Infiniti Adds Limited Production 2010 G Anniversary Edition Sedans, Coupes and Convertibles

– Infiniti Celebrates Two Decades of Luxury with New Anniversary Editions –

While every 2010 Infiniti G Sedan, Coupe or Convertible seems special to those who design, engineer, manufacture or market them – and also to their owners – Infiniti has just released four new G Anniversary Editions that stand apart from every other Infiniti G ever created. These uniquely equipped Anniversary G37s, built in commemoration of Infiniti’s 20th anniversary, will be available in very limited numbers – 350 G Sedans and 200 each for the G Coupe and G Convertible. They are scheduled to go on sale at Infiniti retailers nationwide in mid-April.

The Manufacturer’s Suggested Retail Prices (MSRP)* for the four available 2010 Infiniti G Anniversary Editions are:

The Anniversary Edition Sedans and Coupe also receive the Sport Package and 4-Wheel Active Steer (not available on Sedan AWD). The Convertible is offered with the highly desirable climate-controlled seats.

Each Anniversary Edition comes in a new Graphite Shadow exterior color that was just added for 2010, with the interiors appointed with Monaco Red Leather. The Coupe and Convertible interiors are accented with special Red-toned Maple and the two Sedans have the new Shodo-finish aluminum trim.

Other Anniversary Edition equipment includes special aluminum-alloy wheels, W-rated summer performance tires, Midnight Black grille, unique front chin spoiler or front fascia, sport side sills (Coupe and Convertible) and rear spoiler (except Convertible). The Coupe also receives an updated rear fascia.

“We wanted to ensure that the G Anniversary Editions are the sportiest and most distinctive Infinitis offered,” added Poore. “Though they won’t arrive until April, we wanted to release pricing early to allow interested buyers to reserve the Anniversary Sedan, Coupe or Convertible of their choice before they are all gone.”

Click here to get prices on the 2010 Ford Fusion Hybrid.

“It’s extraordinary that a car could set sales records and continue to excel in an environment where overall industry sales in the midsize segment are down 19 percent from a year ago,” said Ken Czubay, Ford vice president of Marketing and Sales and Service.

Since the new Ford Fusion went on sale in March 2009, the car has set monthly sales records for the nameplate in every month but one.

German tuner Geiger Cars’ boss Karl Geiger seems to be obsessed with American Cars – a rare combination indeed. Nonetheless, Geiger’s love for American performance cars has gave many of us something to be excited about. Following the 701-hp Ford GT, 592-hp Corvette Z06, 890-hp Corvette Z06 and the 568-hp Camaro SS – Geiger is back with a modified version of the Mustang Shelby GT500.

Geiger’s engineers worked on the already powerful V8 of the Shelby GT500 but added some upgrades including a 3.3L compressor, a 1.6 bar supercharging pressure, a modified injection system, larger throttle valves, a 100 millimeter air flow meter and machined cylinder heads. All that allows for an output of 799-hp with a peak torque of 697 lb-ft.

Geiger is so confident and proud of what they’ve created that in their press release they say: “Perhaps this Mustang Shelby version would also put the fear of God into the US racing legend Carroll Shelby!”

Press Release:

Alongside the Ford Mustang V6 and its V8 brother Mustang GT there is the crowning glory of the series the wild Mustang Shelby GT500, which is equipped ex factory with 540 PS, an aggressive body and traditional double stripe paintwork. Anyone who remembers the American racing legend Carroll Shelby will be able to instantly imagine how uncompromising and purist the Shelby GT500 factory settings already are. The US car specialist Karl Geiger from Munich has now got its hands on this vehicle and take a look at how the upright Cobra has been transformed into an almost untameable monster!

810 PS, 945 Nm engine torque

As usual the engineers at GeigerCars.de from Munich operated on the open V8 heart of the American muscle car and in the process left no stone unturned. For more pressure they donated a 3.3 litre compressor to the 5.4 litre aluminium engine block which with its 1.6 bar supercharging pressure provides real fire in the forged crank drive. Larger throttle valves, a modified injection system, a 100 millimetre air flow meter and machined cylinder heads also guarantee that the inner organs are fine tuned. Additional coolers for charge air, coolant and engine oil ensure that the eight cylinder can always work at the perfect temperature range despite massively increased power.

Thanks to the massive changes the Geiger Mustang Shelby GT now generates a legendary 810 PS at 6,700 rpm, whereas the maximum engine torque of 945 Nm at approx. 4,300 rpm pulls on the increased differentials. Of course with so much engine torque the transmission also had to be reinforced and in the same step its 5th and 6th gears were shortened. A 3 disc carbon clutch produces smooth power transmission. A special manifold with racing catalytic converters and customised sport exhaust guarantee that exhaust gases are disposed of properly according to type.

High end chassis engineering

So that so much power can also be transformed in acceleration, GeigerCars.de fitted the Shelby with a special racing chassis as well as a Panhard rod made from chrome-moly steel including polyurethane bushes on the ends to balance the axial offset and new reinforced and adjustable trailing arms for improved rear axle directional stability. For the all-important contact to the asphalt surface four classic OZ alloy wheels in 8.5 and 10×20 inch guarantee adequate grip thanks to Michelin high performance tyres in 245/35ZR20 and 285/30ZR20. The upright Cobra is slowed down using 6 piston high performance brakes on the front axle with 380 millimetre large drilled or optionally slotted brake discs.

Perhaps this Mustang Shelby version would also put the fear of God into the US racing legend Carroll Shelby!

Press Release:

New Corvette Racing C6.R and Production Corvette ZR1 Represent the Culmination of More Than 10 Years of Technology Transfer

Updated C6.R to Race in 2010 Le Mans, 50 Years After Corvette’s First Appearance in Legendary Endurance Race

DETROIT – Corvette Racing’s second-generation C6.R will be powered by a new 5.5L production-based V-8, to compete in the new unified GT class in the 2010 American Le Mans Series as well as the GT2 class at the 24 Hours of Le Mans. The updated C6.R and the Corvette ZR1 on which it’s based represent the strongest link yet between a production Corvette and the modern Corvette Racing team. Both cars are well-equipped to compete on and off the track with showroom competitors including Aston Martins, BMWs, Porsches and Ferraris.

Corvette has a long history of production-based endurance racing, making its first appearance at the 12 Hours of Sebring in 1956, and its first appearance at Le Mans in 1960. Then Corvette chief engineer Zora Arkus-Duntov leveraged the racing program to improve the production Corvette, as evidenced by the development of heavy-duty and high-performance components and the introduction of the race-bred Z06 option on the 1963 Corvette Sting Ray.

The transfer of technology between racing and production cars resumed with the start of the modern Corvette Racing program in 1999. More than a decade later, it’s impossible to imagine one team without the other, according to Tadge Juechter, Corvette chief engineer:

“Simply put, without Corvette Racing, there would not be a Corvette Z06, much less the ZR1. And, without the foundation of the Corvette C6, Z06 and ZR1, the Corvette Racing team would not be the dominant presence in production-based racing.”

1999 – 2004: The C5-R acts as a catalyst for Corvette performance

Corvette Racing campaigned the C5-R from 1999 through the end of the 2004 season. The first-generation car scored 35 victories in 55 races, won its class at the 12 Hours of Sebring three consecutive years, posted three 1-2 finishes in the GTS class at the 24 Hours of Le Mans, and earned four consecutive ALMS manufacturers championships for Chevrolet.

It also served as a catalyst for Corvette performance.

In 1999, the fifth-generation Corvette C5 produced 345 horsepower from its 5.7L V-8. Leveraging the powertrain technologies developed for the C5R, Corvette brought back the hallowed Z06 moniker in 2001, packing a 385 horsepower 5.7L V-8.

In addition, the C5-R helped shape the sixth-generation Corvette, introduced for the 2005 model year. Corvette Racing’s influence could be seen in the C6 Corvette design, which featured flush headlights for better aerodynamics; a single, large grille opening for the engine air intake, radiator, and brake cooling; a lower coefficient of drag; and low 3,179 pound curb weight. Lessons from racing were also integrated in the 6.0L LS2 V-8, the most powerful standard Corvette engine to date, with 400 horsepower and 400 lb-ft of torque. As a result, the C6 Corvette delivered unprecedented performance, including a 186-mph top speed, acceleration from 0-60 mph in 4.1 seconds, and quarter-mile runs in 12.6 seconds at 114 mph.

2005 – 2009: The co-development of the C6.R and Z06

The C6 Corvette served as a foundation for the joint development of two new, high-performance Corvettes: the 2006 Corvette Z06 and the Corvette Racing C6.R, introduced in 2005.

Both cars were powered by 7.0L small-block V-8 engines, with dry-sump lubrication systems, CNC-ported aluminum cylinder heads, titanium valves, forged steel crankshafts, and plate-honed cylinder bores.

For the Z06, the collaboration translated into 505hp, 470 lb.-ft. of torque, and searing performance: 198-mph top speed, acceleration from 0 – 60 mph in 3.7 seconds, and quarter-mile runs in 11.7 seconds at 125 mph. Racing’s influence was also evident in the Corvette Z06 use of lightweight carbon fiber front fenders and wheelhouses, and aerodynamics package – including a front splitter, air extractors behind the front wheels, radiused trailing edges on the wheel openings, brake cooling scoops, widened rear fenders, rear diffuser, and spoiler.

For the C6.R, homologation on the Z06 translated into 42 wins, four consecutive ALMS drivers and manufacturers championships, and three victories at the 24 Hours of Le Mans.

2010: Introducing the second-generation C6.R, based on the ZR1

In the 2010 American Le Mans Series, Corvette Racing will compete in the series’ production-based GT category (formerly GT2) and in the GT2 class at the 24 Hours of Le Mans with a second-generation C6.R that is homologated on the Corvette ZR1.

The GT rules require the use of many production-based components, making the ZR1 and C6.R the closest street and racing Corvettes since the 1960s.

Introduced for the 2009 model year, the ZR1 is the fastest, most powerful car ever produced by Chevrolet. To deliver 638 hp, the LS9 V-8 engines are hand-built using many of the processes developed by the race team. To deliver a 205-mph top speed, the ZR1 aerodynamics package also utilizes race technology – including wide carbon fiber front fenders with dual vents, a full-width rear spoiler, and a front splitter.

The updated C6.R utilizes the ZR1 body design, aerodynamic package, aluminum frame and chassis structure, steering system, windshield, and other components.

Aluminum frame: The new Corvette C6.R is built on the same aluminum frame rails that underpin production Corvette Z06 and ZR1 models. Other production chassis structures in the race car include the windshield frame, the hoop around the rear of the passenger compartment, the door hinge pillars, the drivetrain tunnel, the firewall, and the floor pan.

Steering system: The new Corvette C6.R utilizes the production steering column out of the ZR1, with a fully adjustable steering wheel, and production rack-and-pinion steering rack.

Body profile: The Corvette C6.R race car is now virtually identical to the Corvette ZR1 street car in appearance, as GT rules require production-type fenders with simple flares to accommodate wider tires.

Aerodynamics: The new C6.R utilizes the full-width, production rear spoiler from the ZR1, and a production-based ZR1 front splitter that extends 25mm, in contrast to the 80mm splitter allowed under the GT1 rules. Although the aerodynamics package does not produce the same levels of downforce as the GT1 car, the C6.R is more predictable over a wide range of speeds.

Where the C6.R and ZR1 differ significantly are in situations where GT rules actually prohibited the use of the more sophisticated ZR1 components. For example, the ZR1 is equipped with carbon-composite brake rotors, while GT regulations require ferrous (steel) brake discs. And, where the ZR1 utilizes a 6.2L, supercharged V-8, the C6.R will use a naturally aspirated small-block, production-based 5.5L V-8.

The Corvette C6.R race cars’ 5.5-liter Chevrolet small-block V8s are developed, built and maintained by GM. The Corvette C6.Rs’ LS5.5R is a naturally aspirated race engine, based on the Corvette Z06’s 7.0-liter LS7 engine (which in turn was developed with the 7.0L race engine used in the C6.R GT1 cars), built on production cast-aluminum cylinder blocks.

Pending GT2 class regulations specify a maximum displacement of 5.5 liters, the reduction in displacement to meet this requirement was achieved by shortening the crankshaft stroke and reducing the cylinder bore diameter. In accordance with the regulations, the race engines have two 28.8mm diameter intake air restrictors. The LS5.5R engines are equipped with dry-sump oiling systems, CNC-ported aluminum cylinder heads with titanium intake and exhaust valves, and sequential electronic port fuel injection. The race engines use E85R ethanol racing fuel in the ALMS and E10 fuel in Le Mans.

Race on Sunday, Sell on Monday

Clearly, Corvette Racing’s success in production-based endurance racing has played a significant role in improving the performance of the production Corvette. In addition, as the racing and production cars have become more closely linked, Corvette Racing has also shown a positive impact in Corvette sales.

“Corvette sales tracked directly to customer leads at ALMS races have doubled from 2005 to 2009,” says John Fitzpatrick, Chevrolet Performance Cars marketing manager. “This proves what we have heard anecdotally from other Corvette owners: Watching production-based Corvettes win against legendary marques like BMW, Porsche and Ferrari, on legendary tracks like Sebring and Le Mans, makes Corvette all the more desirable.”

Cadillac will forever indebted to two individuals by the names of Wayne Cherry and Kip Wasenko; those are the individuals who designed the CTS, and in turn put Cadillac back on the map, making GM’s luxury brand one to be taken seriously in the segment once again. The duo’s stealth aircraft-inspired “Art and Science” design language continues to be a staple at Cadillac. In hopes to further reinvent the brand and expand its offerings, Cadillac has introduced the CTS Sport Wagon. Before you cringe in disgust at the thought, the sharp-edged rear-end, shiny wheels, and sharp red paint make this wagon one of the sharpest looking on the market, at least in our comparison.

Being the first Cadillac station-wagon offered to the U.S. market that is not a hearse, the CTS Sport Wagon offers a practical solution to pet-lovers, campers, and travelers alike.

Exterior:

“It’s a taut, sleek design,” said Clay Dean, global design director for Cadillac. “The drama of the sedan is amplified in the wagon, as the centerline cue that is part of the exterior and interior is more prominent and plays a stronger role in defining the design at the rear of the vehicle.”

While most of the CTS Sport Wagon borrows its look from the sedan, the rear of the vehicle is where the Sport Wagon establishes its own identity. Most sedans give up a certain amount of aesthetic appeal when being converted to a station wagon, however, the CTS Sport Wagon pulls it off almost seamlessly. This is accomplished by blending the roofline of the CTS Sport Wagon with the roof edges, allowing an unobstructed placement of cross bards and creating a fin-line effect at the trailing edges of the rear panels.

Overall, when compared to German rivals in the segment (including the BMW 5-Series Sport Wagon, the Mercedes-Benz E-Class Estate and the Audi A6 Avant), the CTS Sport Wagon really stands out with its sharp creases and downright aggressive styling.

Interior:

By its very nature, a station-wagon is all about the interior and the cargo space that it offers. The front of the cabin is a carbon copy of the CTS sedan, so the fact that you’re driving a wagon might not be readily apparent; until you turn your attention rearward. Though it shares almost the same exterior dimensions as the sedan, the interior carrying capacity is nearly doubled, offering 25 cubic feet (720 liters) of space behind the rear seats, and 53.4 cubic feet (1,523 liters) with the rear seats folded down.

The rear cargo area also contains an integrated cargo management system that stows neatly under the floor when not in use. The standard power liftgate is operated by push-button and can be programmed to lift to a specific height.

Depending on what trim-level you purchase, you can opt for a 40-gigabyte internal hard drive, pop-up navigation screen, a large available panoramic rear sunroof, heated and ventilated seats and a rear-entertainment system.

Performance:

As mentioned above, one will hardly notice a difference between the front exterior/interior of the wagon and that of the sedan, and the same holds true for performance.

The base 2010 Cadillac CTS Sport Wagon, starting at $38,265, is powered by a 3.0L direct-injected V6 making 270-hp and 223 lb-ft of torque. Mated to a Hydra-Matic 6-speed automatic transmission, the 3.0L equipped models manage an EPA-estimated highway fuel-economy of 28 mpg.

GM also offers the CTS Sport Wagon with an optional 3.6L direct-injected V6 making 304-hp and 273 lb-ft of torque (our test-model); however, pricing for the trim-levels carrying the more powerful engine start at $43,365. The extra money for the 34-hp might be somewhat wasted however, as GM says both engines balance performance and efficiency while operating on regular unleaded gas; many of the vehicle’s competitors require premium fuel. EPA estimated fuel-economy for the 3.6L V6 model comes in at 18/26 mpg (city/highway). We managed to average 17.6 mpg throughout our week long test.

The CTS Sport Wagon features advanced chassis technology in the form of Cadillac’s StabiliTrak electronic chassis control system, integrating the car’s standard four-channel ABS with the full-function traction control, hydraulic brake assist and engine drag control systems. Also available on the Sport Wagon, as on the sedan, is the optional all-wheel drive system.

The CTS Sport Wagon may get an even more powerful engine. Bob Lutz had confirmed this past November that GM planned to expand its CTS-V lineup to include the Sport Wagon, but nothing has developed since.

Overall:

Practicality, sedan-like performance, and a very competitive price tag – those are all the things that make the 2010 Cadillac CTS Sport Wagon a desirable option on any station wagon shopper’s list.

The folks at Hennessey Performance have gotten their hands on the new Lincoln MKS EcoBoost and strapped on a couple of modifications to the 355-hp 3.5L V6 twin-turbocharged EcoBoost unit. Their upgrades resulted in a horsepower increase to 435-hp with a maximum torque of 405 lb-ft. That allows the Hennessey MaxBoost 435 (that’s what they call it) to go from 0-60 mph in 4.5 seconds and to run the 1/4 mile in 13 seconds at 106 mph.

Bentley has finally released the details specifications of the new 2010 Mulsanne, its new flagship that weighs in at an outstanding 5,700 pounds.

To push around that 5,700 pounds, Bentley has opted to use a 6.75 litre twin-turbocharged V8 engine making 505-hp with a peak torque of 752 lb-ft. Mated to an 8-speed automatic transmission with electronic shift interface, sport mode and steering-wheel mounted paddle-shifters – the Bentley Mulsanne goes from 0-60 mph in 5.1 seconds with a top speed of 184 mph. Fuel-economy is estimated at a combined 14 mpg.

The Bentley Mulsanne also gets a new Drive Dynamics Control system, operated by a rotary switch mounted next to the gearshift. It allows the drive to pick from three different modes including Bentley (yes it’s called Bentley), Sport and Comfort. Each setting offers calibration of suspension and steering control systems.

Press Release:

BENTLEY ANNOUNCES DETAILED SPECIFICATION OF NEW MULSANNE

“The new Mulsanne is a thoroughly modern flagship that captures the essence of the Bentley marque. It is elegant yet distinctly sporting in character, delivering effortless performance while within its sumptuous cabin, advanced technology sits discreetly with handcrafted luxury.” Bentley Motors Chairman and Chief Executive, Dr. Franz-Josef Paefgen

While paying homage to past Bentley greats, the brief for the new Mulsanne’s design and engineering teams was to create a Bentley that represents the pinnacle of British luxury motoring.

The new Mulsanne, designed and engineered at Crewe from the ground-up, reaffirms the marque’s intent to create a new flagship Bentley with refined performance, unparalleled levels of interior luxury and coach building skills to the fore.

The return of the Mulsanne name underlines Bentley’s sporting heritage and passion for power and speed. Nothing reflects that prowess better than the legendary Le Mans 24 Hours race. Bentley has enjoyed success on six occasions at Le Mans, where its powerful and reliable race cars have thundered down the long straight into the famous Mulsanne corner, from which the new model takes its name.

A pure expression of Bentley design

The design of the new Mulsanne is a unique fusion of sportiness, coachbuilt elegance and solidity. Echoing the Bentley S -Type of the 1950s, the Mulsanne features a bold frontal design dominated by the traditional Bentley matrix grille and highly prominent, classic round inner headlamps with chrome surrounds, flanked by two, smaller outboard lamp clusters, all featuring the latest in lighting technology. The iconic ‘Flying B’ retractable radiator mascot is available as an option.

The long bonnet, short front overhang and long rear overhang help to convey a sense of power and movement, reinforced by muscular haunches and sharply sculptured lines which flow gracefully from the front wings to the rear. Uniquely designed 20-inch (and optional 21-inch) wheels reinforce the Mulsanne’s powerful, sporting stance.

Design Director Dirk van Braeckel explains the inspiration behind the Mulsanne’s distinctive appearance:
“The opportunity to design a new flagship Bentley is something afforded to very few designers. The team set out to create a sculpted form that blended classic Bentley heritage cues with modern lines.”

The body is produced in a new manufacturing facility at Bentley’s headquarters in Crewe where traditional metalworking skills, developed over six decades, are still used extensively during the nine-week build process. It is the very opposite of volume-production car-building… but the very epitome of Bentley.

The rear screen, for example is fully enveloped by the coachwork. This provides a flowing, flawless line to the rear of the car, complementing the exquisitely formed D-pillars – whose complex curves can only be created by skilled coach-builders. The complex form of the aluminium front wings, impossible to achieve with normal pressing techniques, is created using superforming, a technology usually reserved for the aerospace industry. This also makes the wings lighter, stiffer and provides superb surface definition. New construction techniques meant the designers could also incorporate details such as the ‘floating’ elliptical LED tail lights, which uniquely echo the shape of the exhaust tailpipes.

To accentuate the beauty of the bodywork, the Mulsanne features ‘brightware’ exclusively in polished stainless steel, including sill treadplates and matrix grilles. Bentley is the only manufacturer in the world to do this.

The door handles incorporate the traditional Bentley ‘knurling’ to their inboard surface for enhanced grip, reflecting the company’s typical attention to detail, while .the sporting character of the Mulsanne is reinforced by front wing vents and wide oval tailpipe finishers.

Bentley customers have a world of infinite choice when commissioning their cars. There are over 100 paint colours in the range that include everything from unusual heritage colours, special satin and pearlescent finishes and duo-tone combinations. But the choice does not end there. Through the bespoke world of Bentley Mulliner, unique colours can exactly match a customer’s vision and taste.

Sumptuous interior meets advanced technology

The latest in-car technologies are discreetly placed within the Mulsanne’s sumptuous interior. A multimedia system with 60GB hard disc drives satellite navigation, audio/video, personal data, telephone and Bluetooth® connectivity. The upper dashboard houses an 8-inch multimedia screen, positioned unobtrusively behind an electrically operated veneered door, while below sits a stylish, leather-lined media player stowage drawer with connectors for iPod, USB, Mini USB and 3.5mm aux.

A state-of-the-art 14-speaker audio system with Digital Signal Processing (DSP) and 6-CD autochanger is provided as standard while the Naim for Bentley premium audio system may be specified as an option. This forging of two British luxury brands provides customers with the world’s most powerful production in-car amplifier with 2200 Watts, eight dedicated DSP modes and 20 custom-made speakers, delivering an unparalleled sound quality.

A personalised keyless entry system allows multiple pre-programmed configurations and automatically sets radio stations, phone book, seat (including ventilation and massage modes, both front and rear), steering column and seatbelt settings and even the electrically operated rear-seat blinds for side and rear windows. The keyless system operates with the chrome door handles which incorporate touch points to initiate communication with the key for verification and entry. The Mulsanne also features keyless start, having a stop/start button on the centre console.

The Bentley interior design team has continued to develop and evolve the luxurious interiors for which their cars are renowned, based on a large-scale, research programme to identify the classic signature features that have defined Bentleys from the 1920s to the present day.

Armed with this invaluable resource, the Mulsanne’s design team set itself highly challenging targets for key interior characteristics such as material design, smell, colour harmony and handcrafting. Similar targets were set for the operational refinement and robustness of all control mechanisms. The result is a hand-crafted interior that fully reflects traditional Bentley values, executed to the highest possible standards.

As Head of Interior Design, Robin Page says: “Over 170 hours – almost half the entire build process – goes into crafting the interior of the new Mulsanne. At Crewe, Bentley’s way of working is the opposite of mass production – we start where others stop.”

The use of wood and leather hides has increased significantly to create an even more refined and luxurious cabin. While classic design features such as bulls-eye air vents (now also fitted in the rear compartment), high-quality mirror-matched wood veneers, leather hides and hand-finished stainless steel are retained, they are mixed with new touches such as beautiful ‘glass’ switches.

The entire cabin is encased within a ‘ring of wood’ waistrail with an unbroken panel of wood gracing the Mulsanne’s dashboard. Inverted dial needles within the instrument cluster are evocative of early Bentleys while the entire dashboard and console design is a subtle reminder of the Bentley wings motif.

Customers may select from an extensive range of premium quality veneers, unbleached for a natural appearance, and two marquetry options: picture frame and contemporary crossbanding. True to the Bentley ethos, customers may also select from a virtually unlimited palette of leather hides, including 24 ‘standard’ colours, of which three are new for Bentley. This unrivalled choice of veneers, leather hides and paint colours ensures that the needs of all customers can be matched perfectly.

Following detailed customer feedback, a traditional tanning process has been re-instated to match the rich, worn leather smell that is so evocative of vintage Bentleys. Only a very few hide suppliers worldwide have the capability to do this.

The carpet of the Mulsanne is unique to Bentley, its increased fibre depth, density and feel enhancing cabin quality. It is available in a range of colours to complement each individual hide. Pure wool, deep pile Wilton-weave over mats can add a further touch of comfort and luxury.

These exquisite materials are fashioned by craftsmen and women with up to 40 years’ experience. Each steering wheel, for example, can take 15 hours to hand-stitch while stainless steel brightware gleams so perfectly thanks to an intensive 10-hour finishing process. A wood veneer takes five weeks to turn from a rough root ball into a full set of mirror-matched, fine-polished leaves.

Re-engineered V8 engine and new chassis: power, refinement and efficiency

The Bentley powertrain engineers were set three objectives for the Mulsanne:
1) To produce the effortless torque from extremely low revs that customers expect of a grand Bentley
2) To maintain the highest levels of refinement
3) To satisfy strict current and future environmental standards through improved engine efficiency

While other powertrain configurations were considered early on in the project, it soon became clear that these targets could best be achieved with a totally revised version of the 6¾-litre V8 engine – the very configuration that had been used so successfully in the past. However for the new Mulsanne, all the major building blocks of the engine would be comprehensively re-engineered to integrate the very latest technologies.

Dr Ulrich Eichhorn, Bentley Motors’ Director of Engineering, explains the reasons behind the Mulsanne’s V8:
“Using our V8 guaranteed the immense power at low revs and unstressed performance that are the hallmarks of a flagship Bentley. But we also set our engineers the challenge of maintaining high levels of refinement at any speed and, equally important, improving efficiency.”

To achieve a significant reduction in fuel consumption and CO2. emissions, the Mulsanne V8 sees the introduction of two new control systems: cam phasing and, a first for the ultra-luxury sector, variable displacement.

The pioneering use of these two technologies in combination allows the Mulsanne’s engine management system not only to adjust the V8’s breathing for improved engine idle quality and torque delivery, but also to close the valves of four of the eight cylinders for maximum fuel economy when cruising.

New lightweight componentry including pistons, connecting rods and forged crankshaft reduce reciprocating mass and internal friction for improved engine response.

In the new Mulsanne, the 6¾-litre V8 develops 512 PS (505 bhp/377 kW) while the massive torque (1020 Nm / 752 lb ft) is now delivered even earlier at 1750 rev/min. This dramatic improvement in torque delivery from just above idle and right across the rev range ensures that with a mere tap of the accelerator the driver is immediately rewarded with that characteristic deep, muffled V8 burble and phenomenal acceleration.

These new technologies are complemented by the new eight-speed automatic transmission which, for the first time on a flagship Bentley, comes with steering-wheel mounted paddleshift.

Overall, CO2 emissions and fuel consumption are reduced by more than 15 percent, in line with Bentley’s environmental commitment.

Prodigious power and torque are complemented by an all-new chassis, unique to the new Mulsanne. Both lighter and stiffer than previous flagship Bentleys, the new chassis benefits both ride and handling.
A new Drive Dynamics Control system, operated by a rotary switch mounted next to the gearshift selector, can be used to choose from three standard modes – Bentley, Sport and Comfort – offering precise calibration of suspension and steering control systems.

A fourth mode, ‘Custom’, allows the driver to select bespoke settings via the multimedia system to ‘tune’ the Mulsanne to a preferred driving style.

A new air suspension system with Continuous Damping Control (CDC) creates an even more refined and comfortable ride at lower speeds, yet can reduce the Mulsanne’s ride height automatically at high speeds to reduce lift and improve aerodynamic stability. With 20-inch alloy wheels and 265/45 ZR 20 tyres as standard, dynamic handling is assured. Customers may also opt for 21-inch wheels, available in two styles, fitted with 265/40 ZR 21 tyres.

Summary

While the all-new Bentley Mulsanne pays respect to the past, it is a thoroughly modern luxury car that offers the world’s most exclusive driving experience – a unique fusion of power, refinement and elegance.

Bentley Motors Chairman and Chief Executive Dr. Franz-Josef Paefgen says:
“No other car maker can offer such a blend of performance and refinement in a single vehicle. The new Mulsanne is a car that evokes the Bentley philosophy of building the best luxury grand tourers in the world.”

At the 2010 Geneva Motor Show today, Brabus displayed the new E V12 Coupe – describing it as the world’s fastest Gran Turismo.

Based on the new 2010 Mercedes-Benz E-Class Coupe, power for the E V12 Coupe comes from a SV12 R Biturbo 800 V12 engine making 788-hp with a maximum torque of 1,047 lb-ft. The basis for this engine is the 12-cylinder twin-turbo engine from the latest Mercedes 600 models. Displacement of the engine was increased from 5.5 to 6.3 liters with the help of a special crankshaft, larger cylinder bore and correspondingly larger pistons. Both three-valve cylinder heads are optimized for mixture flow, and fitted with sport camshafts.

After all is said and done, the E V12 Coupe runs from 0-62 mph in just 3.7 seconds and 0-124 mph in 9.9 seconds. Without the limiter the E V12 Coupe is capable of a top speed in excess of 230 mph.

To keep the performance of the E V12 in check, Brabus also added some aerodynamic upgrades. Designers hit the wind tunnel to develop a body conversion kit made from high-strength, lightweight carbon fiber.

The 525-hp Audi R8 Spyder 5.2 FSI quattro is ready to hit showrooms this fall, with a price tag that will probably make your wallet lighter than it is now. Of course, you’ll enjoy such benefits of going from 0-62 mph in 4.1 seconds with the wind blowing through your hair.

But if you’re not into the brute force of the V10 you might want to wait until early 2011 when the V8 hits dealerships – not to mention it’ll cost around $30,000 less than its V10 sibling.

Nothing is official yet, but Straightline says that the Audi R8 Spyder 4.2 FSI V8 will be offered with either an automated manual R-tronic with paddle shifters or the standard 6-speed manual.

Seems likes Toyota isn’t the only one having recall issues. The 2010 BMW 550i Gran Turismo and the 2009-2010 BMW 7-Series are both being recalled by the German automaker, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.

It’s nothing as serious as Toyota’s pedal and brake issues so don’t get scared if you own either of the BMW vehicles.

Basically, the recall is due to a failure to comply with Federal Motor Vehicle Safety standard No. 110, “Tire Selection and Rims.” The tire pressure label on the vehicles incorrectly indicates the vehicle’s seating capacity as five passengers when its actual seating capacity is four. In the 7-Series the recall refers only to the luxury package that adds the option of “rear comfort seats,” which adds power seats and reduces rear-seating capacity from three to two.

Click here to price the 2010 BMW 5-Series Gran Turismo.

BMW hasn’t set a date on when the recall will begin but owners can call BMW at 800-831-1117 for more information.

With John Heinricy, the former head of GM’s performance division, behind the wheel, the 2009 Cadillac CTS-V handled all 12.9 miles of the Nurburgring Nordschleife racetrack and its 73-corners in 7:59.32. This is regarded by many to be the fastest lap-time ever run by a production-sedan. With this in mind, we were absolutely psyched to get behind the wheel of this high-performance animal for a full-week.

The CTS-V totally departs the Cadillac image of the soft-spoken, smooth riding luxury vehicle. In fact, it’s the total antithesis. For those who yearn for the Caddy of yesteryear; look elsewhere. If you’re the type of driver who lives for that feeling of a cars raw power turning your stomach upside down with every stomp of the gas pedal, you have met your match. The CTS-V is well-known as the BMW M5 Killer – a monumental feat for any American-made car; but it’s true. The CTS-V gives cars like the Mercedes-Benz E63 AMG and the Jaguar XJ-R a run for their money, and accelerates and brakes every bit better than the BMW M5.

We have no idea what the engineers at Cadillac were thinking – and frankly, we could care less and have no complaints as the CTS-V departures from what Cadillac is known for.

Exterior:

The exterior of the CTS-V builds upon the basic silhouette of the standard CTS, highlighting the aggressive stance and elegant details. The grille on the front is twice the size of that on the standard CTS and is finished in satin, but provides for a more functional and larger air intake. The 6.2L supercharged V8 would not fit in the engine compartment, save for the raised hood, and the aggressive front and rear fascias identify the vehicle as V-series. The 19-inch wheels only augment the aggressive stance on the road and along with the fenders make this car look ferocious.

The design elicits a bit of paradoxical emotion; at times it can seem a bit gaudy and overdone, but then again it will at other times feel as though it was a sleeper vehicle. At times you’ll wish it looked less like the standard CTS, and at others you will wish it looked less like it was something out of Cartier’s front-window.

As for exterior options buyers will be rather limited; you can upgrade the 19-inch painted aluminum wheels to high-polished ones for $800, or add the $900 UltraView power sunroof.

Interior:

Sitting inside the car is a pure treat to the senses with the abundant microfiber providing the sense of suede wrapping the steering-wheel and shifter. Why not use real suede you ask? Well, one it’s expensive to maintain and two when your palms get sweaty from aggressive driving, suede may not be the best option.

Our test-car also came with Recaro Performance Racing Seats, which replace the standard front bucket-seats for a mere $3,400. Again for those expecting a plush leather comfortable Caddy, the CTS-V isn’t your friend. The Recaro Racing Seats are very firm and will hurt your back end on longer trips.

Other touches that make you realize that you’re not sitting in ordinary CTS, but a car that is a CTS on steroids include exclusive details like a center stack trimmed in new Obsidian black material that also adorns the center console and trims the door and V-Series logo steering, seats and the speedometer.

The 40GB hard drive, advanced navigation system with ‘pop-up’ screen and 5.1 Bose Cabin Surround Sound system with 10-speakers and factory-installed Bluetooth functionality all come standard. In fact, the only interior options the consumer has with this car are the $3,400 Recaro seats, and $300 sueded rim steering wheel and shift-knob (which we advise against).

Performance:

Under the hood of the Cadillac CTS-V sits a detuned version of the same 6.2L LSA supercharged V8 engine found in the Corvette ZR-1 making 556-hp with a maximum torque of 551 lb-ft. The engine is the most powerful ever offered in Cadillac throughout its nearly 106-year history.

Mated to either a Tremec TR6060 6-speed manual with dual-disc clutch or a Hydra-Matic 6L90 6-speed automatic with paddle-shift control the CTS-V goes from 0-60 in what GM claims is less than 4 seconds, although we couldn’t do better than 4.2 seconds.

All that translates well on the straights, but the question on everybody’s mind is: Can the CTS-V handle? That’s the million-dollar question when it comes to many American performance vehicles as Americans are not known for well-performing vehicles. To put it plainly; the CTS-V handles like any German sports car, thanks to its fast-reacting suspension technology, Magnetic Ride Control. The system uses shocks controlled by what is called “magneto-rheological” technology. Assisting the system are electronic sensors at all four wheels that literally “read the road” every millisecond, making constant adjustments to damping to create virtually instantaneous and extremely precise control of body motions. The system shocks also enable a much broader range of damping control to optimize ride and handling for all driving conditions. Drivers also receive the additional benefit of choosing between two different suspension modes that tailor the suspension for a grand touring or more spirited performance driving; Tour and Sport.

Stopping the CTS-V is no problem thanks to Michelin and Brembo. The CTS-V has Brembo brakes on all four corners; six-piston calipers in the front and four-piston calipers in the rear. Slotted and vented rotors enable strong initial braking force while optimizing heat resistance and eliminating fade. Michelin also worked with GM engineers to develop its acclaimed Pilot Sport 2 (PS2) summer tire for CTS-V and its exclusive 19-inch alloy wheels.

Overall, the CTS-V offers performance that is equivalent to or better than other high-performance sedans in the segment. In fact, we’re going to go out on the edge and say that the performance of the CTS-V surpasses that of the Mercedes-Benz E 63 AMG and the BMW M5 – its two biggest rivals from Germany.

Overall:

Prices for the 2010 Cadillac CTS-V start at $60,720 ($61,545 when you include destination freight charges). Optioned out, the 2010 CTS-V fetches an MSRP of $64,345. Add a $2,600 gas guzzler tax and you’re looking at close to $67,000.

Compare those figures to the BMW M5 and all-new Mercedes-Benz E63 AMG and their staring price tags of $85,700 and $85,750 respectively, and the CTS-V is the clear favorite. Even if the price were to top $80,000, Motown would be the one to serve up the winner in this segment as far as overall value.

The Nissan Leaf is one of the most anticipated cars (or electric-cars) in 2010. Nissan recently said that it will start the reservation process in April with firm orders to begin August. Deliveries of the Leaf are scheduled to start in Dec. 2010. Exciting huh? Not if you’re Jerry Flint, a Forbes journalist who thinks that the Leaf is the “most daring gamble in the automobile world.”

Flint says that the Leaf is “more likely to be a sales failure than a sales success.” What’s Flint’s reasoning? He says that the Leaf ”doesn’t have the range of a conventional car, it doesn’t have the top speed, it costs more and it takes forever to refuel.”

In fact the only two benefits he points out for the fully-electric Leaf is that electricity costs less than gasoline and that Nissan and the entire automobile world will learn how electric-cars work in the real world.

Do you agree or disagree with Flint? Let us know in the comments section below.

Click here for more news on the Nissan Leaf.

Refresher: Power for the Nissan Leaf comes from a 107-hp electric-motor that runs on power supplied by lithium-ion cells. On a full-charge, the Nissan Leaf allows for a driving range of 100 miles with a top speed of 87 mph. A full charge takes up to 8 hours on a standard 200V outlet. Buyers can opt for the DC 50kW quick-charger, which recharges the battery up to 80 percent in under 30 minutes.

As mentioned before, tuners will have a strong presence at the 2010 Geneva Motor Show. German tuner Hamann will come to the show with its new Tycoon EVO M, which is based on the 555-hp BMW X6 M.

Besides the noticeable visual upgrades, this modified X6 M gets an ECU upgrade, stainless steel high performance exhaust system with metal catalyzers and other enhancements. That allows for a total output of 670-hp and 575 lb-ft of torque. 0-62 mph comes in just 4.2 seconds (standard X6 M does it in 4.5 seconds) with a top speed increase to 186 mph.

Press Release:

HAMANN-Motorsport, the renowned specialist for exquisite refinements of BMW-automobiles shows its latest developments on the 80th Geneva Motor Show. The masculine show-piece on the HAMANN exhibition stand with 200 square metres is the world premiere of the 670 hp/493kW strong and 300 km/h fast TYCOON EVO M based on the BMW X6 M.

The TYCOON EVO M – powerful appearance with striking design

Already the shape of the TYCOON EVO M with its impressive broad built gives a good hint of what is to be discovered. Mainly responsible for that are the front and the rear wing extensions made of light composite materials. These let the body expand by impressive 60 millimetres. Additionally, the HAMANN designers enhanced the sides with the newly designed side skirts. The distinctive hallmark of the front is the apron with the four striking LED daytime running lights. But the body set does not only emphasise the appearance, enlarged air inlets in the front and the carbon bonnet allow an optimised air ventilation of the engine compartment. At the X6 M rear, HAMANN also replaces the original skirt with an own development. This makes room for the earthy sounding sports exhaust system with the centrally positioned double end pipes. The rear view of the TYCOON EVO M is perfected with beautifully designed rear- and roof spoilers. All of those components produce a low-swirling airflow over the vehicle silhouette and render additional downthrust.

Rich performance enhancement thanks to optimised exhaust gas flow

In addition to the spectacular shape of the TYCOON EVO M the HAMANN engine department added a powerful performance enhancement for the serial engine. The most significant component for the performance enhancement and responsible for the dynamic and earthy sound of the TYCOON EVO M is the stainless steel high performance exhaust system with metal catalysers. A newly programmed map for the serial motronic completes the upgrade and suspending the speed limit of 250 km/h allows unrestrained driving pleasures.

As a result of the modifications, the X6 M now offers 670 hp / 493 kW at 6,000 r.p.m. and 780 Nm torque at 1,500 – 5,650 r.p.m. This is a surplus of 115 hp and 100 Nm compared to the serial version. Therefore, the all-wheel accelerated from 0 to 100 in only 4,2 seconds and reaches a maximum speed of 300 km/h.

Varying rim designs and sizes

Specially adjusted to the increased requirements of the TYCOON EVO M, the refining specialist presents varying wheel designs and sizes. A highlight concerning styling and technology is the rim model UNIQUE FORGED ANODIZED produced in most modern forged technology. The dynamic shape of the delicate, anodised cross spokes does not only lead to a dynamic and striking look, but also results in an even weight distribution and therefore guarantees higher bearing loads. HAMANN offers the 23-inch wheel in the dimensions 11.0 x 23 at the front- and 12.0 x 23 at the rear axle, combined with wheels measuring 315/25 R 23.
The light alloy wheels are especially emphasised with the HAMANN lowering kit. Progressively coiled springs at the front axle and a modification kit for the rear axle thereby lower the centre of gravity of the Sports Utility Vehicle by approx. 40 millimetres.

Most noble interior applications underline the motor sports atmosphere

In addition to the existing factory-provided interior, HAMANN offers accessories made of black-anodised aluminium in combination with carbon applications. Pedals and foot rest render motor sports air and perfectly match the 12-part HAMANN decoration set made of carbon fibre. An three-spoke sports steering wheel additionally render the TYCOON EVO M a dynamic overall appearance. For the luggage compartment in the back of the X6 M, HAMANN offers an elegant and practical boot mat with diamond-shaped decorations and an embroidered logo.
