If you watched the Indy 500 over the weekend, then you most likely saw the 2010 Chevrolet Camaro SS Pace Car take the track. The Indy 500 is no new territory for the Camaro – the model has paced the race give times since its introduction in 1967.

Although, for the first time, GM will not offer a Indy Camaro Pace Car replica for the street model. Each previous model of the Camaro has seen anywhere between 100 to 6,000 replicas of the Indy Camaro Pace Car for collectors.

“The new Camaro has and will pace a lot of races including Indy and Daytona,” Chevrolet spokesman Terry Rhadigan told Inside Line. “In order to keep special editions special, we can’t go to that well too often. Plus, sales of the new car are phenomenal.”

Jason Drees of Symdon Chevrolet-Pontiac in Wisconsin has just confirmed that GM will be offering a limited-edition 2010 Chevrolet Camaro Bumblebee package, which will be available to order starting June 1. Production of the limited-edition Bumblebee 2010 Camaro will run from June 24 to December.

The package will be available on LT and SS models and will feature the Rally Yellow with black Bumblebee stripes and Transformers badging on wheel centers, sill plates and embroidered console lid.

Is the 2010 Camaro’s popularity causing GM headaches? Apparently, the popularity of the 2010 Chevrolet Camaro is causing GM executives some headaches. There is no doubt that the return of the muscle car has generated a huge fan base. GM has taken 18,000 firm orders for the Camaro and has even added a Saturday shift to Oshawa, Ontario, plant where the car is built. Nonetheless, the Camaro is raising some serious questions in Washington about GM’s product development plans. – Financial Times

Saab confirms three bidders, confident it will get more time to restructure: Saab said today that it is certain that the Swedish courts will give it more time to restructure. It confirmed it has narrowed its list of ten bidders to three. It said that one of the potential remaining bidders will acquire the brand by early summer. – CNNMoney

Chevrolet Cruze Safety Car causes crash at FIA WTTC: During a race, safety cars are responsible to slow the pace of racers during a crash. However, at this weekend’s FIA WTTC race in Pau, France, the Chevrolet Cruze Safety Car was responsible for causing a crash; either way, it did slow down the pace of racers.

Jon Moss, a former GM special vehicles manager, and Chris Fesler, a muscle car builder, have teamed to build a limited-edition Fesler-Moss 2010 Chevrolet Camaro.

The 2010 Fesler-Moss Camaro is a limited-edition, track tested model that produces 600-hp. The duo has limited production to just 60 units with prices starting at $60,000 to $150,000 for fully loaded model.

Fesler-Moss will also fit any GM Performance engine into your 2010 Camaro including the LS3, LS7, LS9 and LSX.

Increasing demand for the 2010 Chevrolet Camaro has prompted GM to add June 29 as a scheduled work week at its Oshawa plant. Originally the week was planned to give Oshawa workers some time-off.

According to a report by the Peterborough Examiner, the flex line workers at the plant will also start working overtime on Saturdays starting in June through August.

The 2010 Chevrolet Camaro is on sale now with prices starting at $22,995 for the V6 Camaro and $30,995 for the V8 2010 Camaro SS.

Pontiac not dead… yet: As we all have heard by now, GM is planning to announce the death of Pontiac on Monday. The struggling automaker released a statement today saying that it hasn’t announced any changes to its long-term viability plan. “GM is continuing to review its restructuring plan to go further and faster and best ensure its future success,” GM said in a statement. “Additional information will be released as any decisions are finalized.” – Free Press

Oh, and GM’s plant shutdowns won’t affect the production of the 2010 Chevrolet Camaro – so we’re pretty excited about that. – Inside Line

We almost forgot, Honda’s CEO Takeo Fukui said today that he expects U.S. demand for vehicles to improve later this summer. – Detroit Free Press

We’ll be getting our chance to test drive the 2010 Chevrolet Camaro next month, but for now we’ll have to just sit in front of our laptops and drool over pictures of our favorite muscle car.

Camaro5 member Casey Porter recently posted pics of a silver 2010 Chevrolet Camaro loaded with accessories from GM’s Performance Parts. The silver V6 Camaro features a front-lip spoiler, side skirts, new tailpipes and 21-inch wheels.

It would be a dream come true for every Camaro lover to watch his brand-new Chevrolet Camaro be build in front of his eyes. Well, Rick Hendrick, chairman and CEO of Hendrick Motorsports, is that lucky.

Hendrick made a trip down to Oshawa to pick up his 2010 Chevrolet Camaro in person. His Camaro happened to be the first 2010 Camaro to roll-off the Oshawa assembly line.

Last week, it was all about the launch of the much-anticipated 2010 Chevrolet Camaro. This week, we’ll do our best to tone down the posts about Detroit’s new muscle car but here is one for all you that are looking forward to other variants of the 2010 Camaro.

According Paul A. Eisenstein of The Detroit Bureau, GM will be putting the brakes on the convertible version of the new Camaro. While production was scheduled to begin in about a year, plans have been put on hold due to the collapse of the German company responsible for supplying the convertible top.

“We’re looking to find an alternative source for the top,” Gene Stefanyshyn, Camaro’s Vehicle Line Executive, told the publication. He said that even if GM could lineup a new supplier it would take some time to bring them up to speed. Sources say that the delay could be as long as six months.

As for the Chevrolet Camaro Z28 – we recently heard that the high-performing Camaro is done but GM is holding back from putting it into production According to Stefanyshyn, production of the Camaro Z28 will cost GM too much – that too much equals some $50 million.

Nonetheless, GM isn’t pulling the plug on the Camaro Z28. Stefanyshyn says that engineers are working hard to see if they can cut the cost of development; however, it may be hard to make a business case for such a high-performance model due to GM’s financial situation.

After all the waiting, the 2010 Chevrolet Camaro is finally here. We just received all the details on the new muscle car with all the specs a performance numbers. You can also check out videos of Chevrolet executives that worked on the Camaro giving us a walkaround tour of the new fifth-generation model.

The first video features Anthony McCormack, Engineering Program Manager of the 2010 Chevrolet Camaro. McCormack takes us around GM’s Milford Proving Grounds while giving an in-depth look at the handling of the new Camaro. The second video features Global Vehicle Line Executive Gene Stephanyshyn and Global Chief Engineer Al Oppenheiser. The two give us the details on the specs of the new Chevrolet Camaro. Last but not least, Ed Welburn, GM Vice President of Global Design, give us a walkaround of the vehicle and talks about the design language.

2010 Chevrolet Camaro LS and LT: Power comes from a 3.6 liter direct-injected V6 producing 304-hp and 273 lb-ft of torque. Both models are mated to a 6-speed manual with a 6-speed automatic as an option. 0 to 60 mph comes in a 6.1 seconds. EPA fuel-economy is rated of 18/29 mpg (city/highway). Pricing starts at $22,995.

2010 Chevrolet Camaro SS: Powered by a 6.2 liter LS3 V8 that produces 426-hp and 408 lb-ft of torque when mated to a 6-speed manual and 400-hp and 395 lb-ft of torque when mated to a 6-speed automatic. 0 to 60 mph comes in at 4.7 seconds. Fuel-economy on the automatic Camaro SS is estimated at 16/25 mpg while the manual Camaro SS returns 16/24 mpg. Pricing for the 2010 Chevrolet Camaro SS starts at $30,995.

Deep inside somewhere, we’ve all wanted to own a Chevrolet Camaro – and with the new Camaro being the hottest thing on a set of wheels since the Bugatti (okay at least for me), we are huge fans of the 2010 model year.

We just spent a good amount of hour work day playing with the new Camaro configurator just launched on Chevy’s website. The configurator allows you to pick, customize and view your 2010 Camaro in all of its 360 degree glory.

If you were with us earlier this morning than you know that GM is celebrating the launch of the new 2010 Chevrolet Camaro today. Ed Peper, GM’s North America Vice President for Chevrolet, just blogged about his excitement for over at GM’s FastLane Blog. Besides flaunting the fuel-economy details that we posted earlier this morning, Peper tells us that over 800,000 people have contacted GM ever since the company announced the car was returning for the 2010 model year.

“14,000 of them have already placed an order to buy one when they arrive at Chevy dealer showrooms next month,” Peper said.

Just a few days ago we saw a lot at GM’s Oshawa, Ontario plant filled with 2010 Chevrolet Camaros fresh off the assembly line. Today, GM is marking the launch of the new 2010 Camaro with a bunch of new images and details coming hot off the press. Most importantly of all – General Motors is pitching the 2010 Chevrolet Camaro as “a fun, efficient sports car for the 21st Century.

As most of you know by now, the 2010 Chevrolet Camaro will be available in three trim-levels including LS, LT and SS. The LS and LT are powered by a 3.6L direct-injected V6  that produces 304 horsepower with an EPA fuel-economy rating of 18/29 mpg (city/highway). Two 6.2L V8 engine options are being offered with the 2010 Camaro SS – one with a new L99 automatic and the other with the LS3 on manual. The automatic Camaro SS returns an estimated 16/25 mpg while the manual Camaro SS returns 16/24 mpg.

Both models will be available at dealerships later this month with prices starting at $22,995 for the V6 Camaro and $30,995 for the V8 2010 Camaro SS.

THE 2010 CHEVROLET CAMARO – A FUN, EFFICIENT SPORTS CAR FOR THE 21st CENTURY

DETROIT – The wait is over. After a seven-year hiatus, the new Chevrolet Camaro is now back in dealer showrooms.

Combining great looks, performance and advanced technology, the 2010 Camaro honors its heritage while delivering on customer expectations of a sports coupe for the 21st century.

“The new Camaro delivers a modern, advanced package of performance, comfort and technology,” said Ed Peper, Chevrolet general manager and General Motors vice president. “It’s a personal car for a generation of enthusiasts, both young and old, that honors the Camaro’s heritage with a thoroughly contemporary design.

Built on the new global rear-wheel-drive passenger car platform, Camaro embodies GM’s global vehicle development and design process. The original design concept was conceived in the United States, with engineering shared by both Australia and U.S. teams. Validation was conducted on roads throughout the world and assembly is handled by GM’s award–winning plant in Oshawa, Ontario, Canada.

Design features

With a design that is very close to the original concept, the 2010 Camaro acknowledges its heritage from the first-generation Camaro, produced from 1967 through 1969. The two-door sports coupe features classic proportions over a 112.3-inch (2,852 mm) wheelbase. The overall length of the Camaro is 190.4 inches (4,836 mm); width and height are 75.5 inches (1,918 mm) and 54.2 inches (1,376 mm), respectively.

The long hood and short deck are pushed to the far corners of the muscular fender forms and a fast, 67-degree rake windshield contributes to aerodynamic performance that includes a 0.37 coefficient of drag (Cd) on V-6 models and a slightly sleeker 0.35 Cd on the V-8-powered SS model.

Wheel arch openings received special attention through the design process. Whether the Camaro is equipped with the standard 18-inch, or optional 19-inch or 20-inch wheels, the relationship of the top of the tire and bottom of the fender is consistent on all models. All models also feature the classic “V” design motif in the nose, along with a 2.5-inch (63.5 mm) power dome in the aluminum hood, reminiscent of high-performance Camaro models. On SS models, a simulated air intake is located in the upper front fascia and the lower air intake is larger.

On the top, designers took a cue from Corvette and sculpted twin cockpits across the roof, giving the vehicle a distinctive Chevrolet presence. From the outside, the B-pillar is invisible to the eye, lending the true appearance of a hardtop coupe. The B-pillar is designed to provide increased structural rigidity to the car. And to ensure quality in the manufacturing process, a one-piece body stamping provides a cleaner overall side appearance that is free of seams, gaps or plastic appliqués. “Gills” located in the front of the rear quarter panel also are familiar Camaro styling cues.

Ten exterior colors are available and include Black, Victory Red, Rally Yellow and Silver Ice Metallic. Red Jewel Tintcoat is also available as an option. The color palette also includes Cyber Gray Metallic, Aqua Blue Metallic, Inferno Orange Metallic, White and Imperial Blue Metallic.

An RS appearance package is available on LT and SS. It includes HID headlamps with integrated halo rings, a rear spoiler on LT, specific taillamps and 20-inch wheels with a Midnight Silver finish.

Interior details

Inside the four-passenger cabin, a well-executed balance of heritage, modern design and attention to detail conveys simplicity and refinement with contemporary details in the cluster, switches, dials and lighting. An available ambient light package, for example, offers advanced LED light pipe technology, giving the cabin a distinctive glow.

Deep, recessed gauges, located in square housings outlined in chrome, give a nod to the classic Camaro interior. The instrument panel gauges include both speedometer and engine rpm, with a driver information center located between the large gauges – its readouts and features controlled via a stalk on the steering column. An optional, console-mounted gauge package includes oil pressure, oil temperature, volts and transmission fluid temperature. The gauge package is included on 2LT and 2SS models.

Cloth upholstery is standard and leather-appointed seats are included on 2LT and 2SS models. Four-way manual adjustment including fore/aft and up/down on the driver seat and two-way adjustment on the passenger seat is standard. Heated, leather-trimmed seats with driver six-way power adjustment are optional.

Both LT and SS standard cloth and available leather interior colors are black, gray and beige. The front seat travel is a generous 8.5 inches (216 mm) from front to back. On SS models, the seats feature a distinctive SS logo on the headrest with contrasting stitching. An Inferno Orange interior trim package also will be available with leather interiors.

All models include a three-spoke steering wheel with manual tilt/telescope adjustment. Cruise control and rear defog also are standard, while a leather-wrapped steering wheel and shift knob; redundant steering wheel controls; Bluetooth and USB port are part of the available Driver Convenience and Connectivity package. Also included in the package is remote start on automatic transmission-equipped vehicles, as well as a personal device interface module for iPods.

Soon after production begins, customers will be able to order a short-throw Hurst shifter that provides quick, concise shifting.

Camaro’s entertainment systems include a single-CD radio with six speakers that is standard on LS, LT and SS models. A premium, 245-watt Boston Acoustics nine-speaker audio system can be ordered on 1LT and SS models. XM Satellite Radio is standard on all models.

All models also include power door locks and express up and down driver and passenger window. Cargo capacity can be increased with the standard fold-down rear seat. The capacity of the trunk is 11.3 cubic feet (320 liters).

Safety

The Camaro offers a comprehensive system of safety features – starting with a robust body structure and integral safety cage around the passenger compartment. High-strength steel and ultra high-strength steels are used in key areas throughout the structure. Safety technologies also include:

    – Driver and front passenger dual-stage air bags
    – Driver and front passenger seat-mounted thorax side-impact air bags
    – Head curtain side-impact air bags for front- and rear-seat occupants
    – Front-seat safety belt load limiters and pretensioners
    – A front passenger detection system that senses children and small-stature adults, and suppresses air bag deployment when appropriate.

In both doors, an interlock pin is utilized to prevent intrusion into the passenger compartment and adds stiffness to the door structure by engaging with a clevis bracket set into the rocker panel.

It was reported earlier this year that the production of the 2010 Chevrolet Camaro had been delayed to March 16, 2009. However, Camaro5 forum member “Elvisuperman” has evidence that production of the new Camaros is well under way.

Elvisuperman writes: “In the lot at the Oshawa plant on the South-West corner of Wellington and Stevenson there are rows upon rows of new CAMAROS with stickers in the windows! All I had was my camera phone so forgive the quality of shots…I’ll go back tomorrow during the morning and get better ones if I can…”

Well, he did exactly what he said. Elvisuperman went back the next day and got better pictures which you can check out after the jump.

As General Motors continues to survive on taxpayer’s bailout money, it must be very careful on how and where it spends cash. That includes how the automaker spends money on future products already in the pipeline. According to Motor Trend, the Chevrolet Camaro Z/28 is already done; however, GM has put the Z/28 on hold since it ran out of money to launch the car.

The General has to be very careful where it spends its taxpayer bailout money since a car like the Camaro Z/28, which is expected to return a fuel economy of 13/19 mpg, will most probably be looked down upon during the company’s current financial situation (aka pissing off taxpayers around the nation).

Under the hood of the Chevrolet Camaro Z/28 will be the same 6.2L LSA V8 supercharged engine from the Cadillac CTS-V. It will produce a neck-snapping 556-hp with a peak torque of 551 lb-ft. The Z/28 will also share the 6-speed manual and automatic transmission with the Cadillac CTS-V. 0 to 60 mph is expected come in at 3.9 seconds with a top speed of 193 mph for the manual version.

While all that makes us muscle car fans drool, General Motors will have to stick to building fuel-sippers like the Chevrolet Cruze and the Chevrolet Volt for now. Let’s just hope by the time GM can make the Z/28, the market will still be willing to buy it.

The 2009 Chicago Auto Show press days are underway and the Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen Chevrolet Camaro Bumblebee will be present along with other Autobots. Also on display will be a fully transformed version of Bumblebee.

The GM folks were hard at work yesterday setting up Bumblebee for the big show and we have some pictures of the painstaking process involved in building the 18-foot Bumblebee.

Yes – seeing these pictures as a true Transformers fan is almost like a little kid finding out that there is no such thing as Santa Clause or the tooth fairy.

The Chevrolet Camaro will be making its return as the Official Pace Car of the 51st running of the Daytona 500 making it the first Camaro to pace the field since 1969.

The Chevrolet Camaro Pace Car seen above is an SS variant that carries a 6.2L V8 producing 426-hp. The car comes with a PPG Cyber Grey paint job and an integrated strobe system, including a GM-designed custom light bar using Whelen 500 series linear strobes.

Only two Camaros have paced the field just twice in the Daytona 500 history.
