The 2010 Ford Mustang is already in dealer showroom with prices starting at $20,995. Ford announced that it will be offering a new factory-installed Track Pack which will be made available this later this summer for the 2010 Mustang GT coupes with a manual transmission. Ford Racing’s FR3 Handling Package is also available for those that want a more aggressive suspension.

The Track Pack option includes upgraded suspension parts, unique tuning and special 19-inch Pirelli summer tires. The FR3 Handling Package lower ride-height by more than 1-inch, increases spring rate about 75 pounds to improve turn in and mid-corner performance, adds stiffened front and rear sway bars and offers re-tuned dampers.

Pricing for the Track Pack starts at $1,495 while the FR3 Handling Pack goes for $1,335.

For those customers interested in more-aggressive performance, an optional factory-installed Track Pack is available this summer for 2010 Ford Mustang GT coupes with manual transmission. Ford Racing’s FR3 Handling Package also is available for those enthusiasts who want even more aggressive suspension tuning and can be installed in their garage or at a Ford dealer. Car and Driver magazine recently declared a 2010 Mustang equipped with a Track Pack the winner in a comparison test against the new Chevrolet Camaro and Dodge Challenger, calling the body control of the Mustang with the Track Pack “astounding.”

For decades, the Mustang has been the preeminent car in many forms of racing compiling victories and championships on road courses all over the world. In just the last few years Ford Racing’s Mustang FR500C captured the European GT4 drivers championship (2007, 2008) and the Grand-AM KONI Challenge championship (2005, 2008).

“At Ford, we always apply what we learn at the track to the street,” said Fritz Wilke, Mustang Performance/Enthusiast Manager. “The Track Pack and Ford Racing FR3 Handling Pack continue that heritage and give our performance customers great ways to have an even sportier experience in the 2010 Mustang GT coupe.”

Packaged aimed at performance enthusiasts
Both the 2010 V-6 and GT models feature improved handling, but Team Mustang wanted to create a distinctive option package aimed at performance enthusiasts. Starting with the 2010 GT manual coupe, the engineering team was able to create a package that hits the sweet spot.

The first ingredient was to add a high-performance summer tire, and the 19-inch Pirelli P Zero P255/40ZR-19 proved to be an inspired choice for improved grip. Ford’s engineering team then went to work on the underpinnings of the 2010 Mustang GT coupe, using Ford’s proven technology from the Shelby GT500 program.

The front and rear stabilizer bars from the 2009 Shelby GT500 complement the Pirelli tires and help balance the Track Pack 2010 Mustang GT coupe front to rear. The struts and shocks were retuned for the increased capability of the new tire and stabilizer bar changes. The engineering team also spent significant time at the track to ensure the Track Pack was rewarding on the track and offered a balance of spirited driving and track prowess.

The roll gradient (how much the car rolls while steering) was reduced nearly 13 percent compared with the base 2010 Mustang GT. Damping was increased by 23 percent in the front and 8 percent in the rear in the low- to mid-speed compared to the 2010 Mustang GT.

“By reducing the roll gradient, the car stays flatter in turns,” said Tom Barnes, Vehicle Engineering Manager, 2010 Mustang. “And when the car is flatter, the driver is more in command and more confident in what the car’s doing.

“Great handling comes from great control. A driver’s control of the vehicle is facilitated by information. This Track Pack communicates to the driver through the tires and suspension so well that is it easy to drive very quickly. It rewards smooth driving, while offering great capacity to cover driver error.”

Looking at all areas for improvement
In addition to the hardware changes and extensive tuning, the Ford team also took a more holistic approach to improving the Track Pack Mustang.

“Handling is not just chassis,” Barnes said. “Vehicle dynamics – how the Mustang responds under acceleration and braking – is important as well.”

The solution from the powertrain part of the equation was to use a 3.73 limited-slip axle with carbon-fiber clutch plates.

“The 3.73 axle allows for a more-responsive Mustang, especially at mid-range speeds,” Barnes said. “The carbon-fiber plates allow a very robust architecture in terms of temperature and repeated hard driving on the track.”

Performance® Friction brake pads, which better resist brake fade, are used front and rear. Both the anti-lock braking system (ABS) and AdvanceTrac were retuned to complement the advanced capabilities of the new tires and brakes. AdvanceTrac is standard on the 2010 GT coupe and can be operated in any of three modes: On, Off or Sport.

“The Track Pack covers all the bases,” Barnes said. “The new tires give the Mustang more grip, we have a more-responsive acceleration, better brake linings that are more consistent over time and the car is tied down better because of the changes to the bars and the shock tuning.”

“Track Pack has the grip, the handling and it has the ‘go.’ And it absolutely can be used as a daily driver. Track Pack offers the best of both worlds – great performance on the track or if you’re cruising down the road.”

Ford Racing’s FR3 Handling Pack features components proven out on the racetrack. Included in the pack are dampers, lowering springs, sway bars and a strut tower brace.

“The FR3 Handling Pack is derived from our extensive experience with the Ford Mustang FR500C competing in the Grand-Am KONI Challenge and FIA GT4,” said Andy Slankard, Engineering Supervisor, Ford Racing.

Enhancements from the FR3 Handling Pack include:

* Ride height lowered by more than 1 inch
* Increased spring rate by about 75 pounds to improve turn in and mid-corner performance
* Front and rear sway bars stiffened to eliminate roll
* Re-tuned dampers, increasing the compression and rebound

It took Roush just 11 months to complete its latest creation based on the 2010 Ford Mustang and after 11 months of impatient waiting, Roush has taken the wraps off of its 427RT Mustang. Under the hood is a Ford 4.3L V8 that has been supercharged to produce a total of 435-hp.

That gives the Roush 427RT Mustang the ability to go from 0 to 60 mph in the low 4-second range with a quarter mile run in the 12 seconds range. Going from 60 mph to 0 takes less than 115 feet.

In addition to the car, ROUSH now has more than 150 different parts which fit the 2010 Ford Mustang and allow buyers to personalize their vehicle according to their preferences.

Roush said that it will offer three versions at launch with prices ranging from $34,847 for the Stage 1T model and $43,051 for the 427RT.

Vaughn Gittin Jr., a drifting driver from Maryland who competes in the Formula D and D1 Grand Prix series, set out in a stock 2010 Ford Mustang along with 0 to 60 Magazine on a road trip across the United States.

While passing through Las Vegas, Gittin and 0 to 60 decided to stop at Las Vegas Motor Speedway to take a shot at the Guinness drifting world record. Gittin, who feels the current world record is not even a record (he explains it in the video after the jump), ends up breaking the record with a run of 6,285 feet.

The Guinness team still has to verify Gittin’s results but this video should be more than enough proof.

Ford’s Romeo Engine Plant reached a historic milestone yesterday finishing the production of its 10 million engine. The 10 millionth engine was a 4.6L V8 which will be shipped to Flat Rock, Mich., and will find its way under the hood of a new 2010 Ford Mustang GT.

Ford’s Romeo Engine Plant is responsible for producing V8 engines for the F150, Mustang, Shelby GT500, Explorer, E-Series van, Crown Victoria and the Mercury Grand Marquis.

The plant produces about 140 engines in an hour.

FORD’S ROMEO ENGINE PLANT PRODUCES 10 MILLIONTH ENGINE, CONTINUES TO POWER FORD ICONS

ROMEO, Mich., Feb. 19, 2009 – After years of delivering power to two of Ford Motor Company’s iconic products, the Ford F-150 and Mustang, Romeo Engine Plant has reached a historic milestone – the production of its 10 millionth engine.

The 10 millionth engine, a 4.6 liter 3-valve V-8, will be shipped to AutoAlliance International in Flat Rock, Mich., to be installed in a new 2010 Mustang GT.

The V-8 engines manufactured at the plant build on two of Ford’s strengths – capability for the Ford F-150, the best-selling truck in America, and performance for Mustang, America’s favorite muscle car. In 2008 alone, the engines produced at the plant generated a combined 90 million horsepower, about 2,750 times the combined horsepower of this year’s starting field for the Daytona 500.

“Romeo Engine’s products are powering two of Ford’s iconic vehicles and we focus on quality every minute of every day,” said Plant Manager Shaun Whitehead. “We deal with a great deal of complexity on our lines, and we’ve had very strong quality performance over a very long period of time.”

The Romeo plant, converted from a tractor manufacturing facility, produced its first engine in 1990 – a 4.6-liter, two-valve V-8. Today the plant, with a thousand employees, manufactures V-8 engines along with many of their major components including cast iron blocks, crankshafts, cylinder heads, connecting rods, camshafts and aluminum blocks.

The plant operates two lines – a high-volume Line, or HVL, and a niche line, where employees meticulously hand build 5.4 liter, 4-valve supercharged engines for the Shelby GT500. The HVL builds 4.6 liter two-valve and three-valve V-8 engines and 4.6 liter 2-valve Flex Fuel V-8 engines, delivering 140 engines an hour.

“We have more than 600 purchase parts from more than 150 suppliers so we deal with a large amount of intricate processes and parts on our line,” Whitehead said. “We have 11 different models on the line that we handle for seven different assembly plant customers – as well as the Ford Customer Service Division.”

The engines are shipped to plants in Michigan, Ohio, Kentucky, Missouri and Canada where they are placed in the F-150, Mustang, Econoline, Explorer, Crown Victoria or Grand Marquis models.

The HVL line stretches more than 4,000 feet, with quality monitored every step of the way to deliver continuous improvement. From 2007 to 2008, combined engine warranty data on the 4.6 liter engines showed a 9 percent improvement rate year over year, based on the first three months of use.

“Quality really is our number one priority,” said Quality Manager Phil Kloss. “Our Quality Operating System focuses on continuous improvement and an adherence to quality basics.”

In-line testing is consistently refined and error-proofed to detect and drive prevention of variations. Periodic job observations ensure operators follow instruction sheets 100 percent of the time, and detailed management reviews of all aspects of the system are designed to monitor any changes and ensure seamless launches.

“We have hundreds of eyes throughout our machining and assembly processes,” Kloss said. “Employees on the line constantly bring attention to changes in feel, appearance or test performance – even when unrelated to the task at hand.”

That teamwork obviously is paying off – both in quantity and quality.

“This is a huge accomplishment for our plant,” said Randy Newsom, UAW Local 400 Chairman at Romeo Engine. “We started this plant with a team concept that was really new for Ford when they converted from the tractor plant. Over the years, we’ve stayed consistent in our team approach, with both hourly and salaried employees working together. We strive to be the best engine builders in the world, and we’d like to build another 10 million.”

FoMoCo has dropped the pricing info for the new 2010 Ford Mustang. Ford is quick to point out that rivals Chevrolet Camaro and Dodge Challenger start at prices ranging from $1,000 to $2,600 more than Mustang.

So what can you expect to pay for the new pony? The entry level V6 Mustang coupe start at $20,996 while the entry-level convertible starts at $25,995. The V8 powered 315-hp 2010 Mustang GT coupe and Mustang GT convertible start at $27,995 and $32,995 respectively. Of course if you want the 540-hp 5.4L V8 Supercharged 2010 Shelby GT500 coupe get ready to cash out $46,325. The 2010 GT500 convertible starts at $51,225.

The Shelby GT500

Joining the first production 2010 Chevrolet Camaro at the 2009 Barrett-Jackson Scottsdale Collector Car Auction will be a 2010 Ford Mustang GT, a Shelby GT500 and the new 2010 Ford F-150 SVT Raptor.

Ford will auction all three cars at the auction that will run from January 11 to the 18. The 2010 Shelby GT500 will also make its debut at the 2009 Detroit Auto Show starting January 11. Proceeds form the sale of the 2010 Mustang GT will benefit the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation.

Steve Saleen has announced that he and his new company, SMS, will design, engineer and manufacture a new family of high-performance Mustangs. The 2010 Signature Series SMS 460 Mustangs won’t make their debut at the 2009 Detroit Auto Show next month – nor is SMS handing out any pricing, volume or shipping details for the high-performance ‘Stangs.

However, Saleen and SMS felt like they had to be one of the first ones to show that they are already at work with modifying the 2010 Ford Mustang with a press release and an image of Saleen.

Based on the 2010 Ford Mustang GT platform, the SMS 460 Mustangs will feature an SMS Supercharged 4.6L engine that produces 475 to over 600 horsepower. Saleen says that both models will feature extensive design refinements and performance innovations, including the patented SMS Red Butterfly Induction hood and a full compliment of SMS ultra-high performance components.

The drivetrain, suspension, aerodynamics, tires, wheels and interior will also receive an upgrade.

We have a bone to pick with Ford (but we won’t get into that just yet). The 2010 Ford Mustang, which we saw at the 2008 LA Auto Show, was one of the most significant reveals of 2008 even though the car won’t hit showrooms until next year.

It will be priced below its rivals – the Dodge Challenger and the 2010 Chevrolet Camaro. And while the new styling is more evolutionary than revolutionary, the 2010 Ford Mustang will still, like it always does, turn heads wherever you go.

Oh and the bone that we have to pick with Ford is that we weren’t invited to drive the 2010 Ford Mustang – but we’ll try to get that fixed for you.

2010 Ford Mustang GT:

We arrived in LA late yesterday and checked into our hotel room next to the LA Staples Convention Center. We then quickly unpacked our gear, grabbed our digital cameras and headed to Santa Monica for the live reveal of the 2010 Ford Mustang. It was there we realized that while the depressing Big 3 bailout has ate up most of the headlines in the past couple of weeks, our true passion is bringing our visitors up-to-date info on the hottest vehicles produced by the world’s greatest auto makers. And while the Big 3 may not be the best of the breed, we still owe it to them for creating some of the best American made automobiles that have not only captured the hearts of U.S. citizens, but people all over the world.

Hosted by FoMoCo’s marketing guru Jim Farley, the event was not a Ford event – but an event for all Mustang enthusiasts and for everyone that has that ’special bond’ with their cars. The event brought together everyone from legend Carol Shelby to American soldier Kory Chesher, a member of the 1st Brigade of the 101st Airborne Division serving in Iraq, who received the keys to a 2010 Mustang GT for winning the ”Mustang Stories” contest.

So for the next couple of days, forget that the Big 3 is on the brink of bankruptcy if it doesn’t receive aid and join us as we bring you live coverage of the 2008 LA Auto Show and show you some of the hottest new vehicles from automakers around the world. At the end of the day, it’s not about Rick Wagoner, Alan Mulally, Bob Nardelli or Detroit producing the wrong mix of vehicles. It’s about the feeling you get when you get in your car, hear that thump of the door closing, slide your key into the ignition and hear the engine roar after you turn it – or as many cars these days allow you to do - push the “Start” button.

2010 Ford Mustang Live Reveal:

After weeks of teasing, spy shots, and detail leaks, the 2010 Ford Mustang makes its official debut on the eve of the 2008 LA Auto Show.  And while the teasers gave us an impression that Ford only made minor changes to the Ford Mustang, you can now see that the new pony gets leaner, meaner and muscular with a more refined look inside-out. The 2010 Mustang also gets improved handling characteristics, more power, more options and more standard safety and technology features.

2010 Ford Mustang:

Let’s take a walk around the exterior. According to Ford, the exterior sheet metal is all new except for the fast-back roofline. At the front, the 2010 Mustang gets new headlamps, lower fascia, fenders, grille and a new powerdome hood that adds a more muscular stance to the car. The muscular appearance is enhanced with new front rear fenders and sculptured wheel flares. Walk to the back and you’ll see a slightly new rear fascia with angled rear corners, a sculptured decklid and a more sleek rear pony badge (also displayed on the front grille of course). The rear-view camera can be embedded into the spoiler which is available as an option on some models. The most notable feature on the back is the new taillight design which features three LED bulbs that sequentially go off when you indicate before turning. The new 2010 Ford Mustang comes with wheel-and-tire combinations that are 1-inch bigger across the lineup ranging from 17 to 19 inches.

Step inside of the 2010 Ford Mustang and your welcomed by a brand new interior with a new one-piece instrument panel design with genuine aluminum-finish trims. The new center stack adds the latest version of the Ford SYNC technology along with an electronic display of the new dual-climate control system. Our favorite feature inside? Drivers will be allowed to customize their ambient and instrument lighting through the MyColor option allowing an option of 125 colors (that’s way too many to pick from).

Let’s get down to power. At launch customers will be able to choose from a V6 or a V8 with a choice of a coupe, convertible or the new glass-roof option. While the 210-hp 4.0L V6 will remain unchanged, the 2010 Mustang GT will carry an uprated version of the 4.6L V8 that now allows 315-hp with a maximum torque of 325 lb-ft. The redline for the V8 has been increased by 250 rpm to 6,500. Each engine is mated to a 5-speed manual or 5-speed automatic transmissions.

What else? The 2010 Ford Mustang will run on regular gasoline but if you put premium in it, it will give you better mid-range torque. Fueling has been made simple with Easy Fuel™, Ford’s new innovative capless fuel system that is standard on all models. Also standard on all models is the AdvanceTrac™ Electronic Stability Control (ESC) feature.

The 2010 Mustang will be built at the Auto Alliance International Plant in Flat Rock, Michigan. Pricing will be announced closer to launch but according to a leak earlier today the 2010 Ford Mustang GT will start at $30,095.

2010 Ford Mustang:

Ford will unveil the 2010 Ford Mustang in just two days, but pricing and option package details have been leaked on the internet for the 2010 Mustang GT Premium. While no technical specifications are available as of yet, MustangBlog reports that the price for the 2010 Ford Mustang GT with a premium package will start at $30,095.

The 4.6L V8 GT Premium Package includes SYNC, 18-inch wheels, shaker 500 audio, ambient lighting, aluminum accent dash, aluminum pedals, aluminum shift knob and scuff plate along with a 6-gauge cluster with MyColor.

The 2010 Ford Mustang will be unveiled next week at the 2008 LA Auto Show. FoMoCo released the last teaser today bringing the total to 15 shots. The latest teaser shows us the rear taillight along with the new lip spoiler.

2010 Ford Mustang Teasers:

Ford has announced the winner of the ”Mustang Stories” online contest and the winner of the 2010 Ford Mustang. U.S. Army Specialist Kory Chesher, a member of the 1st Brigade of the 101st Airborne Division serving in Iraq will be flown to the LA Auto Show to see the 2010 Ford Mustang unveiled in person and to pickup his new Pony. Out of the top 25 stories, voters selected Chester’s story for the grand prize of a new 2010 Ford Mustang GT Coupe and the trip for two to LA. Chesher, 22, and his group will be returning the U.S. this month.

“I opened up my e-mail and saw the first bold message said, ‘Congratulations: You are a Winner in the Mustang Stories Contest.’ I couldn’t read it fast enough. I’m just overwhelmed,” Chesher said via e-mail from Iraq.

Chesher’s 242-word essay, “A Life Obsession,”:

It started when I was about 6 years old. I was in the truck with my father and we were at a stoplight. Across the road at the other light was this “car.” It drew my attention away from everything else in the world. I asked my dad what it was and he simply said, “Oh, that’s a Mustang.”

I remember it like it was yesterday. I now know that it was a 1968 black Fastback. That was almost 20 years ago. Twenty years of love, addiction, obsession. Twenty years of longing and desire.

Now I’m a solider in the United States Army deployed to Iraq. I spend my spare time tearing through Mustang magazines that my family and total strangers are kindhearted enough to send to me. Every opportunity I get I’m online poring through forums and pictures; studying every little tidbit of knowledge I can get my hands on; meticulously memorizing seemingly insignificant trivia. Names, dates, specs, colors, paint codes, production numbers, costs, anything, everything.

A Mustang of my own wouldn’t quell this life I live – it would supercharge it. The only thing greater than a life loving Mustangs is a life with a Mustang. With a Mustang to call my own I could finally experience the pride and freedom that I’ve only been watching from afar. It will ignite a passion like nothing I have ever experienced. Mustangs are my one true love.

I’m ready to go driving now.

By now you’ve probably figured that Ford releases a teaser for the 2010 Ford Mustang every week on Wednesday. We’re sure you can’t wait for the teasing to stop which it will on Nov. 19th when Ford takes the covers off the 2010 Mustang at the 2008 LA Auto Show.

Today, Ford released another teaser named “ShifterHero.” What does ShifterHero mean? We have no idea. All we know is we get a better look at the center console of the 2010 Mustang. From the image you can see that Ford made better use of extra space around the shifter adding some useful buttons to the area.

If you move your eyes north of the shifter, you’ll see that Ford has dropped the old air conditioning knobs replacing them with a more ergonomic knobs for the driver and passenger showing that the 2010 pony will get dual-climate control. We also see seat-heater buttons showing that heated-seats will be an option on the 2010 Mustang.

Other than that you’ll have to wait 20 days 9 hours until you see the full 2010 Ford Mustang.
