Supercars and sports coupes are my favorite segment of any segment out there. So you can images the excitement I had when I heard that CARandDRIVER was lining up 11 of the world’s most desirable supercars for a side-by-side drag race.

The list includes some of the most exciting cars out there including the Porsche 911 GT3 RS, Audi R8 GT, Ferrari 458 Italia, Lotus Evora S, Nissan GT-R, Lexus LFA, Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG and even the BMW 1-Series M Coupe. Including many others, that a combined 82 cylinders and nearly 5,000 horsepower – wrapped in $1.5 million of beautifully sculpted aluminum, fiberglass and carbon fiber skins

So who won the drag race and came out on top? The $89,950 Nissan GT-R. That’s right the Nissan GT-R was showing its rear-end to the $225,325 Ferrari 458 Italia, the $198,000 Audi R8 GT and the $200,00 Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG.

Even though the Nissan GT-R won the race, the Ferrari 458 Italia won Motor Trend’s 2011 Best Driver’s Car.

The only car we feel that is missing from this gang that deserves a spot in this battle is the Cadillac CTS-V Coupe.

Earlier this month, the 2012 Chevrolet Corvette ZR1 hit up the Nurburgring Nordschleife and returned an impressive lap time of 7:19.63. That put the 2012 Corvette ZR1 ahead of the 2012 Nissan GT-R and right below the Porsche 911 GT2 RS on the board.

With things already hot at the Nurburgring for Corvette engineers, they recently hit up the Nordschleife with the 2012 Chevrolet Corvette Z06, outfitted with the Z07 chassis package.

Behind the steering was Corvette engineer Jim Mero who ended up posting an impressive lap of 7:22.68, beating the previous Z06 record at the Nurburgring by 20 seconds. That lap time is still better than the Nissan GT-R.

General Motors has given dealers pricing information for the 2012 Chevrolet Corvette and it seems like the cost of owning a ‘Vette is going up. According to documents given to dealers, the sticker price for the 2012 Chevrolet Corvette is going up between $480 and $1,150, depending on which model you choose.

The only exception in the 2012 Chevrolet Corvette lineup is the ZR1, which is getting a price drop of $75 to $112,500, including the $975 shipping charge.

Prices for Chevrolet Corvette options are also going up. The 2LT Corvette group regular and Grand Sport coupes will go from $1,195 in 2011 to $2,095 for the 2012. The 3LT will go up from $4,205 to $5,995, while the 4LT package will go up from $7,705 to $9,495.

The Chevrolet Corvette Centennial Special Edition will cost you an additional $4,950 and can be had on any Corvette model.

Rick Hendrick, one of the world’s most important figures in NASCAR Sprint Cup Series racing is building his own 7.0L 505-horsepower LS7 engine that will go into his new 2011 Chevrolet Corvette Z06 Carbon Edition.

Hendrick is the 13th participant to build his own engine at the build center.

“For me, participating in this engine build is the ultimate connection to my Corvette,” said Hendrick. “This is one of my favorite cars in the world, and now it will be that much more special knowing I personally built the engine. It’s a really unique experience that Chevrolet is offering its customers.”

The Corvette Engine Build Experience is the world’s most hands-on supercar program and allows customers who order a Corvette Z06 or ZR1 the to build their cars’ LS7 or LS9 engine at General Motors’ Performance Build Center (PBC) in Wixom, Mich.

The Engine Build Experience is a $5,800 option when a customer purchases a Corvette Z06 or ZR1.

2011 Chevrolet Corvette Grand Sport

Earlier this morning, General Motors announced that it will be investing $131 million in its Bowling Green plant to support production of the next generation Chevrolet Corvette. However, the question remains – when will we see the next-generation Corvette?

GM said that the plant will continue building the current generation Corvette for at least the next two model years, including the 2012 model year that begins this summer. During that period, the investment will start to take effect, preparing the facility for the next-generation Corvette.

The Corvette is currently in its sixth-generation and hasn’t received any major upgrades since the sixth-generation model made its debut in 2005. Nonetheless, Chevrolet recently announced a line of upgrades for the 2012 Corvette model year.

Chevrolet Corvette Bowling Green Assembly Plant

General Motors announced today that it will invest $131 million (not $100 million as reported yesterday) in its Bowling Green Assembly plant to support production of the next generation Chevrolet Corvette, adding about 250 jobs.

“This is a significant day for anyone who believes that America should build world-class, high-performance products,” said Mark Reuss, GM North America president. “Corvette has no domestic peer for performance and pedigree and stands alongside the world’s best supercars with almost 60 years of continuous heritage.

“This investment in Kentucky is among $3.4 billion made in the United States since mid-2009 to keep or create more than 9,000 jobs for American workers,” Reuss said.

Bowling Green is the exclusive manufacturer of all versions of the Chevrolet Corvette including the Coupe, Convertible, Grand Sport, Z06, and ZR1.

General Motors announced today that its North America President Mark Reuss will be holding a press conference tomorrow at GM Bowling Green Assembly, 600 Corvette Drive, Bowling Green, KY 42101.

GM said the announcement is a “positive news announcement for the plant and Corvette lovers.”

According to sources that spoke with the Wall Street Journal, GM plans to announce an investment of around $100 million to upgrade its Corvette factory in Bowling Green, Ky., people familiar with the situation said, the latest sign that auto maker’s penny-pinching days are behind it.

After some leaked details, General Motors today released official info on the 2012 Chevrolet Corvette upgrades. Enhancement for the 2012 model year Corvette include upgrades to the Z06 and ZR1 models along with interior upgrades across the whole Corvette lineup.

Corvette Performance Reaches Higher in 2012
Interior enhancements, new performance packages highlight upgrades

DETROIT – Chevrolet announced today that it will once again elevate Corvette’s performance capabilities with a series of improvements for the 2012 model year that improve on-track performance and on-road comfort. They include enhancements to the high-performance Z06 and ZR1 models as well as interior upgrades across the Corvette lineup.

Sports car fans will get their first look at the 2012 models – including the racing-inspired appearance of the Chevrolet Centennial Edition – at a special event this weekend at the National Corvette Museum in Bowling Green, Ky. Production begins in July.

New Michelin Cup ZP tires elevate Z06/ZR1 performance

Corvette’s greater performance for 2012 begins with the new, optional Michelin^® Pilot^® Sport Cup Zero Pressure tires, which are available on the two highest-performing models, the lightweight, 505-hp (377 kW) Z06 and the maximum-performance, 638-hp (476 kW) supercharged ZR1. They are competition-oriented tires, optimized for warm, dry conditions to increase cornering and handling capability.

When combined with the Corvette’s exclusive Performance Traction Management (PTM) technology – which manages torque delivery for maximum performance – the tires are expected to help set new benchmarks for Corvette performance. Engineers estimate an 8-percent gain in maximum lateral acceleration, to more than 1.1g, and improved braking distance. Testing at Virginia International Raceway has demonstrated improvement of approximately three seconds per lap.

The Cup ZP tires were developed by the same Michelin engineers who develop tires for Corvette Racing in the American Le Mans Series and are essentially street-legal versions of a racing tire. They are included in the optional Z07 performance package on the Corvette Z06 and a new PDE performance package on the ZR1. The 285/30-19 (front) and 335/25-20 (rear) tires are matched with all-new aluminum Cup-style wheels in satin black or machined finishes. They are about five pounds lighter (2.2 kg) and stronger than the 20-spoke wheel offered in 2011.

Performance Traction Management (offered on the Z06 for the first time in 2012) is an advanced system that optimizes traction for greater and more consistent on-track performance. The system also integrates traction control, active handling and selective ride control systems to enhance race track driving consistency and overall performance. When full throttle is applied upon exiting a corner, it automatically manages acceleration dynamics.

A full-width racing-style spoiler for improved aerodynamics is also included in both the ’12 Z07 and PDE packages. The Z06 model will now offer Magnetic Selective Ride Control, the world’s fastest-reacting suspension technology – an innovation Corvette pioneered several years ago. And as before, Brembo carbon ceramic brakes will be a part of the Z07 chassis package (they are standard on ZR1). Michelin Pilot Sport 2 tires remain standard on the ZR1.

A carbon fiber hood will be an available option on 2012 Z06 models, while the standard manual transmission for ZR1 will include taller gearing in fifth and sixth gears, for a 2-mpg improvement in highway fuel economy.

Interior and feature changes

All 2012 Corvette models will include a new seat design and a new steering wheel. The seats feature larger bolsters on the seat back and cushion areas, which provide better driver support, especially in high-performance driving while remaining comfortable for daily street driving. Microfiber suede seat inserts are optional and improve tactile feel, as well as add additional support.

The new seats are complemented by the revised steering wheel, featuring model-specific badges, streamlined switch trim and wrapped spokes. Padded center console and armrests for all models are now included for 2012. An additional visual touch inside the car is contrasting color stitching – in red, blue and yellow – which is available with the custom leather-wrapped interior.

Also coming in 2012 is a new Bose uplevel audio system, which includes nine speakers (compared to seven in 2011) for improved audio quality that is more precisely tuned to the cabin’s acoustics. New tweeters located in the instrument panel and improved Bose Nd next-generation bass performance is the main benefit that Corvette drivers will hear.

A new Technology Package (2LT trim level) brings together many of the Corvette’s popular infotainment features and makes them available for more models. The package’s equipment includes the navigation radio, head-up display, Bose premium audio system, Bluetooth wireless phone connectivity and a USB port.

Wrapping up the new features for 2012 is the availability for customers to select brake caliper colors, for more personalization of their Corvette. The calipers are offered in the red, yellow, silver or gray.

DETROIT – Chevrolet, founded by a racing pioneer 100 years ago, celebrates its performance heritage with the 2012 Chevrolet Centennial Edition Corvette, which features a sleek black color scheme, unique design elements and Corvette’s trademark sports car technology.

The 2012 Centennial Edition package will be available on all Corvette models – including Grand Sport, Z06 and ZR1 – starting this summer.

The special package was inspired by Chevrolet’s racing-bred foundation, which continues with Corvette’s international racing excellence and production sports car prominence.

Chevrolet will auction a Corvette Z06 Centennial Edition at the Barrett-Jackson collector car auction in West Palm Beach, Fla., on April 9, with the proceeds to benefit the Austin Hatcher Foundation for Pediatric Cancer. It will be the 100th 2012 Corvette off the assembly line, with a vehicle identification number ending in “00100.”

The Chevrolet Centennial Edition Corvette expresses racing heritage, but does so with a sleek, modern, even sinister-looking appearance. The Centennial Edition package comes exclusively in Carbon Flash Metallic, with satin-black graphics and unique Centennial Satin Black wheels and red brake calipers. The wheels are constructed of lightweight cast-spun aluminum and include a thin red outline around the perimeter of its surface on the Z06. The wheels are specific to the respective Corvette models, including 18-inch/19-inch for Coupe, Convertible and Grand Sport; and 19-inch/20-inch for Z06 and ZR1.

Chevrolet Corvette Z06 crashes while traveling over 230 mph

Over the weekend at the Texas Mile Hinson Motorsports’ a record setting Turbo Chevrolet Corvette Z06 crashed while traveling at over 230 mph.

Fortunately (and miraculously), the driver emerged from the accident with minor injuries and was later released from the hospital.

The Turbo Corvette Z06 was modified by Hinson Motorsports and produced a whopping 1,428 horsepower at the wheels. Modifications included a rear-mounted twin-turbocharger system, reinforced engine internals, upgraded fuel injectors, and a Quaiffe differential. All that is now gone.

2011 Chevrolet Corvette ZR1 at the Ron Fellows Performance Driving School

Until now, the Corvette Driving School was exclusively offered to those that purchased a Chevrolet Corvette ZR1. Chevrolet has now announced that U.S. customers who purchase any model of a new Corvette through Feb. 28 can also take advantage of free tuition at either of the two official Corvette driving schools. For a limited time, the school is available to buyers of any new Corvette model, from the Coupe and Convertible, to the Grand Sport and Z06 models.

2011 Chevrolet Corvette Z06 Carbon Limited Edition

The very first 2011 Chevrolet Corvette Z06 Carbon Limited Edition sold for $297,000 at the Barrett-Jackson auction in Palm Beach earlier this year. While the winner also won the unique opportunity to watch the car going down the assembly line at the famed Corvette Assembly Plant in Bowling Green, KY, he could have waited and saved himself $206,040.

According to Corvette Marketing Manager Harlan Charles, the 2011 Chevrolet Corvette Z06 Carbon Limited Edition will carry a price tag of $90,960.

The 2011 Chevrolet Corvette Z06 Carbon Limited Edition gets Brembo carbon ceramic brakes with dark gray metallic calipers and Magnetic Selective Ride Control, available for the first time on the Z06. The model will be available in two colors including Inferno Orange and the all-new Supersonic Blue. Black headlamps and mirrors, a ZR1-style body color spoiler, body color door handles, carbon fiber raised hood, black carbon fiber rockers and splitter will also be available.

2011 Chevrolet Corvette Z06X Track Car Concept

Chevrolet motorsport portfolio is pretty expansive – ranging from LeMans to club racing. To celebrate and suggest new ideas and components for the transformation of the production Corvette into a serious, closed-course track car, Chevrolet will debut the  Corvette Z06X Concept at the 2010 SEMA Show.

The Chevrolet Corvette Z06X Concept shows how enthusiasts can use the brand’s expanding portfolio of performance parts to create a full-on track car. Chevrolet teamed with Pratt and Miller, partners in Corvette Racing in the American LeMans Series, to create the concept

“Racing is an integral part of Corvette performance and technology,” said Tadge Juechter, Corvette chief engineer. “This concept car represents a mid-point between our GT race car and the production Z06, prepared by the team responsible for the Corvette Racing C6.R race cars, and featuring many performance parts owners can choose today.”

The Z06X concept is based on the Corvette Z06 with the 1LZ equipment package, along with the Z07 Performance Package and CFZ Carbon Fiber Package. The 2011 Z06 with the Z07 package creates the lightest production Corvette and includes carbon ceramic brakes and Magnetic Ride Control. The CFZ package offers body components that enhance aerodynamic down force on the race track, including a front splitter. The Z06X Concept is being shown in a low-gloss Icy White Metallic exterior color, accented with exposed carbon fiber body components and red trim.

The Chevrolet Corvette Z06X Concept shows how enthusiasts can use the brand’s expanding portfolio of performance parts to create a full-on track car. Chevrolet teamed with Pratt and Miller, partners in Corvette Racing in the American LeMans Series, to create the concept

“Racing is an integral part of Corvette performance and technology,” said Tadge Juechter, Corvette chief engineer. “This concept car represents a mid-point between our GT race car and the production Z06, prepared by the team responsible for the Corvette Racing C6.R race cars, and featuring many performance parts owners can choose today.”

The Z06X concept is based on the Corvette Z06 with the 1LZ equipment package, along with the Z07 Performance Package and CFZ Carbon Fiber Package. The 2011 Z06 with the Z07 package creates the lightest production Corvette and includes carbon ceramic brakes and Magnetic Ride Control. The CFZ package offers body components that enhance aerodynamic down force on the race track, including a front splitter. The Z06X Concept is being shown in a low-gloss Icy White Metallic exterior color, accented with exposed carbon fiber body components and red trim.

Romeo Ferraris Chevrolet Corvette Z06

One of the beauties about any American sports car is their abundance of aftermarket support, thanks to their bolt-on simplicity and performance capabilities. The Chevrolet Corvette, being one of them, has proven to the world that the Americans can make a decent sports car. And just like the Mustang, Camaro, Firebird, the GTO and more, the Corvette receives a lot of attention from aftermarket firms. And this Romeo Ferraris Corvette Z06 is no different.

Romeo Ferraris takes the Z06s LS7 7.0L V8 and adds a Vortech centrifugal supercharger, an air-to-air aluminum intercooler, and high-flow injectors. The result: 667 hp and 606 lb-ft of torque, up from 505 hp and 470 lb-ft of torque. That power also comes from the help of a new sport exhaust system. Additionally, with enough power to spin the Earth in the opposite direction, RF fitted larger performance disk-brakes. Bringing everything together, 0-60 is clocked in at 3.3 seconds and if you”re feeling lucky”¦.punk”¦will continue to thrust you like Dirty Harry”s .44 Magnum to 124 mph in under 10 seconds. Top speed isn”t a surprise, at 211 mph.

Visually, the RF Z06 receives new wheels and a matte black paint job. Inside, Romeo Ferraris also adds an in-house “Commando” sport steering wheel by himself truly, Recaro Sportster seats and other leather touches to replace plastic interior moldings.

But as much as the Corvette is a performance bargain, majority of the stuff isn”t exactly bespoke to Mr. Ferraris himself and seems like almost anybody with the slightest knowledge of aftermarket tuning. Do the modifications done to this here Corvette justify the extra cost it could potentially inflict on prospective buyers?

General Motors Performance Build Center

Most supercar owners can only dream of being involved in the production of their vehicle before taking delivery of it. Well, General Motors is allowing new Corvette shoppers to do just that. Any customer who now orders a 2011 Chevrolet Corvette Z06 or ZR1 will have the option to build their LS7 or LS9 at the company’s Performance Build Center in Wixom, Michigan.

“In a way, this is a dream program for a Corvette customer. I would have jumped at the chance to build the 427 in my “67 “Vette, and that didn”t have half of what goes into one of these modern precision engines,” said Tom Stephens, GM vice chairman, Global Product Operations. “Today’s LS7 and LS9 Corvette engines are pinnacle achievements in engineering, and to personally involve our customers in their final creation shows the depth of Chevrolet”s commitment to make lasting connections with the customer.”

Of course all this fun comes at a price tag. The Engine Build Experience is an option with a suggested retail price of $5,800 and you’ll have to cash out extra to travel to and from Metro Detroit.

Exclusive Program Lets Customers Help Create Their Own Corvette

DETROIT ““ For enthusiasts who want to be personally involved in creating their Corvette, Chevrolet”s new Corvette Engine Build Experience allows them to literally build the engine for their new car.

In what is believed to be the world”s most hands-on super car program, customers who order a 2011 Corvette Z06 or ZR1 can choose an option to help assemble their cars” LS7 or LS9 engines at General Motors” Performance Build Center (PBC) in Wixom, Mich.

“Corvette owners are some of the most passionate ““ and most involved ““ enthusiasts in the industry,” said Jim Campbell, U.S. vice president, Chevrolet marketing. “The Corvette Engine Build Experience offers customers an unprecedented opportunity to participate, hands on, in creating the car.”

In addition to building their own engines, Corvette buyers can attend driving school in Arizona or Nevada, take delivery of their vehicles at the National Corvette Museum or watch their vehicles being built at the Corvette assembly plant in Bowling Green, Ky.

The Engine Build Experience is an option with a suggested retail price of $5,800. When a customer selects the PBC option for a 2011 Corvette Z06 or ZR1 and the dealer submits the order to Chevrolet, a special concierge contacts the customer to verify participation and help coordinate arrangements. While travel arrangements to and from Metro Detroit are the customer”s responsibility, the Chevrolet concierge helps schedule the engine build; coordinates the customer”s activities at the Performance Build Center; assists with booking local lodging and meals, and arranges local transportation.

At the PBC, the customer doesn”t merely view the engine”s assembly; he or she builds it under the supervision of and support from skilled technicians. When the engine is assembled, a personalized nameplate is added to the engine next to the builder”s name. It is then sent to the Corvette assembly plant for installation in the customer”s car.

The Corvette Engine Build Experience is possible because of the hand-assembly processes used at the 100,000-square-foot PBC. Technicians hand-build the Corvette Z06″s LS7 7.0L engine, the Corvette ZR1″s 6.2L supercharged LS9 engine and a variation of the Corvette Grand Sport”s LS3 6.2L engine. The PBC incorporates the best practices of low-volume niche manufacturers and the established quality and manufacturing standards at GM to ensure the highest-quality specialized engines.

Like all engines assembled at the PBC, Engine Build Experience engines are covered by Chevrolet”s five year / 100,000-mile transferable powertrain warranty.

The Engine Build experience is the latest program Chevrolet offers for Corvette owners. Other programs include:

* Corvette plant tour, where customers can follow their vehicle down the Bowling Green assembly line
* Corvette Museum delivery, where customers take delivery of their new Corvette at the National Corvette Museum in Bowling Green

The first of the limited 500 2011 Chevrolet Corvette Z06 Carbon Limited Edition models will be auctioned of the highest bidder at Barrett-Jackson in Palm Beach, Fla., on April 3.

“The winning bidder will also be given the unique opportunity to tour GM”s Performance Build Center in Wixom, Mich., home of the hand-built LS7 and LS9 engines found in the Z06 and ZR1 respectively,” GM said in a statement. “The winner will also have the opportunity to watch the car going down the line at the famed Corvette Assembly Plant in Bowling Green, Ky.”

“The Corvette Z06 Carbon will surely be an instant collectible,” said Jim Campbell, U.S. Vice President, Chevrolet Marketing. “For that reason, we see Barrett-Jackson as the premiere venue to sell the first retail Z06 Carbon.”

The auction continues Chevrolet’s tradition of offering exciting sports cars at Barrett-Jackson. At the Scottsdale, Arizona, auction in 2008, the first retail production 2009 Corvette ZR1 sold for $1,000,000. The first retail 2010 Chevrolet Camaro was also sold for $350,000 at a Barrett-Jackson auction last year. A couple weeks back, a limited edition Corvette Z06 (number 427 of 427 produced) brought in $200,000, all of which was donated to the Red Cross relief efforts in Haiti.
