Mercedes-Benz has unveiled the new E 63 AMG Estate at the 2009 Frankfurt Motor Show; unfortunately we missed out on it. Nonetheless, we have all the details and high-res images for you right here.

Power comes the same 6.3L V8 that powers that E 63 AMG sedan. Mated to a AMG SPEEDSHIFT MCT 7-speed sports transmission, the E 63 AMG Estate makes 525-hp with a maximum torque of 465 lb-ft. That gets your kids to soccer practice and back in 0 to 62 mph in just 4.6 seconds with a top speed of 155 mph.

Like the sedan, The AMG SPEEDSHIFT MCT 7-speed sports transmission offers driver’s four drive modes: “C” (Controlled Efficiency), “S” (Sport), “S+” (Sport plus) and “M” (Manual).

Sales of the 2010 Mercedes-Benz E 63 AMG Estate will start later this year.

Press Release:

The new Mercedes-Benz E 63 AMG Estate: High-performance estate with dream data

Affalterbach – Pole position for the new E 63 AMG Estate: the high-performance estate develops 386 kW/525 hp, accelerates from 0 to 100 km/h in 4.6 seconds, offers a maximum luggage compartment capacity of 1950 litres – all with a relatively low fuel consumption of 12.8 litres per 100 km (combined, provisional figures). With these dream figures, the new E 63 AMG Estate adds up to an extraordinary combination of driving dynamics, high utility value and superb efficiency.

The top-of-the-line E-Class not only features its distinctive styling but also the all-new AMG RIDE CONTROL sports suspension including electronically controlled damping system and a new front axle. A composite ceramic braking system is available for the first time for the E 63 AMG Estate. The unrivalled combination of groundbreaking driver assistance systems raises the bar in terms of active and passive safety in this vehicle class.

Largest luggage compartment and lowest fuel consumption – the E 63 AMGEstate sets new standards. With a luggage compartment capacity of 695 to 1950 litres and fuel consumption of 12.8 litres Super Plus per 100 kilometres (NEDC combined), the new high-performance estate from AMGstands on pole position. None of its rivals can match this extraordinary combination of performance, utility value and efficiency. The AMG 6.3-litre V8 engine with its 386 kW/525 hp develops 8 kW/11 hp more than the previous model, yet betters its fuel consumption figures by almost twelve percent.

This improvement was achieved thanks to a whole raft of efficiency-enhancing measures. The on-demand delivery of fuel and generator management with recuperation of braking energy on the overrun has helped reduce fuel consumption, just like the AMG SPEEDSHIFT MCT 7-speed sports transmission: a wet start-up clutch that runs in an oil bath replaces the conventional torque converter, while the even more fuel-efficient driving mode “Controlled Efficiency” utilises early upshifts to keep engine speeds as low as possible.

The new E 63 AMGEstate delivers a compelling proposition with its two fundamentally opposed traits: it masters the sedate driving of an executive estate suitable for long journeys just as consummately as the enormously dynamic manoeuvres on the racetrack. The AMG high-revving, naturally aspirated engine with a displacement of 6208 cc and 630 Nm of torque impresses with its agile responsiveness, muscular power delivery and great flexibility. The E 63 AMG Estate reaches 100 km/h in just 4.6 seconds, with a top speed of 250 km/h (electronically limited). The newly composed V8 sound is a thrilling accompaniment for mile after mile, while the smooth-running engine guarantees typical Mercedes ride comfort. A newly designed water cooling system ensures maximum endurance even under enormous stresses.

The AMG SPEEDSHIFT MCT 7-speed sports transmission meets the driver’s most disparate requirements: the transmission is equipped with four drive modes: “C” (Controlled Efficiency), “S” (Sport), “S+” (Sport plus) and “M” (Manual), which can be selected using a rotary electronic switch in the AMG DRIVE UNIT. In the even more fuel-efficient drive mode Controlled Efficiency, the transmission shifts the gears decidedly smoothly, and the transmission control unit is programmed to perform early upshifts to keep engine speeds as low as possible.

In Sport plus and Manual modes, the 7-speed sports transmission allows gearshifts to be performed in 100 milliseconds. Partial suppression of individual cylinders by interrupting ignition and injection briefly during gearshifts under full load leads to considerably faster shift times. Fast, spontaneous multiple downshifts ensure first-class agility in conjunction with the double-declutching and RACE START function: this enables the E 63 AMG driver to call on the maximum acceleration potential automatically.

Driving dynamics and ride comfort – the E 63 AMG Estate delivers on both counts

Like the engine and power transfer, the newly developed AMG RIDE CONTROL sports suspension offers the ultimate in individuality. Outstanding driving dynamics and typical Mercedes long-distance comfort go together as an optimum synthesis in the E 63 AMG Estate. While new steel spring struts are used on the front axle, the rear suspension features AMG-specific air springs. The advantage of this solution is that the front steel springs ensure more sensitive responses while the rear air struts with their automatic level control system keep the vehicle at a constant height irrespective of the load.

A new, electronically controlled damping system automatically varies the damping characteristics according to the driving situation, reducing the roll angle of the body. The result is instant modification to provide the best possible ride comfort together with the greatest possible agility. In addition the driver is able to choose between the three suspension modes of Comfort, Sport and Sport plus at the touch of a button. The E 63 AMGEstate is also equipped with a newly developed, dedicated front axle with a 56-millimetre wider track, a tubular stabiliser, new control arms, new elastokinematics and new hub carriers for more negative camber – thereby providing more grip when taking bends at speed. This is a highly sophisticated axle design whose principle has already proved its worth in the C 63 AMG Estate. The rear axle likewise has more negative camber, optimised elastokine-matics and a new subframe mounting for greater stability at the physical limits.

Newly developed power steering and individual 3-stage ESP®

A more direct steering feel comes courtesy of the all-new speed-sensitive rack-and-pinion steering. The steering ratio of 14 : 1 is 22 percent more direct than in the standard production models, while a more rigid steering column plus the reconfigured characteristic mapping of the speed-sensitive servo assistance ensure better steering precision and improved road contact.

The 3-stage ESP® familiar from the SL 63 AMG and C 63 AMG enables individual settings to be selected – with clear benefits in terms of driving pleasure. The ESP® button in the AMG DRIVE UNIT allows the driver to choose between “ESP ON”, “ESP SPORT” and “ESP OFF” – with the currently active mode shown in the central display of the instrument cluster. Perfect deceleration even when driving extremely briskly is ensured by the AMGhigh-performance braking system with 360-millimetre, internally ventilated and perforated brake discs all-round. Particularly resistant, motorsports-tested composite technology is used at the front axle. The newly developed, optional ceramic composite brakes with larger brake discs guarantee even better brake performance and a longer service life. The ceramic brake discs will perform reliably at even higher operating temperatures thanks to their greater hardness, all combined with an impressive weight reduction of around 40 percent. The reduced unsprung masses translate into even more agile handling, particularly on fast motorway bends.

Optimum grip is ensured by the 18-inch, titanium grey, high-sheen AMG five-spoke light-alloy wheels with a width of nine and 9.5 inches and mixed tyre sizes of 255/40 R 18 at the front and 285/35 R 18 at the rear. Lightweight, forged 19‑inch AMG light-alloy wheels with size 255/35 R 19 tyres at the front and 285/30 R 19 at the rear are also available as an option.

AMG bodystyling and wider front wings

The newly developed front axle with its wider track calls for wings that are 17 mm wider. The stylish integrated “6.3 AMG” lettering leaves the connoisseur in no doubt about the unique credentials of the high-performance estate. The AMG bodystyling also includes a front apron with large cooling air intakes, air outlets at the side and the AMG-specific LED daytime driving lights. In conjunction with the optional Intelligent Light System (ILS), the E 63 AMG Estate is equipped with tinted main headlamps. The side skirts and the rear apron with its black insert also guarantee the car’s striking looks. Both styling features combine effortlessly with the graceful line that follows the rear wheel arches and lends a clear shape to the imposing, muscular contours of the rear wings. The standard specification includes ultra-fast LED tail lights and direction indicators. To create a lasting impression – on the eye and the ear – the sports exhaust system has two newly designed, chrome-plated twin tailpipes.

Luggage compartment with the largest capacity and great practicality

Thanks to the wheelbase that has been enlarged by 20 millimetres, the E 63 AMGEstate not only offers better ride comfort but also more space and luggage compartment capacity than the previous model. With its capacity of 695 to 1950 litres, the luggage compartment is not only larger than before but also leaves the competition standing when it comes to the essential luggage compartment dimensions and capacity. This highly practical concept paves the way for numerous options for transporting sports equipment, holiday luggage or high-quality designer furniture.

Standard equipment for the E 63 AMG Estate includes the main components of the EASY-PACK system such as the folding load compartment floor with two loading levels and collapsible crate, the load compartment cover, quickfold to fold down the 1/3:2/3-split rear backrest easily and the EASY-PACK tailgate, which can be opened and closed electrically.

Interior with sporty feel-good atmosphere

The newly designed interior of the high-performance estate is an exciting blend of high-grade materials and functional sportiness. Exclusive features include the dedicated, electrically adjustable sports seats with improved lateral support and the sports steering wheel in a four-spoke design with aluminium shift paddles. The AMG DRIVE UNIT provides adjustments for the MCT sports transmission, the 3-stage ESP®, the suspension set-up and the AMG drive modes. The E-SELECT selector lever in the centre console is a completely new feature for the DRIVE UNIT. The driver can shift directly between R, N and D simply by nudging the lever, all thanks to drive-by-wire; the parking lock P can be selected conveniently by pressing a button. Standard equipment also includes high-grade leather upholstery in three different colours, the AMG instrument cluster with an AMG main menu as well as the door entry sills with AMG lettering and a sports pedal cluster – both in brushed stainless steel.

Optional extras from the AMG Performance Studio are also available ex factory:

According to sources at AMG, the next-generation Black Series super-coupe will be based on the new 2010 Mercedes-Benz E-Class Coupe; however, there will be little concentration on increasing the output on one of the most powerful Mercedes-Benz models on the roads.

Insiders say that AMG engineers will focus their attention more on weight-saving techniques and tuning the mechanicals of the car. There will be a great emphasis on improving the model’s agility and handling rather than speed and horsepower.

As for the C-Class, there will be no Black Series version of the model since the limited AMG branding is only for two-door models. Nonetheless, the C 63 AMG will get more power in the future.

“For this performance version you can count on more than 500bhp but less than 525bhp,” said an AMG engineer.

All fees include a dinner reception and introductory briefing the evening before the program, track hospitality, AMG Driving Academy certificate of program completion and an AMG gift bag.
Press Release:

AMG Sports package for the 2009 S-Class and the CL-Class – Top Mercedes-Benz models featuring even more striking sportiness

For the first time, there is an AMG Sports package for the 2009 Mercedes-Benz

S-Class and the CL-Class. With revamped AMG bodystyling, attractive 19-inch AMG light-alloy wheels and special interior details, both top Mercedes-Benz models can now be made more striking than ever in terms of sportiness. The appealing combination of exclusive equipment features, many of which are not available separately, is proving increasingly popular with customers. The AMG Sports package is now available for five Mercedes model types.

New AMG bodystyling, including a front apron with large air intakes, enhances the visual impact of the S-Class and the CL-Class. The rear apron with a striking black insert and integrated, rectangular tailpipe trim in polished stainless steel is also eye-catching. AMG side sill panels round off the AMG bodystyling. 19-inch AMG light-alloy wheels with a five-spoke design and wide-base 255/40 (front) and 275/40 (rear) tyres fill the wheel arches perfectly and provide optimum contact with the road. 20-inch AMG light-alloy wheels are available as an option in a twin-spoke design with 255/35 and 275/35 tyres. Mounted on the front axle there are perforated brake discs and silver-painted brake callipers featuring Mercedes-Benz lettering; the V6 models have a more generously proportioned braking system.

Wood trim and the wood/leather steering wheel in black ash give the high-quality vehicle interior a dynamic feel. The AMG Sports package also includes velour floor mats with AMG lettering and sports pedals in brushed stainless steel with rubber studs.

The AMG Sports package is available for all S-Class models with a short or long wheelbase, as well as for the CL 500 and CL 500 4MATIC. It costs between 5831 and 7973 euros (including 19% VAT); the market launch commences in June 2009. In addition to the S-Class and CL-Class, the new E-Class Saloon, the new E-Class Coupé and the C-Class can be equipped with the AMG Sports package.

According to a report by AutoCar, Mercedes-Benz has no plans to produce a successor to the CLK63 AMG. Since the CLK was replaced by the E-Class Coupe, Mercedes-Benz is having problems fitting an AMG version of the 2010 model in its lineup.

“We had a good look where it would fit into the line-up and eventually came to the conclusion it would be too close to the CLS63 AMG, both in positioning and price,” an insider told Autocar.

Using the C-Class underpinnings for the 2010 E-Class, the E-Class has basically jumped up in class. The insider said that a successor to the CLS63 AMG is in the works.

Since Mercedes-Benz has no plans to offer an E-Class Coupe AMG, the future for the CLK AMG Black Series also remains vague. A convertible and wagon version of the E-Class Coupe will debut at the 2009 Frankfurt Motor Show in Sept.

If you’ve been flipping through all the car sites in your RSS reader, you’ve probably noticed many European publications posting all the images and details on the new 2010 Mercedes-Benz E63 AMG. Yeah – that’s called an embargo leak. So without further ado – we now present the 2010 Mercedes-Benz E63 AMG prior to its New York Auto Show debut next week.

Completely redesigned and based on the 2010 Mercedes-Benz E-Class, the new E63 AMG is more aggressive than ever before with improved performance, handling and advanced technology inspired by its sibling – the Mercedes-Benz SL63 AMG.

So let’s get down to what you all really want to know. Power comes from AMG’s 6.3L V8 engine that produces 518-hp and a peak torque of 465 lb-ft. Mated to AMG’s SPEEDSHIFT MCT 7-speed sports transmission the 2010 E63 AMG can go from 0 to 60 mph in just 4.4 seconds (BMW M5 and new Jaguar XFR reaching 60-mph in 4.5 seconds and 4.7 seconds) with a top speed of 155 mph (electronically limited).

Press Release:

AMG Driving Academy 2009/2010: Adrenalin, driving enjoyment and active handling safety – the new programme of the AMG Driving Academy

Driving at high speeds, improving active handling safety and enjoying unforgettable events with like-minded people – all this is what the AMG Driving Academy stands for. The new programme for the 2009/2010 season offers an even wider choice of events during which sports car enthusiasts with racing ambitions can improve their driving skills under the guidance of professional instructors. A new member of this team of experienced AMG instructors is the former DTM, ITC and FIA-GT Champion Bernd Schneider, one of Germany ’s most successful racing drivers.

The programme of events of the AMG Driving Academyfounded in 2007 is divided into five different skill levels: EMOTION, BASIC, ADVANCED, PRO and MASTERS. The choice extends from lifestyle-oriented events and race training events where the participants take their first steps towards the physical limits, right up to intensive racetrack training of a competitive nature – with varying levels of difficulty, and tailor-made to the individual needs of the participants. One new highlight in the EMOTION Tour calendar is a drive to Lake Constance and through the landscapes of Vorarlberg to Bregenz/Austria. This is followed by a performance of “Aida”, the world-famous opera by Giuseppi Verdi, on the lakeside stage in Bregenz.

During the performance-oriented events in the AMG Driving Academy programme, drivers gradually learn to assess and master critical situations in complete safety – on legendary racetracks such as the North Loop of the Nürburgring or the Grand Prix circuit in Spa-Francorchamps, Belgium. In this way the participants automatically sharpen their reflexes and improve their active handling safety. Licensed instructors with great motorsports experience impart their extensive knowledge in a professional manner. The learning effect is therefore directly combined with driving pleasure and passion.

One special event is the AMG Winter Sporting in Arjeplog (Sweden) close to the Arctic Circle: the AMG high-performance vehicles provided are driven exclusively on expanses of ice. All the vehicles are equipped with special, spiked tyres that ensure a precisely defined level of grip. The brand-new, exclusive AMGLodge situated amidst the breathtaking scenery of Swedish Lapland is a real highlight: opened in 2009, this AMG-owned hotel on Galtis Hill near Arjeplog offers a wonderful view across the forests and lakes of the region. The luxurious rooms, first-class restaurant and large spa facility with a pool and fitness studio guarantee a very pleasant stay.

AMG MASTERS Sports Trophy with a unique first prize

Sheer excitement and vehicle control at the highest level are the order of the day for the AMGMASTERS Sports Trophy. As part of this particularly exclusive, high-class AMG competition series, the participants have the benefit of intensive, individual racetrack training combined with medical care by trained sports therapists. Together with the contestants, AMG specialists with enormous know-how configure the most suitable, personal suspension setup for each vehicle. In 2009 the three to four-day events will take place at the Sachsenring (Germany), in Zandvoort (Netherlands), in Brno (Czechia) and at the Ascari Race Resort (Spain). The 25 drivers taking part in each event will collect points for the overall ranking, with a unique first prize awaiting the eventual winner: he will have the opportunity to drive the current AMGMercedes C-Class used in the DTM series.

Tomorrow at the 2009 Geneva Motor Show, Mercedes-Benz will be showing the 2010 E-Class Coupe and Sedan. However, the automaker didn’t want to leave out another of its latest creation in all this Geneva coverage. While the car won’t be seen anywhere near Geneva, Mercedes-Benz has dropped some official shots and details of its latest high-performance beast – the Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG (formally known as the SLC Gullwing).

The Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG is based on the 300SL and will feature the popular gullwing-style doors. The 3,571 pound SLS AMG isn’t ready to be revealed just yet; however, Mercedes-Benz has provided a couple of shots of the prototype undergoing testing.

The SLS AMG will be smaller than the SLR McLaren and will be powered by 6.2L V8 making a total of 563-hp with a maximum torque of 479 lb-ft. With the help of a “Race Start” launch control, the Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG will go from 0 to 62 mph in 3.8 seconds with a top speed of 196 mph.

“The horsepower war is over,” AMG boss Volker Mornhinweg told AutoCar. Mornhinweg said that AMG is now going to focus on pursuing higher fuel-economy for its future cars while trying to better performance levels. He said that AMG will do that by cutting weight, optimizing the engine and using other alternative fuel-saving technologies.

According to Mornhinweg, we’ll get to see those changes in the redesigned Mercedes-Benz E 63 AMG due out later this year. He said that the new E 63 AMG will be lighter and will provide a little more “grunt” with better fuel-economy.

The boss of AMG also confirmed that the high-performance division was looking into producing compact AMG models. A AMG A-Class or B-Class in the works? We’ll find out soon enough.

Just in case you had any doubts that consumer interest is in high-performance gas-guzzling vehicles is dying, Mercedes-Benz has announced that it will establish 175 new AMG Performance Centers worldwide by the end of next year. The Performance Centers will offer a more personalized and elite service to AMG customers that cashed out thousands for their mighty beast.

The AMG Performance Centers will target a total of 15 countries including the U.S., China, Japan, and of course European countries.

Check out this excerpt from the press release that will give you a brief idea of what to expect from these AMG Performance Centers:

“The redesigned sales showrooms of the AMG Performance Centers are characterized by a consistently applied and unique AMG brand identity. High quality materials, exclusive furnishings and a palette of colours that is representative of AMG create an exclusive atmosphere for sales discussions. An oversized AMG engine badge serves to remind visitors of the company’s philosophy of “One Man – One Engine”: The assembly of each powerful AMG engine by just one engineer. The individualization options available through the designo programme are also reflected at the AMG Performance Centers in the form of paintwork and leather samples.”

Wow – after reading that any average man would be afraid to walk into one of these centers. Anyway, another part of the AMG Performance Centers will be AMG’s Performance Roadshows which is an exclusive event that will allow 200 customers from each of 175 AMG Performance Centers to feel more special and hang out with other AMG lovers and get to go for crazy intensive test drives.

We recently heard that Mercedes-Benz’s AMG division will launch a hybrid model by 2010. Today, AMG Boss Volker Mornhinweg said that the Mercedes tuning division plans on launching a diesel model within three years – by 2012.

According to AutoCar, Mornhinweg said the car will be high-performance diesel that will be an updated version of its legendary AMG Hammer. The AMG Hammer sedan made its debut in 1986 and was based on a Mercedes-Benz W124. It was powered by a 5.6L V8 that made 360-hp and was said to be faster than a Lamborghini Countach from 60 to 120 mph.

Mornhigweg called the car the “Super Hammer” so we’re definitely excited to see what AMG has in the works. AutoCar says that AMG will most likely pick the C-Class or E-Class diesel for AMG treatment.

Completing the trio we’ve seen throughout the day, the 2009 Mercedes-Benz SL 65 AMG Black Series is the last car being shown off today by the AMG Performance Studio. The new SL 65 AMG Black Series was a tough job for the AMG Performance Studio who worked on the new body design with large air inlets, wide mudguards and features such as the extendable spoiler. A large number of components were made from lightweight carbon-fiber knocking off 550 lbs when comparing it to its sibling, the SL 65 AMG.

Even the chassis of the new 2009 Mercedes-Benz SL 65 AMG Black Series received a completely new design to work with the rear axle limited slip differential and the 3-level ESP. AMG Performance Studio topped off the SL 65 AMG Black Series with 19 or 20-inch Dunlop sports tires, an AMG high-performance brake system and an all-black interior featuring nappa leather, alcantara and carbon fiber trims.

Other than that we already know that power comes from a 6.0L V12 biturbo engine making 670-hp with a maximum torque of 738 lb-ft. Mated to a SPEEDSHIFT PLUS 5-speed automatic gearbox, the SL 65 AMG Black Series goes from 0 to 62 mph in 3.8 seconds with a top speed of 199 mph. The transmission also allows four different drive programs and a double clutch function.

Want to know more? We did some thorough digging and found out pricing details for you. Pricing starts at 327,250 euros ($415,918 USD) with the first models to be delivered later this month.
