We’re pretty satisfied with the new Ford Focus and the 247-hp Focus ST that will debut next year. However, our enthusiast heart still yearns for a new version of the RS500.

Powered by a 2.5 liter inline 5-cylinder turbo engine, the Ford Focus RS500 makes a whopping 350-hp and all that power is transferred to the wheels through a 6-speed manual gearbox. Ford only produced a limited 500 units of the model and kept 12 for itself.

As Ford has been going global with the latest Focus, we used to be jealous of how much better the European Focuses were compared to our North American version. And it still is that way…somewhat.

Rumor has it that Ford is considering an RS version of the latest generation global Ford Focus. This hint comes from Gunnar Herrmann, Ford’s global boss for small cars during a small press conference this pas week.

While the outgoing Focus RS had a lot of tire-smoking power going to the front wheels, the new Focus RS will have more power and still have the power going to the front wheels. With the last model already punching almost more than 300 horses, it’s hard to imagine how much more they can push at the wrong wheels without having handling issues. However, with their special MacPherson-based suspension called the RevoKnuckle, the boffins at Ford have somehow made it work on the MkII RS.

“I think we stay with our two-wheel-drive strategy [for the new RS], which I think was well executed [for the previous version],” said Herrmann.

Speaking also of the RevoKnuckle the same sort of technology will be carried right over to the new Focus RS, which is expected to launch sometime in 2013 or 2014.

One change that could be made though with this new Focus RS is the smaller engine. Herrmann admitted himself that the 2.5L Volvo-sourced turbocharged five banger was a great engine, but due to the trend to reduce fuel consumption by using small forced induced engines, the engineers at Ford are heavily toying with getting more power out of the 2.0L turbocharged four-banger in the lower ST.

Ford however still has plenty of time to perfect the new Focus RS. And as I was saying in the intro, there’s no word of its launch here on North American soil. So it may be the same case as it was before, leaving us drooling over the better versions of cars that everyone else gets to enjoy but US. Let’s hope that will change as we get closer to the launch date.

So you’re pretty upset that all of the 500 limited-edition 345-hp Ford Focus RS500 have been spoken for – well, BBR is here to cheer you up with new performance conversions for the base Ford Focus RS. BBR says that its four stage performance upgrade for the Focus RS took 18 months to perfect and says that it is pretty confident that “no other Ford tuning company worldwide has a more complete track, road and dyno tested range of conversions for the Focus RS.”

Phase one consists of a custom mapped BBR Star Chip with calibration of the Focus RS’s ECU, fuel, ignition, torque, airflow and boost requirements. The result is an output of 342-hp and a peak torque of 369 lb-ft. Phase two replaces the standard intercooler on the Focus RS with BBR’s own high flow unit. Building on top of the phase one customizations, output is increased to 355-hp and 378 lb-ft of torque. In phase three of the upgrade, BBR adds to phase one and phase two with a BBR spec turbo back high flow exhaust with a sports catalyst, stainless steel finished with Twin 4″ tail pipes, BBR spec high flow fuel injectors, BBR Star Chip software calibration and BBR injectors. That allows for a total of 382-hp and 388 lb-ft of torque.

Phase four is where things get the most exciting. In addition to all the phase three upgrades, phase four adds a BBR high flow fuel pump and a BBR hybrid turbo charger. That yields in a total output of 404-hp with a maximum torque of 408 lb-ft.

BBR is also offering suspension upgrades, a performance spring set and Koni adjustable dampers to go along with the package.

Press Release:

LEGENDARY TUNER BBR RELEASES PERFORMANCE CONVERSION PORTFOLIO FOR FORD FOCUS RS MK2

Brackley, Northants, 9th August 2010

BBR is proud to announce a new range of performance conversions for the mighty 300 bhp Ford Focus RS MK2. BBR’s upgrades reflect its 20 years experience with Ford tuning and are available in four very distinct power levels, with an accompanying suspension upgrade package to optimise the car’s dynamic abilities.

After 18 months of meticulous testing and development, BBR is confident no other Ford tuning company worldwide has a more complete track, road and dyno tested range of conversions for the Focus RS MK2.

Phase One BBR StarChip Software upgrade

The entry level upgrade transforms the performance and driveability of the Focus RS via an ECU remap. Use of BBR’s StarChip software affords an extremely linear throttle pedal / turbo boost map, resulting in a considerably smoother driving experience than offered by the factory ECU settings. With a huge improvement in throttle response, the mid range torque and peak horsepower are substantially enhanced, with no visibly obvious mechanical changes.

Phase One Conversion includes:

Custom Mapped BBR Star Chip – With careful calibration of the standard Focus RS MK2 ECU, fuel, ignition, torque, airflow and boost requirements are carefully re-mapped for all conditions, making this conversion a worthy level one addition to our range. BBR is confident that this ECU remap represents the finest blend of drivable performance for track and road.

Silicone induction hose – During testing under full load BBR has found the original air intake hose distorting, causing an airflow restriction. Replacement of this hose is essential to release the full performance of the Phase One conversion.

BBR Focus RS Phase One Power 342 HP @ 6150RPM
BBR Focus RS Phase One Torque 369 ft/lbs @ 3350RPM

Priced at £595.00, customers should allow 2 hours for installation. A DIY kit is also available.

Phase Two BBR RS355

BBR’s Phase Two upgrade replaces the RS MK2′s standard inefficient intercooler with BBR’s own high flow unit. All inlet air box hoses to and from the air-box and to the RS’s turbocharger unit are replaced with high flow, silicon versions, removing inlet air flow restrictions in the process.

In conjunction with the replacement inlet hose kit, BBR installs a custom mapped BBR Star Chip to extract the maximum safe power from the original RS MK2′s fuel system, without any gains in inlet temperature, or the very important ‘air fuel ratio’ going weak. The stock paper element air filter is also replaced with a high flow performance unit.

In addition to the Phase One upgrade, the Phase Two Conversion includes:

BBR spec High flow intercooler – Finished in gloss black, the BBR intercooler sits discretely behind the Focus RS MK2′s aggressive front grill, utilizing the full width of the aperture. This highly efficient inlet core allows BBR to manage inlet air temperatures easily, helping to optimise performance at higher boost levels.

High Flow inlet hose set – A complete set of high flow replacement hoses are included, removing manufacturer’s inherent flow restrictions and allowing greater flow from the turbocharger.

High flow filter – BBR specifies a drop in performance air filter which improves throttle response and comes with a million mile warranty.

BBR Focus RS Phase Two Power 355 HP @ 6580RPM
BBR Focus RS Phase Two Torque 378 ft/lbs @ 3000-4600RPM

Priced at £1245.00, with a fitting charge of £195.00, customers should allow four to five hours for installation. A DIY kit is also available.

Phase Three BBR RS380

The BBR Phase Three conversion extracts the maximum safe power from the original Focus RS MK2′s turbo unit. In addition to components used in the BBR phase two upgrade, the complete exhaust system is replaced with a BBR 3″ stainless steel exhaust that includes a sports catalyst (retaining emissions legality.)

As part of the Phase Three conversion BBR also modifies the Focus RS MK2′s fuel system to cope with the higher demands required at this boost/power level, using larger fuel injectors. BBR’s Star Chip ECU software is then carefully calibrated in parallel with the larger fuel injectors to ensure no loss in drivability or fuel consumption penalty.

In addition to the Phase Two upgrade, the Phase Three Conversion includes:

A BBR spec Turbo back high flow exhaust with sports cat – a complete system including sports catalyst, highest quality aircraft grade stainless steel finished with Twin 4″ tail pipes that sit perfectly within the Focus RS MK2′s original bumper aperture.

BBR spec high flow fuel injectors – Drop in replacement fuel injectors, with careful BBR Star Chip software calibration, BBR injectors are optimised for this power level.

BBR Focus RS Phase Three Power 382 HP @ 6080RPM
BBR Focus RS Phase Three Torque 388 ft/lbs @ 3000-4650RPM

Priced at £2495.00, with a fitting charge £345.00, customers should allow six to eight hours for installation. A DIY kit is also available.

Phase Four BBR RS400

The highest level of BBR Focus RS Mk2 conversion is for those customers looking for a genuine 400bhp upgrade. As part of the BBR Phase Four upgrade, the RS original turbocharger is replaced with our higher flow motorsport spec item and further modifications are made to the fuel system. This conversion delivers true supercar performance from the Ford Focus RS Mk2.

In addition to Phase Three upgrade, the Phase Four Conversion includes:

BBR specification high flow fuel pump – The BBR high flow fuel pump directly replaces the stock item, as the fuel flow required at this level surpasses that available from the OEM Ford unit.

BBR Hybrid turbo charger – This is a fully overhauled unit, with extensive modifications including; All bearings and seals replaced, a CNC re-profiled compressor cover, a billet motorsport 360° thrust bearing and thrust washers, a billet larger diameter inlet compressor wheel, cutback turbine wheel, central core rotational housing balanced to motorsport spec, ported and flowed compressor cover, turbine housing and wastegate valve.

BBR Focus RS Phase Four Power 404 HP @ 6220RPM
BBR Focus RS Phase Four Torque 408 ft/lbs @ 3380RPM

Priced at £3895.00, with a fitting charge of £595.00, customers should allow a full day for installation. A DIY kit is also available.

* All MK2 Focus RS conversion levels for DIY fitment require the ECU to be sent to BBR to allow for software installation.

BBR Focus RS suspension upgrades

BBR has been busy developing its own high performance springs, and along with well known suspension specialists Koni, its own BBR/Koni adjustable dampers. BBR has discovered that the standard Focus RS suspension is extremely harsh and uncomfortable for every day. Fed up with RS hash ride of the original set up, BBR has produced a highly effective suspension solution.

BBR Focus RS Performance Spring set

BBR’s very own track and road developed performance springs are designed to work with the car’s existing standard dampers, or our own adjustable dampers for a more comfortable ride, whilst gently lowering the Focus RS’s ride height.

DIY Price £195.00, fitting charge £300.00, including a full geometry setup.

BBR Spec Focus RS Koni adjustable dampers

BBR has found that many of its Focus ST clients have reported the rough and bumpy ride on the STD RS is far from enjoyable on longer journeys.

BBR’s solution is a set of adjustable BBR spec Koni dampers which are compatible with either the standard Ford springs or BBR’s own performance spring set.

DIY Price £795.00, fitting charge £300.00, including full geometry setup.

It was reported yesterday that FoMoCo is scheduled to show the next-generation Ford Focus ST at the 2010 Paris Motor Show in October. However, many Focus enthusiasts are wondering what the automaker has in store for the next-generation Focus RS.

Click here for more news on the Ford Focus.

Derrick Kuzak, Ford’s head of global development, confirmed at the 2010 Geneva Motor Show that the company is working on a “global performance version” of the all-new 2012 Focus. That version will most likely get the 2.0L 4-cylinder turbo EcoBoost making some 250-hp.

Sources say that the next RS version of the Focus could be powered by a turbocharged gasoline engine mated to a torquey electric-motor mounted to the rear-axle. Insiders say that Ford’s Team RS engineers have already started messing around with the 2.0L EcoBoost engine and plan on using an electric-motor for more power. Working together, they system is expected to produce somewhere north of 300-hp.

The 2012 Ford Focus is scheduled to hit markets in early 2011.

Refresher: Power for the 2012 Ford Focus comes from a 2.0L DI Ti-VCT engine making 155-hp and a peak torque of 145 lb-ft. It is mated to a 6-speed manual or Ford”s latest dry-clutch 6-speed Ford PowerShift automatic transmission. Sales of the 2012 Focus will begin in early 2011.

Press Release:

FORD FOCUS RS LE MANS CLASSIC: A COLLECTION OF 5 UNIQUE EXAMPLES CREATED TO PAY TRIBUTE TO LEGENDARY FORD LE MANS RACERS

Saint-Germain-en-Laye, 21 June 2010 – Ecurie Ford France, one of the partners of the popular
Le Mans Classic event which takes place between July 9th and 11th, has prepared a collection of just five Focus RS cars in unique colour schemes, each paying tribute to the Ford cars which made
‘blue oval’ history at the Le Mans 24 Hours.

Each of the five Focus RS Le Mans Classic vehicles will be finished in the colours of one of the Ford cars which made 24 Hours history for Ford. During the event itself, they will even carry the race number of the cars to which they’re paying tribute:

* Black with silver stripes: a reference to the Ford Mk II, which was victorious in 1966.
* Red with white stripes: recalling the Mk IV which won in 1967.
* White with a thin blue centre stripe surrounded by a red border: echoing the decoration of the beautiful Ford Mk IIB, entered by Ford France in the 1967 Le Mans 24-hours.
* Two-tone sky blue and orange: A modern take on the GT40s which dominated Le Mans in 1968 and 1969.
* Two-tone white and blue: representing the livery of the Capri RS 2600 which took the Touring category in 1972.

All five exclusive Focus RS vehicles also have customised interiors. The Recaro seats are upholstered in leather and diamond-quilted alcantara, front and back, with stitching that matches the bodywork. The gearshift gaiter, hand brake handle and central arm-rest are upholstered in real leather, and a leather safety belt guide has been added to the front seats.

Each of the five cars will carry a personalised numbered plaque on the dashboard confirming its exclusivity as part of the collection.

The five cars will be seen in action at the 2010 Le Mans Classic in July, and will be driven on a number of laps of the full track at the start of a number of the different ‘grid’ races reserved for cars of a particular era, with Ford-invited special guests and VIPs at the wheel.

The Focus RS Le Mans Classic units will be joined on the track by the limited edition Ford Focus RS500, whose futuristic matt black livery will be an equally eye-catching addition to the palette of colours which have fired the imaginations of countless fans of Ford and the greatest endurance race in the world.

Only Five For Sale

Once the fifth Le Mans Classic event is over, these five unique Focus RS Le Mans Classic vehicles will be put up for sale, and will be offered with exclusive accessories. Fitted with either RS(1) or RS Technology(2) packs, they will be supplied with a Le Mans Classic watch – a 3-dial automatic chronograph with large date display and sapphire background of which only 600 are to be produced.

The 5 cars to which the Ford Focus RS Le Mans Classic is paying tribute:

The Ford Mk II (victorious in 1966): on the 18th of June 1966, Henry Ford II himself gave the starting signal for the 24th Le Mans 24 Hours. He let loose a pack of fifty-five vehicles led out by two of the eight Mk IIs entered by the manufacturer plus six GT40s, including one belonging to Ford France which was driven by Guy Ligier and the American Bob Grossman. The duel with Ferrari was at its peak for this “race of the century”. Unbeaten since 1960, the Italian marque was the queen of Le Mans. However, this time it was the Americans who dominated, pulling off a spectacular triple! For the first time ever, the 200km/h average speed barrier was broken at
Le Mans.

The Ford Mk IV (winner in 1967): Wanting revenge, Ferrari sent its formidable 330 P4s to challenge the Mk IVs in a face-to-face battle without mercy. However, it was all in vain. The unstoppable red, white-trimmed Mk IV, piloted by Dan Gurney and A.J. Foyt, wiped the floor with Lodovico Scarfiotti and Mike Parkes’ P4. Unforgettable new pages in the history of motor sport were being written before everyone’s eyes. The epic tale of the Mk IIs and Mk IVs concluded with the spectacular distance (5,232.9 km) and average speed (218 km/h!) records set by Ford that year.

The Ford GT40 (victorious in 1968 and 1969): Even though Ford as a manufacturer was not directly involved, John Wyer’s JWA team benefitted from Gulf Oil sponsorship and the blessing of Ford Dearborn. For their first outing in 1968, the GT40s faced some keen and challenging competition from Porsche and Alfa Romeo. Driven by Pedro Rodriguez and Lucien Bianchi, the GT40 clearly dominated the field ahead of a Porsche 907 and three Alfa Romeo 33/2s. This third consecutive Ford victory was the first for a genuine GT40.

In 1969, competition was as intense and varied as ever: Porsche was in attendance with its 908s and its new 917s, Matra introduced its 630/650s and Ferrari was back again with its 312 Ps. Nevertheless, once again the GT40 beat them all, sweeping the boards at the end of an epic duel. Jacky Ickx raced across the finish line leaving the German Hans Hermann 120 metres behind and red faced at the wheel of his Porsche. The GT40 drove away with Ford’s fourth consecutive victory at Le Mans!

Capri RS 2600 (1st in the Special Touring category in 1972): Tenth overall, the Capri RS 2600, driven by Gerry Birrel and Claude Bourgoignie, dominated its category during the 1972 Le Mans 24 Hours. Manufactured between 1969 and 1986, the Ford Capri enjoyed a great sporting career and was one of the great leaders of the European Touring Car Championships and the 24 Hours of Spa-Francorchamps. It also shone in the Production Cars Championship of France and the famous British Touring Car Championship. Many Formula 1 drivers distinguished themselves at the wheel of a Capri, including Jochen Mass, Hans Stuck and the Tyrrell Racing duo of Jackie Stewart and François Cevert during the 6 Hours of Paul Ricard Circuit organised in 1972. The rally version of the Capri also appeared in the colours of Ecurie Ford France with internationally renowned drivers such as Jean-François Piot, Guy Chasseuil, Jean Vinatier and Jean-Claude Gamet at the wheel.

Ford Mk II Ecurie Ford France (1967): Jo Schlesser teamed up with his friend Guy Ligier on only one occasion at Le Mans. That was in 1967, in a magnificent white Ford Mk II powered by a seven litre V8 engine. An early track exit crushed their hopes in the 13th hour. However, driving the same car, they won the last ever 12 Hours of Reims, the other former great French endurance race. Jo Schlesser, a driver with an incredibly eclectic talent, was killed during the 1968 French Grand Prix. He was one of Ecurie Ford France’s most emblematic drivers, racing on track circuits, in rallies and in a famous hill climbing race of the time, the Mont-Ventoux.

Ford may have sold out of the limited-edition Focus RS500, but it still has a couple of ‘base’ Focus RS units left in its allocation for the UK market. As the last UK-bound examples of its Focus RS hot-hatch to reach British dealers, Ford is offering a special white WRC-style wheel option to mark the end of production.

“The demand for Focus RS has been astounding,” said David Calder Ford of Britain Product Manager. “In barely a year since launch, we have sold almost our entire UK allocation ““ thanks in a large part to this Focus RS continuing the proud tradition of combining high-performance with practicality and affordability. We expect demand to be high for these last cars and we’re giving customers the chance to personalise them with this exclusive option.”

The 19-inch, white-finished alloy wheels will be available at £500 per set ($740 USD).

Refresher: Power for the 2009 Ford Focus RS comes from a 2.5L 5-cylinder Duratec engine with a large Borg Warner K16 turbocharger. That makes a total of 300-hp and a peak torque of 324 lb-ft. 0-62 mph comes in about 5.9 seconds with a top speed of 163 mph.

So you own a Ford Focus RS and are pretty upset that Ford just released a hotter version of the RS with the new 345-hp Focus RS500. Worry not – Ford has just announced a new Ford-approved performance upgrade MP350 package that boosts the output of the standard Focus RS to 345-hp with a maximum torque of 339 lb-ft – the same as the RS500.

“Ford’s relationship with Mountune has produced a series of dynamic performance upgrade packages for Ford models like the Focus ST and new Fiesta, and we are confident that the Focus RS package will prove equally successful,” says Matthias Tonn, Focus RS500 Chief Programme Engineer. “While the limited edition RS500 we are unveiling at the Leipzig Show today will remain the ultimate Focus RS, this upgrade provides existing customers with the attractive Ford-approved performance enhancement option that many RS owners have been asking for.”

The MP350 package upgrade should allow the RS to hit 0-62 mph in 5.6 seconds with a top speed of 163 mph.

Press Release:

FORD-APPROVED PERFORMANCE UPGRADE FOR FOCUS RS NOW AVAILABLE

* Ford-approved 350 PS engine upgrade for new and existing Focus RS owners
* Engine modifications developed in partnership with Mountune Performance
* Full testing and durability programme ensures no impact on standard warranty
* Upgrade available through selected Ford dealers, initially in the UK, with a European roll-out planned to follow

COLOGNE, April 9, 2010 – Owners and buyers of the current generation Ford Focus RS 305 PS superhatch can now access a Ford-approved performance upgrade package that boosts peak output to 350 PS and 460 Nm of torque.

The MP350 package is available from Mountune Performance via a selected network of Ford dealers, initially in the UK, with a European roll-out planned to follow. This is the only Ford-approved upgrade for the Focus RS and also the only aftermarket package available which does not invalidate the standard Ford warranty.

The engine modifications it provides are similar to those developed for the exclusive new limited edition Focus RS500 model and were developed by Ford’s Team RS powertrain engineers in partnership with Mountune’s performance specialists.

The Focus RS performance upgrade increases peak power from 305 PS to 350 PS, while torque rises by 20 Nm to 460 Nm. Modifications include a larger intercooler, a larger air filter box, a larger diameter exhaust downpipe and an uprated fuel pump, along with an updated software calibration.

Mountune also offers Ford approved performance upgrades in selected markets for the current Focus ST and Fiesta 1.6 Ti-VCT models, and the previous-generation Fiesta ST.

Mountune’s experience in motorsport and high-performance engines spans over 20 years and this strong heritage even includes the original RS500, as Mountune supplied the engines for the Ford Sierra RS500 Cosworth which won the British Touring Car Championship in 1990 driven by Robb Gravett.

Further details of the Mountune upgrade packages available for Ford vehicles, including the Focus RS, can be seen at www.mountuneperformance.com

According to a Ford insider, the limited-edition Ford Focus RS500 sold out within 12 hours of being revealed, even though FoMoCo has yet to announce prices. The source said that despite Ford being forced to unveil the car 48 hours earlier than planned, it received over 500 expressions of intent to purchase.

“From that moment on people were literally walking into dealers or calling them up and placing orders for the car,” the Ford source told AutoCar. “However, because we had to quickly bring the car’s launch forward we hadn’t even briefed the dealers on its existence. It led to some quite confused phone calls between dealers and head office.”

FoMoCo is now sorting through the list to provide equal allocation across Europe, ahead of the order books formally opening in May.

To mark the end of production for the current Ford Focus RS, Ford of Europe is celebrating with this limited-edition RS model called the RS500. Limited to just 500 units, the Ford Focus RS500 will make its debut at the 2010 Leipzig Motor Show in Germany next month.

“We were determined to mark the end of production for the current and acclaimed Focus RS with something even more special,” said Joe Bakaj, Ford of Europe’s vice president for Product Development. “From its stunning looks to its intoxicating performance, we have no doubt that the RS500 will be appreciated and quickly snapped up by performance car enthusiasts.

Power for the Ford Focus RS500 comes from the same turbocharged Duratec RS 2.5-L 5-cylinder engine found in the RS. However, power has been increased to 345-hp with a maximum torque of 339 lb-ft. That allows the Focus RS500 to go from 0-62 mph in 5.6 seconds with a top speed of 163 mph.

Sales of the Ford Focus RS500 will start in May for 20 lucky European countries.

“¢	Global debut at the Leipzig Motor Show on April 9 2010 ““ further information available from dedicated website: www.focusrs500.com

COLOGNE, March 31, 2010 ““ A new and powerful limited edition Focus RS model, called the RS500, is being launched as the ultimate performance Ford and will provide the definitive driving experience for serious performance car enthusiasts.

Making its global debut at the 2010 Leipzig Motor Show in Germany on April 9, the new model has been given the RS500 designation to highlight its strictly-limited production run of 500 individually-numbered vehicles, all of which will be offered for customers to purchase.

The new Focus RS500 features a muscular 350 PS 2.5-litre 5-cylinder engine, which generates 15 per cent more power than the standard Focus RS and delivers truly exhilarating performance.

The RS500″s breathtaking power is matched by an equally dramatic appearance. The limited edition model sports a unique matt black ‘foil’ paint finish with matching alloy wheels to deliver a powerful visual impact which is unlike any other production Ford.

“This vehicle joins a long line of iconic RS Fords and is a worthy recipient of the RS500 name, which became synonymous with success on the road and track with the legendary Sierra RS500 Cosworth that dominated saloon car racing during the late 1980s,” Bakaj added.

Strictly Limited Production Run of 500 Individually Numbered Vehicles

The RS500 marks the end of production for the current generation Focus RS, with the last vehicles scheduled to leave Ford”s Saarlouis Assembly Plant in Germany during September 2010.

While overwhelming customer demand has ensured that total Focus RS output is expected to exceed 11,000 units (significantly more than the 7,000 to 8,000 originally forecast), production of the RS500 will start at Ford’s Saarlouis plant in Germany during May and will be strictly limited to 500 customer vehicles for twenty European markets.

Each RS500 will carry a metal plaque on the centre console, hand-engraved with a unique identification number from 001 to 500.

A small number of pre-production vehicles produced for internal Ford use ““ such as product development or press demonstrators ““ will have their own unique numbering scheme, to ensure the exclusivity of the 500 customer cars.

Demand for the RS500 is expected to exceed supply by a considerable margin, and the full production run of just 500 vehicles is being allocated across 20 European markets in line with the anticipated level of interest. For some countries, the very small number of vehicles allocated means the RS500 will, indeed, be a very exclusive purchase for its customers.

A dedicated website ““ www.focusrs500.com ““ will allow customers and enthusiasts to gain further information, including projected quantities of available vehicles by market, plus access to download photography and video clips. The site will also provide links to national Ford websites so customers can identify dealers and prices.

Focus RS also has its own Facebook page ““ www.facebook.com/fordfocusrs ““ with more than 13,500 fans from across the world, and RS500 launch activities will be shared on this site.

Upgraded 350 PS Powertrain

“The more urgent engine sound and sheer thrust of the mid-range performance tell the driver immediately that this is not a standard Focus RS,” said Gunnar Herrmann, Ford”s Global C-Car Vehicle Line Director. “With 15 per cent more power and the same gutsy, sporting character, our new powertrain gives the RS500 the special engine it deserves.”

To provide the RS500 with a fitting power unit, the 305 PS turbocharged Duratec RS 2.5-litre engine from the standard Focus RS has been upgraded to deliver significantly more top-end and mid-range power, but without compromising the base engine”s strength and responsiveness at lower revs.

Peak power is increased by 45PS to 350PS at 6,000rpm, while torque has been increased from 440 to 460Nm, delivered across a broad speed range from 2,500 to 4,500rpm.

To achieve the required balance of muscular mid-range and top-end performance, the engine has benefitted from a comprehensive package of enhancements aimed at improving the engine”s breathing and combustion.

The changes include a significantly larger air-to-air intercooler to deliver a cooler, denser charge; a larger air filter box for increased airflow; larger diameter exhaust downpipe; and an uprated fuel pump, along with an updated software calibration to optimise the performance of the revised engine.

“The engine”s improved breathing has allowed us to increase power without having to raise turbo boost pressure significantly,” explained Herrmann. “This has made it possible to enhance peak performance while maintaining the excellent driveability, fuel consumption and emissions of the standard Focus RS.”

Preliminary performance figures for the Focus RS500 indicate that it achieves 0-100km/h in 5.6 seconds, with a top speed similar to the 263 km/h in the standard RS.

Engineered by Performance Car Enthusiasts

The Focus RS500 engine has been modified by a team enthusiast engineers from Ford TeamRS in partnership with Revolve Technologies, the automotive engineering firm which develops Ford approved performance upgrades through its Mountune brand.

The shared development and testing programme ensured that the 350 PS Duratec RS engine achieved the specified performance targets while also delivering the standards of durability and serviceability expected by Ford RS customers.

The comprehensive engineering details already developed for the 305 PS Focus RS engine ““ including a revised cylinder head gasket, ultra-durable metal sprayed cylinder bores, revised pistons and new connecting rods ““ have ensured that no further mechanical changes were required to cope with the increased performance of the 350 PS RS500 unit.

Advanced Front Wheel Drive Chassis

A key factor in the success of the latest generation Focus RS has been its advanced front wheel drive chassis, which combines a wider track, the unique “˜RevoKnuckle” front suspension design and a Quaife helical limited slip differential to deliver responsive steering, outstanding traction and a minimum of unwanted torque steer.

The same chassis design has proved equally effective in handling the increased torque levels of the Focus RS500, and the specification is unchanged for this application, helping to retain the same sporting and responsive dynamic character which is central to the appeal of the acclaimed standard Focus RS.

The high-performance braking system, and the 19-inch wheels and 235/35/R19 tyres, are also carried over unchanged from the standard vehicle, although red brake calipers and a dramatic black finish for the alloy wheels are unique to the RS500.

Performance Tested to the Limit

In recognition of the extreme performance potential of the Focus RS500, the limited edition model has been subjected to a series of concentrated durability tests which have focused on the car”s track capabilities.

The development programme included a dedicated endurance test at the infamous Nürburgring Nordschleife in Germany, where Ford TeamRS engineers were joined by three Ford-employed racing drivers working in shifts to complete 10,000km of non-stop driving, equivalent to competing in ten consecutive Nürburgring 24-hour races without a break.

“We wanted to be sure that serious enthusiasts could drive the Focus RS500 to the limit on track, without any concerns about the car”s stamina,” said Matthias Tonn, Focus RS500 Chief Programme Engineer. “This meant going beyond our standard test routines, and pushing the car to the edge of its performance envelope. After 500 non-stop laps of the Nürburgring, we are very confident of its durability and delighted at the way it performed, with an 8-minute lap time within reach”.

Unique Matt Black ‘Foil’ Paint Finish for Maximum Visual Impact

The standard Focus RS already creates a lasting impression with its functional yet striking design, but the unique matt black ‘foil’ paint finish of the Focus RS500 makes this limited edition car even more special.

Stunning matt black bodywork is combined with matching metallic black alloy wheels, and the gloss black finish of the trapezoidal lower front grille and splitter, twin-blade rear spoiler and the rear venturi, which manages airflow beneath the rear of the car.

Small flashes of colour around the vehicle ““ including the red brake calipers, blue RS badges, and the special blue and red RS500 badge on the tailgate ““ only serve to emphasise the car”s unique appearance.

“We deliberately set out to ensure that the Focus RS500 looks like no other production vehicle,” added Tonn. “With its dramatic black finish and imposing stance, this car really is mean, moody and magnificent!”

The matt black foil finish for the RS500 was developed in partnership with the technology company 3M, which specialises in advanced film products for the automotive industry.

All Focus RS500 vehicles will be painted in a standard Panther Black metallic colour, before being shipped to a dedicated 3M facility near Frankfurt, Germany, where a special foil film will be applied to the bodywork to create the matt black effect.

The film is extremely durable, and is specifically designed to resist superficial marks and scratches in automotive applications. In the event of damage to the bodywork, Ford dealers will be fully supported by a Europe-wide network of 3M agents who can replace the film on the affected panels.

Special Focus RS500 Interior Detailing

Attention to detail on the RS500 exterior is also reflected inside the car, with a series of special features which are unique to this limited edition model.

The centre console is distinguished by the car’s individually-numbered metal plaque, and by a unique carbon-effect finish to the bezel which carries a distinctive RS pattern.

In contrast to the blue detailing on the standard Focus RS, the RS500 features a special red colour scheme, notably on the stitching of the leather trim on the steering wheel, door trim and gear lever gaiter, and on the floor mats.

Customers also have the option of specifying the bespoke Recaro front sports seats in full red leather, to further enhance the visual impact.

Premium Specification for All Vehicles

All Focus RS500 vehicles will be equipped to a very high specification as standard, with only two features available as optional items. In addition to the comprehensive equipment levels on the standard Focus RS, the RS500 includes the following features as standard:

“¢	Dual-zone automatic climate control “¢	Heated windscreen “¢	Rear parking distance sensors “¢	Tyre deflation detection system

“¢	Automatic headlights and rain-sensing wipers “¢	Auto dimming rear-view mirror “¢	Ford key-free start “¢	Enhanced connectivity with Bluetooth®, voice control and USB port “¢	Sony 6-CD audio system

“¢	Recaro sports front seats with partial leather trim

The two optional features are touchscreen DVD navigation and audio system, and the full leather Recaro front seats in red.

“We believe that customers lucky enough to secure one of the limited edition Focus RS500 models will be getting a real collectors item,” said Joe Bakaj. “From its stunning looks, to its immense driver appeal and its complete specification, the Focus RS500 provides enthusiasts with the ultimate performance Ford for the road.”

In its press release for the 2012 Ford Focus Wagon earlier today, FoMoCo confirmed that it is working on a global performance version of new Focus using Ford EcoBoost engine technology.

“At Geneva, Ford is also confirming that a global performance vehicle will be developed as part of the next-generation Focus range, and that it will be powered by a version of the 4-cylinder Ford EcoBoost engine family,” Ford said in a statement.

According to a report by CARandDRIVER, a Ford spokesman confirmed that the car will be identical all around the world, however, what it will be badged in each region has yet to be decided. Ford is still deciding whether the model will be called Focus SVT in the U.S. or if it will import the popular ST badge from Europe.

Either way, don’t expect this version of the high-performance Focus to be an RS, as sources confirmed that this car will be more ST in nature.

Want the Ford Focus RS in the United States? Yes, so do we. Well, be patient because the next-generation Focus RS might very well be on its way to the stateside.

While Ford executive Derrick Kuzak was heading the development of the 2000 Ford Focus, Jost Capito was in charge of transforming the compact hatch into Europe”s hot Focus RS. Now that Kuzak is responsible for all of Ford’s global products, he has called on Capito to oversee performance vehicles for all markets as the director of global performance vehicles and motorsport business. Capito will now be responsible for aligning America”s SVT, Europe”s Team RS, and Australia”s FPV, all while establishing performance vehicles that can be sold on a global basis.

In a recent interview with Automobile, when asked whether we’ll see the next-generation Ford Focus RS in the U.S., Capito said:

When you see the global vehicle lines, they offer the opportunity of global performance vehicles. The two generations of Focus we”ve had so far [internationally] were great bases for performance vehicles. The new Focus is the same, so there”s no reason if there”s one in Europe, it wouldn”t be here.

It was recently reported that the next-generation Ford Focus RS will drop the current 2.5L 5-cylinder turbo for a new 2.0L 4-cylinder EcoBoost direct-injection that will produce close to 300-hp.

Keep those fingers crossed.

We’ve always felt deprived of FoMoCo’s hot hatchback in the United States and now it seems like Ford is just rubbing it in our faces. According to latest rumors out of Europe, to bid farewell to the current Focus RS, Ford is planning a special-edition stripped-out Clubsport RS and a brand new RS based on the 2012 Ford Focus recently unveiled at the 2010 Detroit Auto Show.

The Ford Focus RS Clubsport will make its debut towards the end of the year. Production will be limited to just 500 units with power coming from an uprated 2.5L 5-cylinder turbo making 350-hp. Ford will also strip the hatch to cut weight with new lightweight racing seats and a bunch of carbon fiber. With a lowered and stiffer suspension, the Ford Focus RS Clubsport should go from 0-60 mph in 5 seconds flat.

An all new RS is in the works and sources say that model will drop the current 2.5L 5-cylinder turbo for a new 2.0L EcoBoost direct-injection that will produce close to 300-hp. 0-60 will come in the mid 5-second range with a top speed limited to 155 mph. The next-generation RS is also rumored to get a stop-start system, brake energy recovery and a dual-clutch Powershift box.

Jealous? Yup – so are we.

At the 2010 Detroit Auto Show next month, FoMoCo will unveil the next-generation Ford Focus. Of course, we’d eventually like to see Ford bring the European Focus RS hot-hatch to the states so we can do things like this to it.

Meet the Ford Focus RS by Mcchip – a German based tuner that thought 300-hp was just not enough for this already wild hatchback. With some tuning modifications, Mcchip allows the Ford Focus RS to produce a total of 401-hp with a maximum torque of 451 lb-ft.

Mcchip is also offering other packages that bring output to 305-hp.

Press Release:

Focus RS with 401 HP ““ by Mcchip-dkr GmbH

December 2009 — Quick as a bird and dressed with sportive elegance ““ these are the strengths of new Ford Focus RS. But in case of Mcchip-dkr still there is another characteristic to add: it is vigorous like a purebred sports car!

The well-known software tuner from Salzgitter/Germany has perfectly attuned the performance to the vehicle. The result is only uncompromising fun from driving but also full suitability for daily use. The engine, completely overhauled by Mcchip-dkr, reaches enormous 401 hp.

Certainly tuned by Mcchip-dkr Focus RS is an outstanding vehicle in any situation. Mcchip offers two power upratings at once. Power stage 1 transforms serial 305 hp (440 Nm) into comfortable 345 hp with no less than 520 Nm. Power stage 1 consists “žonly” in software optimization made by Mcchip-dkr, available for 799 Euro, and your car will easily reach the speed of 271 km/h.

However it is power stage 2 for 4,499 Euro that transforms Focus RS into a whole-blood athlete. Power stage 2 gives the car even 401 hp. That is enough to accelerate RS up to 278 km/h without any problems. In addition to that the torque equals to 612 Nm. That means powerful pulling and dynamic drive. The “žbig” power stage consists in the enhanced intercooler and sports exhaust system, modified inlet manifold incl. tubes, special sparking plugs as well as world famous and in-house engine electronics.

Self-confident and fast ““ that is the look of the recent creation by Mcchip-dkr, already available…

More information about the large Mcchip-dkr Improvement – program is available under: www.mcchip-dkr.com.
