Many are worried how much say the U.S. government will have in future General Motors’ products since it will be a major shareholder of the new restructured company. Speaking at the Automotive Press Association luncheon, Bob Lutz confirmed that GM will still be making vehicles like the 2010 Chevrolet Camaro, Corvettes and full-size pickup trucks alongside the Chevy Volt and future hybrid models.

Lutz said that the new GM will ditch a lot of huge baggage and will emerge as a “smaller but leaner” company that will remain “a powerhouse” that is very profitable.

Lutz said that production of all the Chevrolet Volt-type vehicles, including the Opel Ampera, will take place in Michigan.

So hopefully, if GM files for bankruptcy on Monday, the Chevrolet Camaro Convertible and the Cadillac CTS Coupe will still make it to the market. Speaking of the CTS Coupe, Lutz said that the car had even impressed Obama’s auto task force. He said the auto task force members were asking when the CTS Coupe is going on sale and how much it would cost.

According to Mark McNabb, vice president of Cadillac-Hummer-Saab sales channel, the new Cadillac CTS family shows what Cadillac wants to do with its car lineup – offer more derivatives of each model.

“Look at a CTS and I think you can start understanding where we are going. Look at a CTS [sedan], CTS wagon, CTS coupe — obviously, derivatives off of a platform make a lot of sense from a financial perspective,” McNabb told Automotive News.

The 2010 Cadillac CTS Sport Wagon is on its way for this fall while the CTS Coupe is due out in the fall of 2010.

McNaab said that Cadillac will redesign the STS early next decade and will offer a small car positioned below the CTS. He said that the move of offering more derivatives will help Cadillac “compete in a greater portion of the marketplace.”

Originally, the 2010 Cadillac CTS Coupe was scheduled to make its production debut at the 2008 LA Auto Show. However, General Motors decided to push back the launch and rumor had it that the production CTS Coupe will show face at the 2009 Detroit Auto Show – but the much anticipated Caddy was a no show in Detroit as well.

Well, our friend Donny at Fast Lane Daily was doing some hardcore reading of General Motors Viability Plan checking out all the detailed graphs and statistics when he came across a photo of the production 2010 Cadillac CTS Coupe.

In its viability plan that was submitted to the U.S. Treasury earlier today, GM said that the Cadillac CTS Coupe will start production in 2010 with sales to begin later that summer. Power will come from the same 3.6L V6 options found under the hood of the CTS sedan.

The 2010 Cadillac CTS Coupe was originally scheduled to makes its world premiere at the 2008 LA Auto Show. However, low on cash at the time General Motors decided to cancel the debut along with the world debut of the 2010 Buick LaCrosse.

Well, the General now has access to some government bailout money and will bring both cars to the 2009 Detroit Auto Show next month. Sources say that there will be little change from the CTS Coupe Concept we saw at the 2008 Detroit Auto Show earlier this year.

Insiders say that a CTS-V Coupe is under discussion. Power will come from the CTS-V Sedan’s 556-hp V8. However, we’re guessing executives may cancel or delay the model due to a shift in focus to smaller and fuel-efficient cars. We’ll try to find some details for you at the 2009 Detroit Auto Show.

The General said that it is still planning to reveal about 15 vehicles in the U.S. alone within the next two years – most notably the Chevrolet Volt.

Speaking of the Chevrolet Volt, GM said it will increase investment for the launch of the plug-in hybrid which will hit markets by Nov. 2010. Still on their way are the Cadillac CTS Sport Wagon, SRX crossover and the Cadillac CTS Coupe. The CTS Coupe and the 2010 Buick LaCrosse were supposed to make their debut at the 2008 LA Auto Show later this month but have been delayed. GM did not say whether the two will make their debut at the 2009 Detroit Auto Show in January.

The Chevrolet Camaro will still be available for delivery early 2009 followed by the Equinox crossover in late-2009 with the Cruze delayed until late 2010. Saab’s 9-4X crossover is also on its way in 2010.

GM said today that it will be delaying the world premieres of the new Buick LaCrosse and Cadillac CTS Coupe. GM will now unveil the new Buick LaCrosse at the 2009 Detroit Auto Show but no confirmation has been made for the CTS Coupe.

The moves, according to GM, were made to reduce costs. We’ll let you believe that one if you want to but we’re pretty disappointed since we were looking forward to seeing the two models in LA.

Nonetheless, make sure you join us on Nov. 19th as we kick off live coverage of the 2008 LA Auto Show.

While GM is trying to come up with $15 billion dollars to increase its liquidity, it has no plans to stop introducing new models in segments where it matters. Of the seven new models planned, the Chevrolet Cruze and the Cadillac CTS variants are being seen as the most important.

The seven models include the upcoming Cadillac CTS coupe and wagon, Cadillac SRX, Buick Invicta, Saab 9-4X, the redesigned Chevrolet Equinox and the global-compact Chevrolet Cruze. And while the Buick Invicta may be a beautiful looking sedan and the SRX and 9-4X will be much anticipated compact SUVs, the Cruze and the CTS coupe are seen as the saviors of this group.

The Chevrolet Cruze is obviously critical since it will flaunt its fuel-economy. Not to mention it’ll be a ‘world car’ that GM plans on selling in very profitable markets. Most importantly, the Chevrolet Cruze is expected to be the answer to whether or not GM can build a solid and quality compact car.

The Cadillac CTS Coupe will give GM more ground to compete with the BMW 3-Series Coupe and the Infiniti G37. Cadillac is considered the only brand where GM can sell models at a high-price with high margins – which is very important due to the slowdown of the pickups and SUVs.
