Taking a break from all the GM news today we’re going to bring you some news from the supercar world. The folks at PistonHeads apparently ran into some Aston Martin test-drivers on a trip to the Nurburgring. Besides seeing the Aston Martin Rapide, the Aston Martin drivers were hanging out with a DBS prototype.

While the group remained tight-lipped about the car, Nurburgring sources are saying that Aston Martin is working on a hardcore version of the DBS. Think of it as an “R” type package with a bunch of performance upgrades and sleeker looks. If sources are to be believed, you can expect some suspension and power upgrades.

Will it happen? Only time will tell.

When the Aston Martin DBS Volante made its debut at the 2009 Geneva Motor Show, Aston released only a couple of studio shots. In between, the Aston Martin Rapide and the Aston Martin Cygnet, the folks at Gaydon have found a little time to take some real-life shots of the DBS Volante.

Refresher: Power comes from the same 6.0L V12 from the DBS Coupe producing 510-hp and a maximum torque of 420 lb-ft. 0 to 62 mph time of 4.3 seconds with a top speed of 191 mph. The engine can be mated to a 6-speed manual gearbox or the Touchtronic 2 6-speed gearbox with electronic shift-by-wire control system. The motorized retractable fabric roof comes down in 14 seconds and can be activated at speeds of up to 30 mph at the touch of a button.

Sitting there at the Aston Martin display being overshadowed by the new One-77 is the Aston Martin DBS Volante.

Completing that DBS lineup the Aston Martin DBS Volante features an electric fabric roof that comes down in just 14 seconds and can be operated at speed of up to 30 mph. Of course, that means keeping an easy force on the accelerator which gives the 510-hp 6.0L V12 the ability to push the DBS Volante from 0 to 62 mph in 4.3 seconds. Power is transferred to the wheels by a 6-speed manual or Aston’s new Touchtronic 2 6-speed transmission.

Deliveries for the Aston Martin DBS Volante will begin in the third-quarter of 2009. It will make its U.S. debut at the 2009 New York Auto Show.

Press Release:

Aston Martin DBS Volante: Fusing Open Top Motoring With the Ultimate Luxury Sports Car

    – The ultimate open air motoring experience
– Lightweight fabric hood preserving DBS’s purity of lines and beauty
– Class leading handling characteristics and torsional strength
– At home in the town or city as on country roads

Aston Martin will premiere the DBS Volante at the Geneva Auto Salon on the 3rd March 2009. Completing the DBS line-up, the new Volante will afford customers the combination of the DBS’s already-established benchmark sports car characteristics with all the thrills of open-air motoring.

Broadening the DBS’s character, the DBS Volante will appeal to drivers who wish to combine the excitement of driving a finely-tuned sports car with the invigorating feeling of being open to the elements. This juxtaposition of ultimate performance and openness stirs the senses on any drive whether an exhilarating jaunt on favoured roads or cruising on lengthy journeys. ‘Volante’, meaning ‘moving with light rapidity’, perfectly defines the performance potential and the dynamic characteristics of the DBS Volante.

Featuring a motorised retractable fabric roof, the DBS’s beautiful profile is preserved whether up or down. When the roof is closed, it provides a warm comfortable ambience and when open, it neatly disappears behind the new tonneau cover at the touch of a button.

Aston Martin’s Chief Executive Officer, Dr Ulrich Bez said: “The DBS Volante delivers the utmost relaxed driving experience with the hood up or down. It combines engineering excellence with design perfection.

“The DBS Volante offers a subtle mix of power and performance. Adding to this, the fine craftsmanship – it is an unparalleled ownership and driving experience.” Conceived as a Volante from the outset, Aston Martin engineers opted for a fabric hood to closely follow the silhouette of the DBS coupe and due to its lightweight properties, minimise overall weight gain. Fully retractable in only 14 seconds and at up to speeds of 30 mph (48 km/h), the roof will automatically stow under the newly sculpted tonneau, maintaining the DBS Volante’s perfect form – hood up or down.

Power is provided by Aston Martin’s hand-built all alloy 6.0-litre V12 engine producing 510 bhp (380 kW / 517 PS), and 570 Nm (420 lb ft) of torque with a top speed of 191 mph (307 km/h) and 0-62 mph (0-100 km/h) time of 4.3 seconds. The nature of the V12, and in particular the torque available at all engine speeds, serves to provide effortless driving in all situations.

Aston Martin’s 16th convertible in 95 years, the DBS Volante draws on the marque’s extensive experience in designing iconic ‘Volantes’ and is a 2+2 featuring two occasional rear seats, ideal for young people or extra luggage. In standard specification, the DBS has a rear-mounted six-speed manual gearbox, while an automatic six-speed ‘Touchtronic’ option is also available. As with the coupe, the Volante is offered with carbon ceramic brakes as standard providing exceptional stopping power. Benefitting from materials derived from the motorsport and aerospace industries, the bonnet, front wings and boot lid are made from carbon fibre all helping to reduce weight.

The DBS Volante also comes with Bang & Olufsen’s renowned ‘BeoSound DBS’ in-car entertainment system, featuring 13 speakers as standard equipment. The BeoSound DBS has been expertly tuned by Bang & Olufsen’s Tonmeisters and Aston Martin’s acoustic engineers specifically for the Volante resulting in a system that senses when the roof has been retracted and adjusts the sound stage to compensate for extra wind noise, providing an unrivalled automotive audio experience.

The DBS Volante will be built at Aston Martin’s global headquarters at Gaydon, Warwickshire with customer deliveries expected to commence during quarter three 2009 and prices will be confirmed at the Geneva Auto Salon.

• Don’t know manual? Don’t worry – you can still by an Aston Martin DBS.

• 6.0L V12 engine with 510-hp.

• Touchtronic 2 6-speed automatic transmission.

• 0 to 62 mph in 4.3 seconds; top speed comes in at 191 mph.

So you don’t know manual but you have enough money to buy an Aston Martin DBS? Don’t bother learning stick now because Aston Martin has now introduced (well they actually introduced it at the 2008 Paris Motor Show, this is just the U.S. debut of the model), the option of a Touchtronic 2 6-speed automatic transmission derived from the same ZF transaxle unit used in the DB9. The transmission features a final drive ratio from 3.15:1 to 3.46:1. That means it offers quicker acceleration time, improved performance and still offers the performance of a 6-speed manual.

Oh, and there is no gearbox. You can just select Park, Reverse, Neutral and Drive from the dashboard next to the key-fob insert. Pulling either of the leather-trimmed magnesium alloy paddles mounted on the steering will activate Touchtronic mode.

Aston Martin has also added additional features including a new Bang & Olufsen audio system and lightweight 10-spoke 20-inch forged aluminium wheels. Our favorite addition? You can now swap out the rear storage and get rid of the 2+0 arrangement with two rear-seats for 2+2 seating.

So right now you’re probably thinking “So what? We know that Aston Martin was owned by Ford so they were bound to share some parts.” However, when an owner of an Aston Martin V8 Vantage discovered that his leather-wrapped key fob was fading under the damage there it was – clearly written ‘Volvo.’

When Aston Martin was owned by Ford, the British sports car maker dipped deep into Ford’s parts bin and gathered everything from sat-navs, switchgears, windows and mirror switches, but when owning a key to an exclusive Aston Martin we think a customer would appreciate it if someone at the company took the time to remove ‘Volvo’ from the key fob.

“The keyfob was damaged when we got it back from the client,’ Edward Legge, general manager of Rio Prestige hire told CAR. “Our reaction was amusement and slight horror. We all know they share parts, but you would have thought someone would have invested a tenner to rub the name off.”

Just so you know Ford still has a $65 million stake in Aston Martin, but Aston Martin assures you that the old-keys will now be replaced by the amusing “Emotion Control Units’ and the glass key fobs you find in the new DBS.

Aston Martin is confused. According to AutoTelegraaf, the sports car maker is not sure it wants to carry over the ‘Roadster’ or ‘Volante’ badge for its DBS convertible that is due out next year. A company spokesman said that the brand is still looking for a suitable name for the open-top DBS.

Aston Martin currently uses ‘Roadster’ for its two-seater drop-top V8 Vantage. The ‘Volante’ badge is used on the four-seater DB9. The Aston Martin DBS seats two.

Power comes for the open-top DBS will come from the same 6.0L V12 that produces 510-hp. Top speed should be limited to 191mph.
Daniel Craig recently learned that playing 007 has some serious perks. The new James Bond has just landed himself a lifetime driving deal with Aston Martin. When he’s not driving the Aston Martin DBS in the movie or crashing it into quarries, Craig has a free pass from Aston Martin to take any of their cars for a spin.

Craig can borrow the cars to drive on the streets or when he really wants to let loose, Craig can hit up Aston Martin’s test track.

“I’m lucky enough that if I desperately want to drive in an Aston Martin, the company is just fantastic to me,” said Craig in a statement. “They’ll let me go on a track and drive one all day long.”

The perk made Craig decide not to buy an Aston for himself. He says: “I could drive it faster and more furiously (on the track) than anywhere on the road. I live in London (and) it doesn’t make any sense to drive an Aston Martin there. I’ve nowhere to park it.”

There are fans and then there are obsessive fans. The latter goes for one fan that brought a crashed Aston Martin DBS that plunged into a lake in northern Italy during the filming of Quantum of Solace.

According to 007 Daniel Craig himself, the crashed DBS was brought by a collector for a total of £200,000 – that converts into $350,364. That’s about $120,000 more than a new Aston DBS sells for.

Before Aston Martin engineers and designers get really busy with the upcoming Rapide, One-77, DBS convertible and the Vantage V12 RS, they will be giving the current DBS, the company’s flagship, a number of enhancements. The most important of those upgrades will be a new gearbox called Touchtronic 2.

The new automatic transmission is an alternative to the standard 6-speed manual that comes with the DBS. The Touchtronic 2 transmission has basically been re-engineered from the ZF seen in the DB9 to handle DBS’ power and performance. Final drive ratio have been shortened from 3.15:1 to 3.46:1, gear shifts are more aggressive and the DBS keeps its 0-60 mph time of 4.3 seconds. When in ‘Drive’ the driver can use leather-trimmed magnesium alloy paddles on steering to activate Touchtronic mode.

Other than that the Aston Martin DBS gets Bang & Olufsen BeSound system, 2+2 seating, and new lightweight 20-inch aluminum wheels with diamond turned surface.

Prices start at $269,000 for the 6-speed manual DBS and $273,000 for the Touchtronic version.

Press Release:

Aston Martin and Bang & Olufsen announce a new bespoke audio system

September 15, 2008: Aston Martin and Bang & Olufsen are proud to announce the new BeoSound DBS audio system designed specifically for Aston Martin. The result of a creative partnership between Aston Martin and Bang & Olufsen, the BeoSound DBS is one of the finest in-car audio systems on the market. Engineered to exceed all expectations, the BeoSound DBS embodies the essence of sound and motion, demonstrating conclusively that high fidelity is perfectly compatible with high performance.

The collaboration between Aston Martin and Bang & Olufsen marks the coming together of two innovative companies with a longstanding proud tradition in technology and design. Blending an unrelenting quest for technical excellence with an uncompromising commitment to quality and style, both companies have the courage to go far beyond the conventional.

Bang & Olufsen’s audio system is seamlessly integrated into the DBS’s bespoke interior, providing the driver with an unrivalled audio experience. Consisting of 13 individual speakers and Bang & Olufsen’s unique Digital Signal Processing system, the system transforms the DBS into an acoustically sophisticated venue, capable of conveying subtle and striking musical dynamics from every source.

The BeoSound DBS system demonstrates a commitment to innovation, high-technology manufacturing and traditional craft skills; qualities inherent in both Aston Martin and Bang & Olufsen. “Without technological innovation, neither Aston Martin nor Bang & Olufsen would have achieved the reputation they have today as leaders in both design and performance,” said Dr Ulrich Bez, Aston Martin’s Chief Executive Officer, “the BeoSound DBS represents the ultimate fusion of technology and artistry. We are extremely proud to offer this system in the DBS.”

The Bang & Olufsen BeoSound DBS system has been developed exclusively for Aston Martin. The system is acoustically and physically matched to the DBS, with a design that follows the inherent quality and material honesty of the Aston Martin interior. The loudspeaker grilles are finished with smoothly contoured aluminium so as to integrate seamlessly with the fluid lines and curves of the cabin. When the system is turned on, the twin acoustic lens speakers emerge silently and swiftly, adding a touch of theatre and technological panache that is the perfect complement to the Aston Martin DBS.

“We are proud to present the first unique audio system of our collaboration with Aston Martin. BeoSound DBS is a high-quality, high-performance system for a remarkable performance car,“ says Karl Kristian Hvidt Nielsen, Bang & Olufsen President and Chief Executive Officer.

Bang & Olufsen’s experts worked in close collaboration with Aston Martin’s product development team, ensuring optimum speaker placement to take account of the unique aluminium structure of the car. The result is a system that has become an integral part of the Aston Martin, creating an incomparable ambience which embraces both design and performance. As a result, the sound is crisp and clear at all volumes, making the audio system the perfect match for the commanding performance of the Aston Martin.

The BeoSound DBS system incorporates Bang & Olufsen’s proprietary ICEpower® technology, a fusion of high power and hi-fi sound quality with ultra-compact design and sleek, functional operation. The proprietary and automatically operated ALT (Acoustic Lens Technology) motorised tweeter units mounted either side of the dashboard enable 180° horizontal dispersion of high frequencies, giving listeners an improved sense of space, staging and realism, regardless of their location in the car. In addition to the two tweeters incorporated into the ALT, the system comprises five mid-range speakers, three further tweeters and three woofers, including a powerful 200mm subwoofer mounted beneath the rear bench. In all, thirteen speakers are positioned in ten locations around the car.

The system is acoustically tuned by Bang & Olufsen’s advanced Digital Signal Processing (DSP) unit, which stage manages the musical performance to accommodate the in-car experience. Coupled with hours of research by Bang & Olufsen’s technicians, all 13 speakers are tuned to work together in harmony to deliver an outstanding listening experience. The DSP also provides dynamic modelling that adapts automatically to changing acoustic conditions, allowing the occupants to concentrate on an engaging driving and listening experience.

Both Aston Martin and Bang & Olufsen appreciate the value of individuality. Bang & Olufsen ensures the human element is integral at every stage of the design and manufacturing processes, from the key role played by the classically trained tonmeisters – literally ‘masters of sound’ – to the hand finished products. Aston Martin takes the same approach: all their cars carry the name plate of the engineer who completes the final inspection. Joining forces to further their continuous quest for perfection, Aston Martin and Bang & Olufsen have delivered an exhilarating driving and listening experience to their discerning customers.

The ultimate 007 accessory for the Aston Marin DBS has arrived. Aston Martin announced today that it will debut the AMVOX2 DBS Transponder watch on the eve of the Paris Motor Show. The AMVOX2 DBS Transponder is the first wrist-watch to allow control access to an Aston Martin.

Produced by Jaeger-LeCoultre, the watch has an integrated transponder circuit that allows DBS owners to start their car. The outer dial has an opening that reveals internal layout of the chronograph and transponder functions. Authorization of the watch to communicate with the owner’s DBS will only be made by Aston Martin dealerships to ensure security.

Oh and don’t expect pricing to be affordable - but if you own a DBS than you can definitely afford this exclusive accessory. We can just imagine two Aston Martin DBS owners discussing their beauties in a British accent when one goes “Oh you don’t have the AMVOX2 DBS Transponder. It’s just brilliant – watch this!’

Press Release:

Aston Martin introduces the AMVOX2 DBS Transponder

Gaydon 20th August 2008. Aston Martin is delighted to announce, in conjunction with its watch partner Jaeger LeCoultre, the AMVOX2 DBS Transponder, the first watch developed with the ability to control access into a luxury sports car.

The watch, which will be showcased on the eve of the Paris Motor Show is a fusion of traditional watchmaking expertise and high-tech engineering. Crafted exclusively for owners of the Aston Martin DBS, the AMVOX2 DBS Transponder is a yet another example that demonstrates the design and engineering collaboration between these two long-established companies; both leaders in their respective fields and partners since 2004.

By integrating the transponder circuit into the body of the watch, Jaeger-LeCoultre has created a timepiece that is entirely functional yet discrete, a masterpiece of miniaturisation and engineering that not only functions as a chronograph but as a key, making it the ultimate accessory for the ultimate sports car.

Only Aston Martin dealerships will be able to authorise the timepiece to ‘read’ and communicate with the owner’s specific DBS, ensuring that security and privacy are maintained at all times.

A powerful design inspired by cutting-edge engineering

The case and dial of the AMVOX2 DBS Transponder are highly detailed, featuring a suspended metallic grey DBS symbol, a discrete Aston Martin emblem on the movement operating indicator and ruthenium grey bridges, satin finish and a black dial that all evoke the DBS’s instrument panel. The outer dial ring also has an opening that reveals the internal mechanisms of the chronograph and transponder functions, an allusion to the exposed brake callipers visible behind the sporting wheel rims of the DBS car.

The AMVOX2 DBS Transponder watch is a landmark in chronograph design, a timepiece that works in true synergy with the most spectacular and elegant luxury sports car on the market. A true collaboration between engineers from two distinguished brands with a collective history of innovation and elegance, the AMVOX2 DBS Transponder is a modern timepiece that truly demonstrates

Aston Martin’s core values and Jaeger-LeCoultre’s mastery of high watchmaking.

Dr Ulrich Bez, Chief Executive Officer of Aston Martin said: “This is the definitive expression of the partnership between Aston Martin and Jaeger-LeCoultre, I’m delighted that we have been able to premiere this technology in such an elegant solution. It is the first time horology and automotive engineering have been combined in this way.”

Jerome Lambert, Chief Executive Officer of Jaeger-LeCoultre said: “This is one of the most exciting projects our team has developed in the area of functional innovation in watchmaking. The collaboration with all levels of the Aston Martin organisation has been deep and exhilarating, and no doubt this transpires in the breakthrough nature and design of the AMVOX2 DBS Transponder itself.”
