This is the moment many sports sedan fans waited for: the new 2013 Audi RS5 is out: 450 bhp to four wheels, and 174 (limited) miles per hour thanks to a naturally aspirated 4.2 liter V8. Stability control can be switched off completely, 15 inch carbon ceramic brakes can be fitted as can 20 inch rims.

If your idea of involvement involves a manual transmission, you will be just a tad sad, but if lap times are what you are interested in, then you probably will be happy with the seven speed dual clutch automated manual.

It started (though I am sure I will be corrected) with the Porsche Boxster’s pop-up spoiler, and continues today in the 2013 Audi RS5: at 75 mph, the decklid spoiler extends and retracts at 50 mph. If you find yourself behind a debadged Audi, twin oval exhausts denote the RS5 along with a specific rear diffuser.

Chassis
− 19-inch forged alloy wheels fitted with 265/35 tires; optional 20-inch wheels and 275/30 tires

As beautiful as Audi’s lineup is inside-out, it’s hard to find a nice variety of design differences between most of its vehicles. For example, the new A6 looks very similar to the A4 and the A7 looks very similar to the A8. Audi has heard the feedback of its customers and is working on a range-wide revamp of its design language as it expands its lineup with a range of new SUVs, sedans and sports cars.

Audi design director Stefan Sielaff says that the company is already into the project and will closely define a set of individual themes for each of the three major segments.

The new project is known as AQR – A which stands for Audi (sedans and hatches), Q for Quattro (SUVs) and R for sports cars.

“We know that some people think our saloons look too alike and are well into a project to change that,” Sielaff told AutoCar, “we will mainly do that with the proportions of those cars”.

We guess we can expect some nice Audi design concepts to debut very soon.

In a non traditional move, Audi will drop the manual transmission option from the S4 and S5 in Europe.

Audi’s Barry Hoch indicated this in an email to Fourtitude.com: “They (Europe) lose the manual. We keep the manual! 100% confirmed, although I don’t know what other markets also get to keep it. I don’t want to fear for my life when I leave the office. The manual transmission enthusiasts are… umm… passionate individuals. Save the Manuals!”

This leaves the DSG (dual clutch auto ‘box) as the only Euro option. This change bucks the trend of more manuals for Europe, but it isn’t the first: the TTRS of course only comes with the manual here in the ‘states, relinquishing the hot TT’s sub-four second 0-60 time by half a second.

So there’s been a lot of confusion on what the Audi A5/S5/RS5 lineup will look like in the United States next year. Earlier this year, Audi unveiled the 2012 Audi A5 and S5 for the European market. At the time we heard that the new look for the A5 and S5 are only for the European market. Apparently, we won’t get the new and redesigned A5 and S5 in the United States until 2013.

But what about the Audi RS5 that’s coming to the United States next year? Will it look like the same old Audi RS5 we’ve been seeing for a while now or will it be the new redesigned version that was unveiled at the 2011 Frankfurt Motor Show last month?

Click here for more news on the Audi RS5.

Well, we won’t beat around the bush. Thankfully, the new Audi RS5 will indeed look like the one we saw in Frankfurt when hits our shores next year.

Pricing for the 2012 Audi RS5 US-spec will be announced closer to launch.

Refresher: Power for the Audi RS5 comes from a 4.2 liter V8 making 450-hp at 8,250 rpm with a maximum torque of 317 lb-ft between 4,000 and 6,000 rpm.

Audi has a long history with motorsports and this can be most noted from Audi’s success in the World Rally Championship after they introduced all-wheel drive to the scene or when they pioneered diesel motors in LeMans. So it’s no wonder the Ingolstadt brand has just unveiled one of its latest efforts and it’s a touring car: The Audi A5 DTM.

Designed and built to conform to the new Technical Regulations of the Deutsche Tourenwagen Masters, the A5 DTM will be entering the 2012 season.

To meet the new Technical Regulations, the A5 DTM features a hybrid construction, which means the A5 DTM features a full carbon fiber unibody combined with a steel cage for reinforcement.

Powering the A5 DTM is a 460-hp V8 mated to a six-speed sequential manual with paddle shifters. Underneath, all of the electronics are powered without fuses amongst other state of the art technology.

Press Release:

The Audi RS 5

The RS 5 Coupé is the star athlete of the A5 family. It offers the power and handling of a powerful sports car packaged in the body of an alluringly elegant coupe. The design has now gained several new, sharp accents, with numerous features that characterize the other A5 models also making their way to the RS 5.

The Audi RS 5 Coupé uses a high-revving, normally aspirated V8 displacing 4,163 cc. This engine is closely related to the V10 that powers the R8 high-performance sports car. The 4.2 FSI delivers 331 kW (450 hp) at 8,250 rpm, with the peak torque of 430 Nm (317.15 lb-ft) available between 4,000 and 6,000 rpm. The engine has a specific output of 108.1 hp per liter of displacement. The potent response, the eager revving and the rich, melodious sound mark the V8 as a thoroughbred racing engine.

Hand-built at the plant in Györ, Hungary, the 4.2 FSI launches the Coupé from zero to 100 km/h (62.14 mph) in 4.6 seconds. Audi will increase the electronically governed top speed from 250 to 280 km/h (155.34 to 173.98 mph) upon request. Thanks to the combination of technologies from the Audi modular efficiency platform, which also includes a recuperation system, the high-tech V8 consumes significantly less fuel on average than its direct competitors.

With its high efficiency and its long top gear, the standard seven-speed S tronic also contributes to the good fuel economy. Drivers can let the lightning-fast dual-clutch transmission shift automatically or change gears themselves using the selector lever or with paddles on the steering wheel. The integrated launch control program provides for rocket-like starts by managing the engagement of the clutch at mid-level revs.

High end: quattro with crown-gear differential
Like all RS models, the RS 5 Coupé also applies its power to the road with quattro permanent all-wheel drive. The crown-gear center differential at its heart is compact and lightweight. It can vary the distribution of torque between the front and rear axles lightning-fast and over a wide range, with up to 70 percent flowing to the front or as much as 85 percent to the rear, as necessary. The default 40:60 ratio of the rear-biased configuration ensures sporty handling.

The crown-gear center differential works together with the torque vectoring system, which acts on all four wheels. If the load on the inside wheel is reduced too much while the car is being driven dynamically, that wheel is braked slightly before it can begin to slip. Audi offers the sport differential as a complementary option that actively distributes the power between the rear wheels via two superposition stages.

Precise and stable: the chassis
The chassis of the RS 5 Coupé unites fast and precise turn-in, high cornering speeds and supreme stability. Most of the components of the five-link front suspension and the self-tracking trapezoidal-link rear suspension are made of aluminum. The new speed-dependent power steering is an electromechanical system with a direct steering ratio for highly precise road feel. It supports the driver with slight steering corrections when braking on surfaces with different amounts of grip. Because the power steering draws no energy when driving straight ahead, it helps to enhance efficiency.

The taut setup lowers the body by 20 millimeters (0.79 in) compared with the Audi A5. Newly designed, 19-inch forged aluminum wheels with 265/35-series tires are standard; 20-inch wheels with 275/30-series tires are available as an option for the high-performance coupe.

The brake system of the RS Coupé features large, internally ventilated wave brake discs, with the front discs measuring 365 millimeters (14.37 in) in diameter. The steel friction rings with their wave-like outer contour are perforated and connected to the aluminum brake caps via pins. This direct structure reduces tensions, quickly dissipates the heat and prevents the transmission of temperature peaks. Moreover, the redesigned shape of the friction rings results in three kilograms (6.61 lb) of weight being saved in total, thus improving the balance of unsprung masses.

The calipers are painted high-gloss black; the front calipers have eight pistons each. The RS 5 can be optionally equipped with carbon fiber-ceramic discs up front. The electronic stabilization program (ESP) integrates a sport mode and can be switched off entirely.

Upon request, Audi equips the RS 5 with a particularly dynamic damping technology – the sport suspension plus with DRC dynamic ride control. The diagonally opposed pairs of shock absorbers are linked by hydraulic lines and a central valve. During fast cornering, the system intensifies the stabilization of the front outside wheel. The sport suspension plus features a three-stage, variable damping characteristic.

The Audi drive select driving dynamics system comes standard with the RS 5 Coupé. This system allows the driver to select between three modes – comfort, auto and dynamic – for the characteristics of the steering, the seven-speed S tronic and the accelerator. And if the car is equipped with an Audi MMI navigation system, there is also a fourth mode – individual – which can be configured by the driver. Audi drive select can also modulate the sound of the exhaust system, double-clutching when downshifting in dynamic mode.

Dynamic steering is another module available for Audi drive select beside the sport differential and the damping characteristic in the sport suspension plus. It uses a superposition gear to vary the steering ratio by nearly 100 percent as a function of speed and countersteers slightly at the cornering limit.

Unmistakable: The design
The RS 5 Coupé has an athletic road stance, and its classically elegant two-door lines dazzle with clear-cut accents. The new single-frame grille with beveled upper corners features a high-gloss, anthracite gray honeycomb structure and a matt aluminum-look frame. The standard xenon plus headlights are framed by narrow strips of LED daytime running lights. The air flows through large openings embedded in a distinctive bumper featuring a splitter edge like on a racing car. Sharper edges make the engine hood appear more three-dimensional so that the RS 5 looks even lower and wider when viewed from the front.

The flared aluminum front fenders and the rear side elements with the sharp horizontal upper edges are reminiscent of two classic Audi models from the 1980s – the all-wheel drive pioneer Audi quattro and the Sport quattro. The side sills sport chiseled caps; the trim strips and the side mirror housings have a matt aluminum-look finish.

The tail end is dominated by the two oval exhaust pipes of the dual exhaust system, which are integrated into the redesigned bumper. Audi also offers a sport exhaust system with a more voluminous sound and black exhaust tip bezels. The LED rear lights are also new and feature continuous light strips. The large diffuser extends far upward, and the spoiler in the rear hatch extends automatically at 120 km/h (74.56 mph).

The extensively clad underbody integrates air vents for the seven-speed S tronic and the front brakes. Thanks to its advanced aerodynamics, the RS 5 Coupé generates downforce at high speed to further enhance stability.

The dynamic looks alter the dimensions slightly. The RS 5 Coupé is 23 millimeters (0.91 in) longer and six millimeters (0.24 in) wider than the A5 Coupé, but six millimeters (0.24 in) lower. Eight exterior colors are available, from solid, metallic and pearl effect finishes to a specially pigmented crystal effect paint.

Dynamic elegance: The interior
The vehicle’s dynamically elegant styling also extends to the interior. The standard sport seats with integrated headrests are power adjustable and covered in a combination of black leather and Alcantara. Audi also offers seat upholstery in Fine Nappa leather in a choice of black or lunar silver, both subtly accented with rock gray piping. Other options include bucket seats with folding backrests or comfortable, climate-controlled comfort seats with a ventilation function. The interior is bathed in black, with narrow chrome clasps at the switches and control elements providing delicate accents. Inlays are available in a choice of carbon, brushed or etched aluminum, a high-gloss piano finish or a light-colored stainless steel mesh.

The new leather multifunction sport steering wheel with its thick rim is flattened at the bottom and features a new, even easier control concept. The ignition key and the shift lever knob have also been redesigned. Even the steering column stalks have been updated. The instruments have black gauges and white lettering with special scaling. When the ignition is turned, the red needles of the speedometer and tachometer run quickly up to the limit before returning to zero for a touch of sporty flair. Typical of all RS vehicles, the door openers are two delicate bars.

The driver information system with color display includes an RS menu with a lap timer and an oil thermometer. It displays a special RS welcome screen when the car is started. A piano-finish fascia in the instrument panel frames the instrument cluster. The pedals, the footrest and the buttons of the optional MMI navigation systems shine in an aluminum-look finish. Aluminum inserts adorn the door sill trims, which are accentuated with RS 5 badges.

Audi also offers numerous exclusive features for the interior. A carbon design package is available for the engine compartment, as are a variety of styling packages for the body in black or matt aluminum look. A broad range of high-performance assistance and communication systems round out the optional extras program. Among these are adaptive cruise control, Audi side assist, adaptive light, MMI navigation plus, the Bluetooth online car phone and the Bang & Olufsen sound system

Audi has just announced that they will be offering a new four-cylinder for the A5 family. The new engine is a 1.8L TFSI four-banger that’s good for 170hp and 236 lb-ft of torque and is lighter, smaller, and more efficient than the outgoing version.

Featuring the usual jargon including Audi’s and Volkswagen’s familiar FSI direct-injection system, the new 1.8L engine also uses port-injection for partial-load and throttle situations.

The results for the A5 are 0-60 times of about 7.9 seconds and an average fuel-economy cycle of 41.27 mpg, which means that the 1.8L consumes on average 21% less fuel than the outgoing engine.

Also featured on this new engine is a fully electronic cooling system. This means that the water pump was exchanged for two fast-switching rotating cores, which are consolidated into one unit and driven electronically by a small motor. The new cooling system is designed to make the A5 more efficient by making better use of the heat produced as a byproduct from the engine. So this also means cold starts will be easier than ever.

Audi has announced a very interesting model change in the 2012 DTM. Starting next year, Audi will start banking on the A5 in the popular international touring car racing series. The coupe, known as the ‘R17,’ will replace the 4-door A4 DTM, which Audi has done pretty well with by winning four times since 2004.

The new 2012 Audi A5 provides the basis for the new DTM car. The model will debut at the 2011 Frankfurt Motor Show in September.

“In 2012 new Technical Regulations will come into effect in the DTM,” says Head of Audi Motorsport Dr. Wolfgang Ullrich. “We’ve got exactly the right model for that in the A5. We’re convinced that we’ll be able to continue Audi’s success story with it in the DTM.”

Like all new DTM cars, the new Audi A5 DTM has a high-strength carbon-fiber monocoque that is combined with a steel tube cage. Power comes from a V8 engine making 460-hp, which is adopted from the successful A4 DTM. Power is sent through the wheels through a 6-speed transmission, also from the A4 DTM.

The first prototype of the R17 is currently being built up at Audi Sport in Ingolstadt.

Audi’s A5 and S5 models have become one of the brand’s most respected models. For the 2012 model year, Audi is updating the two with a wider engine lineup, a facelifted exterior, upgraded interior and new interior colors, materials and options.

On the outside, the 2012 Audi A5 and 2012 Audi S5 both features redesigned tail lights and headlights and are available in xenon plus technology with homogenous LED daytime running lights. Audi has also upgraded the interior with new colors and materials.

For the 2012 Audi A5, Audi offers three gasoline engines and four TDI units. The gasoline engine lineup consists of a 170-hp 1.8 TFSI, a 2011 2.0 TFSi and a 272-hp 3.0 TFSI. The diesel lineup offers a 177-hp 2.0 TDI, a 204-hp 3.0 TDI and a 245-hp 3.0 TDI.

The 2012 Audi S5 drops its superb 4.2-liter V8 for a 3.0 TFSI supercharged V6 from the S4 making 333-hp. That allows the 2012 Audi S5 to run from 0 to 62 mph in 4.9 seconds with a top speed of 155 mph.

Keep in mind that these changes are only for the European market. In the United States, Audi will continue to offer the same A5 and S5 as last year.

Press Release:

Beauty, power and efficiency –the new Audi A5

Audi is refreshing the A5 model series. Advanced technologies are being added to the Sportback, Coupé, Cabriolet and S5 models in the areas of the engine, quattro drive and infotainment for even more efficiency, sportiness and intelligence. The updated design visually underscores the technical expertise involved in these versions.

The A5 models are now more distinctive than ever. The rear lights and the headlights have been redesigned and are optionally available in xenon plus technology with homogenous LED daytime running lights. New colors and materials accentuate the interior, and many details of the operating concept have been fine-tuned.

Each of the four TDI diesel and three TFSI gasoline units in the new engine lineup include forced induction and direct fuel injection. The new 1.8 TFSI features a number of groundbreaking innovations. Fuel consumption has been reduced by 11 percent on average. The start-stop system and the recuperation system come standard with all engine-transmission configurations.

Each engine is matched with the ideal drivetrain – six-speed manual, multitronic, seven-speed S tronic, front-wheel drive or quattro drive. When combined with S tronic, the quattro drivetrain uses the crown-gear center differential and torque vectoring; the sport differential is the perfect complement. The chassis has been more finely tuned, with the optional Audi drive select system and dynamic steering making the A5 even more fun to drive. The electromechanical power steering is new to the A5 family.

The new A5 is a highly intelligent car. Its driver assistance systems have undergone intensive further development. The range of infotainment options now includes the Bluetooth online car phone, which delivers a number of special services and connects the A5 to the Internet.

The Audi A5 – A winner is now even more attractive

A successful family is now even more attractive: Audi is refreshing the A5 model series. New solutions for the engines, quattro drive and infotainment are being added to the Sportback, Coupé, Cabriolet and S5 models, making them even more sporty and efficient. The design is now even more dynamic.

Exterior design and body

Ever since their debut, the models of the A5 family – the Sportback, Coupé and Cabriolet – have impressed with their elegance. The flowing silhouettes, the sharp lines and the muscular surfaces make strong statements. The product improvement adds sharp new accents to the design.

The upper corners of the single-frame grille in high-gloss black are beveled. The grille’s lateral bars and the Audi rings appear to be sculpted. The new bumper features pronounced air inlets with massive struts, revamped grilles and flat fog lights. Sharply chiseled edges give the engine hood a three-dimensional look; the entire front end appears even flatter and wider.

The headlights have also been updated. Their lower edge forms a wave; their interior has been restructured. With the optional xenon plus headlights, the LED daytime running lights form a narrow, homogenous clasp framing the headlight. Audi also offers the adaptive light system with dynamic cornering light and turning light. The rear lights have also been redesigned and are optionally available with continuous LED light strips. The bumper includes a number of additional details.

The product improvement has added a millimeter (0.04 in) to each of the exterior dimensions. The A5 Sportback is 4.71 meters (15.45 ft) long; the Coupé and the Cabriolet 4.63 meters (15.19 ft). The range of colors has been reshuffled and now comprises 16 colors. The fully automatic acoustic top of the A5 Cabriolet is available in four colors. The S line exterior package is available for those who appreciate an even more dynamic look.

The vehicle bodies impress with high rigidity, outstanding crash safety, high vibrational comfort and low weight. The front fenders are made of aluminum for improved axial load distribution. Aerodynamic fine-tuning measures include a lined underbody.

Interior design

A harmonious balance of proportions and surfaces, fine materials and top-quality fit and finish: The interior of the A5 models reflects the Audi brand culture. It is now more elegant than ever – with new steering wheels, including an option for a flattened ring, new steering column stalks and with narrow chrome clasps framing the control elements.

A button is used to directly adjust the optional seat heating and seat ventilation in three stages. Also updated were the ignition key, the selector lever for the automatic transmission, the button for the optional Audi drive select system and the controls of the high-efficiency air conditioning and multifunction steering wheel. All displays are now illuminated in white.

New paint covers the bezels on the instrument cluster and the center console, and there is also a new selection of upholstery and inlays. The latter are available in Aluminium Trigon or in walnut or natural fine grain ash. Almost all of the interior colors are new. Fine Nappa leather replaces Valcona in the Sportback, and the armrests can also be covered in leather, if desired. The A5 Sportback is also now optionally available as a five-seater.

Another attractive option is the S line sport package. It drapes the interior in black and accentuates it with elegant applications. A sport suspension lowers the vehicle body by 10 millimeters (0.39 in), and 18-inch wheels round out the package. Buyers looking for that special something will find many more customization options in the Audi exclusive range, including the stylish Audi exclusive line with two-tone seat coverings.

Engines

The A5 family sets new standards for sportiness and efficiency. All engines feature forced induction and direct injection for tremendous pulling power. Even the entry-level engine produces 320 Nm (236.02 lb-ft) of torque. The start-stop system and the recuperation system are standard with all engines – no other manufacturer takes such a rigorous approach. The lineup comprises three gasoline engines and four TDI units. CO2 emissions have been reduced by as much as 22 percent.

The completely redesigned 1.8 TFSI showcases the full extent of Audi’s expertise. Groundbreaking innovations can be found in the control of the valves and their lift, the thermal management concept, the injection system, the turbocharger and the integration of the exhaust manifold. In the A5 Coupé, the high-end four-cylinder unit consumes on average just 5.7 liters of fuel per 100 km (41.27 US mpg). This best-in-class value corresponds to 134 grams CO2 per km (215.65 g/mile) and is 21 percent lower than before. With 125 kW (170 hp), the 1.8 TFSI accelerates the A5 powerfully.

The output of the 2.0 TFSI remains unchanged at 155 kW (211 hp). New to the Audi A5 lineup is the 3.0 TFSI, a supercharged V6 producing 200 kW (272 hp).

The diesel engines are also impressively efficient, and the four-cylinder units feature modifications in numerous areas. Equipped with the 130 kW (177 hp) 2.0 TDI and a manual transmission, the A5 Coupé consumes on average just 4.7 liters of fuel per 100 km (50.05 US mpg) – a CO2 equivalent of 122 g per km (196.34 g/mile) and a milestone in the coupe segment.

Three V6 diesel units round out the lineup on the top end. The 3.0 TDI with 150 kW (204 hp) is the most fuel-efficient six-cylinder unit in its class worldwide. In the A5 Coupé with multitronic, it consumes on average 4.9 liters (48 US mpg) of fuel and emits just 129 grams CO2 per km (207.61 g/mile). The second variant of the 3.0 TDI produces 180 kW (245 hp). Arriving somewhat later is a particularly low-emissions clean diesel model that will make the A5 the first coupe on the market to meet the Euro 6 diesel standard.

Drivetrain

Audi offers the ideal drivetrain for each engine. A manual six-speed transmission and the continuously variable multitronic are available for models with front-wheel drive. The quattro models come with a manual transmission or the lightning-fast, seven-speed S tronic. All of the transmissions shine with their convenience and precision, high efficiency and wide gear spread. The long ratios in the upper gears reduce fuel consumption.

Members of the A5 family equipped with quattro permanent all-wheel drive and the S tronic transmission also feature the crown-gear center differential with torque vectoring. During normal driving, the mechanical component sends the engine’s power primarily to the rear wheels. If necessary, it redistributes the power lightning-fast and smoothly. Up to 70 percent can flow to the front axle, 85 percent to the rear axle. Torque vectoring uses targeted, minor braking interventions to make the handling even more precise.

Available as an option in all A5 quattro models, the sport differential provides for maximum precision and high traction. It uses two superposition stages engaged via multi-plate clutches to actively distribute the torque between the rear wheels as needed.

Chassis

The A5 models set standards for sporty dynamics, luxurious ride comfort and excellent driving safety. Most of the components of the five-link front suspension and the trapezoidal-link rear suspension are made of aluminum. The rear suspension bearings and the damper tuning have been updated for more precise handling and even greater comfort.

The ESP stabilization program with electronic limited slip differential is standard in all front-wheel drive versions of the A5. ESP uses minimal braking interventions at the inside front wheel for even more agility during dynamic driving. The large brakes – with ventilated front and rear discs in many variants – offer excellent stopping power and are very easy to modulate.

17-inch wheels with 225/50 tires are standard. Options include wheels up to 20 inches and 265/30 tires as well as four new wheel designs.

Among the high-end features in the model series is Audi drive select. In the basic configuration, it adjusts the power steering boost, the accelerator characteristic, the shift points of the automatic transmission and the automatic air conditioning. Using a button in the cockpit, the driver can determine whether these components should work in “comfort,” “auto,” “dynamic” or “efficiency” mode. The latter helps to drive the A5 particularly efficiently. If the car is equipped with a navigation system, there is also an “individual” mode that the driver can largely configure him or herself.

Audi drive select can be combined with additional modules, if desired. These are the sport suspension with damper control, the sport differential and dynamic steering, which steplessly varies the steering ratio by nearly 100 percent as a function of speed.

Another new standard feature in the A5 model series is the electromechanical power steering. An electric motor generates the right amount of boost for the speed being driven. The electromechanical power steering features a direct ratio, reacts instantly and provides precise road feedback. It intervenes slightly to support the driver when braking on a surface with less grip on one side of the car.

The system reduces fuel consumption by up to 0.3 liters per 100 km and up to 7 g CO2/km (11.27 g/mile) because it consumes no energy at all while driving straight.

Assistance systems

The assistance systems in the Audi A5 model series use a variety of technologies to make driving even more controlled. Some of them have been improved with new functions. Among the standard features is the new driver information system with recommendations to take a break. It uses steering motions and additional parameters to detect when the driver is getting tired and issues an appropriate warning.

Audi side assist supports the driver when changing lanes by using radar to monitor the space behind the car. Audi active lane assist – a new feature in the A5 – helps the driver to maintain the lane. A camera detects the lane markings and the system makes slight corrections to the electromechanical steering, if necessary. The adaptive cruise control uses radar technology to maintain a constant interval between the A5 and the vehicle ahead. At speeds below 30 km/h (18.64 mph), it initiates maximum braking in the event of an impending collision.

Infotainment systems

The infotainment systems in the A5 have been significantly upgraded. Audi equips all models in the A5 lineup with a CD radio and eight speakers.

The optional top-of-the-line unit is MMI navigation plus with a large hard drive, seven-inch color monitor, 3D graphics and DVD player. Its controls have been improved. The number of hard buttons has been reduced from eight to four and the volume control now features a joystick cap to make it easier to choose songs. Voice control and digital radio reception also received some fine-tuning.

An additional option is the Bluetooth online car phone. Audi connect is the catchword for the attractive services this phone brings to the A5, which include Google POI search, navigation with Google Earth images and a WLAN hotspot. The hotspot enables passengers to surf the Internet and send and receive e-mail with their mobile devices. Audi traffic information online is an additional service that does a much better job than the familiar TMC standard of providing the driver with extremely precise and current information about the traffic load along the selected route. All the driver needs to use these functions is a data-capable SIM card.

Prices

Despite the extensive product improvement, Audi is raising prices only slightly. The price increase for the A5 Coupé 2.0 TFSI is only €200, for example. The base model, the Audi A5 Sportback 1.8 TFSI, costs €33,350.

The Audi S5

The top models in the series – the S5 as Sportback, Coupé and Cabriolet – have also been refreshed. All S5 models, including the Coupé, are now equipped with the 3.0 TFSI producing 245 kW (333 hp). Compared to the 4.2-liter V8 it replaces in the Coupé, the supercharged V6 consumes on average 20 percent less fuel per 100 kilometers. Average fuel consumption is just 8.1 liters (29.04 US mpg) while performance remains impressive. The S5 Coupé accelerates from 0 to 100 km/h (62.14 mph) in just 4.9 seconds on its way to an electronically governed top speed of 250 km/h (155.34 mph).

Visual cues to the updated S models include new lights, modified body details and new crystal-effect paint finishes. Subtle changes can also be found in the interior. The most important technical updates for the Audi S5 are quattro drive with the crown-gear center differential and electromechanical power steering. The special S sport suspension and the standard 18-inch wheels deliver the power to the road.

Audi has been working on a hybrid system that doubles as an all-wheel drive conversion kit. Just recently they demonstrated a prototype after resorting to Peugeot and Citroen (PSA) for some engineering consultation.

They start off with a normal A5. It’s given a 2.0L TFSI four banger good for about 208hp and is given an additional two electric motors with a 9.4 kWh lithium-ion battery, one at each axle, allowing for an all-electric capability. The end result is the A5 e-tron Quattro…sounds like something to come from the Decepticons.

The motor at the front provides roughly 40hp whereas the motor in the rear provides 80. The rear motor is actuated when the car is under heavy acceleration or when the stability and traction control sense a loss of traction. With the new hybrid powertrain, the A5 e-tron Quattro can travel up to 25 miles on electric power and can reach speeds of 62 mph. Fuel economy is rated at 2.7 liters/100 km with a 0-60 time of about 5.9 seconds with flat out top speed of 145 mph.

Unfortunately though, the e-tron is only a prototype and there was extensive use of carbon fiber and aluminum parts to keep the A5 from becoming too heavy from all of the electrical equipment. All the efforts lead to a not so shabby 3,527 lbs, which is roughly the same as a standard 2.0L A5.

But this isn’t the only project as Peugeot just announced a new concept of bringing the 3008 Hybrid4 AWD diesel-electric hybrid later in the year.

Peter Schwarzenbauer, Audi AG board member for sales and marketing, expects the A8, A6 and forthcoming A7 five-door sedan to account for 30 percent of sales in the United States within six or seven years. That’s up from the current 15 percent. On a global basis, those segments represent 25 percent of Audi’s sales.

In the United States, three models are expected to fuel that segment including the A8, which will be followed by the A7 next year and a redesigned A6 sedan in 2011… but Audi’s not stopping there.

According to Automotive News, Audi is also considering its own version of the A5 Sportback sedan and a new “A9 sports car to compete against the Aston Martin Rapide.” Now we’re not sure when/if the A9 will show up but it does sound very exciting.

It was reported yesterday that Audi will also get aggressive in the compact segment.

Inside and outside, the Audi A5 is a good looking car. And while the Cabriolet may be even better looking than the hardtop model, tuning companies always believe they can do better. Senner Tuning has put together a package for the A5, and they”ve taken this German saloon to the extreme: new front bumpers, rear bumpers, 4 tailpipe exhaust, wheels, and adjustable suspension make the car even more eyecatching than it already was.

The inside of the car, too, receives an upgrade: carbon fiber trim complement the new, custom floor mats and steering wheel specialized for sport driving. The car is also better equipped for sport driving, with an optimized ECU and sport filter, giving the A5 increases of 63 hp and 59 lb-ft of power and torque, meaning the car now has 272 hp and 317 lb-ft total.

All in all, it”s an impressive package; the question, though, is does it really improve the A5 all that much? That will be determined by the taste-and the checkbooks- of A5 owners not totally satisfied with their luxury vehicles.

Press Release:

The German tuner Senner Tuning Inc., known for its extravagant modifications, has now placed the golden crown on the Audi A5 Cabriolet. The Audi tuner Senner Tuning Inc. is offering an extensive individualisation program for the current Audi A5/S5 Cabriolet. The Senner Tuning Inc. has fired up the new, blazing A5 2.0 T-FSI Cabriolet even more. The performance of the turbo petrol engines has been increased to 275 HP and 430 Nm with the use of sports air filters and software optimisation. In addition, thanks to the Power Convertor (responsible for the acceleration of the electronic gas signal) the gas intake has an even quicker reaction time.

The tuner from Ingelheim offers an audibly superior exhaust system for the A5, guaranteed to give you goosebumps. It is an in-house sports exhaust system with a stainless steel finishing with four end pipes, 88x74mm in diameter. With this, the Audi gives the driver a real sports car feeling.

The carbon hydride screw thread (Version 2, Inox Line) with adjustable settings ensures perfect road position.

For the wheels, only the best was good enough. On the right are Varianza TIS light metal rims and on the left, Scwhert (“Sword”) SC1 light metal rims in silver chrome with anodised lips 9×20 inches and 10.5×20 inches in size with 245/30 R20 und 295/25 R20er Vredestein tyres ““ they cause quite a sensation. You don”t need to trim the wheel arch edges for that!

In addition to the work on the open heart and wheels, the Ingelheim team has also cosmetically improved the bodywork of the A5. The new spoiler in the RS6 Design as well as the cooler grill are examples of this, which includes exterior mirrors in the RS5 Design and a rear valance with sporty diffusor fins.

Prestige in the interior is taken care of with surfaces made from leather and extensive carbon fibre applications. The carbon set at Senner Tuning Inc. includes a tacho blend, the S-Line sports steering wheel, an ash tray cover as well as a further extension of door applications, not exactly made with cheap material.
The whole thing is completed with the convertible roof module by Senner Tuning Inc., which can be open and closed via radio signals.

The German Design Council said that it will present a 2010 Design Award of the Federal Republic of Germany to the Audi A5 Coupe. What does the Head of Design for the Volkswagen Group, Walter de Silva have to say about that?

“The Audi A5 Coupé is the most beautiful car I”ve ever designed and is well on its way to becoming a design icon. I”m therefore thrilled by this accolade, as it also validates my hard work. The A5 Coupé clearly has an automotive personality all its own. It is an absolute highlight of Audi”s progressive and stylish design language. The A5 is naturally a very powerful and supremely sporty automobile. Yet it isn”t the least bit aggressive or arrogant.”

This prestigious design award will be presented as part of the opening ceremony of the International Ambiente Fair in Frankfurt on February 12, 2010. Audi sold some 112,000 units of the A5 Coupe worldwide between its launch in June 2007 and late September 2009.

Personally, we’re bigger fans of the Audi S5.

The pioneer of lightweight construction and design, Audi, has developed an Audi A5 Coupe prototype that sheds 240 pounds by switching steel for an advanced aluminum and carbon fiber construction. When compared to the production steel-bodied Audi A5, which carries a curb weight of 3,130 lbs, the Audi A5 aluminum prototype weighs in at 2,888 lbs.

Audi says that with the use of aluminum and carbon fiber onto the aluminum Audi Space Frame architecture, the A5 prototype is able to achieve V6 performance with the use of a smaller 4-cylinder engine. Powered by a 2.0L Turbo FSI engine making 211-hp, the A5 prototype achieves a power-to-weight ratio of 161-hp per ton. The production 265-hp A5 3.2 FSI V5 quattro gets 172-hp per ton.

Of course, it also helps fuel-economy… but we could care less about that (as enthusiasts – otherwise we love planet Earth).

Audi said it will continue research on new materials and alloys to keep reducing the weight of its vehicles.

Press Release:

ALUMINIUM A5 COUPE PROTOTYPE SHOWS THE LIGHTER SIDE OF AUDI

Lightweight construction pioneer highlights its technological lead

- Dynamic and efficient: Audi ““ pioneer of lightweight design for enhanced performance and optimised efficiency
- Aluminium-bodied A5 prototype aids development of the ASF concept
- Over 550,000 Audi models with an aluminium body since 1994
- New materials and technologies for the cars of tomorrow

A lightweight Audi A5 Coupe prototype has jettisoned over 100kg by swapping steel for advanced aluminium and carbon fibre construction in the interest of fuel economy, emissions reduction and handling agility. The A5 project is the latest example of the pioneering work undertaken by the Vorsprung durch Technik brand to extend efficiency optimisation measures well beyond the engine bay.

Taking an existing steel-bodied production car as its basis, the A5 project car clearly demonstrates the benefits of the aluminium Audi Space Frame (ASF) concept with which Audi broke new ground 15 years ago, and which test beds of this kind help to evolve and improve. Use of the ASF principle reduces the weight of a car body by at least 40 per cent compared with conventional steel construction, and this shows in a kerb weight of 1,310kg for the aluminium A5 prototype, versus a total of 1,420kg for the equivalent steel-bodied series production model.

Thanks to the significant weight loss, achieved by mounting aluminium and carbon fibre-reinforced plastics onto the aluminium Audi Space Frame (ASF), the A5 prototype is able to use a four-cylinder engine with its attendant economy and emissions advantages to deliver the performance of a higher output V6.

With the acclaimed 2.0-litre, 211PS Turbo FSI engine, the A5 achieves a power-to-weight ratio of 161PS per tonne. For comparison, the ‘standard’ A5 3.2 FSI V6 quattro with 265PS, which tips the scales at 1,540kg, shades it only by a fraction at 172PS per tonne.

The lightweight design of the test car not only enables a smaller engine to supplement a larger one with no impact on performance and gains in economy and emissions, but also has a knock-on effect on ancillaries such as the brakes and transmission, which can also be reduced in size and weight. It also enables the car to change direction noticeably more keenly and nimbly and, thanks to the reduction in unsprung weight, to ride with even more refinement.

15 years of lightweight construction experience
Over the past 15 years, Audi has employed the ASF principle in two generations of A8 luxury saloon, in the hyper-efficient, ahead-of-its-time A2 compact hatchback and in the celebrated R8 super car. ASF has also been re-interpreted in the creation of the latest TT Coupe and Roadster, which feature advanced steel and aluminium ‘hybrid’ construction that allows for outstanding weight distribution.

“One of our most enduring aims for the future is to reverse the weight spiral,” says Michael Dick, Member of the Board of Management of AUDI AG responsible for Technical Development. “Lightweight design is the foundation of our entire approach to improving efficiency.”

Lightweight design is a strategic responsibility at Audi. It makes a significant contribution to dynamic potential and efficiency, helping to conserve resources and reduce operating costs. The electric drives of the future will add additional weight to the car and will initially only offer a limited range, making systematic lightweight design all the more important.

ASF: the reversal of the weight spiral
The reversal of the weight spiral that Audi initiated with the ASF principle which began with the Audi A8 of 1993 has major efficiency advantages. Every 100kg saved reduces fuel consumption by 0.3 to 0.5 litres per 100 kilometres, corresponding to a reduction of 8 to 11 grams of CO2 per kilometre. A lighter body is also the starting point for weight reductions on other parts of the car, such as the chassis or the fuel tank.

Meanwhile lightweight bodies are an absolute prerequisite for the electric drive systems of the future with their heavy batteries. The performance and range expected by customers cannot be achieved without them.

Audi has already built more than 550,000 vehicles with an aluminium body. Added to this are roughly 9,000 Lamborghinis ““ no other manufacturer in the world can even come close in terms of the number of vehicles or their diversity.

The ASF technology is an unparalleled success story. Audi has increased its lead step by step: in alloys, in the reduction of the number of parts and in production efficiency. Numerous innovations in development and production have raised the level of automation from 25 to over 80 percent, which is nearly on par with steel body construction.

In fabrication, traditional spot welding is being replaced by joining methods developed by Audi, including punch riveting, bonding or laser-MIG hybrid welding. In the TT and the R8, self-tapping screws are used to join many of the components. Another innovation is the laser-welded invisible seam on the roof of the TT.

A8, R8, TT and TT Roadster: the state of the art
The second generation of the A8 and the R8, TT Coupé and TT Roadster sports cars document the current state of the ASF technology. The superstructure of the current A8 weighs 218kg while the aluminium body of the R8, whose co-supporting engine frame is made of ultra light magnesium, tips the scales at 210 kg.

The TT Coupé and Roadster bodies weigh 206 kg and 251 kg respectively while the TT “family” also features an additional innovation. To ideally balance the axle loads between the front and back, Audi developed an innovative hybrid construction for its compact sports cars: Most of the body is made of aluminium, but steel is used in the rear.

Depending on the model, the kerb weight of the TT has been reduced by between 20 and 90 kg compared to the previous model which had an all-steel body. At the same time, the static torsional rigidity of the Coupé increased by 50 percent and that of the Roadster by an even more impressive 100 per cent.

The ASF provides the foundation for precise handling and a high level of passive safety. A lighter car has to dissipate less kinetic energy and is also does less damage to others involved in an accident. The lightweight design combines chassis responsiveness and efficiency in typical Audi fashion.

Foundations were laid almost 100 years ago
NSU built the Type 8/24, featuring a body made entirely of aluminium, in 1913, and 10 years later, the Audi Type K wore an experimental streamlined skin of this same material. In the 1930s, specialists from the Racing department of Auto Union manufactured aluminium panels by hand and used them to build the bodies and streamlining panels for their spectacular racing cars and land speed record cars.

Lightweight design advanced to the level of a strategic project at Audi in 1982 to invent a self-supporting body with a material roughly two-thirds lighter than conventional steel and also with a new geometry tailored to this material ““ the Audi Space Frame.

In 1985, Audi presented the body of an Audi 100 made of aluminium but still using a conventional monocoque design. The legendary concept sports cars of 1991, the Audi Avus quattro and the Audi quattro Spyder, had skins of the light metal but underneath were still supporting frames.

The new technology was ready for series production in 1993. A shining silver showcar with an unpainted body of polished aluminium was on display at the Frankfurt Motor Show. The predecessor to the A8 bore the designation ASF, the abbreviation for Audi Space Frame. The production model that debuted the following year was a milestone ““ the first large-volume production car with a self-supporting aluminium body.

The A8 paved the way for Audi into the premium league and it also sparked new developments for the traditional material of steel. The principle embodied by the first A8 still applies today: Die castings and extruded sections form a framework-like skeleton that incorporates aluminium panels as co-supporting elements. The components with their various cross-sections and shapes combine optimal function with low weight.

The Aluminium and Lightweight Design Centre
Audi established a special Aluminium Centre in Neckarsulm for development, production planning and quality assurance in 1994. The Aluminium and Lightweight Design Centre experiments with high-strength steels, tailored blanks, fibre-reinforced plastics and magnesium.

Heinrich Timm, the Head of the Aluminium and Lightweight Design Centre, says: “Aluminium remains the primary material, but we are intensively investigating the other materials, with our primary focus on fibre-reinforced composites.”

The lessons learned at the Aluminium and Lightweight Design Centre innovation foundry, which employs 150, have already served as the basis for a three-digit number of patents in development and production ““ a balance they can be proud of. The European Patent Office named Audi “European Inventor of the Year 2008″ for its achievements with the ASF technology.

Lightweight design in the rest of the vehicle
Audi also makes systematic use of lightweight design in the drive chain and the chassis. Many engines uses aluminium and vermicular graphite cast iron, which is the result of a high-tech production process, to reduce the weight of the crankcase. Many models have chassis with predominately aluminium parts.

Carbon fibre-ceramic brake discs are available as an option in the high-performance models. Other highlights of lightweight design include brake callipers, bonnets and boot lids, side panels or cover components made of aluminium and steering wheel rims or instrument panel mounts made of magnesium.

Experience from the world of motor sports flows back into the development work ““ the reduction and distribution of weight are extremely important for Audi’s pioneering diesel-engined Le Mans sports-prototypes and its DTM (touring) cars. The race cars provide the production development engineers with important information about carbon and its combination with metal.

Research continues into new materials and alloys, with the focus on minimal weight with maximum durability as well as design and fabrication compatible with the materials.
