Earlier this year, General Motors officially went back to selling the Chevrolet Camaro after ending production of the sports car in 2002. With a new design, more power and a strong heritage, the Chevrolet Camaro is speeding past the Ford Mustang to become Detroit’s muscle car sales leader.

The new 2010 Chevrolet Camaro outsold the new Ford Mustang by 3,000 units last month, the fifth consecutive month that the Camaro has beaten the Mustang since it went on sale this spring. GM says that the Camaro may even outsell the Mustang altogether this year, which would be the first time the Chevy model has topped its Ford rival since 1985.

Through October, GM has sold 47,233 Camaro units, 9,237 less than the Mustang.

The Camaro “definitely could overtake Mustang as the segment leader by the end of the year,” Susan Docherty, GM’s vice president of U.S. sales said. “We will hopefully do that with only nine months worth of sales versus 12.”

Ford, on the other hand, doesn’t seem too bothered. “I don’t think Mustang sales would have been much different one way or another,” said George Pipas, Ford’s top sales analyst.

FoMoCo has previously said that 90 percent of its line-up will feature its new EcoBoost fuel-saving engines by 2013. Nearly 80 percent of Ford’s global nameplates will have an available EcoBoost option. The Dearborn automakers says that by 2013, global EcoBoost volume throughout the Ford, Lincoln and Mercury vehicle family is expected to be 1.3 million units, with up to 750,000 sales coming from North America alone.

Other than its current 3.5L V6 EcoBoost, Ford has plans to add a 1.6L EcoBoost turbocharged 4-cylinder engine to the Ford Focus, Ford Fiesta and some other models. The companies Grand C-Max will also make it to the U.S. in late 2011 with a 4-cylinder EcoBoost.

But will Ford ever integrate EcoBoost technology into V8 engines? According to sources that spoke with TheDetroitBureau.com, Ford is considering EcoBoost technology for a modified V8, which may find itself powering the next-generation Ford Shelby Mustangs.

“Imagine what we could do with a big V8?” hinted a well-placed company source told the publication. Ford has previously denied rumors of EcoBoost technology for its base 2011 Mustang and Mustang GT sports cars. We’re going to have to file this under rumors for now.

Last year when Ford announced a 50-unit run of the 2008 Ford Mustang Cobra Jet, the program became a huge success and the Dearborn automaker sold out of all the units before the vehicle even went into production. Well, Ford is back this year and is repeating that success with the 2010 Cobra Jet Mustang at the 2009 SEMA show.

For its SEMA launch, Ford racing has unveiled a one-of-a-kind SEMA Special Silver Cobra Jet with charcoal Cobra Jet graphics. Like its predecessor, the 2010 Cobra Jet is intended for NHRA Stock and Super Stock racing. The 2010 model comes with all the features of the 2008 model with some enhancements including a full race-prepared automatic or manual transmission, drag race-specific shocks and springs, manual steering and brakes, 8.50 certified rollcage, and an Aeromitive return-style fuel system with trunk-mounted fuel cell. Another new option is the launch control/rev limiter that lets drivers preset the rpm after they stage the car. When they are ready to go, all they have to do is put the pedal to the floor and enjoy the ride.

Production of the 2010 Cobra Jets will kick off in January at the Auto Alliance International (AAI) assembly plant in Flat Rock, Mich. All 50 units of the car have already been spoken for and deliveries are expected to begin in the first quarter of 2010.

But worry not; since the Cobra Jet is based on the V6 Mustang, any consumer can turn his Mustang into a Cobra Jet by purchasing parts from the Ford Performance Parts catalog.

Press Release:

2010 COBRA JET MUSTANG CONTINUES THE EVOLUTION OF TURNKEY RACE CAR PROGRAM

LAS VEGAS, Nov. 3, 2009 – Since its victorious introduction at the NHRA Winternationals in 1968, Ford’s Cobra Jet Mustang has created a legacy of power, performance and triumph.

The 40th Anniversary 2008 Cobra Jet Mustang lived up to the legend of the original, duplicating the NHRA Winternationals victory in 2009 and dominating drag strips across the land.

Today, Ford Racing unveiled the 2010 Cobra Jet Mustang at the Specialty Equipment Market Association (SEMA) show, which marks the continued evolution of the CJ as a factory-produced turnkey race car. In honor of the SEMA introduction, Ford Racing built and unveiled a one-of-a-kind “SEMA Special” silver Cobra Jet complete with a charcoal Cobra Jet graphics package.

“The 2008 Cobra Jet was a great car, it did everything we wanted it to do,” said Brian Wolfe, director, Ford North American Motorsports. “We’re really proud of the car, but then again we’re always trying to make the next one better.

“With the 2010 Cobra Jet, we had the luxury of a longer development cycle and the result is absolutely stunning. Where the 2008 Cobra Jet was an extremely potent starting point for NHRA Stock competition, the 2010 will enhance the car further. We are all excited to see the new Cobra Jet in competition.”

For decades, the Mustang has been the preeminent car in many forms of racing, including drag racing. The 2008 Cobra Jet Mustang added to that legacy this season with high- profile wins at the NHRA Winternationals and U.S. Nationals, and by setting numerous track records across the country.

The 2010 Cobra Jet, like its predecessor, is a factory-built race car that is intended for NHRA Stock and Super Stock racing. The goal for the 2010 Cobra Jet was to enhance the race features to further make its own place in NHRA history. The 2010 CJ will come with all of the features of the 2008 car with enhancements that include options for a full race-prepared automatic or manual transmission, drag race-specific shocks and springs, manual steering and brakes, 8.50 certified rollcage, and an Aeromitive return-style fuel system with trunk-mounted fuel cell.

Additionally Ford Racing engineers have developed for the 2010 Cobra Jet a factory-first launch control/rev limiter that will allow drivers to preset the rpm after they stage the car. When they are ready to leave, all they do is put the throttle pedal to the floor; they don’t have the engine speed to free rev. Previously, the launch control/rev limiter was only available as an aftermarket option.

Much like Ford Racing’s previous Mustang FR500S race car, the Cobra Jet Mustang will get its start at the Auto Alliance International (AAI) assembly plant in Flat Rock, Mich. The entire 50-car run of 2010 Cobra Jets will be built on the same production line that produces the 2010 Ford Mustang production car. Production of Cobra Jets will commence in January, with delivery of all vehicles expected in the first quarter of 2010.

All of the additional parts and pieces for the CJ can be found in the Ford Performance Parts catalog. And since the Cobra Jet is produced from a base V-6 Mustang, any consumer can turn his Mustang into a Cobra Jet by purchasing the parts from the Ford Performance Parts catalog.

The 2010 CJ car features a choice for customers between two supercharged engines or three normally aspirated engines (pending NHRA approval). These options will allow the Cobra Jet to be eligible for more classes in the NHRA, as well as competition with other sanctioning bodies, including NMRA, NMCA, PSCA and IHRA.

All 50 of the 2010 Cobra Jet Mustangs have already been ordered by Ford dealers for delivery to customers. For those customers who missed out on the limited run of 2010 Cobra Jets, Ford Racing has set a goal to provide future versions of the Cobra Jet.

Roush’s new 427R 2010 Mustang is powered by a 4.3L V8 that has been supercharged to produce 435-hp. Not bad seeing as it allows you to do 0 to 60 mph in the low 4-second range. But what if you feel that isn’t enough horsepower for you to put the all the other pony cars on the road to rest.

Well, Roush today introduced something called the 2010 Roush Stage 3 Mustang, which uses the same engine from the 2009 Roush P-51B Mustang. However, with a couple of modifications, including the next-generation R2300 ROUSHcharger, the engine now produces 540-hp with a peak torque of 510 lb-ft.

Suggested retail price for the 2010 Roush Stage 3 Mustang comes in at $59,945. Roush will produce a limited 103 units of the Stage 3 Mustang so you better hurry if you want one.

However, if you don’t want to pay all that money and don’t really care about 18-inch wheels and a body kit, Roush is also offering the 540RH which it says is “intended to be a ’sleeper’ car.” It gets the same 540-hp along with a new suspension package, front and rear springs, front and rear stabilizer bars and jounce bumpers – all starting at $46,145.

Click through for the press release.

2010 Roush Stage 3 Mustang:

Press Release:

ROUSH® introduces a pair of new 2010 Mustang models, each with 540 horsepower and 510 lb.-ft. of torque ready to be unleashed by the touch of the throttle.

The 2010 ROUSH Stage 3™ Mustang will once again take its rightful place atop the hierarchy of Jack Roush’s lineup. The vehicle comes fully-loaded with the ROUSH body components; resonator exhaust; four-piston front brakes with 14-inch rotors and painted rear calipers with slotted rotors; and the new upper billet grille which removes the fog lamps and streamlines the appearance of the new Mustang while improving cooling performance. Interior enhancements include ROUSH leather seats with an embroidered Jack Roush signature; four-piece performance pedals; ROUSH illuminated sill plates; short throw shifter with black or white ball; and a new interior Stage 3 badge with the car’s serial number engraved.

The 2010 ROUSH Stage 3 Mustang will ride on 18-inch chrome wheels with high-performance Cooper RS3 tires; 20-inch chrome wheels with Cooper RS3 tires are one of the few options available on this model. The suspension package includes ROUSH front struts, rear shocks, front and rear springs, front and rear stabilizer bars and jounce bumpers.

“The ROUSH Stage 3 Mustang has traditionally been among the halo vehicles of our lineup and I’m really proud that it sits atop the pecking order once again,” said Jack Roush. “This new iteration of the Stage 3 represents our highest horsepower and most sophisticated ROUSH Mustang yet, and is sure to resonate among our fans.”

The suggested retail for the 2010 ROUSH Stage 3 Mustang is $59,945*. The 2010 ROUSH Stage 3 Mustang will have a limited production run of only 103 vehicles.

The second Mustang unveiled with the 540 horsepower powerplant is the new 2010 ROUSH 540RH™, a limited content, full powertrain vehicle. Also known as the Hammer®, this car comes armed with massive horsepower, a ROUSH rear decklid spoiler, and short throw shifter with a choice of white or black ball, the 540RH is a stoplight slayer.

Proving just how quick this car can be on the optional 18-inch Cooper RS3 tires, ROUSH engineers recorded an 11.8-second elapsed time at 121 mph during testing at Milan (Mich.) Dragway in early September.

“The new ROUSH 540RH is really intended to be a ’sleeper’ car,” Roush explained. “It will be purposely built with minimal content as it was designed for the buyer who wanted the ROUSH horsepower but with a blank canvas that can be customized into their own personal one-of-a-kind ride.”

The 2010 ROUSH 540RH has a new suspension package which includes front and rear springs, front and rear stabilizer bars and jounce bumpers, and a subtle tone-on-tone striping package. All this comes with a suggested retail starting at $46,145* when built on a base Ford Mustang GT chassis.

Both the 2010 ROUSH Stage 3 Mustang and the 2010 ROUSH 540RH Mustang use the same engine that debuted in the 2009 ROUSH P-51B™ Mustang. In order to get this type of power from the Ford 4.6L, 3-valve engine, ROUSH technicians replace many of the internal components with stronger parts including forged aluminum pistons (with an increased dish to lower the compression ratio from 9.8 to 8.6), forged steel H-Beam connecting rods and a forged steel crankshaft. The fuel rails are changed, as are the fuel injectors and an upgraded fuel pump. ROUSH also upgrades the clutch and includes a custom-calibration for the ECM to manage the performance of the next-generation R2300 ROUSHcharger®.

As is standard with all new ROUSH Mustangs, both cars will come with the anti-wheel hop kit installed during the assembly process. This part (No. 401788) is an outstanding addition to any 2005-2010 Ford Mustang GT.

Both vehicles are covered by a 3-year/36,000-mile warranty and will be available with a manual transmission only. The 2010 ROUSH Stage 3 is expected to start production by the end of September; the 2010 ROUSH 540RH should start showing up on dealer lots in October. For more information on either of these new models, or to see the complete content list, visit www.ROUSHperformance.com.

But today, someone by the name TheInsider on The Mustang Source.com reveals some 2011 Mustang specs.

If the source is to be believed the base Mustang will carry a 3.7L V6 making 315-hp – the same as the current 2010 Mustang GT. There are no plans for an EcoBoost V6 Mustang since the highest rated EcoBoost pumps out 365-hp – Ford is hoping to have the next 5.0L V8 powered Mustang GT hit 400-hp.

Other than that we can expect the 2011 Mustang GT to get a 6-speed transmission, VVT and a Track Pack that includes Brembo brakes. The 2011 Shelby GT500 will get an Aluminum Block. The forum also said that the next special-edition Mustang will be the 2012 Boss.

For its October issue, Consumer Reports tested six sports cars and coupes to figure out which is the best overall. The test included a Hyundai Genesis Coupe, a Nissan 370Z, a Subaru WRX and Detroit’s Big 3 muscle cars – the 2010 Ford Mustang, the 2010 Chevrolet Camaro and the 2009 Dodge Challenger.

After running all six through their tests, Consumer Reports picked the 2010 Mustang with an over all rating of Very Good and a road test score of 78. The Mustang beat its other two Detroit rivals – the 2010 Camaro and the 2009 Challenger, which received an overall score of 71 and 53 respectively.

“The Mustang topped this group by delivering strong acceleration, communicative steering, and the most agile handling,” said David Champion, senior director of CR’s Auto Test Center in East Haddam, Connecticut.

Press Release:

Ford Mustang Outpoints Chevrolet Camaro and Dodge Challenger in Consumer Reports Tests of Sports Cars and Coupes

Hyundai Genesis Coupe, Nissan 370Z, and redesigned Subaru WRX get Very Good road test scores

YONKERS, N.Y., Aug. 31 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ — The freshened Ford Mustang outpointed two other reincarnated muscle cars — the Chevrolet Camaro and the Dodge Challenger — as well as the new Hyundai Genesis Coupe in Consumer Reports’ tests of six sporty cars and coupes in the October issue.

The Mustang received a Very Good overall road test score of 78, outpointing the Camaro which received a Very Good 71, and the Challenger, which received a Good 53 points. CR’s engineers found the Mustang’s 2010 freshening makes it an even more balanced and satisfying driver’s car than ever before.

The new Camaro shares basic underpinnings with the Pontiac G8 sedan. The Challenger is based on the large Chrysler 300 and Dodge Charger rear-wheel-drive sedans. The Hyundai Genesis Coupe received a Very Good test score and is distinct from the rest of the group. It is loosely based on the Genesis luxury sedan and is powered by either a turbocharged four-cylinder or V6 engine, in contrast to the muscle cars’ V8s.

CR also tested the redesigned Nissan 370Z two-seat coupe, an agile sports car which received a Very Good test score, and the updated and improved 2009 Subaru Impreza WRX, which also received a Very Good test score.

Prices ranged from $38,565 for the 370Z to $26,088 for the WRX. The Mustang has average reliability and is Recommended, as is the WRX. The other models are too new to have reliability data for CR to Recommend them. CR only Recommends vehicles that have performed well in its tests, have at least average predicted reliability based on CR’s Annual Car Reliability Survey of its more than seven million print and web subscribers, and performed at least adequately if crash-tested or included in a government rollover test.

Full tests and ratings of the sporty cars test group appear in the October issue of Consumer Reports, which goes on sale September 1. The reports are also available to subscribers of www.ConsumerReports.org . Updated daily, ConsumerReports.org is the go-to site for the latest auto reviews, product news, blogs on breaking news and car buying information.

In everyday driving, the Mustang corners with agility and the highway ride is civilized. The Ford Mustang GT premium, ($34,725 Manufacturer’s Suggested Retail Price as tested) is powered by a 315-hp, 4.6-liter V8 engine that delivers strong acceleration and gets 20 mpg overall in CR’s own fuel economy tests. The engine has a deep burble that is pleasing to listen to. The five-speed manual transmission shifts smoothly and accurately. Braking is Very Good. The 2010 freshening brought upgraded interior materials and better fit and finish.

The Camaro provides blistering performance and handles capably, but its girth undermines its agility. The Chevrolet Camaro 2SS ($35,425, MSRP as tested), is powered by a 426-hp, 6.2-liter, V8 engine that delivers very strong performance and 18 mpg overall. The engine sounds great when the throttle is punched. The six-speed manual transmission has a good feel. Braking is excellent. The interior is nicely finished despite gaps around the instrument panel and some cheap plastics.

With exhilarating straight-line acceleration, a brawny V8, and stock-car styling, the Challenger recaptures the character of the American muscle car. The Dodge Challenger R/T ($36,600, MSRP as tested), is powered by a 370-hp, 5.7-liter “Hemi” V8 engine that delivers strong performance and 18 mpg overall. The optional six-speed manual transmission shifts well with a pistol-like grip that fits snugly in hand. Whatever wind and road noise there is, and it’s not much, is overwhelmed by the invigorating engine growl. Braking is mediocre and it has a big car feel rather than a sports car. The well-assembled interior has a nicely padded dash and nostalgic horizontal seat stitching.

The Genesis Coupe has agile handling that makes make it fun to drive, which is unusual for a Hyundai. The Hyundai Genesis Coupe 3.8 Grand Touring ($28,375, MSRP as tested), is powered by a 306-hp, 3.8-liter V6 engine and gets an impressive 23 mpg overall. The V6 engine smoothly hums under acceleration. However, the interaction of the six-speed manual transmission’s shifter and heavy clutch make it a challenge to get smooth shifts. Braking is very good. The interior is nicely finished, although it’s not luxurious like the Genesis sedan’s.

The WRX’s ride is taut, yet controlled and the car is steady yet compliant on the highway. The Subaru WRX ($26,088, MSRP as tested), is powered by a 265-hp, 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine that delivers very strong acceleration and gets 24 mpg overall. It’s well matched to a five-speed manual transmission. In everyday driving, the WRX engine has the manners of a typical four-cylinder with mileage to match. Braking is excellent. Interior plastics are all hard, but the interior is well-assembled.

Redesigned for 2009, the two-seat 370Z is shorter and better finished than its predecessor, the 350Z. Great handling and braking are high points of the 370Z, as is abundant power. The cabin is cramped and noisy, it’s hard to see out, and the stiff ride is wearing over time. The Nissan 370Z Touring ($38,565, MSRP as tested), is a real sports car with quick handling and lots of grip. It is powered by a 332-hp, 3.7-liter V6 engine that gets 23 mpg overall, but on premium fuel. The six-speed manual transmission’s short-throw shifter has a good feel. Braking is excellent. The interior has exceptional fit and finish.

However, this dream, fantasy, drag race grudge match, or whatever you want to call it, is by far the most interesting of them all.

Meet Derek Murrell of Lake Mary, Florida. Ford gave him the chance to challenge his high-school shop teacher Bill Rosenblum in a 2010 Ford Mustang GT drag race. Rosenblum, a big influence on Derek and his passion for cars, is a local racer in central Florida. After hearing Rosenblum talk up his racing skills in class, it became Derek’s goal to face-off against his teacher and mentor. The winner of the race got a brand new 2010 Ford Mustang GT. Find out who wins after the jump.

The 2010 Chevrolet Camaro outsold the 2010 Ford Mustang two months in a row – and that may be do to the fact that the Camaro offers more power for the price you pay. The base V6 2010 Mustang produces 210-hp while the base 2010 Camaro makes 306-hp. On the other hand, the V8 Mustang GT makes 315-hp while the V8 Camaro SS makes 426-hp.

Well, Ford isn’t wasting anytime and is already working on upgrades for the 2011 Ford Mustang, prototypes of which were recently spotted at the GingerMan Raceway in South Haven, Michigan.

According to CARandDRIVER, the prototypes were wearing Pirelli P Zero Corsa r-compound tires, which most likely means that the 2011 Mustang GT will come with an upgraded Track Pack.

It was recently reported that the 2011 Ford Mustang will get a high-revving 3.7L V6 that should produce 273-hp. Other rumors state that Ford may throw in its 3.5L V6 EcoBoost making 340-hp. The 2011 Mustang GT is expected to carry the new Coyote 5.0L V8 that is currently being tested in the United States.
Press Release:

QUEEN LATIFAH TAMES HER NEW 2010 FORD MUSTANG WITH HELP FROM PRO DRIVER COLIN BRAUN

DEARBORN, Mich., Aug. 5, 2009 – The Queen made a wish and Ford Motor Company delivered. Twenty-year-old NASCAR phenom Colin Braun brought award-winning musician and actress Queen Latifah a 2010 Ford Mustang and schooled her in how to drive the iconic muscle car like a pro. Latifah, already a proud owner of a ‘65 Mustang, wished to drive the car in the extended music video for her new song “Fast Cars.”

“There are certain cars throughout history that have their own identity. They become synonymous with feeling and energy, an event in your life,” says Latifah. “A Mustang is a Mustang; the car is timeless.”

Latifah received her pro driving lesson and 2010 Mustang by participating in “The ‘10 Unleashed” promotion, which asks people to describe their ultimate Mustang dream experience in 250 words or less. A video diary chronicling her exhilarating lesson from Braun will be featured starting today at www.the2010mustang.com.

“Queen Latifah is a fabulous actress and musician, but more importantly she stays true to herself,” says Ford Mustang Communications Manager Patricia Piedrahita. “That’s what the Mustang is all about – style, power and individuality. When Queen Latifah told us she owned a classic Mustang and wanted a new one for her ‘Fast Cars’ video, we saw the perfect fit.”

On June 24, 2009, Latifah took a detour from promoting her new album to head to New Jersey Motorsports Park, where Colin Braun and the 2010 Mustang were waiting for her. “Are you ready,” Braun asked. Latifah held on tight while Braun white-knuckled her through a few hot laps. Latifah then proclaimed, “It’s time to conquer this track,” donned her own helmet and went out to experience the raw power and handling of the new 2010 Ford Mustang.

“I’ve been a little jealous of people riding around town with their Mustangs,” Latifah said. “Now I got one. No more jealousy. They can eat my dust.”

Latifah’s dream-come-true is brought to life through the video chapters available at www.the2010mustang.com.

The Ford Mustang was originally named so because John Najjar, an executive stylist with Ford during the 1960’s had suggested it, due to his affinity for the WWII fighter plane, the P-51 Mustang. At that time, Najjar hardly knew that the ‘Mustang’ name would one day come to embody the epitome of American muscle. As of late, the retro styled Dodge Challenger and Chevrolet Camaro have been all the rage of the muscle-car market, but both owe their very existence today to the Mustang, as it was that car that gave rise to the entire segment.

Unlike the Camaro and the Challenger, which saw pauses and breaks in production, the Mustang is the only muscle car that has consistently been in production since its inception. And now, the release of the 2010 Mustang marked the model’s 45th Anniversary.

At first glance, the ‘10 Mustang does not look markedly different from its predecessors, but upon closer inspection, one will notice a much leaner, meaner, and more muscular stance than previous models, making for more refined look inside the vehicle and out. FoMoCo was generous enough to let the staff at egmCarTech test a 2010 Mustang GT Convertible for a week; our review is focused accordingly.

Note: The base 2010 Mustang carries the same 210-hp 4.0L V6 engine as last year’s model.

Exterior:

Despite exterior styling that indicates a slight fear of pushing the envelope of last year’s model, Ford says that the exterior sheet metal is all new, save for the fast-back roofline. The front end brings much muscular appeal to the car with its redesigned fascia, grille, headlamps, fenders, and power dome hood. That appeal is enhanced with new front-rear fenders and sculptured wheel flares. Though not as extensive as the front end, the rear end saw some slight changes in design with its angled rear corners, sculpted deck lid, and most notably, the retro styled sequential turn signal taillights. An optional, spoiler embedded rear-view camera is also available. The wheel-and-tire combinations on the 2010 family of Mustangs also measure 1″ larger than previous years, as they range between 17″ and 19″.

Of course, let’s not forget the more refined and sharp looking pony badge that graces the front grille.

Interior:

The interior design shows the same subtle degree of change as the exterior. Fortunately though, Ford took some time to improve the quality of the interior. The squeaking and creaking noises that were a result of the poorly built, multi-piece, hard plastic interior, are a thing of the past due to the much sleeker designed one-piece, aluminum finish trimmed instrument panel.

The center instrument panel now features refined controls for the dual-climate control system, stereo controls, heated seats and other options. The same ergonomic placement of the controls are carried over to the steering-wheel and the display between the odometer allowing you to control most of the frequently used options without taking your hands off the wheel and eyes off the road.

Seating on the 2010 Ford Mustang GT is quite comfortable. The bucket seats keep your body from swinging side-to-side when you take sharp turns while providing relaxed support during performance-driving. Speaking of performance-driving, muscle-car fans will love the engine sound that is tossed into the interior when you step on the gas-pedal. For those that like to carry a nice conversation with the passenger or their significant other via Bluetooth connectivity, you might find the 2010 Mustang GT’s roar a little inconvenient.

Excited by bells and whistles? The ‘10 Mustang is sure to please, with its flawless Microsoft Sync option, and MyColor feature; which gives the driver 125 colors (which we feel is excessive) from which to choose to set the mood of the interior lighting. The aforementioned rear-view camera option was our personal favorite, with its disappearing screen seamlessly embedded into the rear-view mirror.

Performance:

As mentioned above, the base model is offered with the same 210-hp 4.0L V6 engine from last year. Even the GT carries the same 4.6L V8 from last year; however, the power has been increased to 315-hp with a maximum 325 lb-ft of torque, reminiscent of the 2008 Mustang Bullitt. That extra power is achieved by the addition of a cold-air induction system pioneered through Ford Racing Technology. The redline on the V8 has also been moved to 6.500 rpm, a 250 rpm increase from last year, allowing a little more room for excitement. Last years transmission options remain untouched, allowing for a choice between a 5-speed manual and 5-speed automatic.

The 2010 Mustang provides for a much tighter and more solid ride than any previous Mustang, mainly due to Reverse-L independent MacPherson struts, and 34-mm tubular stabilizer bar on the front end, a 3-link solid axle with coil springs, Panhard rod, and a 20-mm solid stabilizer bar on the rear end. Handling has also been significantly improved due to the rack and pinion with power assist.

We were a bit disappointed however, by the car’s soft braking. On the GT, braking power comes courtesy of 4-wheel power disc brakes with 4-sensor, 4-channel anti-lock braking system (ABS). Though an improvement over the ‘09, we were definitely looking for a much quicker and stronger response when traveling at high-speeds – perhaps in 2011.

Nonetheless, pounce on the gas-pedal and you’ll see your 2010 Mustang GT snort and roar as you scare those looking at you in their rear-view mirror. 0 to 60 comes in 5 seconds, almost a tenth quicker than the previous-generation GT. We’ve heard that the 210-hp V6 Mustang takes about 6.5 seconds to reach 60.

Fuel-economy for the 2010 Mustang GT is rated at 17/23 mpg (city/highway) when mated to a 5-speed automatic and 16/24 mpg when mated to a 5-speed manual. However, Ford recommends using 87 octane for the 4.6L V8 in the owner’s manual so you should be able to save some cash at the pump.

Overall:

So how much does it cost? Go for the V6 210-hp base-model and you can still say that the Mustang is an affordable muscle car with prices starting at $20,995 for the coupe, and $25,995 for the convertible. Go for the GT and get ready to cash out $28,000 for the coupe and $33,000 for the convertible. Our fully loaded (without navigation) 2010 Mustang GT Premium convertible was priced just under $40,000.

The Camaro and Challenger are indeed outstanding looking cars, but the Mustang offers three things that its competitors do not:

1.	The Camaro convertible is not expected to debut until 2011, while a Challenger convertible is as of yet unconfirmed by Chrysler.

2.	The Camaro Z28 is also not expected to hit until 2011, and the 2010 Shelby GT 500’s 540-hp puts the Challenger SRT8’s 425-hp to shame.

3.	Ford is the only American automaker that has yet to seek government assistance, and is far from doing so. When we hear rumors of the 315-hp V8 in the GT being replaced by a new 420-hp Coyote 5.0L V8 in 2011, we can put some stock in them.

The 2010 Ford Mustang is more refined and has more muscle than its predecessors, and as the most affordable American muscle-car, it remains the most iconic.
