The accident you see in the picture took place this past week in Costa Mesa, California. It involved 3 expensive cars including an Audi R8, BMW 6 Series, and a Range Rover. From the picture, which doesn’t show the Range Rover, it seems that the Audi R8 was rear-ended by the BMW 6-Series, causing it to smash into the Rover.

Wanting more from Audi and its high-performance engineers, 23-year old industrial design student Marouane Bembli has come with his own Audi R10 concept.

“I’ve designed what I believe will be Audi’s new supercar, the R10,” Bembli said. “It features a mid-mounted V10 engine and a dry weight of 1200kg. I hope you like it!”

Remember Garage419 with Matt Farah? Well, after the finale form the last season, the show closed its doors. Nonetheless, our friend Matt Farah didn’t give up and is now back with a new show called The Smoking Tire.

In the latest episode of The Smoking Tire, Farah gets behind the Audi R8 Raptor, created by Performance Outfitters Group in Connecticut. Almost a month ago from today, we heard a little rumor that Audi will be showing a new concept known as Audi R8 ePerformance, an electric-version of its popular supercar, at the 2009 Frankfurt Motor Show. We’re expecting that the concept, if shown, hints at a future production model that would compete with Mercedes-Benz’s SLS AMG with electric-drive.

With the Frankfurt Motor Show just days away, Audi has released a new viral campaign called “Electricity Untamed.” Each “weird” video ends with a little teaser of what looks to be an Audi R8.

We’d love to say that an electric Audi R8 is no longer a rumor – but we’ll have to proceed with caution.

About two weeks ago, Mercedes-Benz confirmed that it is working on a Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG with electric-drive, scheduled to debut in 2015. It is now reported (or rumored) that Audi will be showing a concept at this September’s 2009 Frankfurt Motor Show that will compete with the SLS AMG eDrive.

Known as the Audi R8 ePerformance, the electric version of the popular super car will carry electric motors and large batteries.

There are no official details on the technical specs of the R8 ePerformance so we’ll have to wait for Audi to make something official.

Audi has released the pricing information on the 2010 Audi R8 and the 2010 Audi R8 5.2 V10 FSI quattro. Certified Audi dealerships will be getting the R8 5.2 FSI quattro later this week with prices starting at $146,000 (excluding $1,200 destination charge, taxes, title, options and dealer charges) for the manual model and $155,100 for the R8 5.2 FSI quattro with the R-tronic.

Power comes from a 5.2L V10 producing a total of 525-hp with a maximum torque of 391 lb-ft. 0 to 60 mph comes in just 3.7 seconds with a top speed of 196 mph.

Unchanged from the 2009 model-year pricing, the V8 2010 Audi R8 4.2 FSI will start at $114,200 with a manual and $123,300 with the R-tronic.

HERNDON, Va., Jul 23, 2009 – Audi today announced that the U.S. manufacturer’s suggested retail price for the highly anticipated 2010 Audi R8 5.2 FSI quattro V10 sports car will start at $146,000, with shipments to authorized Audi R8 dealerships across the country beginning this week.

The addition of the R8 V10 adds new levels of power to a sports car already renowned for delivering premium comfort uncommon in its class without performance compromises. The 10-cylinder 525 hp engine is the same power plant found in the R8 LMS GT3 racecar and is capable of delivering breathtaking performance. The Audi R8 5.2 FSI quattro delivers 391 lb-ft of torque and achieves a 0-60 mph time of just 3.7 seconds.

Anticipation has been building for the U.S. introduction of the R8 V10. Today, the first two 2010 Audi R8 5.2 FSI quattro models available in the U.S. were delivered to the two winning bidders from the 2009 Boca Raton Concours d’ Elegance charity auction held in February to benefit the Boys & Girls Clubs of Broward County, Fla. The two winning bids raised a combined $850,000 for the charity, with the top bidder paying a record $500,000 for the new 2010 R8 V10, the highest amount ever paid for a new Audi vehicle in the U.S.

Since its U.S. launch in September 2007, demand has remained strong for the V8-powered R8 4.2 FSI quattro featuring 420 hp and 317 lb-ft of torque. The hand-assembled R8 V10, developed by the Audi high-performance division, quattro GmbH, receives unique exterior features as standard equipment. Chief among these: innovative full-LED headlights, a world’s first. The Audi R8 5.2 FSI quattro also receives new 19-inch Y-design forged aluminum alloy wheels with summer performance tires, sideblades with larger air intakes, front grille with chrome-optic accents, unique rocker panel shaping, dual oval rear exhaust tips, “V10″ front fender badges and instrument cluster labeling, unique front and rear sections along with a larger rear diffuser all finished in high-gloss black.

The R8 is one of four Audi models currently built with the revolutionary ASF® chassis, a technology that Audi has mastered in more than a decade of experience. ASF is customized by model, including its application with the A8 and TT Coupe and Roadster models. The framework of an ASF body consists of extruded aluminum sections and pressure castings. The aluminum chassis and sheet metal are just as strong as steel, but lighter to boost performance and efficiency. This frame carries the sheet aluminum elements, for example the roof panel, which are rigidly connected to it and help to withstand loads on the body. The elements of ASF are varied in shape and cross-section, depending on the tasks they have to perform. Like the bones of a human skeleton, they combine optimal function with low weight. The ASF application on the Audi R8 offers extremely high torsional rigidity, light weight and high strength for optimal performance characteristics.

All R8 models are produced in Neckarsulm, Baden Württemberg, Germany along with the aluminum A8 model. Audi is continuing to shape the future in lightweight design and elsewhere too. Inaugurated in 1994, the Aluminum and Lightweight Design Center in Neckarsulm, Germany employs more than 120 specialists to work on new joining techniques, body structures, materials and construction techniques. They also look into the use of high-strength and ultra-high-strength grades of steel. In the area of fiber composites, Audi also acts as an innovative pioneer and trend-setter by leveraging its significant racetrack experience and success to test advanced compenent concepts under extreme conditions prior to implementation on its road vehicles.

Audi expects to release 2010 pricing and model year changes for the remainder of its lineup within the next few weeks.

Adding another concept design to the list today is the BMW S.X concept by Iulian Bumbu, a graduate of the Transportation Design Course at the Scuola Politecnica di Design (SPD) in Milan.

Many of us have grown very impatient waiting for BMW to come out with a competitor to the Audi R8. When BMW came out with the M1 Hommage Concept, it gave us hope that BMW was finally going to offer an R8 competitor; however, we have yet to hear anything official from BMW.

Automotive artist Idries Noah became just as impatient as us and decided to design his own version of BMW R8 rival.

“So elements like the trademark grille and hockey stick pillar remain. My inspiration for this design however came from nature. More specifically water and the way it flows and ripples. The side detailing was inspired by what’s called in surfing terms “a Barrel or Tube”. It’s where the wave is hollow when it breaks.”

Noah says that the car would be the same size as the R8 and would feature a 5.0L V10 found in the M5 and M6.

Earlier this week, we heard rumors from Auto Motor und Sport that Audi was going to unveil an electric concept version of the R8 supercar at the 2009 Frankfurt Motor Show in September. Well, according to an Audi spokesman, the rumor is “not true” and Tesla’s CEO Elon Musk can now sleep in peace.

The spokesman, who talked with Inside Line, apparently asked to remain anonymous. No we’re no scholars on public relations but since when did a spokesman ask to remain anonymous when talking about something the company is not working on.

Either way, Audi will bring the drop-top version of the R8 to Frankfurt in September. Known as the R8 Spyder, it will feature the gasoline engine lineup from the R8.

According to AutoExpress plans to produce a diesel version of the Audi R8 has been canned. After 12 months of debating and consideration Audi said it can’t justify a business case to throw a diesel engine in the R8 two-seater supercar.

Last year, Audi unveiled two concepts of a diesel R8 including the Audi R8 V12 TDI at the 2008 Detroit Auto Show and the Audi R8 V12 TDI Le Mans at the 2008 Geneva Motor Show. Both concepts were powered by a 6.0L V12 TDI that makes 500-hp and a maximum torque of 738 lb-ft. 0 to 60 mph was said to come in 4.2 seconds with a top speed of 186 mph.

Audi says that the cost involved with re-engineering the gasoline-powered R8 to accommodate the giant twin-turbocharged diesel engine is just too much.

Pretty sad news for us since we thought this was actually going to happen.

Back in November, we showed you the first sketches of PPI Automotive Design’s Audi R8 Razor GTR – a faster and harder version of the original PPI Audi R8 Razor. Well, the car has finally made its official world debut at the Top Marques Monaco 2009, and we have all the details for you right here.

Power comes from the same 4.2L V8 of the R8; however, PPI added a supercharger, a ram-charged sport air filter system and a high performance exhaust system made of stainless steel. All that brings output to a total of 580-hp with a maximum torque of 443 lb-ft. That allows the PPI Audi R8 Razor GTR to go from 0 to 62 mph in just 3.7 seconds with a top speed of 206 mph. PPI also added a KW adjustable coil-over suspension.

The PPI Audi R8 Razor GTR is topped off with Michelin Pilot Sport 2 tires on extra-wide alloy wheels – 19 inches in the front and 20 inches in the back. A wide-body aero kit and a carbon fiber interior trim was also added.

Performance

Following the introduction of the wildly successful PPI R8 RAZOR at last year’s Essen Motor Show, PPI Automotive Design GmbH have used all its knowledge from the past year in competition, closed road races, open road races, and research and development in the wind channel, autobahn and track testing, to create a truly inspired production car. The Audi specialist turned its focus on optimising the power-to-weight ratio of the Audi R8 while simultaneously strengthening the motor, increasing performance, improving handling dynamics, and managing to reduce the weight of the Audi R8.

The essential part of the motor alteration is the incorporation of a specially engineered supercharger. In addition, a ram-charged sport air filter system and a high performance exhaust system made of stainless steel have been designed and added specifically to work in conjunction with the supercharger system. These components are precisely adjusted to each other with the help of a new ignition map for motor electronics.

The result, after this extensive modification, is a car with up to 580hp / 427 kW at 7,400 rpm, a maximum torque of 600 Nm at 6,200 rpm at its disposal, and a weight decrease of 250 kg over its serial counterpart (serial curb weight 1,580 kg). Providing the PPI RAZOR GTR with the ability to achieve speeds from 0 to 100 km/h in only 3.7 seconds with a maximum top speed of 332 km/h. This insures the proper performance to easily meet the demands of its motorsports and enthusiast clientele.

Aerodynamics

In addition to the excellent driving performance, this PPI Supercar also has a striking widebody appearance with elaborate, wind tunnel tested aerodynamics. Special attention was paid to the reduction of the vehicle’s weight, which was achieved by PPI’s extensive use of the extremely light and high-strength formula 1 and aerospace-proven Carbon Fibre. All parts are made of this high-tech material, reducing weight and adding strength in the process.

The PPI RAZOR GTR front bumper replaces the serial bumper and the new design in conjunction with a specially engineered front diffuser, reduces lifting forces at the front axle. Larger air inlets in connection with a new full LED-headlight unit present the two-seater with an even more athletic face. More importantly, these air inlets feed the radiators with additional fresh air and channels through the new front hood to provide optimal cooling to the brake system. PPI sideskirts highlight the sporty profile of the GTR and also diffuses the airflow around the sides of the car for improved aerodynamic stability.

In order to perfectly balance out the down-force behaviour of the front-axle with the rear axle, PPI equips the RAZOR GTR with a special rear wing with an adjustable Gurney-flap. The motor cover, made of the light high-tech polycarbonate material Makrolon®, also has specially designed Carbon Fibre ram-charged air inlets that replace the heavy OEM Engine cover and aid in cooling, ensuring the consistent performance of the RAZOR GTR. Aiding in the engine cooling, are the newly designed side blades, rear fenders and rear bumper allow for additional motor bay and exhaust cooling that, in conjunction with the Carbon Fibre rear diffuser, optimises the airflow over and through the rear portion of this sharp performance car.

Handling
The overall appearance of the car is further enhanced by a new widebody skin to allow the PPI RAZOR GTR the proper structure to accommodate all the performance enhancements and wider wheels. The RAZOR GTR utilizes specially designed lightweight MAG9 Carbon Fiber forged aluminum PPI wheels. At the front, 10Jx19 MAG9 wheels weighing 8.8kgs with 255/35 ZR 19 Michelin Pilot Sport 2 tyres are fitted and an impressive 12.0J x 20 MAG9 wheels weighing 10.0 kgs with 325/25 ZR 20 Michelin Pilot Sport 2 tyres are used at the rear. This wheel and tyre-combination proves to be the optimal balance between comfort and control while maintaining proper road feedback for the driver.

PPI also developed a special high-performance braking system available only for the RAZOR GTR that can be identified by its metallic orange-coloured brake callipers. The optimal deceleration and perfect pedal pressure control is now achieved by enlarged 6-piston callipers in connection with extra-large discs measuring 380 x 36 millimetres at the front and 356 x 32 mm discs at the rear axle providing greater pad surface contact area and heat dissipation.

Nothing has been left untouched, as is evidenced by the new coil over kit developed in conjunction with technology partner KW Automotive GmbH. This system has been specially adjusted to the needs of the PPI RAZOR GTR. And comes equipped with a Hydraulic Lift System, which can increase ground clearance by up to 45 millimetres if needed and therefore enables the driver to enter underground car parks or drive over speed bumps.

Interior “Performance”

PPI completely re-designs the interior and turns the R8-interior into a “members-only” lounge with a motorsports flair. The serial interior is replaced by highest quality Onyx Nubuck-leather with orange-coloured accents and highlights. Additionally, PPI equips the limited edition RAZOR GTR with extensive Carbon Fibre throughout the cockpit; hand-brake lever, door sill protectors, Driver and Radio Console Surround, Door Trims, Center Console inserts, and kneepad trims, the ultra-light folding sport seats are also made of Carbon Fibre and bear the PPI “Sport Identity” style, following with the headliner, the steering wheel, shift knob, door panels and center console. The technical highlight of the interior is the ergonomically re-designed PPI sport steering wheel. Highlighting the exclusivity of this limited series production is PPI RAZOR GTR badging, threshold plates, and an aluminium production plaque framed by Carbon Fibre.

Audi sources have confirmed that the Stuttgart automaker will introduce a convertible version of the R8 supercar in 2011.

Sources told WhatCar? that the Audi R8 Spyder will have a full-length soft-top convertible roof. However, Audi has yet to confirm whether the R8 convertible will use the V8 or the 528-hp V10 engine from the R8’s current lineup.

Pricing is expected to come in significantly more than the hard-top sibling. Audi is expecting to target the Porsche 911 Cabriolet, V8 Vantage Roadster and the replacement for Ferrari’s F430 Spider.

Audi today made its first delivery of the Audi R8 LMS to Audi Sport Italia. The Ingolstadt automaker said that 12 units of the 500-hp GT3 sports car will be delivered to customers in the forthcoming weeks with the first races of the R8 LMS scheduled for April.

Team Manager of Audi Sport Italia, Emilio Radaelli, accepted the R8 LMS from Head of Audi Motorsport Dr. Wolfgang Ullrich.

Six customers plan to race in five European GT3 championships. They will also take part in the 24-hour race at the Nurburgring for which Audi Sport has built an endurance version of the R8 LMS.

Deliveries of the Audi R8 LMS will start in fall 2009 for the 2010 season.

Remember the first unit of the 2010 Audi R8 V10 and the Ferrari California that were being auctioned at the Boca Raton Concours d’ Elegance in Florida? Wonder how much each unit went for?

Host, Howie Mandell helped auction of the first unit of the 2010 Audi R8 5.2 V10 FSI for a total of $500,000. That is well above the car’s sticker price of $180,000 (we’re not sure if that is official price set by Audi for the US-spec model). The Ferrari California, on the other hand, didn’t bring in much selling for total of $350,000, which is $125,000 over its $225,000 sticker price.

Together both cars helped raise more than $1 million for the Boys and Girls Clubs of Broward County.

While the 2010 Audi R8 5.2 V10 FSI isn’t confirmed to come to the stateside, the first unit of the car will be auctioned off at the Boca Raton Concours d’ Elegance. The new V10 powered R8 will be joined by the first unit of the Ferrari California (for the U.S. at least).

Despite the current economic situation, both cars are expected to draw a significant bid. Proceeds from the auction will go to the Boys & Girls Clubs of Broward County. Deal Or No Deal and Howie Do It star Howie Mandell will be on hand to auction off the two cars and we expect him to say “deal or no deal” at the end of the auction.

2010 Audi R8 5.2 V10 FSI: Power comes from a 5.2L V10 producing a total of 528-hp. Mated to a R-tronic transmission the R8 5.2 V10 FSI quattro goes from 0 to 60 mph comes in just 3.9 seconds with a top speed of 196 mph.

Ferrari California: Powered by a 4.3L V8 making 460 horsepower mated to a 7-speed dual clutch transmission. 0-60 comes in just under 4 seconds with a top speed of 193mph.
