At the 2010 Paris Motor Show, we were expecting Audi to unveil the Audi S1, however, all we saw was the 185-hp A1 1.4 TFSI. According to Audi, even though the Audi A1 1.4 TFSI produced an outstanding output for its size, it wasn’t badged the S1 since it didn’t carry the ‘S’ badges signature quattro all-wheel-drive system.

Latest reports from Germany suggest that Audi is now working on a quattro A1 that will be badged RS1.

Power for the Audi RS1 will come from a 2.0L TFSI, the same engine in the Golf GTI. Output will be increased to 217-hp.

The Audi RS1 is reported to make its market debut in early 2012.

Prior to the 2010 Paris Motor Show, we were led to believe that Audi would unveil the much-anticipated S1, the high-performance version of the Audi A1. However, in Paris, all we saw was an Audi A1 with a 1.4 TFSI unit that produces 185-hp. While the 1.4 TFSI powered Audi A1 is the range-topping variant of the hatchback’s range, it did not get the S1 badging. Why? Well because all ‘S’ badged vehicles get Audi’s quattro system and the 1.4 TFSI didn’t make the cut.

According to AutoCar, Volkswagen is engineering its PQ25 platform for all-wheel-drive. This will allow the proper underpinning for the S1 and may also bring life to two other models including a Polo R and a CrossPolo.

Sources say that the decision to ditch the S1 badging for the 1.4 TFSI A1 came last minute due to concerns about the lack of four-wheel-drive on the model – a feature that is available on all S models.

Earlier this morning Audi dropped the first details and images of the new 2011 Audi A1 1.4 TFSI, which will debut at the 2010 Paris Motor Show. Power comes from a 1.4L direct-injected Twincharger 4-cylinder making 185-hp, making it the most powerful A1 in the lineup. So why isn’t it called the Audi S1?

According to officials at Ingolstadt, the last-minute move was made since the compact hatchback lacks all-wheel-drive – a feature that is a part of all Audi”s dedicated S models since the rally-bred Quattro S1.

Mated to a 7-speed S-tronic, the Audi A1 1.4 TFSI goes from 0 to 62 mph in 6.9 seconds with a top speed of 141 mph.

2011 Audi A1

As the Audi A1 slowly goes on sale across Europe, the German automaker continues work on the high-performance S1, which is expected to debut at the 2011 Geneva Motor Show. The model will go head-to-head with the likes of the Mini Cooper S.

Power will come from a tuned version of Volkswagen’s 1.4L supercharged and turbocharged gasoline engine that will produce close to 200-hp. The engine should propel the Audi S1 from 0 to 62 mph in less than 7 seconds with a top speed of more than 140 mph.

Audi will only offer one transmission choice – the 7-speed DSG with steering wheel mounted paddle shifters. In a first for the Audi S range will be a hatch available in front-wheel-drive only.

2011 Audi A1

Audi will indeed do a hot-hatch version of the new A1. Company boss Rupert Stadler has admitted that an Audi S1 is on the way and will compete with the likes of the Mini Cooper S.

“Sportiness is a core value for the Audi brand and we have some clear ideas [for the A1] in this direction,” Stadler said. However, he refused to expand on the exact form the range-topping A1 might take.

It is reported that power for the Audi S1 will come from a 1.4 twin-turbocharged engine making 180-hp, which will be mated to the company’s 7-speed DSG gearbox. Audi engineers have also admitted that the brand’s 2.0L TFSI units can also fit in the A1′s engine compartment.

Audi A1 at Worthersee Tour 2010

Earlier this month it was reported that Volkswagen”s new R GmbH department is working on an R version of the new Polo. However, latest reports say that plans for the Volkswagen Polo R have been shelved to protect the upcoming Audi S1.

Speaking at the launch of the new Polo GTI, Volkswagen’s technical chief, Dr. Ernst Linder, said that the company has ruled out doing another performance version of the baby V-dub.

“I would say there have been some ideas about [Polo R], but more in the press than the company itself because we have our GTI and within our company Audi has an S1,” Linder said. “The S1 topped our GTI and to put a car above both, we think we’ll not have the volume to make it interesting. It would be too small amount of cars we can sell like this.”

The new Audi S1 is expected to be powered by the same 1.4L turbocharged and supercharged engine used in the Polo GTI.

Linder also confirmed that a Jetta R is in the works. The Volkswagen Jetta R is rumored to use the same 2.0L turbo and all-wheel-drive system from the Golf R.

Sadly, we won’t be seeing any of these on the stateside – at least for now.

The 2011 Audi A1, which will make its public debut at the 2010 Geneva Motor Show, is one of the most anticipated cars in Europe for 2010. Someone walking down the streets of Barcelona recently spotted an Audi A1 with an S-Line Sport Package hanging out on the streets – giving us another reason to be pretty pissed off that it won’t be coming to the stateside.

Europeans will also get to enjoy a five-door, convertible and an S1 version of the A1 by next year.

According to Audi boss Rupert Stadler, Audi will milk the A1 for all its worth. The new compact Audi is designed to be turned into four individual models in a move the Stadler predicts will add at least 100,000 additional sales to its books annually.

The first model is the three-door hatchback we saw last night that is scheduled to go on sale in Europe later this year with prices starting around 16,000 euros ($22,062 USD).

Sources say that the three-door hatch will be followed by a five-door version that will share the same styling and dimensions but will be priced a little higher. Also under development is an Audi S1 due out in 2012. Power will come from a 1.4L turbocharged 4-cylinder engine putting out 180-hp. During the same year, Audi will also unveil an A1 cabriolet with a fabric hood and 2+2 seating.

Many are looking forward to the launch of the Audi A1 scheduled for March at the 2010 Geneva Motor Show. However, many are excited to see what the S version of the A1 will offer. According to a report by AutoCar, Audi is working on an S1 hatchback, which will take on the likes of Mini Cooper S and Alfa Romeo’s MiTo Colverleaf when it goes on sale in 2011.

The S1 will be based on the upcoming Volkswagen Polo GTI and will be powered by V-dub’s turbocharged 1.4L, direct-injection 4-cylinder engine making 180-hp and a peak torque of 184 lb-ft. However, the Audi S3 will do high-performance without all-wheel-drive, making it the first S badged model not to use the company’s quattro system.

Insiders say that the Audi S1 should make its debut at next year’s Paris Motor Show. Sales in Europe will start in early 2011.

After bringing the Audi A1 to the market later this year, Audi will offer a high-performance S1 version of the hatchback that will compete with the likes of the MINI John Cooper Works and the upcoming Alfa Romeo MiTo GTA.

Power will come from a 1.4L TFSI supercharged and turbocharged engine making a total of 200-hp. It will also carry a quattro all-wheel-drove chassis. 0 to 60 mph is expected to come in at 6 seconds with a top speed electronically limited to 155 mph.

The Audi S1 will also receive some cosmetic changes to set it apart from the A1 including flared arches, 19-inch alloy wheels, roof-mounted spoiler, an aggressive front end with a low front splitter, deep air intakes and daytime LED running lights.

Look out for the Audi S1 in early 2010.
