The ladies and gents over at Edmunds.com appear to be running out of sensible and conventional vehicle tests, so they pitted two leaf blowers against a Ford SVT Raptor and a Fiat 500. Though the clip they produced may be sensationalized a la the National Geographic Channel or History, there is a clear method to their madness: emissions. The seemingly off-the wall test yielded some very interesting results, which are detailed at 2:22 in the video.

The Raptor beat the Fiat and actually removed hydrocarbons that were in the air beforehand; the results thereafter were somewhat predictable: the four stroke leaf blower beat out the two stroke.

Once again, the test brings up a significant point: due to pretty stringent emissions controls even on the 411 bhp single cam V8 in the Raptor, the US is at no risk of turning into a massive, smog-veiled Los Angeles. Obviously LA has a few other factors such as a mountain range-induced inversion layer, but I think you catch my drift.

Last year, Ford rolled 7,085 Raptors off dealer’s lots, and sales have been growing since. Through October this year, 8,105 Raptors have been sold, leaving dealers with little inventory, as the pickup only spends about 16 days, on average, in showrooms.

Ford originally debuted the Raptor with a price tag of $38,995.00 for 2010. For the 2011 model year, the automaker upgraded the standard motor to the popular 6.2-liter V8 that makes 411-hp, along with the SuperCrew Cab variant, causing prices to climb along with the demand. Sticker price for the 2012 F-150 SVT Raptor Super Cab start at $43,565, and $46,465 for the SuperCrew Cab.

To keep up with consumer interest, Ford has increased production for the 2012 model from two units per hour to three.

“A major element of the SVT Raptor program is our work to continuously expand the capabilities it offers to customers. We want to cover all dimensions of off-roading – from desert running to rock climbing,” said Raj Sarkar, Ford F-150 Marketing manager. “We always aim to keep the product fresh and exciting, and all of our changes for 2012 reflect that.”

Going into 2012, the Ford F150 Raptor features a new Torsen front differential that increases grip for the front axle allowing for more versatility.

“This system is key for letting Raptor customers tackle new ground in their truck,” said Kerry Baldori, Ford SVT Global Performance Vehicle chief functional engineer. “Its extreme capability lends itself well to rock climbing situations.”

In addition to the new diff, the SVT Raptor also receives a unique off-road front camera system, the first of its kind in the segment. Using an eight section portion of the 4.2-inch LCD infotainment screen, the camera appears with a series of dynamic and static overlays to aid drivers.

Other updates include new exterior and interior visual appointments. A new Raptor logo makes its way on the F150 as well as more options of graphics for buyers to customize from. A matte anodized blue interior color was also added to replace the outgoing blue interior and is available on all colors except the new exterior Race Red.

Power still comes from the standard 6.2-liter V8 engine, which produces 411 horsepower and 434 lb.-ft. of torque – making the F-150 SVT Raptor the most powerful half-ton pickup on the market.

We here at egmCarTech absolutely adore the Ford F-150 SVT Raptor. I believe most of the team here would agree with me when I say that we would use it as a personal daily driver, as a family vehicle, as a sports car and as a source of transportation if the world was ever infested with zombies.

Much to our liking a custom tuner shop in Abu Dhabi (UAE) received an interesting request from an own of a 2011 Ford F-150 SVT Raptor SuperCrew to turn is pride and joy into an SUV – but not just any SUV – an SUV with a total of 6-doors.

How I wish I had money to blow like that.

Even though gas prices are at the highest point since July 2008, sales of the Ford F-150 SVT Raptor managed to hit record levels in April. Ford ended up selling a total of 1,183 F-150 SVT Raptors last month, according to Ford SVT spokesman Henry Platt.

Surprisingly, that’s 231 more than the 952 Honda Ridgeline pickups sold in April.

Not like that’s a big deal but as PickupTrucks.com points out both trucks appeal to niche buyers.

FoMoCo vehicles like being the best-in-class for a lot of things – but one things they are most proud of is being the best-in-class for fuel-economy. The Dearborn automaker announced today that its 302-hp 3.7L V6 2011 Ford F-150 will average a best-in-class 23 mpg highway, pending final EPA certification. It will deliver 16 mpg city.

Moving up a notch, the mid-range engine offering – the 360-hp 5.0L V8 – will average a best-in-class 21 mpg highway (4×2 configuration).

“Seventy percent of F-150 customers said better fuel economy is what they”d like improved most in their truck,” said Doug Scott, Truck Group marketing manager. “The 2011 Ford F-150 does exactly that with best-in-class fuel economy, best-in-class capability and power, and more powertrain choices to suit their different needs.”

The 6.2L V8 will be the premium engine offering on the 2011 F-150 and is now standard on F-150 SVT Raptor. It will average a projected 12/17 mpg (city/highway), pending final EPA certification.

The 3.5L EcoBoost V6, which will be available in early 2011, produces a total of 365-hp on regular fuel and best-in-class 420 lb-ft of torque at 2,500 rpm vs. premium V8 competitors. The EcoBoost helps the 2011 Ford F-150 get a best-in-class 11,300 lbs maximum trailer tow vs. all competitors and a best-in-class 3,060 lbs payload vs. all competitors.

The new 5.0-liter V8 engine is projected to deliver best-in-class 21 mpg highway, pending EPA certification.

“The all-new engine lineup for the 2011 Ford F-150 is focused on delivering what matters most to truck customers ““ best-in-class power, capability, durability and fuel economy,” said Barb Samardzich, vice president of Powertrain Engineering. “Each engine offers an unequaled combination of these attributes.”

The new 3.7-liter V6 is projected to deliver 16 mpg city and 23 mpg highway in 4×2 configuration. The new 5.0-liter V8 is projected to deliver 15 mpg city and 21 mpg highway in 4×2 configuration. No manufacturer offers better fuel economy numbers in these respective segments.

The new V6 and V8 make up half of an all-new powertrain lineup for the 2011 Ford F-150, part of the most extensive engine makeover in the 62-year history of F-Series. Also new for 2011 are the 6.2-liter V8 and 3.5-liter EcoBoost™ truck engine. The EcoBoost will be available in early 2011. Trucks with the 3.7-liter V6, 5.0-liter V8 and 6.2-liter V8 will arrive in dealer showrooms later this year.

Each engine is mated to a fuel-saving six-speed automatic transmission. Ford is the only manufacturer to equip its entire full-size pickup lineup with six-speed gearboxes as standard.

This versatile new powertrain lineup enables F-150 customers to choose the engine that best suits their needs.

Several other improvements help increase fuel economy
The extensive work to maximize the efficiency of each engine is complemented by additional improvements to the transmission and other areas of the new F-150.

The tried-and-true 6R80 six-speed automatic transmission has been upgraded to bring available customer conveniences such as SelectShift capability with progressive range select and manual mode to the F-150 for the first time.

The transmission has been optimized for each new engine. The transmission matched to the 3.7-liter engine, for example, has fewer clutch plates compared with the other F-150 engines.

A one-way clutch, which allows for smoother 1-2 and 2-1 shifts, faster downshifts and improved fuel economy, has been added. The gear ratios, span and shift schedule have been optimized for better off-the-line performance and improved fuel economy. The double-overdrive gear also provides better fuel economy.

Another fuel saver is the addition of class-exclusive electric power-assisted steering (EPAS) to the 3.7-liter V6, 5.0-liter V8 and 3.5-liter EcoBoost powertrains. The EPAS system replaces a conventional hydraulic system, which runs continuously off the engine, with a system that draws power only when needed. Ford is the first manufacturer to widely offer EPAS on full-size pickup trucks. EPAS contributes about a 4 percent fuel-economy benefit compared with conventional hydraulic systems.

“Our new engine lineup allows greater flexibility for customers to select the powertrain choice that best suits their needs,” said Samardzich. “And each engine delivers outstanding power, capability and fuel economy.”

3.7-liter four-valve Ti-VCT V6
The 3.7-liter will be the most powerful, capable and fuel-efficient base V6 of any truck in its class. Key attributes include:

FoMoCo has dropped pricing on the new 2011 Ford F-150 SVT Raptor and the four-door 2011 F-150 SVT Raptor SuperCrew. Sales will start later this year with the Ford F-150 SVT Raptor carrying a price tag of $41,550, while the SuperCrew carrying a starting price of $44,135. Both prices do not include the $975 destination and delivery fee.

The 2011 Ford F-150 SVT Raptor now comes standard with the previously optional 411-hp 6.2L V8 engine standard for the new model. The standard 2010 model year F-150 SVT Raptor was powered by a 320-hp 5.4L V8 with prices starting at $38,020.

The Ford F-150 SVT Raptor is one good looking pickup but it looks even better with graphics. Building on the Ford F-150 SVT Raptor “digital mud” graphics from the 2010 model year, the 2011 Ford F-150 SVT Raptor will get an optional hood graphic reminiscent of the matte black hoods from racing Ford Broncos of the 1970s.

“A good majority of our owners are into outdoor activities, and those are the type of people who are drawn to the graphics,” said Bruce Williams, F-150 SVT Raptor designer. “The truck is flashy, but in a different way. It looks like it can go anywhere and actually can, and that”s where the graphics come in.”

In fact, the latest graphic available on the 2011 model has a history in off-road racing. “When I started looking at off-road racing history for inspiration, I noticed that a lot of Ford Broncos from the 1970s were running matte black hoods to reduce the glare,” said Bruce Williams, F-150 SVT Raptor designer. “So it”s a protective graphic that has a functional benefit and ties in with our racing heritage.”

Bill Stroppe, a member of the Off-Road Motorsports Hall of Fame, is the mastermind behind some of those famed Broncos. Stroppe built race-prepped Broncos that competed in and won off-road races, such as the Baja 1000. Between 1971 and 1975 Stroppe”s shop modified about 650 Broncos, coined Baja Broncos, for Ford customers based on the cars that his team built.

The new optional hood graphic adds a personalized and functional touch to F-150 SVT Raptor. Matte black accent graphics ““ including the F-150 SVT Raptor logo ““ run along the hood, also helping to reduce glare. The Raptor logo in the graphic is done in body-color bleed-through, similar to “SVT” on the side vent. “F-150″ and “SVT” are written in dark gray.

Inspiration from experience
The digital mud, a combination of matte and glossy black paint, is splashed across the box side of the F-150 SVT Raptor in a very abstract way, but the execution is actually quite precise. The design is meant to replicate the mud pattern that would be thrown from the truck”s unique BFGoodrich® off-road tires.

“For off-roaders, mud on their truck is a badge of honor,” said Williams. “Owners like to show what they have experienced with the amount of mud on their truck. But they also are proud of the condition their truck is in. Digital mud provides the best of both worlds, so even when the truck is clean, it still shows off its true nature.”

And designer Williams knows all about making the most of the elements.

Williams is an avid outdoor athlete who drew inspiration for the digital mud graphics that first appeared on the 2010 F-150 SVT Raptor while on a ski trip. He noticed that ski and snowboard graphics were trending toward using less color and becoming more tone-on-tone. They also were mixing in with patterned graphics, and he thought that would be a perfect way to add a new level of personalization to F-150 SVT Raptor.

For those customers who do take their truck everywhere, the digital mud graphics bring the added benefit of protecting the paint from rocks and trees. Both graphics underwent durability tests to ensure they could withstand the elements.

2012 Hennessey VelociRaptor APV

Truck based SUVs seem to be dying off by the dozens as automakers shift their focus to offering car-based crossovers with better fuel-economy. Well, thank God for tuners like Hennessey that still like doing something crazy with pickups and SUVs once in a while.

Hennessey announced today that it is introducing a new lineup called Hennessey Armored Performance Vehicles (APV), a division that will provide improved  acceleration, braking and handling performance on late-model armored vehicles.

“Adding armor protection to SUV’s such as Chevy Suburbans and Cadillac Escalades can easily increase vehicle weights from 6,000 lbs to over 10,000 lbs”, said company founder and president, John Hennessey. “We are excited to be able to apply our 20 years of high-performance experience to the armor vehicle industry.”

2011 Ford F-150 SVT Raptor SuperCrew

The Ford F-150 SVT Raptor is already known for its unmatched capability and is now ready to offer customers more for the 2011 model year by making the previously optional 411-hp 6.2L V8 engine standard for the new model.

“With 411 horsepower and 434 lb.-ft. of torque, the engine makes the F-150 SVT Raptor the most powerful half-ton pickup on the market, giving customers new levels of capability, Ford said in a statement. “Low-speed maneuvers, such as rock crawling, driving up a grade or accelerating through deep sand, require much less throttle input because of the engine”s increased torque.”

Also new for 2011, and this is really where the big news is, is the availability of the Ford F-150 SVT Raptor SuperCrew. The SuperCrew variant gets a larger 36-gallon fuel tank and increased towing capability ““ rated at 8,000 pounds.

The F-150 SVT Raptor is 7 inches wider than a base F-150 to make room for the additional suspension components that give Raptor its unparalleled off-road abilities. The wider stance also gives the truck an aggressive appearance. Internal triple-bypass shocks by FOX Racing Shox ““ the first on a production truck ““ provide position-sensitive damping and extra suspension travel for extreme off-roading and a smooth ride on the road.

Raptor also has unique cast-aluminum front control arms and SVT-tuned 35-inch BFGoodrich® All-Terrain TA/KO 315/70-17 tires. These components give Raptor 11.2 inches of front suspension travel and 12.1 inches of rear suspension travel on either SuperCab or the new SuperCrew.

The new available 145-inch-wheelbase SuperCrew offering with a 5.5-foot box adds to the extensive list of F-150 SVT Raptor features. While contributing additional space and flexibility for the customer, the SuperCrew delivers performance as well.

Applying lessons learned from the SuperCab F-150 SVT Raptor, engineers were able to tune the truck to handle off-road events with ease. The 12-inch-longer wheelbase on SuperCrew also delivers the benefit of a more comfortable ride, especially in rough off-road situations.

“We spent a lot of time getting the ride and suspension characteristics of the SuperCrew similar to that of the SuperCab, and we were successful in getting the same character and flavor out of the SuperCrew,” said Jamal Hameedi, SVT chief nameplate engineer. “While the SuperCab and SuperCrew both have different strengths, each is worthy of the Raptor nameplate.”

A larger 36-gallon fuel tank and increased towing capability ““ rated at 8,000 pounds ““ keep F-150 SVT Raptor SuperCrew a mainstay in the desert environment, with capabilities as a chase or tow truck.

Revved up and ready

The previously optional 6.2-liter V8 engine, which produces 411 horsepower and 434 lb.-ft. of torque, will now be the standard engine for the 2011 F-150 SVT Raptor, the most powerful half-ton pickup on the market.

The Ford powertrain team performed extensive testing to ensure the engine would live up to the Built Ford Tough promise. Hundreds of additional tests beyond the normal verification of truck engines, as well as vehicle testing on a 62-mile durability loop in the desert that simulates the Baja 1000, validated the performance of the engine for reliability and longevity in the harshest conditions.

New color and graphic options

Raptor’s exterior also receives some new touches for 2011, in the form of an additional paint color ““ Ingot Silver Metallic ““ that will be available with the standard black interior, or the optional Molten Orange Interior Accent Package.

A new optional hood graphic adds a personalized and functional touch to F-150 SVT Raptor. Inspired by older off-road racing Ford Broncos, matte black accent graphics ““ including the F-150 SVT Raptor logo ““ run along the hood, also helping to reduce glare. The Raptor logo in the graphic is done in body-color bleed-through, similar to “SVT” on the side vent. “F-150″ and “SVT” are written in dark gray. The graphic is available with or without the box side graphics.

More capability, more technology

Key to helping customers take advantage of all the capability offered by the F-150 SVT Raptor is a standard 4.2-inch LCD (liquid crystal display) productivity screen that is integrated in the center of the new instrument gauges, which have a black face, red pointers and ice blue daytime lighting. Also used on the all-new 2011 Super Duty, the technology was specifically tailored for off-road use with Raptor.

The screen includes a unique welcome animation and offers menu options giving the customer important information related to off-road and towing performance. A truck application screen provides vehicle status information for important off-road parameters such as off-road mode, Hill Descent Control™, electronic locking differential settings and AdvanceTrac® with RSC® (Roll Stability Control™).

An off-road screen informs the customer about steering wheel angle and vehicle angle on a grade during off-road maneuvers. The menu is navigated through a five-way button on the steering wheel and is positioned between the tachometer and speedometer.

“The productivity screen is a great solution for our off-road customers,” said Hameedi. “With one glance, they can tell exactly what settings are enabled on their truck and what the driveline
is doing.”

For the customer who wants more control of transmission gear selection, SelectShift Automatic transmission functionality also is introduced on Raptor. A toggle switch located on the console shift lever engages the mode, where the transmission doesn’t second-guess the driver, giving him or her total control over gear selection and performance feel. Upshifts, for instance, are not commanded at redline, and downshifts are allowed at the lowest gear possible as defined by the engine speed.

A Raptor Plus Package debuts for 2011, offering the rear view camera and trailer brake controller. The Raptor Luxury Package also receives additional features, with folding power exterior mirrors and Remote Start System with integrated key fob added to the list.

New standard technology features for 2011 include:

In fact, 2010 F-150 SVT Raptor sales are set to exceed the highest model year sales of the F-150 SVT Lightning.

Dealers will start taking orders for the 2011 F-150 SVT Raptor today, and the trucks will be available in dealerships late this year.

Hennessey VelociRaptor 600 Twin Turbo

Following the VelociRaptor 500, Hennessey Performance Engineering is going to offer a high-performance version of the the 6.2L Boss V8 powered F-150 SVT Raptor that recently hit dealers.

The first package for the 6.2L F-150 SVT Raptor, known as the VelociRaptor 600, gives the off-roading pickup a total of 605 bhp at 5,100 rpm and 622 lb-ft torque at 3,300 rpm. The second package, known as the VelociRaptor 800, gives the Raptor 810 bhp at 5,100 rpm and 745 lb-ft torque at 3,300 rpm.

2010 Ford F-150 SVT Raptor R

We’re not really sure how much more Ford can prove its tough, off-roading skills as it already has made huge headlines with the 2010 Ford F-150 SVT Raptor. However, according to sources, Ford will take it all a step further with a new Raptor R later this year that will be powered by a the company’s 3.5L EcoBoost V6.

The Raptor R, which is a competition racing version of the F-150 SVT Raptor, has already raced in the Baja 1000. It completed that race powered by Ford’s naturally aspirated 6.2L V8 that produces 500-hp.

So how much power will the turbocharged 3.5L EcoBoost V6 Raptor R make? We’re not sure but it’s probably going to come close to the current 6.2L V8 Raptor R – if not top it, according to PickupTrucks.com

Exactly a month ago, it was rumored that Ford SVT will add a SuperCrew version of the F-150 SVT Raptor with four full-size doors. Ford officially confirmed today that the SuperCrew version of the F-150 SVT Raptor will go on sale as a 2011 model year and will only be available with the 6.2L V8 engine making 411-hp and 434 lb-ft of torque.

While Ford has yet to confirm pricing for the 2011 F-150 SVT Raptor SuperCrew, it’s likely to be a couple grand above the $41,995 for the 6.2L V8 2010 F-150 SVT Raptor SuperCab.

The move comes as sales of the 2010 Ford F-150 SVT Raptor have far outpaced the company”s original projections.

Hennessey Performance Engineering has already blessed us with the VelociRaptor 500, a 501-hp Ford F-150 SVT Raptor based on Ford’s 5.4L V8. The tuning arm is now working on the 6.2L Boss V8 powered F-150 SVT Raptor that recently hit dealers.

Before Hennessey gets to work, it decided to put the new 6.2L V8 F-150 SVT Raptor on the dyno. According to FoMoCo, the off-roading monster makes a total of 411-hp and 434 lb-ft of torque. According to Hennessey, the 6.2L V8 is sending a total of 326-hp and 346 lb-ft to the wheels. That means 0-60 mph comes in 7.3 seconds and the quarter mile comes in at 15.6 seconds at 92.3 mph.

About a month ago, Ford confirmed that sales of the 2010 Ford F-150 SVT Raptor have far outpaced the company’s original projections. The automaker said that it has received well over 5,500 orders for the new pickup and that number is expected to grow with the new 411-hp 6.2L V8, which recently hit dealerships. So what’s next for the off-roading desert king?

According to a report by Inside Line, Ford SVT will soon reveal a SuperCrew version with four full-size doors.

Sales of the Ford F-150 SVT Raptor SuperCrew version are expected to begin next year for a small price premium over the current SuperCab version.
