Car and Driver loves doing special features. So they’re back with their latest one for the 2012-year: the annual Lightning Lap. The competition is to compare some of the most critically acclaimed cars as of recent.

Taking place at Virginia’s International Raceway, the C/D team will compare a series of cars organized in various price classes and see who’s the fastest. The diversity includes and are not limited to the latest Volkswagen Jetta GLI, the Corvette ZR1, and for the first time, SUVs like the BMW X5 M and the hot new Jeep Grand Cherokee SRT-8.

It really needs no explanation. And to make things more interesting, they even provided a video!

Hamann is back with another BMW X5 modification package – known as the Flash Evo M (for the BMW X5 M). The bodykit and power upgrades are much more aggressive than any other X5 package we’ve seen from Hamann.

With the Hamann Flash Evo M, the BMW X5 M gets a new front spoiler with LED daytime running lights, large air intakes, a carbon fiber bonnet, side sill bars, fender extensions, side wings for the wheel arches, a rear spoiler, roof spoiler and carbon fiber mirror heads. A new sport exhaust system with center-mounted dual-pipes is also integrated into the new diffuser. The Hamann Flash Evo M rides on 22- or 23-inch alloy wheels.

Power upgrades Flash Evo M increase the X5 M’s output to 601-hp with a maximum torque of 575 lb-ft. Hamann is also offering its HM 670 upgrade, which brings output to 660-hp and a peak torque of 700 lb-ft. To enhance performance, Hamann is also offering a suspension upgrade, which lowers the X5 M by 30 mm.

Press Release:

HAMANN turns the BMW X5 M (E70) into an all-wheel sports car Flash Evo M

When you take your car for styling and tuning to HAMANN -Motorsport in Laupheim, Germany, the end result will always be amazing. This also occurred when customizing the BMW X5 M and turning it into the HAMANN Flash Evo M. Whether you need a bodykit, light alloy wheels, increased performance or visual enhancement of the interior – HAMANN makes it possible.

The BMW X5 M rolls off the assembly-line already with many exceptional attributes that give it a sense of a sports car. HAMANN dresses up this genre, adding the newly developed Flash Evo M-Bodykit. From now on, a striking front spoiler will be fitted with two or four integrated LED daytime running lights, large air intakes that supply the engine as well as the brake system with fresh air. The carbon bonnet presents itself as a perfect match and contributes with its additional air inlets and outlets to optimize the temperature inside the engine compartment. Side sill bars connect the massive fender extensions and give the X5 M a considerably higher presence. The two central tailpipes of the sport exhaust system are integrated into the diffuser that is installed into the rear spoiler. The carbon roof spoiler adds to the necessary downforce. Even the exterior mirror heads present themselves in a stylish black carbon fibre.

Upon request, several 22 or 23 inch light alloy wheels amplify effectively the sporty appearance of the HAMANN Flash Evo M and skilfully fill in the wide wheel housings. The exclusive DESIGN UNIQUE FORGED “ANODIZED” rim, available in 23 inch with matt black anodized spokes, gives it a truly sporty appearance. The special forging technique applied makes the rim super light but at the same time offers a very high bearing load.

By using progressively wound suspension springs, HAMANN is able to lower the center of gravity of the BMW X5 M by 30 mm. This emphasizes even more the sporty appearance of the Flash Evo M bodykit.

HAMANN offers two performance improvement systems: First, the ECU is optimized by removing the factory-installed Vmax restriction of 250 km/h. Then, power is increased from 408 kW/555 hp and 680 Nm torque to an impressive 449 kW/610 hp and a torque of 780 Nm.

For an extra kick, HAMANN supplies the HM 670 sports kit. In addition to the optimization of the ECU, a rear sports muffler and catalyst replacement pipes are being used. This way, between 1500 and 5650 RPM, the torque is increased to 950 Nm. According to the data sheet, 493 kW/670 hp are also available and ensure that the HAMANN Flash Evo M can reach a top speed of 300 km/h.

Stopping at these speeds requires additional safety, for which HAMANN has developed a high-performance brake system, using 405 mm diameter brake discs in front and 340 mm diameter brake discs at the rear. 6-pot callipers provide the delay at the front axle, while 4-pot callipers do their work at the rear axle. Steal flex brake lines prevent the dreaded fading during high stresses.

When checking out the interior, the first thing one will notice is the HAMANN airbag sport steering wheel and the speedometer, indicating a top speed of 320 km/h. But this is only the beginning: Upon request, the in-house saddlery shop can provide you with two-coloured, quilted leather with decorative stitching and Alcantara, as interior finish. To round it all off, an interior package is available with appliqué made of visible carbon fibre and a stainless steel sill plate with an illuminated HAMANN logo. The feet of the driver may rest on pedals and a foot rest available in optional silver or black anodized aluminium. HAMANN floor mats and a trunk mat top off the luxurious appearance.

Masonry, a Swiss tuning company, has designed a new tuning pack for BMW, the first pack they have done for this model.

Their opening gambit with the German giant is quite comprehensive, covering both the performance and the style aspects of this crossover. Wide fenders and side skirts push the X5″s frame out by 150 mm, and a new front spoiler adds onto a carbon fiber hood, with this hood allowing for increased air intake. The back also sees an upgrade: a 4-exhaust, stainless-steel set of exhausts works with a new carbon fiber diffuser and spoilter to push the car down and leave an impression.

The body may make an impression when the car is at a standstill, but when it runs its speed will leave an even stronger reminder of how stong a job Masonry did on its initial BMW tuning job. Increases of 127 hp and 200 lb-ft make it possible for this big car to get from 0-60 in 4.2 seconds- as fast as an Audi RS6.

Masonry has no intentions of ending their BMW tuning jobs here, and have already hinted at plans for modifying the X6 and 7 series. If their plans for those cars are anywhere near as dramatic as their plans for this one, those modifications will deserve the anticipation they are now receiving.

G-Power, a German tuning company, released last year a tuning package for the X5 M; at the time, they called it their “small” Typhoon body kit. Now, with the launch of the full Typhoon package, their full vision has become clear: up from the 555 HP available in a stock X5 M and the 600 on the small Typhoon, this full tuning kit has an almost unbelievable 725 HP. These increases are made possible by optimized air flow allowing for better cooling, making both more power and torque. The air flow allows the redone ECU, sport catalytic converters, and exhaust manifold to decrease back pressure.

To make all of this performance usable, the transmission was buffed up to support 1000 Nm; the standard X5 M puts out 680 Nm, and the Typhoon puts out 890 656 lb-ft. Clearly, then, G-Power feels there may be more power to be had from this car- they worry that 0-60 time of 4.2 seconds and a top speed of over 185 won”t be enough.

The tuner willing to push the car even further, though, would need a pretty penny: in addition to the X5 M”s stock asking price of $126,000, G-Power”s kit will set them back over $23,000 more.
Press Release:

G-POWER X5 M TYPHOON – with 725 hp, pass the 300 km/h mark even faster!

First there was the “small” TYPHOON body kit; now here comes the “big” TYPHOON wide body kit for the BMW X5 M. Thanks to optimised air flow and up to 15 % more cooling, the G-POWER body kit clears the way for an increase in the base output of the 4.4 l V8 bi-turbo power unit of 170 hp to no less than 725 hp.

Muscular flared wheel arches plus distinctive skirts and spoilers on the front and rear trimmed for maximum aerodynamic efficiency define the look of the G-POWER X5 M TYPHOON. The body kit in original equipment quality made from PU RIM was developed by G-POWER designers using state-of-the-art CAD technology. The base vehicle was fully digitised in-house with a 3D scanner.

The elegant sweep of the flared G-POWER wheel arches front and rear – which, of course, come with perfectly matched inner panels – give the X5 M seven centimetres more width, making room for extra-wide 23-inch wheels and tyres. The top-end version comes with G-POWER SILVERSTONE RS forged wheels developed specifically for the TYPHOON, with 11Jx23 format up front and 12Jx23 on the rear. Each corner sports 315/25 ZR 23 high-performance rubber from development partner Michelin, delivering optimum traction and sporty handling that is further enhanced by the G-POWER sports suspension and a 30 mm lower ride height.

Together with the flared wheel arches, the face of the exclusive SUV is distinguished largely by the G-POWER TYPHOON front skirt designed entirely in-house. The large air intakes not only improve overtaking prestige, they also guarantee optimum cooling of the engine and front brakes. Moreover, design refinements succeeded in reducing aerodynamic lift on the front axle.

The sills on the TYPHOON serve not only as aerodynamically efficient transitions between the front and rear flares, they also house five LED units on each side that illuminate the ground on each side of the vehicle when activated either by remote control or by pulling the door handle. Along the upper surfaces, stainless steel inserts integrate a G-POWER logo also illuminated in blue.

Like the front section, the rear skirt on the TYPHOON is conceived to completely replace the production-standard bumper. The diffuser has an imposing impact on the rear view, as do the two distinctive 114 mm tailpipes on the G-POWER stainless steel sports silencer. Together with the spoiler fixed to the rear hatch, which adds visual length to the roofline, minimal lift has been achieved at the rear axle, too. A further example of the detailed refinements in the design of the G-POWER TYPHOON Wide Version for the BMW X5 M is the four-part underbody panelling.

In keeping with the dynamic look, G-POWER offers a mighty power unit for the BMW X5 M. Thanks to the enlarged air intakes in the front skirt and the outlet vents in the bonnet, there is an improved flow of cooling air to the radiator and oil cooler at the front of the vehicle, increasing cooling performance by around 15%. This establishes the basis for a thermally balanced performance increase achieved by electronic optimisation developed by G-POWER and involving changes to the engine mapping including removal of the top speed limiter. On the exhaust side, a fully stainless steel G-POWER system delivers the necessary reduction in exhaust back pressure featuring a set of sport catalytic converters and most important a set of flow optimized G-POWER exhaust manifolds connecting the turbochargers. In addition, optimised connection pipes have also been installed between the turbochargers and the cylinder heads to minimise pressure and thermodynamic losses. The outcome is an additional 170 hp, taking the overall output to an impressive 725 hp at 6,000 r/min and 890 Nm of torque at 1,500 r/min. The maximum torque is electronically limited. In combination with a reinforcement of the standard BMW X6 M automatic transmission a torque maximum of 1000 Nm can be provided.

The enormous potential of the G-POWER modified BMW V8 bi-turbo power unit endows the X5 M with on-the-road performance that catapults it into the elite group at the very top of this vehicle class. The sprint from 0 to 100 km/h lasts only 4.2 seconds, with the top speed at over 300 km/h.

G-POWER has refined the interior of the BMW X5 M with exclusive accessories like an ergonomically designed sports steering wheel, a G-POWER speedometer and fine carbon-fibre trim on the side panels, centre console and dashboard. Further preferences can be fulfilled with exclusive interiors in all shades of leather and Alcantara.

Pricing for the TYPHOON aerodynamics package starts at € 12.185.00,– plus installation by G-POWER in Autenzell. The price for the 23-inch G-POWER SILVERSTONE RS or EDITION wheel set with MICHELIN tyres is € 8,865.55,–. The G-POWER power boost to 725 hp including complete exhaust system and modifications to the turbocharger installation is available for € 18,000.00,–.

A couple days before BMW officially unveiled the X5 M, tuner G-Power revealed its 525-hp V8 G-Power Typhoon based on the standard X5. Well, G-Power has now unveiled a new modification package for the X5 M and the X6 M.

The G-Power Widebody-kit Typhoon clears the way for the X5 M and X6 M’s 4.4L V8 twin-turbo for an extra 45-hp. That brings the total output to 600-hp with a maximum torque of 516 lb-ft. The modification allows the G-Power X5 M and the X6 M Typhoon to go from 0-62 mph in 4.5 seconds with a top speed of 186 mph. The standard 555-hp X5 M and X6 M go from 0-60 mph in 4.5 seconds.

Other than the power upgrades, G-Power is offering body kits that make both models look much more aggressive than their standard versions.

Press Release:

G-POWER X5 M and X6 M TYPHOON with 600 hp and over 300 km/h V/max

G-POWER after HIGH SPEED world champion also “world champion of development”?

The new G-POWER equipment package for the BMW X5 M and BMW X6 M is available! As soon as the two models based on the M-series have been delivered to its first customers, G-POWER already offers an entire refining kit for the BMW X5 M und X6 M an. Availability? Immediately!

Derived from the G-POWER Widebody-Kit TYPHOON, G-POWER presents an excitingly styled aerodynamics pack made of full carbon which renders 15 percent more cooling power to the 4.4l V8 BI-Turbo engine in the BMW X5 M and X6 M and therefore clears the way for increasing the basic performance by 45 hp to altogether 600 hp.

G-POWER X5 M and X6 M TYPHOON

600 hp / 441 KW at 6,000 r.p.m (+ 45 PS / 33 kW)
700 Nm from 2,300 r.p.m (+ 20 Nm)
V-max: more than 300 km/h
0-100 km/h: 4.5s
0-200 km/h: 16.2s
Aerodynamics pack TYPHOON S: from € 6,990 (net price)

The first thing catching your eye with M-models modified by G-POWER, is the front skirt made of full carbon which entirely replaces the original component part. The front skirt with the striking air inlets derives from the G-POWER Widebody-Kit TYPHOON RS and turns the visual appearance of the BMW X5 M and X6 M significantly more aggressive. Due to the elaborate design, the aerodynamic lifting forces at the front axles could be also reduced. A further highlight is the G-POWER TYHPOON bonnet made of Kevlar hybrid or full carbon which ensures an improved removal of the hot exit air from both turbo chargers out of the engine compartment by a central Venturi engine compartment ventilation for driving and 2 lateral ABS-grids for the standard ventilation. Moreover, the new face of the BMW X5 M and X6 M are formed in a subtle way.

Moreover, the G-POWER full carbon add-ons for the serial side skirts perfectly and harmonically combine the visual intersection between the wheel houses. With the X5 M, these contain forged, one-part G-POWER SILVERSTONE EDITION aluminium wheels in the dimensions 11×23 and 12×23 inches, whereas the X6 M is equipped with three-part G-POWER RS forged wheel in the same dimension (if desired, also available in 22 inches). As far as the tyres are concerned, G-POWER counts on balance and uses 315/25 ZR 23 high performance tyres by its development partner Michelin for optimal traction and dynamic handling which are further enhanced by the G-POWER sports spring set and a lowering by additional 30 mm.

The BMW X5 M and X6 M are both perfected by the G-POWER full carbon diffuser which elegantly emphasises the 4 x 100 mm end pipes with G-POWER logos. Optionally, also a G-POWER full stainless steel end muffler is available. It enhances the 4 x 100 mm end pipes also with the patented DEEPTONE sound which is so typical for G-POWER. Exclusively for the BMW X6 M, a rear spoiler made of full carbon which additionally reduces the downforce at the rear axle can be optionally ordered with the rear diffuser.

But the appearance of the BMW X5 M and X6 M is not only visually improved by the G-POWER TYPHOON S aerodynamics pack. Due to the enlarged air inlets at the front skirt and the exit air outlets at the bonnet, more cold air reaches the water coolers and oil coolers at the car front. Therefore, the cooling performance improves by 15 percent. This is the basis for a thermally healthy performance enhancement by an electronic optimisation developed by G-POWER which is based on changing the engine characteristics and removing the V-max limitation. Therefore, an additional 45 hp are generated and the overall performance rises to mighty 600 hp at 6,000 r.p.m and 700 Nm torque from 2,000 r.p.m.

The enormous performance potential of the BMW V8 BI-Turbo engines modified by G-POWER empower the two “Off-road cars” with driving performances catapulting them into the top group of their vehicle class: the acceleration from 0 to 100 km/h only takes 4.5 seconds. After 16.2 seconds, already 200 km/h are achieved. The maximum speed is more than 300 km/h.

G-POWER enhances the interior of the BMW X5 M and X6 M with exclusive accessories such as a ergonomically formed sports steering wheel, a speedometer in G-POWER design and noble carbon covers for the side linings, central console and dashboard. Further wishes can be fulfilled with exclusive interiors in all possible leather- and ultra suede colours.

The aerodynamics pack TYPHOON S can be obtained from € 6,990 plus assembly at the G-POWER premises in Autenzell. The price for the SILVERSTONE RS or EDITION wheel set with MICHELIN tyres is € 8,865.55. The G-POWER full stainless steel end muffler costs € 3,021 and the G-POWER performance enhancement up to 600 hp can be obtained for € 4,701.68.

Before BMW unveiled the 555-hp X5 M, tuner G-Power revealed a 525-hp V8 G-Power Typhoon based on the X5. In an effort not to be left behind by the OEM X5 M, G-Power has now unveiled an even more powerful X5 – known as the X5 G-Power Typhoon RS.

With the help of a G-Power SK III RS supercharger, the Typhoon RS produces at total of 625-hp with a maximum torque of 516 lb-ft. That allows it to go from 0 to 62 mph in just 4.5 seconds with a top speed of 177 mph. The standard BMW X5 also goes from 0 to 62 mph in 4.6 seconds with a top speed electronically limited to 155 mph.

The performance kit by G-Power also uses a high-performance exhaust system, racing catalysts and rear mufflers, and a large-volume aluminum charge air cooling system at the front.

Visual changes remain subtle from the original G-Power Typhoon.

BMW has announced the pricing details on its two latest additions – the 2010 BMW X6 M and the 2010 BMW X5 M. The 2010 BMW X6 M will have a starting price tag of $88,900 while the 2010 X5 M will start at $85,400.

Both M edition SUVs are powered by a 4.4L twin-turbocharged V8 producing 555-hp with a maximum torque of 500 lb-ft. That allows the X6 M and the X5 to go from 0 to 60 mph in 4.5 seconds. Both models feature an M tuned version of Dynamic Performance Control combined with xDrive, large intakes, a rear diffuser with quad tailpipes, M side grille and 20-inch alloy wheels. Inside, the X6 M and the X5 M get M sport seats, an M shifter, steering wheels with paddle shifting, red needle gauges and Merino Leather.

We’ve all been wondering who is actually going to buy these high-performance behemoths. BMW says it expects most buyers to upgrade from an M5 or M6. Additionally BMW expects potential customers who have previously owned an AMG or Porsche Cayenne Turbo SUV in the past.

Sales will begin later this fall. Orders will begin later next month.

That very engine will allow you to take all the xDrive all-wheel-drive goodness from 0 to 60 mph in just 4.5 seconds. Not to mention, that’s faster than the BMW M3 Coupe which BMW says goes from 0 to 60 mph in 4.7 seconds.

For those of you that would rather have all that power in a sedan or a coupe – just wait until BMW throws the 555-hp 4.4L twin-turbocharged V8 in the next-generation M5 and M6. That should definitely give the 2009 Cadillac CTS-V, Audi RS6, 2010 Jaguar XFR/XKR and the new 2010 Mercedes-Benz E63 AMG a run for their money.

THE NEXT CHAPTER IN THE STORIED HISTORY OF BMW M

All-New BMW X6 M and BMW X5 M Make World Debuts in 2009

Woodcliff Lake, NJ ““ April 5, 2009… The modern, sustainable legacy of BMW M GmbH began in 1985 when engineers placed the snarling, race-bred inline-6 engine from the M1 supercar into the production BMW 5 Series sedan, reworked the suspension and brakes, and created the first M5. Through this industry-first combination of attributes, the M5 redefined the capabilities of a sedan with levels of power, precision, balance, and linear control never before imaginable. Since then, finding new ways to expand the boundaries of what is possible with existing BMW models has been the singular purpose of the craftsmen at BMW M. Now the BMW X5 M and the BMW X6 M are the first all-wheel-drive models to offer the remarkable performance, dynamic driving experience, athletic design, and premium quality of a BMW M product.

Both models are powered by a newly-developed 4.4-liter V8 M engine delivering 555 hp at 6,000 rpm and 500 lb-ft of torque from 1500 to 5,650 rpm. This new M engine is the world’s first with a pulse-tuned exhaust manifold encompassing both rows of cylinders combined with high-performance twin-scroll twin turbo technology.

For the X5 M and X6 M, engineers at BMW M pushed the capabilities of BMW”s intelligent xDrive all-wheel-drive system and the Dynamic Performance Control system to manage the power and performance potential of these two new vehicles. The special M suspension includes Adaptive Drive and newly-developed Servotronic power steering. These features combine to push the limits of what was previously possible with a sports-oriented vehicle, and guarantee driving behavior characteristic of a BMW M product: incredible stability and precisely controlled steering qualities abound throughout the performance envelope.

The BMW X5 M and BMW X6 M set new standards of acceleration, lateral grip, steering response, balance, and stopping power among high-performance activity vehicles. Both models accelerate to 60 mph from a standstill in 4.5 seconds and feature impressive delivery of power from the V8 twin-turbo engine which provides maximum torque of 500 lb-ft from 1,500 and 5,650 rpm. From a handling standpoint, both vehicles are notable for superb balance through careful tuning of xDrive, Dynamic Performance Control, and Dynamic Stability Control with M Dynamic Mode for linear buildup of cornering forces. These capabilities place the performance of the X5 M and X6 M on par with the performance of other recent BMW M vehicles.

The athletic character and amazing performance abilities of the BMW X5 M and X6 M result from levels of development never before applied to this type of vehicle. As it did when creating the original M5, BMW M has once again shown that applying new technologies and innovations to a solid BMW production vehicle type will produce startling performance and an exhilarating drive. Both of these new models offer capabilities and dynamic driving experiences which are quite unique, and promise to provide thrills from everyday traffic to the race track.

Exterior Design: BMW M heritage reflecting function, purpose, and style.

The outstanding potential of both models is communicated clearly in their looks and design, their performance-bred heritage presented convincingly by the common design of the front end with its large air intakes.

The hood, front air dam, and headlights are virtually identical on the BMW X5 M and X6 M. Both models feature special gills in the front fenders, as well as model- specific 20-inch light-alloy wheels. The signs of distinction of BMW M are presented in individual style at the rear, confirming the athletic character of each model. The rear diffuser on each model communicates a particularly powerful presence, and the quad tailpipes of the exhaust system are again a signature of BMW M”s masterful work.

Compared with the standard BMW X5 and BMW X6, the body-color surface area on the side skirts are designed to place greater emphasis on their road-going orientations. On both models the body designs fulfill major functions in terms of aerodynamics and the carefully controlled flow of cooling air.

The first modern turbocharged M engine: twin scroll twin turbo technology with a patented exhaust manifold.

Using BMW”s innovative, 4.4L reverse-flow V8 engine with High Precision Direct Injection and twin turbochargers as a basis, the new M engine introduces twin- scroll twin turbochargers and patented exhaust manifold technologies to achieve outstanding thrust and pulling force, while preserving the most compact dimensions possible. Two low-mass twin-scroll turbochargers are positioned together with the catalytic converters in the “V” section between the two banks of cylinders. By reversing the flow of gases through the engine from traditional arrangements, the intake and exhaust ducts are shortened and widened. The result is that pressure losses on the exhaust side are minimized.

The goals: virtually eliminate turbocharger lag while maximizing combustion efficiency and power output. Tremendous power and performance are delivered by the engine in the BMW X5 M and BMW X6 M through a new design and construction principle. The new M V8 engine with twin-scroll twin turbo technology uses a single exhaust manifold with tuned-length runners, incorporating both cylinder banks and connecting cylinders in carefully-selected pairs. This configuration, patented by BMW M and known as Cylinder-bank Comprehensive Manifold (CCM), offers lightning-quick response, a linear build-up of engine power, and a broad, consistent torque curve by feeding each of the twin turbochargers with a “charge pulse” at approximately every 90 degrees of crankshaft rotation, rather than the more traditional “irregular schedule” of charging.

The managed flow of exhaust gas provided by the CCM ensures high-velocity flow of combustion gases. The appropriate separation of exhaust gas flow from different cylinders is maintained until the gas reaches the turbine wheel, spooling the two twin-scroll turbochargers without back-pressure. With maximum boost pressure of 1.5 bar (21 psi), the use of twin-scroll twin turbo technology and the CCM exhaust manifold allows complete exploitation of the benefits of turbocharging.

Immediate response and remarkable thrust characterize the new V8 twin- turbocharged engine from BMW M GmbH. The impressive onset of power is accompanied by unique, engaging engine sounds that accentuate the quick- revving characteristics with the dynamic acoustic effect typical of a BMW M product. The sounds are always civilized, but transform from relatively calm to extraordinarily intense as the boost and revs build from idle. Reflecting the tremendous power of the engine, the turbocharged M V8 is equipped with an advanced cooling system developed specifically for the two new models. One notable feature in this context is the presence of two high-capacity water-to-air intercoolers which consistently optimize performance under the most demanding driving conditions. An aluminum oil sump exclusive to BMW M with a special finned surface guarantees optimum cooling at all times even under an extremely demanding style of driving.

The turbocharged M V8 engine develops its outstanding power with remarkable efficiency. In addition to BMW”s High Precision Direct Injection, both the BMW X5 M and the BMW X6 M are equipped with a range of technologies from BMW”s EfficientDynamics engineering strategy. These include on-demand control of the electric fuel pump, an on-demand compressor for the air conditioner, and a flow- controlled supply of hydraulic fluid to the Active Roll Stabilization system. By operating these features specifically on demand, energy waste is minimized. The engine fulfills the requirements of the US LEV II standard as well as the EU5 requirements in Europe.

M Sports Automatic and M shift paddles on the steering wheel

Featured for the first time on a BMW M model, the 6-speed M Sports Automatic transmission enhances the high-performance character of the BMW X5 M and the BMW X6 M through its instantaneous response, direct connection to the engine, and a high degree of shifting comfort. The new M Sports Automatic is commanded by an electronic selector on the center console and offers the driver not only the Drive mode, but also Sport and M Manual modes for absolute control of gear selection.

Aluminum pull-style paddles on the steering wheel exclusive to BMW M allow manual shifting (Right for upshifts, Left for downshifts). Upshifts occur significantly quicker than in the past thanks to new technology that reduces torque in the transmission through momentary deactivation of individual cylinders. This significantly enhances the athletic character of the vehicle. In the M Manual mode, each chosen gear is held up to redline in order to give the driver perfect throttle-steering control of the vehicle under the most demanding driving conditions. The transmission does not upshift or downshift automatically in this mode. A further option in the M Manual mode is to activate the Launch Control feature, which enables the driver to accelerate from a standstill with maximum performance. To activate Launch Control, the driver stops the vehicle, moves the gear selector into the M/S position and activates the Sports Power mode, as well as the M Dynamic mode, or respectively, the DSC-Off mode. Then, with the transmission in stage M1, the driver presses down the brake pedal and moves the accelerator to at least 60% throttle, setting Launch Control to standby. Standby status is confirmed by “starter”s flag” symbol in the instrument cluster. As soon as the driver releases the brake pedal, the vehicle will accelerate with full power in “genuine racing style.” In the process, the M Sports Automatic transmission automatically upshifts at the ideal points, with the fastest possible shifts and optimum wheelspin control. The driver may terminate the Launch Control process at any time by reducing the throttle position.

BMW xDrive and Dynamic Performance Control with a special M setup for optimum dynamics.

The outstanding success of BMW”s intelligent xDrive all-wheel-drive technology is based on quick, electronically-controlled power distribution to the front and rear axles. When combined with the superb, near 50-50 static weight distribution of any BMW, xDrive can prevent the tendency for the vehicle to oversteer and understeer as long as possible, reducing the need for Dynamic Stability Control (DSC) to provide electronic assistance.

BMW”s Dynamic Performance Control was presented for the first time in the BMW X6 and is now featured in the BMW X5 M and the BMW X6 M. Put succinctly, Dynamic Performance Control enhances driving stability in demanding situations and is thus perfectly suited to a powerful M vehicle. Vectoring of torque between the right and left rear wheels (both on throttle and off) significantly improves steering precision and tracking stability at all speeds, with DSC being required to stabilize the vehicle only under extreme lateral acceleration. Ultimately this offers the driver an unparalleled standard of performance, agility, balance, and traction, and re-establishes the benchmarks in drivetrain and suspension technology for all types of performance-oriented vehicles.

In the BMW X5 M and BMW X6 M the potentials of both xDrive and Dynamic Performance Control are maximized by BMW M, with the driver able to activate the M Dynamic Mode (MDM) with the DSC button on the center console or the steering wheel-mounted M Button. This mode raises DSC thresholds of intervention and ensures throttle-steering behavior typical of BMW M by shifting the xDrive bias more to the rear and involving the Dynamic Performance Control in the process. A pictogram in the Control Display in the instrument cluster allows the driver to monitor the activity of Dynamic Performance Control and xDrive through a clear visual depiction, which shows the driver how much power is being distributed to each wheel.

As a result, M Dynamic Mode allows maximum speeds in bends and on winding roads with the DSC system intervening only when the vehicle reaches the absolute physical limits of grip. Even under maximum load in the apex of a bend, the vehicle follows steering inputs with tremendous precision, giving the driver very high speeds when exiting a turn in the interest of optimum performance. Last but not least, DSC may be completely deactivated by experienced drivers at the touch of a button.

Beyond the stabilizing effects of Dynamic Stability Control provided by individual brake activation and engine power reduction under extreme conditions, DSC in the BMW X5 M and BMW X6 M includes a wide range of additional features tuned to BMW M standards to promote safe and exciting driving. These include ABS anti- lock brakes, Trailer Stability Control, Hill Descent Control, Dynamic Brake Control which maximizes brake force when required, Cornering Brake Control for advanced trail-braking, Brake Fade Compensation for extreme driving conditions, automatic Brake Drying when the windshield wipers are activated, Start-Off Assistant for driving on steep hills, and a braking function for use by the standard cruise control.

Both vehicles come with an electrohydraulic parking brake which features the Autohold (Auto H) function. Auto H is a convenience feature that holds the vehicle in position as soon as it comes to a stop at an intersection or in stop-and- go traffic, without requiring the driver to hold constant pressure on the brake pedal. As soon as the driver touches the accelerator again, the brake is instantly released.

M Suspension with standard Adaptive Drive.

The suspension developed specifically for the BMW X5 M and BMW X6 M with its double-wishbone front control arms and integral four-link rear axle offers M- specific geometry and damping. This is accomplished through optimized control arm and A-arm bushings at the front, as well as stiffer axle support mounts at the rear.

As part of the advanced Integrated Chassis Management system which networks all drivetrain and suspension components, both models feature standard self- leveling rear air suspension and Adaptive Drive with Electronic Damping Control (EDC) and Active Roll Stabilization (ARS). The special version of Adaptive Drive tailored to the requirements of BMW M lowers the entire vehicle by 10 millimeters or 0.4″³ versus the standard BMW X5 and BMW X6.

To quickly and reliably process data, Adaptive Drive uses the high-speed FlexRay data transmission protocol. FlexRay enables Adaptive Drive to transfer data through the vehicle”s on-board network at an extremely fast rate. This enables lightning-quick changes to settings for individual shock absorbers, swaybars, and other components as conditions and driving demands warrant. For example, if the front wheel encounters a bump, the system responds quickly enough before the rear wheel reaches the same bump. On the X5, X6, and 7 Series, BMW is the first carmaker in the world to use FlexRay as a regular technology.

The special Servotronic steering developed for the BMW X5 M and BMW X6 M provides variable steering assistance geared to the road speed of the vehicle. This allows the driver to negotiate parking maneuvers with lower effort while preserving exact feedback and the highest standard of steering precision at higher speeds.

The degree of power steering assistance is defined by two control maps. Apart from the standard configuration, the driver is able, through the Adaptive Drive button or the M Drive button on the steering wheel, to call up the Sport Mode. This activates a sports driving control map with higher control forces for particularly dynamic driving conditions.

When changing from Normal to Sport Mode, the system alters not only the Servotronic steering control map, but also the damper setting, with the shock absorbers of the vehicle being significantly stiffened in Sport Mode. In conjunction with Active Roll Stabilization, this allows an exceptionally high standard of linear lateral forces in dynamic bends and on fast, winding roads, and keeps body roll to a minimum.

M Brakes and tires to match the M Power.

Outstanding stopping power with fade reduced to a minimum is guaranteed by the high-performance M brake system, which combines giant four-piston fixed calipers at the front with floating calipers at the rear, combined in each case with large, internally-vented lightweight brake discs. The brake rotors themselves measure 15.6″ in diameter at front and 15.2″ at rear. They feature a riveted connection to join the aluminum rotor hats with the cast-iron rotor discs. The BMW X5 M and the BMW X6 M are the only vehicles of their type equipped with staggered-size tires front and rear, running on 20-inch light-alloy wheels. The choice of runflat tires in sizes 275/40 R 20 at the front and 315/35 R 20 at the rear is a result of the special setup of both models, with the emphasis on rear- wheel power and dynamic handling balance. This promotes exceptionally good transmission of power to the rear axle and precise, razor-sharp steering behavior of both models. Transitional stability is also world-class.

Maximum performance at the touch of a button: M Drive button on the steering wheel.

In addition to the DSC mode (On, MDM, or Off) and the specific setup of the shock absorbers and Servotronic steering, the driver may also configure the setup of the drivetrain on the BMW X5 M and the BMW X6 M. Activating the Power mode influences both engine and transmission behavior, and the driver can choose from the Sport and Efficiency driving programs. The Sport program allows precise control of engine power under the most dynamic driving conditions, and ensures a linear build-up of the power delivery. The Efficiency program, in turn, upshifts at earlier points not only to significantly reduce fuel consumption under normal driving conditions, but also to allow a relaxed style of driving by taking advantage of the new M engine”s prodigious torque and power available from low engine speeds. The result, therefore, is an ideal combination of flexibility for daily use and all-out performance when desired.

When customizing the response of the steering wheel-mounted M Drive button, the driver uses the M Drive menu to preselect the desired Power Mode and the setup of DSC and EDC, making a personalized combination of settings that can be activated on-demand. The driver”s favorite setup settings are saved and subsequently activated at any time simply by pressing the M Drive button on the steering wheel. Pressing the M Drive button again returns the vehicle to its previous configuration.

M-specific cockpit and sophisticated driver assistance systems for even greater ability at the wheel.

The BMW M philosophy naturally continues into the design and configuration of the driver”s “office.” Both of these all-wheel-drive high-performance sports vehicles come with a special M cockpit with the instrument cluster featuring a variable redline, specific vehicle function displays, and white display backlighting. Both the BMW X5 M and the BMW X6 M feature power, heated front M sport seats, an M sport leather steering wheel, M door sills, and driver”s footrest.

Infotainment functions, standard on-board Navigation with Real-Time Traffic data and communication functions are all controlled by BMW”s 4th-generation iDrive. The standard HiFi audio system features 12 loudspeakers and a 230 watt amplifier. In addition, both the BMW X5 M and the BMW X6 M may be equipped with a Head-Up Display programmed specifically by BMW M. This option enables the driver to customize the type and scope of data projected onto the windshield through settings available in the M Drive menu.

Innovative driver assistance systems are fitted as well, with both models featuring standard Dynamic Cruise Control, Rain Sensor, Auto-Dimming Mirrors, Park Distance Control, and BMW”s Xenon Adaptive Headlights. The list of optional features includes a Driver Assistance Package which includes High-Beam Assistant, Head-Up Display, and Rear View Camera with the spectacular new Top View feature. Top View provides the driver with an “birds-eye view” of the vehicle on the iDrive control screen, using input from a camera on each side of the vehicle and the traditional rear-view camera. Top View provides the driver with additional confidence for tight parking scenarios.

Stable bodyshell and advanced safety equipment.

The BMW X5 M and BMW X6 M come with extremely stiff bodyshells. To ensure maximum solidity, BMW”s body engineers focused on the use of intelligent lightweight materials technology. Both the choice of materials and the arrangement and geometry of the support bars, braces, and mounts on both models are based on an overall concept that combines maximum crash safety with supreme agility – which helps avoid crashes in the first place. At BMW, the ability to avoid a crash is the best safety feature of all.

Forces acting on the unibody in the event of a crash are diverted through the engine carriers and the chassis along several load paths in order to avoid extreme loads acting on individual structures and help keep impact energy away from the stable passenger cell.

Both the BMW X5 M and BMW X6 M come with frontal and hip/thorax airbags, as well as curtain head airbags to protect the occupants both front and rear from injury. Three-point inertia-reel seatbelts are at all seating positions with force limiters and, on the front seats, an additional seatbelt pretensioning function. To help protect occupants from cervical spine injury in the event of a rear impact, the front seats feature crash-activated active head restraints. ISOFIX child seat anchors are standard on the rear seats.

All restraint systems are controlled by the vehicles” central safety electronics, which take the type and severity of a collision into account so that the most effective safety elements are activated in any given crash. The frontal airbags feature two-stage activation, to allow deployment in varying intensity as a function of crash severity. Networked with Dynamic Stability Control, the standard rollover sensors activate both the curtain airbags and the seatbelt pretensioners, to ensure occupants are best positioned for and protected from the unlikely event of a vehicle rollover.

We’re less than 8 hours away from the official launch of the BMW X6 M and the BMW X5 M; however, you can always count on the internet to leak information. Last night, we saw a couple of official images of the BMW X6 M and today, just hours before the launch, the official press release has hit the World Wide Web (say it with that Optimus Prime tone).

Let’s get right to it. Both, the BMW X6 M and the BMW X5 M, are powered by a 4.4L direct injected V8 with twin-turbo chargers producing 555-hp at 6,000 rpm and 500 lb-ft of torque from 1500 to 5,650 rpm. Mated to a 6-speed M Sports Automatic transmission (with steering-wheel mounted paddleshifters) and BMW’s xDrive all-wheel-drive system, both models can go from 0 to 60 mph in 4.5 seconds. For those that really want to show off, BMW has added a Launch Control feature when the vehicle in M Manual mode, allowing the driver to take off from standstill with maximum performance (read the press release to see how it works – sounds like a lot of fun). Of course, you also have your M Drive button which allows you to configure the Power Mode and the setup of DSC and EDC of your BMW X6 M or X5 M.

How do you tell the X5 and X6 apart from their high-performance M models? The X5 M and the X6 M both feature a redesigned front-end with large air intakes, special gills in the front fenders, 20-inch light-alloy wheels and an aggressive looking rear diffuser with quad tailpipes.

Pricing and availability details will be announced closer to launch.

Make sure you join us later today for high-res images. You’ll also get to see live images of the BMW X6 M next week during the 2009 New York Auto Show.

Press Release:

The modern, sustainable legacy of BMW M GmbH began in 1985 when engineers placed the snarling, race-bred inline-6 engine from the M1 supercar into the production BMW 5 Series sedan, reworked the suspension and brakes, and created the first M5.

This new M engine is the world”s first with a pulse-tuned exhaust manifold encompassing both rows of cylinders combined with high-performance twin-scroll twin turbo technology.

We are just 2 days and 13 hours away from the launch of the BMW X6 M and the BMW X5 M. Nonetheless, BMW reminded us again today (via press release) that the new BMW X6 M will make its stateside debut at the 2009 New York Auto Show next week. Still no word on the X5 M.

While the BMW X6 M will be the highlight of BMW press event in New York, the 2009 BMW Z4, 2009 7-Series and the BMW Advanced Diesel with BluePerformance models will also light up the German automaker’s Big Apple stage.

Also joining the X6 M will be the 2010 BMW 5-Series and the 2010 BMW 6-Series. Don’t get too excited since no major redesigns of the two models are expected (just minor facelifts). What they will get is the same Navigation system featured in the 2009 BMW 7 Series. The 2010 BMW 5-Series and 6-Series will also get access to the Google Maps points-of-interest database when equipped with BMW Assist.

Press Release:

BMW X6 M MAKES WORLD DEBUT AT NEW YORK INTERNATIONAL AUTO SHOW. Z4 ROADSTER AND ALL-NEW 7 SERIES LEAD OTHER HIGHLIGHTS.

Woodcliff Lake, NJ ““ March 31, 2009″¦ Finding new ways to expand the boundaries of what”s possible with existing designs is the singular purpose of the craftsmen at BMW M. The modern legacy of BMW M began in 1985 when engineers placed the race-bred engine from the M1 supercar into the BMW 5 Series sedan and created the first BMW M5. The M5 was a sedan with power, precision, and linear control never before imaginable. In New York, BMW M will introduce the next milestone in its illustrious history: the BMW X6 M. The X6 M will utilize several new engine, drivetrain, and suspension technologies to transform the world”s first Sports Activity Coupe into a BMW M product.

The BMW X6 M will share the spotlight at the New York International Auto Show with an array of models including the all-new Z4 Roadster and the fifth-generation of the flagship 7 Series. Other featured vehicles will be the Advanced Diesels and the freshly updated 2010 BMW 5 Series and 6 Series models

BMW Z4 Roadster

The all-new BMW Z4 offers the driving pleasure of a BMW Roadster with refined and stylish flair. With the roof down, this two-seater offers an intense experience of sunshine and wind – and driving with the hardtop closed provides the comfort of a premium, sporty coupe.

The design of the new Z4 features classic details with new, up-to-date style. It offers a unique combination of elegance, performance and comfort. The rigid aluminum shells of the two-piece hardtop completely open or close within 20 seconds. Even with the roof closed, the Z4 retains proportions typical of a genuine roadster.

The new BMW Z4 comes with either of two inline-6 engines displacing 3.0 liters: 300 horsepower in the BMW Z4 sDrive35i and 255 horsepower in the BMW Z4 sDrive30i ensure outstanding acceleration and response.

BMW 7 Series

The all-new fifth generation of the BMW 7 Series radiates a natural presence, inherent sportiness and an elegance born of precision in concept and execution. A new V-8 engine with direct injection and twin turbochargers expresses BMW EfficientDynamics at the highest level of performance. The 4.4-liter, twin-turbo V-8 delivers 400 horsepower and 450lb-ft of torque. New, exclusive BMW driver-assistance systems and comfort-related features further add to a truly exceptional driving and riding experience.

Inside the new 7, the ambiance is luxurious, of transcendent quality and ““ most important of all ““ inviting. The driver-oriented control center features Black Panel technology. More functions than ever are conveniently accessible to the driver from the multi-function steering wheel.

BMW Advanced Diesel with BluePerformance

The BMW Advanced Diesel powered 335d and the X5 xDrive35d models feature a 50 State emission compliant version of BMW”s award winning sequential-turbo 3.0 liter Diesel engine ““ the first performance-oriented and efficient Advanced Diesel engine in BMW”s U.S. line.

The sequential-turbo 3.0 liter Diesel engine powering both models employs both a very small and a larger turbocharger combined with an innovative intake system enabling the engine to develop 265 horsepower. Even more impressive are the torque characteristics. Fully 80 percent of the torque is available from 1100 rpm to 4200 rpm. The peak torque is 425 lbs-ft at 1750 rpm ““ almost as much as BMW”s 6.0 liter V12. The performance is what the enthusiast would expect from a BMW. The 335d is capable of sprinting from 0 ““ 60 mph in six seconds flat. The X5 xDrive35d will do it in 6.9 seconds. No other diesels in the US will perform like this pair of BMW Advanced Diesel models.

Coupled with this performance potential is impressive fuel economy. The EPA mileage estimates for the 335d are 23 city and 36 highway. The X5 xDrive35d is rated at 19 mpg city and 26 mpg highway. Thanks to BluePerformance technology, this unparalleled blend of performance and efficiency can only be found in a BMW Advanced Diesel.

2010 BMW 5 Series

The BMW 5 Series continues as the quintessential executive express for those with a passion for driving. Engine choices include two highly efficient inline-6 engines and a 4.8-liter V8. There is the choice of Sedan or Sports Wagon, BMW”s characteristic rear-wheel drive or the innovative xDrive all-wheel drive. All models are available with a 6-speed manual transmission or 6-speed automatic with e-shift.

For 2010, Navigation-equipped 5 Series models will benefit from the same Navigation system featured in the new BMW 7 Series. Additionally, for 2010, Navigation-equipped 5 Series models gain access to the Google Maps points-of-interest database when equipped with BMW Assist.

All 5 Series models now offer the availability of an M Sport Package, with components perfectly matched to the vehicle.

2010 BMW 6 Series

The 2010 BMW 6 Series, available in Coupe or Convertible, offers sporting, yet luxurious accommodations in the 2+2 format; sporty and elegant exterior design; strong, refined performance; an extra measure of sporty driving pleasure; and extensive standard equipment, encompassing outstanding luxury and convenience features. The 6 Series is powered by a muscular V-8 engine and some of BMW”s most advanced chassis technology, luxury and safety features.

For 2010, Navigation-equipped 6 Series models will benefit from the same Navigation system featured in the new BMW 7 Series. Additionally, for 2010, Navigation-equipped 6 Series models gain access to the Google Maps points-of-interest database when equipped with BMW Assist.

The new BMW X5 M and the BMW X6 M will make their world debut on April 4th. However, with the launch date just days away, BMW seems to be easing up on keeping the two behemoths under the wraps.

The RTL II Grip magazine had the chance to join BMW on exclusive test drive of the X5 M and X6 M as the two vehicles were undergoing winter testing in the Scandinavian Peninsula. Although you may not be able to understand the German being spoken in the video, you can tell that while the two models are all about power BMW has not overlooked their off-road capabilities.

The only details we know right now is that power will come from a 4.4L twin-turbo V8 making more than 500-hp.
