While we’ve already seen an image of the upcoming BMW X1 wearing no camouflage at a photo shoot (granted the image was a little choppy and low-res), BMW has dropped four “spy shots” of the upcoming compact SUV.

So far we expect a 2009 Frankfurt Motor show debut later this year.

It has been confirmed by TimesOnline that three engine choices will be offered at launch: the 177-hp and 204-hp diesels from the 320d and 123d respectively, and a 272-hp 3.0L gasoline engine. The latter will make its way over the U.S.; however, we don’t expect BMW to offer any diesel options for the U.S. when the X1 is first launched.

Andrew Frankel of TimesOnline drove the 204-hp diesel model, which he says goes from 0 to 62 mph in 7.3 seconds while returning a fuel-economy of more than 44 mpg (that’s about 37 mpg according to U.S. standards).

2010 will be a pretty busy year for Bayerische Motoren Werke.

On the way is the 2010 BMW 5-Series GT which should enter production this fall with sales to start in the earlier half of 2010. The production version is expected to be offered with a choice of a 272-hp naturally aspirated engine and an updated 326-hp 3.0L twin-turbo 6-cylinder in the U.S.

Also hitting the markets early next year will be the 2010 BMW X1. The compact SUV was recently spotted at photo shoot for the production model. The BMW X1 will go into production later this year at company’s Leipzig plant in Germany.

Following those two models, BMW will introduce the much-anticipated 7-Series Hybrid and the X6 Hybrid crossover.

The BMW X6 Hybrid will feature a two-mode hybrid system that was developed from a partnership with Chrysler, Daimler and GM. It will be mated the xDrive50i’s 4.4L V8 and will offer 20 percent better gas mileage than its gasoline counterpart.

The BMW 7-Series Hybrid will be a mild hybrid system and will carry fuel-saving technologies like a start/stop system. It will have a transmission-mounted electric motor mated to the 750i’s 4.4L turbocharged V8.

We’ll keep you updated as all the models mentioned above make their market debuts.

The BMW X1 prototypes are currently undergoing some extreme cold weather testing and according to Auto Motor und Sport, the smaller and more agile SAV will make its production debut at the 2009 Frankfurt Motor show with sales to begin in Oct. 2009.

Insiders say that the production version of the X1 will be very close to the concept X1 we saw at the 2008 Paris Motor Show. Measuring about 4.50 meters, the X1 will be significantly shorter than its bigger X3 sibling and about 10 centimeters longer than the new BMW 1-Series.

BMW will offer an all-wheel and rear-wheel-drive version of the X1 in Oct. 2009. The 2010 BMW X1 will come with the same engine options from the 1-Series and 3-Series lineup. A 4-cylinder diesel and gasoline engine will also be available. Output will range from 145-hp to 306-hp.

Production will be held at BMW’s Leipzig plant with an estimated 47,000 units to be built in 2010. BMW will increase production to 60,000 units annually in 2013.

Love it or hate it, BMW is making the X1 and it will be going into production next year at the Leipzig plant in Germany. According to BMW insiders, the production X1 will be offered in both four-wheel-drive and rear-wheel drive.

BMW has always stayed away from doing two-wheel-drive versions of its ‘X’ SUVs, but feels that the savings on weight and fuel-economy gains will persuade buyers to purchase a rear-wheel-drive version of the X1.

BMW will also introduce a new badge called ’sDrive’ instead of ‘xDrive’ to differentiate between the two models. All the range topper version of the X1 will feature four-wheel-drive as standard and will be badged with xDrive variants.

Sales will begin in 2010. A hybrid model is also expected by 2011.

Market wise it was a no brainer for BMW; so whether you like it or not, 2010 will mark the year for compact SUVs from BMW. That’s right – a production X1 and Mini Crossover will go on sale in 2010. According to CEO Norber Reithofer, BMW cancelled old product plans like the X7 since they would not have generated enough growth for the brand through 2013.

Reithofer said that both the X1 and MINI Crossman will be volume sellers rather than niche cars like the X6 appealing to few individuals.

The BMW X1 is also rumored to get a hybrid variant by late 2010.

Press Release:

THE FIRST SPORTS ACTIVITY VEHICLE IN THE PREMIUM COMPACT SEGMENT: THE BMW CONCEPT X1

Description in Brief.

Character:

• World debut of a concept BMW X model in the premium compact segment.

• BMW, the founder of the Sports Activity Vehicle segment, is consistently expanding the range of BMW X models.

• Authentic transition of the features and design language typical of a BMW X model into a new class of vehicles. A concept study offering a clear expression of modern style, agility, versatility and premium quality through its design alone.

• As an innovative vehicle concept in the premium compact segment, the BMW Concept X1 sets the standard for cool elegance, modern style, and variable function.

• The BMW Concept X1 offers ample room for spontaneous mobility in many different ways, clearly reflecting the lifestyle of a modern and active target group. Numerous details on the Concept Car provide a clear hint as to the actual production of an appropriate series model within one year.

Exterior design:

• Typical features of a BMW X model combined with elegant, sleek proportions. This alone gives the BMW Concept X1 unique character within the range of BMW X models as a whole.
• The striking frontal view clearly expresses the robust and powerful character of the car by emphasising its sheer width. A floor protection element finished in a different colour gives additional emphasis to the wide track.

• The BMW Concept X1 comes with dual round headlights cut off at the top in the typical style of the BMW brand, complete with a white-coloured horizontal cover at the top edge. The position of the headlights and foglamps brings back the three-eye face of other BMW X models.
• Six contour lines and the three-dimensional shape define the surface design of the engine compartment lid emanating a strong feeling of dynamic performance. The inner lines taper out sharply to the front towards the BMW kidney grille, the outer lines continue into the shoulder contours at the side.

• Through its centre of gravity visibly positioned right in the middle, the small distance between the front axle and the steering wheel, and the almost square contours of the wheel cutouts, the side view of the BMW Concept X1 draws a clear parallel to other BMW X models. Black body surrounds made of a special, robust synthetic material highlight the clear orientation towards the wheels. The sturdy, silver-coloured roof railing extends far to the rear, determining the course of the roofline together with the spoiler at the back.

• Characteristic rear end with L-shaped rear light clusters ensuring a homogeneous light effect thanks to LED light tubes. Raked to a low angle, the rear window gives the BMW Concept X1 a truly sporting touch, the horizontal lines emphasising the sheer width of the vehicle.

• As a special design feature specific to this model, three-dimensional surrounds encompass the headlights and rear light clusters and help to create the special graphics of the side windows.

We saw a video teaser yesterday and today the first official photos of the BMW Concept X1 have hit the internet two days before the 2008 Paris Motor Show opens to the press. Of course while it is called a ”concept,” BMW is known for carrying most, if not all, of the design over to production.

The BMW X1 will enter production next year at BMW’s Leipzig plant in Germany. BMW is predicting on selling 100,000 units annually. The German automaker is hoping to capitalize on the very compact SUV segment since its main competitor, the Audi Q3, is still two years away.

Expect a range of four and six-cylinder turbo-charged direct injection diesel and petrol engines. The U.S. will most likely only get six-cylinders. We’ll have more details as we get them.

Check out more photos after the jump and let us know what you think of the design in the comments section below.
