Here is another BMW rumor for you Bayerische enthusiasts. Word on the street is that BMW is considering to launch a new 1-Series hatchback model next summer called the M135i. The news comes from the same Netherlands dealer presentation that brought us news of a 318-hp tri-turbo M550d diesel.

Rumors suggest that the new BMW M135i will be powered by the company’s N55 inline 6-cylinder engine making around 320-hp. That’s just 15-hp less than the new BMW 1-Series M Coupe.

The BMW M135i is also reported to be offered with all-wheel-drive – a new for the 1-Series.

Hopefully, BMW continues to offer the 1-Series M Coupe next year.

Side Note: At the 2011 Frankfurt Motor Show in September, BMW revealed the 2012 1-Series Performance Package (pictured above), which kicks up output to 320-hp.

Just last week, we’ve revealed a new package for BMW 1- and 3-Series buyers in the UK. Made to pay homage to the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic games, the US will too receive Performance Edition Packages as well, but just for the 335i sedan and 135i coupe.

Costing only $550, the package features a power increase for the turbocharged N55 inline-six, going up from 300-hp to 320-hp with torque getting a up from 300 lb-ft to 317 torques for the manual and 332 torques for the automatic. The results are 0-60 times that are faster by 0.2 seconds and 50mph to 70 mph comes 0.5 seconds quicker.

Blacked out kidney grills and a BMW Performance badge will help differentiate the Performance Edition from standard models and will cost an extra $550. So yes, unfortunately the Performance Editions don’t include the BMW M-Sport packages like they do in Europe.

BMW said that the contents of the BMW Performance Edition will be made available to existing 135i and 335i customers. Pricing to purchase the contents of this edition as a retrofit will be announced in August, 2011.

While you’ll have to look a little closer to see the upgrades on the 2012 BMW 1-Series Coupe and Convertible, BMW says that the car is “now sharper than ever.” Both models will go on sale in spring 2011.

If you take a closer look a the 2012 BMW 1-Series Coupe and Convertible, you’ll notice a new design of the front fascia that incorporates the company’s innovative Air Curtain that counters turbulence near the wheel arches and so reduces the aerodynamic resistance of the vehicle. Other design upgrades include changes to the headlight and tail light clusters.

2012 BMW 1-Series Convertible

Power for the 2012 BMW 128i Coupe and Convertible still comes from a 3.0L inline 6-cylinder engine making 230-hp and 200 lb-ft of torque. The 2012 128i Coupe runs 0-60 mph in 6.7 seconds when mated to a 6-speed automatic and 6.1 seconds with the standard 6-speed manual transmission.

The 2012 BMW 135i Coupe and Convertible continue with a 3.0L inline 6-cylinder twin-scroll turbocharged from the 2011 model year. Known as the N55 engine, the unit produces a total of 300-hp and 300 lb-ft of torque. When mated to a 6-speed manual transmission, the 2012 BMW 135i goes from 0-60 mph in 5.1 seconds. The 2012 BMW 135i models can also be equipped with a 7-speed dual-clutch transmission allowing 0-60 mph to come in 5 seconds flat.

Prices for the 2012 BMW 128i and the 2012 BMW 135i will be announced closer to launch, although we don’t expect much of a change from the 2011 model year.

Press Release:

THE 2012 BMW 1 SERIES COUPE

Targeted Innovations Update BMW 1 Series Coupe.

Woodcliff Lake, NJ – BMW today announced several modifications to the 2012 BMW 1 Series Coupe that accentuate efficiency and premium quality. The unmistakable profile of the 1 Series Coupe, which represents the purest expression of BMW DNA is now sharper than ever. The new design of the front fascia on the 128i includes BMW’s innovative Air Curtain that counters turbulence near the wheel arches and so reduces the aerodynamic resistance of the vehicle. New exterior design accents have been incorporated into the headlight and tail light clusters. In the interior, new switches and controls have a more refined look and feel. The updated 1 Series Coupe will go on sale this Spring.

In 2008 BMW introduced the 1 Series to the US, an authentic performance coupe that drew inspiration from the iconic BMW 2002 model of some 40 years ago. As perhaps the next BMW legend, the 1 Series Coupe represents the core BMW philosophy of pure performance, compact dimensions, and premium design. By combining sporty rear-wheel-drive dynamics, agile handling, powerful engines and seating for four, the 2012 1 Series Coupe continues to reinvent the niche that the legendary BMW 2002 created.

Powerful engines, the rear-wheel drive typical of the brand and inspirational agility make the BMW 1 Series Coupe stand out from the crowd. It possesses characteristics unique in the compact premium vehicle segment.

With these updates, the BMW 1 Series Coupe develops further as one of the most desirable Ultimate Driving Machines® in the business. Two versions are available: the 128i Coupe and the 135i Coupe. Each has been enhanced to improve convenience and comfort for the 1 Series’ fourth model year.

Powered by a 3.0-liter, 230 horsepower inline-6 engine that generates 200 lb-ft of torque, the 128i Coupe features BMW’s Valvetronic throttle-less intake technology and aluminum/magnesium construction-core elements of BMW’s EfficientDynamics.

The 2012 BMW 135i features BMW’s newest, 3.0-liter inline-6 engine. Equipped with a single, twin-scroll turbocharger and BMW’s revolutionary Valvetronic throttle-less intake technology, the engine produces 300 horsepower and 300 lb-ft of torque. Referred to internally as the “N55″, the engine reaches peak torque at 1,200 rpm and maintains peak torque all the way to 5,000 rpm. With High Precision direct gasoline injectors, optimum performance and fuel efficiency are achieved with even faster engine response across the entire engine speed range. For the 135i Coupe, acceleration from 0-60 mph is accomplished with the standard 6-speed manual transmission in 5.1 seconds.

The 135i can be equipped with BMW’s 7-speed Double Clutch Transmission (DCT), as featured on the BMW Z4 Roadster. Equipped with DCT, the 135i Coupe will accomplish the 0-60 mph sprint in a scorching 5.0 seconds. A 6-speed Steptronic automatic remains optional on the 128i. So equipped, the 128i Coupe runs 0-60 mph in 6.7 seconds, or 6.1 seconds with the standard 6-speed manual transmission.

Innovative Aerodynamics: Air Curtains.

Consistency between form and function is crucial to engineers at BMW who seek perfect balance of various aerodynamic factors in the wind tunnel. As a result, the new Air Curtain is BMW’s latest aerodynamic innovation. Introduced first on the BMW 1 Series M Coupe, the Air Curtain will now be a standard feature on the 128i Coupe. The Air Curtain improves air flow around the front wheel arches with the benefit of significantly reduced turbulence. The 128i Coupe can also be equipped with special Aero Wheels to further enhance the performance of the Air Curtain system.

This innovative feature consists of openings in the outer section of the lower front fascia that route high-pressure air through ducts at each front corner. The ducts are approximately 10 x 3 centimeters wide and are designed to channel air to openings at the front of each wheel arch, where it is discharged through a very narrow opening at high speed. The escaping air stream covers the side of the front wheels like a curtain, thereby reducing aerodynamically unfavorable turbulence around the rotating wheels.

Air Curtain has a key role to play in the development of future aerodynamic innovations. An example of the air curtain principle was first presented in the concept study BMW Vision EfficientDynamics at the International Motor Show (IAA) in Frankfurt in 2009, and the developers of the BMW 1 Series M Coupe took on the pioneering task of applying this element to a production vehicle. To do so, they utilized the unique capabilities of the new full-scale “rolling road” Aerolab wind tunnel at the BMW Group’s new Aerodynamic Testing Center. Now it has been added to the 128i Coupe.

Handsome looks with sporting intentions

The 2012 1 Series Coupe combines unique, dynamic and unmistakable design elements with a powerful and muscular body. The greenhouse with its characteristic “Hofmeister kink” is moved rearward and offers a particularly nimble look with its long hood. The short overhangs, long wheelbase and large frameless doors sit on a body with a striking shoulder line for a modern interpretation of BMW’s characteristic look. On the 135i Coupe, an M Aerodynamic Kit is standard.

The 1 Series boasts aggressive rear end styling. The trunklid has an integrated spoiler chiselled into the rear end of the car to accentuate the short rear section. On the 135i, an additional lip spoiler provides greater downforce on the rear end at high speeds.

The individual sections within the L-shaped rear taillights give the vehicle a lower, sportier look. Horizontal elements integrated in the rear light clusters offer a homogeneous lighting effect. When equipped with Adaptive Xenon headlights (standard on 135i), these horizontal elements are powered by light-emitting diodes (LEDs). This light design, as found on other BMW models, makes the BMW 1 Series Coupe stand out at night. Also, the Adaptive Brake Lights, which operate in two stages relative to brake application force, are yet another feature typical of BMW with the benefit of added safety.

The standard Adaptive Xenon headlights (optional on the 128i) complete with integrated Cornering Lights make driving in the dark safer than ever. The daytime running lights function in typical BMW style with two corona rings on each headlight unit enhances the perception of the car under normal and “murky” light conditions.

Luxurious interior appointments with today’s technology

The innovative interior design incorporates high-quality and sophisticated trim elements with luxurious upholstery and color choices. A 60/40 split rear seat is standard. The control console for the entertainment and air conditioning functions is integrated smoothly and harmoniously into the dashboard through its soft radii and flowing surfaces. Added in 2009, a Heated Steering Wheel is included in the optional Cold Weather Package for the 128i Coupe, and is available as a stand-alone option on the 135i Coupe (Cold Weather Package required). BMW’s iDrive controller featured in the optional Navigation system is integrated into the center console, again following BMW’s philosophy of good ergonomic design. Galvanized pearl gloss surfaces adorn the interior door handles, the glove compartment handle, the radio’s rotary knob, the knobs of the automatic air conditioning system, the iDrive Controller, and the ornamental trim strips featured on the sports steering wheel.

The BMW 1 Series Coupe is available with a choice of two upholstery options-sporty and comfortable Leatherette or rich Boston Leather. Boston Leather upholstery adds further style to the high-quality impression of the interior. For 2012, a new interior trim option is available. All the trim elements may be ordered in Gloss White for a sporty and fresh look. The optional Sport Package includes sports bucket seats with enhanced side support which are available in highly distinctive leatherette materials or Boston leather.

High-tech suspension with Electronic differential

In typical BMW configuration, the BMW 1 Series Coupe transmits power to the rear wheels exclusively. This concept– engine at the front, drive wheels at the rear – guarantees optimum traction, near-perfect weight distribution front-to-rear, excellent directional stability, and predictable handling.

The 1 Series Coupe has a sophisticated suspension system with an aluminum double-pivot front suspension and a five-link fully independent rear suspension in lightweight steel. BMW’s Dynamic Stability Control (DSC) also includes a Dynamic Traction Control (DTC) function that provides electronic intervention to prevent loss of vehicle control, but at a higher threshold before activation. This allows the driver to experience more spirited driving on dry roads and offers more flexibility when driving in more challenging conditions such as in snow. If the driver desires, both DSC and DTC can be disabled entirely. Optional Active Steering – a variable ratio steering system exclusive to BMW – is available only on the 135i Coupe. In addition to its duties as a safety system, the DSC system on the 135i Coupe is designed specifically to enhance performance-oriented driving.
The rear differential on the 1 Series comes from a new generation of final drives optimized for running smoothness and fuel efficiency. Featuring double-helical ball bearings for the first time, the differential runs at an even lower operating temperature reached more quickly than before thanks to the reduction of fluid required in the differential. Electronic rear brake management is always used to simulate a differential lock for stronger acceleration in turns and low-traction conditions.

The front suspension on the BMW 1 Series is also built to a unique standard in its competitive group. The double-pivot spring and strut front suspension with its anti-roll bar, is made largely of aluminum and offers an optimum combination of stiffness and low weight. The stable track control arms and thrust rods, as well as near-perfect wheel positioning, make an important contribution to the car’s driving dynamics.

M-inspired design for the M Sport Package

Model year 2009 saw the introduction of a new M Sport Package, available on both models of the 1 Series Coupe. Features of the M Sport Package include an Aero kit for reduced lift at speed (standard on 135i) , an increased top speed limiter, better brake cooling, and enhanced aesthetics while the Sports Suspension offers higher traction and reduced body roll with unique wheels and performance tires. On the 135i Coupe, the Sports Suspension also includes a high-performance brake system incorporating 6-piston fixed calipers on the front and 2-piston calipers at the rear. Additionally, the M Sport Package for both models includes BMW Individual high-gloss Shadowline exterior trim, sport seats, BMW Individual anthracite headliner, and M branded trim components including driver footrest, gearshift knob (for manual transmission), and door sills. Finally, LeMans Blue Metallic exterior paint is available exclusively when the M Sport Package is ordered.

High safety standards exceed international requirements

No less than six airbags come standard within the 2011 BMW 1 Series Coupe for optimum protection of the car’s occupants. The advanced frontal airbags are activated in stages relative to impact severity while the side airbags integrated into the sides of the front seat backrests reduce the risk of injury at chest and hip levels in side impact situations. HPS (Head Protection System) side curtain airbags fitted in the roof lining protect both the occupants on the front seats and the passengers at the rear. The 2012 BMW 1 Series Coupe also comes with crash-optimized seats with active headrests that significantly reduc the risk of neck injury in an impact from the rear.

All seats within the 1 Series Coupe are fitted with three-point inertia-reel seat belts and headrests, with the front seat belts fastened on the frames of the driver’s and front passenger’s seats, keeping the belt in an optimum position around the occupant’s hips regardless of seat height or for-aft seat adjustment. Also, the driver’s pedals move back automatically with a predetermined amount of deformation in the event of a frontal collision so that the risk of driver foot injury is reduced. And last but not least, the rear seats come standard with LATCH attachments for child seats.

BMW ConnectedDrive Innovations: Advanced on-board use of mobile phones and music players.

Beginning with September production there are enhancements to BMW Assist with Bluetooth and the iPod/USB Adapter. These enhancements extend the functionality through improved integration of mobile devices into the vehicle. These new features are made possible by hardware advances. (All Models)

BMW Assist with Extended Bluetooth

Tangible results of these efforts include the recycling of bumper cladding into other vehicle components; water-based paint color coats and powder clear coats; near-future availability of hydrogen-powered models; and various design and engineering elements that help make BMWs easier to dismantle at the end of their service life.

THE 2012 BMW 1 SERIES CONVERTIBLE

BMW 135i Convertible Receives Exciting Upgrades for 2012.

Woodcliff Lake, NJ – BMW today announced several modifications to the 2012 BMW 1 Series Convertible that accentuate efficiency and premium quality. The unmistakable profile of the 1 Series Convertible, which represents the purest expression of BMW DNA is now sharper than ever. The new design of the front fascia includes BMW’s innovative Air Curtain that counters turbulence near the wheel arches and so reduces the aerodynamic resistance of the vehicle. New exterior design accents have been incorporated into the headlight and tail light clusters. In the interior, new switches and controls have a more refined look and feel. The updated 1 Series Convertible will go on sale this Spring.

For drivers whose definition of Joy includes wind in the face and sunshine above, the BMW 1 Series Convertible continues the tradition established by the iconic BMW 2002 sport sedan. The essence of such driving purity – a responsive inline-6 engine perfectly positioned within a rear-drive chassis to provide balanced, sporty dynamics – is at the heart of this compact four-seat convertible. For the 2012 model year, two versions are available with inline-6 power: the 128i and the 135i.

Powered by a 3.0-liter, 230 horsepower inline-6 engine that generates 200 lb-ft of torque, the 128i Convertible features BMW’s Valvetronic throttle-less intake technology and aluminum/magnesium construction-core elements of BMW’s EfficientDynamics.

Refered to internally as the “N55″, the engine reaches peak torque at 1,200 rpm and maintains peak torque all the way to 5,000 rpm. With High Precision direct gasoline injectors, optimum performance and fuel efficiency are achieved with even faster engine response across the entire engine speed range. For the 135i Convertible, acceleration from 0-60 mph is accomplished with the standard 6-speed manual transmission in 5.4 seconds.

The 135i can be equipped with BMW’s 7-speed Double Clutch Transmission (DCT), as featured on the BMW Z4 Roadster. Equipped with DCT, the 135i Convertible will accomplish the 0-60 mph sprint in a scorching 5.3 seconds. A 6-speed Steptronic automatic remains o ptional on the 128i. So equipped, the 128i Convertible runs 0-60 mph in 7.0 seconds, or 6.4 seconds with the standard 6-speed manual transmission.

Innovative Aerodynamics: Air Curtains.

Consistency between form and function is crucial to engineers at BMW who seek perfect balance of various aerodynamic factors in the wind tunnel. As a result, the new Air Curtain is BMW’s latest aerodynamic innovation. Introduced first on the BMW 1 Series M Coupe, the Air Curtain will now be a standard feature on the 128i Convertible. The Air Curtain improves air flow around the front wheel arches with the benefit of significantly reduced turbulence. The 128i Convertible can also be equipped with special Aero Wheels to further enhance the performance of the Air Curtain system.

Now it has been added to the 128i Convertible.

Distinctive BMW Convertible appearance

In a mere 22 seconds-even on the move at speeds up to 25 miles per hour-occupants of the 1 Series Convertible can go from encapsulated comfort to top-down exhilaration. If conditions dictate, the electro-hydraulically-operated softtop can be raised within the same 22 seconds, producing a distinctive silhouette enhanced by long frameless doors. The characteristic features of the BMW kidney-shaped grill, front skirt, door sills and rear skirt are identical to those of the 1 Series Coupe.

The standard softtop is available in either black or taupe cloth, but it is the optional Moonlight Black version which is unique to the 1 Series Convertible. Interwoven with fine shiny metallic fibers, this distinctive top produces a shimmery metallic silver appearance in sunlight. The visual effect enhances the convertible’s exciting range of nine colors which includes an exclusive hue: Cashmere Silver Metallic.

A distinctive feature of the 1 Series Convertible is the flared shoulder line which runs parallel to the road. This shoulder line flows from the hood past the A pillar to the trunk lid, forming a surface which encompasses the entire interior, giving the impression of a boat deck.
The view from the rear is influenced by the position of the softtop: with the top lowered, completely concealed in the tail, the look is flat and elegant; the appearance with the top up is broad shouldered. The trunk lid has an integrated spoiler chiseled into the rear end of the car to accentuate the short rear section. On the 135i, an additional lip spoiler provides greater downforce on the rear end at high speeds.

The individual sections within the L-shaped rear taillights give the vehicle a lower, sportier look. Horizontal lights integrated in the rear light clusters offer a homogeneous lighting effect with the help of light-emitting diodes (LEDs). This light design, as found on other BMW models, makes the BMW 1 Series Convertible stand out at night. Also, the Adaptive Brake Lights operating in two stages in relation to brake application force are yet another feature typical of BMW, with the additional benefit of extra safety on the road.

The standard (on the 135i) Adaptive Xenon Headlights (optional on the 128i), complete with integrated cornering lights, make driving in the dark safer than ever. The daytime running light function, in typical BMW style, uses the four corona rings around each headlight to enhance the visibility of the car under normal and “murky” light conditions.

Convertible interior features technology enhanced comfort, convenience

Two unique BMW 1 Series Convertible features provide increased driver and passenger comfort, thus improving the overall experience regardless of the top’s position. The optional Boston leather incorporates BMW’s Sun Reflective Technology where pigments worked into the upholstery mitigate the effect of the sun’s ultraviolet rays. Excessive heating of the seats and armrest is diminished, especially for darker interior colors. The overall effect can produce surface temperatures some 20 degrees Fahrenheit below a comparable “normal” leather interior.

The standard upholstery is sporty and comfortable Leatherette, which is also the covering on the optional Sport Package’s sport seats with enhanced side support (Boston leather can be selected for this package).

The climate-control system in the 1 Series Convertible has an additional convertible mode (compared to the system in the BMW 1 Series Coupe) designed for open-roof conditions. The three standard modes; gentle, medium and intensive, react primarily to interior sensors, while the convertible mode reacts less to interior temperature and more to the exterior temperature and sunlight factors to establish the intensity of the ventilation.

Turbulence in the roof-down cabin can be reduced by an available wind deflector which can be affixed to the sides of the vehicle with a few adjustments. The wind deflector allows for conversation at normal sound levels and the ability to enjoy the wide variety of audio and communication offerings which include SIRIUS satellite radio, HD radio, the optional Premium Sound system, and Bluetooth. For simple and straightforward connection of an MP3 player, an auxiliary input jack is standard and a USB port for direct control of an Apple iPod or iPhone media player is available as an option.

The control console for the entertainment and climate-control functions is integrated smoothly and harmoniously into the dashboard through its soft radii and flowing surfaces. With the optional navigation system, the iDrive controller is integrated in the center console, following BMW’s characteristic philosophy of full driver control at all times. Galvanized pearl gloss surfaces adorn the interior door handles, the glove compartment handle, the radio’s rotary knobs, the knobs of the automatic climate control system, the iDrive controller, and the ornamental trim strips featured on the sport steering wheel.

Spacious trunk supplemented by folding seat backs and storage bag

An active couple can carry their gear, regardless of the season, thanks to the generous trunk space offered by the 1 Series Convertible. Two golf bags will fit in the trunk of the 1 Series Convertible – even with the top down! Lowering the soft top produces a storage space that is 8 cubic-feet, which does not include the optional large storage bag that extends into the passenger compartment and can accommodate two snow boards or a golf bag without soiling the upholstery. A zippered opening allows access into the storage bag from within the passenger compartment.

High-tech suspension with newly-developed differential

In typical BMW configuration, the BMW 1 Series Convertible transmits power to the rear wheels exclusively. This concept– engine at the front, drive wheels at the rear – guarantees optimum traction, near-perfect weight distribution front-to-rear, excellent directional stability, and predictable handling.

The 1 Series Convertible has a sophisticated suspension system with an aluminum double-pivot front suspension and a five-link fully independent rear suspension in lightweight steel. Optional Active Steering – a variable ratio steering system exclusive to BMW – is available on the 135i Convertible. In addition to its duties as a safety system, the DSC system on the 135i Convertible is programmed specifically to enhance performance-oriented driving.

The upcoming BMW M version of the 1-Series (aka M1) is expected to make some 345-hp from an updated version of the N55 engine. However, while you wait for BMW to debut an M1 (if they ever do), a company by the name of Superchips is offering a performance boosting ECU remap for the 135i model.

“Careful optimization of ignition, fuelling and turbo boost settings via combination of extensive chassis dyno testing and road validation has produced a Superchips remap that elevates the performance of the 135i onto a different plane,” Superchips says.

What kind of a different plane? An increase of 49-hp and a boost of 52 lb-ft of torque. That brings the total output of a BMW 135i to 360-hp and a maximum torque of 336 lb-ft. While Superchips has only dyno tested the car at its own headquarters, it has yet to confirm any performance figures. Either way, we expect it to be much better than the 135i’s 0-60 mph time of 5.3 seconds (top speed of 155 mph is left untouched).

Those interested in the upgrade can head over to Superchips at its UK dealer network with a total of £445.00 ($640 USD) in their pocket. Not a bad deal at all.

BMW has repeatedly denied any plans of doing an M version of the 1-Series that would most likely be known as the M1 – however, teasers, rumors and spy shots of the car keep popping up on the web. The latest spy shots by Bridge to Gantry show a heavily modified 1-Series hitting up the Nurburgring (we also have a short 9 second video posted after the jump).

Last we heard anything, it was reported that BMW has no plans to do an M version of the 1-Series but you can definitely expect something like the 135is like the 335is we saw at the 2010 New York Auto Show.

Only time will tell – but the way we think of it if BMW can do an M version of the X5 and X6, they can definitely justify an M version of the 1-Series

Press Release:

2011 Arrives Early for BMW – MY2011: Enhanced Performance and Efficiency, Value Packages and No Price Increase.

MY2011: Enhanced Performance and Efficiency, Value Packages and No Price Increase.

Woodcliff Lake, NJ ““ January 25, 2010″¦ BMW has announced an early, exciting start to its 2011 model year in the United States. Most BMW vehicles receive minor changes for MY2011 in the form of options and new or revised packages, but some models are either all-new (for example, the new BMW 5 Series sedan and BMW ALPINA B7) or substantially updated (3 Series Coupe and Convertible). For existing models, what will not change for the start of the MY2011 are base Manufacturer Suggested Retail Prices.

Highlight: Expansion of “Value Packages” for 1 and 3 Series Models
In 2009, BMW introduced a “Value Package” ““ a $0.00 (No Charge) option that included leather upholstery and the integrated iPod adapter on the 5 Series and 328i/xi Sedans. As expected, the Value Package proved to be very popular, and as such, the concept is being extended to additional models. The $0.00 Value Package again includes leather upholstery and the iPod adapter as its key components but may also include several additional options, depending on the model.
(Journalist note: Details are listed in Appendix i)

Highlight: New “Convenience Package” Available for 1 and 3 Series
Throughout 2009 BMW spent time talking to Dealers and Client Advisors about possible ways to improve our option offering and the value of our package structure. Based on this feedback from Dealers and Client Advisors on, BMW has developed “Convenience Package” for the 1 and 3 Series for MY 2011. This package brings considerable value to a number of options that share the theme of Convenience and are typically ordered together anyway. The Convenience Package content varies depending on the model but always includes the Alarm System, Comfort Access (keyless entry) and Park Distance Control. It retails for as low as $1,000 on the 135i Coupe and Convertible.
(Journalist note: Details are listed in Appendix ii)

Highlight: New Inline 6 Cylinder Twin-Scroll Turbo Engine (N55)
Beginning with MY2011 production, most models currently utilizing the twin turbo inline 6 cylinder N54 engine will switch to the new single twin-scroll inline 6 cylinder N55 engine. The new engine shares the same aluminum block as the previous engine but now uses a new cylinder head with BMW VALVETRONIC combined with a single twin scroll type turbo to deliver faster response and more efficiency. The performance figures remain the same at 300hp and 300 lb-ft torque but the efficiency improves by an impressive 7%. The new engine will be installed in the 135i Coupe and Convertible, the 335i Sedan, Coupe and Convertible, the new 535i Sedan when it arrives later this year, the 535i Gran Turismo arriving this spring and finally, the X6 xDrive35i.

The 300hp version of the twin-turbo N54 engine will continue to be offered in the Z4 sDrive35i and upgraded versions of the N54 will power the 740i/Li, Z4 sDrive35is, and the 335is Coupe/Convertible.

1 Series Coupe/Convertible
The 2011 BMW 1 Series Coupe goes on sale this April with several improvements. In addition to the Value and Convenience Packages described above, the Cold Weather Package has been enhanced with a heated steering wheel and the retail price has been increased $150 from $600 to $750. A Harman Kardon Surround Sound System replaces the HiFi System Professional with no change in retail price ($875). In line with the very sporty nature of the 135i Coupe/Convertible, the 7-speed Double Clutch Transmission (DCT) replaces the STEPTRONIC automatic transmission with an option price of $1,575. The STEPTRONIC 6 speed automatic transmission will continue to be available on the 128i Coupe/Convertible for a retail price of $1,375.

Base MSRP (including $875 Destination & Handling) for all the 1 Series models remain unchanged for MY2011. The 128i Coupe and 135i Coupe start at $30,025 and $36,925, respectively. The 128i Convertible and 135i Convertible start at $35,075 and $41,225, respectively.

3 Series Sedan
The 2011 BMW 3 Series Sedan goes on sale this spring, and each model features changes worthy of mention. Headlining the news is BMW”s all-new 300hp inline-6 engine for the 335i Sedan. BMW”s enthusiast-celebrated 6-speed manual transmission remains standard, and the 6-speed STEPTRONIC automatic transmission remains optional for $1,375. New shift paddles (left-shift down, right-shift up) for the STEPTRONIC may be added to the Sport steering wheel for $100 when the $2,150 Sport Package is ordered.

For the first time since its introduction, the BMW 335d Sedan is now available with the
M Sport Package for $3,750. On all 3 Series models, the optional Harman Kardon Surround Sound System replaces BMW”s HiFi Professional System.

The 328i Sedan and 335i Sedan start at $34,025 and $41,475, respectively, including $875 Destination & Handling. The 328i xDrive Sedan and 335i xDrive Sedan start at $36,025 and $43,475, respectively, including Destination & Handling. The first BMW ALPINA B7 was offered as a limited edition for the 2007 and 2008 model years. Newly interpreted and based on the current BMW 7 Series platform, the B7 will again set the benchmark in terms of performance, refinement, technology, luxury and exclusivity.

Yielding exquisite levels of power and torque from the twin-turbocharged 4.4 liter V8, and in conjunction with the electronically-adjustable suspension with active roll stabilization, the new B7 promises to offer a spectrum of driving experiences so broad as to be unheard of in this class of automobiles. The evolution of the traditional 20-spoke 21″ ALPINA CLASSIC wheels underlines the fresh design language found throughout the B7 and imparts to it a distinctive appearance and powerful stance.

The B7 sedan is equipped with BMW”s twin-turbocharged 4.4 liter, all-aluminum, High Precision Direct Injection V-8 engine which has been enhanced by ALPINA and is capable of producing 500 (373kW) horsepower and 516 lb-ft (700Nm) of torque. The spoilers reduce lift at the front by 30% and rear by15%. The exhaust system”s two double tailpipes are seamlessly integrated into the rear bumper. Based on the 5th-generation BMW 7 Series, this unique car sets new standards for performance and efficiency in the premium luxury class.

The symbiosis of a twin-turbocharged V-8 engine with a 3-phase synchronous electric motor gives the BMW ActiveHybrid 7 a combined output of 455 hp and maximum torque of 515 lb-ft from 2000 ““ 3000 rpm. Power is transmitted via an 8-speed automatic transmission with the electric motor positioned between the engine and the torque converter. The electric motor receives its supply of energy from a lithium-ion battery developed specifically for this automobile.

The BMW ActiveHybrid 7 accelerates to 60 mph in 4.7 seconds, while delivering fuel economy approximately 15% better than the 750i and 750Li.
Press Release:

The Top Performers in the Compact Class: New Generation of Engines in the BMW 135i Coupe and the BMW 135i Convertible.

Munich . The by far most sporting and dynamic models in the compact segment are now increasing their leadership in terms of driving dynamics and efficiency. Starting immediately the BMW 135i Coupe and the BMW 135i Convertible come with a straight-six power unit of the latest generation for the first time combining BMW TwinPower Turbo Technology, High Precision Injection and fully variable VALVETRONIC valve management, all interacting with one another to set new standards for economy with the highest level of performance.

In conjunction with the seven-speed double-clutch gearbox (DKG) featuring Sport Automatic available as an option for the first time in the BMW 1 Series as of March 2010, these superior technologies offer a further significant reduction of fuel consumption and emissions on these top-flight performers, setting up new records in acceleration and dynamic performance.

The top engine featured in both versions of the BMW 1 Series develops maximum output of 225 kW/306 hp at 5,800 rpm from a capacity of three litres, combining spontaneous and direct response with unleashed free-revving driving qualities. Peak torque of the six-cylinder is 400 Newton-metres/295 lb-ft delivered from just 1,200 rpm all the way to 5,000 rpm.

The seven-speed double-clutch gearbox with Sport Automatic shifting gears without the slightest interruption in power and torque, is likewise designed and built for dynamic performance of the highest standard.

Sport Automatic offers not just the option to shift gears manually on the electronic gear selector lever or via the shift paddles on the steering wheel, but also the usual comfort and convenience of a BMW automatic transmission.

The combination of these two innovations in a compact car naturally guarantees driving pleasure of a new standard never seen before. Accelerating from 0 ““ 60 mph in just 5.0 and from 0 ““ 100 km/h in 5.2 seconds, the BMW 135i Coupe with its double-clutch gearbox offers the same supreme standard as a thoroughbred sports car even more than in the past.

A truly unique achievement in this performance class is average fuel consumption in the EU test cycle of 8.5 litres/100 kilometres (equal to provisional combined of approx. 22 mpg US), almost one litre/100 kilometres better than the comparable figure in the former model with its six-speed automatic transmission.

This significant reduction of fuel consumption, together with acceleration to 60 mph improved once again by 0.2 seconds, clearly confirms the progress made through BMW EfficientDynamics with this new engine and transmission technology.

The BMW 135i Convertible with double-clutch gearbox accelerates to 60 mph in 5.3 seconds and reaches 100 km/h in 5.5 seconds. Average fuel consumption in the EU test cycle is 8.6 litres/100 km (provisional combined US figure approx 22 mpg), which is 0.8 litres better than on the former model with automatic transmission.

On the same fuel consumption, this is better even than the acceleration and consumption figures of the respective models with a six-speed manual gearbox: the hand-shifted version of the BMW 135i Coupe accelerates to 60 mph in 5.1, the manual-gearbox version of the BMW 135i Convertible in 5.4 seconds (0 ““100 km/h on the Coupe in 5.3, on the Convertible in 5.6 seconds).

At the same time the combination of the BMW TwinPower Turbo engine with the manual gearbox also newly developed likewise enhances all-round efficiency by a significant margin. In practice, this means a reduction of average fuel consumption by the BMW 135i Coupe to 8.5 litres and a reduction on the BMW 135i Convertible to 8.6 litres/100 kilometres (provisional combined US figure for both models approx. 22 mpg).

Outstanding innovation for optimised efficiency: first-ever VALVETRONIC on a turbocharged engine.

Outstanding innovation for optimised efficiency: first-ever VALVETRONIC on a turbocharged engine.
The new straight-six power unit of the BMW 135i Coupe and the BMW 135i Convertible owes its exceptional efficiency to the first-ever combination of BMW TwinPower Turbo Technology, High Precision Injection, and VALVETRONIC valve management.

The turbocharger system following the twin-scroll principle separating the ducts for three cylinders at a time both in the exhaust gas manifold and in the turbocharger, as well as VALVETRONIC developed to an even higher standard of efficiency, contributes accordingly to the extremely spontaneous and direct response of the drivetrain.

This kind of technology allows infinite adjustment of valve stroke and valve timing on the intake valves. Throttle losses in the charge cycle are reduced to a minimum and the energy contained in the fuel is put to maximum use. In conjunction with High Precision Injection likewise optimised to an even higher standard, this offers an unparalleled balance of driving performance and fuel economy never seen before in this class.

The BMW 135i Coupe and the BMW 135i Convertible come as standard with a wide range of BMW EfficientDynamics technologies combined with one another in an appropriate symbiosis for each specific market, including features such as Brake Energy Regeneration, a gearshift point indicator on models with a manual gearbox, a map-controlled oil pump, final drive with optimised warm-up running qualities, as well as on-demand control of the engine”s ancillary units such as the pressure-controlled fuel pump.

Enhanced dynamics, greater efficiency: new six-speed manual gearbox and optional seven-speed Double-Clutch Gearbox.

Both the BMW 135i Coupe and the BMW 135i Convertible come as standard with a newly developed six-speed manual gearbox. Optimised for maximum efficiency, this high-tech gearbox features dry sump lubrication significantly reducing drag forces and completely avoiding splash losses in the interest of even greater efficiency all round.

The seven-speed double-clutch gearbox with Sport Automatic featured for the first time in the BMW 1 Series makes an even greater contribution to the optimisation of driving characteristics in the spirit of BMW EfficientDynamics. The double-clutch gearbox improves both acceleration and the efficiency of these compact top-flight performers, at the same time combining this dual progress with the comfort features of a BMW automatic transmission. The seven-speed double-clutch gearbox shifts gears without the slightest interruption of power and torque and offers the driver the choice of either automatic transmission or a manual gearshift.

The fast and smooth shift of gears allows unusually harmonious acceleration and helps to reduce both fuel consumption and emissions. The close, sporting increments of the seven gears ensure that the optimum transmission ratio is always available in all situations.

A combination of dry sump and injection lubrication serves to further optimise the efficiency of the engine through a supreme level of oil supply.

Last but not least, the double-clutch gearbox is controlled with utmost convenience either through the newly designed gear selector lever or by gearshift paddles on the steering wheel.

BMW 135i Coupe and BMW 135i Convertible: outstanding performers in the compact segment and beyond.

The new six-cylinder with BMW TwinPower Turbo Technology and the seven-speed double-clutch gearbox bring out the unique character of these top performers in the compact segment even more and in greater style than ever before. Through their performance alone, the BMW 135i Coupe and the BMW 135i Convertible achieve the supreme standard of a very powerful sports car. And at the same time the driving experience conveyed by both models boasts the agility typical of a BMW 1 Series.

Superior drivetrain technology and a concept unique in this class with rear-wheel drive, the passenger cell moved far to the back, and almost ideal distribution of axle load, offer the optimum combination for unique driving pleasure.

Both models come as standard with a modified M Aerodynamics Package and M Sports Suspension. Other standard features include DSC Dynamic Stability Control with an individualised set-up, an electronically masterminded locking function on the differential, as well as model-specific control maps for Servotronic power steering and the gas pedal, again underlining the sporting character of both models.

The first time Hartge got its hands on the BMW 1-Series, it didn’t bother giving it any performance upgrade. Well, now Hartge is back with the 135 Coupe and it’s a whole different story this time around.

With the help of some ECU calibration Hartge extracted an additional 44 horses from the 3.0L inline 6-clyinder twin-turbo charged engine for a total of 350-hp with a maximum torque of 354 lb-ft. That allows for the 0 to 62 mph time to come half a second faster than the 5.3 of the standard 135i with a top speed of 174 mph. Hartge says that the 135i still maintains its 26 mpg fuel-economy.

Visually, Hartge added a new front lip spoiler, roof spoiler, lip spoiler for the boot, a new rear diffused and side sills. The Hartge BMW 135i rides on a set of CLASSIC 2 20-inch aluminum wheels fitted with Pirelli PZero Nero tires.

Oh you’ll also make a lot of noise when you speed by thanks to a set of new dual round pipes of stainless steel rear silencers fitted into the right and left diffuser.

Press Release:

The 135i Coupé from HARTGE: concentrated power

HARTGE has given the world”s first inline six-cylinder engine with twin turbo-chargers and a second generation direct-injection system a power boast of 44 hp ““ and that at the same time as maintaining its extremely good fuel consumption of only 9.2 litres per 100 kilometres (EU combined). HARTGE not only offers an additional ECU, which transforms the 3-litre engine of the compact BMW 135i Coupé into a powerhouse generating a massive 257 kW (350 hp) at 5660 rpm and 480 Nm (lb-ft 354) at 2950 rpm, and naturally also the chance to enjoy unlimited driving pleasure at speeds of up to 280 km/h. For the dash from 0 to 100 km/h (0 – 62 mph), the 135i Coupé from HARTGE is half a second faster than its standard brother while the 25 mm lower sports suspension guarantees safety thanks to even greater directional stability and outstanding handling on twisting roads.

Beguiling looks and sound, improved aerodynamics

The interaction of the visually appealing aerodynamic parts ““ front spoiler lip, roof spoiler, lip for boot lid, rear diffuser and side sills ““ brings about a significant improvement in negative lift at high speeds. Simply chic: The set of CLASSIC 2 aluminium wheels in the dimension 9 x 20″ offset 40 fitted with Pirelli PZero Nero tyres (245 / 30 ZR 20 front and rear). The 135i Coupé from HARTGE is a car that should not only be seen and driven but also heard. And this is possible thanks to a sonorous exhaust note, which emerges from the dual round tail pipes of the stainless steel rear silencer embedded in the left and right of the diffuser.
Other HARTGE accessories help make the car more individual. They include: A decal set in metallic anthracite, a set of carbon (silver or black) casings for exterior mirrors, emblems for the bonnet and boot lid and a HARTGE insignia (140 x 32 mm).

Sports interior

For all models, HARTGE offers an attractive 3-spoke leather steering wheel with silver (or black) carbon inserts. This material is also used for the HARTGE steering wheel cover for vehicles with BMW 3-spoke sports airbag steering wheel with (and without) multi function and for interior trim for the dash board, gear lever panelling and door handles. HARTGE offers an illuminated gear knob, including an alcantara gaiter for the 6-speed manual gear box and the handbrake handle in a tasteful combination of leather and aluminium. Fully in aluminium, however, is the three-piece set of pedals, ideal for skilful heeling and toeing, while silver metallic dial, red needle and a speedometer reading up to 300 km/h underscore the sporting impression created by this exciting Coupé that, fully equipped by HARTGE, costs exactly € 48,162.14, excluding VAT. It goes without saying that all HARTGE components can also be retrofitted individually.

Press Release:

CR tests BMW coupe against Subaru Impreza WRX STi, Volkswagen R32, Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution and others for October issue

YONKERS, N.Y., Sept. 2, 2008 – The BMW 135i achieved an “Excellent” overall score and outpaced all its competitors to become Consumer Reports’ top-rated sporty car in testing for the October issue. The 135i drew praise for its splendid handling, a punchy engine delivering a 0-to-60 mph acceleration time of 5.2 seconds, and its overall fun-to-drive quality.

Other highly-rated cars in this month’s test group of eight sports and sporty cars were the Subaru Impreza WRX STi, Volkswagen R32, and Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution, in that ranking order. All three of those vehicles achieved overall scores that were also in the “Excellent” range, but lower than the 135i. The four top-rated vehicles ranged in price from $33,630 for the R32 to $38,078 for the “Evo.”

The October test group also included four other cars, which are priced about $10,000 less and delivered impressive performance for the price. They included the Subaru Impreza WRX, Chevrolet Cobalt SS, Nissan Sentra SE-R, and Dodge Caliber SRT4. Prices for those models ranged from $23,310 for the SE-R to $25,169 for the WRX.

The issue also includes an “Auto Test Extra” report on the Volvo C30 hatchback, which is less sporty than the other eight models tested but is stylish and capable. It earned a “Very Good” overall score.

“The new 135i is quick, well balanced and a lot of fun to drive,” said David Champion, senior director of automotive testing for Consumer Reports. “The engine is smooth and powerful and returns relatively good fuel economy. Steering and brakes are excellent, and the cabin is well finished and quiet, with comfortable front seats.”

Full tests and ratings of the sporty cars group and the C30 appear in the redesigned October issue of Consumer Reports, which goes on sale September 2. The reports are also available to subscribers of www.ConsumerReports.org.

The only vehicle that Consumer Reports is Recommending from this month’s testing are the Subaru Impreza WRX and the more aggressive WRX STi, based on previous Subaru models’ reliability. The other tested vehicles are still too new for Consumer Reports to have reliability data on them. CR only recommends vehicles that have performed well in its tests, have at least average predicted reliability based on CR’s annual survey of its more than seven million print and web subscribers, and performed at least adequately if crash-tested or included in a government rollover test.

BMW began selling the 135i in the U.S. this year, but the 1 Series has been sold elsewhere since 2004. In addition to having the quickest 0-to-60-mph acceleration time in this group, it also had the shortest braking distances on dry and wet surfaces, and the highest speed through CR’s avoidance maneuver, which measures at-the-limit handling. The 135i ($37,650 Manufacturer’s Suggested Retail Price as tested) is powered by a 300-hp, 3.0-liter, twin-turbocharged six-cylinder engine that delivers uninterrupted punch and pulls powerfully from idle to redline. Expect 23 mpg overall on premium fuel. The six-speed manual transmission shifts accurately and smoothly but is a bit notchy. The brakes are excellent.

Redesigned for 2008, the WRX STi delivers impressive acceleration, braking, and handling. Still, the STi doesn’t live up to the standards set by the previous generation car. It isn’t as exciting to drive, the steering isn’t as sharp, and the shifter and clutch require lots of effort to use. The STi ($37,640 MSRP as tested) is equipped with a 305-hp, turbocharged 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine that delivers quick acceleration when pressed except in very low revs. The STi returned 21 mpg overall on premium fuel in CR’s own fuel economy tests. Braking is excellent.

The limited-production Volkswagen R32 ($33,630 MSRP as tested) is a more powerful, luxurious, and pricier all-wheel-drive version of VW’s impressive GTI. It provides superior handling balance, accelerates briskly, sounds muscular and brakes well. It pampers occupants with comfortable seats, a high-quality cabin, and decent ride-comfort and noise levels for this class. The R32 is powered by a 250-hp, 3.2-liter V6 that is both responsive and strong. The six-speed, automated manual transmission shifts smoothly and quickly. CR averaged 22 mpg overall in its tests on premium fuel. Braking was very good.

The Lancer Evolution, or Evo, is an uncompromising high-performance sports car. With quick acceleration and impressive handling, it is a lot of fun in the right conditions. But its frenetic highway behavior, stiff ride, raucous cabin, spartan interior, and confining seats mean that this car is not for the average driver. The Evo ($38,078 MSRP as tested) is powered by a 291-hp, 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine that is a strong performer. Its five-speed manual transmission performs well, but its short gearing adversely affects noise and fuel consumption on the highway. CR recorded 21 mpg overall on premium fuel. Brakes are excellent.

The WRX is roomier, quieter, and more comfortable and refined than its predecessor. But it’s lost some sportiness that made the original so much fun to drive. It still remains a practical, affordable, sedan that’s quick and fairly agile. The WRX ($25,169 MSRP as tested) is propelled by a 224-hp, 2.5-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine that provides effortless power while averaging a respectable 24 mpg on premium fuel. The five-speed manual transmission shifts well. Braking is excellent.

Swapping out a supercharger for a turbocharger and implementing other tweaks make the revised 2008 Chevrolet Cobalt SS a better car and a more credible sports coupe. It accelerates quickly and has capable handling, excellent brakes, and a tolerable ride. The engine and exhaust note sound invigorating. But its score was hurt by unimpressive interior fit and finish, wind noise, and rear-seat access. The Cobalt SS ($24,535 MSRP as tested) is powered by a 260-hp, 2.0-liter turbocharged, four-cylinder engine that delivers excellent acceleration and 22 mpg overall on premium gas. The short-throw five-speed manual transmission shifts crisply.

Years ago, the Sentra SE-R was a fun-to-drive little pocket rocket, but no more. CR tested the sportiest, most powerful current version, called the Spec V. Yet when it comes to sporty driving, it’s unimpressive. It has decent power and a fairly roomy interior. But there is little that is special about its handling. The Sentra SE-R Spec V ($23,310 MSRP as tested) is equipped with a 200-hp, 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine that delivers lively acceleration and averaged 30 mpg on premium. Its six-speed manual transmission is a bit clunky. Braking is very good. The SE-R was the only car in this group without electronic stability control, a valuable safety feature.

An attempt to make the mediocre Caliber into a sports car, the SRT4 succeeds only in creating a faster version of a car that was crude to begin with. The SRT4 is relatively quick, and the engine sounds good, but it fails to deliver where it matters most: the fun-to-drive factor. Clumsy handling, a balky shifter, a heavy clutch, a very stiff ride, and constant loud noise compromise the driving experience. The SRT4 ($24,930 MSRP as tested) is powered by a 285-hp, 2.4-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine that delivers strong acceleration but feels coarse. The six-speed manual transmission has long throws and heavy shifter effort. Brakes are very good.

With more than 7 million print and online subscribers, Consumer Reports is one of the most trusted sources for information and advice on consumer products and services. It conducts the most comprehensive auto-test program of any U.S. publication or Web site; the magazine’s auto experts have decades of experience in driving, testing, and reporting on cars.
As demand for V12, V10 and V8 engines dies down, BMW will be shifting towards smaller and more fuel-efficient engines. According to Manfred Schoch, chairman of BMW’s works council, BMW hasn’t produced its 8-cylinder engine in a three-shift operation in a long time.

Schoch said that 6-cylinder assembly will be phased out in its Munich plant and will be replaced by 4-cylinder engines. By 2011, BMW hopes to produce 320,000 4-cylinder units a year in the programs first phase. In the second phase, BMW will add additional capacity for 240,000 engines a year.

Schoch also said that the works council is planning a development of a pure electric car based on the 1-Series which could be named City Electric Sprinter and could debut as early as 2010.
