As beautiful as Audi’s lineup is inside-out, it’s hard to find a nice variety of design differences between most of its vehicles. For example, the new A6 looks very similar to the A4 and the A7 looks very similar to the A8. Audi has heard the feedback of its customers and is working on a range-wide revamp of its design language as it expands its lineup with a range of new SUVs, sedans and sports cars.

Audi design director Stefan Sielaff says that the company is already into the project and will closely define a set of individual themes for each of the three major segments.

The new project is known as AQR – A which stands for Audi (sedans and hatches), Q for Quattro (SUVs) and R for sports cars.

“We know that some people think our saloons look too alike and are well into a project to change that,” Sielaff told AutoCar, “we will mainly do that with the proportions of those cars”.

We guess we can expect some nice Audi design concepts to debut very soon.

Weight reduction is always a hot topic in the automotive world, and this time, Audi is asking for your attention. Peter Schwarzenbauer, Audi’s global marketing chief, has recently revealed that the brand is making sure that all of its upcoming generations will be lighter than the last.

Providing a clearer picture of what Audi has in mind, Schwarzenbauer uses the Q7 as an example. The current Q7 TDI weighs 5,687 lbs, while the next generation is going to be 4,917 lbs, which totals 770 lbs lost and an overall reduction of 14%.

Audi is taking a look at its own history to find places to improve, such as the 20% aluminum bodies of the A6 and A7 that will now be used as a model for the Q7. With increasingly difficult fuel standards to meet, the automaker is willing to take on a project like this that is somewhat costly to hit its goal.

Audi has always been the underdog when it came to comparing their models to standard setters made by BMW and Mercedes-Benz. But over the last decade or so, the Ingolstadt brand has been making a huge statement for themselves. It’s one that tells the world that they’re not to be taken lightly and that other automakers should beware, Audi is here to play the game.

Initially, not all of Audi’s entrances to the luxury segment have been hits and the Audi Q7 full-size crossover SUV is one of them. This is mainly due to the Q7s limited utility ability from its streamlined shape, despite being a sports utility vehicle. Additionally, some call the Audi’s aesthetics controversial, which is something I beg to differ. Either way, to show that Audi is keeping up with the times of weary fuel economy figures, they introduced a new diesel V6 for the US-spec Q7 and they gave us one to see what we think.

Exterior:

Beginning with these so-called controversial looks, at first glance the Q7 does come off a bit troll-like. But I think it’s rather attractive with its aggressive schnoz and streamlined body. Admittedly, the design takes some getting used to. And if anything, look at it this way: the Q7 does lay to rest any assumptions that SUVs should be a giant big block on wheels.

The Q7 definitely has presence and one that speaks with masculinity and deftness.

With its upright face, high shoulder line and the long and raked roofline, the Q7 does look like a bit of an estate on stilts. That’s not necessarily a bad thing in my book however.

The Q7 definitely has presence and one that speaks with masculinity and deftness. It gives off a sense of solidity and robustness, something everyone has come to expect from the engineering and design from Germany. It’s clean cut unlike the crease-heavy BMW X5 and the Mercedes ML/GL. And for that, I can appreciate it for the way the Q7 strikes me.

Interior:

The inside is equally as stoic and Teutonic as expected. Audi’s reputation for stellar build quality and interior design transcends well into the insides of the Q7. Close the door to any of the openings for the Q7 and it responds with the solidity of the brick house-like impression. Sitting in the driver seat is especially rewarding with the driver oriented dash design.

Buttonage is kept to a minimum since majority of the settings are hidden away in a series of submenus on Audi’s MultiMedia Interface infotainment system, which does require some fiddle time.

Sitting in the driver seat is especially rewarding with the driver oriented dash design.

Speaking of which, our Q7 was equipped with the $6,300 Bang & Olufsen audio system. Mother of God…if you were to put world’s best amphitheater into any car, any Audi combined with the 14-speaker 1000-watt system would be the best example. Audi advertises it as a “virtual concert hall on wheels.” That’s a complete understatement.

The Achilles Heel to the Q7’s interior is its limited interior space, which also makes the Q7 lack a bit behind some of the competition. Because of its streamlined design and low-slung and sloping roofline, interior space is a bit compromised, especially for the third-row where it appeared only pre-teens could sit comfortably. Folding the seats yields more cargo room but much like the Infiniti FX, the roofline still inhibits trunk-hauling capabilities a bit. If interior space is a concern, the Mercedes-Benz GL might be worth the upgrade.

Performance:

Audi has been one of the forerunners for offering diesel-powered models and this Q7 V6 TDI is no different. As companies slowly market their oil-burners, Audi continues to fare well against the competition.

Arguing numbers aside, nothing can overshadow the fact that this diesel puppy rides on a wave of seamless torque.

The 3.0L V6 turbodiesel features a commonrail direct fuel injection system with a variable BorgWarner turbocharger. Because it is also one of the few diesels offered in this country, the Q7 TDI uses the “clean diesel technology,” which could be likened to Mercedes-Benz’s BlueTec system where it features a urea-injected catalytic converter that helps make modern diesels cleaner than ever. The result is a segment average 225-hp but a whopping 405 lb-ft of torque. Mated to an eight-speed ZF automatic, the Q7 V6 TDI accelerates to 60 mph in an adequate 8.5 seconds.

So it definitely isn’t as quick as the BMW X5 xDrive35d, which boasts 265-hp and 425 lb-ft. And it’s at least more powerful than the Mercedes-Benz ML/GL350 CDI, which is rated at 210-hp and 400 lb-ft of torque. Arguing numbers aside, nothing can overshadow the fact that this diesel puppy rides on a wave of seamless torque. The engine never feels strained. And in any case, the Audi Q7 V6 TDI hauls ass on the straights. It might not be eclectic like a money-roasting 4.2L V8 previously available on the Q7, but watching the speedo consistently climb has its own merit.

With Audi entirely phasing out the nose-heavy characteristics that defined the brand’s handling characteristics for years, the boffins at Ingolstadt have figured out ways to make their cars handle with balance and unfathomable amounts of grip. Some of these latest examples can inspire more confidence than any other drivetrain layout, making BMW tremble in their shoes. The Audi Q7 is no different. Despite the iron oil-burning six-cylinder lump at front, the Q7 rewards with a very spirited and composed drive. The credit also goes to the Audi’s adaptive air suspension–an option on our top-of-the-line V6 TDI “Prestige.” With six settings of “Lift, Offroad, Comfort, Auto, Dynamic and Cargo,” the suspension gives the Q7 a more versatile feel. Dial into Dynamic mode and the suspension lowers the ride height, firms up the dampers, tightens and weighs up the steering and increases throttle and brake response. The differences between the various modes are noticeable. In general, the steering is light on feel due to its AWDness, but what other competitor in this segment really isn’t? If anything, the BMW has the upper hand on steering feel. Accuracy and weighting is up with the best in this segment in any mode.

Ride quality is also something that lives up to the premium German expectations. It is firm and can tend to “crash” a bit on the bigger imperfections. But this can be partially explained by our tester coming equipped with 20-inch alloys. Like the other competitors in this segment, highway cruising is nothing but a breeze, thanks to the standards of the Autobahn. But if I were to point out discernable differences between the competitors, the crisp responses of the chassis, suspension and the well-damped road noises make the Audi Q7 in a class between the Mercedes-Benz GL/ML and the BMW X5.

Overall:

Price as tested for our Audi Q7 was around $73,000. This can be explained by the optional and unreal $6,000-ish Bang & Olufsen 14-speaker 1,000-watt sound system, which is enough to put the Q7 in a class of its own. But because the Audi Q7 V6 TDI bases at $51,450, it can be pinned against a range of luxury mid- and full-sized SUVs.

And to be honest, nearly all of the options in this segment are special in their own way. What matters is that they all master the basic recipe for a luxury full-sizer and each and every option caters to a particular taste. Much like some of egmCarTech’s staff, majority of the buyers in this segment would have the BMW X5 for its bias towards performance. Those looking for a more luxurious experience, like myself, would go for the Mercedes-Benz GL350, which has the best ride out of any of its competitors. As for the Range Rover Sport, it should be noted for not offering a diesel option in this country so in a comparison of diesels, it would be ruled out. None of the American or Japanese alternatives offer diesels either, so we’re left with the Germans battling against each other. And no matter which way you go in this particular segment, the Audi Q7 should at least be on your list for consideration.

A couple weeks ago, pictures of an Audi Q7 pickup started popping up around the internet. We purposely chose to ignore those pictures as they seemed like a photoshop. Well, now some new images have been put out to clarify that potentially fabricated photo from late last month.

A version of the Audi Q7 gone pick up, diamond plated bed and all, has been spotted. Unfortunately, there are no details as to who is responsible for the creation. Presently, the two distinct possibilities of either it being an interesting tuner, or a concept Audi is working on, are both equally likely.

Remember the BMW M3 Pickup?

More is to come, but what do you think? Is there any market for an Audi pickup, or any other luxury German brands? Let us know in the poll below.

Audi has been on a roll with releasing new models as of late. And to “bridge the gaps” between its current models, Audi will be introducing more models that may take the form of crossovers.

“There is no doubt…that crossovers are still selling like hotcakes even though the trend seems to be shifting toward more compact models,” said Audi chairman Rupert Stadler.

To account for Audi’s growth, 155,000 Q5s were sold globally last year next to 47,000 Q7s. And with new models such as the Q6, Q1 and Q4 possibly in the works, Audi will definitely step up their sales game if everything gets the green light.

Audi also wants to try and top the sales of the X6 by offering a more aesthetically pleasing competitor. Additionally, the Ingolstadt brand is thinking of introducing a seven seater large crossover. However, in the words of Mr. Stadler: “We looked at this segment long and hard. Right now, I am inclined to ignore it.”

Ready for special-edition Audis? Well, if you live in Russia and the United Arab Emirates and are an Audi fan, you’re in luck. Audi said it will roll out two limited-edition models in the coming months in an effort to strengthen the brand’s exclusivity.

The company will introduce a special-edition two-tone exterior Audi Q7 in Russia next month that will carry a starting price tag of 200,000 euros ($285,000 USD), said sales chief Peter Schwarzenbauer said. Following that, Audi will introduce a special-edition R8 V10 Pure Sport variant in the UAE for 500,000 dirhams ($136,000 USD) in June.

“There’s nothing better than tailoring cars to specific markets,” Schwarzenbauer said. “We see huge potential for business with limited special editions.”

Audi has goals of doubling the share of customized vehicles to 20 percent of global sales by 2015, said Schwarzenbauer.

In 2010, Audi once again sold more vehicles with all-wheel-drive than any other premium manufacturer. Audi ended up producing 437,792 vehicles with its quattro all-wheel-drive system last year. In the year in which Audi celebrated ’30 years of quattro,’ around 38 percent of all cars produced worldwide were equipped with the all-wheel drive technology.

The most popular Audi model with quattro all-wheel-drive in 2010 was the Audi Q5, of which 155,025 units were built. In the months ahead, the brand will further expand its all-wheel drive lineup in the SUV segment with the Audi Q5 hybrid quattro and the upcoming Q3.

However, its not only SUV drivers who want quattro technology From the Audi A3 to the A8, nearly one quarter of the vehicles produced in 2010 had quattro on them.

“quattro is one of the Audi brand’s greatest success stories, and today we are writing what may well be its most exciting chapter,” says Peter Schwarzenbauer, Member of the Board of Management for Marketing and Sales at AUDI AG. “As we move down the road toward electric mobility, we see entirely new possibilities for quattro technology. The electric quattro of the future will be even more agile, safer and – above all – more efficient.”

Today, Audi customers can choose from more than 130 quattro models, taking all different body types, engine options and transmission options into account.

For some reason Audi wasn’t notified of T-Mobile being bought out by AT&T. The automaker announced yesterday that T-Mobile, which is now a part of AT&T, will serve as the U.S. wireless carrier for its Audi Connect systems in the company’s newest Audi luxury vehicle lines.

Starting with the 2012 Audi A7 in April, the Audi Connect Service will include voice-activated Google Earth, Google Local Search, and Sirius Traffic information combined with Google Earth imagery. The service will also allow drivers to get real-time news, weather, and fuel prices from other providers.

But that’s not all folks. The Audi Connect Service is also able to turn the vehicle into a secure mobile Wi-Fi hotspot. Audi Connect services are enabled with a T-Mobile SIM card that is connected to T-Mobile’s network and is inserted into the advanced Audi MMI Navigation Plus system. To facilitate easy activation, T-Mobile SIM cards will be included with the vehicle, which will allow buyers to sign up for a service plan at the time of vehicle purchase or at any time during or after the six-month complimentary trial period.

“The launch of Audi Connect is part of a foundational strategy to help Audi lead with first-to-market, cutting-edge connected services,“ said Johan de Nysschen, President, Audi of America. “We’re looking forward to a productivel relationship with T-Mobile USA as we give motorists and passengers the ability to access the most current information and enhance their enjoyment of their Audi vehicle.”

Following its debut on the 2012 Audi A7, the Audi Connect service will be available on the 2012 Audi A8, and the 2012 Audi Q7. It will also make its way into future models like the Audi Q5 Hybrid.

It was reported earlier this week that when Porsche fully becomes the 10th brand to join Volkswagen AG, it will be responsible for the lead development on sports cars and big luxury sedans for the group. The announcement was made by Volkswagen CEO Martin Winterkorn and disappointed most Audi executives and engineers who wanted to play the lead role for those segments. Well, it’s not all sad news for Audi because the brand is also on its way to steal some responsibilities from Porsche.

The four-ring brand will be responsible for development of the next Porsche Cayenne, Volkswagen Touareg, Audi Q7 and other future SUVs by the group. Currently, Porsche has the responsibility of engineering the three models.

An Audi spokesman confirmed that the brand will be developing large SUV model lines within Volkswagen. Audi will also develop Porsche’s compact SUV, known as the Cajun.

“This decision was made in agreement with all of the brands involved and will create synergies throughout the group to the benefit of both the brand and the customers,” the spokesman said.

Project Kahn has made the “Audi Q7 Project”, a moniker that reflects their influence on the car.

The overhaul of the German SUV starts with a new paint job- Pearl Soft White paint makes any onlooker see that this car has no standard style. A custom, in-house body kit accentuates the Q7″s natural curves, which are highlighted by flared wheel arches and the accompanying vents. These wheel arches will sit over 22-inch Kahn RS-X wheels.

On the inside, all 7 seats get black leather with red stitching, red and cream dials, and a red and white speedometer. Aluminum foot pdeals and a new, wider glass roof complete the package. The entire package put together costs about $91,688- a steep price to pay for sure. For those interested in luxury, though, no price is too high- and Kahn”s project delivers luxury in excess.

Audi already offers a 3.0L TDI V6 on the Q7, which pumps out 221-hp and 406 lb-ft of torque. While that may be slow for the giant behemoth, it helps it average an EPA rated 17/25 mpg (city/highway). Audi has announced that its European Q7 will be getting another 3.0 TDI engine, which produces 204-hp and pumps out 332 lb-ft of torque.

While that allows the Audi Q7 to sprint from 0-62 mph in two days (9.1 seconds to be exact) with a top speed of 127 mph, the 8-speed tiptronic allows the large SUV to average a combined fuel-economy of 7.2 liters per 100 km (32.67 mpg US gallon).

Exciting? In our eyes – not really. In the eyes of someone looking for a fuel-efficient 7-passenger hauler – it’s a gem.

Make the leap for the press release.

Press Release:

Highly efficient ““ the new Audi Q7 3.0 TDI quattro with 150 kW

fuel efficiency of just 7.2 liters of diesel per 100 km

eight-speed tiptronic and quattro drive

Audi has added a new and especially efficient member to its Q7 family. The Q7 3.0 TDI offers 150 kW (204 hp) while consuming an average of just 7.2 liters of diesel per 100 km (32.67 miles per U.S. gallon) ““ better than all direct competitors. At the same time, a 3.0 liter V6 drives this large SUV powerfully and smoothly. An eight-speed tiptronic and quattro permanent all-wheel drive round out the luxurious drivetrain.

The new V6 TDI in the Q7 is a high-tech engine. It weighs far less than 200 kilograms (440.92 lb) and extensive measures minimize internal friction. Innovative thermal management ““ a new feature of many Audi engines ““ is particularly complex in the 3.0 TDI. The crankcase and the cylinder heads have separate cooling water circuits; coolant is not circulated within the block while the engine is warming up.

A common-rail system with lightning-fast piezo injectors provides injection pressure up to 2,000 bar; the turbocharger and the camshafts’ control times have been optimized for maximum efficiency. A start-stop system deactivates the engine as soon as the vehicle comes to a stop, and an energy recovery system ““ standard for the entire model line ““ stores energy during deceleration.

The EU 5 classification for this new entry model in the Q7 family will come as no surprise, just like its high fuel efficiency. On average, it needs 7.2 liters per 100 km (32.67 miles per U.S. gallon). And its CO2 equivalent is just 189 grams per km (304.17 grams per mile) ““ no other large SUV from a European brand boasts such a low value. The efficient TDI delivers 150 kW (204 hp). Its maximum torque becomes available just above the idling point: 450 Nm (331.90 lb-ft) remain constant between 1,250 and 2,750 rpm.

This large SUV accelerates from 0 to 100 km/h (62.14 mph) in 9.1 seconds. In the version with an optional air suspension, it reaches a top speed of 205 km/h (127.38 mph); with steel suspension, 202 km/h (125.52 mph).

The Q7 3.0 TDI with 150 kW (204 hp) offers the same power transmission as all other models in this line. The new and efficient eight-speed tiptronic ““ with its high overall gear ratio ““ delivers torque to the quattro permanent all-wheel drive, which has a sporty rear-end bias. Double wishbones made of aluminum guide all four wheels; the chassis delivers great agility and stability. An off-road mode and a hill-descent assistant aid off-road driving.

With a wheelbase measuring 3.00 meters (9.84 feet) and an overall length of 5.09 meters (16.70 feet), the interior offers plenty of room. Audi offers the Q7 with five, six or seven seats. The luggage compartment offers as much as 2,035 liters of capacity (71.87 cubic ft). This new entry model’s standard equipment package includes two-zone deluxe automatic air conditioning, a high-beam assistant, and an MMI radio multimedia interface.

Options include climate-controlled comfort seats, a panoramic glass sunroof, an electric tailgate, and a load-securing kit with rails for cargo. Sophisticated driver-assistance systems and a system of ultramodern infotainment modules round out the offer.

Despite a generous equipment package, this model line’s new entry model costs just 51,800 euros in Germany. This basic price makes the Q7 more affordable than all of its direct competitors.

According to some digging done by autoblog.it, Audi has no plans to do RS variants of the Q5 and Q7 SUVs. Quoting Stephan Reil, Audi’s head of Technical Development, the site reports that Audi has no desire to compete BMW’s X5 M and X6 M.

Reil said that the RS models will only be produced “when it is technically possible,” and that the RS badge must continue to represent only the “maximum expression of performance and driving dynamics.”

At the 2009 Wörthersee show in Austria, Audi the Q5 Custom Concept, which is powered by a 3.0 TFSI V6 was supercharged to pump out a total of 408-hp with a peak torque of 369 lb-ft. It is mated to a 7-speed S-tronic automatic transmission, which allows it to run from 0-60 mph in 4.4 seconds with a top speed of 155 mph.

Audi Q7 S-Line by JE Design

German SUVs have been growing in popularity among every type of car consumer, from stay at home moms to young urban professionals. The Audi Q7, a prime example of just such an SUV, therefore has a consumer base wide enough to draw the interest of any design firm willing to try their hand at developing a package. JE Design has done so, bolstering both the image and the intensity of the car with a body and performance kit.

A front spoiler, rear spoiler, and flared wheel arches help accentuate the Q7″s already substantial presence, while rear bumper extensions and new tailpipes add some style to observers standing behind the modified vehicle. In addition, headlight masks and new 22-inch wheels give the car a distinctly non-stock look and feel: in fact, with the wheels JE also adds a “steering angle limiter” to dissociate the wheels and the chassis. All this, along with lowering the car, make JE”s Q7 a force to behold on the road, in traffic, or stopped on a road or driveway.

On the road, though, is where JE”s Q7 draws the most attention; the performance upgrades guarantee the attention of all passerby- or, to be more specific, the attention of those you pass by. Upgrade to the 3.0 L TDI engine”s ECU allow for the extraction of just over 50 additional horsepower and 37 more lb-ft of torque, giving the massive automobile a 0-60 mph time of 8.4 seconds and a top speed of 136 mph, both up on the stock Q7 model. JE Design”s efforts on the Q7 have paid off, and consumers of all types- from soccer moms to young attorneys, actuaries, or accountants- should give this package at least a once-over.

Press Release:

Wide-bodied Audi with powerful performance: JE DESIGN upgrades the Audi Q7 S-Line

Performance raised from 233 to 285 hp and 550 Newton metres

Wide body contributes to the SUV’s assertive road presence

22-inch SUV-Select light alloy wheels in graphite silver

All components with TÃV Certificate

With its wide-body construction and increase in performance of more than 20 per cent, JE DESIGN transforms the Q7 into an SUV with enormous road presence and increased overtaking power. The 22-inch-wheels and the double exhausts emphasise this impression even more.

To start with the 3.0-litre standard diesel version produces 233 hp (171 kW). By optimising the engine control unit, JE DESIGN raises this figure to 285 hp (210 kW). As a result the maximum torque from the compression-ignition engine increases from 500 to 550 Newton metres and the top speed from 210 to 219 kph. The 2.3-tonne vehicle reaches the 100-kph mark in a mere 8.4 seconds instead of the 9.1 seconds needed by the standard version.

The new software for the engine control unit is provided by JE DESIGN for only 1499 Euro including VAT. This even includes a one-year warranty on the motor, turbo-charger, gearbox and drivetrain and which, for only 199 Euro, can be extended for a further year, as long as the vehicle is not more than two years old and has driven fewer than 100,000 kilometres. In their own workshop in Leingarten, Germany, the optimising process takes only three to four hours. Alternatively JE DESIGN can have the engine control unit picked up by courier and deliver it again the next day.

The vehicle’s assertive road presence is achieved by the wide body design. Using it, JE DESIGN makes the Ingolstadt vehicle take on an enormous width and gives the SUV an aggressive presence. The transformation covers the front spoiler corners which JE DESIGN offers for the Q7 S-Line in pairs, with and without the wide body kit (690 Euro), the twelve-part flared wheel arch kit including the door trim (2699 Euro), and the rear bumper extension with lozenge-shaped double exhaust outlets on both sides (1798 Euro). The forbidding look facing forward is achieved by the headlight covers (99 Euro). At the rear the spoiler tail unit, which in addition covers the C-pillars (1099 Euro), ensures the required down-force and puts the finishing touch to the uncompromising exterior.

The entire JE DESIGN Wide Body kit is not reserved only for the S-Line models. The engineers at JE DESIGN have developed the wide construction so that it fits on all Q7 models regardless of year of manufacture and the Facelift Model (apart from the W12 TDI).

The electronic lowering (1428 Euro) on the one hand improves the JE DESIGN Q7′s sporty appearance and at the same time heightens the SUV’s passion for bends. At 35 millimetres nearer to ground level, the powerful vehicle definitely provides a livelier ride round bends and obstacles.

Inside the extended wheel arches, the SUV-Select 10×22-inch light alloy wheels in particular attract the eye. The graphite-silver rims with the polished edge strip and Ultra-High Performance 295/30-size tyres are available from JE DESIGN for 5190 Euro. The wheel spacers move the wheels at the front 60 millimetres, and on the rear axle 80 millimetres outwards so that they fit flush with the wider body (409 Euro). The steering angle limiter ensures the wheels cannot touch the chassis (49 Euro).

With the Q7 Wide Body kit, JE DESIGN turns the Audi Q7 S-Line into an SUV with overpowering domination on the road. The combination of 22-inch wheels, the lowering and the increase in performance demonstrates the high standards set by the customizer from Leingarten. As is to be expected, JE DESIGN supplies all components with the appropriate TÃV Certificate to ensure registration in the vehicle’s documents without further ado.

The Audi Q7: new engines and eight-speed transmission for power and efficiency

The Q7 is the large Audi for the sporty individualist ““ the high-performance SUV for sport, leisure, family and business. Now Audi has made it even more powerful and efficient, with a choice of three new V6 engines and an 8-speed tiptronic transmission.

Engines: a new range

Even more power, even higher efficiency: Audi has revised the engine lineup for the Q7. The two gasoline engines, both V6 units but with different power outputs, are new, and so is the second-generation V6 TDI. A mighty V8 diesel completes the range. All the engines for the Q7 combine two technologies: forced induction and direct fuel injection. A high-performance recuperation system that recovers energy during braking is also a standard item with all six- and eight-cylinder engines.

The new 3.0 TFSI gasoline engine embodies Audi’s downsizing strategy: replacing engine displacement with supercharging. Within the 90-degree angle formed by its cylinder blocks there is an engine-driven supercharger that compresses the intake air. Two charge-air intercoolers prevent the air temperature from rising, so that the engine draws in more oxygen for the combustion process. Vigorous thrust and spontaneous throttle response make the 3.0 TFSI engine, with its sonorous note, an ideal source of power for the large high-performance SUV from Audi.

Two versions of the supercharged V6 are available. The basic version develops 200 kW (272 hp) and has a maximum torque of 400 Nm (295.02 lb-ft) over a broad engine-speed range from 2,250 to 4,750 rpm. It accelerates the Q7 in 7.9 seconds from a standing start to 100 km/h (62.14 mph) and gives it a top speed of 222 km/h (137.94 mph), or 225 km/h (139.81 mph) with adaptive air suspension.

The more powerful version of the 3.0 TFSI delivers 245 kW (333 hp) and a torque of 440 Nm (324.53 lb-ft) between 2,900 and 5,300 rpm. 100 km/h (62.14 mph) are reached in 6.9 seconds, with powerful forward progress continuing until 243 km/h (150.99 mph) are reached; with adaptive air suspension the top speed is 245 km/h (152.24 mph). Both versions of the 3.0 TFSI are impressively efficient: in the EU fuel consumption test cycle they are content with 10.7 liters per 100 kilometers (21.98 US mpg). Compared with the previous engines, the 3.6 FSI and the 4.2 FSI, fuel consumption has been reduced by 1.4 and 2.0 l/100 km ““ 12 and 16 percent respectively.

The second-generation 3.0 TDI, a new development, has effectively nothing in common with its predecessor ““ apart from plenty of power! It has a rated output of 176 kW (240 hp) and a constant 550 Nm (405.66 lb-ft) of torque all the way from 1,750 to 2,500 rpm. This V6 diesel accelerates the Q7 from a standstill to a typical main-road speed of 100 km/h (62.1 mph) in 7.9 seconds and reaches its top speed at 215 km/h (133.59 mph) or, with adaptive air suspension, 218 km/h (135.46 mph). Its fuel consumption is impressively low, averaging 7.4 liters per 100 km (31.79 US mpg), which is equivalent to CO2 emissions of 195 grams per kilometer (313.82 g/mile). This is an improvement of 1.7 l/100 km or 19 percent.

The latest 3.0 TDI engine weighs much less than before: 198 kilograms (436.52 lb), a reduction of 20 kg (44.09 lb). A new chain-driven timing gear and a complex cylinder wall machining process have reduced internal friction. The new turbocharger is exceptionally responsive, making itself felt as rapid torque buildup. The common rail injection system has also undergone further development: it has a maximum operating pressure of 2,000 bar and can therefore inject fuel in an extremely precise spray pattern.

The crankcase and cylinder heads of the new 3.0 TDI have separate cooling water circuits connected together by valves. During the warm-up phase and when loads are not high, the coolant is not circulated in the engine block. This saves energy and raises the oil more quickly to its regular operating temperature. The new start-stop system switches off the engine when the Q7 comes to a standstill.

Audi also offers its customers a second version of the V6 TDI: the 3.0 TDI clean diesel. It already meets the exhaust emission limits laid down in the Euro 6 standard, which does not come into force until 2014, and the tough US regulations as well. Sensors in the combustion chambers, a common-rail fuel injection system with a delivery pressure of up to 2,000 bar and a high-performance exhaust gas recirculation system keep untreated exhaust emissions to a minimum. A DeNox catalytic converter in the exhaust system reduces the remaining oxides of nitrogen by means of an additive. The 3.0 TDI clean diesel also develops 176 kW (240 hp) and has an impressive 550 Nm (405.66 lb-ft) of torque between 2,000 and 2,250 rpm. It takes the Q7 from a standstill up to 100 km/h (62.14 mph) in 8.1 seconds and gives it a top speed of 215 km/h (133.59 mph), or 218 km/h (135.46 mph) with adaptive air suspension. Its average fuel consumption is 8.4 liters per 100 km (28.00 US mpg).

The Q7 4.2 TDI has also had its fuel consumption drastically reduced ““ from 9.9 (23.76 US mpg) to 9.2 liters per 100 km (25.57 US mpg) ““ by installing a 2,000-bar fuel injection system and minimizing internal friction. Yet at the same time the V8 diesel, with its unchanged power output of 250 kW (340 hp), delivers more torque than before. It now supplies a vigorous 800 Nm (590.05 lb-ft) between engine speeds of 1,750 and 2,750 rpm. The big TDI engine gives the Q7 performance figures worthy of a sports car. It accelerates from 0 to 100 km/h (62.14 mph) in 6.4 seconds and has a top speed of 242 km/h (150.37 mph).

Power transmission: eight speeds are standard

Audi has given all six- and eight-cylinder Q7 versions a new automatic transmission. The eight-speed tiptronic lowers fuel consumption by about five percent. It is based on the six-speed unit, but with another friction-clutch shift element added. Being able to shift between eight ratios keeps the jumps in engine speed low: the engine always runs close to its ideal operating point. All gear shifts are fast, flexible and take place extremely smoothly without delay.

At 7.25 to 1, the overall spread of ratios in the eight-speed tiptronic is unusually wide. In the lower ratios the Q7 accelerates powerfully; in the higher ratios it rolls along efficiently at low engine speeds.

To cut fuel consumption still further, the torque converter lockup clutch eliminates slip even at low engine speeds. Any engine vibration that could occur as a result is suppressed by the new damper in the torque converter until scarcely any trace can be detected.

Drivers can choose between the D and S programs ““ or make their own gear shifts at the transmission selector lever or the optional steering-wheel paddles. In combination with the 3.0 TDI the new eight-speed tiptronic achieves an exceptionally high level of efficiency. Its oil cooler is heated after a cold start by hot coolant from the engine’s cooling system. An electric oil pump makes operation of the Q7′s start-stop system possible: it maintains oil pressure in the hydraulic circuit when the engine stops, and closes the clutch for restarting.

The eight-speed tiptronic transmission transfers engine power to the quattro permanent all-wheel drive train. This splits the power in a sporty manner, with 40 percent going to the front and 60 percent to the rear wheels, but in certain on- or off-road situations, the mechanical-action center differential can direct up to 65 percent of the power to the front or up to 85 percent to the rear.

The chassis: agile and safe

The Q7 is one of those personalities who are at home wherever they may be. On the road it excels with its precise, sporty handling, and where the hardtop surface ends it demonstrates impressive offroad characteristics. The suspension uses double wishbones made of aluminum, attached to separate subframes. The wheel bearings have been optimized to reduce friction. The servotronic steering varies the degree of power assistance according to the vehicle’s speed.

The optional adaptive air suspension (standard on the Q7 4.2 TDI and Q7 V12 TDI) with electronic shock absorber control varies the ride height to suit the actual situation. On a high-speed road it lowers the body for enhanced stability and lower fuel consumption. Across rough terrain it raises the body if a button is pressed. At the standard MMI terminal the driver can choose between five operating modes: comfort, automatic, dynamic, offroad and lift. The adaptive air suspension is also available as a dynamic S line version.

The Audi Q7 has 18-inch wheels with 235/60 or 255/55 tires, depending on the chosen engine. But other wheels up to 21 inches in diameter can be selected as optional extras. Braking is looked after by large ventilated disks. With the two most powerful engines even larger disks made from lightweight carbon-fiber reinforced ceramic material are available. They are gripped firmly when the need arises by black callipers with “Audi ceramic” lettering. The ESP stabilization program includes an off-road mode as standard that gives priority to traction on a loose surface. And when the driver encounters a steep downhill slope off-road, the hill descent assist is a useful aid.

Design and body: sculpture in motion

The design of the Q7 stands for power and presence; it is the visual expression of this large SUV’s character. Flowing surfaces create a moving sculpture, with the coupé-like roofline, the low window strip and the tautly curved panel surfaces being distinctive visual features. The outlines are sporty, strong and elegant.

The Audi Q7 is 5.09 meters (16.70 ft) long, 1.98 meters (6.50 ft) wide and 1.74 meters (5.71 ft) high. Its wheelbase of 3 meters (9.84 ft) creates a luxurious amount of space inside. The front-end styling is dominated by the large singleframe grille with chromed surround, and the headlamps. As an optional extra Audi can supply a xenon plus version with LED daytime driving lights and LED flashers, and also an adaptive light version with integrated turning and cornering lights as well as the low, full and highway beams.

Standard LEDs in the rear lights create a distinctive lighting pattern. The tailgate, which wraps around the rear roof posts in an S-shaped outline, and also the hood and the front fenders are made of aluminum. Audi supplies the add-on parts in a contrasting color as standard, or, if desired, in the same color as the body. The Audi Q7 always leaves the assembly line with a high-gloss package. Optional extras are the black styling package or the aluminum-look exterior package, which consists of an all-round chrome trim strip on the bumpers, door capping strips and door handles, and gives the Q7 even greater sophistication. The optionally available S line exterior package also adds further visual emphasis to this SUV’s sporty potential.

The interior: abundant space

The Q7 sets standards for flexibility: no fewer than 27 seat configurations are possible. Depending on the wishes of the customer, Audi can supply its large SUV as a five-, six- or seven-seat version. This last version has comfortable single rear seats and a third row of seats at the back for occupants up to 1.60 meters (5.25 ft ) tall. As a standard feature, the seat backs in the second row can be folded down to provide a level cargo floor. This increases load capacity from 775 liters (27.37 cubic ft) to 2,035 liters (71.87 cubic ft) in volume.

Operation of the controls is simple and logical, and the clearly marked instruments are easy to read. For the driver and front passenger there is a choice of three seat versions: standard seats, electrically adjustable sport seats and climatized luxury seats that can be both heated and ventilated. The elegant lines of the interior, with many restrained details, communicate the typical feeling of wellbeing that the Audi driver or passenger enjoys. The ambient lighting provides subtle highlights, and many of the control elements have fine chrome trim. The workmanship is typical of Audi ““ quality with no compromises.

The choice of colors and materials emphasizes the distinguished character of the interior of the Q7. A variety of leather grades, headlinings and inlays are available, and for the individualist there are leather and design packages of various styles. The S line sports package uses cool black throughout the interior, with subtle accents in the trim and upholstery. Among the items it includes are sports suspension and 20-inch wheels.

Equipment and trim: the highest standards of luxury

The Audi Q7 comes with an opulent array of standard equipment features, including two-zone deluxe automatic air conditioning, high-beam assistant, an MMI radio operating system complete with audio system and eight speakers, a double load floor in the cargo area with storage compartment and a dirt tray. Roof rails are also fitted.

A standard item when the optional driver information system is chosen is the on-board computer with efficiency program. This monitors the vehicle’s energy flows and displays the requirements of the most important consumers, with hints on how to reduce consumption.

The list of optional extras includes such luxury features as the convenience key, four-zone automatic air conditioning, a dark glass panoramic roof and a cool box. Items of interest for sport and leisure include an electric tailgate mechanism, baggage retaining rails and a sliding storage box. In the program of accessories are such items as a pivot-head tow hitch ““ the large SUV can tow a trailer weighing up to 3.5 metric tons (7,716 lb).

In the infotainment area Audi also offers a complete modular system. The top-of-the-line version has an integral hard disk drive for navigation, music, and telephone data, a color monitor with 3D graphics, a DVD player, and voice control. It can be expanded into a luxury media center with features such as a Bluetooth telephone, TV tuner, digital radio tuner, plus rear seat entertainment. A special highlight is the Advanced Sound System from Bang & Olufsen with its 14 channels, 1,000 watts of power and 14 speakers. In the cockpit area two acoustic lenses reproduce the treble frequencies; when the system is started, they extend out of the dash panel.

The range of optional equipment is rounded off by advanced driver assistance systems. The adaptive cruise control system regulates speed and following distance by means of targeted accelerating and decelerating. If a risk is detected, the integral Audi braking guard provides a warning. Audi lane assist helps the driver to stay in lane; Audi side assist employs radar to help drivers change lanes more safely. The Audi parking system advanced assists parking by means of a rearview camera.

The Audi Q7 V12 TDI quattro: the most powerful diesel SUV in the world

The Audi Q7 V12 TDI quattro is the most powerful diesel SUV in the world. Its 6-liter twelve-cylinder TDI engine develops 368 kW (500 hp) and delivers 1,000 Nm (737.56 lb-ft) of torque between 1,750 and 3,250 rpm to the six-speed tiptronic transmission. With a time of just 5.5 seconds from zero to 100 km/h (62.14 mph) and a governed top speed of 250 km/h (155.34 mph), the Audi Q7 V12 TDI quattro matches the performance of a powerful sports car, but is content with a fuel consumption of only 11.3 liters per 100 kilometers (20.82 US mpg).

The luxurious standard equipment specification of the Audi Q7 V12 TDI quattro includes 20-inch wheels, Audi ceramic brakes, xenon plus headlights, adaptive air suspension, a Bose sound system, sport seats and many other features. This top version also has a number of striking body details that identify it immediately.

The equipment, data and prices specified in this document refer to the model range offered in Germany. Subject to change without notice; errors and omissions excepted.

Press Release:

Audi sets 2010 MY availability and pricing for its redesigned Q7 models

- Distinctive new LED front and rear lighting complemented by exterior updates
- 2010 Q7 models include 3G MMI 3D navigation screen and SIRIUS traffic
- Interior enhancements include additional ambient lighting, decorative inlays and available ventilated front seats

HERNDON, Va., Aug 25, 2009 – Audi today announced the U.S. manufacturer’s suggested retail prices for its redesigned 2010 Q7 models, scheduled to arrive at U.S. Audi dealers in September 2009.

The modern philosophy of the new Audi Q7 reflects the attention to detail requested by customers, especially with markedly updated exterior and interior features. The 2010 Q7 lineup presents the most innovative execution to date of the Audi signature LED lighting. The redesigned Q7 SUVs offer standard LED taillights with available LED turn signals and daytime running lights.

Exterior enhancements include a new wheel program, updated front and rear bumpers, distinctive new front headlamps and tail lights, single frame grille in gloss black with vertical chrome strips, exterior mirror housings, and a new lower body panel strategy featuring contrast paint for the Q7 3.6 quattro, full body paint with Chrome package on the Q7 TDI quattro clean diesel, and S line treatment on the Q7 4.2 quattro. The equipment packages for the 2010 Q7 3.6 quattro and the 2010 Q7 TDI begin at the Premium level, while the 2010 Q7 4.2 quattro starts with the Prestige level packaging.

The Q7 3.6 quattro comes equipped with the V6 3.6 FSI engine, the Q7 TDI quattro comes with the 3.0 TDI clean diesel engine, while the Q7 4.2 employs the V8 4.2 FSI engine. Now all of the Q7 engine offerings meet stringent California ULEV emissions regulations.

Interior upgrades include optional ventilated front seats, a new decorative inlay on the passenger side of the dashboard, additional ambient lighting on all four doors, an upgraded MMI system, additional interior chrome accents, and a new instrumentation font.

The redesigned 2010 Audi Q7 features technological advancements as available features that enhance both interior and performance luxury. The 3G MMI (Multi Media Interface) provides richly detailed 3D map courtesy of an automotive grade NVIDIATM chip for graphics processing, along with SIRIUS® traffic and joystick control. The system also features voice-based destination input control and voice inputs, such as “I’m hungry,” “I need gas” and “I need coffee” that will point to the closest options.

Audi Q7 is also one of the safest SUVs on the road with a NHTSA 5-star crash safety rating and IIHS “Top Safety Pick” designation. Safety continues to be a top priority for Audi, which offers more models earning “Top Safety Pick” recognition from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety than any other German luxury car brand.*

In Spring 2009, Audi launched its first-ever TDI clean diesel model in the United States in the form of an Audi Q7 TDI. Using the long-standing 20-year expertise of the Audi brand with TDI Power, this vehicle uses an innovative system that provides ULEV (Ultra Low Emissions Vehicle) clean emissions available in all 50 U.S. states. In addition, this vehicle provides over 600 miles per tankful in highway driving and has an EPA fuel economy estimate of 17 mpg for city driving and 25 mpg for highway driving, which equates to 30% better fuel economy than a comparable V6 gasoline engine. Audi has a history of refined TDI clean diesel performance engines with the Le Mans-winning R10 TDI race car that won all three 24 Hours of Le Mans races from 2006-2008 in which it competed. The Audi Q7 TDI qualifies for a $1,150 Alternative Motor Vehicle Credit from the Internal Revenue Service for a limited time due to the fuel efficiency and reduced greenhouse gas emissions of its clean diesel technology.

Audi is also the first car company in the United States to equip 100% of its gasoline engines with FSI direct injection technology beginning with model year 2010. Audi began racing with FSI direct injection technology in 2000 at the 24 Hours of Le Mans and the American Le Mans Series with the R8 FSI prototype racing sports car. Once this technology first became available for U.S. Audi customers in late 2004 with the introduction of the 2005 A6 3.2 FSI quattro, the list of Audi vehicles sold in the U.S. with FSI direct injection technology has continued to grow.
