BMW has announced that it is recalling certain model year 2008-2011 5-Series, 5-Series Gran Turismo, 7-Series, X5, X6 vehicles with a V8 or 12-cylinder turbocharged engine. Apparently there could be an issue with the circuit board for the electric auxiliary water pump that can overheat.

“This could lead to a smoldering of the pump or an engine compartment or vehicle fire,” the NHTSA said in a statement.

BMW said it will start notifying owners later this month and will replace the auxiliary water pump free of charge. The recall consists of over 32,000 vehicles.

Owners can contact BMW Customer Relations and Services at 1-800-525-7417.

A powerful tuning package has been crafted by Turningwerk of Germany for BMW’s large 7-Series L.

The approximately $270,000 makeover boasts 710-hp at 804 lb-ft of torque. The awesome torque-to-horsepower ratio gets you a 0 to 62mph time of 3.5 seconds with a top speed reaches an nice 217.5 mph.

Weight reduction was a big contributor in making this grand vehicle move quickly. Tuningwerk made good use of carbon fiber and carbon-ceramic breaks. A new sport exhaust was also fitted to the car.

With a half of a tank of gas, the curb weight comes in at 4,466lbs. We’re just imagining how much it weighs with a full-tank of gas.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration always finds a way to pop up in our weekly news at some point. So here’s some more! The NHTSA is currently investigating 120,000 2002-2007 E65 and E66 BMW 7-Series over a concern that the car’s parking pawl may not hold the car in park when it is shifted in P, allowing the car to roll away.

The NHTSA posted the notice just today after an owner complained about rollaway incidents with a 2006 7-Series. As some of you may know, the BMW 7-Series allows drivers to select their gears through a steering column mounted, electronically controlled shifter. The system is also designed to automatically park the car, for example when a driver parks the car and shuts it off using the start/stop button without hitting P on the stalk.

There are also reports of similar incidents happening through BMW’s field reports on similarly equipped 7-Series from 2002 to 2008.

No cause to the problem has been found and no deaths or accidents have been reported.

At the turn of the 2012 year, the BMW X6 will have turned three years old, which means that its due for a mid-cycle refresh.

Other than the usual visual and aesthetic changes, the biggest change is a new inline-six diesel. Featuring Tri-Turbo, which means yes, three turbochargers, the 3.0L inline-six will peak at about 400-hp while decreasing overall fuel consumption.

The New X6 model will be called the BMW X6 xDrive50d. Al of the other engine models will also receive updated powerplants for more power and efficiency.

As for a new X6, under the same announcement, BMW said that we could expect a second-generation X6, interally dubbed the F16, in 2014.

The same is being planned for the next-generationBMW 7-Series

Three thieves from Poland stole a significant spread of vehicles about a month ago. Among the goods: a Ferrari 599 GTB Fiorano, a BMW 7-Series, and special edition Bugatti Veyron Grand Sport Sang Bleu.

The cars where stolen from Oberrieden, Switzerland. The goal was to get the cars back to Poland, by way of Germany.

German autobahns offered no cover for the thieves, and police had no trouble picking up two of the three. Unfortunately, the driver of the Veyron managed to scrape the car along a guard rail before he was caught. As for the third driver, he managed to get away by abandoning the Ferrari 599 in Furth, Germany, at a train station. He still has not been caught.

Aside from the obvious charges, the two men that were caught are facing a hefty tax bill. Any smugglers transporting stolen goods through Germany are hit with a 10% tariff and 19% import tax, as a result of their European Union membership.

The taxes tally up to around $522,000, considering the cost of the stolen exotics.

It’s hard to believe that cars only 40 years ago cars had as little as two cogs in their gearboxes. Now you can’t get any less than four in the most basic automobiles. On the other end of the spectrum, Lexus invented the first 8-speed automatic transmission at the debut of the current LS.

BMW soon adopted the 8-speed auto through ZF and is now going to take it a step further. The German make just finished up its annual Innovation Days in Munich after show casing a range of new innovative ideas from their R&D’s coffee breaks.

These ideas include a range of lightweight components and discussions regarding future EV concepts with range-extending turbocharged three-, four- and six-cylinder engines as well as a new adaptive 8-speed transmission that can predict curves and road conditions.

Utilizing GPS mapping, a wireless data connection, Dynamic Stability Control, and front and rear mounted cameras and radar sensors, the transmission will be able to translate this data and actively adjust the shifting pattern and power delivery to best suit the road conditions.

For example, during rough conditions, real-time weather data will be sent to the car and the DSC will detect the coefficient of friction for the road and will restrict power accordingly to avoid wheel spin – interesting.

And if you’re about to bomb a corner, the GPS will detect that next curve and recognize if you’re in Sport mode and will automatically downshift into a lower gear.

BMW didn’t exactly say when this technology would hit production, but we could only guess this kind of technology will be showcased in its flagship, when the next 7-Series will be released.

Mansory has come up with a new look for the BMW 7-Series and while we’re not big fans of tuning cars, we totally absolutely approve of this take on the large Bavarian sedan.

Mansory’s aerodynamic kits adds a new front bumper with integrated LED daytime running lights, a roof spoiler, a new rear apron, diffuser and integrated stainless-steel quad-pipes. The inside of the Mansory BMW 7-Series gets a new sports steering-wheel without a BMW badge (there’s actually no badge at all), upgraded leather or Alcantara with wood or carbon trims.

Click here for more news on the BMW 7-Series.

As a part of the package, Mansory is also offering performance upgrades for the BMW 750i and the BMW 760Li. The upgrade on the BMW 750i pushes the 4.4L twin-turbo V8 to make a total of 483-hp with a maximum torque of 531 lb-ft. The upgrade for the BMW 760Li with a 6.0L twin-turbo V12 pushes output to 631-hp with a peak torque of 678 lb-ft. That allows the Mansory BMW 760Li to go from 0 to 62 mph in 4.2 seconds.

The Mansory BMW 7-Series rides on nice 22-inch wheels wrapped in 265/35R22 performance tires at the front and 295/30R22s at the rear.

Two thieves in Detroit made off with a good score; a 2011 BMW 750xi Sedan worth about $94,000. The car was left idling outside the Westin Book Cadillac, one of the major hotels in Detroit.

The car was part of a fleet sent to Detroit by BMW in order to chauffeur guests and executives around the Motor City during the 2011 NAIAS this past week. As of this morning, police were still looking for the vehicle.

The car was delivered by a valet to be loaded onto an automotive transport truck to be taken back to BMW’s North American headquarters in New Jersey. BMW hold no ill will towards the event or its organizers, and says that this was just an unfortunate incident, and the company remains committed to the event for the future.

According to those ‘sources’ you hear about once in a while that really don’t like being named, BMW is considering a diesel version of the 3-Series and 7-Series for the United States market. Insiders say that the two diesel BMW vehicles have been approved for the U.S. market and should arrive at the end of this year.

While there are no powertrain details available yet, it is speculated that the diesel engine found in the X5 xDrive35d and the 335d will make it into the diesel X3 and 7. The 3.0L turbocharged 6-cylinder diesel is the only diesel approved for BMW in the United States.

Click here for more news on the BMW X3.

If this is true, the X3 xDrive35d is expected to offer better performance and fuel-economy than its bigger X5 xDrive35d brother. The 735d will give BMW a competitor to the recently released Mercedes-Benz S350 Bluetec, which made its debut at the 2011 Detroit Auto Show.

Press Release:

Luxurious broad image: LUMMA Design provides BMW 7 Series with broad-scoped aerodynamics package

Unique wide construction for Munich luxury limousine

Genuine carbon plus 22 inch wheels for enhanced sportiness

Refined aluminium interior

LUMMA Design gives the BMW 7 Series a wider look. The unique aerodynamics package lends the luxury limousine a more self-assured appearance, without neglecting the Munich model’s elegant design or making it come across as flashy. Selected applications made from genuine carbon and 22 inch light alloy wheels ensure that the BMW with its noble finish exhibits independence while staying true to its sportiness. Aluminium in the interior lends an individual touch.

The fact that LUMMA Design has a sense of BMW’s design language already becomes apparent in the front spoiler bumper. The curvature of the bonnet and the kidney front grille find their match in the new LUMMA front, which integrates grid inserts, fog lights and LED daytime running lights. The new shapely look is completed by the cup spoiler sword.

The ten-piece wheels arch extensions are key to the new sporty appearance: the luxury limousine becomes significantly wider, ensuring a dominant appearance. The door attachments and rear apron corners make for harmonious integration of the extension set and the full aerodynamics package.

LUMMA Design offers a set of deep door-sills that has been designed especially for the BMW 7 Series with its extended wheelbase, so as to bridge the parameterisation of the wheels arch extensions.

The aerodynamics package is completed by the new rear diffuser. Besides ensuring additional downforce, the diffuser highlights the sporty aspiration of the refined limousine.

The dynamic appearance of the LUMMA BMW is enhanced even further by the genuine carbon applications produced by the refining experts in Germany. These include exterior mirror caps, the kidney front grille frame, all door handle covers, the boot lid trim and the four-piece pillar trim set for doors and mud guards.

Naturally the wheels also contribute to the more sporty appearance. The impressive 22-inch light alloy rims are fitted with 265/30 high-performance Vredestein tyres in the front and 295/25 in the rear.

In addition, selected LUMMA Design improvements make for an upgraded interior. The aluminium two-piece pedal set with matching footrest provides the driver footwell with a superior look. Foot mats in the colour of the customer’s choice featuring the embroidered LUMMA crest logo are also available for the large BMW, as is a boot mat in any colour, also featuring the embroidered logo.

Except for the deep door-sills, which are provided exclusively for the model with extended wheelbase, the construction extension, carbon applications, wheels and interior components fit all BMW 7 Series models. Obviously the required TÃV approval is included in every LUMMA Design delivery. Alternatively, the upgrade experts will perform the conversion at their head office in Winterlingen, Germany, including TÃV registration.

Using the 6.0L V12 bi-turbo “TwinPower” from BMW, G-Power asked ASA to create a set of turbocharger compressor units that work off the crankshaft, thus increasing output to 715-hp with a maximum torque of 738 lb-ft. Changes were also made to the standard 8-speed transmission. After all the modifications, the G-Power 760i Storm is capable of running a 0-62 mph time of 4.2 seconds, while 0-124 mph takes 11.9. Top speed of the G-Power 760i Storm comes in at a whopping 214 mph.

Other modifications include aerodynamic changes including a new front skirt, bonnet, side skirts, doors, rear diffuser, and rear spoiler. Ride height is dropped by 30mm.

G-Power says that it will only produce 10 units of the 760i Storm.

Press Release:

M-Feeling for the BMW “Luxusliner” – thanks to the G-POWER manufactory

After the large success of the two world record cars G-POWER M5 HURRICANE RS and G-POWER M6 HURRICANE CS which with their 750 hp strong 5,0l V10 bi-compressor engine can be only obtained as a complete vehicle via the G-POWER manufactory, the so-called “G-POWER Supercars” will become an inherent part of the future G-POWER programme. The G-POWER manufactory is a strongly growing business branch of the company G-POWER in which all individually produced complete vehicles, the so-called “G-POWER Supercars” are produced as an inherent part of the G-PWER programme and are entirely made by hand.

The company philosophy of the G-POWER manufactory which solely produces its automobiles in limited edition, is 100% customer dedication as far as the features and the strictly limited edition of the G-POWER Supercars are concerned and also the entire revision of the individual basic engines with the clear objective to produce the strongest and fastest BMW model in the world.

The latest masterpiece and an impressive example for the exceptional performance of the G-POWER manufactory is the G-POWER 760i STORM which now closes a gap in the BMW programme: M-Feeling for the BMW “Luxusliner”.

Due to customer preference, G-POWER, so far predominantly well known on modifying the potent BMW M models, has now focused on the BMW flagship in the luxury segment and developed an overall concept which optimally adjusts aerodynamics, rims and increased engine performance.

The core part of the G-POWER performance enhancement for the 6,0l V12 bi-turbo engine is a substantial modification of both “TwinPower” turbo chargers used by BMW. In co-operation with the compressor manufacturer ASA which can rely on 20 years experience in developing and producing radial compressors (basically, radial compressors are turbo charger compressor units which are put into motion by the crankshaft via a belt driven transmission), the performance of both turbo chargers was significantly improved without affecting their endurance.

As a result, the maximum boost pressure of 0.5 bar (relative) rises to 0.9 bar (relative). Flanking measures at the engine ensure that the increasing boost pressure can also be transformed into according extra power. Therefore, additional 181 hp (133 KW) are gained which enhance the overall performance to strong 725 hp at 5,500 r.p.m and render the maximum torque of 1000 Nm at already 2,000 r.p.m. In order to achieve this impressive extra performance, larger injection valves and an entirely new exhaust system for the reduction of dynamic pressure including the therefore necessary sports catalysers have been added, et al. A re-programmed engine control and significant modifications at BMW´s serial 8-speed transmission perfect the overall package harmoniously.

The enormous performance potential of the BMW V12 bi-turbo engine modified by G-POWER allows the G-POWER 760i driving performances which catapult it into the top range of its vehicle class. The acceleration from 0 to 100 km/h only takes 4.2 seconds. After 11.9 seconds, already 200 km/h are achieved. The top speed is 345 km/h.

But not only due to its enormous performance, the G-POWER 760i STORM propels to the top of its vehicle class, also the visual appearance of the aerodynamics kit which was exclusively developed for the STORM by G-POWER, underlines the exceptional quality of this G-POWER Supercar. Thereby, the aerodynamics pack in the brand-typical design is not only an end in itself, but it also improves the cold air supply to the cooling water and oil coolers at the vehicle front due to the enlarged air inlets at the front skirt and the vent holes in the bonnet. Due to these changes, the overall cooling performance has been increased by approx. 15 percent – a basis for the thermally always harmless performance enhancement.

The most outstanding component of the G-POWER aerodynamics kit for the BMW 760i, is the strikingly styled front skirt made of carbon fibre which entire replaces the original part. It gives the serially unobtrusive front of the current BMW 7-model the necessary aggressiveness which an automobile with 725 hp and a top speed of 345 km/h requires. Due to the elaborate shape, the aerodynamic lifting forces at the front axles were able to be reduced. Another highlight is the G-POWER STORM bonnet made of Kevlar hybrid which has a central Venturi engine compartment ventilation for the operation and two lateral ABS grids for the ventilation when the car stands still and guarantees an improved discharge of hot air from both turbo chargers out of the engine compartment and shapes the new face of the BMW 760i.

The G-POWER full carbon add-ons for the serial side skirts and the doors render a visual harmonious connection between the wheel houses by visually stretching the silhouette of the BMW 7-model. The wheel houses themselves are filled with forged three-part G-POWER SILVERSTONE RS aluminium wheels measuring 9.5×22 and 10.5×22 inches which are equipped with high-performance tyres of the development partner Michelin in the dimensions 265/30 ZR 22 at the front axle and 295/25 ZR 22 at the rear axle. Set up this way, the G-POWER 760i STORM always renders an optimal traction and a sporty handling which is additionally improved by the G-POWER sports spring set and a lowering by 30 mm.

At the rear, a full carbon rear spoiler and a full carbon diffuser which elegantly emphasise the 4 x 100 mm end pipes with integrated G-POWER logo generate more downforce at the rear axle and at the same time visually enhance the back section.

G-POWER refines the interior of the BMW 760i with exclusive accessories such as an ergonomically shaped sports steering wheel, a speedometer in G-POWER design and fine carbon rails for the side casing, central console and dashboard. Further customer wishes for exclusive interiors can always be fulfilled by the G-POWER manufactory with all possible leather- and ultra-suede colours.

The G-POWER 760i STORM is only available in a strictly limited small edition of only 10 automobiles world-wide from the G-POWER manufactory in Autenzell.

Seems likes Toyota isn’t the only one having recall issues. The 2010 BMW 550i Gran Turismo and the 2009-2010 BMW 7-Series are both being recalled by the German automaker, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.

It’s nothing as serious as Toyota’s pedal and brake issues so don’t get scared if you own either of the BMW vehicles.

Basically, the recall is due to a failure to comply with Federal Motor Vehicle Safety standard No. 110, “Tire Selection and Rims.” The tire pressure label on the vehicles incorrectly indicates the vehicle”s seating capacity as five passengers when its actual seating capacity is four. In the 7-Series the recall refers only to the luxury package that adds the option of “rear comfort seats,” which adds power seats and reduces rear-seating capacity from three to two.

BMW hasn’t set a date on when the recall will begin but owners can call BMW at 800-831-1117 for more information.
