In similar fashion to Audi’s S-Line package, Cadillac have announced that they will offer a $2,065+ “Touring” sport and luxury package to non V-series examples of their CTS sedan, coupe and wagon.

The Touring Package, which starts at $2,065, will get you high-intensity discharge headlamps (HIDs), sports suspension, performance wheels and a spoiler. The interior gets an upgrade as well. Additionally, Touring optioned 3.6 models will sport leather wrapped Recaro bucket seats, V-Series aerodynamic center high mounted stop lamp (except Sport Wagon); suede seat inserts, steering wheel and shifter; midnight Sapele wood trim and metal pedals.

Both the 3.0 liter (270 bhp) and 3.6 liter (318 bhp) direct injection sixes remain unchanged, but should you order the Touring package with the 3.6, the grille will be blacked out, the wheels will be 18-19 inches and shod with your choice of high performance summer or all-season rubber.

For 2012 and separate from the Touring Package, all CTS models will come with Bluetooth connectivity as standard with a few new colors: Opulent Blue Metallic (brilliant color, but do they really have to use the word “opulent”?), Black Diamond Tri-coat (attractive, a nearly over the top and sparkly black) and Mocha Steel Metallic (a euphemism for brown). Optional starting this year will be rain sensing wipers and a blind spot monitoring system for those who can’t be bothered with turning their heads.

I was never really a big fan of station wagons. I always thought that, while providing a very utilitarian purpose, they were very boring. Something that those pompous folks from Princeton, New Jersey would drive (seriously, it’s almost like Station Wagon World out there), or a family man’s alternative to the minivan.

However, one day, a General Motors press fleet manager gave me a call asking if I would like to get behind the wheel of a Cadillac CTS-V. Having already driven the Cadillac CTS-V Sedan and the Cadillac CTS-V Coupe, I was curious to know why he was letting me into another CTS-V model. I quickly found out that it was the station wagon version that he was offering up.

Yes, I’ve already tested the Cadillac CTS Sport Wagon, but this time it had a ‘V’ at the end – and no matter what the exterior looked like, that meant a 6.2 liter supercharged V8 pumping out 556-hp was under the hood to keep me satisfied.

2011 Cadillac CTS-V Sport Wagon Specifications:

Base Price: $63,660.

Price As Tested: $67,735.

Drive Type: Rear-wheel-drive.

Engine: 6.2 liter Supercharged V8 – 556-hp at 6,100 rpm / 551 lb-ft of torque at 3,900 rpm.

Transmission: 6-Speed Manual or 6-Speed Automatic.

0 to 60 mph: 4.3 seconds.

Curb Weight: 4,398 lbs.

Fuel-economy (city/highway): 14/19 mpg (manual), 12/18 (auto).

Exterior:

In my opinion, the Cadillac CTS Sport Wagon is already one of the most impressive looking station wagons on the market. The only other models that manage to demand any attention like the CTS Sport Wagon are the Audi A6 Avant, BMW 5-Series Estate, (which has been switched out for the awkward looking 5-Series Gran Turismo in the U.S. market) and that’s really about it.

The only other models that manage to demand any attention like the CTS Sport Wagon are the Audi A6 Avant, BMW 5-Series Estate…

To give it a more aggressive appeal than the base CTS Sport Wagon, the CTS-V Sport Wagon underwent a host of V-Series treatments by Cadillac’s design team.

Included in the bunch of exterior changes is a unique grille that doubles front-end airflow to help enable cooling to the engine. It gets an aggressive front fascia and raised center section of the aluminum hood that provides clearance for the V8 supercharger. Like it’s other CTS-V siblings, the Cadillac CTS-V Sport Wagon flies low on 19-inch forged aluminum wheels available in painted or polished finishes.

The sum of those V model upgrades definitely makes the Cadillac CTS-V Sport Wagon our favorite looking high-performance station wagon.

Interior:

Inside the Cadillac CTS is the same story as the Cadillac CTS-V Sedan and CTS-V Coupe. You’ll find a swarm of upgraded features including LED lighting, hand-cut-and-sewn accents, and performance seats featuring perforated suede microfiber inserts. Like always for V-models, Recaro performance driving seats are optional.

Also in line with the other two CTS-V models, the Cadillac CTS-V Sport wagon gets Obsidian Black accents on the center stack, console, steering wheel and door panels. The production steering wheel and shifter are available in Alcantara, which incorporates the luxurious feel of suede into the driving experience.

Standard features include a navigation system, Bose 5.1 digital surround audio, Bluetooth phone integration, a 40-gigabyte hard drive for storage of music files., iPod/MP3/AUX connectivity and much more.

Most important for station wagon shoppers is the cargo capacity that the CTS Sport Wagon models come with. Just like its slower brother, the CTS-V Sport Wagon offers 25.4 cubic feet of space behind the rear seats and 58 cubic feet with the seats folded – virtually doubling the cargo space of the CTS-V Sedan.

Yes, so far if you’re one of those ‘family man enthusiasts’ the Cadillac CTS-V Sport Wagon is starting to sound like a pretty interesting choice.

Performance:

This is where the Cadillac CTS-V Sport Wagon, like other CTS-V models, sets itself far apart from the competition.

Under the hood is the superb 6.2 liter supercharged V8 unit making 556-hp with a maximum torque of 551 lb-ft. It is the most powerful engine offered in Cadillac’s history, and probably in that of station wagons.

… I felt little, if any, change in the performance of the Cadillac CTS-V Sport Wagon when compared with its Sedan and Coupe siblings.

Of course, in the Cadillac CTS-V Sedan and the Cadillac CTS-V Coupe the performance and acceleration is instant. To find out if it is the same story in the CTS-V Sport Wagon when you’re hauling groceries, a family and other cargo, I gave it a test. By asking a couple of my friends to pack in with a bunch of luggage in the trunk, I figured we could do a bit of a real life simulation.

Hitting the closest highway, I felt little, if any, change in the performance of the Cadillac CTS-V Sport Wagon when compared with its Sedan and Coupe siblings. The Magnetic Ride Control system, Brembo brakes and Michelin Pilot Sport PS2 performance tires kept me mounted to the road, while keeping me confident when taking sharp turns with my passengers screaming.

While on the subject of performance – engineers inside GM say that the drag coefficient of the Cadillac CTS-V Sport Wagon is actually better than the CTS-V Sedan and the CTS-V Coupe – meaning the wagon is actually, although very slightly, still faster than the other two.

Overall:

Cadillac’s V package is apparently a hit no matter what you put it in.

This is an awesome option for the responsible enthusiast. It does double duty with the extra cargo room for functions, activities, or any profession requiring goods to be hauled. But when the kids are off at school? Go ahead and put the pedal to the metal. I promise you’ll make all the minivan dads jealous. I myself am not a family man, nor am I a fan of station wagons, yet I still can’t help but give the CTS-V Sport Wagon the credit it is due. Cadillac’s V package is apparently a hit no matter what you put it in.

What other station wagon out there makes 556-hp from a supercharged V8, runs from 0 to 60 mph in 4.1 seconds, has a 6-speed manual transmission, has Recaro performance seats , a G-meter on the dash and gets its stopping power from Brembo brakes? Not many – in fact, I can’t think of any besides the Cadillac CTS-V Sport Wagon.

For the 2012 model year, the Cadillac CTS Sedan, CTS Coupe and the CTS Sport Wagon will be getting an upgraded V6 engine, a new grille and a new Touring Package edition.

The new 3.6L V6 will give the 2012 Cadillac CTS a total of 318-hp and a peak torque of 275 lb-ft. That’s a 14-hp increase over the current 304-hp V6. Even with the power increase, Cadillac says that the 2012 CTS will keep its EPA estimated fuel-economy of 18/27 mpg (city/highway).

“CTS has established itself as a world-class line of luxury sports cars, but to remain on top, we have to continually make improvements,” said Don Butler, vice president of Cadillac marketing. “The changes for the 2012 model year give customers a fresh take on the CTS’s bold front grille and provide enhanced driving performance without sacrificing fuel economy.”

The Touring Package on the 2012 Cadillac CTS adds an exclusive grille with a dark finish, metal pedals, dark Sapele wood interior trim and sueded seat inserts, steering wheel and shift knob. On the CTS Sedan and Sport Wagon, the package adds chrome door handles. The 3.6L version will have 19-inch polished wheels and Recaro 14-way adjustable performance seats. The 3.0L version will have 18-inch wheels with a pearl-nickel finish.

Other upgrades for the 2012 Cadillac CTS including standard Bluetooth phone connectivity on all models and side blind-zone alert technology available on the CTS Coupe.

It’s an absolute shame that manual gearboxes are far less mainstream than they used to be. As they get more and more exclusive, it seems like manuals will be obsolete before we know it. And even though Cadillac has been doing a great job reinventing its image with great cars such as the most recent CTS, they’ll no longer be offering a manual for the 2012 3.6L V6 CTS.

For the upcoming model year, the Premium and Performance models are only available with a six-speed auto-tragic – I mean, transmission. Of course, all versions of the top of the line CTS-V will still be offered with a manual but as it is rumored, the manual was ditched just because they weren’t selling.

Only 2011 models will still be available with a manual so if you’re looking to get a CTS with a 3.6L V6 and a six-speed manual, better scoop yours up soon! Let’s hope that they’ll bring it back to keep the enthusiasts interested.

Press Release:

Cadillac launches CTS-V Black Diamond Edition

Exclusive paint process enhances richness of CTS-V surface

First use of JDSU’s proprietary SpectraFlair® pigment in North America

Satin Graphite wheels, yellow Brembo brake calipers add style, performance

Recaro seating, Midnight Sapele wood complete interior

DETROIT – Cadillac will offer this spring a Black Diamond Edition of the high-performance CTS-V that comes with a host of popular performance options and an exclusive tri-coat paint, also called “Black Diamond.”

The Black Diamond Edition, available in the CTS-V Sedan, Coupe and Wagon models, will be the first use by an automaker of JDSU’s proprietary SpectraFlair pigment in North America. JDSU, a Milipitas, Calif.,-based optical technology firm, specializes in cutting-edge color solutions for a wide range of markets. Its pigments are used in certain DuPont paints supplied to Cadillac.

In the CTS-V Black Diamond, a dark tri-coat paint is embedded with SpectraFlair Bright Silver pigment. While other luxury makers offer metallic paints, Black Diamond is created through a meticulous process that gives the paint added dimension.

Instead of simply containing small bits of metal, the SpectraFlair pigment in Black Diamond uses aluminum flakes encapsulated in a glass-like substance called magnesium fluoride. The result is a paint that has a diamond-like sparkle as light hits the surface from different angles.

Black Diamond helps Cadillac meet growing demand by luxury buyers for paints that are set apart not just by their color but also by their special effects.

“Auto makers and consumers are looking to differentiate the color black, an ubiquitous color in automotive,” said John Book, Custom Color Solutions product manager at JDSU. “Black Diamond offers the discerning Cadillac customer a special option color that stands out and remains true to their sense of luxury and style.”

In addition to the unique paint, CTS-V Black Diamond comes standard with content that complements its look and feel. The special edition has:

Satin Graphite 19-inch wheels with yellow Brembo brake calipers. These six-piston front, four-piston back brake calipers provide exceptional stopping capabilities.

Recaro seats that feature 14 adjustable elements, French-stitched leather and microfiber suede inserts in the center sections of the cushions and seatbacks.

Midnight Sapele wood trim known for its durability and distinctive grain.

“We’ve already established V-Series as a serious sub-brand for Cadillac,” said Rich Pinto, Cadillac creative designer. “Black Diamond further establishes V-Series in the market as a performance-minded line of vehicles with a luxury twist.”

The CTS-V Black Diamond comes with a suggested retail price, including destination charges, of $69,190 for the manual or $70,490 for the automatic, a $4,850 premium over the CTS-V base price. The CTS-V Black Diamond will be available at U.S. dealerships in March.

The CTS-V Black Diamond Edition joins Cadillac’s award-winning V-Series line of performance luxury vehicles. The CTS-V Sedan, Coupe and Wagon all feature a supercharged 6.2L V8 engine with 556-horspower, Magnetic Ride Control suspension that reads and reacts to the road 1,000 times a second and Michelin Pilot Sport PS2 tire.

General Motors said today that the resale value of the Cadillac CTS is projected to rise as the luxury brand adds the 2011 Cadillac CTS Coupe to the nameplate lineup. According to the July/August estimated from ALG, the resale value for the 2011 CTS Sport Sedan after 36 months is projected to be 55 percent of the initial purchase price, about 9 percentage points higher than the projected resale value for the 2010 model. The projected resale value for the 2011 CTS Sport Wagon, compared to the 2010 model, also has risen about 9 percentage points to 54 percent of the initial purchase price.

The 2011 Cadillac CTS Coupe itself, which began delivery in July, has a projected resale value of 59 percent of its initial price.

“Competitive products, innovative styling and a value driven pricing strategy are contributing to a resurgence of the Cadillac brand,” said Matt Traylen, ALG chief economist and client partner. “The introduction of the Coupe broadens the potential CTS customer base and elevates the Cadillac brand as a whole with emotional appeal, dynamic performance and enthusiast credibility.”

GM said that the SRX crossover, redesigned for the 2010 model year, has experienced a double-digit percentage increase in projected resale value in the past year.

Refresher: The 2011 Cadillac CTS Coupe is powered by a 3.6L direct-injected V6 engine producing 304-hp and 273 lb-ft of torque. Transmission choices include a 6-speed manual or a Hydra-Matic 6L50 6-speed automatic transmission with Driver Shift Control. EPA-estimated fuel-economy comes in at 17/26 mpg (city/highway) when mated to a rear-wheel-drive or all-wheel-drive system with an automatic. With a rear-wheel-drive 6-speed manual, the CTS Coupe averages 17/25 mpg. Prices start at $38,990 for the entry-level model with RWD.

General Motors has announced that the 2011 CTS Sport Sedan and CTS Sport Wagon will offer a new 19-inch all-season tire and wheel package that uses carbon fiber in the tire”s sidewall to provide responsive handling in a range of conditions.

Previously, the 19-inch wheels were only available with summer tires on these models.

GM said that the 19-inch Goodyear Eagle RS-A2 all-season tire is available on the 3.6-L V6 performance and premium models of the 2011 CTS Sport Sedan and CTS Sport Wagon. The option will cost a total of $850 over the standard 18-inch wheel.

The move comes as more consumers demanded larger wheels but wanted the versatility of an all-season tire. The accommodate the new wheels and tires, GM made some suspension changes to the 2011 Cadillac CTS so that performance was maintained.

On the eve of the 2010 New York Auto Show, General Motors invited a select group of press to hang out with Bob Lutz and the Cadillac CTS-V lineup including the CTS-V Sedan, Coupe and Sport Wagon.

The 2010 Cadillac CTS-V Sport Wagon will hit markets later this year and if it makes it to Europe, it will give the Mercedes-Benz E 63 AMG wagon, BMW M5 Touring and the Audi RS6 Estate a run for their money.

We are just two days away from the 2010 New York Auto Show and General Motors today gave us a preview of what is next from its V-Series Cadillac lineup. Joining the Cadillac CTS-V Sedan and the CTS-V Coupe, GM will now expand the V offering with the new 2011 Cadillac CTS-V Sport Wagon.

“The CTS-V Sport Wagon is a natural extension of both the V-Series and the CTS lineup, offering an uncompromising performance car to enthusiasts who want the extra room of a wagon,” said Don Butler, vice president for Cadillac marketing. “The V-Series Sport Wagon is another hallmark of the dramatic presence and power of Cadillac vehicles.”

Power for the CTS-V Sport Wagon will come from the same 6.2L supercharged V8 used on the CTS-V Sedan and CTS-V Coupe. The engine is good for making 556-hp with a maximum torque of 551 lb-ft. The engine is available with a Tremec TR6060 six-speed manual with a dual-disc clutch and a Hydra-Matic 6L90 six-speed automatic with steering wheel-mounted shift controls. Of course, Magnetic Ride Control, Brembo brakes and Michelin Pilot Sport PS2 tires will all be part of the game.

The 2011 Cadillac CTS-V Sport Wagon will hit markets in late 2010, shortly after the CTS-V Coupe.

Press Release:

Cadillac CTS-V Sport Wagon Show Car Debuts At The New York Auto Show

o V-Series performance combined with dramatic CTS Sport Wagon design
o 556-hp (415-kW) supercharged 6.2L V-8
o Six-speed manual or six-speed automatic with steering wheel shift controls
o Magnetic Ride Control, Brembo brakes and Michelin Pilot Sport PS2 tires
o Limited availability beginning in late 2010

NEW YORK ““ Cadillac today unveiled the CTS-V Sport Wagon show car, foreshadowing the next addition to its V-Series performance line. It combines the performance and luxury of the landmark CTS-V Sport Sedan with the dramatic design of the CTS Sport Wagon.

The exterior is finished in Midnight Silver, first seen on the Cadillac Sixteen Concept, and accented by lustrous Liquid Silver-finished wheels and a black chrome finish on the grille”s mesh insert. The rear fascia, upper spoiler and center high-mounted stop lamp are also unique to the show car.

Inside, the CTS-V Sport Wagon show car is trimmed in exclusive black leather with Alcantara accents. The upper section of the instrument panel and upper door panels are covered in the same premium leather, accented with midnight Sapele wood, while the microfiber material and stitching is applied to the lower door panels, pillars, console lid, headliner and steering wheel center. The show car features fine-grain black leather-trimmed Recaro seats with Alcantara seat inserts. The seat inserts are divided in the center and accented with dark gray stitching, while the V-series logo is laser etched into the seatbacks. Obsidian Black accents grace the center stack, console, steering wheel and door panels.

The show car”s bespoke color and trim elements hint at the potential direction of color and trim in future Cadillac models. These elements are not yet intended for production, but represent Cadillac”s desire to gauge customer reaction to new color and trim options.

Production CTS-V Sport Wagon

The CTS-V Sport Wagon will go into production in late 2010, with initial sales in North America, followed by export markets including Europe and the Middle East. The new model rounds out the V-Series offerings, which include all variants of the CTS family”s sedan, coupe and sport wagon body styles.

Like its sedan and coupe stable mates, the CTS-V Sport Wagon is powered by a supercharged 6.2L V-8, which delivers 556 horsepower (415 kW) and is backed by either a six-speed manual transmission or a six-speed automatic. A suite of technical and performance elements complement the powertrain, including Magnetic Ride Control, Brembo brakes and Michelin Pilot Sport PS2 performance tires mounted on 19-inch forged aluminum wheels.

Like the other CTS V-Series models, the Sport Wagon incorporates a unique grille that doubles front-end airflow to help enable its high-performance capabilities. It is also visually identified by an aggressive front fascia and raised center section of the aluminum hood that provides clearance for the supercharger. It rides on 19-inch forged aluminum wheels available in painted or polished finishes.

The rest of the exterior carries the dramatic design of the new CTS Sport Wagon; the details of which include:

* Signature V-shaped deck and tailgate motif
* Large, vertical taillamps with light-pipe technology
* Available panoramic UltraView sunroof.

At the rear is a pair of 3-inch (76 mm) chrome exhaust outlets, which caps a performance dual-exhaust system made of high-grade stainless steel that will maintain a lustrous appearance longer than ordinary stainless.

Of course, cargo capability is a hallmark of wagons and the V-Series Sport Wagon delivers with 25.4 cubic feet (720 liters) of space behind the rear seats and 58 cubic feet (1,644 liters) with the seats folded ““ virtually doubling the available space of the sedan.

Supercharged performance

The 6.2L supercharged V-8 engine powers the CTS-V Sport Wagon ““ the same acclaimed engine found in the V-Series Sedan and Coupe models. Rated at 556 horsepower (415 kW) and 551 lb.-ft. of torque (747 Nm), it is the most powerful engine offered in Cadillac”s history.

The engine features an intercooled Eaton Twin Vortices Series™ (TVS™) supercharger. This unique supercharger design employs twin four-lobe rotors, twisted 160 degrees. Typical superchargers feature three lobes twisted 60 degrees. The fourth lobe and added twist, when combined with unique air inlet and outlet ports, create smoother, more efficient airflow into the engine. In addition to improved overall efficiency, this supercharger has superior noise and vibration characteristics compared to more ordinary designs.

A pair of six-speed transmissions is offered in the CTS-V Sport Wagon ““ a Tremec TR6060 six-speed manual with a dual-disc clutch and a Hydra-Matic 6L90 six-speed automatic with steering wheel-mounted shift controls. The steering wheel-mounted controls require no shift lever movement and allow immediate tap up/tap down gear selection. Performance Algorithm Shifting provides the automotive transmission with a performance-oriented shift pattern during sustained high-performance driving. As with many Cadillac models, the driver needs only to slide the shifter into the manual “gate” to put the transmission into a performance mode.

Torque is channeled through the six-speed transmissions to a high-performance rear axle that features a limited-slip rear differential within a cast iron housing for greater thermal management and asymmetrical half-shafts to smoothly manage the supercharged engine”s incredible torque. The unique design includes alternately sized half-shafts that also help dynamically balance the oscillation of torque from side to side, effectively eliminating “power hop.”

Magnetic Ride Control

The V-Series achieves exceptional levels of road-holding performance, but also maintains the poise of a luxury car in “regular” driving conditions. The technical enabler of this dual-mode driving character is Cadillac”s landmark Magnetic Ride Control. It is standard on the CTS-V Sport Wagon and is the world”s fastest-reacting suspension technology. It uses shocks controlled by advanced magneto-rheological technology, rather than mechanical valves, to greatly accelerate response time and precision.

Electronic sensors at all four wheels literally “read the road” every millisecond, making constant adjustments to damping to create virtually instantaneous and extremely precise control of body motions. This is of particular benefit for a high-performance car because it helps keep the car very composed during hard cornering, acceleration, braking and other dynamic maneuvers.

The Magnetic Ride shocks also enable a broader range of damping control to optimize the ride and handling for all driving conditions. In the CTS-V Sport Wagon, an extra measure of control is offered, with two selectable modes (Tour and Sport), enabling the driver to tailor the suspension for grand touring or more spirited performance driving.

Cadillac pioneered Magnetic Ride Control, bringing it to production first in 2002, following decades of research on magneto-rheological science. Today, the technology appears only on a short roster of the world”s most elite vehicles, including Cadillac V-Series models, the Escalade luxury SUV and the STS and DTS luxury sedans.

Brembo brakes and Michelin Pilot Sport PS2 tires

The CTS-V Sport Wagon incorporates sophisticated braking and tire systems, in partnership with two companies renowned for high-performance technology: Brembo and Michelin. Brembo brakes are at all four corners and include powerful, six-piston calipers in the front and four-piston calipers in the rear.

Large vented rotors enable strong initial braking force while optimizing heat resistance and eliminating fade. The brake rotors from Brembo are manufactured with “dual-cast” technology that combines cast iron and aluminum, resulting in superior performance and weight reduction.

The CTS-V Sport Wagon also includes an electric parking brake, which allows for optimal dead pedal placement, which is important for high-performance driving.

Michelin partnered with Cadillac engineers to develop an exclusive Pilot Sport PS2 tire specifically engineered for the CTS-V. The tires support high levels of grip in track conditions, while also affording excellent performance on the road.

Comfort, style and technology

The interior of the CTS-V Sport Wagon is shared with the sedan, including streamlined instrumentation, LED lighting and hand-cut-and-sewn accents.

The CTS-V Sport Wagon production model will come standard with performance seats featuring perforated sueded microfiber inserts designed to hold the driver and front passenger in place during cornering. Recaro performance driving seats are optional and provide excellent support for spirited driving. These 14-way adjustable performance seats include pneumatic bolster controls in the seat cushions and backrests.

Complementing the performance seating are a thick steering wheel and a gauge package designed for easy, at-a-glance reference during performance driving. Large instruments have bold readouts, including an LED-lit “tracer” function in the tachometer that flashes as the engine nears the red line. The gauge layout includes a boost gauge and a lateral acceleration display.

Obsidian Black accents grace the center stack, console, steering wheel and door panels. The production steering wheel and shifter are available in Alcantara, providing the luxurious character of suede. These accents are elegant to the touch and aid the driver during support high-performance driving. Just like every CTS, the V-Series includes a hand-stitched instrument panel, door trim and center console.

Leading-edge infotainment features extend to the V-Series. Standard features include an advanced navigation system with a deployable screen, Bose 5.1 digital surround audio, factory-installed Bluetooth phone integration and a 40-gigabyte hard drive that allows the customer to store a large library of music files. The system uploads files via a USB port or the in-dash DVD/CD drive and allows stored tracks to be searched and selected through the radio controls.

Cadillac will forever indebted to two individuals by the names of Wayne Cherry and Kip Wasenko; those are the individuals who designed the CTS, and in turn put Cadillac back on the map, making GM”s luxury brand one to be taken seriously in the segment once again. The duo”s stealth aircraft-inspired “Art and Science” design language continues to be a staple at Cadillac. In hopes to further reinvent the brand and expand its offerings, Cadillac has introduced the CTS Sport Wagon. Before you cringe in disgust at the thought, the sharp-edged rear-end, shiny wheels, and sharp red paint make this wagon one of the sharpest looking on the market, at least in our comparison.

Being the first Cadillac station-wagon offered to the U.S. market that is not a hearse, the CTS Sport Wagon offers a practical solution to pet-lovers, campers, and travelers alike.

Exterior:

“It”s a taut, sleek design,” said Clay Dean, global design director for Cadillac. “The drama of the sedan is amplified in the wagon, as the centerline cue that is part of the exterior and interior is more prominent and plays a stronger role in defining the design at the rear of the vehicle.”

While most of the CTS Sport Wagon borrows its look from the sedan, the rear of the vehicle is where the Sport Wagon establishes its own identity. Most sedans give up a certain amount of aesthetic appeal when being converted to a station wagon, however, the CTS Sport Wagon pulls it off almost seamlessly. This is accomplished by blending the roofline of the CTS Sport Wagon with the roof edges, allowing an unobstructed placement of cross bards and creating a fin-line effect at the trailing edges of the rear panels.

Overall, when compared to German rivals in the segment (including the BMW 5-Series Sport Wagon, the Mercedes-Benz E-Class Estate and the Audi A6 Avant), the CTS Sport Wagon really stands out with its sharp creases and downright aggressive styling.

Interior:

By its very nature, a station-wagon is all about the interior and the cargo space that it offers. The front of the cabin is a carbon copy of the CTS sedan, so the fact that you”re driving a wagon might not be readily apparent; until you turn your attention rearward. Though it shares almost the same exterior dimensions as the sedan, the interior carrying capacity is nearly doubled, offering 25 cubic feet (720 liters) of space behind the rear seats, and 53.4 cubic feet (1,523 liters) with the rear seats folded down.

The rear cargo area also contains an integrated cargo management system that stows neatly under the floor when not in use. The standard power liftgate is operated by push-button and can be programmed to lift to a specific height.

Depending on what trim-level you purchase, you can opt for a 40-gigabyte internal hard drive, pop-up navigation screen, a large available panoramic rear sunroof, heated and ventilated seats and a rear-entertainment system.

Performance:

As mentioned above, one will hardly notice a difference between the front exterior/interior of the wagon and that of the sedan, and the same holds true for performance.

The base 2010 Cadillac CTS Sport Wagon, starting at $38,265, is powered by a 3.0L direct-injected V6 making 270-hp and 223 lb-ft of torque. Mated to a Hydra-Matic 6-speed automatic transmission, the 3.0L equipped models manage an EPA-estimated highway fuel-economy of 28 mpg.

GM also offers the CTS Sport Wagon with an optional 3.6L direct-injected V6 making 304-hp and 273 lb-ft of torque (our test-model); however, pricing for the trim-levels carrying the more powerful engine start at $43,365. The extra money for the 34-hp might be somewhat wasted however, as GM says both engines balance performance and efficiency while operating on regular unleaded gas; many of the vehicle’s competitors require premium fuel. EPA estimated fuel-economy for the 3.6L V6 model comes in at 18/26 mpg (city/highway). We managed to average 17.6 mpg throughout our week long test.

The CTS Sport Wagon features advanced chassis technology in the form of Cadillac”s StabiliTrak electronic chassis control system, integrating the car”s standard four-channel ABS with the full-function traction control, hydraulic brake assist and engine drag control systems. Also available on the Sport Wagon, as on the sedan, is the optional all-wheel drive system.

The CTS Sport Wagon may get an even more powerful engine. Bob Lutz had confirmed this past November that GM planned to expand its CTS-V lineup to include the Sport Wagon, but nothing has developed since.

Overall:

Practicality, sedan-like performance, and a very competitive price tag – those are all the things that make the 2010 Cadillac CTS Sport Wagon a desirable option on any station wagon shopper’s list.

Here is some interesting tidbit we found on the next-generation of General Motors’ performance vehicles that the Detroit automaker would prefer hadn’t gone public. During a presentation to the Automotive Press Association on global platforms Thursday afternoon, Grant Thornton LLP’s director James Ricci outlined GM’s rear-wheel-drive model plans.

Ricci said that GM’s Alpha platform will replace the Sigma platform under the Cadillac CTS sedan in 2013 and will also find its way under the next-generation Chevrolet Camaro due out in 2014 as a 2015 model. He said that GM would discontinue the Cadillac CTS Coupe and CTS Sport Wagon at that time.

The Alpha platform will also underpin Cadillac’s 3-Series rival, internally known as the ATS. The model will be slotted below the CTS in price. GM is already working on a coupe prototype of the ATS and rumor has it that there will possibly be a wagon version in the works as well.

The Cadillac ATS is due out in 2014, same time as the next Chevrolet Camaro.

Cadillac quietly cut prices on its new 2010 Cadillac CTS Sport Wagon earlier this month to make the model more competitive with its SRX crossover.

“People would come in, see the price of the SRX and lose interest in the wagon,” John Howell, vice president in charge of Cadillac products worldwide said.

Prices for the base 3.0L V6 rear-wheel-drive model now start at $39,150 including shipping, down from $40,485. The Cadillac SRX starts at $34,155. A loaded AWD version comes in a little over $50,000.

Today, CARandDRIVER is reporting that Bob Lutz has confirmed a production CTS-V Sport Wagon, bringing more validity to the report.

An excerpt from CARandDRIVER:

“You know what”s really going to get you guys [on board with wagons] is the CTS-V wagon.”
