A Volkswagen’s board member confirmed that the German automaker is working on a mini-MPV version of the 2010 Polo along with a “more macho” successor to the Beetle. Han Dieter Potsch said that a “mini-MPV is in an area we have under active consideration. In terms of downsizing, people will not stick to one type of small car or another.”

Sources told AutoCar that many brands struggle with mini-MPVs but when they are planned and executed properly, “they can be complementary.”

Potsch said that Volkswagen has been stepping up R&D efforts to make sure it is not in a troublesome position when the market starts to recover.

As for the “macho Beetle,” sources told AutoCar that the car will be a lot less feminine than before and will be more masculine so guys are interested in buying it.

Press Release:

Dual World Premiere at Wörthersee:
Volkswagen presents concepts of the Golf GTI and new Polo

Golf GTI “Wörthersee 09″: Fire-red play-mobile with high-end interior

Polo “Wörthersee 09″: First look at potential sport versions

20 May 2009 – The Golf GTI and the new Polo are Volkswagen highlights this spring. Both are launching right now, and both are successors to absolute bestsellers. Both are prime examples of affordable automotive dreams. The GTI for sure, because it is the icon among compact sports cars. And the Polo, because it is small but not meager. That is why these cars have what is possibly the biggest active fan club in the world. Once a year they meet at Wörthersee. This time Volkswagen has brought along two sensational concept cars of the new bestsellers: special “Wörthersee 09″ editions of the Golf GTI and Polo.

Golf GTI “Wörthersee 09″: Maxed out for fan expectations

It is fire-red and a real eyecatcher. Inside and out, the Golf GTI “Wörthersee 09″ combines charming and unique visual looks with an even higher level of performance – it embodies precisely those elements that have always excited genuine GTI fans. Consider the exterior paint, for example. It shimmers in the special glowing red color “Firespark Metallic”, which is repeated as a fine trim line on the high-gloss black 19-inch alloy spoke wheels and in the classic GTI stripes of the radiator grille screen. Other very distinctive body details: an entirely new smoked LED taillight design; its unmistakable graphic design from the rear adds to the Golf GTI concept car’s independent character.

Full of style, the interior of the two-door GTI is inviting too. Initial eyecatchers: high-end aluminum tread plates with “GTI Wörthersee 09″ signature. The next special feature: trim in brushed aluminum and glossy black painted frames around the air vents. The floor mats have red borders as well. All of this makes an exceptionally refined impression and calls attention to the sporty talent of the legendary “GTI” even more.

The newly designed sport comfort seats with their integrated head restraints are an absolute interior highlight. They excite with innovative cover materials and a fresh color composition. This includes black nappa for the outer surfaces and flash red nappa for the seat side supports, bordered by light “Berry White” leather piping. The seat center panels are made of Hexagon; one feature of this high-tech material, which is so pleasant to the touch: its exceptional breathing properties.

GTI drivers in particular know that form follows function. The “Wörthersee 09″ Edition not only pleases with its tasteful style, it was also intensified technically in the direction of performance. The lowered sport chassis enables maximum curve speeds. And the acoustics is not short-changed either: the new sport exhaust system provides for an extra measure of dynamic sound. This will be music to the ears of genuine GTI fans.

When it comes to the turbo engine, the GTI “Wörthersee 09″ relies on the new 2.0-liter TSI with 155 kW / 210 PS. This gives the concept car a top speed of 238 km/h and 6.9 second acceleration to 100 km/h.

Polo “Wörthersee 09″: Sporty vision in red and black

In Austria, Volkswagen is already presenting a study that is based on the new Polo – the “Wörthersee 09″ concept car. Visually, this study offers an initial impression of how a sport version of the new compact might look. It should be noted that it was always part of the successful model series as the Polo GT, Polo G40 or Polo GTI. From a purely technical perspective, the display piece is based on the 1.4-liter MPI version engine with 63 kW / 86 PS. Its unique aspects are to be found in the details:

Just like the Golf GTI Edition, this Polo stands out with its extroverted “Flash Red” body color. In addition, two black rally stripes command attention; they extend over the front end, the roof and back to the rear. The sporty, generously sized alloy wheels are the last detail. The black 18-inchers in “Budapest” styling are making their appearance with polished spokes; they generously fill out the wheel housings of the lowered chassis of the new bestseller – more than 13,000 orders have been received, even before its market launch. The black versus red contrast can be seen as a defining, excitement generating theme. The radiator grille screen, mirror caps, backdrop of the headlights and insert in the lower bumper known as the “buckle” all offer a dark contrast. And the sport exhaust system pleases with its optimized sound.

Premium black also characterizes the interior. It takes a path from the roofliner over the air vents – each with a high-gloss finish – the steering wheel accents and radio panel down to the very distinctive front seats. They are made of very high-end materials. Black nappa leather trims the outer surfaces and the center seat panels where they are offset by horizontal black stripes in the microfiber “San Remo”. The seat’s lateral supports have an arc-shaped striped design which – viewed from outside to inside – is composed of nappa leather, flash-red nappa leather piping, the white leather “Berry White” and black leather. The aluminum tread plates are also a custom feature. Similar to the Golf GTI concept car, they bear the signature “Polo Wörthersee 09″. Red seams also enhance the leatherwork on the parking brake handle, gearshift grip, steering wheel and door trim.

Perfection in the details: new GTI products from Volkswagen Accessories

Volkswagen Accessories will also be astonishing visitors with attractive new products on the occasion of the GTI Meet at Wörthersee. Two innovations stand out: the “Bobsy G2-3 pro GTI-Design” child seat – covered with the original material of the GTI seats (“Jacky” pattern) – gives fans of the sports car icon the option of taking their progeny along with them in the GTI, not only safely but in genuine style. Thanks to its adjustable-width seat cushion and sleeping support, it is ideal for children between three and twelve years old (15 to 36 kilogram body weight). The seatbelt is routed snugly to the body and offers optimal protection. The special head section, lateral support panels that extend far forward and full coverage of the shoulder area guarantee a high level of comfort and safety in case of a side crash.

Also new is the GTI cell phone. The SonyEricsson T700 GTI Edition cell phone is a perfect match for the legendary model from Wolfsburg when it comes to sportiness and exclusivity. Along with the display logo and brushed aluminum surface, all menuing is styled after GTI design. There is even a special GTI sound ringtone. And the integrated 3.2 megapixel camera with 3X digital zoom is ideal for capturing the most beautiful images of the GTI-Meet at Wörthersee for eternity on its 25-MB memory card.

In a statement released yesterday, Volkswagen said that it has received roughly 13,000 orders for the new 2010 Volkswagen Polo before its market launch. Demand for small cars like the Polo have increased significantly ever since the government has launched its scrappage program for old clunkers with $3,402 cash back.

Sales of the 2010 Volkswagen Polo will begin in the last week of June in Germany. Two weeks after that, it will go on sale across mainland Europe.

The 2010 Volkswagen Polo will be offered with seven different engine choices – five of which are new. A total of four gasoline engines and three diesel options will be offered with outputs ranging from 60-hp to 105-hp.

Press Release:

Up to 20 percent better fuel economy points the way to the future
Wolfsburg / Sardinia, 11 May 2009 – Polo brings new dimension of quality to the supermini class

Five new engines; TSI and Common Rail TDI in the Polo for the first time

3.6 liter fuel consumption and 96 g/km CO2 set new benchmark for five-seaters

ESP plus Hill Hold Control are standard; significantly improved crash properties

* At the Geneva Motor Show at the beginning of March, the Polo debuted with a completely new look and technology. After its celebrated world premiere, this latest Volkswagen is now entering the market. Prof. Dr. Martin Winterkorn: “The new Polo fulfills the highest standards of the automotive present and goes a step further. Its extremely efficient drive technologies, best possible active and passive safety systems, a level of quality never before attained in this car class and impressive design all set new benchmarks in the fifth generation of this bestseller that has sold over 10.6 million units.” The Chairman of the Board of Management of the Volkswagen Group continues: “The Polo is clearly the right car at the right time, and that is born out by the latest advance sales figures. Here we have created a Volkswagen that takes the unparalleled success of the Golf concept and effectively transfers it to an independent segment – the Polo class.”

* “It is already clear that the Polo will redefine the benchmarks in its class, especially when it comes to preserving natural resources,” says Dr. Ulrich Hackenberg, Member of the Board of Management, Volkswagen Brand, and responsible for technical development. Dr. Hackenberg continues: “As a 90-PS TDI with a BlueMotionTechnology package, the new Polo moves with 3.6 liter fuel consumption. Even our new 105-PS TSI only consumes 5.5 liters per 100 kilometers. We have succeeded in improving fuel economy between 8 and 20 percent over the entire gasoline engine lineup, and between 5 and 15 percent among the diesels. And that is really good.”

* Another key fact: No other car in its class has such a mature and high-end image as the new Polo. Comfort, quality and safety have all taken a considerable leap forward. One example: among other things, the Polo was specifically designed to attain the recently established, stricter and more comprehensive, 5-star EuroNCAP rating. The greater structural rigidity of the Polo’s bodyshell contributes to these results. In the footwell area alone, intrusion – related to the car body’s resistance to deformation in a frontal crash – was lowered by 50 percent! In the case of a side impact, the intrusion value was reduced by 20 percent.
Standard equipment for safety

* In addition, the European version of the Polo now being presented is equipped with standard ESP electronic stabilization program with Hill Hold Control, and it has a highly effective network of airbags on board, including combined head-thorax airbags (integrated in the front seatbacks), belt tensioners and belt force limiters plus seatbelt warning indicator and head restraints that counteract the risk of whiplash injury (both front seats), three rear head restraints and Isofix preparation for child seats.

* Volkswagen has rearranged the line structure of its equipment lines since the previous model: “Trendline” still represents the entry-level variant, and “Comfortline” still refers to the mid equipment level. New to the lineup – and bringing the Polo in line with the Golf here – is the top version called “Highline”. Convenience features that are already standard features of the Polo Trendline include: electro-hydraulic power steering, power windows in front, central locking, cargo area lighting and tie-down points, warning buzzer if lights are left on, height adjustment for driver’s seat, illuminated make-up mirrors in the sun visors and green tinted windows. Meanwhile, “Titanium black” trim and “Metric” fabric give the interior a perceptibly high-end ambiance.
Individually combinable high-tech features

* Options that Polo drivers will be able to order on their new Volkswagen include static turning lights integrated in the front fog lights, daytime running lights (from “Comfortline” up), side curtain airbags (head airbag system for front and rear passengers), radio and radio-navigation systems and an integrated hands-free telephone system. A panorama sunroof and bi-xenon headlights will follow at a later time.
Weight down, fuel consumption down

* Despite significant improvements in all aspects of the car, the Polo’s body weight has been reduced by 7.5 percent. Introduction of new TDI and TSI engines, and the 7-speed dual clutch transmission (DSG), has resulted – as described by Dr. Hackenberg – in considerable improvement in fuel economy and reduced emissions over a wide range of engine power outputs. An excellent example here is the new 1.2 TSI. This turbo-charged four-cylinder direct injection gasoline engine produces 77 kW / 105 PS, yet it consumes just 5.5 liters of fuel per 100 kilometers (129 g/km CO2); this is 20 percent less than on the equivalent model of the previous generation!
Five new engines for the Polo

* In total, seven different engines will be offered on the new Polo in its first year – four gasoline and three diesel – spanning a power range from 44 kW / 60 PS to 77 kW / 105 PS. Five of these engines are entirely new or are being used for the first time in the Polo.

* The new engines include all three TDIs (turbo-diesel direct-injection); thanks to common rail technology implemented for the first time in the Polo, these engines are both efficient and refined. The potential in the TDI engines is clearly evident in the example of the Polo 1.6 TDI with 66 kW / 90 PS: when combined with a “BlueMotion Technology package”, its average fuel consumption of 3.6 liters per 100 kilometers and 96 g/km CO2 makes it the most fuel efficient and lowest emitting five-seater diesel in the world. The “BlueMotion Technology package” and 90-PS TDI may be ordered on the “Comfortline” and “Highline” equipment versions.
Market launch starts at end of June

* Production of the five-door Polo already started at the end of March. This will be followed, starting in the last week in June, by the market launch of the visually and technically advanced new edition of the million unit bestseller in Germany. Just two weeks later, thanks to an ambitious logistics plan, Volkswagen will begin selling the car across mainland Europe, and soon Polo engines will be revving up across all continents.
The Polo on the iPod and iPhone

* Volkswagen is very much targeting the generation of “mobile gamers” with the new Polo: in parallel to the world premiere at the Geneva International Motor Show, a Polo racing game for iPhone and iPod touch was launched on March 3, 2009 in Apple App Stores. After just two weeks of this innovative type of marketing, Volkswagen rocketed to number 1 on download charts in 39 countries and even climbed into the top ten on US download charts. So, along with traditional print advertising and media spots, in parallel Volkswagen is counting on interactivity via iPhone and iPod touch for the new Polo. And with success: more than 1.4 million downloads in the Apple App Store within four weeks are proof of the enthusiastic wave that the new Polo racing game “Volkswagen Polo Challenge” has triggered around the globe.

* The “Volkswagen Polo Challenge” is an interactive racing game that takes place in brilliant 3D quality on eight highly detailed and accurately reproduced race courses. In addition, the download contains key information on the new Polo. Those who would also like to try out the Polo in reality can look up the nearest Volkswagen dealer within the game and be navigated there.

When the Volkswagen Polo comes to the United States in 2011, it will look a little different than its European cousin. Volkswagen Group of America CEO Stefan Jacoby says that the U.S. market will get a sedan version of the Polo that will be smaller than the Jetta and a 4-door hatchback that is roomier than the one shown at the 2009 Geneva Motor Show.

Jacoby told Automotive News that both models will be designed especially for the United States market. Even though the new-generation Polo that was unveiled in Geneva is larger than its predecessor, it is still too small for the fat North American market.

Jacoby said that the U.S. version of the Polo will be built on a longer wheelbase and will be taller than the European model.

“…it’s more like a Honda Fit,” said Jacoby. He said that the North American market version will be priced between 13,000 and $15,000.

Yesterday we saw all the details on the new 2010 Volkswagen Polo. Today at the 2009 Geneva Motor Show, Volkswagen unveiled a concept based on the 2010 Polo – the Polo BlueMotion Concept.

Power comes from a 1.2L TDI 3-cylinder common rail diesel engine that makes a total of 75-hp. Coupled with a range of BlueMotion Technologies, the Polo BlueMotion returns an estimated fuel-economy of 71 mpg (U.S.) with CO2 emissions of just 87 g/km.

But that’s not all. Along with being fuel-efficient under the hood, the Volkswagen Polo BlueMotion Concept gets modifications to its body to increase fuel-savings. The German automaker modified the front-end of the 2010 Polo, dropped it by 10 millimeters, optimized the under body and low rolling resistance tires on the 15-inch alloy wheels.

The Volkswagen Polo BlueMotion Concept is expected to enter production in 2010.

Press Release:

World Premiere at the 2009 Geneva Motor Show
3.3 liter fuel consumption makes this Polo one of the most economical cars in the world

New 1.2 liter TDI engine reduces Polo”s CO2 emissions to just 87 g/km

Market launch of the most fuel efficient Polo of all times expected in 2010
Wolfsburg / Geneva, 03 March 2009 – It is still a concept ““ the most fuel efficient five-seater in the world. Its name: Polo BlueMotion. Fuel consumption: 3.3 liters CO2 emissions: just 87 g/km! Likelihood of going into production: extremely high! However, before a potential production launch, development must be completed on the brand new 1.2 liter TDI with common rail injection. And that is precisely what the team led by Development Chief Dr. Ulrich Hackenberg is working on with great emphasis. “I anticipate,” says Dr. Hackenberg, “that we will be able to go into production in February 2010. Meeting this schedule will be extremely demanding. Yet the engine and other systems of the Polo BlueMotion are already operating with such promising performance that we are on course to meet our goal.”

The “other systems” to which he refers include an automatic start-stop system and regenerative braking. These two technologies alone reduce fuel consumption of the 55 kW / 75 PS three-cylinder direct-injection diesel by up to 0.2 liters per 100 kilometers.

But that is not all that is being done. On the Polo BlueMotion concept car, which weighs in at just 1,080 kilograms, Volkswagen is calling upon an entire array of efficiency measures, including an aerodynamic package for the body that is lowered by 10 millimeters (including modified front end), an aerodynamically optimized underbody and low rolling resistance tires on 15-inch alloy wheels. Altogether, these modifications yield fuel savings totaling 0.8 liters. This has lowered CO2 emissions by about 20 percent.

Other features being presented on the Polo BlueMotion concept car at the 2009 Geneva Motor Show include a custom interior with “Power On” trim, and a display for indicating upshifting and tire pressure. The design study is painted in the new exterior color “Emotion blue”.

Start-stop system in detail

Especially worthwhile is a look at the fully intuitive operation of the start-stop system. As the driver approaches a red stop light in the Polo BlueMotion concept car, he or she applies the brakes to bring the vehicle to a stop, shifts into neutral (which should be standard practice with a conventional car) and takes his or her foot off the clutch. This shuts off the engine momentarily. A “Start Stop” message now appears in the multifunctional display. As soon as the traffic light turns green again, the driver fully depresses the clutch, the engine starts, the “Start Stop” message disappears, and the driver puts the car back in gear and resumes driving.

Regenerative braking in detail

Regenerative braking helps to recover energy that would otherwise be lost in driving in as efficient a way as possible. During deceleration and braking phases of the Polo BlueMotion concept car ““ i.e. whenever the driver simply releases the accelerator pedal or intentionally brakes ““ the alternator”s charging voltage is elevated, which converts the car”s kinetic energy into electrical energy to charge the battery.

Thanks to alternator control ““ which regulates the alternator as a function of engine efficiency for optimal battery charging ““ it is possible to lower alternator voltage at other times, e.g. during acceleration or driving at a constant speed. It is even possible to switch off the alternator entirely. This reduces engine load and improves fuel economy. Special software for energy management and modified engine controller software are needed to utilize regeneration.

The new umbrella brand BlueMotionTechnologies

Volkswagen is presenting the Polo concept car in Geneva under the new umbrella brand “BlueMotionTechnologies”. This label covers all production-mature or near-production technologies and products that significantly reduce fuel consumption and CO2 emissions. These are developments such as the new start-stop system and regenerative braking implemented on the Polo BlueMotion concept, as well as the highly innovative SCR catalytic converter on the Passat CC BlueTDI that is also appearing for the first time in Geneva. However, they also include the NOx storage catalytic converter that has already been successfully introduced in the USA, electric and hybrid drive systems, and innovative engine systems like those in the Touran TSI EcoFuel which are debuting at the 2009 Geneva Motor Show. A launching point for these extremely fuel efficient and low-emission products was the Polo BlueMotion, which in 2006 was the first five-seater to bring fuel consumption down to 3.8 liters per 100 kilometers. The Polo BlueMotion concept car now surpasses this record value by 0.5 liters.

The range of BlueMotion models already available today includes the Golf series, Jetta, Caddy, Touran, Sharan, and the Passat and Passat Wagon. A recent survey by the organization “Deutsche Automobil Treuhand DAT”, the renowned and world”s oldest institution for automotive market research, demonstrates just how successful the BlueMotion label has become today. In a representative survey, the highly regarded DAT found that 85 percent of German car drivers are familiar with the BlueMotion label. The next best competitor only attained a recognition level of 36 percent. This makes BlueMotion the number 1 among automotive environmental labels.

Press Release:

The new Polo is one of the safest cars worldwide;
Polo”s TDI and TSI engines noticeably reduce fuel costs

Wolfsburg / Geneva, 02 March 2009 – No other car in this class has such a mature and high-end image as the new Polo. Comfort, quality and safety have all taken a considerable leap forward. One example: the Polo was specifically designed to attain the recently established, stricter and more comprehensive, 5-star EuroNCAP rating. The higher structural rigidity of the Polo”s bodyshell contributes to these results. In the footwell area alone, intrusion ““ related to the car body”s deformation strength in a frontal crash ““ was lowered by 50 percent! In the case of a side impact, the intrusion value was reduced by 20 percent.

Standard equipment for safety

In addition, the European version of the Polo now being presented is equipped with standard ESP electronic stabilization program with Hill Hold Control, and it has a highly effective network of airbags on board, including combined head-thorax airbags (integrated in the front seatbacks), belt tensioners and belt force limiters plus seatbelt warning indicator and head restraints that counteract the risk of whiplash injury (both front seats), three rear head restraints and Isofix child seat preparation.

Weight down, fuel consumption down

Despite significant improvements in all aspects of the car, it was possible to reduce the Polo”s body weight by 7.5 percent. The introduction of new TDI and TSI engines, as well as the 7-speed dual clutch transmission (DSG), has resulted in considerably reduced fuel consumption and emissions over a wide range of engine power outputs. An excellent example here is the new 1.2 TSI. This turbo-charged four-cylinder direct injection gasoline engine produces 77 kW / 105 PS, yet it consumes just 5.5 liters of fuel per 100 kilometers (129 g/km CO2); this is 19 percent less than on the equivalent model of the previous generation!

In total, seven different engines will be offered on the new Polo in its first year ““ four gasoline and three diesel ““ spanning a power range from 44 kW / 60 PS to 77 kW / 105 PS. Five of these engines are entirely new or are being used for the first time in the Polo.

The new engines include all three TDIs (turbo-diesel direct-injection); thanks to the implementation for the first time of common rail technology in the Polo, these engines are both efficient and refined. The potential in the new TDI engines is clearly evident in the example of the Polo 1.6 TDI with 66 kW / 90 PS: when combined with a “BlueMotion package”, its average fuel consumption of 3.8 liters per 100 kilometers and 96 g/km CO2 makes it the most fuel efficient and lowest emitting five-seater diesel in the world. The “BlueMotion package” may be combined with any of the three equipment lines developed for the Polo. Available for selection here are the base version “Trendline”, the mid-level “Comfortline” and the top of the line “Highline”.

Individually combinable high-tech features
