What you’re looking at here is a modern interpretation of the Plymouth Road Runner based on the 2009 Dodge Challenger with a 6.1L HEMI turbocharged V8 engine. The concept is being put together by an independent designer Michael Leonhard, who is selling the car once he’s done building it.

The 6.1 HEMI turbocharged V8 allows for a total of 620-hp with a maximum torque of 650 lb-ft. 0-60 mph should come in 3.8 seconds.

Even before it’s built, Leonhard has put the one-off model up for grabs on eBay with a Buy it Now price tag of $950,000. Of course, you want to be careful before you go spending close to a million on this car since Leonhard says “in order to improve the finished product, changes to the design may occur during the building process.”

The finished model will make its debut at the 2010 LA Auto Show. If you have questions about the auction send an e-mail to michaelleonhard77@yahoo.de. Click here to see the eBay listing.

Dodge Motorsports Notes & Quotes – Dodge Introduces Challenger For NASCAR Nationwide Series

TALLADEGA, Ala. (Friday, Oct. 30, 2009) – Dodge Motorsports today revealed the Dodge Challenger as the “New Car” for the NASCAR Nationwide Series and announced an expansion of its partnership with Penske Racing beginning in 2010. Dodge will provide support for Penske Racing’s two-car operation in the NASCAR Nationwide Series, in addition to Penske’s three teams in the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series.

“As the performance brand of our new company, we are excited to expand our relationship with Penske Racing and introduce the iconic Dodge Challenger as our entry into the NASCAR Nationwide Series,” said Ralph Gilles, President and CEO, Dodge Car Brand. “Motorsports are a significant part of the Dodge brand’s legacy. Penske Racing has such a rich tradition in motorsports, and our partnership in the Nationwide Series will provide an excellent opportunity to showcase the Challenger and offer our loyal Dodge enthusiasts plenty of excitement in this very competitive series next year.”

Penske Racing will field two teams, both running the full-season schedule. The Dodge Challenger will be used at the four “New Car” races NASCAR has designated, starting at Daytona in July. At the other 31 events that complete the 35-race season, Penske Racing will field Dodge Chargers as it did this season with the No. 12 Verizon Wireless Dodge Charger driven by Justin Allgaier. NASCAR is expecting full integration of the “New Car” in 2011.

Joining Allgaier will be Brad Keselowski in the No. 22 Discount Tire Dodge. He also will compete in the Dodge Challenger for the four designated races and in a Charger for the remainder of the schedule.

“Today’s announcement further reinforces our relationship and commitment to Dodge Motorsports, and we are excited about our future with this great brand,” said Tim Cindric, President of Penske Racing. “We believe Dodge’s relationship with Penske Racing will continue to elevate and highlight both our brands and deliver value to Dodge enthusiasts.”

Allgaier, in his rookie season in the Nationwide Series, is currently fifth in the season point standings and the leader among Rookie of the Year candidates.

“Penske Racing has a very successful relationship with the Dodge brand,” commented Allgaier. “I am honored to be one of Dodge Motorsport’s drivers and to be able to drive the new Challenger in the NASCAR Nationwide Series is going to be awesome. The car looks great and will give the Nationwide Series its own identity.”

2010 Dodge Challenger
The Dodge Challenger merges the best American muscle-car characteristics—unmistakable design, world-class handling, powerful engines and technology—to delight driving enthusiasts across several generations. The two-door coupe accommodates up to five passengers and is produced from the company’s proven rear-wheel-drive platform. With three models of head-turning styling, two legendary HEMI® V-8 engine choices, up to 25 highway miles per gallon, more than 25 safety and security features and modern amenities, it’s no surprise Dodge Challenger was awarded J.D. Power and Associates “Most Appealing Midsize Sporty Car” in its 2009 APEAL Study.

“The Dodge Challenger has proven to be one of the most sought after high-performance vehicles on the street today,” said Dave Bailey, Senior Manager of Motorsports Engineering and SRT Body, Interior and Electrical. “Sharing our consumer’s passion for performance through the race version of our Dodge Challenger will continue to showcase the unique engineering brought to our race and production vehicles.”

Dodge will continue its support of Penske Racing’s three-car operation in the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series in 2010 with drivers Kurt Busch, Sam Hornish Jr. and Keselowski.

The No. 12 Dodge Challenger will take part in Monday’s NASCAR Nationwide test session at Talladega Superspeedway for the “new cars” with Allgaier driving.

About Dodge
Dodge is a full line of cars, SUVs and MPVs that are agile, daring, sensible and inventive. The product line includes the Dodge Caliber, Dodge Avenger, Dodge Challenger, Dodge Charger, Dodge Grand Caravan, Dodge Journey, Dodge Nitro and Dodge Viper SRT10.

Dodge introduced two new vehicles last year: the all-new 2009 Dodge Journey, the brand’s first crossover vehicle and the 2009 Dodge Challenger, a modern-day American muscle car. Dodge also celebrated the 25th anniversary of the minivan during the 2009 model year. With more than 65 minivan-firsts introduced since 1983 and more than 12 million Dodge and Chrysler minivans sold, Chrysler Group LLC has solidified its leadership in the segment. J.D. Power and Associates further acknowledged this leadership by naming the Dodge Grand Caravan the Most Dependable Van for 2009. The 2010 Dodge Grand Caravan continues to set the mark in the minivan segment with unsurpassed fuel economy of 17 city / 25 highway mpg and minivan-first innovations including the segment’s only Stow ‘n Go® and Swivel ‘n Go™ seating and storage systems. The 2010 Dodge Avenger, with ESC, also earned the 2009 Top Safety Pick rating from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS).

If you know anything about drag racing than you definitely have heard of ‘Big Daddy’ Don Garlits. Known as the father of drag racing, Garlits retired drag racing in 1992 due to a separated retina as a result of a 4g deceleration produced by a Top Fuel Dragster’s braking parachutes. He came back for a short period from 1998 to 2003 and hung his helmet up once again… but not for good.

Garlits is now making a comeback to NHRA for the first time since 2003 and will be driving his Dodge Challenger Drag Pak by Mopar. His historic run is scheduled at the Drag Pak on Wednesday, September 2nd, at O’Reilly Raceway Park in Indianapolis.

Press Release:

‘Big Daddy’ Don Garlits to Return to NHRA Drag Racing in a Dodge Challenger Drag Pak by Mopar® at Mac Tools U.S. Nationals

Garlits will make his first appearance in organized drag racing in six years

Center Line, Mich., Aug 31, 2009 – “Big Daddy” Don Garlits is making a comeback to NHRA competition for the first time since 2003, driving his Dodge Challenger Drag Pak by Mopar® into the heat of NHRA Stock eliminations at the Mac Tools U.S. Nationals on Labor Day weekend. His historic first run in the Drag Pak will be on Wednesday, Sept. 2, in A/Stock Automatic qualifying at O’Reilly Raceway Park in Indianapolis. The full U.S. Nationals event is scheduled to begin Sept. 2 with final eliminations on Monday, Sept. 7.

Garlits hung up his helmet after Top Fuel qualifying at the U.S. Nationals exactly six years ago in 2003. He last ran a stock class car in 1963 when he competed in a 1963 Dodge Max Wedge drag package car carrying “Garlits Dodge” graphics. His new Dodge Challenger Drag Pak by Mopar has the same lettering emblazoned on its sides, along with the same Mopar graphics from his historic run last year alongside “Miss Mighty Mopar” Judy Lilly in Drag Pak prototypes at the Mopar Mile-High NHRA Nationals.

“I like my Dodge Challenger Drag Pak much better than a dragster,” said Garlits, referring to the current way Top Fuel dragsters are campaigned. “It takes 25 people to get a dragster to the line these days. All I have to do with the Dodge Challenger is turn the key and take it there. When the light turns green I have a ten-second ride-which is almost three times what I used to get-and I even have time to look at the tach and shift gears.”

“Big Daddy’s” 2009 Dodge Challenger is the first Drag Pak by Mopar ever made. He took delivery at the Performance Racing Industry show in December 2008, receiving the keys along with a certificate of authenticity from Mopar. Garlits put the Drag Pak by Mopar through test and exhibition runs at the World Series of Drag Racing at Cordova Dragway Park in Cordova, Ill., last weekend.

Garlits retired for the first time in 1987, but returned for one race at Atlanta in 1992 and made a 300-mph run at the U.S. Nationals in Indianapolis in 2001. He then ran a limited schedule of four NHRA National events each year in 2002 and 2003 before he stepped out of Top Fuel at the request of his wife, Pat. “I didn’t want to come home and find my clothes all over the front yard,” he said at the time he acquired his new Dodge Challenger, explaining that he had the home-front green light to run a doorslammer in competition, referring to his Drag Pak vehicle.

Garlits statistics

• 17 World Championship Titles and 144 National event wins
• Voted #1 Drag Racer for the past 50 years by the NHRA in 2001
• Won the prestigious U.S. Nationals eight times
• Car Craft Magazine Top Fuel Driver of the Year: 1969-70, 1972-73, 1975-78 & 1986
• Car Craft Magazine “Man of the Year”: 1969, 1971-73
• American Hot Rod Association “Fuel Driver of the Year”: 1971-74
The Mopar Brand: Authentic Motor Parts and Accessories for Chrysler, Jeep® and Dodge
When Chrysler bought Dodge in 1928, the need for a dedicated parts manufacturer, supplier and distribution system to support the growing enterprise led to the formation of the Chrysler Motor Parts Corporation (CMPC) in 1929.

Mopar-a simple contraction of the words MOtor and PARts-was trademarked for a line of antifreeze products in 1937. It also was widely used as a moniker for the CMPC.

The Mopar brand made its mark in the 1960s-the muscle car era. The Chrysler Corporation built race-ready Dodge and Plymouth “package cars” equipped with special high-performance parts. Mopar carried a line of “special parts” for super stock drag racers and developed its racing parts division called Mopar Performance Parts to enhance speed and handling for both road and racing use.

In addition to its proud muscle-car heritage, Mopar established a solid reputation as a one-stop shop for proven, quality-tested, reliable and original parts. Just this year, in 2009, Mopar has introduced more than 200 new parts and accessories.

“Mopar parts are unique in that they are engineered by the same team that creates all of our factory-authorized vehicle specifications for Chrysler, Jeep® and Dodge vehicles,” said Pietro Gorlier, President & CEO, Mopar Service, Parts & Customer Care, Chrysler Group LLC. “At Mopar, we offer more than 280,000 parts and accessories for customers who want to customize and refresh their rides.”

Today, Mopar is responsible for the distribution of authentic Mopar replacement parts, components and accessories for Chrysler, Jeep and Dodge vehicles sold in more than 90 countries. To assure quality, reliability and durability, all Mopar parts and accessories are designed in strict adherence to Chrysler engineering standards.

For its October issue, Consumer Reports tested six sports cars and coupes to figure out which is the best overall. The test included a Hyundai Genesis Coupe, a Nissan 370Z, a Subaru WRX and Detroit’s Big 3 muscle cars – the 2010 Ford Mustang, the 2010 Chevrolet Camaro and the 2009 Dodge Challenger.

After running all six through their tests, Consumer Reports picked the 2010 Mustang with an over all rating of Very Good and a road test score of 78. The Mustang beat its other two Detroit rivals – the 2010 Camaro and the 2009 Challenger, which received an overall score of 71 and 53 respectively.

“The Mustang topped this group by delivering strong acceleration, communicative steering, and the most agile handling,” said David Champion, senior director of CR’s Auto Test Center in East Haddam, Connecticut.

Ford Mustang Outpoints Chevrolet Camaro and Dodge Challenger in Consumer Reports Tests of Sports Cars and Coupes

Hyundai Genesis Coupe, Nissan 370Z, and redesigned Subaru WRX get Very Good road test scores

YONKERS, N.Y., Aug. 31 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ — The freshened Ford Mustang outpointed two other reincarnated muscle cars — the Chevrolet Camaro and the Dodge Challenger — as well as the new Hyundai Genesis Coupe in Consumer Reports’ tests of six sporty cars and coupes in the October issue.

The Mustang received a Very Good overall road test score of 78, outpointing the Camaro which received a Very Good 71, and the Challenger, which received a Good 53 points. CR’s engineers found the Mustang’s 2010 freshening makes it an even more balanced and satisfying driver’s car than ever before.

The new Camaro shares basic underpinnings with the Pontiac G8 sedan. The Challenger is based on the large Chrysler 300 and Dodge Charger rear-wheel-drive sedans. The Hyundai Genesis Coupe received a Very Good test score and is distinct from the rest of the group. It is loosely based on the Genesis luxury sedan and is powered by either a turbocharged four-cylinder or V6 engine, in contrast to the muscle cars’ V8s.

CR also tested the redesigned Nissan 370Z two-seat coupe, an agile sports car which received a Very Good test score, and the updated and improved 2009 Subaru Impreza WRX, which also received a Very Good test score.

Prices ranged from $38,565 for the 370Z to $26,088 for the WRX. The Mustang has average reliability and is Recommended, as is the WRX. The other models are too new to have reliability data for CR to Recommend them. CR only Recommends vehicles that have performed well in its tests, have at least average predicted reliability based on CR’s Annual Car Reliability Survey of its more than seven million print and web subscribers, and performed at least adequately if crash-tested or included in a government rollover test.

Full tests and ratings of the sporty cars test group appear in the October issue of Consumer Reports, which goes on sale September 1. The reports are also available to subscribers of www.ConsumerReports.org . Updated daily, ConsumerReports.org is the go-to site for the latest auto reviews, product news, blogs on breaking news and car buying information.

In everyday driving, the Mustang corners with agility and the highway ride is civilized. The Ford Mustang GT premium, ($34,725 Manufacturer’s Suggested Retail Price as tested) is powered by a 315-hp, 4.6-liter V8 engine that delivers strong acceleration and gets 20 mpg overall in CR’s own fuel economy tests. The engine has a deep burble that is pleasing to listen to. The five-speed manual transmission shifts smoothly and accurately. Braking is Very Good. The 2010 freshening brought upgraded interior materials and better fit and finish.

The Camaro provides blistering performance and handles capably, but its girth undermines its agility. The Chevrolet Camaro 2SS ($35,425, MSRP as tested), is powered by a 426-hp, 6.2-liter, V8 engine that delivers very strong performance and 18 mpg overall. The engine sounds great when the throttle is punched. The six-speed manual transmission has a good feel. Braking is excellent. The interior is nicely finished despite gaps around the instrument panel and some cheap plastics.

With exhilarating straight-line acceleration, a brawny V8, and stock-car styling, the Challenger recaptures the character of the American muscle car. The Dodge Challenger R/T ($36,600, MSRP as tested), is powered by a 370-hp, 5.7-liter “Hemi” V8 engine that delivers strong performance and 18 mpg overall. The optional six-speed manual transmission shifts well with a pistol-like grip that fits snugly in hand. Whatever wind and road noise there is, and it’s not much, is overwhelmed by the invigorating engine growl. Braking is mediocre and it has a big car feel rather than a sports car. The well-assembled interior has a nicely padded dash and nostalgic horizontal seat stitching.

The Genesis Coupe has agile handling that makes make it fun to drive, which is unusual for a Hyundai. The Hyundai Genesis Coupe 3.8 Grand Touring ($28,375, MSRP as tested), is powered by a 306-hp, 3.8-liter V6 engine and gets an impressive 23 mpg overall. The V6 engine smoothly hums under acceleration. However, the interaction of the six-speed manual transmission’s shifter and heavy clutch make it a challenge to get smooth shifts. Braking is very good. The interior is nicely finished, although it’s not luxurious like the Genesis sedan’s.

The WRX’s ride is taut, yet controlled and the car is steady yet compliant on the highway. The Subaru WRX ($26,088, MSRP as tested), is powered by a 265-hp, 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine that delivers very strong acceleration and gets 24 mpg overall. It’s well matched to a five-speed manual transmission. In everyday driving, the WRX engine has the manners of a typical four-cylinder with mileage to match. Braking is excellent. Interior plastics are all hard, but the interior is well-assembled.

Redesigned for 2009, the two-seat 370Z is shorter and better finished than its predecessor, the 350Z. Great handling and braking are high points of the 370Z, as is abundant power. The cabin is cramped and noisy, it’s hard to see out, and the stiff ride is wearing over time. The Nissan 370Z Touring ($38,565, MSRP as tested), is a real sports car with quick handling and lots of grip. It is powered by a 332-hp, 3.7-liter V6 engine that gets 23 mpg overall, but on premium fuel. The six-speed manual transmission’s short-throw shifter has a good feel. Braking is excellent. The interior has exceptional fit and finish.

You know the routine by now. It’s time to bring together some of the random things we’ve been reading on our laptops.

2009 Lancia Delta had us ‘wowed’ in Angeles and Demons: Yes, I know that Angeles and Demons has been out for a while now, but I went to see it this past weekend with some family members. When the 2009 Lancia Delta made its debut onscreen, I was totally impressed by the car. I had family members turning to me going “What car is that?” – like I’m a database for cars or something. Nonetheless, it’s pretty damn good looking. Just another product we’d like to see in the U.S. from Fiat.

2009 Lancia Delta:

GM to launch Buick campaign to promote new models: Buick is going to be one of the four core brands of the ‘New GM’ when its comes out of bankruptcy. The automaker is now putting together a new major brand reintroduction campaign scheduled to start on Sunday with TV commercials, print and online ads. There is a sneak peak on the Buick Web site for now. – NYTimes

Ford Mustang, Dodge Challenger coming to NASCAR: Pony cars coming to NASCAR. According to Fox Sports, the Ford Mustang and the Dodge Challenger will be submitted to the NASCAR Rule Book for approval later this month. – Fox Sports (via KickingTires)

Galpin Auto Sports (or GAS) is an automobile repair shop in Van Nuys, California. GAS is better known for its TV show on USA otherwise known as Pimp My Ride on MTV. The group responsible for KITT in the 2008 Knight Rider series (and for embedding in 7-inch TV screens into bumpers on MTV’s Pimp My Ride), has now teamed up with the United States Air Force to create two customized cars for the 2009 Super Car Tour. We have to say; both vehicles have blown us away – literally.

The first vehicle, known as the ‘X-1,’ is based on a Ford Mustang. It has been painted in matte-pearlescent and features a single-driver ejections seat in the center. It also features a short shift flight stick, an advanced instrument panel that will confuse the heck out of you, a motorized steering wheel, a GPS transponder, and a touch screen monitor that displays night and thermal vision. Power comes from a 4.6L V8, which features 3-valve Ford Racing heads, a cold air intake, hot rod cams and long tube headers. All that gives the X-1 the ability to throttle 500-hp.

Click through for more info and the high-res image galleries.

Next up is the stealth-black Air Force ‘Vapor’ based on the Dodge Challenger. On the outside, Vapor features one-off carbon fiber wheels, shaker hood, radar-absorbing paint, proximity sensors and a 360- degree camera with a ¼ mile range. Open the vertical doors to the Vapor and you’ll see an interior complete with aircraft style controls, a passenger side steering wheel, GPS tracking, night and thermal vision on the front windshield.

The best part? The ‘Vapor’ actually features a custom stealth exhaust mode that allows you to drive the Challenger in complete silence. If that’s not enough to get you jumping out of your seat, the Vapor also carries an advanced computer system with remote control UAV-type access from anywhere in the world using the internet. The Vapor also comes with two custom flight helmets.

Both vehicles will be used during a marketing campaign by the U.S. Air Force to educate young people on the mechanical and technical career opportunities available within the Air Force.

We highly doubt this has anything to do with Chrysler since this Challenger Convertible has a strong resemblance to Dodge Challenger Convertible by Coach Builders that was seen at the 2008 SEMA Auto Show.

If you really want to transform your Challenger into a convertible, Coach Builders is taking orders starting at $16,000. That means you’ll end up be paying $58,000 if you want a drop-top 2009 Challenger Convertible SRT8.

German tuner KW Suspension has teamed up with Geiger Cars to unveil a new tuning package for the the 2009 Dodge Challenger SRT8. The package features a hydraulic handling package, 22-inch HRE wheels and Lamborghini-styled scissor doors.

The KW Challenger SRT8 features KW’s Hydraulic Lift System that allows drivers to lift and drop the car with a push of a button. Working with the KW’s coil-over struts the system provides improved handling and enhanced road feel. Other than that your sure to turn heads with the 22-inch HRE 995R model lightweight wheels and the Lamborghini scissor doors by LSD.

Performance upgrades for the KW Challenger SRT8 include a K&N intake system but KW plans on adding a Vortech supercharger system very soon.

Vizualtech, a Swedish car and boat design company, is known in the industry for their 3D renderings allowing clients to see their product in a full production version before it enters the manufacturing process.

It seems like that Vizualtech had some free time on their hands and decided to whip up some renderings of what a new Dodge Challenger will look like if it ever entered the Le Mans Series. Their version of the racing Dodge Challenger is decked out in FIA GT race specifications with numerous sponsor badging to give us the full affect.

Of course, with every automaker pulling out or cutting spending on the racing division of their business, we doubt that this Dodge Challenger GT will ever see the light of day.

Chrysler’s Red Letter Dodge recently ran an essay contest in which they asked Dodge Challenger owners: “How did the Challenger impact your life?” While the prize, a limited edition 2008 Challenger scale model and a Challenger SRT clock, didn’t seem too attractive, entries poured in with people saying that their Challenger has done everything from getting them into church to saving “my wife’s mental health.”

One member said that the new 2008 Dodge Challenger helped him attract more females. PNTYDRPR (which stands for Panty Dropper), said that the Challenger helped him start his own own company, attract women and prompted him to get his license plate changed to “PNTYDRPR.” We’re just wondering what type of business PNTYDRPR is in.

“If you work hard enough, nothing is out of reach, not even the Challenger,” he wrote.

Unfortunately the contest has ended but it’s interested seeing what people have submitted. Check out more posts here.

The Carbon Motors E7 Police Car Prototype is known as the “new brand of justice” scorning the Ford Crown Victoria and Dodge Charger Police Cars. Powered by a 3.0L diesel that makes 300-hp with a maximum torque of 420 lb-ft, the Carbon Motors E7 should help any cop protect and serve with power. Mated to a 6-speed automatic transmission the E7 goes from rest to 60 mph in 6.5 seconds with a top speed of 155 mph. And the good news is that the prototype is not just a prototype. Carbon Motors says the details and pricing on the E7 should be available in a few months.

Douglas Sonders, a well known and talented photographer had the privilege to photograph the car for Carbon Motors’ marketing material and he put together a little behind the scenes footage of his experience.

Sonders also had the chance to photograph the new Dodge Challenger Convertible by Coach Builders for RIDES Magazine.

If you happen to be a photography fan, check out Sonders site as well.

You can check out both videos after the jump.

The show must go on – While it may seem like that American automakers don’t have enough cash to even build another unit of any model in their lineup, they continue to flaunt future products. During the Rose Bowl on Friday, Chrysler LLC brought out its three new electric-drive vehicle prototypes along with the guru of Chrysler electric-vehicles, Lou Rhodes.

Besides showing off the three prototypes that Lour Rhodes says are retrofitted for production, Chrysler put the Dodge EV, a fully-electric sports car that is based on the Lotus Europa, against its Dodge Challenger SRT8 in a drag race. We won’t tell you who won just yet so check out the video after the jump.

Automotive News has previously reported that Chrysler and Lotus are in talks to produce an electric sports car based on the Elise.

Refresher:

Dodge EV: Two-passenger electric rear-wheel-drive sports car powered by a 268-hp electric motor and a lithium-ion battery. That allows for a 0 to 60 mph time of less than 5 seconds with a top speed of more than 120 mph. Chrysler says the Dodge EV can travel between 150 to 200 miles on a single charge.
Dodge Challenger SRT8: Power comes from a 6.1 liter HEMI V8 engine that produces 425 horsepower and 420 lb-ft of torque. 0–60 mph comes in at the 4.8 seconds with a top speed of 170 mph.

Follow the jump for the video.
