Meet the most power Astra ever. Opel today took the covers off of the new Astra OPC, a sporty compact hatch that will be available in the summer of 2012 in countries across the European continent.

“The whole chassis of the sports car is designed to deliver power, without comprise,” Opel said in a statement. “In line with the finest OPC traditions, the car was put through its paces and polished on the Northern Loop (“Nordschleife”) of the Nurburgring race track in Germany under the supervision of the Opel brand ambassador Joachim (“Jockel”) Winkelhock. It is geared especially towards lateral dynamics and superb handling qualities. The high tech front-wheel suspension, HiPerStrut (High Performance Strut) of the Astra GTC helps to achieve this.”

Power for the Opel Astra OPC comes from a 2.0 liter direct injection turbo gasoline engine making 280-hp and 295 lb-ft of torque. While no 0 to 62 mph figures is given, Opel says that the Astra OPC hits a top speed of 155 mph.

“We have devised a great package that will convince even the most experienced sports drivers – not just on the Nürburgring,” the motorsport legend, Winkelhock , explains. The high performance brake system made by the prestigious manufacturer, Brembo, ensures good deceleration stats and maximum stability, even in moments of intense pressure.

I want one – in the United States – now.

The Fleet World MPG Marathon had an unexpected competitor take the champion title. For the Eco-marathon, where diesels, hybrids, and the like go up against each other, its a bit surprising that a 432-hp car was even in the race. What’s no so surprising is that the Vauxhall VXR8 won with that kind of power in this segment.

The 6.2-liter V8 was not the most fuel efficient, but for official fuel consumption it showed the most improvement. Fuel consumption was at 17.4 mpg originally, and was decreased by 53% to 26.7mpg.

Chris Mooney, Top Gear Online editor was behind the wheel for the 2 day long run along with Vauxhall archivist Andrew Duerden. Mooney says “It just goes to show that the person behind the wheel can make a massive difference to fuel costs and carbon emissions..And of course, that a 6.2-liter V8 is a very sensible choice of engine in the right hands.”

Pretty impressive.

Vauxhall and Opel released an electronic concept at the Frankfurt Motor Show that has a lot of potential for production.

The two brand’s RAK e concept is a two-seater electric car that can go 0-62mph in less than 13 seconds, has a top speed of 75 mph, and can travel for 60 miles. Even though Vauxhall opted for steel over more common lighter materials for this type of vehicle, it still only weighs about 838 lbs.

Along with steel, Vauxhall-Opel’s boss Nick Reilly says the rest of the RAK e is composed of ‘a strategic choice of composite materials’, and was made ‘with production in mind’. For example, with its tiny rear axle, the car has two rear wheels versus four to help with stability and carry the weight of a passenger.

Click here for our original post on the Opel RAK e.

This concept may be the cost-effective solution the brand has been trying to reach, after scrapping its last electric concept. It still presents its challenges, however it can potentially sell for approximately $12,400, which is much less than the average conventional car’s electronic counterpart.

Reilly says “We want to show it to a few governments and see if they’re serious about EV’s. If they are, and Vauxhall can overcome the technological and manufacturing challenges posed by this car, we could very likely see it as an unusual sister EV to the Ampera.”

The brands say that the striking concept has ‘production potential’ that “could revolutionise urban transport, especially for younger drivers and those on a very tight budget.”

Known as the Vauxhall / Opel RAK e Concept has the ability to travel 60 miles on a full charge with a top speed of 75 mph.

“Yet despite its aesthetic appeal, the concept will be practical, affording two seats in a tandem layout, and its light weight – around a third of a small modern car’s – would allow it to be agile and fun to drive,” Vauxhall / Opel said in a statement.

More details to come next week during the 2011 Frankfurt Motor Show.

Vauxhall is wrapping up development on its debut for the city car market, called the Junior, and is expected for release in the beginning of 2013. The tiny car is comparable in size to the Mini, at 3.7 meters long, making the Junior competition for it, and the Fiat 500.

GM was ready to scrap the idea, but ended up going with the plan after CEO Nick Reilly pointed out how the other small cars are taking off successfully.

The car’s visual features set it apart from other models the brand features, and had wide tracks, a short wheelbase, an arched roofline, and convex rear window. It also features 3 doors and more spacious interior than others in its segment.

In addition to the interior space, the inside comes with a variety of color and finish options, but remains simplistic.

Diesel and petrol motors will both be available, with a battery-powered version expected for 2015. Currently there are only three-cylinder versions for the engines, but more power may be an option by the time it hits showrooms.

Once the car goes on sale, it will have a different name that is yet to be released, although more details should become available at September’s Frankfurt motor show.

General Motors said that it plans to move struggling Opel more upmarket in Europe, while bringing in Chevrolet as a its entry-level brand into the market.

During a presentation to analysts in Detroit yesterday, GM CEO Dan Akerson and Chief Marketing Officer Joel Ewanick, said that GM will try to use Opel’s German heritage to connect with consumers and compete with brands like Volkswagen.

They admitted that Chevrolet, which was relaunched in Europe in 2005, will have a difficult time becoming its sole entry-level brand in Europe.

“This is a market where Chevrolet will always have a difficult time penetrating,” Ewanick said.

Akserson said that Opel only needs to grow slightly to compete in Europe, specifically Germany.

“Where we lost most of our market share in the five years leading up to the bankruptcy is in Germany, so we need to revitalize that brand,” Akerson said. “We’ve done it with Buick in North America. We need to grow market share with Opel by only a couple of percent because I believe we’re on the cusp.”

According to estimated registration data from ACEA covering 28 European countries, during the first six months of 2011, Opel/Vauxhall sales were up 2 percent to 549,125 units. Chevrolet sales fell 1 percent in Europe to 92,061.

It was reported earlier in June that General Motors’ CEO Dan Akerson has been in favor of selling Opel in the past and is currently fed up with the German brand. But things at Opel may not be as bad as the look. According to GM Europe’s President Nick Reilly, Opel/Vauxhall are on track or ahead for their second quarter earnings.

“We release our second-quarter earnings in July and we are on track, in fact we’re ahead of track,” Reilly said. “Things are going ok.”

Opel/Vauxhall lost $1.6 billion in 2010 and is GM’s only money-losing part. The brand is expected to return to profitability next year.

It was recently reported by German media the GM is considering selling Opel and that Volkswagen and China’s Beijing Automotive Industry Holding Co. could be potential buyers.

Opel has been on a roll revamping their lineup and the latest and greatest Astra and Insignia are both examples that have much potential of reinvigorating the brand’s appeal. Not too long ago, Opel announced that it will be coming out with a new large crossover that will go against the likes of the new Citroen DS5 crossover that was unveiled at this year’s Shanghai Auto Show.

“The Opel [Vauxhall] brand can’t content itself with the Insignia,” said Karl-Friedrich Stracke, head of Vauxhall’s sister brand Opel, “we need a car that has greater global appeal than the current Ford Mondeo rival,” he continued.

These new efforts will revive Opel/Vauxhall’s FLV plans, or Future Large Vehicle, which was terminated in 2008 from the global recession.

The other driving forces for these projects is China’s potential market as successful sales have been proven from the popularity of large cars from mainstream manufacturers in the skyrocketing Asian country. Citroen and Peugeot have both decided to launch a production version of its SxC Concept, which is what caused Vauxhall and Opel to follow.

No other details of the new crossover were released other than it will be based off of the Insignia’s platform, will feature a luxurious and flexible seven-seat cabin, and a raised ride height with either front- or all-wheel drive.

Depending on the success of the model, the new crossover could also find its way into US dealers as a Buick since the Opel Astra, Insignia, and Antara are both sold as such under the names of Verano, Regal, and Enclave.

The new Opel / Vauxhall Astra GTC is a handsome looking car. Even the last generation was by all means not too poor of a looker either. But as soon as they chopped off the roof to make the Astra CC, it feminized the hatch a little way too much. Where as the directly completive Volkswagen Eos was more manageable, the Astra just looked better as a hatch. Now though, the new Astra convertible might step up the game.

It is now reported that the convertible version of the Opel/Vauxhall Astra will favor a folding soft top rather than a hardtop like the previous generation. With its announcement, the company also leaked some sketches of the new car to hint at its looks.

Click here for our original post on the 2012 Opel Astra GTC.

It definitely maintains the proportions of other cars in its class, such as the aforementioned Eos and others like the Peugeot 207 CC. But combined with the looks of the latest Astra and it seems like we might have a pretty good lookin’ car.

The sketch also reveals that there will be a four-seater layout and is said to share its main backbone with the sedan Astra and will have the same wheelbase. The rear looks to be lengthened to maintain trunk space while the top is down as well.

The biggest problem with these compact convertibles is that since there’s no roof, the chassis can sometimes become a bit wobbly, resulting in a sub-par driving experience. Let’s up the boffins at Astra can keep the chassis stiff enough to maintain the Astra hatch’s well-mannered driving composure.

General Motors Opel and Vauxhall have finally unveiled the new Astra GTC three-door sport hatchback, which will debut at the 2011 Frankfurt Motor Show later this year. A huge step up from the past Astra models, the new 2012 Opel Astra GTC stands out with a new aggressive design and strong driving capabilities (at least according to Opel/Vauxhall).

“The Astra GTC is the sporty member of the Opel family,” says Karl-Friedrich Stracke, Chief Executive Officer of Opel/Vauxhall. “It has been designed and engineered in our facilities in Rüsselsheim to be a highly desirable sports coupé with invigorating driving performance while remaining affordable, roomy and flexible. We’re convinced that it will bring a breath of fresh air into the sports compact segment”.

Power for the 2012 Opel Astra GTC comes from a choice of four engines – one diesel and three gasoline units:

Opel Astra GTC 2.0 CDTI: 2.0L common-rail turbo diesel making 165-hp and 280 lb-ft of torque. 0 to 62 mph comes in 8.9 seconds with a top speed of 130 mph. Estimated fuel-economy comes in at 48 mpg.

Opel Astra GTC 1.4 Turbo: Two output levels ranging from 120-hp and 140-hp. Both mated to 6-speed manual.

Opel Astra GTC 1.6 Turbo: 180-hp mated to a 6-speed manual with a top speed of 136 mph.

Opel said that additional powertrain choices will be announced at the 2011 Frankfurt Motor Show. The Opel Astra GTC OPC will arrive in 2012.

The major highlight for the 2012 Opel Astra GTC, regardless of the powertrain and trim level, is a feature usually available in high-end sports cars – front suspension with High Performance Strut (HiPerStrut). When compared to a standard McPherson suspension from the Astra the HiPerStrut has reduced kingpin inclination and offset and a shorter spindle length. The system improves grip and handling of the Opel Astra GTC.

Prices for the 2012 Opel Astra GTC range from 21,750 ($31,732 USD) euro for the Astra GTC Enjoy 1.4 Turbo to 27,855 ($40,639 USD) euro for the Astra GTC Sport 2.0 CDTI.

Here’s to hoping that Buick gets its own Astra GTC in the United States – heck, let’s have a poll. Would you like to see a Buick version of the Opel Astra GTC in the U.S.? Cast your vote in the poll below.

Press Release:

New Opel Astra GTC: Sharp Looks, Sharp Drive

Stunning design: Sports Coupé with dramatic proportions and road-planted stance

Exclusive chassis layout: All GTC versions receive the high performance front strut

Perfect for everyday use: Roomy, flexible and packed with innovative technologies

Rüsselsheim. Opel will have a busy fall this year with the introduction of three new icons: the revolutionary electric Ampera with extended range capabilities, the new generation Zafira Tourer flexibility master, and the Astra GTC three-door sports compact. The Astra GTC will have its world premiere at the 64thInternational Motor Show in Frankfurt am Main, September 15 – 25, 2011.

The new Astra GTC stands out with sharp design and driving capabilities. On the outside, sculpted shapes with precise accents add drama to clean, sweeping coupé lines. And on the road, all Astra GTC versions benefit from a premium front axle layout with HiPerStrut – High Performance Strut – that ideally combines with the clever Opel patented Watt’s link rear axle to provide unmatched stability and the sharpest driving precision. Only very few, radical sporty cars in the segment offer such a sophisticated front axle architecture.

The GTC is the ultimate Astra in design and driving dynamics. Accounting for 15 to 20% of all Astra sales, it will further energize the successful Opel compact family, which increased its segment share in from 8.3% in 2009 to 11.4% in 2010.

Muscular body design structured by sharp tendon lines

The new Astra GTC is very much inspired by the Opel GTC Paris Concept revealed last fall at the Mondial de l’Automobile in . A compact, sporty five-seater with coupé appeal and dramatic proportions, the Astra GTC has a unique design: it does not share any exterior element with other members of the Astra family, except for the outside rear view mirror housing and the rod antenna. Six of the seven 17- to 20-inch wheel designs on offer are also GTC-only features.

“We wanted the Astra GTC to be the ultimate expression of Opel’s design language ‘sculptural artistry meets German precision’ and to embody our passion for the automobile,” says Mark Adams, Vice President, Opel/Vauxhall Design. “However, we did not want emotion to overshadow functionality: the Astra GTC is a clever and affordable dream car.”

In profile, the designers have maximized drama by limiting the amount of lines: just three create tension and sculpt the shape of the Astra GTC. A fine, crisp line that sweeps downward from the front door to the bottom of the rear fender and energizes the body side, the Opel signature blade is introduced in the same direction as in the Insignia. A second line encapsulates the door handle and stretches to the rear, emphasizing the GTC’s dramatic stance by spreading the surfaces to a fine undercut and a broad shoulder. The third line following the clean, sporty silhouette of the roof is finished in chrome and accentuates the window graphic, which guides the eye to the sharply integrated spoiler.

The clean front features Opel’s typical centerline crease and is accented by intense, slim eagle-eye designed headlamps featuring “wing-shaped” daytime running light graphics. These act as parentheses around the refined chrome emblem bar and the separate, dramatic trapezoidal grille, which is placed lower for a race track feel that hints at a sporty character.

The shoulder section is the most dramatic area of the Astra GTC. Its powerful design gives the car imposing proportions and a very purposeful road presence in highlighting its low, wide road-holding stance. The line from the C-pillar slides into the tail and curls around into the rear spoiler, which is ingeniously integrated into the continuing roof line. Optional LEDs highlight the stretched “wing-shaped” motif of the tail lamps.

Exclusive high-tech front suspension layout sharpens steering feel

The Astra GTC mechatronic chassis features an exclusive, high-tech front suspension architecture, similar to the one of the Insignia OPC, that improves handling performance and provides the sharper steering demanding drivers expect in a sporty-looking car.

Compared to the five-door Astra, the ride height of the GTC is lowered by 15 mm while the basic dimensions of the chassis slightly increase. Due to extended control arms in the rear, the wheelbase grows by 10 mm, from 2,685 to 2,695 mm. Both tracks are wider, at 1,584 mm (+ 40 mm) in front and 1,588 mm (+ 30 mm) in the rear. This allows for the accommodation of sporty wheels with enhanced tire diameter, which improve both stability, road stance and visual impact.

The major change, however, is not visible to the naked eye. All Astra GTC versions, regardless of the powertrain and trim level, are fitted with an extra feature, normally only available in high-end sports cars: front suspension with High Performance Strut (HiPerStrut). Compared to the standard McPherson suspension from the Astra, HiPerStrut has reduced kingpin inclination and offset and a shorter spindle length. This improves wheel guidance and grip, reduces torque steering reactions and increases cornering power, offering Astra GTC drivers the sporty, crisp feel they expect, with enhanced precision and feedback.

In addition, HiPerStut reduces tire flops, which allows the car to accommodate larger-diameter wheels. This up-level layout that glues the car to the road guarantees driving excitement to all GTC drivers even before the very sporty versions planned for the near future are available.

The layout of the rear axle combines a compound crank with a Watt’s link. This clever construction, exclusive to Opel, has demonstrated its multiple benefits in the Astra already. While it is lighter and more compact than a multi-link axle, it provides great comfort, excellent noise insulation and outstanding stability/control.

The Astra GTC chassis has been designed to perfectly integrate Opel’s intelligent, fully-adaptive FlexRidechassis control system. It enhances driving stability with better cornering behavior and steering response by automatically adapting to road conditions, cornering speed, vehicle movements and individual driving style. Better road holding and vehicle balance also enhance driving safety in emergency situations. In addition, FlexRide offers three different settings, enabling a change to the car’s character on demand by the push of a button: one can choose anytime between the balanced Standard mode, the comfort-oriented “Tour” mode or the more active “Sport” mode.

Four engines to start with – sporty versions to come soon

The Astra GTC can be ordered immediately with a choice of four powertrains – one diesel and three gasoline units.

The upgraded 2.0 CDTI common-rail turbo diesel engine with output raised to 121 kW/165 hp is fitted with a diesel particulate filter and a six-speed manual transmission. Opel’s new Start/Stop technology which reduces fuel consumption in urban stop and go traffic is standard equipment. The 2.0 CDTI combines excellent performance with high efficiency. It delivers up to 380 Nm of torque thanks to an overboost function and allows the Astra GTC to reach 100 km/h in 8.9 seconds. Top speed is 210 km/h. The combined fuel consumption does not exceed 4.9 liters of diesel per 100 km and CO2 emissions are 129 g/km. With its 56-liter fuel tank, the Astra GTC 2.0 CDTI can cover over 1,100 km.

Start/Stop is also standard with the two 1.4 turbo-compressed gasoline engines with 88 kW/120 hp and 103 kW/140 hp outputs. Both have a six-speed manual gearbox, deliver 200 Nm of torque and require 5.9 liters of fuel per 100 km (139 g/km CO2). The gasoline offer is currently topped by the 132 kW/180 hp 1.6 turbo with six-speed manual transmission, which has a top speed of 220 km/h.

More powertrains will be offered around the world premiere at the Frankfurt Motor Show. The sportiest versions including the future high-performance OPC will follow in 2012.

Innovative technologies enhance driving fun and safety

Whatever the engine, driving an Astra GTC is a rewarding experience thanks to its outstanding chassis. Fun – as well as safety – can be enhanced by a host of innovative systems.

The second-generation Opel Eye front camera system benefits from improved and extended functionalities. The Traffic Sign Recognition (TSR) can identify more signs than before and the information it provides is supplemented by input from the navigation system. In addition to the familiarLane Departure Warning (LDW), the camera now also supports a new Following Distance Indicationfunction (FDI) that visually informs the driver about the distance to the vehicle ahead.

The new, fourth-generation Bi-Xenon Advanced Forward Lighting (AFL 4) makes its debut in the Astra GTC. In addition to the nine functions from AFL+ – which include a High Beam Assist that switches the high beams on and off depending on the presence of other vehicles – it can be enhanced with anIntelligent Light Ranging system (ILR) that uses the front camera from the Opel Eye to measure the distance from the vehicle ahead and adjust the headlamp low beam pattern. This allows it to continuously optimize roadway illumination without blinding. With these ten functions, the Astra GTC features the best lighting package in the segment.

Stylish, purposeful design

Compared to its competitors, the Astra GTC does not compromise on functionality despite its coupé-like design. It does not only accommodate five persons in its cockpit, its flexible luggage compartment also provides 370 to 1,235 liters of space – over 200 liters more than the competition. The storage volume in the cockpit has been improved by 50% over the previous generation GTC, also thanks to the electric park brake that frees up space in the center console – exactly where storage is the most accessible.

The design of the Astra GTC high quality cockpit combines sculptured shapes and dynamic lines, and its distinct sporty character is enhanced by new fabrics, colors and decors on both the Enjoy and Sport executions. New premium leather trims mixing Alcantara and Nappa applications are available. The standard sport steering wheel with enhanced grips also highlights the GTC’s exciting character.

To fit all kinds of drivers, the front seats in the Astra GTC offer the widest range of adjustments in the segment. Ergonomically enhanced front seats with eight-way adjustments, four-way lumbar and upper leg extension, certified by the independent back health experts from the AGR organization (Aktion Gesunder Rücken – Action for Healthy Backs) are an accessible option with prices starting at 390 euro.

The Astra GTC has been designed and developed at Opel’s in Rüsselsheim and will be built in .

Four powertrains and two trim levels can be ordered as of June 7, 2011. Prices so far range from 21,750 euro (Astra GTC Enjoy 1.4 Turbo 88 kW/120 hp) to 27,855 euro (Astra GTC Sport 2.0 CDTI 121 kW/165 hp).

The Opel Zafira Tourer Concept made its world debut at the 2011 Geneva Motor Show. The study offers a hint at the future generation Opel Zafira MPV.

“We have transferred the idea of a relaxing lounge to a vehicle and created an automobile wellness oasis, a place to relax and enjoy. Passengers can retreat in the lounge. It is a comfortable, roomy space where you really want to be – regardless if it’s for a business trip or to relax for a long journey,” says Mark Adams, Vice President of Design at Opel. “The Opel Zafira Tourer Concept makes a statement with its sleek sporty look and premium feel”.

The Opel Zafira Tourer Concept, engineers further developed the 7-seat Flex7 seating concept pioneered by the model. The Zafira Tourer Concept is powered by an updated version of the downsized, fuel-efficient 1.4L turbo featuring Start/Stop technology.

Press Release:

World Premiere: Opel Zafira Tourer Concept, the Lounge on Wheels

Innovative, flexible seating concept creates airy and inviting atmosphere

Sculpted, energized exterior design reminiscent of a high-speed train

High-tech elements create visual accents and ensure highest levels of comfort

Geneva/Rüsselsheim. The Opel Zafira Tourer Concept makes its world premiere at the Geneva Motor Show (March 3 – 13). The vehicle offers a glimpse into the future generation Opel Zafira monocab trendsetter. The concept car combines maximum flexibility with a premium feel, resulting in an ideal blend of functionality and wellness. The Zafira Tourer Concept is a “lounge on wheels” with a light, airy and high-class quality interior that offers generous space for rear passengers. It brings Insignia values like ambition, quality and innovative technologies to the monocab segment while showcasing Opel’s design philosophysculptural artistry meets German precision.

Flexibility trendsetter Zafira as luxurious wellness oasis

True to lounge feeling, the Zafira Tourer Concept interior is bathed in light thanks to a panorama windshield that seamlessly flows into a generous glass roof which extends to the rear of the car. A special touch is a second pane of high-tech composite material that is edge-lit by LEDs. Tiny metallic particles are embedded in the plastic to reflect the light and give off a cozy, warm light that can be varied in different shades of yellow. This reinforces the homey lounge ambiance and lends the interior a glowing character while achieving a harmonious balance with the outside world.

In the Zafira Tourer Concept, Opel engineers further developed the seven-seat Flex7 seating concept pioneered by the Zafira, making it more sophisticated than ever.

The third row can still be completely folded down flush with the floor in the innovative Zafira Tourer Concept. Fully automatically at the push of a button, the five-seat configuration can then be transformed into a roomy four-seat rear cabin with first-class feeling and lounge character. Thanks to a clever new folding mechanism, the back of the middle seat in the second row folds to offer comfortable armrests for the passengers in the outer seats. These then slide back and towards each other, creating maximum space for passengers’ arms and legs and thus ensuring optimal comfort. With extended footrests, perfect seating for relaxation is created – the ideal place to unwind.

The tiltable three-piece headrests are also electrically powered and add to the spacious first-class character of the Zafira Tourer Concept’s cabin. For safety reasons the headrests remain in vertical position for the driver when the car is in motion. In the lounge setting, with the exception of the driver headrest, they swivel 90 degrees to the horizontal position while the outer elements slightly curve forward – pure wellness for the passengers.

Clarity plays a big part in comfort and well-being in the first row, where a large touch-screen display dominates the center console. A covered storage compartment above that can hold a tablet PC like an iPad. The heating can be controlled over two turn knobs below the display, and air conditioning via touch-buttons.

Thanks to the flexible and pivot-mounted tablet PCs on the front seat backs, passengers in the second row can comfortably surf the internet or control multi-media applications.

Seats tailored in high-quality caramel leather with color-matched quilted seams and stitching, contrasted with Cocoa dark brown door trim, soft deep-pile carpet and a host of premium materials pleasant to touch, underline the monocab’s exclusivity.

Exterior design: Like an elegant high-speed train

The roomy, warm interior in dark brown and caramel color tones is encased by an elegant, sculptured and sophisticated exterior design in Frost Liquid Metal, a special metallic silver-grey.

The new distinctive front with wing shaped headlamps and twin trapezoid grille intakes creates a dynamic, sporty look.

The LED technology wing-shaped daytime running lights, bi-Xenon AFL and fog lamps are all contained behind a single plexiglass cover. The fog lamps, encased in a polished aluminium frame, shimmer in blue like a frosted acrylic block and contrast the warm atmosphere of the interior. These elements visually shorten the front overhang. The characteristic Opel center crease on the hood reaches from the grille to the windshield.

Like the Astra Sports Tourer, the Zafira’s belt line sweeps upwards in a hockey stick-like gesture and visually helps to propel the vehicle forward. The silhouette is reminiscent of a high-speed train. The sleek, aerodynamic body noticeably reduces wind noise to ensure quiet cruising even at high speeds.

The aerodynamically optimized exterior mirrors house the turn indicators that are encased like jewels in an elegant, polished aluminium body. These high-class trim details are echoed in the waist molding of the side glass as well as on the roof rails.

The dark tail lamps in the signature blade form with LED technology wrap around the body side and tailgate. The horizontal aluminium bar carrying the Opel logo stretches far into the light elements, giving the Opel Zafira Tourer Concept a broad, sporty look in the rear. The parallelogram-shaped dual exhaust pipes are integrated in another aluminium bar in the lower fascia, adding to its dynamic appearance.

Innovative designs and technologies enhance looks and comfort

The 20-inch twin-spoke alloy wheels in dark metallic grey matte lacquer emphasize both the monocab’s natural athleticism and its upper-class character. The polished high-gloss spokes contrast with diamond-cut aluminium surfaces that make them stand out against the dark background of the rims.

There is also a smart, exclusive detail hidden behind five slim covers integrated in the spokes. Opel engineers designed them as decorative and functional wheel-nut protectors. They can be unlocked easily and quickly and the covers open out in star-form to allow access to the bolts. The 245/40 R20 tires add an extra dash of sporty comfort.

The Zafira Tourer Concept is powered by a new version of the downsized, fuel-efficient 1.4 Turbo featuring Start/Stop technology that provides a smooth ride for all occupants.

The Zafira Tourer Concept also features innovative technologies that enhance comfort and safety such as the FlexRide fully adaptive damping system.

Opel and Vauxhall confirmed that they will build a convertible based on the Astra compact car at the factory in Gliwice, Poland. The move is a part of the brand’s planned 11 billion Euro investments to renew its lineup over the next five years.

CEO of Opel/Vauxhall Nick Reilly said that convertible will end up giving the brands a more halo effect.

“The new Convertible will be based on Opel/Vauxhall’s compact vehicle architecture which is also the basis for the current Astra, the Astra SportsTourer and the upcoming Astra GTC,” Opel said in a statement. “It will hit the market in 2013 – the same year that Opel/Vauxhall will also launch its chic and stylish small car meeting the growing demand for vehicles in line with a young and urban lifestyle.”

Opel said that the name, pricing and equipment for the convertible will be announced at a later date.

“The new Convertible will be a great addition to our product lineup,” said Opel/Vauxhall CEO Nick Reilly. “It follows the long-standing tradition of highly emotional and legendary Opel/Vauxhall Cabrios that provided important halo effects on our brand. With its sleek and elegant design, our new Convertible will fully deliver on that same promise.”

The model will compete with the likes of the Volkswagen Gold Cabriolet, which will debut at the 2011 Geneva Motor Show.

Every time someone asks us what is the best performance sedan we’ve ever drive – the General Motors’ Cadillac CTS-V Sedan comes to mind. Well, on the other side of the Atlantic Ocean, GM offers the British another performance four-door – the Vauxhall VXR8 Sedan and it has just been updated for the 2011 model year.

Based on the HSV E3 GTS model, the 2011 Vauxhall VXR8 is powered by a 6.2L LS3 V8 engine making 425-hp and a maximum torque of 405 lb-ft of torque. Mated to a 6-speed manual or 6-speed automatic transmission, the 2011 VXR8 goes from 0-60 mph in 4.9 seconds with a top speed of 155 mph.

While eve the previous model of the VXR8 had a used MacPherson struts/progressive rate coil springs at the front and a multi-link independent set-up at the rear, for the first time, the model gets GM’s Magnetic Ride Control (MRC) suspension system, which adapts up to 1000 times a seconds to road conditions and driver inputs. It also gets Launch Control, which is engaged when drivers select the ESC’s (Electronic Stability Control) Competition Mode.

Prices for the 2011 Vauxhall VXR8 start at £49,500 ($77,307 USD).

Press Release:

REAR-DRIVE, 6.2-LITRE V8, SUB-£50K: IT HAS TO BE THE NEW VXR8!

New VXR8 hits UK dealers next March, based on higher-spec GTS model

Re-designed exterior and new interior with full leather trim as standard

Magnetic Ride Control & Launch Control complement 431PS V8 powertrain

Luton – Vauxhall’s storming VXR8 model is back with a vengeance, packing heavily revised front- and rear-end styling, a new cabin and a raft of new technology to enhance its appeal to drivers in search of one of the last, great rear-drive V8 super-saloons.

Priced at £49,500 (inc. 20 per cent VAT) and available to order later this month, the new VXR8 is now based on HSV’s E3 GTS model, just launched in Australia, the previous VXR8 representing the old version of the lower-spec ClubSport R8. That means it still undercuts full-size super saloons like the Audi RS6, Jaguar XFR and Mercedes E63 AMG by between £13k and £29k, and even performance saloons from the class below, such as the BMW M3 and Mercedes C63 AMG.

A new, ‘Shockwave’ grille, LED daytime running lights and sleek new wing-vents mark the new car out from the front, while the rear features a new ‘Superflow’ rear spoiler, LED tail lamps and twin exhaust tips that mimic the shape of the front grille. As you can see from these first official press shots of our Hazard Yellow car, the new VXR8 will never blend into the scenery!

As before, the new VXR8′s race-bred chassis uses MacPherson struts/progressive rate coil springs at the front and a multi-link independent set-up at the rear. But for the first time on a VXR8, Vauxhall has employed Magnetic Ride Control (MRC), a suspension system which adapts up to 1000 times a seconds to road conditions and driver inputs. Based on technology used in GM’s current Corvette ZR1 supercar, MRC works by sending an electric current through damper units filled with ‘soft’ magnetic particles. These particles harden as the input reaches its maximum value, providing drivers with exceptional levels of ride, handling and stopping power.

Complementing the new VXR8′s MRC is Launch Control, which is engaged when drivers select the ESC’s (Electronic Stability Control) Competition Mode. The system dictates the level of torque delivered to the rear wheels for maximum acceleration, according to surface conditions. All the driver has to do is floor the throttle and let the car do the rest. Extensive testing has proved that LC results in acceleration runs no more than 0.1 second apart.

Of course, no VXR8 would be complete without a large-capacity V8, and this latest version doesn’t disappoint. The fourth generation 6.2-litre LS3 unit produces 431PS and a massive 550Nm of torque, enough to propel the VXR8 from 0-60mph in 4.9 seconds and on to a governed top speed of 155mph. As before, drive is delivered to the rear axle via either a six-speed manual or auto transmission, working through a mechanical limited slip differential.

Inside, the new VXR8 has undergone a transformation. Full leather trim is now standard, and front occupants are cocooned in special HSV Performance Seats with eight-way adjustability. A new instrument cluster and surround, centre stack and switchgear provide a cleaner and more integrated look, while standard equipment also includes Aux-in/USB inputs, iPod support and Bluetooth with phone book display and touch-screen dialling.

But for drivers who want to engage with their VXR8 like never before, Vauxhall has introduced EDI, or Enhanced Driver Interface. EDI connects with the on-board computer to constantly stream real-time vehicle dynamics and performance to the car’s main 5-inch monitor. At the touch of the screen, drivers can access a variety of data such as vehicle G-forces, power and torque and lap times – even the degree to which their VXR8 is drifting. Completing the clever package is the ability for drivers to download data, such as track day performance, and analyse it using the MOTEC i2 software provided.

Befitting its exclusivity, the VXR8 is now available through just six highly specialist VXR dealers in the UK, though a total of 34 VXR outlets will be authorised to maintain the model.

According to AutoExpress, Vauxhall/Opel are planning a competitor and have plans to resurrect the Calibra.

“I believe we should have one, so we will have one,” GM Europe chief Nick Reilly told the UK-based publication.

Reilly said that Vauxhall/Opel may use the Gran Turismo Concept (GTC) as a basis for the coupe. “It will be exactly this type of car,” he said.

The GT Concept was powered by a 2.8L V6 turbo engine making 320-hp. However, the production version may use a smaller turbocharged engine, using the company’s forthcoming range of all-new, direct-injection gasoline units that, which will give economy savings of “at least 10 to 15 per cent.”

Will we see a Buick version? Only time will tell.

Following a short preview from Vauxhall earlier this month, Opel today released some more details and images of the two brand’s new GTC Paris concept. As stated before, the Paris GTC concept gives the “strongest hint yet to the Astra Sport Hatch”s successor.”

Power for the Opel/Vauxhall GTC Paris concept comes from a 2.0L twin-scroll turbocharged 4-cylinder engine making 290-hp mated to a 6-speed manual transmission. Opel says that “double camshaft phasing and twin balance shafts provide the basis of the engine”s impressive performance data,” which have yet to be released. The limited slip differential helps control traction without limiting the torque.

The GTC Paris concept also gets the FlexRide adaptive suspension system, which continuously adapts to changes in driving style and cornering speed, allowing for a more rewarding driving experience.

Press Release:

Sculptural Artistry: Dramatic proportions and dynamic sweeping lines

German Engineering: 213 kW/290 hp 2.0 Turbo DI; FlexRide adaptive suspension

Affordable: The achievable dream car

Momentum: Concept showcases energized brand

Paris/Rüsselsheim. The GTC Paris concept car embodies the passionate side of Opel: Its role is to show how Opel can “dial up” the brand”s now established design direction by creating a very sporty and emotional interpretation.

The GTC Paris is designed to be artistically sculpted using sweeping dynamic lines. At the same time, it is engineered with German precision and energized with technical innovation, like a 2.0 liter Turbo gasoline engine with direct injection, a new execution of the fully adaptive FlexRide suspension and an limited slip differential in the front.

This three-door sporty hatch is pure but sporty, simple but expressive and at the same time bold and iconic. Keeping in line with Opel”s DNA, it is an achievable dream car, conceived to showcase an energized brand. This energy is also conveyed by the vibrant and expressive Liquid Metal Red exterior color.

Coming close on the heels of the new generation Astra Sports Tourer which will also debut at the Paris motor show, the GTC Paris is how Opel envisions the next logical step of a newly shaped line-up.

Exterior design: Muscular lines like tendons on a sprinter

At 4.46 meters, the GTC Paris is the ideal size for a compact, sporty car, which still offers room for five. In profile, the designers have maximized drama by limiting the amount of lines in the GTC Paris. Three strong lines create tension and provide a sculpted shape. The Opel signature blade is introduced in the same direction as first seen in the Insignia — a fine, crisp line that sweeps upward from the rocker at the beginning of the front door. A second line encapsulates the door handle and sweeps to the rear, emphasizing the vehicle”s dramatic stance by spreading the surfaces to a fine undercut and a broad shoulder. The third line following the silhouette of the roof is finished in finely brushed aluminum accentuating the window graphic, which guides the eye to the sharply accented integrated spoiler.

The shoulder section is the most dramatic area of the Opel GTC Paris. The broadest point pulls down to a wide athletic “bulldog stance,” giving the car a very purposeful road presence. The line from the C-pillar slides into the tail and curls around into the rear spoiler, which is ingeniously integrated into the continuing roof line.

The clean frontal styling features Opel”s typical centerline crease. It is further accented by intense, very slim eagle-eye shaped headlamps acting as parenthesis between the refined chrome emblem bar and the dramatic low trapezoidal grill which hints at its sporty character. Opel typical wing-shaped signature LED daytime running lights get a new twist with finely sculptured chrome jewels that are seen easily behind clear glass. The trapezoidal grille is recognizably Opel, but separate from the chrome bar and placed lower, for a race track feel.

The wide stance is accentuated in the rear, where the proportion of the vehicle is most imposing due to the powerful shoulder design. This is further enhanced with the LED taillights and one long stretched “wing” motif, which make the new Opel vehicles distinguishable at night.

The aerodynamics of the dynamic 21-inch wheels is optimized with carbon-fiber inserts which enclose the center caps.

Purposeful driver”s cockpit

Echoing the flowing, sculpted forms of the bodywork, the hallmarks of the GTC Paris interior are sweeping lines and shapes as well as the bold use of fabric. The interior is driver-focused, with a positive/negative use of color: Whereas the driver”s seat is red with black trim, all other components in the interior are outfitted in a charcoal black with red stitching. The car”s inspiration, a quote from Richard Bach”s novel,Jonathon Livingstone Seagull is laser-etched in calligraphy script into the seat “¦ “and the speed was pure beauty.”

Sporty, bucket front seats have been specially designed for the GTC Paris. Their aggressively shaped contours and graphics perfectly compliment the overall dynamic spirit of the car are outlined in titanium and filled in with black netting, repeating a design cue seen on the carbon fiber inserts on the wheels.

The small black leather racing steering wheel features metal inserts. On the dashboard, the interior continues Opel”s recurring “wing” and “blade” motifs. In this execution, the blade theme is expressed in details like the shape of the polished chrome door grab handles and the trim for gearshift molding. The wing design cue is immediately evident in the warm, inviting wraparound instrument panel that embraces front seat occupants. It arcs across the cabin into the top of the door moldings.

The Opel design team used leather and micro-fibers for the seats, plush carpeting on the flooring, and a textured black instrument panel. These classic materials have a contemporary twist, not only in the choice of hues but also in the positive/negative stitching.

German Engineering Packs Powerful Punch with 213 kW/290 hp 2.0 liter Turbo

In line with Opel”s strategy to turbo-charge for efficient performance, the GTC Paris is powered by a small displacement, twin-scroll turbo-charged four-cylinder with direct injection – a range-topping 2.0-liter Turbo equipped with a six-speed manual transmission. . This punchy engine packs 213 kW/290 hp. Double camshaft phasing and twin balance shafts provide the basis of the engine”s impressive performance data. In addition, an Limited Slip Differential helps control traction without limiting the torque of this state-of-the-art turbo engine.

Yet with all this performance, environmental responsibility is not forgotten: Start/Stop technology keeps emissions and noise down in the urban traffic. This keeps the GTC Paris frugal without diminishing its sporty character.

Innovative technology enhances performance

The best of Opel”s compact car technology is brought to its sportiest level on this concept car. The chassis has a special design with an extra-wide stance for best possible performance and handling. In addition to the front limited slip differential, it has a compound crank with an Opel-exclusive Watt”s Link in the rear, and a new execution of the adaptive mechatronic FlexRide suspension..

The compound crank rear axle enhanced with the cleverly positioned Watt”s link enables the crisp handling and high comfort that is being celebrated on the current Astra. Keeping the advantages of size, weight and overall efficiency of the compound crank rear axle layout over a classical multi-link design, the architecture with its additional Watt”s link better supports lateral forces on the suspension while cornering. It also makes the car dynamic and agile without compromising on stability and comfort.

The GTC Paris also features the FlexRide adaptive suspension system, which continuously adapts to changes in driving style and cornering speed. Apart from a more rewarding driving experience, FlexRide also offers safety benefits in emergency situations as it enhances the vehicle stability in all circumstances.

Together features like these allow the sporty compact GTC Paris concept to make best use of the power and energy conveyed by its design.
