Closing up September sales, where it sold 128,446 units (an increase of 9.3 percent), BMW stays on course to remain the world’s top-selling luxury automakers.

“At the end of the third quarter we find ourselves well on course to deliver our target of more than 1.6 million vehicles in 2011 and to remain the clear number one among premium manufacturers once again this year,” BMW’s head of sales Ian Robertson said in a statement Monday.

Overall, BMW Group vehicles including Mini and Rolls Royce grew 16 percent in the first 9 months of 2011 – selling a total of 1.23 million units.

Sales of the BMW X3, X1 and 5-Series are credit for the sales jump.

Mercedes-Benz said last month that sales of its Mercedes-Benz and Smart brands could surpass 1.35 million in 2010. The Mercedes-Benz brand has sold 919,288 units in the first nine months of the year. Audi hopes to beat BMW by 2015 and is targeting sales of 1.3 million this year. So far this year, Audi has sold 973,200 units, an increase of 17.4 percent.

BMW of USA has just announced that the X1 definitely won’t be coming to US shores before the X1’s mid-cycle refresh in 2013. BMW said that this is due to a weak dollar to euro exchange rate.

“It can be a positive to wait until the mid-cycle change and bring in a freshened vehicle,” said a BMW insider. “Global demand for the X1 is still extremely strong in markets where our volume potential is high for this type of vehicle. Here in the U.S., the X3 and likely will continue to be our volume (crossover).”

Click here for more news on the BMW X1.

Despite the X1 not coming to US shores, the X1 will be sold in Canada as confirmed by BMW’s regional HQ there and would begin selling at the end of 2011.

So if you want an X1 early that bad, head on over to Canada! Though you will most likely have to spend more money to get it legalized here.

While we still have yet to get the BMW X1 in the U.S. market, the X1 sDrive20d EfficientDynamics Edition has just been unveiled as a more fuel-efficient option for European buyers.

The engine was designed for those who think green. It comes with a 2.0-liter four-cylinder diesel motor, equipped with a TwinPower Turbo, producing 161-hp at 280 lb-ft of torque.

Click here for more news on the BMW X1.

Other features include electric power steering, brake energy regeneration, an engine start/stop system, and low-rolling resistance tires mounted on aerodynamic light-alloy wheels. All the modification add up to fuel savings, and improved CO2 emissions.

The X1 gets another set of modifications in addition to the EfficientDynamics Edition, with a petrol version with the same displacement and TwinPower Turbo. This one will move at 181-hp at 199 lb-ft of torque, but doesn’t save on the fuel and emissions expenditure the same.

The BMW X1 is scheduled to arrive on U.S. highways in late 2012.

Press Release:

The BMW X1 – unique in the premium segment and now even more efficient.

Munich. The BMW X1, the very first and still the only premium vehicle in its segment, continues to extend its pioneering position in the field of fuel efficiency. In the autumn of 2011, the model diversity across the range of the compact all-rounder will be complemented by the BMW X1 sDrive20d EfficientDynamics Edition. This model, which was systematically designed to provide driving pleasure simultaneously combined with reduced fuel consumption and emission levels, is powered by a 120 kW/163 hp four-cylinder diesel engine featuring BMW TwinPower Turbo technology. With an average fuel consumption of 4.5 litres/100 km and a CO2 emission level of 119 grams per kilometre it achieves best marks for efficiency in a BMW X model. Furthermore, from the autumn of 2011, a newly developed four-cylinder petrol engine with BMW TwinPower Turbo technology will be available for the BMW X1. The 135 kW/184 hp power unit also sets new standards in the reduction of fuel consumption and CO2 emissions within its performance class, with values ranging from 7.1 litres and 165 grams for the BMW X1 sDrive20i and 7.7 litres (automatic: 7.6 litres) and 179 grams (177 grams) for the BMW X1 xDrive20i.

The consistent deployment of highly efficient engines and BMW EfficientDynamics technology fitted as standard helps BMW X models also achieve brand-typical driving pleasure combined with exemplary fuel economy and low emission levels. The BMW X1’s outstanding efficiency is a fundamental part of its premium character, which is unique within the competitive environment and also underscored by high-class workmanship, elaborated functionality, a variable interior and numerous equipment features. The BMW X1 sDrive20d EfficientDynamics Edition raises the relation between sporty and athletic agility and fuel economy to a new level. Its 2-litre four-cylinder diesel engine, whose BMW TwinPower Turbo technology comprises a supercharging system with variable turbine geometry and Common Rail injection, generates a maximum output of 120 kW/163 hp between 3 250 und 4 200 rpm. Maximum torque of 380 Nm is available between 1 750 and 2 500 rpm.

The engine has been optimised in detail in order to achieve an exceptionally high degree of efficiency. Special model-specific features include a centrifugal force pendulum in the dual-mass flywheel, which compensates vibration experienced at low engine speeds, thus providing more riding comfort when the vehicle is driven within the economic low engine speed range. The gear-shift point indicator fitted as standard has been adapted to suit the new engine characteristics. Moreover, standard features also include brake energy regeneration, Auto Start Stop function, electromechanical power steering, a disengageable air-conditioning compressor and tyres with reduced rolling resistance. The BMW X1 sDrive20d EfficientDynamics Edition also features a longer rear axle drive ratio and specific light alloys in the Streamline design.

Furthermore, the BMW X1 sDrive20d EfficientDynamics Edition features newly conceived insulation technology for reducing engine noise that is perceptible inside the vehicle. The noise optimisation measures will be deployed as from the autumn of 2011 in all further diesel versions of the BMW X1.

The petrol engine variants of the BMW X1 also present themselves as pacesetters for ever-increasing driving pleasure combined with optimised efficiency. The BMW X1 xDrive28i is now being followed by further models featuring a new generation of four-cylinder combustion engines with BMW TwinPower Turbo technology. The technology package featured on the 2-litre four-cylinder power unit for the BMW X1 sDrive20i with rear-wheel drive and the BMW X1 xDrive20i with intelligent four-wheel drive comprises a supercharging system according to the Twin Scroll principle, the direct injection system High Precision Injection and variable valve control VALVETRONIC. This combination guarantees not only spontaneous response and sporty power delivery even in the higher load ranges, but also favourable fuel consumption that is outstanding for petrol engines in this performance class.

Maximum power output of the new engine is 135 kW/184 hp, which is made available between 5 000 and 6 250 rpm, whilst maximum torque of 270 Nm is achieved between 1 250 and 4 500 rpm. Thanks to its supreme pulling power and sporting performance, the BMW X1 sDrive20i accelerates from 0-100 km/h in 7.4 seconds and the BMW X1 xDrive20i in 7.8 seconds. Average fuel consumption of 7.1 litres/100 km as per the EU test cycle and a CO2 emission level of 165 grams are applicable to the BMW X1 sDrive20i both in conjunction with the standard six-speed manual gearbox as well as with the optional eight-speed automatic transmission. The BMW X1 xDrive20i achieves an average fuel consumption of 7.7 litres/100 km (automatic: 7.6 litres) and a CO2 emission level of 179 (177) grams per kilometre. The standard BMW Efficient Dynamics technology package featured on both models comprises in addition to brake energy regeneration and on-demand control of ancillary components also the Auto Start Stop function and the gear-shift point indicator for vehicles with manual transmission as well as electromechanical power steering on the BMW X1 sDrive20i.

With the introduction of the new engines, the drive portfolio of the BMW X1 will increase in the autumn of 2011 to a total of three petrol and four diesel power units with a power output spectrum ranging from 105 kW/143 hp to 180 kW/245 hp. All told, there is a choice of ten model variants, five of them featuring characteristic BMW power transmission to the rear wheels and five with the electronically controlled four-wheel drive system xDrive.

The entry-level model from the BMW X family attains additional appeal through optimisation of the suspension technology as well as an extended range of optional equipment. The standard stability control feature DSC (Dynamic Stability Control) has been supplemented on the rear-wheel drive diesel models by the dry braking and fading compensation functions. The models BMW X1 sDrive20i, BMW X1 sDrive28i, BMW X1 xDrive20i, BMW X1 xDrive28i and BMW X1 xDrive20d are equipped in addition with the brake stand-by function and a hill-start assistant. The BMW Individual roof rail system High Gloss Shadow Line will also be available in future as an individual option and thus not only in conjunction with the M Sport Package for the BMW X1. Moreover, the optional range of BMW ConnectedDrive features will be supplemented as from the autumn of 2011 by the Real-Time Traffic Information function.

If you were looking forward to purchase BMW X1 in the United States later this year, we have some bad news for you. The German automaker has delayed launch of the X1 until the end of 2012 due to strong demand for the redesigned version of the 2011 BMW X3.

BMW of North America CEO Jim O’Donnell said that another reason for the delay is that the X1 is selling really well outside of the United States so supplies are a bit tight.. The X1 was launched in Europe in November 2009.

Originally, BMW planned to bring the X1 to the U.S. early this year, but delayed it until the end of 2011.

Click here for more news on the BMW X1.

O’Donnell said the X1 “was always going to be a niche vehicle” in the U.S. market with forecast sales of less than 5,000 units annually.

The new BMW X3, which went on sale in January, sold 5,710 units in the first quarter, up from 1,355 a year earlier. BMW sold only 6,075 X3 units last year. The BMW X3 peaked at 34,604 units in 2004, but O’Donnell expects the new X3 to reach 25,000 units this year.

Even though BMW had just recently revealed the all-new BMW M5 Concept, there’s much speculation as to what the German make has planned for the next couple years.

Some journalists were invited to Munich for an update on BMW’s latest efforts. Next to the F10 M5, a number of updated 1er hatchbacks were spotted lurking around BMW’s R&D center in Munich. Due for a mid-cycle refresh, the differences seem to limited to new front and rear fascias that mimic the new 5er. Other differences noticed, especially on other recently updated BMWs, is the taller and more upright nose to meet new pedestrian safety requirements. Included are bigger, wider kidney grilles and updated headlights.

Also spotted was a fully camoed 3er, which because of its extensive camo suit and non-production taillights, was a little harder to render. It was parked next to a five-door 1er and due to the obvious proportions of being slightly longer than the 1er, a short trunk and short front and rear overhangs. Rumors were that the new 3er would be revealed at the Frankfurt auto show later this year, but BMW immediately debunked this rumor.

Additionally, even though the new 6er was just fully revealed earlier this year, another 6er prototype was spotted with an all-glass roof, which we assume could be a Mercedes “Magic Sky” glass roof competitor that like the Benz version, changes transparency either automatically or at the touch of a button.

Alternatively, BMW announced that the new X1 crossover is put on indefinite hold because of unexpected demand in other markets, which has its plants running at capacity. To fix this, BMW’s working hard around the clock to meet the demands of the US market. Equally, BMW plans on replacing the current straight-six with a 245hp turbocharged 2.0L four-banger that offers a better torque curve, a quick 0-60 time (.7 seconds to be exact), and better fuel economy than the current straight-six. BMW’s legendary straight-six will remain an option however.

More diesel models are also in the works as the current X5 is selling more diesel models than the gasoline V8, and the current 335d makes up 10-15% of 3er sales. A 335d xDrive is also in the list of things to work on for the German mark, as well as more efficient 2.0L turbocharged diesel four-banger models.

Lastly, a camouflaged Rolls-Royce Ghost was spotted, probably suggesting a mid-cycle refresh in the works complete with new taillights, headlights, and even a new grille and front fascia.

The BMW X1 has become a pretty nice sales success for the German automaker and if rumors are to be believed, BMW is considering an M edition of the compact crossover.

Reports suggest that power for the BMW X1 will come from a turbocharged 3.0L 6-cylinder engine making 315-hp with a maximum torque of 332 lb-ft. Mated to an 8-speed automatic transmission, the BMW X1 M should be able to run from 0 to 62 mph in around 5 seconds. We’re not sure why BMW wouldn’t choose the 3.0L inline 6-cylinder twin-turbocharged engine making 335-hp.

Click here for more news on the BMW X1.

Of course BMW will also add a new M body kit, a sport-tuned suspension and better brakes.

There is no word on when we can expect to see the BMW X1… well, I mean, we’re still waiting for the X1 to hit North American roads.

The company now says that it will expand the use of its TwinPower Turbo technology to other 4-clyinder and 3-cylinder engines.

Expanding the use of the TwinPower Turbo technology to range of gasoline and diesel engines is a part of BMW’s commitment to cut average CO2 emissions by another 25 percent by 2020. CO2 emissions in BMW vehicles were reduced by 30 percent in 1995 and 2010.

In the 2011 BMW X1, the 2.0 4-cylinder TwinPower Turbo engine produces 245-hp and 258 lb-ft of torque.

4-cylinder BMW engines will come to the United States by the end of 2011.

As confirmed yesterday by BMW of North America’s CEO Jim O’Donnell, 4-cylinder turbo BMW vehicles will be coming to the stateside at the end of this year. Today, BMW officially confirmed that 4-cylinder engines will be returning to the US line-up for the first time in since 1999.

The engine is the same unit that recently made its debut in Europe on the 2011 BMW X1 xDrive28i. The 2.0L 4-cylinder TwinPower Turbo with high-pressure direct-injection and BMW’s VALVETRONIC intake control produces 240-hp and 260 lb-ft of torque. That’s more than BMW’s naturally aspirated 3.0L inline 6-cylinder engine.

“Maximum output of 240 horsepower is achieved at 5,000 rpm, 1,500 rpm lower than in the normally-aspirated 3.0-liter inline six, BMW said. “The peak torque of 260 lb-ft, comes on stream at just 1,250 rpm. Not only is that 30% more torque than the aforementioned inline six, it also peaks 1,500 rpm earlier. The vigorous power comes on early and climbs steadily all the way to redline.”

No word on what models will get the engine first but BMW said that “US-specific model and timing information will follow at a later date.”

This isn’t just the debut of the new BMW X1 xDrive28i. No, no… this is also the debut of first 4-cylinder gasoline engine with BMW TwinPower Turbo technology and don’t be scared because the engine provides a substantial power upgrade along with significant efficiency improvements over the 6-cylinder found in BMW ’28i’ models.

The 2011 BMW X1 xDrive28i is the first model to get the new 2.0L 4-cylinder TwinPower Turbo, which produces 245-hp and 258 lb-ft of torque. The engine gets BMW TwinPower Turbo technology with high-performance twin-scroll turbocharging system, High Precision Injection direct petrol injection with innovative solenoid injectors, and the latest version of the BMW-patented VALVETRONIC variable valve control system. In the 2011 BMW X1 xDrive28i, the 2.0L 4-cylinder is mated to a 6-speed manual as standard with an 8-speed automatic available as an option.

If you think performance was disregarded when downsizing to a 4-cylinder engine, think again. The 2011 BMW X1 xDrive28i goes from 0-62 mph in 6.1 seconds when mated to a 6-speed manual and 6.5 seconds when mated to a 6-speed automatic. These times are an improvement of 0.7 seconds and 0.3 seconds respectively on those for the previous model with six-speed automatic transmission. Top speed comes in at 149 mph.

How fuel-efficient is the new 2.0L 4-cylinder TwinPower Turbo? When fitted in the 2011 BMW X1 xDrive28i, the engine allows for an estimated fuel-economy of 7.9 liters / 100km or 29.7 mpg in U.S. terms.

Sales will start in Europe later this year. We’re not sure when or if the 2011 BMW X1 xDrive28i will come to the stateside but we’ll let you know as soon as we find out.

A new dimension in driving pleasure and efficiency:
The new BMW X1 xDrive28i with BMW TwinPower Turbo.

With its powerful, sporty and elegant styling, supreme agility, luxurious functionality and innovative equipment features, the BMW X1 is a trailblazer in the premium compact segment in terms of driving pleasure. Yet again premium carmaker BMW has successfully transplanted the BMW X model concept to a new vehicle segment to create a unique product. Now the BMW X1 is breaking new ground, this time in terms of the BMW EfficientDynamics programme. The new BMW X1 xDrive28i is the brand’s first four-cylinder petrol model with BMW TwinPower Turbo technology, which comprises High Precision Injection direct petrol injection, a charge system based on the twin-scroll principle, double-VANOS variable camshaft timing and VALVETRONIC variable valve control.

BMW has timed the introduction of this technology package in the new BMW X1 xDrive28i to coincide with the launch of a new generation of BMW 2.0-litre petrol engines. The new 180 kW/245 hp powerplant combines a power and torque upgrade over the previous engine with substantially reduced fuel consumption and emissions. This twofold improvement is reflected in some impressive performance specifications. The 0 to 100 km/h (62 mph) sprint time is 6.1 seconds (automatic: 6.5 seconds), an improvement of 0.7 seconds (automatic: 0.3 seconds) over the previous model, which was only available as an automatic. At the same time, average fuel consumption in the EU test cycle has been cut by 16 per cent to 7.9 litres/100 km (35.7 mpg imp), with CO2 emissions of 183 grams per kilometre.

The new BMW X1 xDrive28i comes with a six-speed manual transmission as standard. The standard-fitted BMW EfficientDynamics technology includes – amongst other features – Brake Energy Regeneration, an Optimum Shift Indicator, the Auto Start-Stop function and on-demand control of auxiliary units. An optional eight-speed automatic version is also available. Thanks to its exceptionally high internal efficiency, models with this transmission offer identical fuel consumption and emissions performance to those with the manual version.

As standard specification, the new BMW X1 xDrive28i is equipped with the BMW xDrive all-wheel-drive system, whose electronically controlled multi-plate clutch continuously varies the drive power split between the front and rear axles. The intelligent all-wheel-drive system is integrated with Dynamic Stability Control (DSC) and responds quickly to the first signs
of oversteer or understeer. The result is improved traction in slippery conditions or away from surfaced roads, and improved cornering dynamics. xDrive is calibrated for optimised driving dynamics, which results in precise steering response when cornering. Additionally, the optional Performance Control system can be specified, which matches the drive torque at the rear wheels to driving conditions for even more agile performance.

To add to the agile driving qualities, from spring 2011 the BMW X1 will for the first time be available with an M Sports package. This option, which is available ex works for all engine versions, comprises a range of suspension, exterior and interior components which have been developed specifically for this compact BMW X model.

The engine: new benchmark in efficiency and dynamism.

BMW X models offer their own distinctive interpretation of typical BMW driving pleasure. The BMW X1 xDrive28i combines this special driving experience with efficiency that is unrivalled in this power class. As a result, this new
BMW X1 model offers sporty power delivery of a kind that was previously confined to six-cylinder engines – but combines it with outstanding fuel consumption and emissions performance.

It’s all down to the latest-generation 2.0-litre four-cylinder petrol engine, which sets new standards with its various innovative technologies. The BMW X1 xDrive28i’s powerplant achieves the twofold goal of BMW EfficientDynamics in impressive style: it continuously raises the bar on driving pleasure, while at the same time reducing fuel consumption and emissions. With a displacement of 1,997 cc and world-exclusive BMW TwinPower Turbo technology, incorporating twin-scroll turbocharging, High Precision Injection, double-VANOS and VALVETRONIC, it delivers maximum power of 180 kW/245 hp at 5,000 rpm – 55 kW more than the previous top-powered BMW 2.0-litre petrol engine.

Debut: first application of BMW TwinPower Turbo in a four-cylinder engine.

BMW TwinPower Turbo technology gives the new four-cylinder engine the sort of power which naturally aspirated engines can only achieve through more cylinders and substantially larger displacement. The four-cylinder engine with its all-aluminium crankcase, including a motor sport-derived bedplate, is lighter and more compact than a six-cylinder engine of equivalent power. This has direct benefits for the efficiency of the BMW X1 xDrive28i and also, thanks to the reduced front axle load, for agility.

The new engine offers more torque, too, than the previous naturally aspirated engines. Rated torque of 350 Newton metres, which comes on stream at just 1,250 rpm, ensures very good low-end response. The vigorous power delivery, from only slightly above idling, is a very seductive feature of this new engine, and the power climbs steadily all the way to the upper area of the load range. The new BMW X1 xDrive28i has a 0 to 100 km/h (62 mph) sprint time of 6.1 seconds (6.5 seconds with automatic transmission). These times are an improvement of 0.7 seconds and 0.3 seconds respectively on those for the previous model with six-speed automatic transmission. The new BMW X1 xDrive28i hits a top speed of 240 km/h (149 mph).

The turbocharger is a twin-scroll system. The exhaust streams leaving the two pairs of cylinders are kept completely separate as they flow through the exhaust manifold and the turbocharger, taking a spiral path to the turbine wheel. This configuration results in very low exhaust back pressure at low engine rpm, and allows the energy of the exhaust gas pulses to be optimally managed and translated into powerful rotation of the turbine blades, without a response delay. The result is instant throttle reaction and typical BMW fast-revving performance.

More dynamic performance plus reduced emissions, thanks to VALVETRONIC, double-VANOS and direct injection.

The fully cylinder head-integrated VALVETRONIC variable valve control system, and the double-VANOS variable intake and exhaust camshaft timing, have a further positive impact on power development. The BMW X1 xDrive28i engine features assembled intake and exhaust camshafts and a latest-generation VALVETRONIC system which is even faster-acting thanks to an optimised stepper motor with integrated sensor.

The patented BMW VALVETRONIC system with seamlessly variable intake valve lift control dispenses with the throttle valve system typical of earlier engine generations. Instead, combustion air mass is controlled inside the engine, resulting in much faster response. Pumping losses are kept to a minimum, so making the engine more efficient.

The new engine’s unusually high efficiency, for a turbocharged unit, is also down to the High Precision Injection petrol direct-injection system. Centrally positioned between the valves, solenoid injectors with a maximum injection pressure of 200 bar precisely control the supply of fuel. The fuel is injected very close to the spark plug, resulting in clean and homogeneous combustion. The cooling effect of the injected fuel also results in a higher compression ratio than on turbocharged naturally aspirated engines. This results in further efficiency improvements.

The efficiency theme continues with a computer-controlled oil pump and an on-demand electric coolant pump. Also, the new BMW X1 xDrive28i is specified as standard with a six-speed manual transmission with Auto Start-Stop function. This system automatically switches off the engine when the vehicle stops at crossroads or is sitting in stationary traffic in order to prevent unnecessary idling and wasteful use of fuel.

The new engine technology and extensive, standard-fitted BMW EfficientDynamics features achieve an exceptionally good balance between performance and fuel consumption. The new BMW X1 xDrive28i has average fuel consumption in the EU test cycle of 7.9 litres /100 km (35.7 mpg imp), a 16 per cent improvement on the previous model. CO2 emissions are rated at 183 grams per km.

Features based on award-winning six-in-line engine result in new efficiency benchmark.

A number of key design features of the new engine are based on the latest-generation BMW six-in-line engine with BMW TwinPower Turbo technology. This 225 kW/306 hp unit, fitted in models such as the new BMW X3 xDrive35i, is internationally regarded as a benchmark in dynamic performance and impressive efficiency.

Amongst other tributes, these special qualities earned the six-cylinder engine the Engine of the Year Award 2010. No other 3.0-litre engine offers anything like such a good balance between driving pleasure and fuel economy.
And now, the engine of the new BMW X1 xDrive28i has achieved a similar benchmark position in the 2.0-litre engine class.

Optional eight-speed automatic transmission – greater driving comfort with no increase in fuel consumption over manual transmission.

The BMW X1 xDrive28i is equipped as standard with a six-speed manual transmission. Optionally, the power can be managed by an eight-speed automatic transmission. Innovative gear train design makes this transmission comparable in size and weight to the previous six-speed automatic transmissions. The additional ratios provide an appreciable improvement in driving comfort, sporty performance and efficiency. Also optional are a sports leather steering wheel and an M leather steering wheel, which both come with shift paddles which allow the driver to operate the transmission manually yet still keep both hands on the wheel. In typical M style, the right-hand paddle is used for changing up and the left-hand paddle for changing down.

Further features of the eight-speed automatic are short shift times, minimal torque converter slip, which only occurs at launch, reduced friction losses, since no more than two clutches are ever open at once, and a wide ratio spread, which has benefits both for sprinting performance and for low-rpm cruising. The result is very dynamic acceleration, smooth gear changes and at the same time a further reduction in fuel consumption. On the new BMW X1 xDrive28i, this means that models with automatic transmission offer identical fuel consumption and emissions performance to the manual version.

The BMW X1: best-in-segment agility, thanks to BMW xDrive.

A variable drive power split between the front and rear wheels, courtesy of the new BMW X1 xDrive28i’s standard-fitted BMW xDrive all-wheel-drive system, results in improved agility – and confident traction away from unsurfaced roads. Via a transfer case with electronically controlled multi-plate clutch, xDrive finely controls the drive power in line with changing conditions, always sending the right amount of power to the axle whose wheels have the best grip.

The permanent all-wheel-drive system is integrated with Dynamic Stability Control (DSC) and with the engine management. Wheel slip is detected at the very first signs by sensors at the wheels. The system then responds with
split-second speed by varying the drive split to efficiently correct under- and oversteer at the earliest possible stage. During cornering, more drive power is sent to the rear axle to improve manoeuvrability and prevent understeer.
The DSC system includes integral ABS, Dynamic Brake Control (DBC), Cornering Brake Control (CBC) and also Dynamic Traction Control (DTC). DTC raises the stability control response thresholds, making it easier to move off on snow or sand. Amongst other features, the DSC system also includes a Brake Drying function – for wet-weather driving – and Fading Compensation.

Either as a stand-alone option, or in conjunction with the likewise optional sports suspension, Performance Control applies precisely controlled braking pulses, with torque compensation, as an efficient corrective measure at
the very first signs of understeer on slippery surfaces and under very dynamic cornering.

Maximum agility and all-round safety through state-of-the-art suspension technology and robust body structure.

The agile, precise, confident handling of the BMW X1 xDrive28i is a direct result of its high-performance suspension technology and a very robust body structure. The double-joint spring-strut thrust bar axle at the front and the
five-arm rear axle provide an optimal combination of ride quality and sporty handling. The hydraulic rack-and-pinion steering system comes with precise power assistance.

In part, the BMW X1 owes its extreme torsional rigidity to intelligent use of high-tensile and ultra-high-tensile steels. Material choices, and the positioning and geometry of struts, braces and other supporting members, are designed for maximum crashworthiness, while also optimising weight and agility. Front and side airbags along with side curtain head airbags for the front and rear rows of seats are standard specification. Three-point inertia-reel belts are standard on all seats, with belt force limiters and belt latch tensioners at the front.

The BMW X1’s standard twin round headlights also feature daytime running lights. The optional bi-xenon headlights incorporate sidelights and daytime running lights. They are combined at the rear with LED fibre optic technology which makes the L-shape of the tail-light clusters stand out even more strikingly. Further options for the BMW X1 include High-Beam Assistant, a rain sensor and Adaptive Headlights, which swivel in line with the steering angle.

Confident styling, state-of-the-art interior functionality.

The BMW X1 delivers unfiltered driving pleasure, all-round sporty performance and extreme agility both in urban traffic and out of town. The styling is marked by confident elegance, upscale functionality and trendsetting modernity. The unique vehicle concept combines typical BMW driving pleasure with a level of interior adaptability which is quite unusual for the compact segment and will appeal to customers with an active and varied lifestyle. Both the versatility and the sporty, agile driving qualities are closely echoed in the body styling, with its seamless transitions between front, sides and rear, and well-defined lines which create fluent connections between the different elements of the body.

The five-door X1 measures 4.45 metres (175″) in length, but despite the smaller dimensions compared with the BMW X6, BMW X5 and BMW X3, it is clearly identifiable as a BMW X model from every angle. Square-contoured wheel arches, increased ground clearance, narrow guard strips along the lower edges of the body and the upright BMW kidney grille all point to robust design. The long bonnet, short front overhang, a long wheelbase of 2.76 metres (108.6″) and the steeply sloping rear windscreen accentuate the sense of length and confirm the sporty credentials of the BMW X1.

The higher seating position and driver-centric cockpit design add to the intense driving experience. This layout also provides convenient entry and gives the driver a commanding view of the road. High-quality materials and striking surface textures, plus iDrive for models equipped with an optional navigation system, all reflect the premium-class quality of the BMW X1. Expressive graphic elements, extensive trim panelling and dynamic styling create a sporty, youthful aura in the BMW X1. Horizontal lines give the instrument panel a layered look which continues into the door trim, accentuating the width of the instrument panel as well as the general sense of spaciousness. The centre control styling creates a clear demarcation between the driver’s and front passenger’s areas.

The rear offers three full-size seats. One or more sections of the 40:20:40 split-folding rear seatback can be lowered to increase luggage capacity from 420 right up to 1,350 litres (14.8 to 47.6 cu. ft). At the detail level, functionality is further enhanced by a wide range of trays, cupholders and stowage compartments.

Practical, innovative, high-quality optional equipment.

The everyday practicality, driving pleasure and comfortable touring qualities which are hallmarks of the BMW X1 can be expanded even further by a range of top-quality optional equipment features. Roof rails, a storage compartment package and a tow bar with removable ball head provide additional transport capacity. Interior customisation options include sports seats, seat heating, an interior lights package and the large panorama glass roof. The powerful and efficient automatic climate control system offers a choice of five different climate control modes and maintains a pleasant temperature inside the vehicle at all times of year and in all weather conditions. The standard-fitted audio system includes six speakers, a CD drive and an AUX-IN connection for external audio devices. Optionally, MP3 players and other data or music storage devices can be integrated in the in-car entertainment system via a USB interface.

BMW X1 models equipped with the Business or Professional navigation system also feature the new-generation iDrive operating system with centre console-mounted Controller and direct selection buttons, functional bookmark buttons below the climate control panel and a 6.5- or 8.8-inch Control Display. A wide range of driver assistance systems and mobility services from BMW ConnectedDrive are also available. To supplement the optional sensor-equipped Park Distance Control system, a further manoeuvring aid can be specified – the optional rear-view camera. BMW ConnectedDrive also offers in-car internet access and innovative solutions for the integration of smartphones and external music players.

The optional apps from BMW ConnectedDrive offer an attractive extension of the range of infotainment features in the BMW X1 as well. With this special option Apple iPhone users can download free software from the Apple App Store that allows them to select internet radio stations from around the world using the iDrive system or to have the latest posts from their personal Facebook or Twitter account shown on the car’s Control Display. In addition, the online services allow standardised messages to be sent from the car. Additional apps and functions are set to follow in the future.

Debut: M Sports package for the BMW X1.

Simultaneously with the market launch of the new BMW X1 xDrive28i in spring 2011, an M Sports package will make its debut in this series. It will be available for all engine versions of the compact BMW X model and comprises suspension, exterior and interior components specially developed for this model. These features further enhance the vehicle’s sporty and agile driving qualities and give them a distinctive visual dimension as well. They include sports suspension calibration and 17-inch double-spoke M alloy wheels for even sharper driving dynamics. Alternatively, the M Sports package can be supplied with 18-inch double-spoke M alloy wheels.

The M Sports package for the BMW X1 also features an M Aerodynamics package, door sills with the “M” logo and BMW Individual High Gloss Shadow Line trim for the side window surrounds and roof rails. Also available in conjunction with the M Sports package are the metallic exterior paint colours Alpine White, Le Mans Blue, Sapphire Black, Space Grey, Vermillion Red and Mineral White.

Sports seats upholstered in cloth/alcantara, an M leather-trimmed steering wheel with multifunction buttons and an M footrest for the driver add to the driving pleasure when the BMW X1 is equipped with the M Sports package. The high-end sporty theme is capped off by a BMW Individual roof liner in Anthracite, dark cross-brushed aluminium interior trim, the M gearshift lever for vehicles with six-speed manual transmission and a leather handbrake lever gaiter.

Do you keep wondering when the BMW X1 compact crossover will make it to the United States (in fact, I know one that works here at egmCarTech and e-mails me at least once a week about the car)? Sadly enough, BMW has delayed the U.S. market launch of the X1 from early 2011 to fall of 201.

Apparently, the plant at which the X1 is produced, the Leipzig, Germany plant, can barely make enough of them for the European market – so adding additional units for the U.S. market is not possible at this point for the German automaker.

But that’s not the case for all of North America. According to BMW spokesman Tom Plucinsky, the X1 will be in Canada early this year as scheduled.

The BMW X1 will come to the United States in the xDrive28i gasoline model. It is powered by a 3.0 6-cylinder making 231-hp and a 199 lb-ft of torque.

Living in the United States we really don’t have a choice to be chased by some fancy, luxurious police car since our law enforcement departments currently have the choice of a Ford Crown Victoria, Dodge Charger or the Chevrolet Impala. Of course all that will change next year when we get an onslaught of some ‘mean’ new police interceptors from Detroit.

Nonetheless, if you live in the UK, you may just end up getting chased by the new 2011 BMW 3-Series and 2011 BMW 5-Series. The German automaker has approved a key supplier for all 52 police forces around the country by National Policing Improvement Agency.

“This is excellent news for BMW and shows the breadth of appeal of the products we sell,” said Tim Abbott, Managing Director of BMW UK. “We have a very strong commitment to the “˜Authorities market” throughout the world and have a very close relationship with the UK”s Police forces. Orders for BMW Police vehicles started as long ago as the mid 1970″s in the UK. This latest news reaffirms our commitment to 21st Century policing.”

The news will see cars such as the BMW 330d Saloon (sedan) and Touring (wagon), 530d Saloon and Touring, all variants of X1, X3 xDrive20d, X5 xDrive30d and xDrive40d, and the R1200 RF-P Police bike all take a high profile role in the fight against crime and speeders on the roads.. Some of the vehicles will also be unmarked and perform less visible policing roles.

Press Release:

BMW ““ the number one choice for the UK”s policing needs

BMW has been approved as a key supplier for all 52 Police forces around the country by the National Policing Improvement Agency. The announcement means some of BMW”s class-leading products will become standard issue to the UK”s Policemen and women as part of the four-year deal.

The news will see cars such as the BMW 330d Saloon and Touring, 530d Saloon and Touring, all variants of X1, X3 xDrive20d, X5 xDrive30d and xDrive40d, and the R1200 RF-P Police bike all take a high profile role in the fight against crime. Some of the vehicles will also be unmarked and perform less visible policing roles.

While the latest 5 Series will be an all-new addition to most Police fleets it is the BMW 330d Saloon Interceptor model that is sure to cause the most interest. Billed as a High Performance Pursuit Vehicle, the modified BMW is capable of a rapid response role while also fulfilling the environmental and running cost demands all forces have to think of too. Full technical details of the car can not be specified for security reasons.

Of the 52 UK Police forces, virtually all operate BMW Authorities products of one form or another, while two thirds operate high-levels and nearly half of those operate with a near BMW High Performance only fleet. When the above models are added to the rest of the BMW Authorities range of specialist vehicles, such as medical and fire tenders, considerable savings through economies of scale can be made in training, tooling and parts.

BMW is unique in offering production line installed special equipment packages for Emergency Warning equipment which importantly can be supported by BMW Service Centres throughout the UK with a three-year BMW warranty. Ordinarily vehicles are built by manufacturers only to be disassembled for the retrospective installation of such equipment. The RESPoNSe (Responder EMERGENCY SERVICE Package official eNabled Systeme) package provides vehicles with a high-level of emergency service role-equipment pre installed allowing for a near “˜Plug & Play” car, thus significantly reducing the time into service and the need for third-parties to start cutting into the vehicle”s wiring harness.

BMW operates a dedicated department with a team of specialists based at the BMW Group International ““ Special Sales Competence Centre. This specialist department is responsible for all BMW Authorities specification vehicles sold and operating as Emergency Service vehicles including cars, motorcycles, MINI and ballistically protected BMW Security and High Security cars.

Looking for the 2011 BMW X1 to hit U.S. showrooms? Well, you’d be glad to know that the model is selling pretty well in other regions of the world. When the BMW X1 made its debut at the 2009 Frankfurt Motor Show, critics were a bit skeptical about the model since it is the first car in what will become the premium small SUV segment.

The X1 has proven the critics wrong and has sold 55,550 units through the first 7 months of 2010. Since its market launch in late-October 2009, BMW has sold over 64,049 units of the 2011 X1.

Click here for more news on the BMW X1.

So even though Jeremy Clarkson is not a fan of the new X1, the model seems to be popular with Europeans in all markets of the region.

Refresher: The BMW X1 will come to the United States in early 2011 and will only available in the xDrive28i gasoline model. It is powered by a 3.0 6-cylinder making 231-hp and a 199 lb-ft of torque.

Even though Jeremy Clarkson thinks that the BMW X1 is complete “rubbish,” sales of the compact crossover have been doing well for the German automaker.

“The BMW X1 has significantly exceeded even our own ambitious expectations: Since its introduction last fall, we have delivered more than 36,000 units to customers,” BMW CEO Norbert Reithofer said that the company’s annual shareholder’s meeting. “Among these customers are plenty of younger people for whom BMW was not a serious option before.”

The BMW X1 will go on sale in the United States in 2011.

Refresher: The BMW X1 will hit markets next year and will be available with three engine choices. Kicking of the lineup is the X1 xDrive20d, which is powered by a 177-hp diesel engine. Second is the X1 xDrive23d, which is powered boy 204-hp turbodiesel. The X1 xDrive28i gasoline model is powered by a 3.0 6-cylinder making 231-hp and a 199 lb-ft of torque. It will be the only model offered in North America.

Jeremy Clarkson has just finished test driving the new BMW X1, which won’t arrive in the United States until 2011, and gave the new German SUV/Crossover one star out of five.

Clarkson writes:

I felt BMW might be able to pull off a bit of a winner, then. It had learnt some lessons with the woeful X3 and it really has got styling worked out these days. Plus, BMWs are almost always better to drive than any of the cars with which they compete.

Sadly, I was to be disappointed. First of all, the X1 looks like a Hyundai that”s been subjected to a thousand years of wind erosion. It”s dreary. And it”s much the same story on the inside, where you are greeted with lots of extremely scratchy plastic and almost no equipment at all.

He wraps up his article by saying: “If it were a book, it would have no plot and a stupid cover and it would fall to pieces in the sun. But it isn”t a book. And neither is it a car. It”s rubbish.”

Gotta love Clarkson. Click here to read his full review.

The 2010 Geneva Motor Show is one auto show that even popular German tuners like to attend to show off their latest creations. AC Schnitzer will be on hand showing an extensive modification range for the new BMW X1 and rather than just offering some visual upgrades, Schnitzer is also offering a nice chunk of power upgrades.

The BMW X1 xDrive23d has been upgraded from 204-hp to 240-hp. The 2.0 d and 1.8 d engines also feature Common Rail injection and a turbocharger, and with the AC Schnitzer tuning package they can make 210 and 171-hp respectively. AC Schnitzer says that performance upgrades are available for both the sDrive and xDrive versions, however, the company didn’t provide any numbers.

As for visual upgrades, AC Schnitzer offers a bunch of modifications to make the X1 look aggressive, but we could’ve done without the hood nostrils.

Press Release:

New Standards in Driving Pleasure
Quality and Emotion: The BMW X1 by AC Schnitzer

The X1 is the latest welcome addition to the compact vehicles segment, and brings the characteristic BMW “Driving Pleasure” to this class. With an extensive range for the BMW X1, the AC Schnitzer version now celebrates its world premiere at the Geneva Motor Show 2010.

The BMW X1 is available with choice of a 6-cylinder petrol engine and three 4-cylinder diesel power plants. Here again, AC Schnitzer is setting totally new standards for driving pleasure in the premium compact segment. The BMW X1 xDrive23d has been upgraded from a 150 kW/204 HP diesel engine with BMW TwinPower Turbo and Common Rail injection to 240 HP. The 2.0 d and 1.8 d units in the BMW X1 also feature Common Rail injection and a turbocharger, and with the AC Schnitzer tuning package achieve 210 and 171 HP respectively. Naturally, the power upgrades are available for both the sDrive and xDrive versions. The AC Schnitzer engine styling including capacity logo is available for vehicles with and without performance upgrade.

Acoustically, the sporting driving experience is enhanced by the AC Schnitzer sports rear silencer for the petrol X1 xDrive 28i (in development). Visual elegance is provided by the chromed “Racing” tailpipe trim which is also available for all other models.

The superb driving behaviour of the BMW X1 with its focus on agility, precision and handling is the direct result of the sophisticated suspension technology used on the extremely solid body structure. AC Schnitzer has built on this and with its suspension spring kit and an aluminium strut brace, ensures the perfect balance between sporting performance and driving comfort.

The AC Schnitzer aerodynamics package is far more than mere decoration, although it harmonises effectively in the overall concept. The front spoiler and rear skirt extension, in combination with the rear roof spoiler, improve downforce and ensure additional ground adhesion. Engine bay venting is optimised by the AC Schnitzer Bonnet Vents. These are enhanced further with chromed centre webs available as an option. In aesthetic terms, the AC Schnitzer aerodynamic conversion emphasises the expressive styling and reveals to the observer on first glance the universal sporting ambitions of the X1 by AC Schnitzer.

Impressive design elements also lend a sporting and youthful note to the interior of the BMW X1 by AC Schnitzer. These elements include silver “Exclusiv” carbon interior trim, illuminated leather gear knob, aluminium gear knobs with or without digital gear display, “Black Line” aluminium cover for the i-Drive system controller, aluminium handbrake handle and pedal set, foot rests and velours foot mats.

The finishing touch comes from a set of attractive wheels, so the X1 retains its stylish appearance not only on twisty or changing terrain, but also outside a fashionable cafe. An ideal choice is the brand-new Type VIII wheel in 19″. The new wheel with its 5 double spokes in BiColor Finish is an evolution of the well-known Type VI wheel, and complements perfectly the styling language of the BMW X1. AC Schnitzer Type IV wheels in silver or in BiColor in 18, 19 or 20 inch, together with the Type VI rim in 18″, complete the range available for the BMW X1.
