Hybrid drivers get more traffic tickets than gasoline-powered car drivers: According to a study conducted by California-based Quality Planning Corporation, drivers of hybrid vehicles are more likely to get a traffic ticked or into a collision than gasoline powered vehicles. Seems odd right? But it makes a little sense when you look at the statistics side of it. Quality Planning Corporation says that most hybrid drivers live in urban settings with more traffic. The firm also said that hybrid owners drive 25 percent more than gasoline powered car owners since they are a little too mpg happy. – AllCarsElectric

It’s that time of the day again – you know the time where we gather up some random findings into one post. So here it goes.

Transform your 2010 Chevrolet Camaro into KITT: When the new Knight Rider TV series (which has fortunately been cancelled) made its debut with the Shelby GT500KR, many Camaro fans were disappointed that the Mustang was picked over their favorite Chevy muscle car. So much so that they decided to create their own 64 LED KITT scanner that can be hard-wired to the battery of the 2010 Camaro. Each kit runs for about $160, and you can purchase it from the company’s Web site here. Check out the video below to see how it’ll look in the end - Camaro5

2010 Toyota Prius sales reach 180,000 in Japan: It seems like Toyota is all about providing us with updates on how its 2010 Prius is selling. Latest word has it that Toyota got 180,000 orders for the new Prius hybrid in Japan in just a month. Congrats to the ‘10 Prius. – MSNBC

Press car of the week: We just took delivery of the 2009 Nissan Cube. Look out for a full review coming soon. Let us know what you’d like to know about the car in the comments section below. Any questions? Feel free to ask us and we’ll address them in our review.

The 2010 Toyota Prius has started taking the world by storm. The third-generation of the popular Toyota hybrid was the best-selling model in Japan during the month of May and recent reports said there is a waiting list to get the 2010 model in the United States.

With that in mind, Toyota will keep pushing the successful 1.8L Atkinson 4-cylinder engine that makes 98-hp and helps the 2010 Prius return a combined fuel-economy of 50 mpg. Toyota has denied reports of a diesel version of the Prius – at least for the foreseeable future.

While other brands have already adopted diesel hybrids, Toyota’s R&D chief Tasatami Takimoto said that a diesel-powered Prius will take “many more years.” Takimoto says the main issue is cost.

“Actually, we already make a diesel hybrid truck in Japan,” he told Autocar. “But in order to mass-market diesel hybrids we need to make the exhaust emissions much cleaner, and that requires development.”

In the meantime Toyota is moving forward with work on a plug-in hybrid version of the 2010 Prius. It is expected to debut in Japan before the end of the year. It aims to sell 200 plug-in Priuses in Japan, and 300 in the U.S. and Europe.

Nonetheless, despite strong-Prius sales, Toyota still expects red-ink this year. The company reported in May that it expects global sales to fall 14 percent in the year to March 2010.

“I feel very relieved and excited that they are selling well,” said Akihiko Otsuka, chief engineer of the Prius. “I expect sales to push up the entire car market. I am not pessimistic about the future.”

Honda said earlier this morning that it may have difficulty reaching its annual target for the 2010 Honda Insight.

For the month of May, Toyota’s 2010 Prius sales beat the Insight, becoming the best-selling car in Japan for the month.

“I think a green car tax break and other incentives helped the sales performance (of the Prius) quite a bit,” Akihiko Otsuka, chief engineer for the new Prius, told reporters.

The 2010 Toyota Prius went on sale on May 18 and was priced about $3,000 less than the outgoing model. Toyota says there were more than 80,000 advance orders for the third-generation model. Towards the end of May, Toyota announced that it will be increasing production of the 2010 Prius to meet better-than-expected demand.

We’re guessing all the Japanese folks listened to Clarkson when he called the Honda Insight ‘Biblically terrible.’ Nonetheless, Honda is planning to have four gasoline-electric hybrids on the road by 2012 including the CR-Z hybrid and a Fit hybrid.

Toyota said today that it is considering revving up production of its 2010 Prius to meet better-than-expected demand, a move similar to the one Honda made when it launched its 2010 Insight hybrid in February.

“We are considering steps to increase production to meet demand,” Toyota spokesman Paul Nolasco said.

While this is good news for treehuggers or those that hate the Honda Insight, the news is a sigh of relief for workers involved with manufacturing Toyota vehicles. Toyota was among the first Japanese automakers to halt production earlier this year as demand was hit by the global financial crisis.

Toyota has confirmed that it has received over 80,000 orders for the 2010 Prius, which it rolled out earlier this month. The Japanese automaker declined to comment on reports that the number had jumped to 110,000.

The 2010 Toyota Prius is on sale no with prices starting at $21,750.

The 2010 Honda Insight is the first of four gasoline-electric hybrids Honda has planned to bring to the roads by 2012. Early next year, Honda will unveil the production version of the much-anticipated CR-Z sports hybrid. That will be followed by a hybrid version of the Fit and the next-generation Civic Hybrid.

According to Japan’s Nikkei business daily, the Honda Fit subcompact hybrid will arrive in the autumn of 2010 followed by the next Civic Hybrid.

The 2010 Honda Insight hybrid, which is priced at 1.89 million yen ($19,960 USD), became the first hybrid ever to top the best-seller list in Japan in April 2009. Without citing any sources, Nikkei said that the Honda Fit Hybrid will carry a price tag of 1.5 million yen ($15,800 USD). Expected annual sales are estimated at over 50,000 units.

Spokeswoman Akemi Ando said that Honda has yet to decide on the schedule, price or sales target for the Fit Hybrid.

At this point, you guys are probably wondering what Toyota has up their sleeve to compete with the Honda Fit hybrid. As Toyota continues to fight the 2010 Honda Insight with the 2010 Toyota Prius, Toyota is also working on a hybrid version of the Yaris.

Wondering where Toyota’s future design theme is headed? Just take a look at the 2010 Toyota Prius. According to Toyota’s global design chief Wahei Hirai, the third-generation Prius provides a look at the futuristic styling and carries many new design elements that will be adopted on upcoming models.

Hirai says to look out for sharply creased corners, a lowered grille, a more forward placement of the Toyota badge and styling that calls for “free-form geometrics.”

“Prius is a showcase. We can try many design cues here first,” Hirai told Automotive News at Toyota’s design studio. “This has to be symbolic.”

What are your thoughts? Should Toyota follow the design theme of the 2010 Toyota Prius for future models? Have you say in the poll below.

Here we are, the first Miscellaneous Thoughts for the week of Monday, May 18, 2009. Today, you can watch hot chicks (literally hot chicks) wash the Ford Fiesta, learn about the ‘Great Ethanol Scam,’ and read just how many 2010 Toyota Priuses have been sold before the hybrid goes on sale at dealerships.

The Great Ethanol Scam: Not only is ethanol not receiving enough attention as a alternative fuel-source for gasoline, it is destroying engines. – BusinessWeek

Toyota gets 80,000 pre-orders for the 2010 Prius: Last week we reported that Toyota has received a total of 75,000 orders for the 2010 Prius before it went on sale in Japan. Well, the 2010 Prius goes on sale in Japan today, and Toyota said that it has received 80,000 pre-sale orders for the third-generation of its popular hybrid. – Reuters

Hot chicks wash the 2010 Toyota Prius: As the Ford Fiesta Movement moves along, Fiesta agents have come up with creative ways to use the social media to spread the word about Ford’s brand-new hatchback. Here someone did the obvious and got a bunch of hot chicks to wash the 2010 Ford Fiesta. – YouTube (via Jalopnik)

Press Release:

Toyota Reveals Third-Generation Prius Marketing Campaign: “Harmony Between Man, Nature And Machine”

Torrance, Calif., May 11, 2009 – Toyota Motor Sales (TMS), USA, Inc., along with its advertising agency Saatchi & Saatchi LA, today announced the official launch of its marketing campaign for the all-new 2010 Prius – “Harmony Between Man, Nature and Machine.”

This fully integrated marketing effort explains how consumers can get virtually everything they want for themselves in a car – advanced technology, extra power, space, safety and 50 miles per gallon – all while providing what nature craves most: fewer smog-forming emissions. The campaign emphasizes that, for the first time, a car company has struck a balance between the needs of man and nature – by building the third-generation Prius.

The third-generation Prius campaign reaches consumers where they live with
real-world installations, deep social networking and digital programs, and traditional media including television commercials that employ a visual technique never before seen in the U.S.

Harmony Installations

To reach potential Prius buyers, Toyota is incorporating useful tools to improve their everyday lives. Harmony Installations will bring to life the idea of harmony between man, nature and machine in cities across America:

- Oversized solar flower sculptures will be placed in highly interactive areas such as public parks. These sculptures, which include free Wi-Fi access, will serve as seating environments and charging stations for people to recharge their spirits as well as their mobile phones and laptops.

- Solar ventilation bus shelters will demonstrate how solar panels on Prius’ available Solar Roof are designed to help cool the parked vehicle by providing a comfortable space for bus riders.

The flower sculptures and solar ventilation bus shelters will debut in early July and travel to a half-dozen large cities across the country over the summer and early fall. In addition, with Harmony “Floralscapes,” Prius will be “in full bloom” alongside select California highways, with living billboards made of flowers, a first in the U.S.

“Prius has emerged as a symbol of our time, empowering people to see how each individual can play a role in making the world a little bit better,” said Kim McCullough, corporate manager of marketing communications for TMS. “To launch the third-generation Prius, we’re bringing Prius’ eco-friendly technologies and optimistic spirit to the people where they live, work and play.”

Social Media

The Prius customer is looking for community and inspiration online as well as offline. For the third-generation Prius launch, Toyota is making an unprecedented foray into social networking with deep programs on Facebook, Twitter and HowStuffWorks. All of the social media sites are integrated with each other and with multiple other touch points of the campaign. Toyota will be rolling out useful tools, such as a carbon emissions calculator, on these social networking applications over the coming months, with additional announcements to follow.

The digital portion of the third-generation Prius campaign began with a series of highly successful events earlier this year, where Toyota invited online mavens to be the first to experience the new vehicle. Toyota will kick off the public digital campaign with MSN and Yahoo homepage takeovers on May 28 and June 15, respectively. The digital campaign includes a Prius experience site on http://www.toyota.com/, a mobile Web site, innovative banners, site sponsorships and custom programs. A mobile campaign will begin this summer.

Traditional Media

The TV, print and outdoor advertising forge new visual ground for Toyota and establish an instantly recognizable Prius identity. The TV spots are directed by Hideaki Hosono, known as “Mr. Hide” (pronounced hee-day), represented by production company the Sweet Shop. They employ a cinematic technique to depict the harmony between man, nature and machine. A utopian landscape is made entirely out of people – the sun, clouds and even blades of grass are depicted by people moving in unison. The third-generation Prius commercials are Mr. Hide’s first for the U.S. market. His latest feature film, Donju, will be exhibited at the Cannes Film Festival and has its worldwide premiere in Tokyo this week.

The first TV spot from the campaign, “Harmony,” will premiere during the season finale of Castle on ABC, Monday, May 11, followed by presence in multiple season finales including Lost on ABC and 30 Rock on NBC. Prius will have cable presence on a number of networks including Discovery, Bravo, TNT, TBS and USA. Print media highlights include thought-leader outlets such as Fast Company, Wired, TIME and The Week, along with mass-reach publications such as Better Homes and Gardens, People and Entertainment Weekly. Prius will also make an appearance at popular events including the Summer Dew Tour, a number of music festivals and the Life Time Fitness Series Race to the Toyota Cup triathlons.

There have been three generations of Prius in the U.S. and Saatchi LA has launched them all, starting with the first-generation Prius in 2000. This is Saatchi LA Executive Creative Director Mike McKay’s first campaign on behalf of Toyota.

“With the new Prius, Toyota has improved upon an icon. They’ve added horsepower while increasing fuel economy and lowering emissions,” said McKay. “Saatchi LA is taking that icon to the masses and advancing the idea of harmony between man, nature and machine. We’re doing it in ways that are as innovative as the Prius itself.”

Press Release:

Toyota Announces Prices for 2010 Prius

TORRANCE, Calif., April 21, 2009 – - Toyota Motor Sales (TMS), U.S.A., Inc., announced manufacturer’s suggested retail prices (MSRP) today for the all-new 2010 Prius midsize hybrid, scheduled to go on sale beginning in late May at Toyota dealers nationwide.

The third-generation Prius will be available in one grade with a starting MSRP of $21,000. The Prius will be offered with five levels of popular standard equipment combinations.

“The 2010 Prius delivers outstanding mileage, performance and advanced technology at a great price,” said Bob Carter, group vice president and general manager of the Toyota Division.

Carter sees the most popular model starting at an MSRP of $22,000, equipped with a high level of standard features, “This model provides more than $2,000 added value, including the features most buyers want, at the same price as the current base model” he said.

A new base model with a lower level of standard equipment is scheduled to be available later this year. It is designed to appeal to the most cost-conscious businesses and consumers.

Celebrated as the benchmark for cars of the future, the Prius has delivered superior fuel economy and ultra-low emissions to more than 1.2 million owners worldwide for over 10 years. When it goes on sale, the 2010 Toyota Prius will once again set new standards for innovative hybrid design and technology, raising its level of convenience features and performance to new heights, including EPA fuel economy estimates of 51 mpg city, 48 mpg highway and 50 mpg combined (EPA MPG estimates, actual mileage will vary).

The third-generation 2010 Prius will offer enhanced performance and innovative design features. It will be quieter, roomier, and equipped with advanced standard and available features such as four driving modes, steering wheel touch controls that display on the instrument panel, a moonroof with solar panels, and Intelligent Parking Assist (IPA).

The Prius is equipped with Toyota’s industry-leading Hybrid Synergy Drive and certified as an Advanced Technology Partial Zero Emissions Vehicle (AT-PZEV), emitting over 70 percent fewer smog-forming emissions than the average new vehicle. A larger and more powerful yet more efficient 1.8-liter Atkinson-cycle, four-cylinder engine produces 98 horsepower at 5,200 rpm. Together with its electric motor the hybrid system in the new Prius will generate a combined net horsepower of 134, an increase of 24 horsepower over the previous generation.

All Prius models offer Toyota’s Star Safety SystemTM as standard equipment, which includes enhanced Vehicle Stability Control (VSC) and Traction Control (TRAC) Systems, Anti-lock Brake System (ABS) with Electronic Brake Force Distribution (EBD) and Brake Assist (BA). Other standard features include electric power steering and four-wheel disc brakes.

Starting fall 2009, select Prius models will include Toyota’s all-new telematics service, Safety ConnectTM, which will offer four safety and security features: Automatic Collision Notification, Stolen Vehicle Location, Emergency Assistance Button (SOS), and Roadside Assistance. Safety Connect will be available by subscription, with an included one-year trial subscription.

Adding to the appeal of Prius is an additional array of standard convenience features on most models that include automatic air conditioning equipped with an electric air compressor; AM/FM/MP3 CD player with six-speakers and satellite radio capability; driver door Smart Key system with Push Button Start and remote illuminated entry; a Multi-Informational Display with an energy monitor and fuel consumption history; six-way adjustable driver seat; power door locks; auto up/down on all windows with window jam protection; cruise control; tilt/telescopic adjustable steering wheel with audio and HVAC controls; color-keyed foldable power heated side mirrors; dual sun visors with vanity mirrors; and tonneau cover.

Prius also brings many new firsts to the Toyota lineup. To help increase fuel efficiency, the 1.8-liter engine is beltless, uses an electric water pump, a new exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) system, and an exhaust heat collection system.

Other Toyota firsts include a new Touch Tracer Display, which features touch sensors on the steering wheel switches that are designed to reduce driver eye movement for better concentration on the road; an available sliding glass moonroof is packaged with solar panels that power a new ventilation system; a remote air-conditioning system functions on battery-power alone, and allows remote operation so the driver can cool the interior temperature for comfort before getting in the car.

Also new to Toyota is an available Dynamic Radar Cruise Control system that uses advanced millimeter wave radar. The system also enables Lane Keep Assist, which helps the driver stay safely within the lane, and the Pre-Collision System, which retracts seatbelts and applies the brakes in certain conditions when a crash is unavoidable.

Base MSRPs do not include a delivery, processing, and handling (DPH) fee of $750. The DPH fee for vehicles distributed by Southeast Toyota (SET) and Gulf States Toyota (GST) may vary.

According to local newspapers in Japan, Toyota has received more than 20,000 orders for the 2010 Toyota Prius, which goes on sale in Japan in mid-May. Chunichi and Nikkei both cited an unnamed Toyota official saying that the company expects that number to reach 40,000 before the cars launch – a pace that could allow the 2010 Prius to overtake its Honda Insight rival.

The 2010 Toyota Prius vs. the 2010 Honda Insight battle has been going on for a couple of months now. Just recently, Toyota told its Japanese dealers that pricing for the 2010 Prius will start at 2.05 million yen ($20,750 USD), undercutting the current Prius which starts at 2.331 million yen ($23,590 USD).

The 2010 Honda Insight is priced from 1.89 million yen the first hybrid to be sold for less than 2 million yen.

Honda has sold 18,000 units of the Insight in the hybrids first month on the market – that’s significantly more than the automakers original target of 5,000 models. Toyota expects to sell 400,000 of the new Prius annually.

Just two days ago, it was reported that Toyota will lower the price of the 2010 Prius in Japan to make the hybrid more competitive with the 2010 Honda Insight. Today, Honda’s CEO Takeo Fukui said that he will not lower the price on Insight anymore.

“I don’t think that would be meaningful to do so,” Fukui told Automotive News. ”I think that is something we can’t do right now,” he said. “We have to carefully examine the new Prius to know whether it is necessary for us to take certain measures.”

Dealers in Japan have said that the 2010 Prius will carry a starting price tag of 2.05 million yen ($20,750 USD).

Fukui also said that Honda is working on a hybrid drivetrain for larger cars and will abandon previous targets to rely on clean diesels in the large vehicle segment.

Toyota has notified its Japanese dealers that it will price the new 2010 Toyota price at 2.05 million yen ($20,750 USD) which is right on par with the new 2010 Honda Insight. The move is Toyota’s latest response in the hybrid war between the Prius and Honda Insight.

Still, that might not be enough to entice treehuggers to go with the Prius over the Insight. Japanese dealers say that the base model of the 2010 Pius starts at 2.05 million yen ($20,750 USD) which is the same as a middle-trim Insight. The top-of-the-line 2010 Insight goes for 2.21 million yen ($22,370 USD) while the Prius runs all the way up to 3.27 million yen ($33,100 USD).

No word on whether if Toyota will make the same move in the U.S., but according to Automotive News, aggressive U.S. pricing is very likely. The 2010 Honda Insight went on sale in the U.S. in March with prices starting at $20,470. The third-generation 2010 Prius is expected to start around $24,000.

The current Toyota Prius starts at 2.331 million yen ($23,590 USD) in Japan.
