BMW’s M division may be enjoying a lot of publicity with the debut of a range of diesel powered M vehicles that will include the BMW M550d xDrive, BMW X5 M50d and the BMW X6 M50d - but its biggest competitor has no plans to offer a rival.

According to Mercedes-Benz AMG boss Ola Kallenius, the tuning arm of the Stuttgart-based automaker has no plans to go diesel. He says that such a move will introduce too many “compromises to its performance-focused line-up.”

“The technology of performance gasoline engines is converging with diesel tech,” he said giving the example of the new 5.5 liter V8 from AMG. “Direct injection, downsizing and turbocharging are all having an effect. We looked at diesel a few years back, but petrol engines have obvious benefits of sound, weight, agility and response.”

Mercedes-Benz unveiled its latest rendition of the hottest ML yet, the 2012 ML63 AMG, today at the 2011 Los Angeles Auto Show.

Powered by the brand’s 5.5L Bi-Turbo V8, the ML63 AMG churns out a whopping 518hp and 516 lb-ft of torque. The results are pretty straight forward, 0-60 in 4.7 seconds and a top speed electronically limited to 155 mph.

Based on the new W166 ML, the ML63 AMG comes with a lot of new kit, which includes a new active roll stabilization system called ACTIVE CURVE SYSTEM. The system actively controls the anti-roll bars to better control the ML63’s body roll. Additionally, the chassis is about 99 pounds lighter than the outgoing W164 ML63.

The 2012 Mercedes-Benz ML63 AMG will be making its public debut later this week at the 2011 LA Auto Show but the Stuttgart automaker has just released all the images and details of the new SUV.

“Like its predecessors, the 2012 ML63 AMG sets new standards in terms of performance, exclusivity and an outstanding driving experience – plus the efficiency factor, which is acquiring ever greater emphasis at Mercedes-AMG,” said Ola Kallenius, Chairman of Mercedes-AMG GmbH. “As the inventor of the high-performance SUV, we remain true to the philosophy which we introduced in 1999 with the 2000MY ML55 AMG and continued with the 2007MY ML63 AMG.”

So let’s get right down to the fun stuff. Power for the 2012 Mercedes-Benz ML63 AMG comes from a 5.5 liter V8 biturbo engine making 518-hp at 5,250 rpm with a maximum torque of 516 lb-ft between 1,750 – 5,000 rpm. That allows 0 to 60 mph to come in 4.7 seconds with a top speed of 155 mph. Buyers can add the AMG Performance Package, which increases output to 550-hp at 5,750 rpm and 560 lb-ft between 2,000 and 5,000 rpm. The package allows a 0 to 60 mph of 4.6 seconds with a top speed of 174 mph. The AMG Performance Package also adds an engine cover genuine carbon fiber, calipers painted in red and the AMG Performance steering wheel in Premium leather/DINAMICA.

The engine is mated to a AMG SPEEDSHIFT PLUS 7-speed automatic transmission with engine deactivation through one of the three driving programs. In ‘Controlled Efficiency mode (C) the ECO stop/start function activates and shuts down the big V8 when the vehicle is at a stand still. Other driver programs include Sport (S) and Manual (M).

The 2012 Mercedes-Benz ML63 AMG, which is 99 pounds lighter than its predecessor, also gets something called the ACTIVE CURVE SYSTEM for active roll stabilization. The system is standard and features active stabilizers on the front and rear axles to make-up for body roll during rough cornering.

On the inside, the new ML63 AMG comes standard with basically everything including AMG exclusive illuminated door sills, AMG sports pedals in brushed stainless steel with rubber studs, COMAND system with hard-drive navigation & SIRIUS real-time traffic & weather, 10-way power front seats w/door-mounted controls plus driver and passenger memory with 4-way lumbar support, Harman/Kardon Logic 7 surround sound system, HD radio, Bluetooth audio streaming, 7 inch display with central COMAND controller, 4.5″ color instrument cluster display, power lift gate, power sunroof and heated & active ventilated front seats

The 2012 Mercedes ML63 AMG will hit U.S. showrooms in the first quarter of 2012.

If you’re like me and have a love for Mercedes-Benz and their AMG brand, then this bit of news is just for you.

Affording the latest and greatest Mercedes-Benz and AMG cars can be a bit out of reach for some, like myself. So if you want to get a piece of Stuttgart’s AMG sub-brand without selling an arm and a leg, Mercedes-Benz AMG has just unveiled its accessories line that dons a carbon-fiber theme.

The apparel and accessories line features t-shirts with “bacteria-inhibiting carbon fibers” and luggage that feature the same materials. Additionally, if you’re a diecast collector like me, handcrafted models of AMG cars like the S65, CL65 and SLS AMG are also available and made by top brands such as Kyosho and AutoArt.

Pricing for the accessories have yet to be released.

Press Release:

Two-door coupe delivers up to 481 hp

March 20, 2011 – MONTVALE, NJ

The new 2012 C63 AMG Coupe designed by Mercedes-AMG combines distinctive design with a powerful drivetrain and dynamic handling. The new coupe joins the successful C63 AMG Sedan as well as the AMG family of coupes which includes the CLS63 AMG and the CL63AMG. The new coupe makes its U.S. showroom debut in September 2011.

The AMG 6.3-liter V8 engine in the C63 AMG Coupe delivers a maximum output of 451 hp and peak torque of 443 lb-ft. Reflecting its outstanding performance, the coupe is capable of accelerating from 0 to 60 mph in 4.4 seconds with a top speed of 155 mph (electronically limited). With these specifications, the new two-door vehicle is poised to take the lead in its segment.

The new coupe shares all the technology updates from the 2012 C63 AMG Sedan and features the AMG SPEEDSHIFT MCT 7-speed sports transmission with standard “Controlled Efficiency” mode, and a new power steering pump that helps to reduce fuel consumption.

AMG Development Package for a maximum output of 481 hp

This reduction in fuel consumption also applies to the C63 Coupe when equipped with the AMG Development Package which generates 481 hp. This optional package improves acceleration from 0 to 60 mph to 4.3 seconds thanks to technology transferred from the SLS AMG. The forged pistons, connectin grods and lightweight crankshaft adopted from the gullwing model’s high-tech drive system save 6.6 pounds in weight. This reduces rotational inertia and enhances the agility and responsiveness of the high-revving, eight-cylinder naturally aspirated engine. Top speed increases as well to 174 mph (electronically limited). Visually, the AMG performance package can be identified by the variable intake manifold finished in titanium grey under the hood, the AMG high-performance braking system with two-piece front rotors and red painted brake calipers, the carbon fiber trunk lid spoiler and the AMG performance steering wheel in premium leather with an Alcantara® grip area.

Standard AMG SPEEDSHIFT MCT 7-speed sports transmission

The AMG SPEEDSHIFT MCT 7-speed sports transmission provides direct and agile power delivery. In place of the traditional torque converter, this innovative transmission features a compact, wet start-up clutch which reduces the power losses normally associated with conventional automatic transmissions and significantly lowers fuel consumption. The Controlled Efficiency “C” mode provides early, comfortable upshifts while maintaining the lowest possible engine speed and “soft” accelerator characteristics to help improve fuel economy.

The exclusive Mercedes-AMG power transmission offers a high level of versatility and performance. The “S”, “S+” and “M” modes deliver increased agility and are selected via the new rotary control knob familiar from the SLS AMG. Faster gear changes and higher revs add to the emotional experience as well as rev-matching in “S”, “S+” and “M” modes. Gear changes in the “S+” and “M” modes take just 100 milliseconds and the RACE START function allows the driver to harness the vehicle’s full acceleration capability.

Specific AMG sports suspension for quick acceleration and ride comfort

It’s not just the engine and MCT transmission which influence the C63 AMG Coupe’s aggressive character – the AMG sports suspension and AMG high-performance braking system are also key here. Compared with the standard suspension, the AMG coupe has a separate three-link front suspension, a reinforced multi-link independent rear suspension and a wider track front and rear. The stiffer elastokinematics, autonomous axle kinematics with more negative camber and larger anti-roll bars result in greater agility and lateral acceleration. Specially adjusted spring and damper rates have optimized both the responsiveness of the suspension as well as road noise and tire vibration.

The AMG speed-sensitive sports steering with a direct ratio (13.5: 1) provides excellent road feel and contributes to the nimble driving experience. The precise steering is complemented by three-stage ESP¨, the Electronic Stability Program that enables three individual control strategies to be accessed at the touch of a button. The driver can use the ESP¨ switch on the center console to choose between ESP ON, ESP SPORT and ESP OFF modes. The AMG high-performance braking system with internally ventilated and perforated discs at the corners provide maximum responsiveness, short stopping distances and high fade resistance.

Confident and athletic: the design of the C63 AMG Coupe

Visually, the coupe version of the C63 AMG has a confident, athletic presence that is reminiscent of the high-performance SL63 AMG roadster. The C63 AMG Coupe has a sinister low profile, powerful shoulderline and a narrow C-pillar, combined with short overhangs, long hood, steeply raked windshield and long, sloping roof.

As is typical for AMG, the car has a striking, arrow-shaped front section with the new AMG front apron housing a high-gloss black horizontal edge, AMG-specific LED daytime running lights and side air outlets. The large Mercedes star sits on a wing-shaped transverse lamella in the new radiator grille, while a modified aluminum hood with powerdomes, emphasizes the strong character of the car. The new clear-lens headlamps are particularly eye-catching, especially when equipped with the optional Lighting Package which includes bi-xenon headlamps.

The wide front fender bearing the “6.3 AMG” script, AMG rocker panels and the new 18-inch 5-twin-spoke AMG light-alloy wheels painted in titanium grey with a high-gloss finish dominate the side view. Excellent contact with the road is provided by the wide 235/40 R 18 (front) and 255/35 R 18 (rear) tires.

At the rear, the unique AMG rear apron has a distinctive, black diffuser insert and three pronounced diffuser fins along with two chromed twin tailpipes of the AMG sports exhaust system.

High-quality, dramatic interior

Inside, the instrument cluster with integrated screen immediately recalls the new CLS63 AMG with three separate round gauges providing information on speed, engine rpm, fuel level, and coolant temperature. Other display options are available through the AMG main menu accessible via the multifunction buttons on the steering wheel. The three-dimensional TFT color display located inside the speedometer welcomes the driver by showing an AMG logo.

The specially shaped AMG performance steering wheel has been adopted from the CLS63 AMG and includes flattened top and bottom sections, metallic trim elements, grip areas trimmed in perforated leather, and aluminum shift paddles. The instrument cluster and center console are trimmed in high-gloss black piano lacquer while the dashboard and doors feature aluminum trim; optional carbon fiber or wood trims are also available. The rotary control for selecting the C, S, S+, M transmission modes and RACE START is situated on the center console.

The new AMG sports seats with integrated head restraints, EASY-ENTRY system and AMG badges have a sporty design with horizontal stitching. Combined M-B Tex/DINAMICA black upholstery comes as standard. DINAMICA is a new type of breathable man-made fiber which is pleasing to the touch and is characterized by low emissions and high durability. The side bolsters of the AMG sports seats are covered in M-B Tex while the center panels of the seat cushions are upholstered with DINAMICA. The C63 AMG Coupe is a proper four-seater with the rear seats featuring the same style of horizontal stitching as the AMG sports seats. Standard split-folding rear seats help expand available cargo capacity.

Optional leather interior appointments help individualize the inside with four single tone and three two-tone combinations.

High level of safety and new assistance systems

With nine airbags as standard, belt tensioners and belt-force limiters for all seats, the C63 AMG Coupe has extensive safety features. The airbags, which can deploy in milliseconds in the event of an accident, include front, side and pelvic bags for the driver and front passenger, a kneebag on the driver’s side, and windowbags.

With a number of driving assistance systems ranging from ATTENTION ASSIST drowsiness detection to Blind Spot Assist, the C63 AMG Coupe provides a comprehensive level of driver support and protection. The assistance systems are familiar from the flagship S-Class and are based on the latest radar, camera and sensor technology to help monitor and prevent frequent accident causes such as driving too closely, fatigue and darkness.

The new telematics generation featuring enhanced ease of operation

The C63 AMG Coupe also features a new telematics generation which offers greater operating convenience, larger displays, phone book transfer, Bluetooth audio streaming and a USB interface now accommodated in the center armrest.

The optional COMAND system now features SIRIUS weather information along with the familiar destination search/route download via Google. The COMAND navigation system also includes a new 3D display with city views, the ability to record and retrace a specific route, specific personal destinations can be saved or imported via an SD card and four alternative routes can be displayed on the navigation map, one of them an economical variation.

The new C63 AMG Coupe will make its U.S. showroom debut in September 2011.

After a short leak earlier last week, the 2012 Mercedes-Benz C63 AMG is making its official world debut today with more attractive styling but the same 6.3L V8 engine from the previous model year.

That’s right, the 2012 Mercedes-Benz C63 AMG continues to be powered by a 6.3L V8 engine making 451-hp, which can be increased to 481-hp with the optional AMG Development Package. Mated to a AMG SPEEDSHIFT MCT 7-speed sports transmission from the SL63 AMG, the 2012 C63 AMG can go from 0-60 mph in just 4.4 seconds with a top speed of 155 mph. When mated to the AMG Development Package, the 0-60 mph acceleration time drops to 4.3 seconds and top speed is increased to 174 mph.

While you probably really don’t care about fuel-economy, Mercedes-Benz says that the optimized suspension and new steering system reduces fuel consumption.

Sales of the 2012 Mercedes-Benz C63 AMG will start in autumn.

Press Release:

C63 AMG features new design, enhanced technology

AMG SPEEDSHIFT MCT sports transmission increases efficiency

The high-performance Mercedes-Benz C63 AMG sedan is now more attractive than ever thanks to restyling for the 2012MY. The C63 AMG sedan is complemented by numerous enhancements help maximize performance while significantly reducing fuel consumption. The sedan now features the award-winning AMG SPEEDSHIFT MCT 7-speed sports transmission with standard “Controlled Efficiency” mode along with a new power steering pump that helps reduce the combined fuel consumption by about ten percent (estimated figured for U.S. models pending). The output of the AMG 6.3-liter V8 engine is unchanged at 451 hp and can be increased to a maximum of 481 hp with the optional AMG Development Package.

Agility, grip and ride comfort have been enhanced as a result of numerous measures to optimize the AMG sports suspension. New assistance systems and a new generation of telematics increase both safety and comfort. The U.S. market launch for the 2012 C63 AMG Sedan begins in autumn.

The 2012 C63 AMG sedan features a new radiator grille with a large Mercedes star and a single transverse louvre, as well as a new AMG front apron with a lower cross member painted in high-gloss black. Additionally highlights include special AMG daytime running lights and side air outlets which recall those found on the SL63 AMG high-performance roadster. New clear-lens headlamps emphasize the car’s distinctive, confident presence especially when equipped with the optional Lighting Package featuring bi-xenon headlamps. The wide front fenders with the “6.3 AMG” badge and the new 5 twin-spoke AMG light-alloy wheels — , finished in titanium grey. Good contact with the road is provided by the wide 235/40 R 18 and 255/35 R 18 tires at the front and rear.

The rear of the C63 AMG now features a new AMG rear apron featuring a distinctive, black diffuser insert with three pronounced fins.

AMG SPEEDSHIFT MCT 7-speed sports transmission from the SL63 AMG

Under the skin, the top C-Class model boasts a wealth of new technology including the AMG SPEEDSHIFT MCT 7-speed sports transmission – another advanced feature adopted from the SL63 AMG. This innovative transmission uses a wet start-up clutch in place of a traditional torque converter to deliver a much more efficient, agile and direct response. Fuel consumption and emissions have been reduced thanks to the “Controlled Efficiency” mode and a new power steering pump.

The AMG SPEEDSHIFT MCT 7-speed sports transmission impresses with its exceptional flexibility: with four driving modes as well as rev-matching and RACE START functions, it delivers comfortable shifts around town as well as instant response in high performance driving situations. The Controlled Efficiency “C” mode is programmed to provide smooth, comfortable upshifts while maintaining the lowest possible engine speed to help maximize fuel efficiency. The “S”, “S+” and “M” modes deliver increased agility through fast, responsive gear changes and higher revs. Gear changes in the “S+” and “M” modes take just 0.1 seconds.

The naturally aspirated eight-cylinder engine with its large displacement of 6,208 cc develops 451 hp at 6,500 rpm and attains a peak torque of 443 lb-ft. at 5,000 rpm. The 2012 C63 AMG retains its predecessor’s position as the top performing model in its segment with 0 to 60 acceleration in just 4.4 seconds while the top speed is 155 mph (electronically regulated).
AMG Development Package: technology transfer from the SLS AMG

Even more dramatic performance is available with the optional AMG Development Package offering 481 hp and a 0-60 mph acceleration time of 4.3 seconds. The Mercedes- AMG engine experts have achieved this increase in output thanks to a technology transfer from the SLS AMG with forged pistons, connecting rods and the lightweight crankshaft all coming from the gullwing model’s engine. The reduced mass inertia of the components – which are 6.6 pounds lighter than those of the standard version – allows the naturally aspirated eight-cylinder engine to rev up with even greater ease and agility.

Models equipped with the Development Package can be identified by the variable intake manifold painted in titanium grey under the hood, the AMG high-performance braking system with two-piece front discs and red painted brake calipers at all four corners, a carbon-fiber spoiler lip on the trunk lid and the AMG performance steering wheel in premium leather with a unique grip area.

Optimized suspension, new steering system reduces fuel consumption

The AMG sports suspension includes a redesigned front axle, reinforced rear axle and wider front and rear track has undergone thorough modification and offers greater driving enjoyment and ride comfort at all times. The new stiffer elastokinematics, revised axle kinematics with more negative camber and new rear-axle anti-roll bar with a larger cross-section, result in higher agility and greater lateral acceleration. Additionally, new spring and damper rates have optimized both the responsiveness of the suspension as well as the road noise and tire vibration characteristics.

The AMG speed-sensitive sports steering with a direct ratio (13.5 : 1) has a redesigned power-steering pump which contributes to reduced fuel consumption. This new pump only requires energy when the driver is actually making steering movements. Reliable deceleration at all times is provided by the AMG highperformance braking system with internally ventilated and perforated discs all around.

High Quality Interior

Even a quick glance at the interior of the 2012 C63 AMG sedan reveals the considerable updates, such as the completely new dashboard design with an integrated screen. The new 3D color TFT display in the middle of the redesigned speedometer welcomes the driver upon entry with the AMG logo. The new threespoke AMG performance steering wheel – a feature adopted from the CLS63 AMG – is trimmed in premium leather and features metallic trim elements with a flattened top and bottom sections as well as grip areas which are specially shaped and trimmed in perforated leather for perfect steering control. Aluminum shift paddles facilitate manual gear changes.

Fine trim elements in brushed dark aluminum are found on the dashboard and doors. Situated in the center console surrounded by high-gloss black piano lacquer trim is the new rotary control for selecting the transmission modes C, S, S+, M and RACE START. The special AMG sports seats with integrated head restraints and adaptive backrests are available from launch with combined M-B Tex/DINAMICA black upholstery. (DINAMICA is a new type of breathable manmade fiber). The side bolsters of the AMG sports seats are covered in M-B Tex while the center panels of the seat cushions are also upholstered with DINAMICA.

Available as an option, designo leather appointments give the interior of the C63 AMG a very exclusive character: four single colors and three two-tone combinations are available. As a further option, these can be complemented with “extended black designo leather appointments” for the top section of the dashboard and the upper section of the door linings.

Five new driver assistance systems already established in the S-Class and CLS

The 2012 C63 AMG features five new driver assistance systems which are already established in the S-Class flagship model line and the trend-setting CLS. These assistance systems use the latest camera and sensor technology and are designed to combat common causes of accidents. They raise the safety of the C-Class to a new level by warning the driver of a hazard.

Adaptive Highbeam Assist

ATTENTION ASSIST
PARKTRONIC including parking guidance
Lane Keeping Assist
Blind Spot Assist
New generation of telematics

The C-Class sees the debut of a new telematics generation which will gradually be introduced in other model series. Major new features include greater operating convenience, larger displays, telephone directory transfer via Bluetooth®, wireless music streaming and a USB interface in the center console.

The navigation system of COMAND Online also has added functions including a 3D display with virtual city views, eco-routes and the ability to add waypoints along your journey.
C63 AMG – fast-track to best-seller status

Launched in the U.S. in April 2008, the Mercedes-Benz C63 AMG rapidly established itself within the performance sedan segment. Over the past three and a half years more than 17,000 AMG enthusiasts world-wide have purchased the C63 AMG. The AMG Development Package has proven especially popular, with over 30 percent of all the C63 AMG models delivered in 2010 featuring this attractive option.

Mercedes’ AMG line will use hybrid technology in the future to improve fuel consumption, at the sake of performance. The next generation of Mercedes’ high performance label will implement hybrid technology including stop-start and energy recuperation mechanisms.

Back in 2008, then CEO of AMG Volker Mornhinweg said that the company was experimenting with batteries and other electric devices with an eye toward boosting power. That is not the case now however, as the technology will primarily be used to improve fuel-economy and lower CO2 emissions.

“In the future AMG will still offer high performance models but there will be hybrids there,” Daimler’s head of future mobility and advanced engineering, Herbert Kohler said. “AMG needs to reduce fuel consumption.”

Another consideration regarding the implementation of electronics to boost efficiency is a device similar to the ‘range-extender’ used in the Chevy Volt.

While most of the auto industry moves to downsize vehicle size and the engines that power them. A group of trainees at Mercedes-Benz went against the trend and decided to fit a V8 engine into a rear-wheel-drive B-Class. Known as the Mercedes-Benz B55, the model is powered by a 5.5L V8 engine making 388-hp and 391 lb-ft of torque. All that power is sent to the rear-wheels through a 7-speed automatic transmission and the engine control unit. Stopping power comes from the C32 AMG’s ventilated disc brakes in size 345 x 34 mm at the front and 300 x 30 mm at the rear.

How about some performance numbers? Nothing certain yet, but according to Andreas Wurz, who headed the project, the B55 should “manage a sprint to 100 km/h (62 mph) in under six seconds.”

We’re just glad to see someone out there doing something crazy like this.

Press Release:

Trainees build a very special B-Class

Fulminating one-off: B 55 with a V8 engine and 388 hp

Complete conversion in the training workshop

Spacious, innovative and safe, the compact models of the Mercedes A and B-Class score with their high practicality, and have found favour with more than 2.5 million customers as a result. An extraordinary one-off example has now been built at the Rastatt plant, and shows the B-Class in a completely new light: a B 55 with a V8 engine and rear-wheel drive.

The idea came from the Rastatt plant manager, Peter Wesp. He gave some of his staff the task of creating a very special vehicle on the basis of the B-Class – leaving it to their creativity to decide what and how. Andreas Würz, a foreman in the technical vocational training department, immediately took up the challenge. He took a very close look at this large compact model, enlisted the aid of a tape-measure and came up with an idea that not only surprised and delighted his boss and colleagues, but also the trainees: “Actually it should be possible to fit a V8 into the engine compartment.”Together with his fellow-foreman Matthias Rieger from the electrics/electronics installation section, he assembled a team of twelve second-year and third-year trainees specialising in production mechanics and automotive mechatronics.
A book of specifications was drawn up:

* The spatial concept of the B-Class was to remain unchanged.
* On the outside too, there were only to be minor indications of the
conversion work.
* The interior was to be upgraded in line with the new vehicle class
being aspired to.
* And the result of the conversion was to be in large measure suitable
for day-to-day driving.

HR manager Martin Spicale promised financial support, which made the project
a feasible proposition in the first place. And a “victim” (Würz) for the conversion was also soon found: a B 200 CDI which had anyway been delegated to the training workshop for learning purposes. While the trainees completely disassembled the car, Würz went in search of a suitable engine and found what he was looking for. And no mistake: the 5.5-litre V8 developing 285 kW (388 hp) and 530 newton metres of torque was transplanted into the B-Class together with a seven-speed automatic transmission and the engine control unit. The latter proved to be quite a headache later on, as it had to be reprogrammed only to process signals from the driven rear axle.

Würz: “The V8 power unit fitted amazingly well, and we were even able to use the original engine mounts.” There were serious problems with the steering, but here too, harmony was restored with a number of modifications. The exhaust system was a clever combination of various replacement part items, and took the form of a twin-pipe system emerging at the centre of the rear end. This is where the one-off, christened the B 55 gets its typical, burbling sound – once the ignition key has been turned, all heads in the vicinity are guaranteed to swivel simultaneously in the direction of the B-Class.

Intensive perusal of parts catalogues also solved the second major transplantation problem, namely the drive axle at the rear. It emerged that the rear axle of an older W 210 series E-Class would be a very good geometrical fit. Plant manager Wesp gave the go-ahead to obtain one, and Würz and his colleagues designed a subframe, which extensive forming and welding work allowed to be integrated into the B-Class bodyshell to receive the new rear axle. Elegantly concealed within the sandwich floor, the propshaft of the E-Class also fitted into the B-Class with no further modifications.

For the brakes the team also struck gold in the replacement parts catalogue, this time in the C32 AMG listing. Perforated and internally ventilated disc brakes in size 345 x 34 mm were implanted at the front, with perforated and internally ventilated disc brakes in size 300 x 30 mm at the rear. The system was combined with striking 8.5 x 18 AMG sports wheels in a five-spoke design shod with 235/40 ZR 18 Y tyres at the front and 9 x 18 wheels with 255/35 ZR 18 Y tyres at the rear. The maximum steering angle at the front axle was limited to suit. The team had recourse to a typical item from the tuner’s toolbox for the suspension, installing a coil-over suspension by K&W.

Where the interior was concerned, friends from the training workshop in Sindelfingen were able to help, providing Alcantara linings for the A, B and C-pillars as well as a roof liner in the same, luxurious material. The seats in a leather/Alcantara combination were provided by the specialists at Johnson Controls, who are located on-site in Rastatt. The finishing touches were added to the B 55 in the paint shop of the Rastatt plant. In trendy white with dark-painted radiator louvres and smoked headlamp lenses, the B-Class cuts an imposing figure but only gives a discreet indication of the powerpack concealed beneath its bonnet.

The project team headed by foreman Würz are particularly proud that at 1620 kg, the weight of the B 55 is only around 180 kg greater than that of the original car. Which means that impressive performance figures can be expected. Würz: “We have not made any measurements yet, but we should manage a sprint to 100 km/h in under six seconds.”Plant manager Wesp is equally proud of the result: “The team of trainees has done a superb job, and placed a spotlight on the sporty genes of the B-Class that nobody could have imagined.” Training manageress Manuela Rascher is likewise very pleased: “The B 55 shows what our training workshop can do.

And at the same time it clearly demonstrates that we not only offer young people high-quality professional training, but also highly unusual and exciting project work.” Could it be that further projects of this nature are planned for the future?

Rascher: “We may have some surprises in store…”

Infiniti Performance Line (IPL) – when Infiniti announced the introduction of the program we were pretty excited to see some high-performance vehicles. “More than just focusing on engine power and acceleration, IPL redefines total vehicle performance with unique driving attributes and exclusive exterior and interior features,” Infiniti said in a statement.

So far, the only IPL vehicle making it to the market will be the 2011 IPL G Coupe (a convertible will follow), which will be powered by an IPL-tuned 3.7L DOHC 24-valve VQ37HR V6 making 348-hp – an increase of 18-hp over the non-IPL models – and a peak torque of 276 lb-ft of torque. Not that impressive right?

Well, according to AutoCar, future Infiniti IPL models could carry a “Powered by AMG” badge as a part of Renault/Nissan’s recent tie-up with Daimler. One Mercedes-Benz AMG engine planned for Infiniti’s G range is a turbocharged 3.5L V6 unit making around 400-hp. Another possibility is an IPL version of the ‘M’ sedan, which could be powered by AMG’s 6.2L V8 unit.

Will it happen? We’ll take it with a grain of salt for now.

According to sources, the partnership could end up in AMG taking over Ducati.

AMG is unlikely to make any move for a couple of years, while the tie-up “takes its first baby steps”, said one senior source. On an official note, AMG and Ducati said that they are “currently examining further activities and strategic steps they might undertake together in the near future”.

Recently, automakers like Mini, Smart, Nissan and BMW have moved towards offering two-wheelers and scooters. The move is being seeing as a way to capture the younger market.

Mercedes-Benz’s AMG unit and famed motorcycle manufacturer Ducati, have entered into an agreement by which the two will work closely together in the future. First and foremost, will be joint marketing and sponsoring of activities.

“I am very pleased that we are able to announce our strategic cooperation with Ducati today. AMG and Ducati ideally complement each other, as both companies share the same values: racing as the driving passion, and high performance plus exclusivity as the central brand messages of both AMG and Ducati. This long-term cooperation will help us to jointly access new customer groups,” said Ola Kallenius, CEO of Mercedes-AMG GmbH.

Other cross promotional activities include making available at AMG events Ducati motorcycles, and AMG vehicles to Ducati customers. The two companies plan on a long-term cooperation, and are examining how to further it.

“I am especially proud to have AMG as one of our sponsors for the MotoGP Team. I am also very pleased that our joint marketing activities are well under way. In AMG we have found a partner who perfectly reflects our brand values of high performance, motorsport, excitement and our sense of unmistakable style and design,” said Gabriele del Torchio, President and CEO of Ducati Motor Holding S.p.A.

Press Release:

2012 CLS63 AMG ““ benchmark in design

LOS ANGELES ““ Stunning design, superior performance and groundbreaking efficiency ““ that is the all-new 2012 Mercedes-Benz CLS63 AMG. The four-door coupe features the all-new AMG V8 biturbo engine generating an output of up to 550 hp and 590 lb-ft of torque, as well as the AMG SPEEDSHIFT MCT 7-speed Sports Transmission. Fuel economy of 16 mpg city and 21 mpg highway (esti- mated figures) represents an improvement of up to 33 percent compared with the preceding model. The 2012 CLS63 AMG goes on sale in the US in the sum- mer of 2011.

The combination of AMG Adaptive Suspension with the adaptive damping system and a new front axle arrangement, plus new electro-hydraulic AMG sports steering delivers supreme handling and dynamics. From a visual standpoint, the 2012 CLS63 AMG cuts an impressive figure with its athletic stance and distinctive exterior and interior design. The brand new active LED high-performance headlights are available as an option, with LED Daytime Running Lamps fitted as standard.

As with the S63 AMG and CL63 AMG, drivers of the CLS63 AMG benefit from the new eight-cylinder motor known internally as the M 157. The new AMG 5.5-liter V8 biturbo engine features a combination of high-tech components ““ in addition to spray-guided gasoline direct injection with piezo injectors, it boasts an all-aluminum crank- case, four-valve technology with variable camshafts, air-water charge-air cooling, generator management and stop/start system. From 5,461 cm3, the eight-cylinder generates a maximum output of 518 hp and 516 lb-ft of torque. In combination with the optional AMG Performance Package, output rises to 550 hp and 590 lb-ft. Both versions of the CLS63 AMG deliver exceptional performance ““ acceleration from 0 to 60 mph takes 4.4 and 4.3 seconds respectively, with a top speed of 155 mph in the standard version and 186 mph with the Performance Package (electronically limited. All figures are preliminary).

The key difference between the two performance levels is the maximum charge pres- sure of the twin turbochargers, which is 14.5 psi in the standard CLS63 AMG and 18.8 psi with the Performance Package. Moreover, the version with the Performance Package boasts an attractive engine cover with carbon-fiber applications.

Quantum leap ““ 33 percent improved fuel economy
Despite a substantial increase in output compared with the preceding model with the AMG 6.3-liter V8 naturally aspirated engine producing 507 hp and 465 lb-ft, the new CLS63 AMG goes 4 miles further in the city on one gallon of fuel, making it 33 per- cent more fuel-efficient ““ no less than a quantum leap. With estimated fuel economy of 16 mpg city and 21 mpg highway, the new AMG V8 coupe is not only considerably better than all of its direct competitors in the exclusive segment of high-performance four-door coupes, it is also more fuel-efficient than many far less potent vehicles. Both performance variants have identical fuel economy.

Overview of key data
All figures are preliminary; * with AMG Performance Package; ** electronically limited
Exclusive – AMG SPEEDSHIFT MCT 7-speed Sport Transmission
A significant proportion of the unparalleled fuel economy is due to the Mercedes- AMG exclusive AMG SPEEDSHIFT MCT 7-speed Sport Transmission. In contrast to a conventional automatic gearbox, the MCT transmission operates without a torque converter, using instead a compact, wet start-up clutch. The stop/start function is standard equipment and is constantly active in the Controlled Efficiency (“C”) trans- mission program, switching off the eight-cylinder when the vehicle is at a standstill. The Controlled Efficiency setting also provides smoother transmission mapping, delivering comfortable and early shifting, starting from rest in second gear. A green “ECO” symbol on the AMG dash indicates to the driver that the stop/start function is active.

The “S” (Sport), “S+” (Sport Plus) and “M” (Manual) programs offer a more agile en- gine and transmission setup, while the stop/start function is deactivated. In the “M”, “S” and “S+” modes, the engine management partially suppresses the cylinders ““ by interrupting ignition and injection for a very short and precisely defined period un- der full load, it makes shift times faster than ever. One highly appealing side effect of this exceptionally quick process is a stunningly emotional sound. Automatic rev- matching and the RACE START function round out the comprehensive list of standard equipment.

Independent AMG Adaptive Suspension
The suspension, steering and braking system on the new CLS63 AMG are perfectly matched to the high-tech driveline. The AMG Adaptive Suspension with steel struts at the front and air suspension at the rear, as well as automatic ride-height control, is fur- ther refined with an electronic damping system. Depending on the situation, it auto- matically varies the damping characteristics and reduces body roll. The outcome is an incredibly fast correlation between optimum comfort and best-possible agility. The driver can switch between the three suspension settings “Comfort”, “Sport” and “Sport plus” at the touch of a button.

The independent front axle setup has a 0.94 inch wider track and is paired perfectly with the electro-hydraulic AMG sports steering. Not only does the level of power as- sistance vary in accordance with the suspension mode, it also delivers an improve- ment in fuel economy because it draws energy only when the steering is actually in use. The 3-stage ESP® offers individual settings ““ and thus a distinct plus for driving fun with no restriction in safety.

AMG high-performance braking system
The AMG high-performance braking system provides perfect stopping power even under extreme driving conditions with 14.2-inch internally ventilated and cross- drilled brake discs at all four corners. The front axle features highly resilient, mo- torsport-tested composite technology. Contact with the road is maintained with tita- nium gray painted and polished AMG 19-inch triple 5-spoke alloy wheels clad in 255/35 R19 tires (front) and 285/30 R19 (rear).

Intelligent lightweight design ““ major contribution to efficiency
When it comes to its bodyshell, the 2012 CLS63 AMG is nothing less than an engineer- ing work of art ““ intelligent lightweight design plays a major role in overcoming the classic conflict between low weight and high stiffness. Like the SLS AMG, the CLS63 AMG also features all-aluminum doors. They are made using deep-drawn aluminum sheet and extruded profile, and are around 24 percent lighter overall than conventional steel doors. Also made from aluminum are the hood, front fenders, rear parcel shelf, several beam profiles and a large number of chassis and engine components.

Progress through light ““ active LED high-performance headlamps
The CLS-Class is the first model line in the world to feature active LED high- performance headlamps that combine the amazing daylight-like color of LED technol- ogy with the performance, functionality and energy efficiency of today’s bi-xenon headlights. The new full-LED light system is available as an option in the U.S. and for the first time offers the advanced lighting technology already proven in Mercedes models with bi-xenon headlamps. The headlamps, with their total of 71 LEDs, under- score the distinctive presence of the CLS63 AMG. Mercedes-Benz light specialists were able to combine LED technology with the optional Adaptive Highbeam Assist for the first time, leading to an all-new level of nighttime safety.

Contrary to the first vehicles with LED headlamps, there are now absolutely no re- strictions to the functionality and performance of this light technology. The case for the new LED technology is strengthened further by factors such as ““ the average life- cycle of an LED being 10,000 hours, which is around five times more than a xenon lamp; and the color of LED driving lights being the closest to daylight. This means that LED light is a good match for the normal operating range of the human eye. Studies show that artificial light puts less strain on the eye the closer it is to the color of daylight. With a color temperature of 5,500 Kelvin, LED light is closer to daylight (6,500 K) than xenon light (4,200 K). Fitted as standard are the characteristic AMG- specific LED Daytime Running Lights, which feature two light bars integrated into the AMG front skirt.

Exterior design inspired by SLS AMG
From the front, the new CLS63 AMG is evocative of the SLS AMG ““ the radiator grille in particular, with the large Mercedes star and the wing-shaped louvers, draws its in- spiration from the AMG super sports car. The CLS63 AMG is differentiated from the other CLS variants by a unique hood, wider fenders featuring the “V8 BITURBO” logo and an exclusive AMG front skirt with a black-painted cross-brace. Distinguishing fea- tures on the rear end include the diffuser insert, the AMG spoiler on the trunk lid, the AMG sports exhaust with two chromed dual tailpipes, as well as the integrated fog lamps also familiar from the SLS AMG. The AMG styling harmonizes perfectly with the classic CLS silhouette, identifiable largely by its elegantly taut proportions, the “drop- ping line” along the side and the sporty shoulder muscles spanning the rear axle.

Exclusive interior ambience
This philosophy is also carried into the interior. All AMG-specific styling and equip- ment features are a perfect match for the new design of the CLS interior. The wrap-around effect in the cockpit, with the high line flowing in a single sweep from the driver door across the dashboard to the passenger door is flanked by generously pro- portioned and finely detailed trim ““ in the case of the AMG flagship model, this comes as standard in burl walnut wood veneer. Piano black lacquer and carbon-fiber trim elements are available as options. Material quality and workmanship is of the highest order and provide a highly exclusive ambience. The extensive range of stan- dard equipment includes AMG sports seats in premium leather, a new AMG three- spoke performance steering wheel with aluminum shift paddles and a flattened rim top and bottom and the AMG DRIVE UNIT with compact E-SELECT shift lever.

New driver assistance systems ““ more safety
More than a dozen driver assistance systems in the new CLS work together to avoid ac- cidents and mitigate their consequences. New systems include Active Blind Spot Assist and Active Lane Keeping Assist (both part of the Driver Assistance Package).

Active Blind Spot Assist warns the driver when, using close-range radar sensors, it de- tects the threat of a collision during a lane change maneuver. If the driver ignores the warning and comes dangerously close to the vehicle in the neighboring lane, Active Blind Spot Assist steps in. By initiating a brief braking impulse, controlled by ESP®, on the rear wheel on the other side of the vehicle, it causes a yawing motion that counter- acts the collision course.

Networked with ESP® for the first time is Active Lane Keeping Assist. The system is activated when the driver involuntarily drives over continuous lane markings right or left. In such cases, Active Lane Keeping Assist applies the brakes on the opposing rear wheel in order to prevent the vehicle from crossing the line. At the same time, a display in the dashboard issues a warning to the driver. Should the vehicle cross bro- ken lane markings, the system issues an electrically generated impulse via the steer- ing wheel. This creates a short vibration, providing a subtle but highly effective cue to counter-steer immediately. This tactile warning via steering wheel vibration always occurs prior to any braking input.

AMG Performance Package adds more power
One highlight of the highly attractive optional equipment list is the AMG Perform- ance Package for the CLS63 AMG incorporating the following:
Increase in power output of 32 hp (total 550 hp) and maximum torque of 74 lb-ft (total 590 lb-ft)
AMG engine cover in genuine carbon-fiber
Rear spoiler in genuine carbon-fiber
Sport suspension
Red brake calipers
Top speed increased to 186 mph
AMG Performance Steering Wheel with Alcantara® applications around the grip zones

“Launch Edition” ““ something very special
One very special offering is the exclusive CLS63 AMG “Launch Edition”. Painted in the new shade of matte Manganit Gray Magno, the “Launch Edition” is a stunning composition of top-quality interior detailing ““ on opening the door, the AMG sports seats are an immediate eye-catcher, designo leather in “Corteccia Pearl” delivers a mesmerizing shimmering metallic surface finish. Interior roof liner, A, B and C pil- lars and sun visors are all upholstered in anthracite Alcantara®. AMG trim elements in carbon-fiber/piano black lacquer create a functional ambience, while designo floor mats in black velour with the design badge and designo leather edging in “Corteccia Pearl” correspond perfectly with the designo leather seats.
U.S. market launch of the 2012 CLS63 AMG is scheduled for summer 2011.

Press Release:

RENNtech C74 Konzept

As the worlds foremost Mercedes-Benz/AMG tuner, RENNtech unveiled their latest project vehicle at the 2010 Festival’s of Speed in Orlando, Florida. All performance modifications and exterior aerodynamic modifications were designed, developed, and tested in house at RENNtech’s facility located in Lake Park, Florida.

The C74 is the latest variation of RENNtech’s C63 AMG project vehicle which has seen continual transformations throughout its life, serving as a working test platform for RENNtech’s proprietary line of performance products. The C74′s current trim boasts incredible performance from the 6.2L AMG V-8 with a wide stance and aggressive look to match. The “74″ designation given by RENNtech, refers to the 74 inch width of the rear wheel track which lies beneath the body work of the C74′s muscular rear end. This allows the ability to run up to an 11″ wide rear wheel with a 315 series rear tire for the ultimate in handling and traction. The number also pays homage to the legendary RENNtech V12 “SL 74″.

This package is available now starting at $11,950. For more information regarding our C74 package and additional pricing options, visit our news blog:

Lexus isn’t the only one showing off a special customized version of its vehicles at the 2010 Australian International Motor Show. Mercedes-Benz Australia commissioned to exclusive vehicles for the show based on the C 63 AMG and the new SLS AMG.

“Australia is one of our favorite markets,” said Mario Spitzner, Director Branding, Marketing & Sales Mercedes-AMG. “We were asked to create two unique AMG vehicles for the Australian International Motor Show. I hope you enjoy them as much as we did building them,” said Spitzner.

The first vehicle, based on the C 63 AMG, is known as the Concept 358. The model is painted in designo Pearl Orange paint from the AMG factory in Affalterbach, and gets AMG’s Performance Package Plus which lifts power to a staggering 480-hp. The package also gets 19-inch multi spoke alloy wheels in black, KEYLESS-GO and extended designo leather appointments inside.

The special Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG is the only version of the supercar in the world to be painted in designo magno Night Black (matte-paint) along with the red touches both inside and out.
