Ever wonder how the new muscle car generation compares to their classic predecessors? So did these people that decided to drag race a 2010 Chevrolet Camaro SS against a 1968 Camaro SS. Both models have the RS packages.

However, the 1968 Camaro SS is not stock. It has a 406 cubic inch V8 with a 5-speed manual and a 3.73:1 posi rear end. The 2010 Chevrolet Camaro SS is stock with some nice looking GM Performance Parts accessories.

There is also a video of the 2010 Camaro SS racing against a 1972 Chevelle big block and a Mustang GT500. 

Oh, and did we mention that all these races take place on a bridge? Very daring.

Finally, an edition of Miscellaneous Thoughts that isn’t focused around GM’s bankruptcy filing. However, we find the first crime (that we’re aware of) committed against the 2010 Chevrolet Camaro and find out that men (which makes up all of egmCarTech’s staff) are twice as likely to fall asleep behind the wheel.

Chevrolet Camaro wheels stolen: Camaro5 forum member Number 3 woke up to a very painful sight this past Sunday when he found the 18-inch wheels on his 2010 Chevrolet Camaro 1LT missing. Apparently thieves stole the wheels overnight and left the Camaro sitting in the driveway. We’re hoping that there is no damage to the exhaust or oil pan. Nonetheless, the perpetrators of this crime shouldn’t be too hard to find since there aren’t many 18-inch wheels for the 2010 Camaro on eBay. – Camaro5 

Men twice as likely to fall asleep while driving: According to a study by insurance company AAMI, men are twice as likely than woman to fall asleep when driving. ”Along with speed and alcohol, fatigue is one of the main contributors to road fatalities and injuries,” AAMI corporate affairs manager Mike Sopinski said in a statement. DeVry to replace GM in S&P 500: Listen – we did our best to avoid GM headlines today so let us slip one in here.  Standard & Poor’s said it will replace General Motors with post-secondary education company DeVry in the S&P 500 index after the close of trading today. – WSJ

In all of the statements released today by General Motors, the now bankrupt automaker said that its new products and technologies are on track. It said that that the New GM will continue with key vehicle launches in 2009 and 2010 including the 2010 Chevrolet Camaro, 2010 Buick LaCrosse, 2010 Cadillac SRX and CTS Sport Wagon, the 2010 Chevrolet Equinox, Cruze and Volt along with the 2010 GMC Terrain.

“Our products are our future, and our lineup of new cars and crossovers are a great foundation for success,” said CEO Fritz Henderson. “The New GM is here to stay, and our brands position us to compete well in profitable segments with vehicles that are second-to-none.”

GM said that it will launch the Chevrolet Volt plug-in hybrid by the end of 2010 and expects to have 14 hybrid models in production by 2012. It said that 65 percent of its vehicles will be alternative-fuel capable by 2014.

“The New GM will become a long-term global leader in the development of fuel-efficient and advanced-technology vehicles,” said Henderson. “In doing so, the New GM will contribute to the development of advanced engineering and manufacturing capabilities in the United States, which are critical to the future of the U.S. economy.”

John Schnatter, otherwise known as “Papa” John, is the founder and chairman of Papa John’s International. He founded the company in 1984 with $1,600 dollars that was needed to pay for the initial equipment for his first store. Today Papa John’s has grown to more than 3,000 stores in over 26 countries and has a market value of $750 million.

Of course, it wasn’t all fun and success for Schnatter. Like every other business started from the ground up, there was a lot of blood, sweat and tear involved.

One of the many sacrifices Schnatter made was giving up his 1972 gold-and-black Z28 Camaro to get the $1,600 he needed to start his pizzeria dreams. Well, Papa John now wants his Camaro back and is willing to give whoever has it, or finds it, a $25,000 reward. Schnatter will be going on a cross-country search for his lost car in another Z28 he purchased a couple years ago (pictured above).

Of course, at this time you might think that this is some clever marketing campaign – and it is. The search for the Papa John’s Z28 Camaro has a website and everything – but at the end of the day, John just wants his baby back (believe us we know the feeling).

Recalling his emotions at the time when selling his original Camaro Z28 Papa John said: “it was so painful I had to look away so I couldn’t see it driving off.”

Many are worried how much say the U.S. government will have in future General Motors’ products since it will be a major shareholder of the new restructured company. Speaking at the Automotive Press Association luncheon, Bob Lutz confirmed that GM will still be making vehicles like the 2010 Chevrolet Camaro, Corvettes and full-size pickup trucks alongside the Chevy Volt and future hybrid models.

Lutz said that the new GM will ditch a lot of huge baggage and will emerge as a “smaller but leaner” company that will remain “a powerhouse” that is very profitable.

Lutz said that production of all the Chevrolet Volt-type vehicles, including the Opel Ampera, will take place in Michigan.

So hopefully, if GM files for bankruptcy on Monday, the Chevrolet Camaro Convertible and the Cadillac CTS Coupe will still make it to the market. Speaking of the CTS Coupe, Lutz said that the car had even impressed Obama’s auto task force. He said the auto task force members were asking when the CTS Coupe is going on sale and how much it would cost.

If you watched the Indy 500 over the weekend, then you most likely saw the 2010 Chevrolet Camaro SS Pace Car take the track. The Indy 500 is no new territory for the Camaro – the model has paced the race give times since its introduction in 1967.

Although, for the first time, GM will not offer a Indy Camaro Pace Car replica for the street model. Each previous model of the Camaro has seen anywhere between 100 to 6,000 replicas of the Indy Camaro Pace Car for collectors.

“The new Camaro has and will pace a lot of races including Indy and Daytona,” Chevrolet spokesman Terry Rhadigan told Inside Line. “In order to keep special editions special, we can’t go to that well too often. Plus, sales of the new car are phenomenal.”

Earlier this year, there were reports about the Chevrolet Camaro Convertible being canceled due to supplier trouble. After that, we heard reports that GM finally worked out its supplier problems and that the Camaro Convertible was back in the product plans and will arrive in early 2010.

Well, 2010 may be too soon. GM spokesman Terry Rhadigan confirmed today that the Camaro Convertible will go into production in early 2011.

“The convertible was never canceled. It was retimed. It will be the first quarter of 2011 for the start of production,” Rhadigan told Automotive News.

Rhadigan said that GM originally planned to introduce the convertible in early 2010. He confirmed that both V6 and V8 models will feature a fabric top.

Jason Drees of Symdon Chevrolet-Pontiac in Wisconsin has just confirmed that GM will be offering a limited-edition 2010 Chevrolet Camaro Bumblebee package, which will be available to order starting June 1. Production of the limited-edition Bumblebee 2010 Camaro will run from June 24 to December.

The package will be available on LT and SS models and will feature the Rally Yellow with black Bumblebee stripes and Transformers badging on wheel centers, sill plates and embroidered console lid.

Is the 2010 Camaro’s popularity causing GM headaches? Apparently, the popularity of the 2010 Chevrolet Camaro is causing GM executives some headaches. There is no doubt that the return of the muscle car has generated a huge fan base. GM has taken 18,000 firm orders for the Camaro and has even added a Saturday shift to Oshawa, Ontario, plant where the car is built. Nonetheless, the Camaro is raising some serious questions in Washington about GM’s product development plans. – Financial Times

Saab confirms three bidders, confident it will get more time to restructure: Saab said today that it is certain that the Swedish courts will give it more time to restructure. It confirmed it has narrowed its list of ten bidders to three. It said that one of the potential remaining bidders will acquire the brand by early summer. – CNNMoney

Chevrolet Cruze Safety Car causes crash at FIA WTTC: During a race, safety cars are responsible to slow the pace of racers during a crash. However, at this weekend’s FIA WTTC race in Pau, France, the Chevrolet Cruze Safety Car was responsible for causing a crash; either way, it did slow down the pace of racers.

When Hennessey Performance Engineering first received their 2010 Chevrolet Camaro SS, they did what every muscle car owner should would do – a burnout followed by a quarter-mile run.

Just before GM decided to kill the Pontiac brand, rumor had it that GM is repositioning Pontiac as a “niche” brand. Susan Docherty, vice president of Buick-Pontiac-GMC, gave us hope that Pontiac may survive and the brand may go back to its performance heritage roots with a new version of the Trans Am Firebird.

Well, that’s not going to happen now is it.

Increasing demand for the 2010 Chevrolet Camaro has prompted GM to add June 29 as a scheduled work week at its Oshawa plant. Originally the week was planned to give Oshawa workers some time-off.

According to a report by the Peterborough Examiner, the flex line workers at the plant will also start working overtime on Saturdays starting in June through August.

The 2010 Chevrolet Camaro is on sale now with prices starting at $22,995 for the V6 Camaro and $30,995 for the V8 2010 Camaro SS.

Lingenfelter, a 30-year old tuning firm owned by John Lingenfelter, has released its tuning package for the 2010 Chevrolet Camaro.

Performance wise Lingenfelter’s tuning package starts off with a supercharged version of the Camaro SS’s 6.2L LS3 V8 making a total of 550-hp, 570-hp or 650-hp. Lingenfelter is also offering a package with a twin-turbo LS7 7.0L production up to 800-hp.

Geely denies copying Rolls-Royce: In yesterday’s Miscellaneous Thoughts we told you how Rolls-Royce is contemplating suing the pants off of Geely for copying their Phantom with the GE. Well, today Geely said that it did not copy Rolls-Royce for its new luxury car and that it is keeping its options open about any legal action from the BMW Group owned brand. – DRIVE

Pontiac not dead… yet: As we all have heard by now, GM is planning to announce the death of Pontiac on Monday. The struggling automaker released a statement today saying that it hasn’t announced any changes to its long-term viability plan. “GM is continuing to review its restructuring plan to go further and faster and best ensure its future success,” GM said in a statement. “Additional information will be released as any decisions are finalized.” – Free Press

Oh, and GM’s plant shutdowns won’t affect the production of the 2010 Chevrolet Camaro – so we’re pretty excited about that. – Inside Line

We’ll be getting our chance to test drive the 2010 Chevrolet Camaro next month, but for now we’ll have to just sit in front of our laptops and drool over pictures of our favorite muscle car.
