Following the massive flood in Thailand, Honda decided to scrap more than 1,000 damaged cars. Several models were destroyed today including the Brio, Jazz, City, Civic, Accord, CR-V and Freed (if some of those don’t sound familiar it’s because they are only sold in China).

According to Pitak Pruittisarikorn, executive vice-president of Honda Automobile, the move was taken to regain public confidence. Honda will also prevent the re-use of all destroyed parts.

Americans traveled 46 billion more miles in 2010 then they did in 2009, but according a National Highway Traffic Safety Administration study, fatalities still remained on their 5 year decline.

In 2009, it was reported that it had been 60 years since the number of fatalities had as low as they were, and 2010 saw a 2.9% drop for the year, to 32,885, which is the lowest number since 1949. Oddly, travel had increased by 1.6% overall in 2010.

Declines in fatalities were found in the majority of the categories, but increased in motorcycle, large-truck, and pedestrian accidents. NHTSA has found that 2010 marked the fifth year in a row to see a decline in fatalities, the longest since 1899, when the studies began.

Drunk driving accidents have decreased by 4.9%, with 10,228 fatalities caused by drunk drivers.

NHSTA also has a new study being tested that will track the number of ‘dstraction-affected crashes’, that concentrates on drivers who are talking on cell phones, talking to passengers, or making adjustments to the stereo.

In 2014, NHSTA expects to release another study concerning crash involvement and how the driver reacts to them.

No car in an accident or on fire catches as much attention as an exclusive supercar. A Ferrari 599 GTB Firano was recently spotted burning slowly on a street in Dubai.

We’re not sure how the fire started or if anyone was injured in the process. All we can tell is no one driving by really cares to stop and check on what’s going on.

What you’re looking at is an outing of luxury sports car enthusiasts gone wrong. Apparently, the driver of one of the Ferraris attempted to switch lanes and hit the median barrier – that caused him to spin across the freeway and collide with other expensive supercars that were trying to avoid him. The damage? Likely more than $1 million.

NTV quoted the driver of one of the tow trucks saying it was the most expensive crash site he had ever seen – us too.

In all, the crash involved 14 vehicles, including 3 Mercedes-Benzs a Lamborghini, two Toyotas and eight Ferraris.

According to police, no one was seriously injured and a total of 10 people were treated for minor cuts and bruises.

All of the cars and their drivers were headed to a nearby enthusiasts gathering in Hiroshima.

We’re not sure why General Motors isn’t making a big deal about this – but the 2012 Chevrolet Camaro Coupe has become the first vehicle to earn a perfect score in the recently revised crash testing by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration’s New Car Assessment Program.

The 2012 Camaro receives a 5-star overall rating with a 5-star frontal crash, 5-star side crash and a 5-star rating in a rollover crash.

The new NHTSA rating came after too many cars were earning high-scores in the older style of testing.

The Honda Accord and the Kia Optima are the only two other cars that come closest to the Camaro’s performance in the tests.

A study just put out by the American Journal of Public Health finds that women have a significantly higher risk of dying or become injured in automotive accidents. The actual figure puts women who wear seat belts at a 47 percent greater risk over men who wear seat belts.

The cause? Design. Since men are much more likely to be in serious or fatal crashes than the ladies, the seat belt systems are geared towards men. This is becoming (?) an increasingly large issue, now that numbers for women in these kinds of accidents are on the rise.

Center for Auto Safety representative Clarence Ditlow doesn’t subscribe to the data, however, and says that because all the crashes research had been done on applied to cars that were, on average, six years old, while “The average life of the car is around 12 years.” He continues, to say “The study would have a lot more value if it were limited to 2000 and later model year vehicles to make sure all vehicles had female friendly airbags… Some of the cars used in the study are almost 20 years old. There wasn’t even a dynamic side impact test standard in effect in 1992.”

Ditlow also notes that efforts have been made by both the automotive industry and the government to resolve the matter in the past, and he notes that there is a difference, still, in the risk for female and male drivers.

Cars are safer than ever been before. But no five-star crash rating, reinforced cabin cell and x amount of airbags can defy Newton’s simple laws of physics when speeds reach the highway limits and higher.

As the famed Jeremy Clarkson once said, “Speed doesn’t kill. It’s suddenly becoming stationary that does.” And while Top Gear is known to do the ambitious but rubbish tests, the program’s cousin Fifth Gear thought they’d show the world what happens when a car goes from 120 mph to zero.

But don’t worry. The car chosen for the test isn’t anything of particular interest.

Automobile manufacturers are going above and beyond to meet sales quotas as everyone is pretty much in a sales race. But come the huge influx of new models, comes a ripple effect that puts a lot of pressure on the National Highway Traffic and Safety Administration. And that’s because they have a list consisting of 74 vehicles that will need to be destroyed multiple times in order each individual car to obtain their official crash safety rating.

These 74 cars make up about 92% of the 2012 fleet of new models to launch next year: 42 of them are passenger cars while the remaining are 22 sport utility vehicles, two vans and eight pickup trucks.

“Our 5-star ratings program is a critical resource to help consumers make the best possible decisions about the cars they want to buy,” said U.S. Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood. “By revamping the tests and creating a more rigorous program last year, we raised the bar on safety for all vehicle manufacturers. People should remember: More stars, safer cars.”

The FBI agent that wrecked a $750,000 Ferrari that was seized in a drug raid is facing no penalty for the 1995 F50′s damage.

According to U.S. District Judge Avern Cohn, the government is given immunity for property being held by law enforcement and they can’t be sued.

While Motors Insurance thinks this is FBI agent Fred Kingston’s joyride gone wrong, and that the Ferrari was not even technically in custody, Judge Cohn felt otherwise.

Owning a premium supercar has its ups bit it also has its downs. Case in point – an owner of this Lamborghini Gallardo spent a wonderful day at the track – but on his way home he found himself in a pretty sticky situation that will most likely cost him and arm and leg.

According to YouTube user Marchettino who filmed and uploaded this video you’re about to see here:

I have filmed a friend’s Lamborghini Gallardo during a trackday event. Video shows first some track scenes. At the end of the day my friend left the racetrack. The main road was very tight, there was another car coming from the opposite way. Worried about scratching his car against the other, my friend moved too much on the right side of the road and half of the car fell down. Actually, we were in the countryside, in the middle of nowhere. It was a pretty difficult situation to move the car. Before all the haters starts to write negative comments about my friend.. it’s just an accident, it could happen to everyone.

A new study by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) shows that SUV’s may have been a part of many fatal crashes a decade ago, but recent advancements have greatly improved the safety of these vehicles.

The study compares how many people in minivans and cars were killed in two car crashes with pickups or SUV’s. The data is examined over two eras, first from 2000-2001, and again from 2008-2009. From 2000-2001, there were 44 fatalities in this specific type of crash for every million registered vehicle years. The number of deaths dropped to 16, which is close to two-thirds, in the 2008-2009 time frame.

With the exception of vehicles over 4,500lbs, all other weight categories had a decrease in the number of deaths in car crashes, as well.

Several factors have contributed to this decline, including side airbags, stronger body structures, and SUV’s and pickups being designed with improvements that absorb crash energy.

As for single-vehicle crashes, Electronic Stability Control can be credited for playing a part in saving lives. SUV’s are now rated the safest by IIHS with the most protection provided to passengers thanks to this technology.

There’s just something about watching supercars ended up in sticky and wet situation. What you see here is a Nissan GT-R that crashed into ditch filled with water in Amsterdam, Holland.

According to reports, the driver of the Nissan GT-R was returning from a local track event when he lost control of the GT-R. The reason behind losing control? Unknown – but we wouldn’t rule out speeding as the cause.

Fortunately, no one was injured during the whole incident.

Robert Gulpen, current model maker and former Mercedes-Benz engineer, has intensely crafted a 1:8 scale replica of a Lamborghini Aventador LP 700-4 that was reveled at this years Frankfurt Motor Show.

The tiny model is set apart from its larger counterparts by its enormous price tag. Gulpen’s model supercar is going for an outrageous $4.83 million. That compares to a life sized version at 12 times the $379,000 price.

High quality and precious materials account for a good portion of the price. The interior and rims are made of platinum and solid gold, and a solid gold thread is wrapped around the carbon fibers of the body parts. Bulletproof glass was used for the logo and gems, gold and platinum adorn the showcase.

Between all the materials and the 500 hours spent creating the Lamborghini model, it seems the price is right. An auction will be held in either New York or Dubai starting at $4.3 million, and depending on the final bid, around $690,000 will go to charity.

Riding a bike is probably the most exhilarating feeling in the world, especially when you’re riding at high-speeds. Nonetheless, anyone will agree that it isn’t the safest form of transportation. No matter how attentive you are, you can never judge the reactions of others around – even if they aren’t human, which is the case in this situation.

A biker ended up hitting a turkey that unexpectedly appeared on the road.

“The biker is expected to make a full recovery from this accident, the turkey…not so much,” says the description in the video.

Automotive enthusiasts often bond amongst their like. Two friends from Switzerland, however, may very well have their likeness coming between them.

One of the men did the other a favor by lending his friend his Porsche 911 turbo. The friend went for more than a typical joy ride. The 911′s trip should have ended back at its owner’s home, however, it ended up at the bottom of the Rhine river.

This is definitely an interesting way to put a friendship to the test.

A Lithuanian mayor pulled an interesting stunt recently to send out a rather simple message. But the way he delivered his message is anything but simple. Arturas Zuokas, the Mayor of the city of Vilnus used a BTR, or a standard Soviet issue armored troop carrier, to crush a W140 Mercedes-Benz S-Class as part of a publicity stunt to show his frustration over the fact that wealthy citizens disregard the local parking laws wherever they choose to.

I must say, being a Mercedes-Benz enthusiast, the death of one of Stuttgart’s finest was probably not the most tasteful way to get his point across. Either way, Zuokas’s message is plain and clear.

“I wanted to send a message” Zuokas told the media. “I want to point out that if you have a car and more money it doesn’t mean that you can park it everywhere. Recently there’s been an increase in this type of parking violations, and it shows a lack of respect for others.”
