuel-efficient six-speed transmissions. Add in more chassis and safety technologies, and the story of Ranger pickup truck leadership becomes as vivid as its powerful, purposeful stance.

Ranger has the flexibility to handle every chore at home or on the job.

Its transformation is perhaps most vivid in the all-new interior, which brings new levels of spaciousness to the compact pickup ownership experience. The all-new Ranger offers a comfortable and quiet ride, along with a level of features and technologies that make it second-to-none.

The flagship of the new range is the Ford Ranger XLT Double Cab model unveiled in Sydney in lustrous Aurora Blue, showcasing a gutsy fuel-efficient new 2.2-litre Ford Duratorq TDCi 110 kW (150 PS) diesel engine with an impressive 375 Nm of available torque.

“This new Ranger we”re revealing to the world today is compelling evidence of what we can achieve by harnessing the power of One Ford,” said Gary Boes, vehicle line director for Ford”s new compact truck platform.

“The new Ranger responds to what pickup truck owners all around the world want in a vehicle and it was designed and engineered by a team with unrivalled truck expertise. It”s being tested in the most demanding conditions in the most gruelling testing environments on five continents to prove its world-class credentials. Ranger respects truck owners and it will earn their respect day in and day out,” Boes said.

“˜21st Century Tough” styling inside and out
The all-new Ford Ranger creates a bold and purposeful presence, with a fresh, contemporary exterior design that exudes the famous Built Ford Tough personality. Designers call the look “˜21st Century Tough”.

Taut, toned muscularity and a bold, confident stance instantly signal the strength and capability of an ultra-modern pickup truck. Yet it also communicates a transformed, more sophisticated and refined style that appeals to a new generation of truck owners.

“In many areas of the world, the role of Ranger has changed,” said Craig Metros, chief designer. “It still has to be a work vehicle with a durable interior and the ability to carry a heavy payload, but it also serves a dual role with refinement, comfort and more consumer-friendly features topping the list for many buyers.”

Metros said extensive research among truck customers around the world revealed surprising similarities in taste and design expectations.

While needs and expectations may differ in the 180 markets where it will be sold, the new Ranger Tough Truck design resonates around the world.

“Good design is long lasting and transcends all markets,” said Metros. “Cute gimmicks don”t cut it with this group. It”s a robust truck that gets the job done, first and foremost.”

According to Metros, Ranger looks very tough but not in the more chiselled style of Ford”s larger North American F-Series trucks. The contemporary design will be just as at home on city streets outside trendy restaurants in Cologne or Melbourne as it is in the Outback or on a luxury property development site.

Reflecting the diverse uses of compact pickups around the world, the all-new Ford Ranger product range will offer everything from basic work trucks with hose-out interiors to high-series models, such as the Ranger Limited and Ranger Wildtrak, both yet to be revealed.

The best of Ford”s design language also have been applied to the interior. Borrowing cues from ergonomically-designed power tools like DEWALT®1, and encasing instruments in a protective shell like a G-Shock®2 watch, designers were inspired to blend form and function while ensuring the instruments are clearly visible for the driver.

Inside, trim panels are designed to be easily substituted. A single basic instrument panel is assembled off-line and simply installed in the vehicle. While the trim styles vary, all parts are designed to be interchangeable.

“Look closely and you”ll see that regardless of the model, we didn”t stray from the basic layout and design,” Metros explained. “All the exterior and interior shapes and panels are identical.”

Small details received careful attention to ensure quality and craftsmanship in every model. From graining on interior panels to tonal colour choices, the execution exudes a premium feel throughout the interior.

On the instrument panel, designs were used that would easily accept modular parts ““ such as radios, and heating and ventilation controls ““ to ensure build quality was maintained to eliminate any unsightly gaps.

According to Debbie Pascoe, Ford”s colour and trim design manager, the materials used throughout the cabin have to be especially durable. Seats have to be comfortable but also able to withstand commercial customer usage.

“The typical pickup driver needs space and we designed an interior that is comfortable, easy to slide in and out of, with controls that are larger to accommodate work gloves, for example. When you design a truck interior, special considerations have to be taken to ensure the cabin will be just as durable as the rest of the vehicle. But tough doesn”t have to mean rough,” she said.

Interior materials are subjected to constant abuse and have to withstand punishing rigours not seen in a passenger car. Seating materials must be able to take a beating from tools that are flung into the cabin or forgotten in a back pocket. Door panels can”t be easily scuffed or scratched by dirty boots. And truck customers increasingly want an interior that”s stylish and comfortable for personal use.

“We haven”t forgotten that many of these vehicles are not only used for work but are also primary transportation in many areas of the world as the family vehicle,” Pascoe said.

Three passengers can easily fit into the second row of the new Ranger Double Cab. It offers ample knee clearance and better foot clearance between the B-pillar and the seat. That means getting in and out of the new Ranger has never been easier for rear-seat passengers.

Ample storage is provided throughout the interior cabin with up to 20 storage locations. Double Cab pockets in all four doors can easily fit water bottles and, on selected models, a deep centre console keeps beverages cool. The glove box is large enough to accommodate a laptop computer. Storage for mobile phones and other small items can be found in the console.

Underneath the rear seats, a convenient hidden storage area for electronic items and small packages is provided, while on selected Ranger Double Cab models, an armrest in the centre rear seatback fold includes two cup holders.

To help reduce Ranger”s ownership costs, especially at the fuel pump, a wide range of design features were optimised to improve fuel efficiency. Using the same leading-edge simulation technology as Formula One teams, aerodynamicists performed more than 1000 full-vehicle aerodynamic simulations to perfect the shape of the vehicle.

Using this technology, engineers demonstrated that with a hard line at the fender top, wind flow was divided and resistance lowered. The backlight was positioned more vertically, A-pillars optimised and a small spoiler was added to the top of the tailgate. A front airdam plays a significant role in controlling the airflow underneath the vehicle, leading to a significant reduction in the drag coefficient.

“Decreasing wind resistance was a start. Small incremental gains in fuel efficiency quickly add up and help meet fuel economy targets,” Metros said.

More muscle under the bonnet ““ three new engines
With a body that is lean and taut, the muscle lies beneath the bonnet. The all-new Ranger powertrains have been engineered to give customers an uncompromised combination of power and torque.

Ranger introduces three new engines to Ford”s compact pickup truck range globally:

* A new 2.2-litre Ford Duratorq TDCi I4 diesel engine with peak torque output of 375 Nm and power output of 110 kW (150 PS).
* A highly responsive and efficient new 3.2-litre Ford Duratorq TDCi I5 diesel engine with a powerful 470 Nm of torque and power rated at 147 kW (200 PS).
* A 2.5-litre Ford Duratec I4 petrol engine with more power at 122 kW (166 PS). It can be configured for E100 flexible fuel capability or aftermarket upfitted to run on CNG or LPG.

“This all-new engine family demonstrates our commitment to making Ranger the best option for today”s pickup truck customer,” said John Tatge, Ranger chief programme engineer. “We”re bringing the best engine technology from the Ford powertrain range to make Ranger the clear choice for capability and fuel economy, particularly with our world-class Duratorq diesels. Their torque makes Ranger the truck to own.”

Developed in Australia and tested and validated around the world, Ranger powerplants are designed to run on a variety of locally blended fuels with different octane ratings.

Selected Ranger powertrains benefit from the advantages of lower engine rpm and reduced wear and tear, with six-speed automatic and manual transmissions available across selected models. Increased fuel economy, coupled with other advances to facilitate maintenance and serviceability, help reduce annual ownership cost.

“The all-new Ford Ranger is a driver”s pickup truck,” said Rob Sharples, powertrain programme team leader. “It”s inviting to drive, and all of its driver inputs and vehicle controls work together in harmony.”

Transmissions and final drive ratios have been carefully matched to deliver exceptional acceleration, excellent fuel efficiency and a quiet ride.

The new Ford 6R80 six-speed automatic transmission has been extensively tuned to deliver smooth, quick shifts almost imperceptibly to the driver, reinforcing the car-like refinement of the new Ranger. In Normal mode, the calibration focuses on comfort and fuel economy. For sportier driving, a quick flick of the shifter changes the transmission into Sport mode. This provides later shift points and the driver can manually select gears through a forward (downshift) or rearward (upshift) movement.

It also features another smart Ford technology ““ Grade Control Logic. It automatically downshifts on a downhill grade when sufficient brake pressure is sensed, adding to the all-new Ranger”s towing and hauling capabilities.

The 6R80 automatic transmission has been designed for both 4×2 and 4×4 versions. It is lightweight and includes strengthened internals that have been designed and tested to Ford”s global commercial vehicle standards.

Ranger can also be fitted with Ford MT82 six-speed manual transmission with its short, car-like shifter ““ well-positioned ergonomically for the driver ““ that provides crisp, precise shifting matched perfectly to the generous torque output of the new diesels. An upshift indicator in the instrument panel helps coach drivers on the best gearing for fuel economy.

The 2.5-litre petrol engine is offered standard with the proven Ford MT75 five-speed manual transmission.

The all-new Ranger four-wheel drive models are equipped with a well-proven electronically controlled transfer case that allow drivers to shift from 4×2 to 4×4 anytime via an electronic switch conveniently located on the console. If extra torque or additional downhill braking is needed, low-range gearing also can be enabled.

Select four-wheel-drive Rangers also can be equipped with either an electric locking differential or a limited slip differential in a wide array of final drive ratios.

While fuel economy certification will take place closer to the start of production, Ford is forecasting that the new Ranger powertrain range will contribute to significant savings at the pump.

New levels of ride quality and chassis control
The same level of detail that makes Ranger stand out in a crowd will set it apart from the competition with an entirely new chassis that provides even more capability along with car-like comfort, reduced steering effort, more precise handling and better on-road stability.

Off-road performance has been improved with a stiffer frame, ground clearance of up to 232 millimetres and driveline components that have been strategically mounted above the frame rail and out of harm”s way.

Despite an increased 3220-millimetre wheelbase ““ and wider track for the 4×4 model of 1560 millimetres and 4×2 model of 1590 millimetres at the front and rear ““ the all-new Ranger”s turning circle makes it easily manoeuvrable in parking and on narrow city streets. Its rack-and-pinion steering system has been thoroughly designed to provide robust performance while delivering more precise steering.

Up front, the entire suspension is brand new. A new coil-over-strut suspension allows for better tuning of the upper and lower wishbone design. The suspension set-up, while similar for two- and four-wheel drive models, has unique capabilities and has been tuned with specific damper valving and spring rates on all models to compensate for weight, centre of gravity, engine torque and drive distribution.

At the rear, an entirely new suspension system provides a smooth, firm comfortable ride with a rear leaf suspension design that has been carefully tuned for a variety of road conditions while still delivering outstanding payload capacity.

The rear suspension also provides Ranger with a firmly planted ride for high-speed driving on dirt roads, common in South America, with reduced sway and less vehicle “˜skate” on corrugated or rough surfaces.

Considering customers in areas of the world where monsoons cause frequent flooding, Ranger”s key electrical components and air inlets are strategically placed high in the engine compartment. This contributes to impressive water-wading capability.

Offering the biggest brakes in class, stopping power for Ranger is excellent.

All Ranger models are equipped with larger front rotors measuring 302-by-32 millimetres and twin-piston callipers. The brake calliper features a pair of phenolic pistons which reduce weight and improve thermal performance.

Two-wheel-drive vehicles use a 270-by-55-millimetre rear drum, whilst the Hi-Rider and 4×4 vehicles use a 295-by-55-millimetre rear drum.

The brake system has been subjected to extreme environmental conditions and customer driving requirements ““ at minus 30 degrees Celsius in Sweden, in the intense heat in California”s Death Valley, the congestion of city traffic, the German Autobahn and the unforgiving roads of the Australian Outback.

The largest brake system in segment provides excellent fade resistance, particularly with maximum payload. While competitive systems start to fade and stopping distances increase, the Ranger is engineered to keep performing.

For superior braking performance, Ranger is available with Ford”s Electronic Stability Program (ESP) system that includes four-wheel traction control, yaw control and roll-over mitigation.

Invisible to the driver, the ESP system includes sensors located at all four wheels that independently monitor wheel speed and detect wheel slip during acceleration or braking. If a slip is detected or the vehicle is swerving (yaw), brakes are individually applied to ensure the vehicle stays on its intended path.

Under extreme conditions, the Traction Control System reduces engine torque by managing spark and fuel delivery.

The top level brake system includes Emergency Brake Assist to provide maximum boost for the Anti-Lock Brake System (ABS) and is automatically triggered during panic stop situations. Electronic Brakeforce Distribution accurately maintains brake pressure in rear brake lines to help provide decreased stopping distances. Flashing hazard lights automatically alert following vehicles when an ABS stop is triggered.

Among segment leaders with an exceptional towing capacity, sure-footed grip and stability is ensured with the available Trailer Sway Mitigation and Adaptive Load Control.

If a trailer begins to sway, brakes are selectively applied to slow down the truck-and-trailer combination. To ensure that Ranger maintains a stable ride when carrying full loads of cargo, Adaptive Load Control determines the payload and applies the necessary measures to maintain a straight and level ride.

Like all contemporary Ford products, the all-new Ranger is engineered to provide comprehensive safety protection, starting with a highly protective body structure utilising high-strength steel throughout to protect occupants in the event of a collision.

Engineers used sophisticated computer modelling to hone the crashworthiness of the all-new Ranger. This included more than 9000 full-vehicle crash simulations before the first prototype vehicle was subjected to a physical crash test.

The all-new Ford Ranger offers new passive safety technologies, including the availability of side curtain airbags on all cab styles for the first time.

Other new Ranger technologies ““ including Rear Park Assist and new Rearview Camera system ““ not only aid pickup drivers in everyday use, but also help them avoid potential contact with pedestrians.

Payload capabilities
Carrying a crew of five? Headed to the job site with large appliances, building supplies, sand or gravel? Loaded with produce for sale at the local farmer”s market? Whatever the payload, all are easily stored within the cargo box of the new Ford Ranger double cab ““ even with a full passenger load.

Measuring 1549 millimetres long, 511 millimetres high and with a maximum cargo width of 1560 millimetres, the cargo box of the double cab is more than 100 millimetres wider. Volume is an impressive 1.21 cubic metres.

Width between the wheel arches is 1139 millimetres on all models and special provisions are provided in the cargo box to place struts of lumber in pockets that are located above the wheel arch. This allows plywood or sheet rock to be stacked flat. Width at the rear tailgate opening at the top of the box is 1330 millimetres.

New from the ground up ““ more to come
It”s not often that engineers and designers have the opportunity to build a new pickup truck from the ground up, and the all-new Ranger is evidence of how Ford seized that opportunity.

When Ranger begins production in less than a year, it will set new benchmarks in many categories including a stand-out design, road manners that are smooth and refined, a chassis that is off-road capable and powertrains that are fuel efficient, clean and live up to the global Built Ford Tough promise.

The new Ranger will be manufactured around the world in three volume production sites geared for regional reach, especially in growth regions.

A progressive production ramp-up is slated to begin next summer (Northern Hemisphere) in Rayong, Thailand, for the Asia Pacific region. Ford is transforming plants in Argentina and South Africa for additional capacity to eventually serve other key regions as the launch cadence progresses. The new manufacturing strategy for the single global compact truck platform will drive new levels of product commonality for the Ford Ranger all around the globe.

Although not planned for introduction in the United States or Canada, the all-new Ranger will eventually be marketed in 180 countries, making it one of Ford”s farthest reaching products. This reflects the importance of compact pickup trucks to consumers in many parts of the world and the significance of the Ranger in Ford”s global product portfolio.

Ranger also symbolises how Ford is leveraging its global product resources more efficiently. Its product development team was headquartered in Melbourne, Australia. The full-range product development facilities at Ford”s Melbourne-based Broadmeadows Complex and nearby proving ground facilities in Geelong became an ideal base for the global Ranger team.

“One Ford brought all of our strengths together to create the all-new Ranger,” Kuzak said. “When you look at how important compact trucks are around the world, it was the ideal candidate to be our next global product.”

Ford will progressively reveal more members of the Ranger family in coming months.

At the 2010 Australian International Motor Show in October, FoMoCo will take the covers off of the new next-generation Ford Ranger, a compact pickup developed in Australia for sale in 180 global market – except the United States and Canada.

“Australia has played a leading role in the development of this latest global Ford product,” said Joe Hinrichs, president, Ford Asia Pacific and Africa. “Ranger is symbolic of how our great product development capability is being leveraged by the ONE Ford plan like never before.”

While no technical specs have been released, Ford says the new Ranger will return “impressive gains in power and fuel economy.” All we’re getting today is this teaser of the grille.

So why no love for the U.S. market?

“There are no plans for that at this time,” said Derrick Kuzak, Ford”s group vice president of global product development. The new Ranger is our global compact pickup truck that serves the world. It’s an all-new truck with new powertrains that promise truck leadership in markets outside of North America.”

Basically Ford feels that the F-150 lineup is strong enough and the Ranger would only eat up sales of its best-selling model.

Now, under the lights at the Sydney Convention and Exhibition Centre, the covers will come off to reveal a dazzlingly contemporary new look for the future of Ford Ranger pickup truck capability. It makes a powerful promise ““ backed by Ford”s Australian and global expertise ““ to owners around the world.

From impressive gains in power and fuel economy ““ the result of its new engine family ““ to outstanding pickup truck capability that includes exceptional towing and payload capacity, the next-generation Ford Ranger emerges as a clear segment leader. It not only builds on the tremendous Ranger heritage of capability, but it also gives owners a spacious, comfortable, feature-filled interior and sophisticated driving experience that they would expect only from a car.

The wait is over: Introducing the hot Ford Focus RS
There”s even more big news from Ford at the show, which marks the introduction in Australia of the renowned Focus RS.

The buzz of excitement surrounding Focus RS has been growing since Ford announced recently that it would be offering a limited number of the legendary hot hatch for sale in Australia.

With only 315 Focus RS models being made available to the clamouring enthusiast community, the Sydney show may be the best place to lay eyes on one. First introduced in Europe last year, Focus RS has won a host of motoring awards and widespread critical acclaim for its outstanding combination of high-performance road car technology and everyday Focus practicality.

“The show will be a great opportunity to see the car that”s set to spawn a whole new generation of performance car enthusiasts,” said Marin Burela, president and CEO, Ford Australia.

The hot-performing three-door hatch boasts a turbocharged five-cylinder engine that develops near V8 performance levels with 224 kW (305 PS) of power and 440 Nm of torque.

Blowing the covers off the new GT
The Ford performance story will also continue at the show, with Ford Performance Vehicles (FPV) launching its first-ever supercharged V8 engine to be fitted to its hero GT and new GS model ranges.

The new engine is based on the lightweight Mustang V8 but has been developed locally for FPV”s Falcon-based performance models.

FPV”s supercharged models join its turbocharged six-cylinder F6 range in Australia”s most respected high-performance model lineup.

Ford Fiesta range to expand
Visitors to the Australian International Motor Show will see the debut of the newest members of the Ford Fiesta range, with the new Fiesta sedan and diesel models making their appearance.

Available in both diesel and petrol versions, the four-door model will add to Ford”s successful Fiesta range and is expected to introduce even more new customers to the Fiesta lineup.

“Fiesta has been extremely successful in Australia,” said Burela. “Since its launch in early 2009, Ford”s share of the light car segment has grown from 4.7 percent to 8.3 percent. We fully expect that the new sedan and diesel variants will attract even more new customers to the Fiesta range, along with the availability of the new 1.6-litre PowerShift automatic transmission.”

Visitors to the 2010 Australian International Motor Show can experience the exciting lineup of Ford vehicles, along with a host of interactive activities for motoring enthusiasts and families, from October 15-24 at the Sydney Convention and Exhibition Centre.

FoMoCo and Mazda Motor Corporations announced today that they will invest $350 million in their AutoAlliance Thailand joint venture to support the production of next-generation pickups. The investment will support the production of a new Mazda and Ford compact pickup that will start in mid-2011.

“The investment will support facility upgrades and supplier tooling for the production of Mazda and Ford”s next generation compact pickup trucks,” both companies said in a statement. “Once completed, this will increase Mazda and Ford”s total joint investment in the AutoAlliance Thailand facility to more than US$1.85 billion since operations began in 1995.”

“Today”s investment announcement marks another important step forward in AAT”s development as a state-of-the-art manufacturing hub,” said Toshinori Kusuhashi, president, AutoAlliance Thailand. “Through the ongoing support of the Thai government, Thailand”s automotive industry has continued to grow and become more efficient, enabling AAT to build and export world-class pickup trucks and cars. This new investment will enable us to continue to enhance the one-ton pickup”s reputation as product champion of Thailand”s automotive industry.”

The companies said that the investment will also allocate resources to training and development to ensure that AAT employees have the skills to meet the high-standard the new compact pickup truck program will require.

Is Ford and Mazda talking about the next-generation Ford Ranger and Mazda BT-50 when they say compact pickup? We’ll find soon enough.

Ford has issued a recall on certain 2010 Ranger pickups built from June 8, 2009 through February, 2, 2010 equipped with a manual transmission. The recall concerns an issue with the parking brake cable that can become disconnected from the right rear actuator during cold weather.

“This may occur when the parking brake is released if wet parking brake shoes have frozen in the applied position,” NHTSA said in a statement. “If the right rear parking brake cable becomes disconnected, the pedal will have extended travel and may not fully apply the brake.”

To fix the issue, dealers will install a revised right rear parking brake actuator to prevent cable disconnection. Owners can contact Ford at 1-866-436-7332 for more info.

If you were one of the many compact car lovers that were excited when earlier reports of a Ford Ka for the U.S. started showing up – we’ve got some bad news for you this Monday morning. FoMoCo CEO Alan Mulally said that the Ford Ka minicar and the new Ford Ranger pickup will not come to the United States.

Mulally said that the Ka has been deemed to small for our American taste and the Fiesta is probably the smallest Ford will ever go on the stateside.

“Our view is that Fiesta is about the smallest vehicle that we think will be a real success in the United States,” Mulally told Automotive News.

The global Ford Ranger is a new compact pickup that is different from the current Ranger sold here. Production of the U.S. Ford ranger is scheduled to end in 2011. Ford is currently looking at options for a replacement.

We’re not sure why Ford refuses to redesign the U.S. spec two-door Ford Ranger pickup. Nonetheless, across the Atlantic, Ford has just unveiled the new 2010 Ford Ranger for Europe with two additional doors and its “kinetic” design theme.

Influenced by the Ford Ranger Max Concept, the 2010 Ford Ranger offers seating for up to 5-passengers and a towing capacity of 6,600 lbs.

It will be available in three body-configurations with a choice of a 143-hp 2.5L or 156-hp 3.0L TDCi turbo diesel engines. They will be mated to a 5-speed manual transmission as standard or a 5-speed automatic as an option.

Press Release:

NEW FORD Ranger: READY TO PLAY AS HARD AS IT WORKS

    – Fresh new look for Ford’s popular Ranger pick-up
– Ranger’s ‘Tough Truck’ capability and seating for up to five offers customers an all-round pick-up well equipped for leisure and the work environment
– Renowned Ranger driving dynamics and high build quality combine with best-in-class towing capacity
– New Ranger is available in three body configurations with choice of two fuel-efficient 2.5- and 3.0-litre TDCi turbo diesel engines with five-speed manual or five-speed automatic transmissions
– New Ranger now also available with automatic transmission paired with the 2.5-litre TDCi engine
– Distinctive and comprehensive series choice, available as 4×2 or 4×4
– New Ranger makes its European debut at the Geneva Motor Show

COLOGNE, February 18, 2009 ““ The new Ford Ranger makes its European debut at the 2009 Geneva Motor Show, combining sleek and modern exterior design with genuine toughness and durability. Ford Ranger plays as hard as it works, both on and off-road.

“The Ford Ranger nameplate is already established in more than 100 markets around the world,” said Henrik Nenzen, Ford of Europe’s Director of Commercial Vehicle Marketing and Sales. “The new
model delivers even more style, comfort and features, making it an ideal choice for a family activity weekend, or a working week.”

Contemporary and sporty new exterior and interior design details make new Ranger a credible lifestyle choice, while its versatility and ‘tough truck’ underpinnings make it a robust and reliable work partner.

Built in Thailand, the new model will arrive in European Ford showrooms from April and is available in a comprehensive choice of model series, from the entry-level XL to the range-topping Wildtrak.

Bold New Ranger Face and Profile

In design terms, the new front styling gives Ranger a sleeker, more modern look, but also shows it means business.

A large horizontal three-bar grille dominates, and is proudly embossed with RANGER lettering. Two black vertical nostrils either side of the grille plus the extended opening below the bumperline and large headlamps that wrap around each front corner create an instantly recognisable design statement. The lower bumper fascia also includes integrated foglamps.

New Ranger’s tough contemporary style is supported by solid, modern engineering. The sweeping, tapered front is more aerodynamic and sweeps rearward at its edges to incorporate Ranger”s bold front wheel arches. This key design detail communicates Ranger”s solid, confident stance and grippy handling character, whether in 4×2 or 4×4 configuration.

Design features influenced by extensive wind tunnel testing also include the door mirrors. Increased in size for better visibility, the mirror’s shape ““ incorporating the LED turn indicator on Wildtrak ““ was specifically designed to reduce air turbulence and wind noise.

Ranger is available in three body styles ““ Single Cab, RAP (Rear Access Panel) Cab and Double Cab. The RAP Cab is a four-door system to provide freer access to the cabin by featuring two forward-hinged doors and two rear-hinged access panels. An innovation first introduced to Ranger in 2002, the RAP Cab provides unobstructed access to the spacious interior for ease of entry and cargo loading and an uncompromised side-impact safety structure that replaces the centre pillar of a traditional double cab. In addition a Chassis Cab version is available on both the
single Cab and RAP Cab.

Contemporary Details

A new black vent at the trailing edge of the front wings is one of the key styling signatures. The vent features detailed recessed meshwork which surrounds a chrome Ranger badge on Wildtrak models or the side-indicator repeater.

Ranger”s large door mirrors incorporate feature details to reflect the series choice. The mirror is moulded in black on the XL, finished with a body colour cap for Ranger XLT models and a chrome-finished cap for Ranger Limited and Wildtrak. The door mirrors on Wildtrak feature a high-intensity LED integral turn indicator. Mirrors pivot for tight clearance areas and all series now benefit from electrically heated mirrors for improved visibility.

Rear bumper finishes give further opportunity to reflect model series, so treatments progress from black on the XL to chrome on the higher series with Park Distance Control additionally featuring on the Limited and Wildtrak models.

Ranger is offered with ten high quality exterior paint choices, five of which are new: Highland Green, Wining Blue, Lagoon Blue, Copper Red and Desert Bronze.

New Ranger also debuts a clear tail lamp design ““ another contemporary cue ““ that visually unites the smooth tailgate to the sculpted box side. The clear tail lamps further emphasise the reality of car-like styling and features available in Ford’s pick-up range.

Style, Space, Craftsmanship and Comfort

Despite its tough load lugging and off-road capabilities, the new Ranger’s interior offers car-like comfort and low noise levels, thanks to ergonomically crafted seats, climate control and MP3-compatible audio and a bodyshell engineered to isolate road noise from the cabin.

“Minimising NVH (Noise, Vibration and Harshness) in all of our products is a key target for us,” says Nenzen. “Ranger is no exception to this and the new model is more comfortable than ever.”

All Ranger models offer AM/FM radio and an MP3-compatible CD player as standard. The audio unit features a digital display that incorporates a clock function.

The lower centre console features two integral 12-volt power outlets and ““ on all models except the entry level XL ““ an additional AUX input connection for popular audio players, such as an iPod.
Ranger also offers an array of clever stowage solutions, including a centre stack sunglass binnacle, a front door stowage bin capable of accommodating a half-litre bottle and a pull-out sliding tray above the glove compartment.

Extending the width of the passenger side of the dashboard, the slideout tray supports a weight of 10 kilograms and is ideal for use as a work surface for writing or map reading.
Ranger”s large centre console features a two-level design. Its top bin is ideal for accommodating smaller items such as a mobile phone, while its lower bin can house larger objects, including up to 10 CD cases.

Power window and mirror controls are a standard feature in all four Ranger series. The driver”s window has a one-touch down feature and the switch is backlit for better night visibility.
Single cab models feature seating for two, the RAP Cab seats four and the Double Cab seats five. The rear seats in the RAP Cab can be folded up to provide secure storage in the cab rather than using the rear load space.

“The high performance air conditioning system, comprehensive audio features and red illumination of the instrument panel coupled with its bold and updated exterior styling make Ranger a very inviting place to be,” said Henrik Nenzen, “It is also the perfect crossover for business-owners and an increasing number of urban drivers seeking a stylish vehicle that reflects and supports their lifestyle choices.”

Ranger Power and Capability

The new Ford Ranger continues to offer a comprehensive choice of engines, transmissions and drivetrain configurations to meet all customer needs.

Two versions of Ford”s Duratorq TDCi turbo diesel engine lead the powertrain line-up. These responsive common-rail diesel engines are available in either 2.5-litre or 3.0-litre versions.
The diesel engines are available in 4×2 and 4×4 configurations and can be paired with either a five-speed automatic or a five-speed manual transmission.

The 143PS (105kW) 2.5-litre engine is rated at 330Nm and has CO2 emission figures of 227 g/km and 244 g/km respectively in 4×2 and 4×4 configurations and regular cab bodystyle. Using the EC combined fuel consumption cycle the 4×2 regular cab bodystyle travels 100 km using 8.3 litres of fuel and the 4×4 uses 8.9 litres.*

The 156PS (115kW) 3.0-litre version generates 380Nm at the flat peak of its torque curve

“Importantly for all of our customers both TDCi engines produce their maximum torque from just 1,800 rpm,” explains Nenzen. “This makes Ranger ideal for great on-road performance or for hauling and towing with its class leading 3,000kg braked trailer loads.”

The Ranger 4×4 is designed for superior ground clearance and river fording capability. Its approach and departure angles are designed to provide off-road clearance.

Ranger Tough

Ranger isn”t just about tough style. It”s about proven ‘truck toughness’.

Ranger”s toughness starts with a purpose-built truck backbone. Its unique overlapped, cross-braced ladder frame delivers clear strength superiority and the frame is engineered for greater rigidity than H-beam or open-beam configurations.

The frame structure is the foundation of Ranger”s load-carrying capacity, towing capability, durability, handling performance and driving quality.

The Load Ranger

The heart of Ranger”s truck capability is its extra-deep-sidewall pickup box. This design maximises load capacity and cargo flexibility.

The Ranger pick-up box features:

    – Well-placed cargo tiedowns. Easy to access, these tiedown hooks have been designed with Ford”s extensive truck engineering experience
– Slotted inner fenders that allow the easy insertion of available shelving systems for cargo management and loading

Ranger is available in three pick-up box dimensions depending on cab configuration:

    – Single Cab ““ 2280mm by 1456mm
– RAP Cab ““ 1753mm by 1456mm
– Double Cab ““ 1530mm by 1456mm

Ranger also offers class-leading towing capability. Ranger equipped with either the 2.5-litre or 3.0-litre TDCi Duratotq engine is rated at up to 3,000kg.

Yes – this is indeed the 2010 Ford Ranger. Even though the compact pickup remains mostly unchanged from the outside on the inside Ford dropped in new standard safety technology – AdvanceTrac and RSC (Roll Stability Control – that helps the 2010 Ranger from skidding or flipping on rollover conditions. The 2010 Ford Ranger also gets a new combination side airbags as standard.

Power comes from a 2.4L inline 4-cylinder engine that allows an EPA rated fuel-economy of 26 mpg on the highway.

While word on the street is that Ford will eventually kill the Ranger pickup, the addition of new standard safety features hints that Ford will still continue producing the compact pickup.

2010 FORD RANGER: PICKUP ADDS NEW, STANDARD SAFETY TECHNOLOGIES TO UNSURPASSED FUEL ECONOMY

- The 2010 Ford Ranger will add as standard equipment this summer a segment-exclusive safety technology ““ AdvanceTrac® with RSC® (Roll Stability Control) ““ that helps prevent skidding and dangerous rollover conditions

- The new 2010 Ranger also adds new combination side air bags ““ offered standard ““ designed for head and torso protection

- With 2.3-liter I-4 engine, the Ranger offers unsurpassed pickup fuel economy with an EPA-estimated 26 mpg on the highway

- Ford has more U.S. government 5-star safety-rated vehicles than any other brand and more IIHS “Top Safety Picks” than any other automaker

DEARBORN, Feb. 6, 2009 ““ The 2010 Ford Ranger comes to market this summer by adding unique standard safety technologies, including Ford”s AdvanceTrac® with RSC® ““ the world”s most sophisticated electronic stability control system that helps prevent skidding and rollovers ““ and combination side air bags.

Industry-exclusive AdvanceTrac with RSC goes a step beyond stability control systems found on competitive models with a gyroscopic roll sensor that determines both the vehicle”s body roll angle and roll rate.

If it detects the vehicle is about to roll, the system automatically applies additional countermeasures ““ such as reducing engine power 15 percent and/or applying brakes to one or more wheels ““ to enhance vehicle rollover resistance.

The new Ranger”s head-and-chest combination side air bags provide enhanced head and torso protection in certain side impacts. The side air bag system is designed to cushion the head, minimizing lateral head injuries in case of collision, in addition to acting as a barrier between the occupant and the side of the vehicle,

“The 2010 Ranger”s Roll Stability Control and combination side air bag technologies will help occupants stay out of harm”s way,” said Steve Kozak, chief engineer of safety systems, Ford Motor Company. “The Ranger has been America”s most fuel-efficient pickup, and now it features a combination of safety features not offered in any other small pickup.”

In addition, Ranger also provides high levels of safety and security with Ford”s Personal Safety System®, Tire Pressure Monitoring System (TPMS) and SecuriLock® passive anti-theft system, all included as standard equipment on all models.

Also standard are four-wheel anti-lock brakes, driver- and front-passenger air bags, safety belts with front pretensioners for outboard seating positions and side-intrusion door beams. Ford”s front-passenger sensing system helps ensure air bags are not deployed on the passenger side when small children are detected. Lower Anchors and Tethers for Children (LATCH) child-seat mounts are provided in the front-passenger seat on all models.

Further adding value to the Ranger is its class-leading fuel economy and low cost of ownership. With EPA-estimated fuel economy at 21 mpg in the city and 26 mpg on the highway for the 2.3-liter I-4 engine, Ranger offers unsurpassed fuel economy for pickups. Plus its 7,500-mile service intervals for routine maintenance, such as oil changes, help Ranger historically rank among the lowest cost of ownership among all compact pickups studied by Edmunds.com.

Seems like Ford still has money to invest into concepts. The company’s main attraction at the Thailand International Motor Expo 2008 this week is the new Ford Ranger Max concept, a concept that it says hints at design cues that may be seen in the future-generation Ranger.

As you can see from the photos the Ranger Max is all about confidence but keeps its compact Ranger look and feel. The Ford Ranger Max gets the new three-bar grille which is now a Ford hallmark design element, a dominating power-dome, and Ranger branding engraved in the top of the front grille.

The Ford Ranger Max concept was created by team of Ford truck specialists in Thailand who worked closely with Ford’s Australia-based Asia Pacific and Africa design team. When will we see the new Ranger is still a mystery.
