Under Fiat SpA, Chrysler has dismantled a team of engineers dedicated to developing a range of electric-vehicles. The move marks a major reversal for Chrysler, which had used its ENVI department and its electric-car program in order to receive $12.5 billion in federal aid.

In August, Chrysler took a $70 million grant from the U.S. Department of Energy to develop and test a fleet of 220 hybrid pickups and minivans that are now scrapped from its turnaround plan that CEO Sergio Marchionne announced earlier this week. Spokesman Nick Cappa said that on Friday, Chrysler had disbanded ENVI for a more traditional organization.

“Envi is absorbed into the normal vehicle development program,” Cappa told Reuters.

Under the new plan presented by Marchionne, ENVI’s chief Lou Rhodes will become the executive in charge of developing electric-cars for both Fiat and Chrysler.

Originally, Chrysler had plans to launch its first electric-vehicles by 2010. It had pledged to have 500,000 electric-cars on the road by 2013.

There has been a huge buzz recently around electric-vehicles and lithium-ion battery development; however, one automaker ,who was once a key player on the segment, has gone missing – Chrysler Group LLC. Last we heard, Chrysler and its ENVI department had planned to have an electric-car in the showrooms by the end of 2010.

Even during its stay in bankruptcy court, Chrysler submitted three proposals to the U.S. Department of Energy, outlining a $448 million plan to “rapidly bring” electric-vehicles and plug-in hybrids to the market. Following that we heard reports that the once cancelled Lotus Europa-based Dodge Circuit was back in Chrysler’s product plans. In fact, Chrysler had three other electric vehicles that were planned for 2013.

However, today, it’s unclear whether new CEO Sergio Marchionne remains committed to Chrysler’s ENVI electric-vehicle initiatives. Not to mention that Fiat, like other European auto companies, is a big fan of diesels rather than hybrids or electric-cars.

“Chrysler really isn’t in the game at the moment, at least not near enough for us to expect something in showrooms in 12 to 18 months,” Stephanie Brinley of AutoPacific Group.

Despite still being in bankruptcy court, Chrysler announced yesterday that it has submitted three proposals to the U.S. Department of Energy that outlines a $448 million plan to “rapidly bring” electric-vehicles and plug-in hybrids to the market.

The plan represents a 50/50 cost-share opportunity where Chrysler LLC and its partners (meaning Fiat SpA) will invest $224 million combined with a DOE matching that with the same number.

“If approved, Chrysler LLC plans to use funds to build a demonstration fleet of PHEVs and EVs, as well as create a new-vehicle electrification technology and manufacturing center located in Michigan.” Chrysler said in statement.

The Auburn Hills automaker said that it will use “as much as $83 million to build a new vehicle electrification technology and manufacturing center in Michigan.” That new facility will be responsible for development, testing, manufacturing electric-drive components and the final assembly of EVs and range-extended-vehicles. Chrysler says that the facility will be functional by 2010 and will produce more than 20,000 units per year.

So what EVs and PHEVs does Chrysler have in mind? Proposed models include a Dodge Ram 1500 plug-in hybrid, a Chrysler Town & Country plug-in hybrid and a fully electric Chrysler Town & Country. Chrysler said that it will also provide the U.S. Postal Service with a fleet of 165 Chrysler Town & Country EV minivans for daily mail service in four regions throughout the United States.

“To ensure a robust assessment, Chrysler will demonstrate 100 Chrysler Town & Country PHEV minivans and 100 Dodge Ram PHEV pickup trucks across a range of drive cycles and consumer-usage patterns in diverse geographies and climates throughout the United States,” Chrysler said.

No word on a production version of the Dodge Circuit or the Chrysler 200C EV so for anyone expecting something exciting out of this plan – don’t get your hopes up.

Nonetheless, at least you can say they’re being ambitious and positive while going through bankruptcy.

Chrysler LLC applied for two initiatives established by the DOE-the Electric Drive Vehicle Battery and Component Manufacturing Initiative and the Transportation Electrification Initiative. Both are designed to speed up development, demonstration, evaluation and manufacturing of EVs and PHEVs. The programs represent a 50/50 cost-share opportunity with $224 million from Chrysler LLC and its partners, combined with a matching $224 million from the DOE. These funds will accelerate the market introduction and penetration of advanced powertrains.

The proposal will enable the production of commercially viable products in a shorter time frame. Combined, Chrysler LLC’s proposal will stimulate the economy and help the company achieve its leadership goals in electrified-vehicle development and production.

The Transportation Electrification Initiative
Chrysler LLC’s $365-million submission for the Transportation Electrification Initiative intends to establish a nationwide demonstration fleet of more than 365 test-fleet vehicles for use by select customers and partners. The Chrysler Town & Country and Dodge Ram 1500 are popular models in their respective segments and as PHEVs can achieve substantial greenhouse-gas reduction. To ensure a robust assessment, Chrysler will demonstrate 100 Chrysler Town & Country PHEV minivans and 100 Dodge Ram PHEV pickup trucks across a range of drive cycles and consumer-usage patterns in diverse geographies and climates throughout the United States. The company has established more than a dozen partnerships with city and local governments, research and development authorities, utility companies and universities to test the PHEVs.

In addition, through a partnership between Chrysler LLC’s ENVI group and the U.S. Postal Service (USPS), Chrysler LLC will deliver 165 Chrysler Town & Country EV cargo minivans for daily mail service in four regions throughout the country. Last month, ENVI, Chrysler LLC’s in-house electric vehicle organization, made multiple announcements aimed at accelerating the market introduction of electric-drive vehicles. With Chrysler going through bankruptcy and giving majority control over to Italian automaker Fiat, it’s a bit unclear where the Auburn Hills automaker’s ENVI electric-vehicle division stands. Recent reports said that the bankruptcy judge or Fiat may decide to kill ENVI completely since it may be too costly.

ENVI was scheduled to deliver its first electric-vehicle in late 2010 with lithium-ion battery packs supplied by A123Systems. The division had created a total of five vehicle concepts but never confirmed which of those five concepts would make it into production. However, last month CNNMoney said that Chrysler’s first production ENVI would be the Lotus Europa based Dodge Circuit.

While that may have gotten many of you excited, a report by AutoCar released today said that the car has been killed.

“The Europa-based Dodge Circuit electric car has been killed by the credit crunch,” reports AutoCar.

Nonetheless, insiders say that Lotus is now talking to European OEM to setup another electric-car program like the Tesla Roadster.

The Dodge Circuit EV is (or was) a pure electric-car that carries a 268-hp electric-motor allowing it to travel 150 miles to 200 miles on a single charge. 0 to 60 comes in under 5 seconds with a top speed of 120 mph.

So what’s going to happen to Chrysler’s ENVI division and their never-ending lineup of electric-vehicle concepts now that the Auburn Hills automaker has filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy? According to a report by earth2tech, now that Fiat will eventually own 35 percent of Chrysler, the company’s ENVI division and its partnership with battery maker A123Systems are up in the air.

Chrysler announced earlier this year that it has partnered with A123Systems to provide advanced Nonophosphate Lithium-ion prismatic battery-cells for its plug-in electric-vehicles. The ENVI lineup, which consists of concepts such as the Dodge Circuit EV, Jeep Wrangler EV, Jeep Patriot EV, Chrysler Town & Country EV and the Chrysler 200C EV, was expected to introduce its first production model in 2010. The group was also planning an all-new electric minivan concept for the U.S. Postal Service.

earth2tech said that with Fiat on board, Chrysler’s electric-vehicle lineup could get some lightweight compact and subcompact platforms from the Italian automaker.

J.D. Power and Associates powertrain analyst Mike Omotoso speculates that the bankruptcy judge or Fiat itself may decide to cancel Chrysler’s ENVI program completely since it may be too expensive.

Omotoso said that he expects Chrysler to put all their electric-ambitions on hold until further notice.

Chrysler is celebrating Earth Day by revealing an all-new electric minivan concept for the U.S. Postal Service. The struggling Auburn Hills automaker also said that is applying for the U.S. Department of Energy’s Transportation Electrification stimulus program for a grant that would allow it to build a nationwide demo fleet of electric-minivans that could be used by the USPS to deliver mail.

The Chrysler Town & Country ENVI concept for the USPS is a range-extended electric-vehicle powered by a 255-hp electric-motor that can travel 40 miles on battery power alone. After battery power is depleted, the 8 gallons of gasoline allows the electric-minivan to travel 400 miles.

Chrysler Celebrates Earth Day by Revealing All-new Electric Minivan Concepts to U.S. Postal Service

Chrysler invented the minivan 25 years ago. More than 12 million minivan sales later, Chrysler today showed off four all-electric Chrysler Town & Country minivan concepts to the U.S. Postal Service (USPS) as part of the USPS Earth Day celebration.

Chrysler LLC, in conjunction with the USPS and select energy service providers, also announced that the company intends to apply for the U.S. Department of Energy’s (DoE) Transportation Electrification stimulus program for a federal grant, which would enable Chrysler to establish a nationwide demonstration fleet of zero-emission electric minivans that could be used by the U.S. Postal Service for mail delivery.

“With more than a 40 percent market share, our Chrysler and Dodge minivans continue to lead the segment we created more than 25 years ago,” said Frank Klegon, Executive Vice President-Product Development, Chrysler LLC. “Our ENVI electric minivan concepts illustrate Chrysler’s innovation with electric vehicle technology and show what the future could hold.”

Chrysler’s ENVI group leveraged the flexibility of its electric-vehicle strategy to demonstrate an all-electric version of its best-selling minivan. These electric minivan concepts are targeted specifically for use by the U.S. Postal Service for mail delivery.

“We continue to look for energy-efficient replacement vehicles for our aging fleet as we explore ways to reduce our transportation-related carbon emissions,” said Sam Pulcrano, Vice President-Sustainability, U.S. Postal Service.

We’ve been hearing for some time that Chrysler’s ENVI division will offer its first electric-vehicle in late 2010. However, the Auburn Hills automaker, which recently partnered up with A123Systems to develop lithium-ion battery cells, never mentioned which one of its five ENVI concepts will enter production – until now.

According to a report by CNNMoney, which was recently invited out to test-drive the Chevy Volt prototype, Chrysler’s first battery-powered vehicle will be the 268-hp Dodge Circuit. Of course, that’s if Chrysler lives to see tomorrow.

Unlike the Chevrolet Volt, which will be 5-passenger, tree hugging plug-in electric hybrid with a gasoline engine, the Dodge Circuit will be a pure electric-car with no gasoline engine. It’s 268-hp electric-motor will provide 150 to 200 miles on a full charge with the ability to go from 0 to 60 mph in under 5 seconds and a top speed of 120 mph.

“To be able to meet a 2010 timeline, you have to be pretty far along in development, and right now we are,” said Lou Rhodes, head of Chrysler’s electric car program.

The Dodge Circuit is being seen as an electric-sports car that is similar to the $109,000 Tesla Roadster. Pricing for the Circuit has yet to be determined but will most likely undercut the Tesla.

A123Systems, a U.S.-based battery supplier who recently formed a partnership with Chrysler, said that it will built its battery plant in Michigan even if it doesn’t receive federal loans. The battery supplier, who also worked on the batteries for the Chevrolet Volt, said that as a part of its contract to build “Nanophosphate” lithium-ion batteries for Chrysler’s future electric-vehicles, it will build a Michigan plant whether or not it receives support from the government.

“With the Chrysler agreement, A123 will definitely build a plant in Michigan,” the company’s chief marketing officer, Ric Fulop, told Automotive News.

Chrysler announced last week that A123Systems will be responsible for supplying it with batteries for the company’s first ENVI electric-car due out in 2010.

A123Systems has applied for a $1.84 billion loan from the U.S. Energy Department for multiple plants, first of which will be build in Michigan. With multiple plants, A123Systems says it could hire 14,000 additional employees to produce 5 million hybrid battery packs or half-million batteries for plug-in hybrid vehicles.

Chrysler showed up to Detroit last week with five electric-drive concepts – none of which it has a concrete plan to build. According to Automotive News, Chrysler hopes to put at least one into production next year but the automaker is facing major obstacles.

Unlike its rival General Motors, Chrysler has not confirmed who will supply the lithium-ion battery for its electric-vehicles nor has it set a firm production date.

President of Chrysler’s ENVI division Lou Rhodes said that the company has already decided which one of the five vehicles it plans on producing next year but declined to identify it. He said that Chrysler is testing a total of 100 plug-in hybrids in commercial fleets this year.

Including the Chrysler Town & Country EV and the Jeep Wrangler Unlimited EV, Chrysler unveiled a new Jeep Patriot EV, a mid-sized Chrysler 200C EV and the Lotus based Dodge Circuit EV.

And just when you thought Chrysler was done throwing out E-REV (Range-extender electric-vehicles) concepts after the Dodge Circuit EV and the Jeep Patrior EV, the troubled-American automaker has pulled another one out of its ENVI bag of tricks. Chrysler says that the new 200C EV concept is influenced by the proportions of the Chrysler 300 to create a modern E-REV that appeals to both luxury and sports car enthusiasts.

After digging Chrysler’s press release, we managed to separate all the info about the design of the 200C EV and its Range-extender Electric Vehicle Technology (which was basically just a paragraph long).  The Chrysler 200C EV uses a small gasoline engine and integrated electric generator that produces electricity to extend the driving range to 400 miles. it can do 40-miles with zero fuel consumption and zero tailpipe emissions.

Detroit, Jan 11, 2009  -  The definitive blend of design and technology, the all-new Chrysler 200C EV concept redefines the idea of responsible mobility with a touch of class and sophistication never before embodied so elegantly in one vehicle.

The Chrysler 200C EV concept body was designed to manage aerodynamic forces while delivering a stunning form.

On the inside, the 200C EV continues the theme of embracing the future with a highly sculpted and richly appointed environment. The interior is free of switches and levers. All vehicle functions, settings and uconnect features are managed via a panoramic multimedia touch screen, a passenger-dedicated “techno-leaf” and a stowable tablet PC.

Based on a shortened version of Chrysler”s successful rear-wheel-drive platform, the Chrysler 200C EV is a performance sedan in a package that looks spirited and agile. It delivers a blend of style, performance and amenities that both automotive and technology enthusiasts want.

Simple and Elegant Exterior Styling
The Chrysler 200C EV concept vehicle evokes timeless beauty, coupling the organic form and language of Chrysler”s deep design roots with the noble proportions of the Chrysler 300 to create a modern product statement that appeals to both luxury and sports car enthusiasts.

“It was important to design a car that not only appealed to the Chrysler enthusiast, but also could sway the interest of a wide variety of potential customers,” said Nick Malachowski, Chrysler 200C EV Lead Exterior Designer. “The essence of the Chrysler 200C EV concept vehicle is sophisticated and fresh. It embraces a more organic design philosophy and helps to push the Chrysler brand design to the next level.”

Efficiency is a key element in the design of the Chrysler 200C EV, as its swept-back front end contributes to the vehicle”s aerodynamics. The front fascia is a modern interpretation of the winged Chrysler badge, and its distinct grille continues to shape and evolve Chrysler”s brand identity. The encompassed grille bars within the front fascia reinforce the sinuous elegance of the 200C EV concept vehicle with its assertive shape and precise execution.

The headlamps and taillamps are treated as dramatic sculptural elements on the vehicle and reinforce the organic form and function carried throughout the design theme. Their placement on the far corners of the vehicle help to visually reduce the front and rear overhangs and contribute to the vehicle”s efficient appearance. The lower frontal fog lights and rear backup lights are seamlessly integrated onto the surrounding fascia, and are minimized in scale through the use of LED technology. Modern graphic cues, such as the use of a dissipating dot matrix, are utilized throughout the concept vehicle as both functional and visual elements.

The Chrysler 200C EV concept vehicle projects a confident stance and proportion with its optimized wheel-to-body relationship. The clean body-side and restrained line work communicate an elegance achieved only when the “less is more” rule of modern design is followed. Simple, modern details such as aerodynamic mirrors and door handles continue the marriage of form and function.

The eco-friendly, water-based Liquid Graphite Pearl exterior color of the Chrysler 200C EV concept vehicle is a luminous, dark gray, which conveys a serious and sophisticated attitude. The windows are tinted in a Warm Bronze, helping to reduce air-conditioning loads. They are surrounded in hand-crafted polished aluminum accent trim.

Comfort and Connectivity Define Interior Space
Maximizing interior comfort, utilizing space and creating a connected environment were key objectives in creating the interior of the Chrysler 200C EV concept vehicle. Natural, luxurious, organic materials and modern furniture design served as inspiration for the interior design team.

In contrast to the exterior color, the interior space is light and inviting. On the inside, Leaf Green LED lighting and stitching accentuates the organic, clean shape. A combination of Pearl, Graphite and Leaf Green colors combine to create a warm and inviting interior cabin.

“The interior space of the 200C EV concept vehicle is defined by a modern, sculptural form and language that doesn”t sacrifice an open and spacious feel,” said Ryan Patrick Joyce, Chrysler 200C EV Lead Interior Designer. “If occupants are given the choice to take the short or long route home, I want the interior to inspire them to choose the long way.”

Immediately noticeable upon entry is the large screen located on the instrument panel. Starting the vehicle activates the electronic instrument panel that contains an advanced electronic vehicle information center, the next generation of Chrysler”s uconnect infotainment system and a compound touch surface.

The compound touch surface is a touch screen that serves as the hub for the vehicle”s connectivity system ““ a system that offers endless avenues of communication and transforms the interior into a portal to the outside world. It can be personalized to suit different drivers or simplified based on preference. Similar to recently introduced touch-screen electronic devices, the driver is able to move images, select infotainment choices and customize images, backgrounds, mood, volume and lighting by simply touching the screen itself.

The emphasis on open space is a hallmark of Chrysler 200C EV concept vehicle. An aluminum appliqué dramatically sweeps from the center console, across the instrument panel and onto the passenger”s door. The first-row compartment strays from traditional 50/50 seating and has been cleverly designed to give the perception of a more spacious 60/60 seating space. The driver and passenger seats, thin in design with a focus on spinal support, are covered in Pearl chromium-free leather and trimmed with Leaf Green stitching, giving the interior a sporty and luxurious look. All four bucket seats can be heated or cooled with individual temperature controls.

The first-row passenger has access to a techno-leaf that houses personal climate controls and an infotainment system. A simple touch to the smooth glass surface deploys a personal touch screen computer from the glove box. Users can surf the Internet, scroll through their personal media library, schedule vehicle maintenance or send directions to the driver. The compartment located below the techno-leaf is a charging station for personal mobile devices. Electronic devices can be charged by simply laying the unit on the charging pad. Rear passengers have access to a similar charging compartment under the cantilevered front-console arm rest.

The thick-rimmed, one-spoke steering wheel is trimmed in two types of leather. The top of the steering wheel is wrapped in Pearl leather and the lower is covered in Graphite leather accented with Leaf Green perforations. The steering column and stalks are milled from aluminum for a precise, technical feel. Drivers can move the transmission into drive positions via the right stalk. The horn pad is draped in Pearl leather with Leaf Green stitching and is dramatically swept back and emboldened with the Chrysler winged badge.

Climate control for the Chrysler 200C EV concept vehicle can be utilized indirectly or directly. Indirectly, air flows through the cabin via a metal-mesh outlet located near the windshield. Air can be pointed onto occupants through an illuminated metal-mesh bezel that surrounds the driver screen and passenger outboard vents.

Interior doors on the Chrysler 200C EV concept vehicle are two-tone. The top-half of the door is trimmed in Pearl leather with Leaf Green stitching and polished aluminum accents; the lower-half is an extension of the flooring.

The concept vehicle flooring is inspired by a Zen rock garden. Gentle Graphite waves flow from the floor, across the sides of the center console and undulate onto the doors. Removable carpeted floor mats are practical and sustainable as they are composed of recycled nylon.

Additional storage can be found in the trunk of the vehicle, which contains a load floor made from recycled leather.

Advance Interior Design Studio
The interior of the Chrysler 200C EV concept vehicle was created in Chrysler LLC”s Advance Interior Design Studio. The primary goal of this studio is to improve the quality and fit and finish on all future Chrysler, Dodge and Jeep® vehicles. By using state-of-the-art design software and computer modeling processes, interior designers can achieve quality and fit and finish objectives faster than ever before. Implementation of the Advance Interior Design Studio has enabled the company to engage suppliers up to a year earlier, allowing more time for customer research, feature approval and material selection. The Advance Interior Design Studio features a dedicated, customer-focused, interior-centric team of designers and engineers.

ENVI Range-extended Electric Vehicle Technology
The Chrysler 200C EV concept is the newest Chrysler ENVI electric-drive vehicle.

Utilizing ENVI”s Range-extended Electric Vehicle technology, the Chrysler 200C EV concept boasts clean, quiet elegance and seamless acceleration, underscoring the engaging driving experience of the Chrysler brand.

Capable of driving up to 40 miles on battery-only power ““ using zero gasoline and producing zero tailpipe emissions ““ the 200C EV uses a small gasoline engine and integrated electric generator that produces electricity to extend the driving range to 400 miles.

No matter how much Chrysler tries to change up its Dodge EV, the fact remains that the car is essentially a Lotus Europa with Dodge badging. In an effort to make the vehicle more Dodge-like, Chrysler is bringing back the Dodge EV under a new name – Dodge Circuit EV – with a couple of its own cosmetic additions.

“The Dodge Circuit EV displays a bold exterior and interior styling with outstanding performance,” says Chrysler. But the only thing changed here is the front lower grille, a new rear-bumper, a new rear-spoiler and the relocation of the plug-in socket. Other than that it’s the same old Dodge EV colored in “Tangogreen” wearing large “EV” graphics on both sides.

The Chrysler ENVI drivetrain remains the same so you’re still going to get 268-hp with a 0 to 60 time of less than 5 seconds and a top speed of 120 mph. Once the lithium-ion battery pack has been fully charged, the power driven to the electric motor will still allow a 150 to 200 mile range.

It’s still a concept joining the range of other ENVI concepts and Chrysler has still not revealed which ENVI concept it will put into production. Nardelli – the clock is ticking sir.

Dodge Circuit EV:

Tomorrow at the 2009 North American International Auto Show in Detroit, Chrysler’s ENVI department will be showing off a number of electric-vehicles and EREVs (Extended-Range Electric Vehicle). Joining the Jeep EV, Chrysler EV and the Dodge EV will be the Jeep Patriot EV.

As an EREV, the Jeep Patriot EV uses an electric-motor that is powered by a lithium-ion battery pack and a small gasoline engine with an integrated electric generator to produce additional energy to power the system when needed. The front-wheel-drive 5-passenger SUV produces a total of 150 kW (200-hp) from motor power and an additional 45 kW (60-hp) on continuous electric-power. The Jeep Patriot EV has a range of 400 miles, including 40 miles of zero fuel-consumption, zero-emissions, all-electric operation. 0 to 60 mph comes in approximately 8 seconds with a top speed of 100 mph.

The Jeep Patriot EV features a new ENVI Green Pearl exterior with a prominent “EV” graphics. Of course, this is just a concept and Chrysler has not yet said anything about when or if it will enter production.

Jeep Patriot EV:

At last year’s Detroit Auto Show, Chrysler threw a major press event outside Cobo center for the launch if it’s 2009 Dodge Ram pickup. Now, a year later, Chrysler is going to try something different and will show off the latest versions of the three electric vehicles it unveiled in September.

In September, Chrysler showed a gasoline-electric version of the Town & Country minivan known as the Chrysler EV; a gasoline-electric version of the Wrangler known as the Jeep EV; and an all-electric sports car based on Lotus carrying a Dodge EV badge.

According to Automotive News, the show version of the Dodge EV in Detroit will have more “Dodge-like” styling and could possibly be a four-passenger coupe.

All electric-vehicle products of the company come from its ENVI department. Chrysler said the ENVI will offer its first production vehicle by 2010, but it isn’t saying exactly which one will be offered to the market.
