The Bentley Continental GT changed the landscape of modern ultra-luxury cars — and not just with its swoopy good looks.
The Bentley arrived as a 2004 model for $155,000: six figures and then some, yet barely half the price of traditional British royals from Bentley or former partner turned rival Rolls-Royce. By borrowing the aluminum chassis, all-wheel-drive system, and engine components from Audi/Volkswagen (which took control of Bentley in 1998), the automaker held costs in check without sacrificing style, luxury, or performance. In fact, the Bentley Continental GT was the fastest and most powerful Bentley in history, and more technically advanced than the far pricier and more conservative Arnage.
The Mercedes-Benz ML63 AMG provides blistering straight-line speed and a comfortable interior but is hampered by a rough ride and appallingly low fuel economy.

The Rolls-Royce Phantom Drophead Coupe debuted as a 2008 model and is essentially a restyled two-door, four-seat, open-air version of Phantom sedan. It is the second new model to come from the legendary British brand since BMW took full control of Rolls-Royce in 2003. A fixed-roof coupe is expected to round out the model line later in 2008.
Sometimes when we write here, at eGMCarTech, we try to keep a ‘Clarkson’ tone in our mind. But as much as we try we can never be as blunt and brutally outspoken about the cars we write about. We’ll just leave it up to Mr. Clarkson himself. In his recent review of the MINI Clubman, Clarkson does not hesitate to say that “Unfortunately, after a week, I have decided it’s one of the worst cars in the world. About as desirable as a packet of dung or a can of worms. Truthfully? I’d rather have a goat.” Could it really be that bad?
We had the chance to catch the Clubman at the LA Auto Show, and were pretty impressed by the design and functionality BMW built into it. However, Clarkson does point out some very good points.

BMW has long reigned atop the upper echelon of the compact sports coupe market with its high-performance M3. The two-door Audi S5 challenges the M3’s authority with a powerful V8 engine and other assorted upgrades over the A5 model upon which it’s based. That A5 is, in turn, derived from the next generation of the A4 sedan.

The Infiniti EX35 debuts for the 2008 model year in an expanding universe of compact luxury crossover SUVs. It is a smaller, sportier sibling to the automaker’s FX35.
The Infiniti EX35’s styling is sleeker than the FX’s muscular bodywork, with short front and rear overhangs and a sweeping coupe-like roofline. Still, there is a family resemblance between the two models, particularly in their front-end treatments.
The Audi S6’s huge engine, well-appointed interior and understated appearance make for an ideal high-speed cruiser.

While test driving the Audi S6, I stopped at my parents’ house for a short visit. This was not a good idea.
First of all, they thought I had gotten a job at a hedge fund and not told them. Then, after dinner, I took my dad for a ride and now he wants one, which is more of a problem for my mom than it is for me. We merely meandered through the neighborhood, but two minutes into the drive, he said, “This car is serious. This is a car for a guy like me.”

The thought of a six-figure hybrid, a word that typically elicits thoughts of economical Priuses, might seem oxymoronic. But among those who buy a Prius are people who could afford any car but have chosen technology and eco-friendliness over brute force and ostentation. The Lexus LS 600h L plays to this set.
Whether a 438-horsepower sedan that has a 21 mile-per-gallon combined city/highway fuel-consumption rating is a true green machine is debatable. Lexus has decided that the supersedan market doesn’t need yet another V12, but that it might respond to a machine of such super-tech and seeming concern for the environment that it would be unique in the segment.
With the E320 Bluetec, Mercedes-Benz delivers the most fuel efficient luxury car on the American market.

For Mercedes-Benz owners interested in not settling for less (i.e., all of them), there’s the E320 Bluetec, an E-Class sedan that looks and drives like the standard V6 model while delivering well over 30 mpg, enough to save the typical owner about $500 a year in fuel costs. The car can travel more than 700 highway miles on a single tank. In a way, since it delivers better fuel economy and range, E320 Bluetec owners actually settle for more.
The Mercedes-Benz CLK63 AMG from Germany subscribes to the all-American philosophy that an engine can never be too big.

As many drivers adjust budgets to contend with fluctuating gas prices, another battle rages for the benefit of those who couldn’t care less: The war to boost horsepower to record heights.
The latest escalation comes from Mercedes-Benz and its exclusive AMG division, known for the ferocity of its supercharged, super-priced models.

Bad news first: If you live in California, Maine, Massachusetts, New York or Vermont, you can’t buy the Mercedes-Benz ML320 CDI, or for that matter, any diesel passenger car (as of 2007). Those states have set their own, stricter emissions rules, so even Mercedes’ current diesels, the world’s cleanest, don’t pass muster.
