As American as The Star Spangled banner, the Dodge Challenger SRT8 392 Yellow Jacket edition aims to please and shock prospective muscle-car owners at this year’s LA Auto Show.

Okay, lets get a couple issues out of the way: a Brit wrote the national anthem, the Dodge is made in Canada and even though it shouts performance by way of including the displacement in the car’s name, it is no different mechanically than the SRT8 it will be competing with. It’s not all bad though even though it ‘only’ has the same 470 horses and 470 torques of the SRT8 Challenger, it is still good for a sub five second run to 60 and 117 ft back to zero.

“The Challenger SRT8 392 Yellow Jacket adds another piece of performance car nostalgia to our rear-drive muscle coupe lineup in 2012,” said Ralph Gilles, President and CEO – SRT Brand and Motorsports. “The Stinger Yellow paint and interior accents speak directly to the performance enthusiast who appreciates a memorable and collectible color that helps deliver even more excitement and exclusivity.”

This is where it gets tricky though: the manual transmission will get you 182 mph versus the auto’s ‘paltry’ 175. The auto though will run a mid-12 quarter though versus the manual’s high-12 quarter.

Despite the barn-door tech V8 and ludicrous ‘HEMI’ badges plastered all over the car, it packs a clever suspension system (for US standards) with two settings: Sport and Auto, sport naturally firming things up for better handling. This is good for up to 0.9 g on the skidpad, though I am not entirely sure how this a significant accomplishment, given that even the Jeep Grand Cherokee SRT8 or an Integra can pull this off, though I suppose it is appropriate for the given market.

For those using this car to commute or for fun driving, there are a couple features that will excite the nerd in all of us. Due to a super efficient amplifier, the car features a, 18-speaker, 900-watt Harmon-Kardon stereo along with a clever computer measuring 0-60 times, eighth mile times and quarter mile times. Handling g is also displayed.

The 2011 Specialty Equipment Market Association (SEMA) show in Las Vegas is right around the corner and Chrysler is expected to have a huge presence at the show. Mopar will showcase an outstanding 30 modified Ram, Dodge, Chrysler, Jeep, SRT and Fiat models at a 28,400 square-foot exhibit.

“The aftermarket is a $34 billion-a-year industry and SEMA is the perfect place to showcase everything that Mopar has to offer,” said Pietro Gorlier, President and CEO of Mopar, Chrysler Group LLC’s service parts and customer-care brand. “At Mopar, we believe in giving our customers a lot of choices when they go to personalize their vehicles. And that is why we offer extreme personalization for every single car in our showrooms. In addition to head-turning image vehicles at the SEMA show, we also will introduce new must-see product and technology.”

Check out the list of some of the vehicles after the jump.

Mopar image vehicles that will be on display at SEMA include:

Chrysler 300 SF6
Inspired by Chrysler 300 “Spring Festival” owners who participate in the Southern California owners’ gathering, the Mopar Underground Team designed the Chrysler 300 SF6 image vehicle with discrete styling and Mopar performance parts and accessories for the sixth-annual event.

Enhancing the “born-with-attitude” look of the Chrysler 300, the 300 SF6 is bolted with hardcore enthusiast hardware. Staggered 22-inch-by-9.5-inch and 22 inch-by-10.5-inch Savini Mono Di Forza SM3 aluminum wheels are wrapped with 265/35 R22 (front) and 295/30 R22 (rear) performance tires. For improved cornering and braking, this 300S model features a custom Mopar/KW coil-over-spring kit, front and rear strut-tower braces and larger SRT8® performance brakes.

A Mopar cold-air intake, custom Mopar long-tube headers, and Mopar/Corsa custom exhaust system combine to deliver even more performance from the legendary 5.7-liter HEMI® V-8 engine. The Chrysler 300S model’s black-accented headlamps and monotone Tungsten Metallic look provide a ready-for-the-streets appearance, while unique body-color grille, front-chin and trunk spoilers provide an even more aggressive touch. Topping off the unique look is a gloss black painted roof that accentuates the clean lines of the Chrysler flagship sedan.

The interior of the Chrysler 300 SF6 exudes an athletic-luxury theme with Mopar/Katzkin performance seats trimmed in black with black/blue perforated leather and Mopar blue accent stitching.

The use of Piano Black on interior center stack, instrument panel, steering wheel, gauge cluster and door-panel elements provide a uniquely lacquered and highly detailed appearance.

The Mopar audio by Kicker system in the Chrysler 300 SF6 features a dual 10-inch subwoofer enclosure mounted in the trunk; two, two-way speakers with domed tweeters mounted on the rear deck; 6-inch-by-9-inch midbass speakers mounted in each front door; and two 3.5-inch, two-way speakers with domed tweeters mounted in the left and right corners of the instrument panel.

Dodge Challenger SRT8 ACR
For the 2011 SEMA show, the Chrysler Group’s Mopar Underground team created a Challenger image vehicle with some cool ties to modern history. Influenced by the success of the Mopar Drag Pak Challenger and more recently, the Dodge Viper SRT10® ACR resetting the production car lap record at the Nürburgring Nordschleife track in Germany, Mopar Underground created the Dodge Challenger ACR based on the stellar Challenger SRT8 392. Some of Dodge’s and SRT’s best handling vehicles of all-time come with the ACR acronym attached to them, and the Challenger ACR is no different. The Challenger ACR is a no-frills homage to the original option-delete cars of the 1960s and 70s.

Equipped with Mopar parts, such as a coil-over suspension, front-and rear-strut tower braces, short-throw shifter, front splitter, cat-back exhaust, custom exhaust headers and a set of Goodyear F1 Supercar performance tires, the Challenger ACR is an animal that has as much bark as its cornering bite. Performance enhancements in the interior include carbon fiber door panels, front race bucket seats with openings for a racing harness and the rear seat is removed and replaced by a roll bar and fire extinguisher. An SRT three-spoke flat-bottom steering wheel, SRT gauge cluster, custom bright pedal kit, Mopar Drag Pack center stack and a carbon fiber center console finish off the interior modifications.

The exterior has design cues similar to those found on the Viper SRT10 ACR, including a white body, charcoal painted roof, carbon fiber hood, rear deck lid, rear spoiler and tail lamp surround and an offset flame red stripe that runs the length of the car. Red painted mirror caps and brake calipers, unique black painted five-spoke 20-inch alloy wheels and red “ACR” fender badging finish off the exterior design details. The white and red theme carries over to the interior with white accents on the carbon fiber door panels, red armrest bars with white foam padding, red door latch release tethers, red painted roll bars and red accents on the carbon fiber racing seats covered in black Katzkin leather.

Dodge Durango Tow Hook
Dodge will be turning heads at this year’s SEMA show with a special Dodge Durango Tow Hook image vehicle designed by Mopar Underground. The Tow Hook infuses a healthy dose of eye-catching style to the already-sporty Durango design. The vibrant four-coat orange and satin-black color scheme is executed both inside and out to make this Durango one of the most unique and exciting vehicles at the show.

The exterior features a muscle-car inspired four-coat orange paint scheme, with satin-black roof, fascia accents and hood graphics, along with blacked-out lighting and twin-spoke 22-inch-by- 9.5-inch forged Superalloy wheels wrapped in Pirelli tires. A custom mandrel bent exhaust system featuring Corsa components increases performance and belts out an unforgettable tone. To finish off the exterior, the Dodge Durango Tow Hook wears a piano black split-crosshair grille and has a 25 mm reduced ride-height for a more aggressive stance.

Tow Hook’s interior features carry over the theme from the exterior and uses high-quality Mopar components, such as Durango logo door sill guards, aluminum pedal kit and premium carpeted floor mats to add a strong sense of sport to the cabin. The black, perforated Mopar Katzkin leather seats feature orange leather trim on the tops of the seat bolsters and are decorated with orange stitching and piping. Perforated Barracuda suede covers the seat inserts, while smooth suede bolsters with orange accent stitching and piping make the seats pop. Orange leather trim, stitching and piping is found on the center front armrest as well. The door panels also feature orange stitching and silver metal brush trim that is shared on the dash just above the glove box. Finishing off the interior modifications are an SRT steering wheel, black chrome trim around the vents, and piano-white trimmed radio/HVAC and center console bezels.

Fiat 500 Titanium
Created for the performance enthusiast who wants a discretely “tuned” Fiat 500, the Mopar® Underground Team designed the Fiat 500 Titanium image vehicle with even more aggressive styling and premium sport-luxury details.

Below its Matte Titanium ‘whiskers and logo’ face, an aggressively sculpted front fascia is more pronounced and features large honeycomb grilles for maximum engine cooling. A satin black fascia insert with integrated LED fog lamps delivers a technical look. Above, circular projector headlamps are finished in gloss black to match the Fiat 500 Titanium’s exterior paint. From the side, 16 –inch-by- 6.5-inch Matte Titanium wheels feature a two-piece design. Custom Mopar lowering springs provide a lowered ride height and Matte Titanium front-and rear-brake calipers with larger rotors deliver improved stopping performance. Aggressively styled side skirts provide a more vertical profile and highlight the iconic curves of this performance Cinquecento. Matte Titanium exterior door handles and mirror caps add contrast to the deep-tinted glass. A large liftgate spoiler adds down force for improved stability at higher speeds, while a more aggressively styled rear fascia features a diffuser insert for improved aerodynamics. Additional exterior details on the Fiat 500 Titanium model include a Matte Titanium license plate brow and center-mounted trapezoidal exhaust tip. And to make sure the Fiat 500 Titanium delivers improved power, a Mopar cold-air intake and Mopar cat-back exhaust have been installed.

Inside, the Fiat 500 Titanium continues the athletic look with a black environment highlighted by Titanium Metallic accents. High-performance front seats are designed to be lightweight, and feature massive side bolsters and a racing-harness pass through for at-the-limit driving. Both front and rear seats are wrapped in smooth black leather and accented with Titanium Metallic vinyl seat centers. For added detail, all four seating positions feature a black leather center stripe with Metallic Gray accent stitching for a precise look. Titanium Metallic vinyl door bolsters feature accent stitching and pair with the Matte Titanium instrument panel and gauge cluster brow. Black floor mats with Titanium Metallic “500” logo and edge binding complete the look.

Fiat 500 Carbon
Adding even more style to the new 2012 Fiat 500 Sport, the Mopar® Underground Team designed the Fiat 500 Carbon image vehicle with Anodized Azzurro (blue) paint and unique blackened exterior and interior appointments – all designed to amplify the hatchback’s athletic Italian styling, craftsmanship, and nimble handling.

Enhancing the Fiat 500 Sport front fascia, the 500 Carbon integrates satin carbon fiber fog-lamp bezels and chin spoiler. For a more aggressive appearance, its signature ‘whiskers and logo’ face and circular projector headlamps are lacquered in Dark Hyper Black. Larger 17 –inch-by- 7-inch Dark Hyper Black aluminum wheels with wider 205/40 R 17 performance tires and exterior door handles are paired with satin carbon fiber mirror caps and tinted glass on the side profile. For greater cornering and performance, custom Mopar lowering springs, strut-tower brace and cold-air intake have been installed.

A more aggressive satin carbon fiber liftgate spoiler improves the Fiat 500 Carbon’s aerodynamic efficiency while adding down force for improved handling. Below, a powder-coated carbon fiber exhaust tip with Mopar cat-back exhaust provides an aggressive sound. Satin carbon fiber rear fascia bezels and valance provide additional detail, while a Dark Hyper Black license plate brow and tail lamp bezels continue the Fiat 500 Carbon’s serious look.

The interior of the Fiat 500 Carbon continues the blacked-out look and is highlighted by Anodized Azzurro accents. For a contemporary look, black leather sport seats feature embossed fabric with a textured geometric pattern in the seat centers. Azzurro accent piping on the seats, accent stitching on the sport-steering wheel and binding on the floor mats are color-matched to the Anodized Azzurro instrument panel bezel. Black chrome replaces traditional chrome on the Fiat 500 Carbon’s interior accents, while a carbon fiber instrument panel accents and shift knob provide added detail.

Ram 392 Quick Silver
The Ram 392 Quick Silver began life as a 2011 Ram R/T. A 470 horsepower, 392 HEMI V-8 from the SRT lineup was dropped in and mated to the R/T’s 4.10 gear set and a high-stall converter. For additional performance, the Ram 392 is equipped with a cold-air intake kit and headers featuring an electronic exhaust cutout for maximum power and sound at the track.

For normal driving, a cat-back dual exhaust system intensifies the HEMI rumble. To improve braking performance, discs and calipers are replaced with a Brembo big brake kit, featuring 15-inch vented rotors and bright silver six-piston calipers in the front and rear. With the exception of a gloss black roof, the body is finished in a three-stage bright silver while the wheels, grille inserts, mirrors and select interior trim components are coated in anodized red paint.

A Mopar Underground, reverse deep-cowl aluminum hood design with functional heat extractors is inspired by the new Dodge Charger SRT8 and smoked lenses cover all exterior lighting. The Ram 392 Quick Silver is lowered 2 inches with the help of a custom suspension kit. The “slammed” look is made more evident by a Mopar body kit, consisting of sill and box pieces, finished up with a chin spoiler.

Mopar Underground added their 22-inch wheels wrapped in 275/45R22 tires up front and 305/40R22 tires in the rear. A Mopar hard tonneau cover with a unique integrated spoiler redirects the air for additional down force at high speeds and Mopar’s Bed Rug protects the paint. The interior features high-bolster SRT seats covered in Katzkin leather with red stitching and accents to match the steering wheel, instrument panel and Laramie Longhorn inspired leather shift knob, door panels and center console trim.

A set of Mopar Pedals and door sills are installed giving the interior an additional splash of functional aesthetics. Music is blasted through Kicker speakers, including tweeters in the instrument panel, mids in the doors and in the back, and woofers in the doors leaving plenty of room for gear behind the seats. Simply put, the Ram 392 Quick Silver is designed to be a truck that would appropriately share a garage with a Dodge Viper.

Mopar performance parts and accessories on the Ram 392 Quick Silver include:

Ralph Gilles could be one of the coolest executives currently in the automobile industry. If you don’t know who this man is, he’s the CEO of Dodge’s and Chrysler’s SRT brand.

From interviews, to press conferences, Gilles always appears to be very enthusiastic, passionate and just overall plain interesting whenever he discusses the products that he’s in charge of.

So that’s why we suggest you take a quick look at a YouTube video that has Gilles promoting the brand he’s now in charge of.

“The auto industry has taken a battering during the past few years,” said David Sargent, vice president of global vehicle research at J.D. Power and Associates. “However, it is clear that throughout this period, automakers have never lost sight of the fact that survival—and ultimately success—only comes from winning over customers in the showroom. Offering highly appealing vehicles is one of the primary means to succeed.”

Hit the jump for the complete ranking.

In recent years, muscle car fans are having the time of their lives while they kick back and watch the Big 3 go at an outstanding horsepower war. Of course Dodge, unlike Ford and Chevrolet, has refrained from offering anything north of 550-hp… until now.

Sources inside Dodge say that the newly-formed SRT brand is working on a factory option supercharger for the new Dodge Charger and Dodge Challenger that will boost output from the 6.4 liter HEMI V8 to as high as 570-hp.

Click here for more news on the Dodge Charger.

Insiders says that the twin-screw supercharger kit will be available for order as a factory part sometime in late 2012 for the 2013 model year Challenger and Charger.

Click here for more news on the Dodge Challenger.

Refresher: Power for the 2012 Dodge Charger SRT8 comes from a 6.4 liter HEMI V8 making 470-hp and 470 lb-ft of torque - 45 more horsepower and 50 more lb-ft of torque than the outgoing model. Mated to a 5-speed automatic transmission with paddle shifters as standard, the 2012 Charger SRT8 goes from 0 to 60 mph in the high 4 second range with a top speed of 175 mph. It can run the quarter mile in the high 12-second range. Prices start at $46,660.

Today is the 4th of July and we’ll be taking a break from the normal heavy Monday news day. Like many of you who are not always pumping out news 24 hours a day, we’ll be taking a break and kicking back with our friends and family – don’t worry though, we’ll still be checking in here and there and bringing you some new stuff to look at. In the mean time, Chris Chin, our Senior Editor, has gone above and beyond to put together a little tribute to the American auto industry in his new editorial. So without further ado – Happy Independence and here is Chris Chin…

The Passion Still Revs On

After watching the latest episode of Top Gear, Jeremy Clarkson’s 50th birthday tribute to one of the greatest motoring icons in the world, the Jaguar E-Type, the segment has me wanting one more than ever. I’m thinking, a Series I with the legendary 4.2L straight-six. So I sit here in my living room prowling eBay Motors, trying to get a grasp of how many body parts I would have to sell to make one mine. Now I admit, I am very biased towards foreign manufacturers, particularly favoring the Europeans. Although I do adore them, I also have a soft spot for some of America’s offerings—current and past—though mostly past because our generation’s General Motors, Chrysler and Ford groups haven’t really experienced a truly shining moment like Britain had with the E-Type. I am one to give respect where respect is due. Looking back through automotive history, America used to be world-renown and very respected. Shamefully though, much of the same cannot be said for the “Big Three” within the last 20 years so, at least until now—somewhat. Because Jeremy Clarkson took the opportunity to reflect on the importance of Britain’s greatest motoring icon, I have decided to give the same due diligence for America and reflect on what has been achieved post-bailout. I start with a time when we weren’t as prosperous as the latter.

The abysmal collapse of the American automobile industry a few years ago had me thinking. Combined with the knowledge about the British automobile industry that I acquired through being an avid Top Gear follower, I’ve come to a simple conclusion: the reasons for the fall of the American automobile industry share similarities to the explanation that put the British automobile industry on the deathbed back in the 1970s and 1980s. The fall of Chrysler and General Motors was our country’s and our own generation’s version of British Leyland. And I’ll tell you why.

For those of you who don’t know what British Leyland is, here is a little bit of a history lesson. It was perhaps the largest automobile corporation in British history. And if you thought Chrysler and General Motors had a multitude of brands back in the day, British Leyland was composed of nearly 100 individual companies alone. Morris, Austin, MINI, Jaguar, Land Rover, Rover, MG, Triumph; and that is just the tip of the iceberg. British Leyland showed the world that Britain was a strong and industrious nation; much like the US of A was at the same time. Our automobile industries were the beating hearts of our nations with a workforce. But then, tragedy struck.

The 1973 Oil Crisis, problems with the unionized workforce, high inflation and poor management left British Leyland in shackles. This seriously left their cars hopelessly engineered. I am sure almost 99% of you have heard of someone who has owned a British vehicle from the last 50 years and have said nothing good about them. Once British Leyland finally died in 1986, only a small handful of BL remained still somewhat intact. Out of the 100 companies that made up BL, only MINI, Jaguar, Land Rover, and MG still make cars today, all of which make up the Rover Group (all of which have separate owners today). This excludes Ford UK, Vauxhall, Aston Martin, Bentley, Rolls-Royce etc. But the point is, that’s a big difference.

While even the three famed hosts of Top Gear too recognize that many of the cars conceived from the late British corporate behemoth were absolutely terrible, they still have pride in the fact that it was made in England. I’m sure all of you readers who commonly watch the plucky motoring show can remember a time when they paid homage to the history of the British automobile industry. They were even pioneers in many aspects inventing such designs as all-wheel drive. They practically invented the lightweight roadster.

…while the plucky Brits across the Atlantic invented the lightweight roadster, we invented the muscle car.

Can you see the correlation? America’s automobile industry was just as constructive as British Leyland and equally a pioneer. Going back as far as Packard, Nash, Studebaker, to the usual Ford, GM, Dodge and their subsidiary brands. America was once seen as the world leader in producing automobiles and under those pretenses, we were proud that they were made in America. For example, General Motors invented the automatic transmission. Cadillac was the first ever to introduce night vision. Chevrolet was the first to introduce heads-up displays. The list goes on. Most of all, while the plucky Brits across the Atlantic invented the lightweight roadster, we invented the muscle car. Yeah baby. Again the list goes on and on: the Chevrolet Corvette, Camaro, Ford Mustang, and the Dodge Charger.

For nearly the same reasons that British Leyland took a hit in the 1970s, we had Chrysler and General Motors fall into bankruptcy with Ford barely surviving in our own generation. Poorly structured management, troubled unions, awful and unappealing cars that were also not terribly reliable, and the growth of foreign manufacturers and rough competition all led to the demise of British’s automobile industry. The story for the Big Three—especially with the two they hit hardest: Chrysler and GM—is not much different from theirs. We’ve just had a slightly better result.

But as the feces hit the fan, our infamous President Barak Obama bailed out the American automobile industry and both Chrysler and GM were downsized and restructured. General Motors is now doing better than ever with Chrysler and Ford putting out an equal effort just as Britain’s automobile industry is beginning to flourish as well.

Now, I will concede the fact that unlike British Leyland, the American automobile industry isn’t permanently in the grave. But we have lost some signature nameplates like Pontiac and Oldsmobile. The same can be said for some British nameplates too. Additionally, just as British cars are still struggling with reliability issues and some build quality issues, the Americans might equally be lacking in both of the latter and driving experiences as well. Specifically, America’s auto industry is still up for some big competition when compared to the foreign offerings. But as much as the British have made a mockery of the myriad of automotive disasters that came from Detroit, much of the same could be said about the British. Despite the pissing contest though, Britain’s auto industry is as productive as they once were at their height. For example, we’ve reported before on the expansion of McLaren Automotive (creators of the McLaren F1 and the MP4-12C), Lotus, and Vauxhall. Not to mention, Jaguars and Land Rovers are more popular than ever before. The Americans can share an equal if not better sense accomplishment. It’s one that, for the most part, shines with the credentials of bright stars and the red, white, and blue. Anyone who has seen Cadillac’s new CTS-V, new Jeep Grand Cherokee, or Ford Explorer knows what I’m on about. Even the lesser vehicles, like the Chevrolet Cruze, Ford Focus and even the new Malibu are turning out to be quite appealing.

…the turn-around of the American automobile industry can again give the enthusiasts in this country something to be proud of

The fact of the matter is that yes we recognize the faults of the American auto industry just as much as the British take accountability for theirs. I can’t think of one reason why I would want to drive a 1990s Chevrolet Malibu other than off of a cliff—in fact, I wouldn’t even want to be seen in one. And Jeremy Clarkson has taught us well, never to buy an Austin Maxi or a Morris Marina because they were as good at being cars as Keanu Reeves is to acting. However, ven through the dreariest days of both industries, they still hinted that there was a weak but beating heart of passion still left. Both nations wanted to stand strong behind the products of their nation. For the British, they have icons like the Jaguar E-Type, the Range Rover. On the opposite side with models that received more criticism than acclaim, they had the hideously styled Aston Martin Lagonda. It represented steps forward with its radical styling and complicated interior electronics—that never worked. Even then the British still stood by their passion. We here in the US of A have a similar instance: the 1990s Chevrolet Impala SS. Sure, it has the reputation that the majority of the people who drive them are either rednecks or pimps. With its intimidating police car Caprice-based body-on-frame, included police package (heavy duty equipment such as a beefed suspension, steering and brakes) and the Corvette’s famous 5.7L 350 small-block V8 driving the rear-wheels, the Impala SS was the Cadillac CTS-V of its day.

Either way you look at it, the turn-around of the American automobile industry can again give the enthusiasts in this country something to be proud of. Just like the collapse of Britain’s auto industry, the American automobile industry had its serious downs and even experienced death. However, both industries were resuscitated and are alive and well today. For those reasons, we should equally celebrate—in light of America’s 235th birthday—the valiantly vast improvements of the American auto industry after being at an all-time low. Just as Jeremy Clarkson preached the significance of the Jaguar E-Type to automotive history and how the British public shouldn’t have overlooked it, the latest efforts and offerings from Detroit’s own iron should reinvigorate our appreciation and pride in America’s iron.

I can finally look at a Cadillac, a Chrysler, a Dodge, a Ford, or a Chevy and boast that they were made in America.

Of course, both the US and the UK have a long way to go politically and economically before everything gets settled. Even with plenty of room for improvement on their cars, they are very much on the right paths. Simply put, I feel that our automobile industry is in good hands with the new bright minds that are standing behind Detroit’s Big Three. Because some of the radical betterment exemplified by Chrysler, General Motors, and Ford, it appears that the bean counters finally got their heads out of their asses—or even got their titles as heads removed—and decided to listen to the demand of the public. I sense the passion still exists in our automobile industry, I actually crave some American muscle these days. I can finally look at a Cadillac, a Chrysler, a Dodge, a Ford, or a Chevy and boast that they were made in America. We all should, because we’re America.

As egmCarTech previously reported, May brought in some considerably low sales numbers for alternative-fuel vehicles, despite steadily climbing gas prices. Not only did conventionally powered cars outsell them, but American muscles cars saw better numbers, as well.

The Chevorlet Camaro, which brought in the highest numbers of all the American muscle in May, the Ford Mustang and the Dodge Challenger together sold over 1,600 more units than all of the fuel-efficient vehicles combined.

Aside from high gas prices, much of these numbers have to do with the disaster in Japan. With the most popular hybrids being produced in the same place that has seen repeated tragedy, sales were much lower than normal.

Additionally, the increasing fuel-efficiency of the American muscle cars can be factored into the odd sales change. Of course, the V-8 versions won’t be stretching your dollar at the pump, but V-6 versions offer an improvement in that respect. Getting 300-hp while also getting 30 mpg defiantly has its appeal, and the Ford Mustang is the first to do it in their V6 version.

So will June sales continue in this fashion? I’m curious to know how many readers would pass up a pump-friendly hybrid for V-6 muscle with a slightly improved mpg?

Press Release:

2011 Dodge Challengers Are Becoming Even More the Envy of the Muscle Car Market

Green with Envy Launches on Challenger R/T Classic and SRT8® 392 Models

February 9, 2011 , Chicago -The expanding muscle car market is going to be “Green With Envy” as the Dodge brand today announced a first-time, limited production run of the 2011 Dodge Challenger R/T Classic and SRT8® 392 models featuring Green With Envy exterior color.

Both Dodge Challenger models are improved for 2011 and deliver more of what American muscle-car enthusiasts want — unmistakable design, powerful HEMI® V-8 engines with new technologies and world-class handling and braking. Executed with quality and precision, the two new Challenger Green With Envy models provide an extra dose of exclusivity.

Production of the 2011 Green With Envy Challenger models will start in February 2011 at the Brampton Assembly plant in Brampton, Ontario, Canada. Challenger SRT8 Green With Envy models are available for ordering now at Dodge dealerships, while orders for the Challenger R/T Classic models will begin in late first quarter, 2011.

2011 DODGE CHALLENGER R/T CLASSIC
Upgraded for the performance enthusiast, the new 2011 Dodge Challenger R/T Classic includes a new performance-tuned suspension with rail-like handling, more power from the 5.7-liter HEMI V-8 and more standard equipment.

The limited edition Green With Envy model features two A-line body-side stripes – either in matte black (standard) or white (optional). New five-spoke, cast-aluminum wheels are styled in the spirit of nostalgic Halibrand or “Kidney Bean” style with a modern interpretation. On the interior, the premium Dark Slate Nappa leather seats and center console feature Green With Envy accent stitching.

The legendary 5.7-liter HEMI V-8 engine adds a new cold-air induction system for 375 track-tearing horsepower (with standard Tremec six-speed manual transmission) and 372 horsepower (with optional five-speed Auto Stick transmission). Fuel Saver technology on the automatic transmission seamlessly transitions to high-fuel-economy four-cylinder mode when less power is needed and V-8 mode when more power is in demand. This optimizes fuel economy when full V-8 power is not required, without sacrificing vehicle performance or capability.

The EPA fuel economy, miles per gallon rating is 16/25 (city/hwy) for both the automatic transmission and manual transmission models.

Other standard equipment on the new 2011 Dodge Challenger R/T Classic package includes “Challenger” fender badges in classic script, classic “egg-crate grille” with heritage “R/T” badge, functional hood scoops, high-intensity discharge headlamps (HID), heated front seats and six Boston Acoustics premium speakers with 276-watt amplifier. The standard Super Track Pak Group adds a high-performance steering gear, high-performance brake linings, high-performance tuned monotube-shock absorbers, P245/45R20 Goodyear Eagle F1 Super Car three-season tires and three-mode ESC with “full off.”

The Manufacturer’s Suggested Retail Price (MSRP) for the 2011 Dodge Challenger R/T Classic Green With Envy, is $ 35,785 (includes $825 destination).

2011 DODGE CHALLENGER SRT8
This new and exclusive Green With Envy paint scheme joins the return of the legendary 392-cubic inch HEMI powertrain under the hood in the 2011 Dodge Challenger SRT8 392.

In addition to the unique exterior, dual, full-body black stripes and 20-inch, five-spoke SRT-exclusive wheels with polished face and satin black painted pockets are standard. The race-inspired interior of the Challenger SRT8 392 features standard SRT-branded seats in Dark Slate Nappa Leather with Green With Envy accent bands in front and rear.

Pumping out 470 horsepower and 470 lb.-ft. of torque, the newest HEMI engine in the SRT product lineup provides an additional 90 lb.-ft. of torque at 2,900 rpm compared with the previous 6.1-liter V-8 engine.

The added torque allows for inspired standing starts and improved straight-line performance while new, performance-tuned motor mounts improve idle stability and ride control at any speed. An active intake manifold and high-lift camshaft with cam phasing provides maximum low-end torque while optimizing high-end power.

New for 2011 is the Fuel Saver technology (four-cylinder mode) in automatic transmission equipped models, which allows the engine to operate economically on four cylinders or use all eight cylinders when needed.

The 2011 Dodge Challenger SRT8 gets 14/22 (city/hwy) miles per gallon (mpg) with the automatic transmission model (a 15 percent increase on highway versus 2010 model) and 14/23 mpg with the manual-transmission (a 4 percent increase on highway versus 2010).

The MSRP for the 2011 Dodge Challenger SRT8 392 featuring Green With Envy is $44,875 (includes $825 destination).

The 2011 Dodge Challenger SRT8 is also now available in four additional exterior colors, including Billett Metallic Clear Coat, Brilliant Black Crystal Pearl Coat, Redline 3 Pearl Coat and Toxic Orange Pearl Coat.

Dodge’s current halo car, the Challenger, follows the trend of new power and drivetrains as well as reworked suspension, interior and exterior upgrades. When it first came out, immediately Dodge had something going for them. It was one of the rare cases where revitalizing the past has somewhat worked. The Challenger rings every petrolhead’s memories and imaginations because it’s a modern representation of what made American motoring so great back in the glory days of leaded fuel, long hoods, big engines and loud exhausts. But it fell short of the competition with a lackluster interior and boring road mannerisms and really, it was nothing more than a Charger in a more handsome suit with two of its doors cut off. Hopefully, the new updates will make the Challenger a better competitor amongst the blasts from the past, the Mustang and the new Camaro.

The Challenger receives almost the same suspension retuning to allow for a 0.90g skidpad rating and more compliant handling. Additionally, the brakes also received some work offering better response and feel. Amongst a bucket list of improvements, the Challenger also receives a completely new variable electro-hydraulic power steering system that Dodge says will offer far better feel and on-center tracking. According to the Mopar company, the system monitors in steering angle, vehicle and engine speed, and the chassis control systems 13 times a second, and adjusts the steering effort accordingly, allowing for a fully active system.

Dodge offers three different suspension-tuning packages with equally differing wheel and tire combinations.

In light of the new V6 muscle car wars, the new Pentastar V6, just like nearly every other model, also finds its way into the base model of the Challenger. Because it’s a completely new engine, making it lighter than the outgoing V6, the Challenger receives a near 50/50 weight distribution for the V6 model (52.4/47.6 front/rear to be specific). The 3.6L Pentastar V6 ends up giving the 2011 Challenger SE a whopping 306-hp and 268 lb-ft of torque. The 5.7L HEMI virtually remains unchanged and is mated to a new Tremec TR6060 six-speed manual that has been slightly reworked, offering more refined actions. It offer 376-hp and 410 lb-ft of torque.

Of course, the big news for the 2011 Dodge Challenger is the 2011 SRT8, which gets a 392-cubic inch HEMI V8 making 470-hp and 470 lb-ft. of torque, an extra 90 lb-ft of torque at 2,900 rpm versus the previous 6.1L V8 engine. The 2011 Dodge Challenger SRT8 is available standard with a 5-speed automatic transmission with Auto Stick or an optional Tremec TR-6060 6-speed manual transmission. The combination allows the Dodge Challenger SRT8 392 to go from 0-60 mph in the high 4-second range.

2011 Dodge Challenger in Action:

Visually, the Challenger maintains its unique, muscle-car styling with some minor tweaking. On the inside, Dodge employs its Design for Six Sigma method, improving the levels of refinement and precision to world-class levels…whatever that is.

Either way, Dodge hopefully realizes that it cannot succeed in this world making subpar products. And after the entire run-through I’ve written up for these updated Mopars, seems like they caught that drift… at least on paper. How will it all stack up in the real world? Only time will tell.

Chrysler is putting a lot behind its Dodge brand of trucks to help bolster U.S. sales by as much as 45% in 2011. Dodge sales have increased over the past year, but 40% of those sales were to corporate, government, and rental customers The new models are designed with the retail customer in mind.

“We have nameplates that are still romantically powerful,” Ralph Gilles, head of the Dodge brand said. “If you take those names, take care of them, market them, improve them, they will do well.”

The new Dodge lineup will include the Avenger sedan, Grand Caravan minivan, Journey SUV, and Challenger muscle car, and Durango truck. The changes will include some complete redesigns (Challenger and Durango), and some mid-cycle modifications. The company also plans to get back into the leasing business in a big way, as resale values are expected to improve. This year Chrysler”s lease rate was 11%, versus an industry average of 21%.

Stay tuned later today as we bring you live photos of Dodge’s 2011 lineup from the 2010 LA Auto Show.

The Dodge Challenger is one of the most successful muscle cars of all time and for the 2011 model year, it has become even more impressive with a 392-cubic inch HEMI V8 making 470-hp engine. However, Chrysler fans are still eager to see the return of the Plymouth Barracuda, a muscle car that roamed planet Earth before the Challenger.

According to Chrysler design chief and boss Ralph Gilles, the Auburn Hills automaker is seriously thinking of reviving the Barracuda.

“There’s a lot of pressure on us to bring the ‘Cuda back,” Gilles said at the 2010 SEMA Show last week. “The customers have been stomping their feet for it.”

There’s only one problem – Plymouth doesn’t exist anymore. If the Barracuda is ever revived the model may become Dodge or Chrysler, just as the Plymouth PT Cruiser became a Chrysler after the brand was killed.
