<p>When you think of Hyundai, the first thing that usually comes to mind is an affordable car with subpar design that is very unlikely to turn heads when you pull up in front of an &#8220;enthusiast&#8221; gathering. Actually, hardly anyone out there would consider a Hyundai owner a car enthusiast. Well, Hyundai is out to change all that and following its take on the luxury-segment with the Hyundai Genesis sedan, the Korean automaker is now offering a new rear-wheel-drive coupe that is sure to keep the enthusiast in you satisfied while attracting some attention to the sound coming from under your hood.</p>
<p>Meet the 2010 Hyundai Genesis Coupe 3.8 &#8211; Hyundai&#8217;s first attempt to compete in the high-performance rear-wheel-drive sports coupe segment. According to Derek Joyce, Hyundai&#8217;s main expert on the stateside for the Genesis Coupe, when the Korean automaker set out to plan the rear-wheel-drive sports coupe, it had three primary engineering benchmarks, including the Infiniti G37, Mazda RX-8 and the BMW 335i. While the 2010 Genesis Coupe is available with a 210-hp 4-cylinder turbocharged engine, those benchmarks apply mainly to the 3.8 model which is powered by the 3.8L V6 from the Genesis sedan making 306-hp. And since we wanted to see if Hyundai met those benchmarks, we chose to take the 3.8 model (3.8 Grand Touring to be exact) out for a 2-hour drive around Mount Kisco, NY.</p>

<p><strong>Exterior</strong>:</p>
<p>Stand outside the 2010 Genesis Coupe and you&#8217;ll notice right away that Hyundai made it a point to distinguish the model apart from others in the Hyundai lineup. It features a sports car wedge design with a &#8220;Z&#8221;-shaped body character line and short overhangs and low cowl-to-axle distance. Nonetheless, many out there are sure to agree that the G37, RX-8 and the 335i are much more aggressive and sportier in appearance. Which is when you really start to wonder about the market the Genesis Coupe is competing in. At this point, after some debate with fellow auto journalists, we came to a conclusion that when you compare the Genesis Coupe to cars like the Mitsubishi Eclipse, Nissan 350Z, Honda Accord Coupe or the Nissan Altima Coupe, Hyundai&#8217;s rear-wheel-drive sports car starts to shine a little more. Throw on the available Track package and the red Brembo brake calipers, chrome-front accents, 19-inch gunmetal-finish alloy wheels and HID headlamps are sure to turn some heads.</p>

<p><strong>Interior</strong>:</p>
<p>Take a seat inside and you&#8217;ll realize that Hyundai has done its best to step-up its interior design and quality. Most of the center-console and dash has a very solid build while the ergonomic placement of buttons on the center-dash and steering-wheel keep the inside of the Genesis Coupe very driver-oriented. Standard interior features on the Hyundai Genesis Coupe 3.8 model include black leather seats, automatic temperature control, &#8216;Genesis&#8217; door sill plates, driver&#8221;s Lumbar support, metalgrain and chrome interior accents, a keyless entry system, leather-wrapped steering wheel/shift knob, power auto one-touch windows, AM/FM/XM/CD Player and USB/iPod/Aux jack connectivity, steering wheel audio controls and Bluetooth connectivity. If you opt for the 3.8 Grand Touring model, Hyundai will throw in a <span><span>Ÿ</span></span><span>360-watt Infinity premium audio system, proximity key with push button start, heated brown leather seats, a sunroof and a backup warning system. A touch-screen navigation will also be made available later this summer.</span></p>

<p><strong>Performance</strong>:</p>
<p>So it looks pretty good and the interior is filled with features that you most likely wouldn&#8217;t expect in a Hyundai. But has Hyundai met its performance benchmarks and can it do what the Korean automaker wants it to do &#8211; which is steal customers from Infiniti, BMW and Mazda? Well, not exactly. By no means are we saying that the 2010 Genesis Coupe 3.8 offers disappointing performance figures or a dynamic sporty drive. While the rear-wheel-drive system and the 5-link independent system rear-suspension system are sure to put a smile in your face, the Genesis Coupe 3.8 is no match for the rear-wheel-drive, high-performance, power hungry G37, 335i or the Mazda RX8. However, as we said before, when you look at the 2010 Genesis Coupe 3.8 next to the Accord Coupe, Altima Coupe, Eclipse or the 350Z, you can be pretty sure that Hyundai is very likely to steal some customers from those three &#8220;affordable&#8221; sport coupes.</p>
<p>The 306-hp engine will push you from 0 to 60 mph in whopping 5.7 seconds and will let you keep going until 149 mph &#8211; performance figures that let the Genesis Coupe 3.8 shine amongst the Honda, Mitsubishi and Nissans. Hyundai has paid great attention to details that enthusiasts will appreciate, including a dual-link MacPherson strut front suspension and a Torsen limited-slip differential for enhanced acceleration and cornering dynamics. Opt for the 2010 Genesis Coupe 3.8T (Track) model and you&#8217;ll enjoy a track-tuned suspension and a Brembo monobloc fixed caliper braking system.</p>
<p>All 2010 Genesis Coupe models come standard with a close-ratio 6-speed manual but the 3.8 also offers a premium 6-speed ZF automatic with steering-wheel mounted paddle-shifters for a manual sport mode. We had the chance to drive both transmissions in 3.8 model and we have to say that while we prefer manual transmissions as enthusiasts, the 6-speed ZF automatic with SHIFTRONIC put a bigger smile on our face with very quick shifts at our flicks on the &#8216;-&#8217;, &#8216;+&#8217; paddles.</p>
<p><strong>Overall</strong>:</p>
<p>So Hyundai has grabbed your attention and is actually making you think about parking they&#8217;re first rear-wheel-drive sports coupe in your driveway &#8211; but how much does it cost? The 2010 Genesis Coupe 3.8 starts at $25,000 and will get you from 0 to 60 mph 5.7 seconds while you enjoy some of the standard features listed above. Opt for the $27,500 Genesis Coupe 3.8 Grand Touring and you&#8217;ll get heated brown leather seats, a sunroof, a rear-view mirror with a compass, keyless push-button start, a Infinity 380 watt sound system, backup warning system and HID headlamps. Try those kind of options at that price tag with a BMW 335i, Infiniti G37 or even the BMW 135i. While you&#8217;re at it, try finding all that packaged into an Accord Coupe, Altima Coupe, Eclipse or the 350Z at that price tag.</p>
<p>A fully loaded 2010 Hyundai Genesis 3.8 Track model with the Brembo braking system, rear-spoiler and a track-tuned suspension will run you $30,260 with a 6-speed manual. Expect to pay in the $31,500 range for the 6-Speed ZF automatic with paddle shifters.</p>

<p>We&#8217;re pretty sure Hyundai created the short video as a true appreciation of the 45-years of muscle the Mustang has provided us&#8230; right?</p>

<p>Besides the storyline and the return of the original cast, I was pretty excited to see the <a href="http://www.egmcartech.com/2008/11/02/buzz-garage-hyundai-genesis-coupe/">2010 Hyundai Genesis Coupe</a> make its onscreen debut in &#8220;<a href="http://www.egmcartech.com/2009/04/06/fast-furious-shatters-box-office-records/">Fast &amp; Furious</a>.&#8221; However, I was very disappointed when I didn&#8217;t even catch a glimpse of the two-door Hyundai sports car.</p>
<p>According to Miles Johnson, the 2010 Hyundai Genesis Coupe was &#8220;ready to go.&#8221; He said that he thinks another manufacturer blocked Hyundai from appearing in the fourth installment of the franchise (we&#8217;re guessing it was Subaru with their Impreza WRX STI).</p>
<p><span id="more-32790"></span></p>
<p>Apparently Hyundai never got the official word from Universal Pictures. He said that Hyundai had &#8220;a few running prototypes, and the red turbocharged 2.0L 4-cylinder Genesis Coupe SE&#8221; had been prepped just for the filming of the movie.</p>
<p>Johnson said that the 2010 Genesis Coupe was also scheduled to appear in the opening sequence with Vin Diesel.</p>

The Hyundai Genesis Coupe is available with a 210-hp 2.0L turbocharged 4-cylinder and a 306-hp 3.8L V6 with prices starting at $22,000 and $25,000 respectively.</p>
<p>According to Hyundai USA CEO John Krafcik, sales of the Hyundai Genesis Coupe have been &#8220;simply smoking.&#8221; Krafcik told <em>Motor Trend</em> that initial sales of the Genesis Coupe are beating the Genesis sedan figures with &#8220;significantly less&#8221; advertising.</p>
<p><span id="more-32028"></span></p>
<p>Dealers currently have many Genesis Coupe 2.0T models on hand. Since the 3.8L is still in transit, it&#8217;s hard to say which powertrain options customers will pick most. Nonetheless, word is that 50 percent of those showing interest in the Genesis Coupe are going for the Grand Touring model.</p>

Therefore, it&#8217;s only right that many auto publications will be putting the two coupes face-to-face during their test-drive of the new Korean offering.</p>
<p><em>Edmunds </em>compared the 2009 Infiniti G37 coupe to the 2010 Hyundai Genesis Coupe 3.8 in its recent comparison test. Power for the 2009 Infiniti G37 Coupe comes from a 3.7L V6 that produces 330-hp with a peak torque of 270 lb-ft. That allows for a 0 to 60 mph run in 5.7 seconds. The 2010 Hyundai Genesis Coupe is powered by a 3.8L V6 making 306-hp and a maximum torque of 310 lb-ft. However, the Genesis Coupe does 0 to 60 mph much slower than the Infiniti G37 with a time of 6.4 seconds.</p>
<p>Pricing for the 2009 Infiniti G37 Coupe starts at $35,900 while the 2010 Genesis Coupe 3.8 starts at $10,900 less with an MSRP of $25,000. Adding the Track Package brings the pricing up to $29,500 giving your Genesis Coupe a stiffer suspension, a Torsen limited-slip differential, Brembo brakes and 19-inch wheels.</p>
<p>While we&#8217;ll leave it up to you to decide which is better &#8211; here is <em>Edmunds </em>conclusion: &#8220;It&#8217;s the undeniable value equation that tips this test in the favor of the 2010 Hyundai Genesis 3.8. You simply get more car for your dollar with the Genesis coupe. Sure, it&#8217;s not as much car as the 2009 Infiniti G37, but at two-thirds the cost, it doesn&#8217;t have to be.&#8221;</p>

<p>Along with details on the <a href="http://www.egmcartech.com/2009/02/11/2010-hyundai-genesis-coupe-pricing-starts-at-22000/">2010 Hyundai Genesis Coupe pricing and the R-Spec Genesis Coupe</a>, Hyundai announced today that is teaming up with Rhys Millen Racing and Red Bull Energy Drink to race a 550-hp Genesis Coupe in the Pikes Peak International Hill Climb, the Formula Drift Professional Drifting Championship and at select Redline Time Attack series events in 2009.</p>
<p>Millen&#8217;s drift race car is based on the Genesis Coupe 3.8 and features a 4.1L engine that gets a Turbonetics turbocharger and other modificatins that increase output to 550-hp with a peak torque of 520 lb-ft.</p>

<p><strong>HYUNDAI LAUNCHES RHYS MILLEN RACING RED BULL drift TEAM SPONSORSHIP AT CHICAGO AUTO SHOW</strong></p>
<p>CHICAGO, Feb. 11, 2009 &#8220;“ With enthusiasts eagerly awaiting the upcoming launch of the 2010 Genesis Coupe, Hyundai is adding to the excitement by teaming with Rhys Millen Racing and Red Bull Energy Drink to campaign the car in the high-energy sport of drift racing this year.</p>
<p>At the Chicago Auto Show, Hyundai unveiled its motorsports program in the U.S. with the help of drift champion Rhys Millen, who will fabricate and race a 550-horsepower Genesis Coupe in the Pikes Peak International Hill Climb, the Formula Drift Professional Drifting Championship and at select Redline Time Attack series events in 2009.</p>
<p>&#8220;Today&#8217;s announcement puts the Genesis Coupe into three great motorsports series,&#8221; said John Krafcik, acting president and CEO, Hyundai Motor America. &#8220;We like to refer to the Genesis Coupe as the sinister sibling to the North American Car of the Year, the Genesis sedan and we look forward to Rhys harnessing every ounce of energy in the Coupe as he campaigns it.&#8221;</p>
<p>Millen and his team are an ideal match to launch Hyundai&#8217;s racing efforts. Millen&#8217;s driving credentials include movie stunts, multiple drifting championships, a Pikes Peak world record and his recent New Year&#8217;s Eve Las Vegas truck flip. But behind Millen&#8217;s success in the driver&#8217;s seat is a full team of engineers and fabricators that know how to maximize the potential of a race car.</p>
<p>Millen had his first opportunity to test drive the Genesis Coupe&#8217;s performance credentials when he performed precision driving for the car&#8217;s debut advertising campaign. Millen flogged a Genesis Coupe for three days during the filming process at Road Atlanta racetrack, and the car never missed a beat.</p>
<p>&#8220;The Genesis Coupe Concept inspired me to seek out a relationship with Hyundai and it has developed into multiple projects,&#8221; said Millen, professional race driver and founder of RMR. &#8220;The immediate focus is developing the RMR Red Bull Hyundai Genesis Coupe into a drift car with a 550-horsepower engine and a lightweight, rigid chassis. We are applying everything we know about fabricating into building this car.&#8221;</p>
<p><strong>THE CHASSIS BUILD</strong></p>
<p>Six RMR employees have already stripped a Genesis Coupe to bare metal and the chassis has spent five days in an Alkali bath removing all rubber and adhesives. The chassis has also been stitch welded for added structural rigidity.</p>
<p><strong>CARBON FIBER BODY PANELS</strong></p>
<p>Millen quickly decided to take the already light weight Genesis Coupe and make it even lighter. His crew will take the molds used to build the &#8220;Art of Speed&#8221; SEMA car to once again replicate the Genesis Coupe&#8217;s body out of carbon fiber. The hood, deck lid, roof, doors, fenders, front fascia and side skirts are all built out of carbon fiber. The carbon fiber panels range from 50 percent to 80 percent lighter than the sheet metal they replaced. For example, a factory Hyundai Genesis Coupe door weighs 68 pounds but modifications made by RMR reduce the door weight to just 8.5 pounds. This weight-saving approach is carried throughout the car without compromising its powerful curves, surface detail and &#8220;Z&#8221; bodyside line.</p>
<p>The side skirts have functional flat rocker panels with ducts to pull air out from underneath the car. A functional splitter on the front fascia and a built-in diffuser create pressure without drag. A rear diffuser with long tunnels keeps the air moving underneath the car. Downforce has been further increased by an APR GTC-500 rear wing that is fully adjustable and was designed using Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) analysis. The hood is vented to dissipate heat and Aerocatch hood latches are used for safety.</p>
<p>The rear widebody fenders are also made out of carbon fiber and blend seamlessly into the vehicle design with a creative painting concept. The goal curb for the car is 2,400 pounds.</p>
<p><strong>INTERIOR</strong></p>
<p>The interior of the RMR Red Bull Hyundai Genesis Coupe is unrecognizable from its origins as a well-appointed 2+2 coupe designed with everyday driving in mind. All comfort and convenience features are removed to make way for a custom-fabricated eight-point safety cage and firewall which reinforce the Genesis Coupe&#8217;s already stiff chassis. By removing the roof, the RMR fabricators welded every aspect of the safety cage to the frame of the car. The braces on the A and B pillars also tie into the strength of the body. The safety cage is required for racing and a single Sparco racing seat further protects the driver in the overhauled cockpit.</p>
<p><strong>SUSPENSION</strong></p>
<p>The RMR Red Bull Hyundai Genesis Coupe utilizes a KW remote reservoir three-way adjustable coilover suspension. Adjustable chro-moly sway bars dial the suspension in further for true track performance. RMR also fabricated adjustable lower control arms, rear control arms and toe links to allow precise tuning of the chassis.</p>
<p><strong>ENGINE AND TURBO KIT</strong></p>
<p>The Hyundai Lambda 3.8-liter V6 engine, which comes standard on the Genesis Coupe 3.8, will be stroked to 4.1-liters and further enhanced by a Turbonetics turbocharger. An AEM engine management system will also be used. The engine will be mated to a HKS sequential transmission. The end result is a Genesis Coupe that will produce 550 horsepower and 520 lb.-ft. of torque.</p>
<p><strong>WHEELS, TIRES AND BRAKES</strong></p>
<p>To ensure that the enhanced power plant translates all the way to road performance, RMR added 18- by 8.5-inch front and 18- by 9.5-inch rear Enkei RPF1 light weight wheels and 225/40-18 Toyo Proxes R1R front tires and 265/40 Toyo Proxes R1R rear tires.</p>
<p><strong>PAINT SCHEME</strong></p>
<p>The paint scheme is a combination of blue, silver and unpainted black carbon fiber with its signature weave pattern.</p>

<p>Hyundai has dropped the pricing details on the 2010 Hyundai Genesis Coupe which will hit dealerships later this month. Prices for the Genesis Coupe 2.0T with a 210-hp 2.0L turbocharged 4-cylinder model starts at $22,000 while the Genesis Coupe 3.8 with a 306-hp 3.8L V6 starts at $25,000. Both of those Genesis coupe models come with a 6-speed manual.</p>
<p>Upgrade to Hyundai&#8217;s 5-speed automatic with SHIFTRONIC on the Genesis Coupe 2.0T and the price goes up to $23,250. The Genesis Coupe 3.8 is available with Hyundai&#8217;s ZF 6-Speed automatic SHIFTRONIC with prices starting at $26,500. Buyers can also opt for additional options and packages (which are detailed after the jump in the press release) including the Premium and Track packages on the 2.0T models and the Track and Grand Touring packages on the 3.8 models.</p>
<p>Hyundai also said that later in the model year it will bring a tuner-focused R-Spec model which it says will be the &#8220;ultimate upgradeable and affordable&#8221; Genesis Coupe in the lineup. Power will come from the same 2.0L turbocharged 4-cylinder engine which will be mated to a 6-speed manual (no automatic will be available with the R-Spec). It will features 19-inch gunmetal-finish alloy wheels wrapped in Bridgestone Potenza RE050A tires. Other goodies include a Brembo braking system, track-tuned suspension, Torsen-type limited-slip differential, a Tire Pressure Monitoring System, leather-wrapped steering wheel and shift knob, power windows with one-touch up and down, iPod/USB connectivity and projector beam headlamps. Pricing for the Hyundai Genesis Coupe R-Spec model will start at $23,750.</p>

<p>Hyundai will provide more details on the <a href="http://www.egmcartech.com/2008/11/02/buzz-garage-hyundai-genesis-coupe/">2010 Hyundai Genesis Coupe</a> at the 2009 Chicago Auto Show this week. As we already know, the 2.0L entry-level Genesis Coupe will be available in four trim levels including 2.0T, 2.0T Premium, 2.0T R-Spec and 2.0T Track.</p>
<p>In Chicago Hyundai will show the R-Spec version which is powered by a 2.0 4-cylinder engine making a total of 212-hp.</p>
<p>According to <em>Automotive News, </em>Hyundai will also announce official pricing details for the 2010 Genesis Coupe in Chicago.</p>

Hyundai is offering consumers an opportunity to edit their own version of &#8220;The Epic Lap&#8221;, which they can then post to social networking sites and share it with their friends.</p>

<p>Hyundai is supposedly preparing another <a href="http://www.egmcartech.com/2008/11/02/buzz-garage-hyundai-genesis-coupe/">Hyundai Genesis Coupe</a> ad spot with Yo-Yo Ma&#8217;s solo of &#8220;Gigue&#8221; from Bach&#8217;s Suite No. 3 in C Major. That version will debut in the coming weeks.</p>

<p>Hyundai Motor America has killed speculations and rumors that it will build a convertible version of the 2010 Hyundai Genesis Coupe. According to Miles Johnson, manager of product public relations, a Genesis Convertible was never in Hyundai&#8217;s pipeline.</p>
<p>&#8220;It&#8217;s never been in the plan,&#8221; Johnson told <em>Inside Line</em>. &#8220;There was some internal discussion early on, but since we unveiled the coupe in New York, there&#8217;s been no talk.&#8221;</p>

<p>Johnson said the coupe version of the Genesis was never buit to be a convertible and was made to be a global car. He said Koreans aren&#8217;t &#8220;down&#8221; with the idea of wind in your hair and there isn&#8217;t enough traction for Hyundai in the U.S. to offer a convertible. He said Hyundai has no plans to offer any convertible on any of its models in the near future.</p>
<p>The <a href="http://www.egmcartech.com/2008/11/02/buzz-garage-hyundai-genesis-coupe/">2010 Hyundai Genesis Coupe</a> will hit dealerships in March.</p>

<p>Hyundai announced today that it will air its first two commercials for the 2010 Hyundai Genesis Coupe during Super Bowl XLIII on Sunday, February 1, 2009.</p>
<p>The two sports will share the same theme known as &#8220;The Epic Lap.&#8221; The first commercial that will air during the first half of the game will feature high-performance driving by Rhys Millen with music performed by Grammy Award-winning cellist Yo-Yo Ma. The second will feature a second n un-named musical talent with re-edited driving footage matched to a completely distinct soundtrack.</p>
<p>&#8220;The Epic Lap&#8221; Genesis Coupe commercials were created by Goodby, Silverstein &amp; Partners. The 2010 Hyundai Genesis Coupe will go on sale in spring of 2009 as a 2010 model. Pricing will be announced closer to launch.</p>

<p>The Koreans have gotten their allocation of the new <a href="http://www.egmcartech.com/2008/11/02/buzz-garage-hyundai-genesis-coupe/">2009 Hyundai Genesis Coupes</a> and it seems like one customer felt his Genesis Coupe could push the limits a little more than he thought possible. Needless to say that he learned the hard way by crashing into the concrete base of a metal light pole.</p>
<p>As you can see from the images, the 2.0T Genesis Coupe you see here was the only car involved in the accident leading us to believe that the driver lost control and the Brembo brakes of the Genesis weren&#8217;t strong enough to slow him down.</p>
<p>What&#8217;s more interesting is that the airbags failed to deploy. You can see that the front driver side received the most damage. Wonder what Hyundai has to say about this.</p>

<p>R. Millen Motor Sports Sales (RMR) was founded 12 years ago by Rhys Millen. In February, the company approached Hyundai to introduce the <a href="http://www.egmcartech.com/2008/11/02/buzz-garage-hyundai-genesis-coupe/">2010 Hyundai Genesis Coupe</a> to the aftermarket tuning world and racing enthusiasts before it goes on sale in spring 2009. Hyundai took its sweet time to deliver the first Genesis Coupe 2.0T to the RMR shop in August allowing the crew of six just 12 weeks before they put it on display today at the 2008 SEMA Auto Show.</p>
<p>Appearance wise, RMR added a blue/silver paint scheme with unpainted black carbon fiber and its signature weave pattern. RMR&#8217;s main focus was to reduce the weight of the Genesis Coupe. Ranging from 50 to 80 percent lighter than the sheet metal RMR replaced the hood, deck lid, roof, doors, fenders, front fascia and side skirts with carbon fiber body panels. For example, the Genesis Coupe&#8217;s standard door weighs 68 pounds but RMR reduce the door weight to just 8.5 pounds. Inside, RMR removed all the comfort and replaced it with a custom eight-point safety cage and firewall. That made room for single Sparco racing seat.</p>
<p>Performance wise, RMR added Turbonetics turbocharger to the 220-hp 2.0L turbocharged engine that comes with the base Genesis Coupe. That allowed for extra horsepower and torque which RMR did not disclose. Further enhancing performance, RMR added a KW coilover suspension with two-way adjustable damping technology.</p>
<p>The RMR Hyundai Genesis Coupe rides on 18-inch wheels wrapped in Bridgestone Potenza race slicks tires. RMR kept the factory Brembo brake calipers since they were ideal for racing.</p>

<p>The 2009 Hyundai Genesis Coupe has been released to the Korean market but won&#8217;t arrive in U.S. showrooms until Spring 2009. But thanks to the Korean press release we get some official technical specs on the upcoming Hyundai coupe.</p>
<p>Power for the base Genesis coupe comes from a 2.0L turbocharged unit that produces 210-hp on regular fuel and 223-hp on premium fuel. The range-topping <a href="http://www.egmcartech.com/2008/10/09/hyundai-genesis-coupe-to-get-new-310-hp-v6-lambda-rs/">3.8L V6 Lambda RS</a> makes 310-hp with a maximum torque of 266 lb-ft. 0 to 62 mph comes in 6.3 seconds.</p>

<p>(Jeju Island, Korea) Hyundai Motor Co. today launched its Genesis Coupe in the Korean market at an event on Jeju Island attended by members of the Korean and international press. The logical extension of the highly acclaimed Genesis sports sedan launched earlier this year, the Genesis Coupe raises the Hyundai brand&#8217;s emotional quotient to a new level with its high performance capabilities and front engine rear wheel drive architecture. Genesis Coupe is an exemplification of Hyundai&#8221;s design evolution: simple, modern, crisp lines with wonderful proportions and aspiration appeal.</p>
<p>&#8220;The Genesis Coupe is our very first thoroughbred, a true halo car with all the hallmarks of a high performance car,&#8221; said Dr. Hyun&#8221;“Soon Lee, president of the Corporate Research and Development Division. &#8220;The Coupe will do exactly what it was designed to do: Provide a thrilling driving experience and attract new customers to Hyundai showrooms and continue the transformation of our brand.&#8221;</p>
<p><strong>Styled to Thrill</strong></p>
<p>Genesis Coupe projects a unique sports car look with strong character lines, pronounced shoulders and dynamic details. The aggressive, wedge-like silhouette, short overhangs and long wheelbase give it classic sports car proportions.</p>
<p>Inside and out, the design is thoroughly provocative and emotionally-charged. The exterior front styling radiates a sporty character. Its dynamic, voluminous hood, carefully articulated bumper surfacing and sharply distinctive headlamps combine to give hints of strong performance.</p>
<p>Two signature design elements truly define the Genesis Coupe&#8217;s highly distinctive look and escalate its dynamic appeal: the emotionally sculpted Z-line and the unique day light opening of the quarter glass. The rear view with its two-tone bumper and dual square-shaped exhaust tips project a solid, vigorous look.</p>
<p>The interior with its aggressive and futuristic design reflects sophistication and sportiness in every detail. Powerful and elegant, exclusive materials have been applied to the interior to create a unique atmosphere. Dual cylinder-type gauge cluster, a floor-mounted accelerator pedal and engine start button are among the innovative design touches.</p>
<p>A full bucket-type driver&#8217;s seat provides excellent support at all critical points. For convenient entry and egress, the front seat backrests feature walk-in memory design so that the original position of the backrest is restored on entry or egress of the rear seat passengers. Rear seats can be made to quickly fold down with the folding lever in the cabin or the folding button in the trunk.</p>
<p>With its 2820mm wheelbase (290mm longer than the Tiburon/Coupe), Genesis Coupe&#8217;s cabin provides more headroom, legroom and shoulder room than its predecessor.</p>
<p>The 55/45 front-rear weight distribution endows Genesis Coupe with near-ideal balance for exceptional handling and more refined steering characteristics.</p>
<p>The advantages of a rear-wheel-drive setup include:</p>
<p>    &#8211; Transfer of weight to the rear axle during heavy acceleration which improves traction<br />
    &#8211; Larger steering radius as there are no complicated drive shaft joints in the front wheels so that they can now be turned farther<br />
    &#8211; Better handling and braking thanks to even weight distribution so that the front and rear tires and springs are placed under more even loads, allowing for more grip during cornering and braking</p>
<p><strong>Superior Performance</strong></p>
<p>The Genesis Coupe is the most thrilling performance coupe yet from Hyundai and most importantly, it is attainable &#8220;“ It promises to be the most affordable 300-hp sport coupe on the planet!</p>
<p>At the heart of the story are two performance-focused engines: The range-topping, all aluminum 310 horsepower (premium fuel), 306 horsepower (regular fuel), DOHC 3.8-liter V6 Lambda RS. The base engine will be the 223 horsepower (premium fuel), 210 horsepower (regular fuel) 2.0-liter turbocharged Theta.</p>
<p>Based on the highly successful Lambda V-6 first introduced in 2004, the high performance RS edition (Racing Sport) of the Lambda features several key modifications which have raised power to a maximum of <a href="mailto:303ps@6300rpm">303ps@6300rpm</a> (306 horsepower for US market) and peak torque to <a href="mailto:36.8kg/m@4700rpm">36.8kg/m@4700rpm</a> enabling the Genesis Coupe to catapult from zero to 100km/h in just 6.3 seconds. The Lambda RS features all-aluminum construction, Dual CVVT (Continuously Variable Valve Timing) on both the intake and exhaust valves and a revised intake system.</p>
<p>Because of the sporty, low hood line of the Genesis Coupe, RS engineers were forced to redesign the intake and exhaust systems trimming 5cm from its height.</p>
<p>The exhaust manifold&#8221;s length and cross section were optimized for reduced resistance which maximizes high speed performance and yields a pleasingly sporty exhaust note. At the same time, the diameter of the intake port in the ETC (Electronic Throttle Control) module was enlarged to improve engine breathing.</p>
<p>Attention was also paid to stiffening the aluminum engine block so it could endure higher stresses while a piston cooling jet was added under each cylinder to reduce thermal loading and prevent heat damage. A further boost in performance was attained by adopting more aggressive camshaft profiles on the Continuously Variable Valve Timing system which governs both the intake and exhaust valves. The V-6 is mated to a six-speed ZF automatic with a 3.4 final drive ratio. A six-speed manual is also available and features a short-stroke shifter (under 41mm), optimized gear ratios and triple cone synchronizers (1st, 2nd and 3rd gears) for smoother shifts.</p>
<p>For economy, Hyundai offers the Theta 2.0-liter inline four cylinder engine with a turbocharger for excellent performance. Maximum power is rated 210ps @ 6000rpm (210 horsepower for US market) while peak torque is 30.5kg-m @ 2000rpm (30.8kg-m for US market), sufficient to propel the car from 0-100km/h in just 8.3 sec. Like the V-6, the Theta employs a Dual CVVT system plus a piston oil cooling jet which is positioned under each cylinder to deliver improved cooling and better fuel efficiency.</p>
<p>Genesis Coupe&#8217;s chassis has been optimized for dynamic handling and more accurate steering feeling. Dual MacPherson struts in the front improve maneuverability by reducing the offset between the wheel center and the tie rods and increasing the caster angle.</p>
<p>For securing body rigidity while cornering, a front tower strut bar is optional. The rear rides on a five-link setup with reduced toe variation during acceleration, braking and cornering thus yielding precise maneuverability.</p>
<p>The Limited Slip Differential features a torque sensor for improved ride and handling under any road conditions. The rear differential transfer case sits atop a three-point mounting system (including a hydraulic bush mounting) for reduced noise and vibration</p>
<p>Mono tube-type shock absorbers have separate gas and oil chambers to enable stable damping force resulting in better ride and road holding performance.</p>
<p>The use of crash durable adhesives in critical areas has increased dynamic torsional rigidity by 15 percent enabling better ride and handling, increased safety performance and reduced NVH. The Coupe is one of the quietest cars in its class thanks to special reinforcements and applications of various poly-urethane foam as well as sound interceptive materials that have helped eliminate both noise and vibration.</p>
<p><strong>Safety</strong></p>
<p>The use of high strength steel enhances safety and overall performance by achieving a stiffer, lighter body structure. When combined with the six-airbag system, active headrests, Genesis Coupe is expected to earn a five-star crash safety rating.</p>
<p>The Genesis Coupe promises to stop just as fast as it goes. Premium high performance disc brakes from Brembo will be available as part of an optional track&#8221;“use performance package. For the Genesis Coupe´s front 18&#8243;“inch wheels, Brembo engineers developed 13.4&#8243;“inch x 1.1&#8243;“inch rotors (340mm x 28mm) and four&#8221;“pot fixed calipers (42mm+42mm) while the rear setup features 13.0&#8243;“inch x 0.78&#8243;“inch rotors (330mm x 20mm) gripped by four&#8221;“pot fixed calipers (32mm+28mm).</p>
<p>At the highest level of international motorsports, Brembo´s signature fixed monobloc brake callipers and oversized rotors are recognized as delivering the ultimate in braking performance. The Italian brake manufacturer is acknowledged as the world leader in high performance braking systems and is a supplier to the world´s best&#8221;“known formula racing teams as well as Italian and German manufacturers of supercars and sports cars.</p>
<p>Available safety equipment also includes Electronic Stability Program which uses the speed sensors on each wheel and the ability to brake individual wheels that are the basis of antilock brakes. ESP adds a control unit that monitors steering wheel angle and vehicle rotation around the vehicle&#8217;s vertical axis.</p>
<p>This unit uses the steering and rotation information to detect that the vehicle is about to travel in a direction different from the one indicated by the steering wheel position. Then ESP automatically brakes the appropriate wheel to help the driver maintain control.</p>
<p>Touches of convenience include USB/iPod connectors, auxilliary audio inputs, 5.6-inch information display unit (for audio controls, digital clock, climate control, inside/outside temperature) and steering wheel-mounted remote controls for the audio system. An eight-speaker Infinity sound system is optional.</p>
<p>Hyundai hopes to sell 40,000 Genesis Coupes annually, 5,000 in Korea and 35,000 in overseas markets. The Genesis Coupe&#8217;s target customer is a middle-aged male (64 percent) looking for superior performance in terms of acceleration and handling. The competitive set includes the Mitsubishi Eclipse, Nissan Altima Coupe and Mustang.</p>
<p>Korean retail prices start at 23,200,000 Korean won for the base version and with full options, including the V-6 Lamda RS engine, the Coupe tops out at 33,920,000 Korean won.</p>
