Audi is hinting that it will produce a crossover based on the new A1 compact hatchback. Known so far as the Audi Q1 that model will expand the A1 range with a more premium compact SUV that will compete with the Mini Countryman and BMW X1.

“We are not looking at what other manufacturers are doing, but we are looking at different body types”, an Audi inside told WhatCar. “You’ve seen how our SUVs have been getting smaller – Q7, Q5, Q3 – and the A1 platform could go in that direction, but nothing is planned for the near future.”

The insider said that a A1 convertible version is unlikely since it would be to close to the Audi A3 Cabriolet.

Power for the Audi A1 quattro comes from a 2.0 TFSI 4-cylinder direct-injected gasoline engine making 256-hp at 6,000 rpm with a maximum torque of 258 lb-ft between 2,500 and 4,500 rpm. Mated to a 6-speed manual transmission, 0 to 62 mph comes in just 5.7 seconds with a top speed of 152 mph. Audi said that every detail of the 4-cylinder engine has been optimized for high performance and low fuel consumption. Fuel-economy comes in at 27.67 mpg.

While quattro all-wheel-drive is permanent, during normal driving conditions most of the engine’s power is sent to the front wheels. If traction decreases, the clutch can transfer some of the torque to the rear axle in just a few milliseconds. Also, if a wheel on one of the axles should slip, it is braked by the electronic differential lock (EDL).

The Audi A1 quattro will only be available in Glacier White metallic with a roof-painted in black. The front and rear bumper have been redesigned to be more muscular. However, the thing that stands out the most on the Audi A1 quattro are the 8.0 J x 18 cast alloy wheels. They are Glacier White, feature a turbine design and are wrapped in 225/35-series tires.

Inside, Audi A1 quattro owners will get the company’s MMI plus navigation system, Bose sound system, Bluetooth, Google Earth and an integrated WLAN hotspot.

Joining the new Audi A1 Sportback at the 2011 Tokyo Motor Show is a special edition A1 3-door hatch with the colors of the Japanese national soccer team. Known as the Audi A1 Samurai Blue, the model shows Audi’s respect for Japan’s soccer (known as football everywhere else in the world) team – the model will go on sale as a one-off model with the proceeds going to charity.

The special one-off model gets 18-inch wheels with an exclusive polygonal design, a black interior with contrasting stitching in blue and corresponding colorful accents for the air vent nozzles, inlays, center console and floor mats.

Power comes from a 1.4 liter TFSI making 122-hp.

Audi says it plans to sell a limited edition model next year based on the Samurai Blue model.

The new 2.0-liter TDI tops out on torque at 236 lb-ft of torque between 1750 and 2500rpm, with 141-hp. The 0-62mph time comes in at 8.2 seconds, with six speed manual gearbox that shifts all the way up to the 135 mph top speed.

The A1 Black Edition now comes with two engine options, either the new 2.0-liter TDI or a 182-hp 1.4-liter TFSI petrol. Priced around $1,500 USD, the S line package includes black styling for the exterior, dark tinted rear windows, Xenon Plus headlights, LED daytime-running lights, and 18-inch alloys. The interior is upgraded with a 180-watt speaker upgrade and full electronic climate control.

Audi’s Contrast Edition comes with a slightly higher price tag, but includes contrasting roof line colors, an aero package, 17-inch alloys and the option of a contrasting double-blade roof spoiler.

When Audi talks about concentrating on the future of its electric vehicle lineup – it’s not joking. The brand today launched 20 pilot Audi A1 e-tron units on the roads of Munich.  Audi, E.ON, the public utility Stadtwerke München and Technische Universität München (TUM) are project partners in this fleet trial.

E.ON and SWM are in charge of expanding and maintaining the charging infrastructure in the Munich metropolitan area.

While some pilot participants received their keys last week, Audi handed over the rest of the A1 e-tron fleet to project partners and other trial participants.

The Audi A1 e-tron makes a total of 102-hp with an electric-motor and range extender engine. Top speeds can hit 80 mph with a total operating range of 155 miles. Audi says that the A1 e-tron was developed for daily driving in metropolitan areas. It averages a fuel-ecoomy of 123.80 US mpg.

MTM’s has released their version of the Audi A1, called the Nardo Edition.Apart from some head turning paint, the exterior remains mostly untouched, with the exception of wheel covers used to upgrade aerodynamics.

It seems that under the hood is where the Nardo Edition sees all the action.

Audi, in good ‘ol traditional fashion, has been keeping up its efforts with diesel as they are becoming more powerful, clean and efficient than ever. As a result, Audi continues with their push to clean their cars’ emissions figures and the latest A1 TDI has becoming more efficient than ever.

Available now in SE, Sport and S-Line trim, the Audi A1 1.6 TDI has a reduced CO2 output of 99g/km versus the old 105g/km and the official fuel economy figure was increased from 70.6 mpg to 74.3 mpg. This can be attributed to optimization of the fuel delivery system and engine management.

When paired with Audi’s five-speed manual, the A1 TDI can go from 0-60 in around 10.5 seconds and onto a top speed of 118 mph.

Base price for the A1 TDI starts at £14,480 and can go up to £17,865 when optioned out.

Audi launched production of the new Audi A1 nearly one year ago and the German automaker announced today that it has built the 100,000th model. To mark the occasion, King Albert II of Belgium visited the site in the Forest district of Brussels.

“We are very honored that the King of Belgium has taken such a great interest in Audi and that he has visited our plant,” said Rupert Stadler, Chairman of the Board of Management of Audi. “The Forest site has been part of the Audi family – and the Company’s success story – for four years now. With the Audi A1, Audi Brussels is making a major contribution to the dynamic growth of our brand.”

Audi has invested roughly €300 million to bring the plant up to the state of the art since its acquisition in 2007.

Senner has had its fun with the Audi A1 tuning kit. The tune comes complete with engine, interior, and exterior modifications, and is available for $52,300 after over $14,000 in upgrades is completed.

On the outside, unique, but not over the top modifications start with a metallic teak brown coat of paint for the body. The deep color is contrasted by white accents along the roof arches, mirrors, and side sills. The white also extends to the 19-inch alloy Barracuda Tzunamee, nicely sized at 225/35/R19.

To better compliment the new exterior color scheme, the grille also gets a fresh coat of glossy black. Other exterior mods include a rear bumper housing two exhaust outlets, a new front apron and side skirts.

Under the hood is an upgraded version of the stock 1.4-liter TFSI motor that puts out 122-hp at about 195 lb-ft. This gets pushed up to 165-hp at 195 lb-ft thanks to a custom-tailored ECU and a modified sports exhaust system. KW provided adjustable sports suspension to compensate for the updates.

Taking a look inside, the seats are covered with two-tone fabrics with coordinating floor mats. The infotainment system was also improved.

Overall, not bad, although the roof arches leave me feeling undecided. Your thoughts, readers?

Senner Tuning Audi A1:

Audi recently showcased its 503-hp A1 Clubsport at the annual Worthersee GTI Festival in Austria: a gathering that was founded by GTI enthusiasts and gained attention by Audi, SEAT, Skoda and Volkswagen themselves. What does that mean? It means that Audi might be in the works of a future RS1 model, as even hinted by their head of design, Stefan Sielaff.

“Internally we refer to this car (the Clubsport) as the RS1,” he said.

Featuring a highly tuned version of the 2.5L five-banger, which normally produces 332-hp and is found in the TTRS and the RS3 Sportback, the Audi A1 Clubsport’s was reworked to produce 503-hp after also being reworked to 400-hp in an experimental TT. Mated to a six-speed manual cog swapper with Audi’s traditional Quattro all-wheel drive system, the Audi A1 Clubsport can get from 0-60 in 3.7 seconds and do 0-124 in 11 seconds.

“The A1′s engine bay doesn’t need modified to house the five-cylinder motor,” said the design chief. Additionally, the A1’s steel unibody was lightened by 400kg thanks to large doses of carbon fiber.

Currently, Sielaff said that the model current rendition would be way extreme for mass production, not because of cost, but because there’s much more design and engineering potential such as reducing the car’s weight by an additional 200kg.

On the outside, all of the panels are wider than on the standard A1 and on the inside, the rear seats were removed so that racing harnesses and two crash helmets could be placed, both donning the names of Audi’s CEO Rpert Stadler and R&D’s chief Michael Dick.

It gives the impression of having just emerged from the shop, freshly painted, on its way to the first rollout on the race track. The Audi A1 clubsport quattro is a one-off vehicle built to the limits of technology for breathtaking dynamics. Audi is presenting the showcar in Reifnitz, in the Austrian state of Kärnten, at the Wörtherseetour 2011. The 30th edition of this major meeting for Audi, Seat, Skoda and VW fans takes place from June 1 – 4, 2011.

The heart of the Audi A1 clubsport quattro is a classic Audi gasoline engine – a five-cylinder unit displacing 2.5 liters with turbocharging and direct fuel injection. Compared with the version used in the Audi TT RS and RS 3 Sportback on which it is based, the output of the TFSI has been increased dramatically to 370 kW (503 hp) and 660 Nm (486.79 lb-ft) of torque. Maximum power is available between 2,500 and 5,300 rpm.

The turbocharger, intercooler, admission tract and the exhaust line have been systematically tuned for high performance. As on the Audi A4 DTM, the tailpipe is located on the left flank, just in front of the rear wheel.

Another area where the A1 clubsport quattro shines is its overall weight of just 1,390 kilograms (3,064 lb). The powerful engine catapults the car from 0 to 100 km/h (62.14 mph) in 3.7 seconds. From 0 to 200 km/h (124.27 mph) takes just 10.9 seconds, while the car goes from 80 to 120 km/h (49.71 to 74.56 mph) in fourth gear in just 2.4 seconds.

A six-speed manual transmission and quattro permanent all-wheel drive, both taken from the TT RS and enhanced, deliver the power to all four wheels. Top speed is governed at 250 km/h (155.34 mph).

The Audi showcar rolls on 255/30 low-profile tires mounted on 19-inch alloy wheels with a unique turbine design. Sitting behind the wheels are large, internally ventilated disc brakes. Up front, six-piston calipers grab perforated carbon fiber-ceramic discs. Large steel discs are mounted on the rear axle. The coilover suspension of the A1 clubsport quattro features adjustable compression and rebound damping.

Dynamic and brawny: the exterior
Sporting a very dynamic appearance and an exquisite finish, the showcar makes no secret of its potential. The body has a Glacier White matt paint finish, with accents provided by many add-on parts. The roof arch in high-gloss black supports a roof made of carbon fiber-reinforced polymer (CFRP), and the four rings at the front of the car are solid aluminum.

Large, split air intakes with carbon struts are integrated into the distinctively modified front skirt. The single-frame radiator grille sports a black honeycomb design, and the headlights feature matted clasps with a red “wing.” Heat from the engine compartment is dissipated via two large air outlets in the hood.

The front fenders, the doors and the rear side panels of the Audi A1 clubsport quattro have been widened by a total of 60 millimeters (2.36 in). They form horizontal “blister” edges, like those found on the Audi Ur-quattro. Air outlets are integrated into the rear ends of the fenders, and the newly designed trim strips on the sills are made of exposed CFRP. Sleek side mirrors are reminiscent of the Audi R8 high-performance sports car.

The rear of the showcar is dominated by the roof spoiler, which features a double wing to provide for sufficient downforce. Darkly toned rear lights and a large, closed diffuser hone the rear view of the A1 clubsport quattro.

Designed as a road vehicle for the race track, the showcar has no rear seat. In its place are a large crossbar to further stiffen the body and storage for racing helmets. A weight-optimized starter battery used in racing is mounted in the rear below the two storage compartments. The strict high-performance concept left no room for an infotainment system, an MMI monitor or even a loudspeaker. The lightweight bucket seats are taken from the Audi R8 GT and feature a chassis made of carbon fiber-reinforced polymer. Red four-point belts secure the driver and passenger.

The interior of the showcar is a study in dark gray. Large areas are covered with exposed, matt-finished CFRP, including the walls in the rear section of the car, the tubes of the air vents and the “stern of the yacht” in the lower section of the center console. The CFRP material used on the open-spoked sport steering wheel is covered with leather. Rocker switches on the center console replace switches on the control stalk and in the door panels. Three additional instruments indicate the oil pressure, boost pressure and electrical system voltage.

The center console and the seats are covered in fine leather upholstery with tone-on-tone stitching. The selector lever is made of aluminum; the caps of the pedals and the surface of the footrest are made of stainless steel. Red loops replace the handles on the doors, the glove box and the covers of the storage compartments.

2012 Audi A7

Audi today reported the best first-quarter in the company’s history after delivering 312,600 vehicles in the first three months of 2011, an increase of 18.4 percent worldwide than the same period in 2010 (264,017).

Audi said it increased revenue in the first quarter of 2011 by 27.3 percent in comparison with the same period last year to €10,514 million (2010: €8,260 million). Audi plans to increase deliveries of the core brand to around 1.2 million vehicles in 2011.

“These earnings show that our qualitative growth strategy is working,” said Axel Strotbek, Member of the Board of Management for Finance and Organization at Audi. Thanks to the strong earnings performance, the 10.6 percent operating return on sales (2010: 5.8 percent) follows on from the good results in the third and fourth quarters of 2010. This strong growth underscores the high profitability of the Audi Group.

Audi said that the A8 sedan, A7 sportback and the A1 contributed greatly to making 2010 the strongest year in terms of sales. It said that demand for these models remained high in the first quarter of 2011.

2011 Audi A1

When its comes to sales figures, Audi has always dreamt about competing neck-and-neck with its German competitors including BMW and Mercedes-Benz. Well, the Ingolstadt automaker may just be catching up to its German rivals.

Audi said that it ended the best first quarter in its history with strong results for March, with around 125,700 deliveries amounting to an increase of 13.9 percent. Audi sold around 312,600 cars in the first three months of 2011, an 18.4 percent increase over the same period last year. The German automaker said that growth rates in all regions were in a clear double-digit range.

Sales figures of the Audi A1 helped contribute to the grown in the first quarter of 2011, In March alone, 13,880 customers opted for the smallest Audi available. Since January Audi has sold nearly 31,000 units of the A1, which is primarily sold in Europe. Hopefully that will give Audi a push to bring the A1 to the United States.

Audi said that it expects the new 2012 Audi A6 to also make a significant contribution to sales in the coming months.

“The A6 is very successful in its segment. With the new generation we see even greater potential – especially in China and the United States, but in Germany as well,” said Peter Schwarzenbauer, Member of the Board of Management for Marketing and Sales at Audi. “Over the life-cycle of the new A6 Sedan we want to exceed the total sales volume of its predecessor by around 25 percent.”

Who said small cars were bad in the snow? While all of the automotive industry was focused on the 2011 Detroit Auto Show earlier this week, Audi slipped in a small press release confirming that it is testing a Audi A1 quattro prototype, which will lead to a future all-wheel-drive version of the subcompact hatchback.

The new A1 quattro will ensure quattro all-wheel-drive fully represented across the Audi range.

“The latest member of the burgeoning quattro family uses technology very similar to that used in A3 and TT models, Audi said in a statement. “At its core is an electronically controlled, hydraulically actuated multi-plate clutch located in front of the rear axle for an optimized distribution of weight. Inside is a package of plates that rotate in an oil bath.”

One of the development vehicles is taking part in the ‘Fascination of quattro’ event taking place in Montreal to celebrate the past, present and future of the legendary four-wheel-drive system.

Audi A1 e-tron

Audi denied reports coming out of Germany that it plans to launch sales of a series production electric version of an A1 with a range-extending rotary engine against the wishes of parent Volkswagen. Financial Times Deutschland reported on Monday that Audi plans to go its own way on electric-cars by developing for production an A1 powered by a lithium ion battery and a small gasoline combustion engine.

The newspaper said that Audi wants to sell a rotary engine EV to give it a stand-out competitor to BMW’s upcoming Megacity vehicle.

Denying the reports, anAudi spokesman told Automotive News Europe: “There is no problem between VW and Audi.”

Audi unveiled the A1 e-tron concept at the 2010 Geneva Motor Show, calling it a “near-series production vehicle.”

Refresher: The Audi A1 e-tron is a “near-series” vehicle based on the A1 and is powered by a synchronous electric motor that produces a continuous output of 61-hp with a peak output of 102-hp available in short bursts. On a full charge of the lithium-ion batteries, the Audi A1 e-tron can travel 31 miles in city traffic. After the battery has been depleted, the A1 e-tron uses a Wankel engine as a range-extender along with an electrical generator with a charge rating of up to 15 kW. That allows it to travel an additional 124 miles. Top speed comes in at 81 mph.

The Audi A1, while compact, received a top score of five stars for crash safety from the Euro NCAP.

“Euro NCAP’s demanding test requirements far exceed the standards of European lawmakers, Audi said in a statement. “The testers gave the A1 scores for adult occupant protection in frontal, rear and side impact collisions that easily earned the vehicle the top rating of five stars. The very good scores for child occupant protection underscore the excellent results.”

To enhance safety, the Audi A1 also comes standard with high-performance ESP stabilization system with electronic limited slip differential, which is one of the first items in the requirements specification for the development of the Audi A1. This system is responsible for the A1’s high stability and very neutral handling in corners. The A1 scores extremely well in independent comparison tests.

Many North American Audi fans are feeling left out without the company’s new A1 hatchback – however, recent reports there is a high likeliness that the second-generation Audi A1 will make it to our side of the world… but that’s not all. According to recent reports, Audi is planning a big expansion in the United States with small cars.

Besides the A1, Audi is considering adding a sedan version of the A3 along with a smaller version of the R8 sports car (aka R4). Also in the works is a small A2 electric-car and a Q3 small crossovers.

“We have seen the challenging targets from the government, and we will bring a response to go for lighter cars and also smaller cars,” said Audi’s U.S. CEO Johan de Nysschen.

Compact fans may now rejoice.

Refresher: The 2011 Audi A1 will go on sale in Europe later this year with prices starting around 16,000 euros ($22,062 USD). Power will come from a lineup of 4-cylinder engines, which consists of two TDI diesels and two TFSI gasoline units with output ranging from 84-hp to 122-hp. Mated to a 7-speed S tronic transmission, fuel-economy will range from 44 mpg and 62 mpg.
