By: Omar Rana – Editor in Chief.

At the 2008 LA Auto Show, BMW let me have a shot at driving its latest creation – the 2009 MINI Cooper E. I had the chance to spend a half hour with the battery-powered MINI E in downtown LA before I had to return it to BMW. But before I get into the details of my test drive I have to say; driving an electric-car is a totally different experience than driving a car with a normal gasoline engine.

Power comes from a lithium-ion battery pack that feeds power to an electric motor that turns the front wheels pumping out 204-hp with a maximum torque of 162 lb-ft. MINI says that 0 to 60 mph comes in 8.5 seconds with a top speed of 95 mph but driving in downtown LA traffic, I wasn’t able to test out those figures.

Click through to read more and check out the high-res image gallery of the 2009 MINI E test drive.

As I got into the 149th unit of the MINI E (you can tell which of the 500 units you’re driving by the plaque on the side of the car) I felt as if I was sitting in a regular MINI Cooper besides the exterior and interior colors and graphics that scream “I’m not just any Cooper” (not to mention there are no exhaust pipes in the back since this is a zero-emissions vehicle). But everything changed once I slid the key into the ignition and hit the start button. The MINI E is completely and awkwardly silent besides the buzzing/humming noise from the electric-motor during acceleration. You just slide the key in, push start, wait for a little sound that tells you the car is ready to drive, put it in ‘D’, hit the accelerator, and off you go.

There are no gear-changes since there is no engine – and since there is no engine there is no noise. Now some of you may say why would you want to drive a car that requires hardly any involvement from the driver? But there is a big difference here. The 2009 MINI E is fairly zippy. While I didn’t get a chance to do a 0 to 60 mph run or a top speed test – BMW’s claim of an 8.5 second run from rest to 60 is definitely believable. The only difference you’ll notice from its gasoline sibling is that it feels a little heavy due to the 600 pound lithium-ion battery sitting in the back, which not to mention makes the MINI E a two-seater vehicle (total weight is 3,230 pounds compared to a regular MINI Cooper which weight 2,634).

Sit inside the MINI E and you’re welcomed by the same familiar interior of a MINI Cooper. However, the ginormous speedometer in the middle of dashboard features a tiny power-flow gauge replacing the normal placement of the fuel-gauge. The power-flow gauge turns counter clockwise indicating the amount of power going out when you accelerate. The gauge behind the steering wheels has now become a battery level indicator which scared me a little as the percentage-level kept declining during my drive. I took over the MINI E with a 43% charge and I have to admit it’s a bit eerie watching the battery-level percentage decline. It causes you to be a little more worrisome than watching your fuel gauge go from ‘F’ to ‘E’ since when driving a gasoline powered car you just pull into a gas station; but when driving an electric-car, you have to run and find a wall socket to plug it in.

Overall, driving the MINI E was one of the most interesting and unique driving experiences I’ve ever had. The future is coming and it’s coming fast. BMW is leasing 500 units of the MINI E in California, New York and New Jersey for a whopping $850 a month. After a one-year lease, drivers will have to turn over their MINI E to BMW engineers who will examine and run further tests on the electric-car. Of course all this is a part of the process of one day putting the MINI E into mass production and after driving the electric-Cooper I must say that BMW is on the right path.

• 2010 Chevrolet Camaro SS makes us drool. How about you?

• 6.2L V8 with up to 422-hp and 395 lb-ft of torque.

• 0 to 60 mph in 4.6 seconds.

We’re still emptying out our cameras with photos from the 2008 LA Auto Show so you can expect us to keep showing you some more interesting displays from LA. Moving on - believe it or not this was the production 2010 Chevrolet Camaro’s U.S. auto show debut (originally, the production 2010 Camaro models made their auto show debut at the 2008 Paris Motor Show in Oct). Surprisingly, the 2010 Camaro was sitting all the way in the back at the GM display and we’re guessing that’s because GM decided last second not to throw a press conference or even organize the display from their most recent to old products.

Anyway, we’re huge 2010 Camaro fans and the GM folks let us get up-close-and personal with the 2010 Camaro SS displayed here.

• Don’t know manual? Don’t worry – you can still by an Aston Martin DBS.

• 6.0L V12 engine with 510-hp.

• Touchtronic 2 6-speed automatic transmission.

• 0 to 62 mph in 4.3 seconds; top speed comes in at 191 mph.

So you don’t know manual but you have enough money to buy an Aston Martin DBS? Don’t bother learning stick now because Aston Martin has now introduced (well they actually introduced it at the 2008 Paris Motor Show, this is just the U.S. debut of the model), the option of a Touchtronic 2 6-speed automatic transmission derived from the same ZF transaxle unit used in the DB9. The transmission features a final drive ratio from 3.15:1 to 3.46:1. That means it offers quicker acceleration time, improved performance and still offers the performance of a 6-speed manual.

Oh, and there is no gearbox. You can just select Park, Reverse, Neutral and Drive from the dashboard next to the key-fob insert. Pulling either of the leather-trimmed magnesium alloy paddles mounted on the steering will activate Touchtronic mode.

Aston Martin has also added additional features including a new Bang & Olufsen audio system and lightweight 10-spoke 20-inch forged aluminium wheels. Our favorite addition? You can now swap out the rear storage and get rid of the 2+0 arrangement with two rear-seats for 2+2 seating.

The 2010 Lotus Evora has made its stateside debut at the 2008 LA Auto Show. The Evora was built on Lotus’s new Versatile Vehicle Architecture from the Lotus APX concept that allows the automaker to build cars with a gross vehicle weight approaching 4,200 lbs. The 2010 Lotus Evora weighs in at 2,976 lbs.

Lotus says one of Evora’s main roles is to attract new and taller customers. Well, somebody tell Lotus they came to the right country to sell their car. Lotus said that it paid a lot of attention to a wider, taller door apertures and narrower sills that make getting in and out easy.

Getting in and out of an Evora might be easy but getting near an Evora may be tough since Lotus will only make 2,000 units annually. Production of the Evora kicks off in the first-quarter of 2009 with U.S. deliveries to begin in November or December of next year.

Press Release:

LOTUS EVORA NORTH AMERICAN DEBUT

With its stunning visual impact, exhilarating overall dynamic performance, innovative chassis technology and high levels of luxury, packaging and convenience, the Evora makes its North American debut at the Los Angeles Auto Show.

Los Angeles, CA – The first all-new Lotus since the iconic Elise made its debut in 1995, the Evora enters the sports car market as the world’s only mid-engine 2+2. Powered by a Lotus-tuned 3.5-liter V6 engine producing 276 hp, and weighing just 2,976 lbs. (prototype specification), the Evora promises breathtaking performance. During preliminary testing around the famous Nürburgring, the Lotus chassis development engineers report Evora is extremely agile and great fun to drive – even when clad with the full development disguise that hid the beautiful lines from the prying motor industry paparazzi.

In addition to its excellent performance and exemplary handling, the Evora offers a more refined ownership experience than Lotus’s existing smaller four-cylinder models. Evora’s contemporary cabin is elegantly trimmed and its equipment list includes such high-tech features as an advanced touch-screen multi-media system incorporating a state-of-the-art Alpine satellite navigation and audio system. Because one of the roles of the Evora is to attract new customers to the Lotus brand, much attention has been paid to its ease of use. Wider, taller door apertures and narrower sills make getting in and out of the cabin a less athletic undertaking than it is in Lotus’s smaller sports cars (the Elise, Exige and 2-Eleven), while the design of the cabin itself will accommodate two 99th percentile (6ft 5in tall) American males in the front seats.

The ‘convenience factor’ of the Evora extends to less obvious areas of the car. For instance, beneath the skin the entire front-end structure is a high tech aluminium sacrificial modular sub-frame unit, attached to the main extruded aluminium tub. This modular unit is designed to deform for maximum safety, and to reduce repair costs in the event of a frontal impact.

The Evora has been designed with global automotive regulations in mind, and in preparation for future variants that are planned including a convertible. The Evora will be hand-crafted and built on a dedicated new assembly line within Lotus’s advanced manufacturing facility at Hethel in the east of England. Capacity limitations will restrict production to approximately 2,000 cars a year, ensuring the dynamic new sports car’s rarity and exclusivity.

Mike Kimberley, CEO of Group Lotus plc, has this to say about the exciting new model: “The Evora is the biggest milestone Lotus has achieved since the Elise was born 13 years ago and is part of our bold five-year strategic plan, which includes the introduction of new cars and technologies to many more markets around the world. The Evora also represents Lotus core values of performance through light weight and efficiency and proves that you can have phenomenal performance, fuel-efficiency elegant design and practicality all in a class leading mid-engine 2+2 sports car, which will meet global safety and homologation standards.”

Mike Kimberley continues, “Looking to the future, we will continue to research, develop and produce lighter, more efficient vehicles which are linked to our extensive work on all aspects of future fuels, alternative engines and electric and hybrid vehicle propulsion systems. We all have an environmental responsibility to future generations and the Evora is our latest proof that Lotus’ value of “performance through light weight” improves the efficiency and sustainability of the automobile.”

KIA MOTORS UNVEILS NEXT GENERATION FUEL CELL ELECTRIC VEHICLE
Revolutionary Borrego FCEV Debuts at Los Angeles International Auto Show

• World premiere for new Borrego FCEV
• New technologies boost performance of fuel cell electric vehicle

LOS ANGELES, Nov. 20, 2008 – Kia Motors Corporation’s (KMC) Fuel Cell Electric Vehicle (FCEV) program takes a major technological step forward today with the global unveiling of the all-new Kia Borrego FCEV at the Los Angeles International Auto Show.

Numerous innovations including a higher output 154 horsepower fuel cell and a new 450-volts Supercapacitor give the Borrego FCEV higher performance, a greatly extended driving range and cold-weather starting capability to operate in sub-zero temperatures.

Available with two and three tank systems with 70MPa pressure, the Borrego FCEV’s power plant is located under the center floor and boasts an additional 47 horsepower of power to produce a peak output of 154 horsepower (a 44-percent increase compared to the previous generation) and propel the vehicle to a top speed of 100 miles per hour (mph) while boasting a best-in-class system efficiency of 62 percent. With a 202-liter hydrogen storage tank located underneath the vehicle and ahead of the rear wheels, this latest Kia Motors research vehicle has a range of about 426 miles.

“Entering this new phase of our program is really exciting,” said Dr. Hyun Soon Lee, president of research and development for the Hyundai-Kia Automotive Group. “Now we will be able to build fuel cell electric vehicles in higher volumes and lower cost for fleet testing and the latest Borrego FCEV drives us closer to making fuel cell vehicles available for consumers.”

Demonstrating its ability to conduct engineering of both gasoline/diesel production models and fuel cell research vehicles simultaneously, Kia Motors will be able to significantly improve the efficiency and quality control of future fuel cell vehicle manufacturing processes.

With the use of lightweight aluminum body shell components, the Borrego FCEV has a power-to-weight ratio that is similar to the new production model SUV. The FCEV also retains the roomy cabin, low noise levels and overall driving refinement of its new gasoline/diesel-powered sibling.

Press Release:

Hyundai HED-5 “i-Mode” Concept Makes North American Debut at Los Angeles Auto Show with new Eco-friendly powertrain

2.0-liter, Four-cylinder Turbo Engine with Gasoline Direct Injection Approved for U.S. Market Intro in 2010

LOS ANGELES, Nov. 19, 2008 – Hyundai unveiled the HED-5 “i-Mode” concept at the 2008 Los Angeles Auto Show today, featuring an all-new, eco-friendly powertrain making its first-ever appearance for Hyundai. The six-passenger family crossover, which debuted at the Geneva Motor Show earlier this year, combines visionary styling with future technologies and advanced eco-dynamics.

For its North American debut, Hyundai added a turbocharged 2.0-liter, four-cylinder engine with state-of-the-art Gasoline Direct Injection (GDI) that improves efficiency and reduces emissions. The HED-5 i-Mode concept and the new powerplant, called the Theta Turbo GDI, have been green lighted for the U.S. market. Variants of the engine will appear in various Hyundai models. Timing and specifications for a production version of a family crossover similar to HED-5 i-Mode are currently in development.

HED-5 “i-Mode” Concept Highlights

- Six-seater monocab design
- World debut of turbocharged 2.0-liter, four-cylinder engine with Gasoline Direct Injection
- High-end materials and advanced eco-dynamics
- Unique Swivel Seat concept
- Futuristic communications and entertainment system
“The HED-5 i-Mode concept provides a glimpse into the future of travel, incorporating innovative weight-saving technologies, a modern fuel-efficient four-cylinder direct injection turbo, and a flexible interior package,” said John Krafcik, vice president, Product Development and Strategic Planning, Hyundai Motor America.

All-new Theta Turbo GDI

For the U.S. market, the HED-5 i-Mode reveals a first-ever powerplant for Hyundai, the Theta Turbo GDI. The 2.0-liter, four-cylinder engine uses gasoline direct injection technology. By injecting the fuel directly inside the cylinder in small, precise amounts, the performance and response of the engine improve thanks to the intake charge cooling. Both fuel efficiency and exhaust emissions improve due to the improved combustion. Combine GDI with turbo charging and the result is exceptional power output. The engine has capacity for up to 286 horsepower, greater than most six-cylinder engines on the market, while improving fuel economy by 15-20 percent. The Theta Turbo GDI includes Continuously Variable Valve Timing (CVVT) to further improve efficiency. This ultra-efficient, high-tech gasoline engine will be fitted in various Hyundai models in future model years.
HED-5 Cross-industry Collaboration Drives Packaging and Technology Advancements

Hyundai continues cross-industry cooperation to speed new technologies to market through such partners as Bayer MaterialScience AG, Keiper and LG Electronics. The cooperation with Bayer MaterialScience enabled the complex curvature and radical design of the HED-5 to be implemented sooner. The materials used are lighter and more adaptable than the metal and glass they replace. This, in combination with a light-weight body construction, reduces fuel consumption and CO2 emissions. “Self-healing,” water-based finishes from Bayer add another environmentally friendly twist to the vehicle and even let minor scratches appear to “magically” disappear, saving the need for costly repair.

Through the advanced multimedia and entertainment concept developed by LG Electronics, the vehicle becomes an extension of the digital home allowing passengers to stay connected, communicate, and interact in the car and beyond. Access to the Web, video games, movies or video phones are possible through the pop-down touch-screen displays and Webcams located in the overhead console. A wireless network, cable-free keyboards, game controllers, and headphones further personalize the entertainment experience.

Hyundai’s engineering partner, Keiper, supported the HED-5 i-Mode project with the exclusive world premiere of its new and unique Swivel Seat concept. The first-row passenger seat flips to face second- and third-row occupants. Additionally, the second-row bench slides rearward to increase comfort and create a social space for communication.

The i-Mode Design

An innovative mechanism enables the sliding door to be free from conventional inner and outer guide rails. When the doors are opened, the lack of a B-pillar enables a feeling of space and remarkable accessibility to the generous interior.

The Hyundai design team worked extensively with new composite materials to enable unconventional and irregular shapes. The architecture of the HED-5 i-Mode is supported by an external frame protecting the space within, like a shell. In cooperation with Bayer MaterialScience, the HED-5 i-Mode is the first vehicle to feature the new “BayVision” glazing system and Collimator headlight lenses made from Makrolon®. This innovative glazing alternative enables extended transparent areas, further reducing weight.

Through the innovative door opening mechanism, the interior of the HED-5 i-Mode reveals an inviting landscape of softly sculpted shapes and advanced technology. The first step into the vehicle reveals the elegant application of natural materials. Soft, silky leather in warm and natural brown tones provides a level of comfort normally reserved for the home. Attention is immediately drawn to the seats, which offer first-class comfort combining a modern, floating look with innovative functionality, enabling the occupants to experience the lounge atmosphere without the limitations of a conventional automotive interior layout.

The 2010 Cadillac CTS Sport Wagon is one of the 15 products to be launched before 2010 seeing as GM doesn’t delay anymore product launches. The CTS Sport Wagon made its original auto show debut at the 2008 Paris Motor Show and has come to the stateside for the first time at the 2008 LA Auto Show. Even though, GM didn’t hold a press conference, the CTS Sport Wagon took center stage at the Cadillac display.

It is rumored that GM is considering a CTS-V Sport Wagon to compete with the BMW M5 Wagon and Mercedes-Benz C-63 AMG Wagon. However, we highly doubt GM will be investing any of its money on gas-guzzling (or maybe even useless) models anytime soon.

We spotted the new Dodge EV hanging out in the Chrysler area at the 2008 LA Auto Show and thought we’d snap some pics of the car’s first auto show appearance that went overlooked. According to a previous report by Automotive News, Chrysler has plans to team up with Lotus to produce the Dodge EV.

The production model is expected to be fully-electric and will provide a range of 150 to 200 miles on a single charge. No word on where Chrysler and Lotus stand now with the current financial condition of Chrysler LLC, but we’d love to see this car on the roads very soon.

Ford is not shy at all to call out the Toyota Camry Hybrid as its main rival for its two new mid-size sedans unveiled here at the 2008 LA Auto Show. The 2010 Ford Fusion Hybrid and the 2010 Mercury Milan Hybrid are powered by a two-motor hybrid system developed by Delphi Corp. and Ford’s new 175-hp, 2.5-liter 4-cylinder engine.

Ford has put in quite in effort to differentiate the Fusion Hybrid and Milan Hybrid from its gas-powered siblings including a its signature “road and leaf” badging on both sides and the rear of the vehicle, 17-inch eight-spoke wheels, seat fabric made from post-industrial 100 percent recycled materials; and a standard 110-volt power outlet.

The 2010 Ford Fusion hybrid and the 2010 Mercury Milan Hybrid will arrive in showrooms in the first quarter of 2009. Stand by for pricing info.

Honda announced today that it will debut its new Ecological Drive Assist System (Eco Assist) on its 2009 Honda Insight Hybrid when it debuts in spring 2009. Eco Assist works kind of like Ford’s EcoGuide feature by combining multiple functions to help the driver optimize fuel-efficiency.

“Hybrid drivers enjoy trying to get the most fuel economy from their vehicles,” said Dan Bonawitz, vice president of American Honda Motor Co., Inc. “The visual nature of Eco Assist is intended to help drivers improve their efficient driving skills by making the hybrid experience more fun and rewarding.”

Right - so what does Honda categorize as fun and exciting? ECON mode is activated by the “ECON” button on the instrument panel. Once activated, it will adjust control of the transmission, engine and other powertrain elements and air conditioner operation. While all this will help increase battery charging during regenerative braking, you won’t ever see us using ECON mode. You just have to ask yourself – are you really that concerned about fuel-economy or do you just want to get from point A to point B in hybrid since you care a little for the environment and for your wallet.

Press Release:

Honda Insight to Introduce Ecological Drive Assist System in Spring 2009

Driver feedback system designed for fun and economy

American Honda Motor Co., Inc., today announced that a new interactive, driver-focused fuel economy enhancement technology named the Ecological Drive Assist System (Eco Assist™) will debut on the new Honda Insight in spring 2009.

The Honda Insight Concept, making its North American debut at the Los Angeles Auto Show, provides a strong indication of the design and styling of the all-new gasoline-electric hybrid model from Honda.

Eco Assist combines multiple functions: the driver-activated ECON mode that optimizes control of the continuously variable transmission, engine and related powertrain components to conserve fuel; and a feedback function that uses speedometer background color to provide real-time guidance on environmentally responsible driving. An economy scoring function further provides feedback about current driving techniques, as well as feedback on cumulative, long-term driving style.

Honda developed the powertrain control, driver guidance and driver feedback functions of Eco Assist to help enhance real-world fuel economy. In particular, the scoring function provides cumulative, long-term feedback through graphic ‘leaves,’ which grow over time as drivers learn and implement driving practices that increase fuel economy.

Activated by a green “ECON” button on the instrument panel, ECON mode optimizes control of the transmission, engine and other powertrain elements to conserve fuel. ECON mode also adjusts air conditioner operation, increases the potential for engaging the idle stop feature sooner and increase battery charging during regenerative braking.

The guidance function uses the speedometer background’s color-changing, three-dimensional appearance to indicate fuel efficiency in real time. Fuel-saving activities like smooth acceleration and braking make the meter glow green. Somewhat less efficient driving makes the meter glow blue-green. Aggressive starts and stops that consume extra fuel make the meter glow blue. By observing the speedometer background’s response to driving practices and seeking to achieve a consistently green color, drivers can receive assistance in developing driving habits that typically enhance fuel economy.

The scoring function provides feedback about current driving practices, as well as cumulative, long-term feedback tracking progress. Located in the center of the instrument panel of the all-new Insight, the Multi-Information Display offers drivers a selection of informational displays, including the scoring function, in which the number of ‘leaves’ displayed indicates the level of environmentally responsible driving performance. When the ignition switch is on, the display scores driving practices in real time. When the ignition switch is turned off, the ‘leaves’ in the top line of the display score driving in the just completed cycle (startup to shutdown), while a horizontal bar in the lower part of the display scores cumulative lifetime performance.

The Multi-Information Display also allows drivers to view fuel economy figures for the past three trips, as well as instantaneous and average fuel economy statistics. The scoring function encourages drivers to take an interest in developing fuel efficient driving habits over the long term.

Going on sale in North America next spring, the all-new, purpose-built Insight will come to market at a price significantly below that of hybrids available today. From this unique position in the marketplace, the Insight will advance the affordability and accessibility of hybrid technology to a new generation of buyers.

With its affordable price, the new hybrid vehicle will represent the best value in its segment. Along with the Civic Hybrid, the new vehicle will be produced at an expanded hybrid vehicle production line at the Suzuka factory in Japan.
The Insight is expected to have annual global sales of 200,000 units per year -approximately 100,000 in North America. Following the launch of the new Insight, Honda also plans to introduce another unique sporty hybrid vehicle based on the CR-Z, a concept car first shown at the 2007 Tokyo Motor Show.

The original Honda Insight was introduced in December 1999 as North America’s first gas-electric hybrid car. The original Insight was designed from the ground up to demonstrate the ultimate potential for fuel-economy in a two-seater subcompact automobile.

A leader in the development of cleaner, more fuel-efficient mobility products, Honda was the first to market low-emission gasoline vehicles, a gasoline-electric hybrid car in North America, and the world’s first EPA-certified hydrogen fuel-cell vehicle, the FCX. In 2007, Honda was named “greenest automaker” by the Union of Concerned Scientists for the fourth straight time.

Press Release:

World Debut of New, More Powerful 2009 Porsche Boxster and Cayman Models in Los Angeles

For the first time at a U.S. auto show, Porsche brings its original, 60-year- old sports car, Porsche No. 1, and 550 Spyder

LOS ANGELES, Nov. 19 /PRNewswire/ — Marking a worldwide premiere, Porsche today pulled the wraps off its new-generation 2009 Boxster and Cayman models at a press conference at the Greater Los Angeles Auto Show. Reminding everyone of the long historical roots of these modern cars, the German sports car maker also displayed the first car to don the Porsche name, affectionately known as Porsche No. 1, as well as the company’s first-ever race car, the 550 Spyder, which is on loan from the collection of Jerry Seinfeld. Both are among the most historically significant sports cars of their eras and represent Porsche’s first mid-engine designs — the same engine configurations now thoroughly refined in both the new Boxster and Cayman.

The new Boxster — the famous two-seat roadster first launched by Porsche in 1997 — and its mid-engine coupe sibling, the Cayman — which debuted in 2006 — offer more powerful flat-six boxer engines, which are even more fuel efficient than the powerplants they replace. On the outside, the Boxster and Cayman also receive subtle, yet very distinct, refinements that update the classic sports car design of both automobiles individually. Both add new standard and optional features for the 2009 model year.

The new 2009 Boxster and Cayman models go on sale in the U.S. in March of next year. 2009 Boxster pricing in the U.S. starts at $45,800 for the base version, $55,700 for the Boxster S, $49,400 for the base Cayman and $59,100 for the Cayman S.

“Today is our first presentation of the new 2009 mid-engine sports cars, and here is the right place,” said Detlev von Platen, President and CEO of Porsche Cars North America. “We wanted to celebrate their worldwide premiere here in Los Angeles since it is, by far, the city with the highest population of Boxsters and Caymans anywhere.”

For the first time, the Boxster S and the Cayman S use Porsche’s new direct fuel injection (DFI) and all versions of these models can be ordered with the company’s innovative 7-speed double-clutch gearbox PorscheDoppelkupplung (PDK). PDK is a race-inspired technology that is essentially two transmissions in one: it combines the driving convenience of an automatic with the sporty and fuel efficient operation of manual gearshifts by employing two fully automated parallel clutches. It can be driven as a full automatic or it can be shifted manually via paddles on the steering wheel or through the shift knob. The result is more power with improved fuel efficiency, a development that helps Porsche meet today’s demands for reducing environmental impact, yet maintain the brand’s performance persona.

“Our mantra at the research and development is that every new model has to outperform its predecessor and does so by offering significant fuel savings,” said Wolfgang Durheimer, Board Member in Charge of Research and Development, Porsche AG. “Both Boxster and Cayman pass this test with flying colors: not

only are they noticeably quicker and more responsive, they are at the same time even more frugal than the cars they replace.”

The new base engine in these models is a 2.9 liter flat six cylinder that develops 255 hp in the Boxster and 265 hp in the Cayman, representing an increase in power of 10 hp and 20 hp, respectively, over the preceding models. The 3.4 liter power unit in the S versions, which benefits from Porsche’s Direct Fuel Injection (DFI), now delivers 310 hp in the Boxster S and 320 hp in the Cayman S.

The universally hailed mid-engine concept used in the new Boxster and Cayman models has a long history at Porsche; this heritage is on display in L.A. with the first Porsche from 1948, a one-of-a-kind, mid-engine two-seat sports car lovingly called Porsche No. 1, as well as a historic, mid-engine Porsche 550 Spyder, the first Porsche car specifically designed for racing. Company founder Dr. Ferdinand ‘Ferry’ Porsche developed and built the Porsche No. 1, or as it is officially known, the Type 356-001, in Gmund, Austria, after he searched and was unable to find the car of his dreams 60 years ago.

“Look at his (Ferry Porsche’s) first Porsche of 1948 and his quest for the pure sports car,” said Klaus Berning, Board Member in charge of Sales and Marketing, Porsche AG. “It is a simple, yet rather sophisticated design, and it is a blueprint for an idea that would decades later become the highly successful Boxster: its revolutionary mid-engine concept together with a functional, aerodynamic roadster design, lightweight and a small, highly efficient engine resulted in a sports car that was nimble, responsive and quick, and it rewarded its inventor with sheer driving pleasure — a rare quality in those days.”

Another extraordinary car on display is the Porsche 550 Spyder — a car that was introduced in 1953 at the Paris Motor Show and later became the mid- engine inspiration for the modern Boxster. The car began in 1951 as a small Porsche 356 Spyder that was created and raced by Walter Glockler; several years later, the factory decided to build such a car, making it the first Porsche designed specifically for use in auto racing.

The 550 became known as Spyder or RS, and was the first of Porsche’s formidable mid-engine race cars, giving Porsche its first overall win in a major sports car racing event, the 1956 Targa Florio. Several class wins at Le Mans 24-hour event, and wins throughout Europe helped the 550 become a legend in the motorsports world. With over 70 examples produced, the 550 RS Spyder marked the beginning of Porsche’s customer race car program that has grown to become a worldwide success.

This 1955 550 RS Spyder is on loan from the special collection of Jerry Seinfeld.
