While we won’t be getting it in the United States, General Motors has just released a picture of the Chevrolet Cruze station wagon that will debut at the 2012 Geneva Motor Show next month. The station wagon variant will be joining the sedan and the hatchback (another trim we wish we got in the U.S. but don’t) in the Cruze’s European lineup.

“The Cruze station wagon caters to an important market segment. It ticks all the boxes for European drivers in terms of distinctive design, dynamic driving, space and economy,” said Chevrolet Europe President and Managing Director Susan Docherty.

GM even goes out of its way to rub it in the face of Americans in the press release stating: “The new station wagon, which is not planned for sale in North America, features generous storage space and a choice of powerful and efficient engines as well as the state-of-the-art Chevrolet MyLink onboard infotainment system.” – Of course, us Americans hate space, efficiency and state-of-the-art infotainment systems.

Power for the Chevrolet Cruze Station wagon will come from a range go engine when it goes on sale in Euro later this summer. The power train lineup will include a 1.6L and 1.8L gasoline engines, a new 1.4L turbo gasoline, a new 1.7L diesel and an improved 2.0L diesel engine.

The Chevrolet Cruze, sold only as a sedan, brought in some successful sales numbers for 2011, with 231,732 units sold. For this year, Chevy has decided to add a wagon variant for the Cruze that expected to boost sales even higher.

Although GM is still finishing up with the wagon, it is rumored that the model will be several inches longer, with the addition of a sloping rear window and a tailgate.

This isn’t the first variant that GM has made for the Cruze, however. A five-door hatchback is only available in markets outside the U.S., and while GM hasn’t said if they will be doing the same with the wagon, it may be a profitable move for the automaker to add it in the states. The Jetta Sport Wagon and Hyundai Elantra Touring are the only competitors the Cruze wagon would have in the states.

Production for the Chevrolet Cruze at the Lordstown, Ohio plant has been temporarily suspended due to an unknown supplier issue as of Monday afternoon.

Employees on the first and second shifts worked shortened hours, as production stopped at about 1 pm eastern time, and the third shift was cut entirely. Trade workers remain on schedule for their regular shifts.

General Motors has not provided any details on the supplier issue, but spokeman Chris Lee says the automaker intends to resume production as soon as possible.

Although the Cruze is only second to the Toyota Corolla/Matrix in sales for the small car segment so far this year in the U.S., GM Chief Executive Dan Akerson feels this may present a setback in the brand’s goal of the Cruze being the top-selling car by the end of this year. So far, it has managed to top the Honda Civic in sales, which has lead the small car segment for some time, and the Ford Focus.

And we’re not just talking about the hottest selling products in the automotive industry. According to Advertising Age, the Chevrolet Cruze, Kia Soul and Jeep Wrangler are generating a lot of buzz and posting strong sales – so much so that they are among America’s hottest products in 2011, joining Dove soap, Goldfish crackers and Arizona Tea.

The publication says that the three models have been succeeding in the country with savvy marketing and a steady rebound in the U.S. light vehicle market.

Chevrolet Cruze: GM has sold more than 200,000 units of the Cruze during the first 10 months of 2011, making it GM’s hottest selling car after the Malibu, of which it sold 181,000 units in the same period.

Kia Soul: Through October, Kia sold 405,095 vehicles, with the Soul accounting for more than 85,000 of those.

Jeep Wrangler: Jeep‘s overall sales have jumped a nice 44 percent this year through October to 339,526 units. The Wrangler is Jeep’s best selling model in the U.S. this year accounting for 101,820 units sold through October.

Here’s a story that might not surprise many of you that are in the market for a new car. While the midsize segment is one of the most popular in the United States – that’s slowly changing. Soon enough you’ll see less and less Toyota Camry, Honda Accord and Ford Fusion type vehicles on the roads and more Chevrolet Cruze, Honda Civic, Hyundai Elantra and Ford Focus sized cars.

According to J.D. Power and Associates, compact cars will outsell midsize vehicles as early as this year. Many new car shoppers are picking small cars like the Chevrolet Cruze and even smaller ones like the Honda Fit and Hyundai Accent.

Around 5 years ago, automakers sold around 250,000 more midsize sedans than compact cars. But that was when gas prices were cheaper. J.D. Power says that by 2015, compacts and subcompacts will account for 20 percent of overall automotive sales in the United States – midsize cars will account for just 14 percent.

The move is already starting – for the past 15 years, the Camry has been the best-selling car in the U.S. For a brief period in 2011, the Cruze unseated the Camry as the best-selling car in the country. Even the Hyundai Elantra was shining with a 46 percent increase in sales to 161,000 through October.

According to GM’s Jim Federico, executive director, group vehicle line director and VLE for global compact, mini, small and EV, the company will offer a plug-in hybrid version of the Cruze to rival Toyota’s Prius Plug-in Hybrid.

Now here’s where things get a little confusing (nut not that much). Unlike the Chevrolet Volt, the electrified version of the Cruze will be a plug-in hybrid rather than an electric car with a range-extender.

“The Volt will always be a plug-in electric vehicle,” said Federico. “Plug-in Cruze doesn’t make Volt redundant at all. Plug-in Cruze would have a different powertrain. Plug-in hybrids use both the engine and motor all the time.”

He said that unlike the Volt, which has an internal combustion engine that replenishes the car’s lithium-ion battery pack, the Cruze would be a hybrid with external charging capability.

In English, that means the Volt drives the front wheels all of the time with electric-power – in the Cruze the plug-in uses a combination of both gasoline and electric power to move the front wheels.

Over 200,000 Chevy Cruze models have rolled off dealer’s lots so far this year, making it the U.S.’s ninth best-seller. Last month, sales numbers were on a decline since other automakers experiencing shortages have begun to catch up. As a result, Chevrolet will be shutting down its Lordstown, Ohio plant for the week after Thanksgiving.

Lordstown’s UAW Local 1714 website posted the details, and says the production of the Cruze will resume on December 5th. The Cruze should remain on track with inventory, and its goal to outsell the Colbat still, since three shifts plus some Saturdays were spent meeting consumer demands since the car’s September 2010 launch.

Analysts recommended a 60-day supply of inventory for the Cruze, and the plant has been making every effort to maintain around half of that. The steady 43-day supply dropped at September’s close to a 73-day supply at the end of October. Both analysts and GM executives expect the Cruze to keep up its sales numbers, even though brands like Honda, Toyota, and Ford have built up their inventories for the segment.

Chevrolet, which celebrated its Centennial yesterday is saying thanks a million – no really, we’re serious – the brand is saying thanks a million to buyers of its Chevrolet Cruze. The compact sedan, which was launched in North America in 2010, reached 1 million in sales this week worldwide.

In its first 12 months on sale, the Cruze ranked 10th among all U.S. vehicles sold. The production plant in Lordstown, Ohio has been running three shifts plus overtime Saturdays since late spring. Not to mention, it still has still difficulty meeting consumer demand.

Between October 2010 through September 2011, the Cruze cruised its way to the top 10 with a total of 211,503 units sold.

“I can’t think of a better birthday present,” said Chris Perry, vice president, global Chevrolet marketing and strategy. “Cruze’s combination of style, comfort, fuel-efficiency and safety is a hit across the globe. Our customers know a winner when they drive it.”

The compact sedan has helped the bow-tie brand bring in new buyers. So far this year, 42% of all Cruze buyers in the U.S. traded in a non-GM vehicle, with the Honda Civic, Ford Focus and Ford Taurus being the top traded in cars.

“Most of the show cars wear conceptual Z-Spec styling enhancements, which are being evaluated for production,” Chevrolet said in a statement. ” Z-Spec is a line of performance, styling, and personalization accessories available at Chevy dealerships.

Here’s what we’ll see:

Sonic Z-Spec #1 – Designers took a turbocharged Sonic five-door and dressed it with concept Z-Spec accessories. They added Z-Spec ground effects, a spoiler, unique grille and graphics package – then finished it off with a Torch Red exterior and Z-Spec concept 18-inch wheels. Inside, the Cobalt Red cabin features custom trim, including perforated black suede seat inserts, a Z-Spec sport pedal kit, sport shift knob and a racing-style flat-bottom steering wheel. Additional upgrades include performance brakes with four-piston calipers, a new high-flow exhaust system and performance suspension parts.

Sonic Z-Spec #2 – The next Sonic concept – in Flat White with Torch Red accents – builds on concept Z-Spec accessories with a more aggressive ground effects package, unique grille, rear spoiler and graphics package. It rides on Z-Spec concept 18-inch wheels and also includes a re-trimmed interior with Z-Spec sport pedal kit, Z-Spec sport shift knob and a flat-bottom steering wheel. It also features custom racing seats with the Z-Spec logo. The factory powertrain features the 1.4L turbo engine and six-speed manual transmission. Performance upgrades include brakes with four-piston calipers, a high-flow exhaust system and suspension parts.

Sonic Z-Spec 4D Concept – The more formal look of the Sonic sedan lends itself to a touring car-style motif, which this Ashen Grey Metallic concept picks up with concept Z-Spec ground effects, rear spoiler, grille, “Chevrolet” graphics and larger Z-Spec concept 18-inch wheels. As with its five-door counterparts, this Sonic features a re-trimmed interior – in Dark Titanium with Cobalt Red accents – Z-Spec sport pedal kit, aluminum sport shift knob and a flat-bottom steering wheel (trimmed with Cobalt Red suede). The factory turbo 1.4L engine and six-speed manual transmission are complemented by performance upgrades that include four-piston caliper brakes, a high-flow exhaust system and suspension parts.

Sonic Dusk – The most subtle of the Sonic concepts is the Dusk. It features a Berlin Blue exterior, with a mild concept ground effects package, unique grille treatment and 18-inch concept wheels in dark Galvano Silver. Even the lights are tinted blue for a sophisticated statement. The Mojave leather interior has custom seat inserts, Z-Spec shift knob with satin chrome trim, Z-Spec sport pedals and accessory interior trim kit. The Sonic Dusk also features a suede-trimmed, flat-bottom steering wheel, custom audio system and brake and suspension upgrades.

Chevrolet is keeping a few super-secret Sonics under wraps until the SEMA show, each representing an even higher level of performance and personalization.

Cool Cruzes

A pair of custom Cruze sedans demonstrates what is possible with conceptual accessories and a little creativity.

Cruze Z-Spec – Wearing concept Z-Spec ground effects, 18-inch custom wheels, an accessory spoiler and a high-flow grille, the Cruze Z-Spec has the looks and feel of a taut touring car. The exterior appearance of this Cruze is enhanced with a new stripe package that will be available soon, while on the inside are special seat inserts, a racing-style pedal kit, accessory shift knob and interior trim, as well as a new steering wheel.

Cruze Dusk – Complementing the Sonic Dusk concept, the Cruze Dusk suggests a more subtle and sophisticated approach to personalization, including a mild concept ground effects package, a unique grille treatment and dark-tinted wheels. The interior has custom seat inserts, along with an accessory shift knob, sport pedals, interior trim kit, a suede-trimmed steering wheel and a custom audio system.

General Motors confirmed today that it will be producing the diesel version of the Chevrolet Cruze at its Lordstown, Ohio plant. The diesel version of the Cruze will be built alongside the gasoline powered model.

GM will spend $5.5 million into the factory to upgrade the assembly line and body shop and will start building the diesel Cruze in early 2013.  The plant currently runs around the clock to produce enough Cruze units to meet demand.

Since its launch last fall, the model has outsold many of its competitors over the last couple of months including the Honda Civic, Volkswagen Jetta and the Toyota Corolla.

According to GM executives, the company’s efforts to expand Chevrolet’s presence across the globe will likely help the brand achieve record sales for 2011.

The company said that Chevrolet’s current worldwide sales pace will help it pass its prior global sales record of 4.4 million units for 2011. Apparently, a Chevrolet is sold every 6.7 seconds.

Director of Chevrolet marketing, Cristi Landy, said that Chevrolet’s drive is being fueled by the success of the Cruze, which year-to-date is the best-selling compact sedan in the United States. The Chevrolet Cruze is currently the fourth most-purchased vehicle of any kind for buyers under 25 years of age.

Never have I ever said anything spectacular about a Chevrolet product during my time on Earth thus far, halo cars Camaro and Corvette aside. And I thought this while playing the juvenile game with a couple of friends and trying to mack it with the girl sitting next to me – I guess this reassures that my auto enthusiasm is still very much healthy. Anyway, trying to figure out what to say about the new German/Korean/American collaboration called the 2011 Chevrolet Cruze top-spec’d to LTZ trim, I thought long and hard about the opening statement I made.

And it’s true. I grew up when Chevrolet offered the Cavalier and the Cobalt, both of which were so absolutely terrible that I dreaded even getting one as a rental when traveling abroad. Not to mention, the woefulness extended further than Chevy’s entry-level lineup. I’ll bet many others my age and even a little older have a general distaste for the nameplate because of the cars we remembered the brand for making. But truth be told, Chevrolet – or GM in general in fact – has made a huge improvement after filing for Chapter 11 back in 2009.

GM swears that their first effort post-restructuring is a world-class leader in its segment. That first effort is the Chevrolet Cruze. GM’s at-the-time president of North American operations said about the Cruze during its press release: “people will buy it not because it’s cheap, but because they like it.” So can the new 2011 Chevrolet Cruze own up to all of the hype that it has generated? I don’t know about you, but I would like to know.

2011 Chevrolet Cruze Specifications:

Exterior:

So let’s start off with the looks. I will have to say that in this segment, the aesthetics trophy will have to be tied between either the Ford Focus or the Hyundai Elantra. Now I’m not saying that the Chevrolet Cruze is so butt-ugly that I’d rather stare at the lovely cheeks of a baboon. But the Chevrolet Cruze isn’t particularly striking like the other two are. I do have to admit though that the top-spec LTZ model is subtly handsome in a more sophisticated, yet conservative way thanks to its larger 18-inch wheels and subtly more aggressive bodywork. But it can’t match the modernity of the Ford Focus or the swoopy and seductive lines of the Elantra. If anything, the Chevrolet Cruze elicits responses such as “not bad” or “pretty good,” but not quite “OMG IT’S AMAZING!”

Interior:

I would have to say that the interior of the Cruze is by far the best of the bunch, overshadowing even the previous leader in initial interior build quality, the Volkswagen Jetta. All of the materials and surfaces made you think that you were in a car that cost at least a good $10,000 more than the Cruze’s sub-$20,000 price.

Performance:

So things are starting to shape up pretty good for the new 2012 Chevrolet Cruze LTZ. But driving is where things begin to get a bit choppy. Power is supplied by GM’s new global four-cylinder that was co-developed with GM of Europe’s Opel brand. It’s a turbocharged 1.4L EcoTec four-banger that produces about 138-hp and 148 lb-ft of torque. Sounds ok, but then you ponder whether you can get a faster, more powerful engine. Therein lies problem number one—the 1.4L engine is the only engine offered other than the 1.8L naturally-aspirated engine in the base model. It’s obvious through Chevrolet’s marketing and advertising that fuel economy is a primary concern and it’s very apparent with the new Cruze. Zero to sixty comes up in a not-so-class leading 8.9 seconds and to make things worse, only a six-speed automatic is offered.

On the complete upside, handling and ride quality, much like the interior, seem to be strong suits. Although it is far from the connected and enthralling liveliness of the Mazda3, the Cruze still makes a statement for itself for a decent blend between the two. Approach a corner and body motions are very well controlled with little to no waft. Factor in some scenarios with different road surfaces and varying bank angles, the Cruze manages to handle like a champ evoking more confidence than you’d expect with equally the amount of composure. It was very much a surprise most notably considering GM’s choice to use a cost-cutting torsion-beam rear axle with a Watt’s Z-Link from the Opel Astra. The electronically-powered steering is sufficient for the moderate cornering but is way too fast and eager for spot-on accuracy with turn-ins. The quick ratio allows for ease of use at low speeds for instances like maneuvering around parking spots. But 90% of the time, you’ll find yourself turning-in way too quickly when the pace quickens up on the corners. Even in day-to-day driving, the quick steering still required some getting used to. Make your way to the highway however, the Cruze manages to pull off the title as being the best long-distance cruiser of any car in its segment. The ride quality and body control are truly class-leading for their abilities to give the Cruze the feeling of a much more upscale automobile.

Overall:

When compared to the competition, the Chevrolet Cruze is undoubtedly a serious player in the segment of econo-sedans and this is quite a statement. After conducting some research of Chevy’s past attempts at econo-sedans, it seems that success in the segment never really went well for Chevrolet’s attempts. And this dates back to the days of the loathed Chevette and Cavalier. As history tells us, the Japanese invented and set the standard for the economy sedan by establishing the basic formula of what should define an economy sedan. Over time, many companies have taken that formula and attempted to create their own versions. For instance, the Mazda took the econo-sedan to a new level by showing the world: economy sedans don’t have to be boring to drive. That said, the Cruze takes the basic formula, adds class-leading interior and ride quality and not-so-terrible handling characteristics, thus making it a competent competitor.

But because it speaks more to the average consumer than the enthusiasts and I for one being a diehard enthusiast—the Cruze rates above average in my book. As part of my recommendation and the purpose of this review, I would say those seeking a more engaging driving experience should go for the Mazda3. Those who want an option for a diesel and near-German build quality can opt for the Volkswagen Jetta. Buyers who seek more of a fashion statement can opt for the Hyundai Elantra. And if you just flat out don’t care, you should look into the given Toyota Corolla or Honda Civic.

And of course, let’s not forget about the new Ford Focus, which is the current segment standard. Either way, the Cruze poses as a good default model for the segment. In the bigger scheme of things, the Cruze represents that Chevrolet has at least mastered the basic formula of a quality economy sedan for the first time in its history. Hopefully for the next Cruze, the brand would be more interested in considering a more enthusiastic approach. Combine that with the qualities of the existing Cruze and Chevrolet could easily top the segment in my opinion. It’s a start.

In August, the Chevrolet Cruze kept its best-selling compact car crown in the United States for the fourth month in a row. Sales of the Cruze totaled a strong 21,807 – helping the Cruze maintain its fifth-consecutive month of Cruze sales exceeding 20,000 units.

Calendar year to date, the Cruze has sold a total of 169,427 units. Chevrolet dealers have about a 30-day supply of Cruze sedans, roughly half the industry average.

Interestingly though, the original Blues Brothers cruisers were not Chevrolet products at all. In fact, the first one was a retired Dodge Monaco police cruiser where as the remake in 2000 featured a Ford LTD Crown Victoria.

So unless there’s a new Blues Brothers on the way with the Chevrolet Cruze as being the featured car, it’s hard to see any connection between The Blues Brothers.

“As we celebrate 100 years of Chevrolet, it’s right that we should mark this by celebrating other elements of American culture,” said Chevrolet UK’s Managing Director, Mark Terry. “We’re the only US brand to truly establish a foothold across all segments of the UK and European car market, and much of that is down to the proud heritage and cultural associations that people make with our brand. Kelley Blue Book has just released their recommendation list for the four top new compact cars. The contenders that made it to the list are the Chevrolet Cruze, the Ford Focus, the Honda Civic, and the Hyundai Elantra—all of which are brand new as of this year.

The cars were ranked according to their exterior, interior, performance, comfort and convenience, and value.

“At some point in time, most everyone drives a compact sedan, whether it is a commuter car, second car, empty nester car or even a rental car,” said Jack R. Nerad, executive editorial director and executive market analyst for kbb.com. “Because this vehicle class is an inevitable part of most American drivers’ lives, we wanted to put the top new models up against each other head-to-head to see how they would fare.”

The list goes as follows. Fourth place goes to the 2011 Chevrolet Cruze LTZ, which according to KBB’s ranking, walked away with a not great, but passing 6.7 out of 10 and was complimented for its ability to “provide big-car virtues in a smaller package.”

Third place is taken by the 2012 Ford Focus SEL for its sense of athleticism and for being the sportiest out of everything in its segment. The Ford Focus’s score was 6.9 out of 10.

Second place is non-existent because two cars tied for first. The 2011 Hyundai Elantra Limited was chosen for its good looks where as the 2012 Honda Civic EX-L Navi tied with Hyundai for it being a “superb example of balance, value, and pedigree.”

“While the caliber of vehicles is better than ever in the compact sedan category across the board, each model proved to have different strengths and weaknesses that potential buyers should know about before they make their final decision,” added Nerad. “The cars are in the same segment, but they certainly aren’t the same, and we found that each meets the needs of a particular set of consumers.”

The Chevrolet Cruze has been seeing some good success and now, there are some statistics to further support its growth trend.

So far the Chevrolet Cruze took the title as the best-selling US compact in July with total sales wringing up at 24,648 cars for the month, outselling the Toyota Corolla, Hyundai Elantra, the Ford Focus and every other car in its segment.

“We’re competitive for the first time ever,” Joel Ewanick, GM’s chief marketing officer, said in an interview. “The buyers are completely different than we’ve seen before.”

In the bigger picture, GM has sold a total of 147,620 Cruzes in the US since its launch through July, selling more than the Prius and still trailing the Corolla, which is at 154,324 units.

“The Cruze is definitely appealing to the audience that would look at Japanese and Korean compacts,” said Alec Gutierrez, manager of vehicle valuations at Kelley Blue Book. “Domestic compacts are doing a better job of swaying that audience.”

Refresher: The 2011 Chevrolet Cruze base LS model is powered by a 136-hp 1.8L 4-cylinder engine, while the Eco, LT and LTZ model get a 1.4L turbo 4-cylinder Ecotec engine making 138-hp and a maximum torque of 148 lb-ft. The 1.4L turbo models are expected to have a cruising range of more than 500 miles and the Cruze Eco is estimated to get an EPA fuel-economy rating of 42 mpg on the highway. All 2011 Cruze models are available with a 6-speed manual or a 6-speed automatic transmission. Prices start at $16,995 for the base model to $22,695 for the top-of-the-line model.

Kelley Blue Book has just released their recommendations for the best cars for students going back to school. The recommendations consist of two lists, the first being the top-five best new cars and the second, the best five used cars for students.

“Each year we have more great choices to consider for our top back-to-school rides list, because auto manufacturers continue to outdo themselves with the features and amenities they offer on vehicles that are optimal for students,” said Jack R. Nerad, KBB’s executive editorial director and market analyst. “With so many vehicle choices, the key to shopping smart is finding a set of wheels that pleases both parent and child, which is no small task. The good news is the recently redesigned kbb.com provides a host of tools to help find the best car and get the best deal possible.”

The vehicles chosen had to meet a certain criteria: safety, affordability, versatility, reliability, cost of ownership and fuel economy and of course, aesthetic and driving fun factor. All the cars had to be available for less than $18,000 using KBB’s own pricing guide.

Beginning with the top-five new vehicles list, checking in at number five is the all-new Chevrolet Cruze and was chosen for its well-appointed and quiet cabin, its spaciousness for five inside and large trunk for all of the students’ everyday needs. Next is the Fiat 500 for its affordability, comfort, appealing looks and frugal fuel economy. The Ford Focus takes third for its cool looks, modern and well-assembled insides, hint of sportiness and advanced audio and infotainment systems. Second is taken by the Honda Fit for its nimble handling and overall package of efficiency, fun and practicality. And last but not least, the Hyundai Accent takes first for its sense of value, high standard equipment list and roomy insides.

The top-five used cars list is started off with the 2007 Nissan Sentra in fifth for seating for five, spacious cargo room and CVT automatic transmission, which translates into good fuel economy. The 2007 Ford F150 comes in at forth, which KBB says is good for those who think bigger-is-better for safety. For its sheer size and five-star NHTSA front crash rating, attractive aesthetics and practical abilities, the F150 is a solid choice. And to add a little bit of our recommendation, there are always diesel versions to tackle the concern for fuel economy.

Third is a confusing one for us, but KBB recommends the 2007 Kia Sedona minivan. KBB themselves know that students don’t like pure minivans, but for its practicality, high safety rating, the Sedona’s space definitely helps students with their hauling of gear, friends, and the occasional “parking” scenario.

Second is taken by the 2008 Chevrolet HHR for its retro looks and lastly, the 2007 Suzuki SX4 is pegged for the number one recommended used car for students. It was chosen because it’s the least-expensive all-wheel drive car on the market and it comes with Suzuki’s no-deductible 100,000-mile seven-year powertrain warranty that’s also fully transferable.
