Renault/Nissan CEO, Carlos Ghosn, said that General Motors Company would have been better off if it had formed an alliance with his companies in 2006. GM and Renault/Nissan called the talks off in October 2006.

“Without any doubt,” he said during a forum sponsored by the Council on Foreign Relations. “We knew fundamentally that this would work, but only if it was a collaborative effort.”

Ghosn said that there was huge “possibility to create something that would be extremely competitive.” He said the alliance would have allowed both companies to share technology, practices and a common approach.

When asked if he was happy that the alliance with GM fell through, Ghosn said: “When you see the disaster and the waste of energy and skills and talent, nobody can be happy.”

He went on to say that the auto industry had become much more interconnected.

“When General Motors was in danger, everybody was scared. We were scared. Because some of our suppliers are big suppliers of General Motors,” Ghosn said. “If they go down, we would not have been able to assemble any single car in the United States.”

A new study called Electrification Roadmap predicts that there will be at least 14 million electric-vehicles on U.S. roads by 2020 and that EVs could account for 75 percent of all light-duty miles driven by 2040. The new study is backed by Nissan, FedEx, Coda Automotive and Coulomb Technologies.

“Up to now, electrification seemed like a pipe dream,” said Fred Smith, chairman and CEO of FedEx and a member of the Electrification Coalition. “But we are offering a realistic, practical, achievable plan to build a transportation system that will enhance our national security, propel economic growth and reduce carbon dioxide emissions.”

The results from Electrification Roadmap are expected to capture the attention of the government, automakers and many companies that participate in developing electric cars.

The Nissan LEAF and the Chevrolet Volt are both scheduled to release in 2010. Nissan CEO Carlos Ghosn recently predicted that electric-vehicle sales will reach around 1 million in the U.S. by 2015.

As some of you may remember, at the Dodgers Stadium here in Los Angeles last April I test drove a Nissan Cube fitted with what was to eventually be the powertrain of the new 2011 Nissan Leaf. What seemed to be an exercise in futurism, now looking back, was more close to reality that we, in the media, could have expected.

Flash forward to now. Back to the Dodger Stadium, and actually back to the same exact parking lot in the Dodger Stadium, things have changed. I was once again behind the wheel of a Leaf mock-up, but this time, it was 100% accurate to production in terms of powertrain chassis, just fitted with a Versa-based body. Much like the last time, the VersaLeaf (Yes, I just made that up) had a smooth rush of torque off the line, and nice acceleration up to the around-town types of speeds I was able to achieve through the autocross inspired closed course. The expectedly linear rush, of course, was accompanied by only the lear-jet-taxi’ing electric motor hum emanating from the powertrian. The big surprise this time was the nice handling. The steering was nicely weighted and the suspensioned reacted quite well to dynamic transitions. One key factor is that the formidably heavy batteries are packaged under the floorpan and thus, the car’s center of gravity was quite low. A 0-60 time of ‘under 10s’ was thrown around, and I believe it’s probably a conservative number. People looking to drive this car in day-to-day activities will not have any problems with the performance of this car. I also wouldn’t be surprised to see some Leafs pop up in SCCA autocross once the car hits the mainstream.

First Drive: Nissan Leaf EV… sort of:

Back to the event itself: no longer is this a small casual event, it is a full-blown media event. No surprise, as Nissan President & CEO Carlos Ghosn was there himself to talk about the Leaf. Along with him was a panel panel including moderator Tyler Suiters, Chief Correspondent for Clean Skies News, David Crane, President & CEO of NRG Energy, Patricia Monahan, Deputy Director, Clean Vehicles Program, Director of the California Office, Union of Concerned Scientists and Mary Nichols, Chairman of California Air Resources Board. There was a lot of frank discussion back and forth, but let’s start with what you’re likely to be interested in: automotive product.

While we didn’t get to drive the actual production LEAF we did get a chance to take a spin in a Nissan Versa that carries the same powertrain. Power comes from a 107-hp electric-motor that runs on power supplied by lithium ion cells. On a full-charge, the Nissan LEAF allows for a driving range of 100 miles with a top speed of 87 mph. A full charge takes up to 8 hours on a standard 200V outlet. Buyers can opt for the DC 50kW quick-charger, which recharges the battery up to 80 percent in under 30 minutes. One tasty tidbit of information that Carlos threw out there was an upcoming Infiniti 4-passenger compact luxury car that would also utilize the same or similar powertrain along with a light commercial vehicle (we imagine badged as a Renault) and two other yet unnamed vehicles. The Leaf will be built in Nissan’s Smyrna, Tennessee plant along with its batteries. The interesting thing about how the vehicle will be sold is that the car will be available for purchase, but the batteries will be leased to the consumer. This does 2 things: 1) makes price of the Leaf more competitive with gas-engined equivalent cars and 2) structures the variable cost portion (battery lease + electricity) to be competitive with fuel costs at a projected 12,000-15,000 miles a year. As gas will only be getting more expensive, while battery technology would make batteries cheaper, this disparity will only increase. Carlos added that this leasing scheme would also future-proof the consumer from new battery technologies as they can simply trade-up to new batteries rather than being stuck with outdated technology. When asked about third party battery providers, Carlos mentioned that since Nissan would be producing its own batteries, it would not have to work to convince a 3rd provider that there is a market for the batteries in order to get them to commit to building capacity. This speeds up the process, however Nissan is open to 3rd party providers as long as those batteries meet the requirements needed.

The key to making the vehicle successful, according to Carlos, is being able to build the car in mass-scale. Per unit, he said, electric cars are not by nature more expensive and actually have much less components and thus less complication. However, they are dwarfed by the scale of internal combustion cars and thus cannot, at the current sales levels, compete on price. Economies of scale are paramount and thus the impetus for getting some initial critical mass for the Leaf. He envisions volumes of 500,000 cars a year worldwide once all markets are on-line. He quoted a volume level of over 10% of worldwide sales moving forward. Being that Nissan-Renault sold around 6 million some odd vehicles last year, this doesn’t seem too unreasonable and actually might be conservative.

Infrastructure is also a key need that needs to be satisfied, though David Crane was quick to point out that this should not be a chicken/egg issue where one is waiting on the other. The infrastructure and cars able to utilize that infrastructure must build together, not sequentially. To that, Patricia Monahan added that government can help build this critical mass through its use of tax incentives, etc.

From an environmental standpoint, an acceleration in volume of non-oil powered cars would be required to hit required greenhouse gas reduction targets. Especially as tailpipe emissions are still 25% worse than even coal produced electricity. What’s different now than the so-called ‘false start’ we had in the early 90’s (they didn’t mention them by name, but they were of course referring to the EV1, RAV4 EV, etc.), is that the private sector (including automakers themselves) is on-board, not just being ‘forced’ into it by regulation. Furthermore, and probably more importantly, there is now public support for electric cars. It is now, as they said, just forward thinkers such as academics, scientists, etc. as was the case a decade or two ago.

We’ve been hearing about the Nissan GT-R SpecM for some time now. The car was rumored to debut at the 2009 Tokyo Motor Show last month but instead we saw an upgraded 2011 Nissan GT-R with some minor enhancements. Nonetheless, Nissan says that the SpecM is still in the works.

The man behind the R34 M-Spec, Kazutoshi Mizuno, told Inside Line that Nissan always planned on doing a GT-R SpecM after it released the SpecV. Like the first SpecM, the new one will also have a smoother ride, which will make the supercar more comfortable on everyday roads. Basically, it will focus on being a road car first and a track car second.

Prices of the Nissan GT-R SpecM are expected to be more than the hardcore GT-R SpecV. The release is reported to be scheduled for early next year.

Renault and Nissan’s CEO Carlos Ghosn is still betting big on the ultra low-cost car segment and reaffirmed that the group will have a Tata Nano competitor, in a partnership with Bajaj Auto, by 2011. Speaking at the India Economic Summit, Ghosn said that the compact car is still a goal not only in India, but even globally and the three partners were working to get one on the road by two years.

“The entry price point, which will be $2,500 is still very important for the market, not only for India, but also for lot of emerging markets,” Ghosn said. “We have to bring in the car with basic feature, basic functionality at a very affordable price.”

In earlier press release, Nissan said that “initial planned capacity will be 400,000 units per year. Sales will start in early 2011 in India, as a primary market, with growth potential in other emerging markets around the world.

“I know that some of our competitors like Tata has already put the car in the market … its moving on. We will continue to work to bring in this car (with Bajaj) into the market,” Ghosn said.

The Nissan Leaf has made it on to TIME Magazine’s list of 50 Best Innovations of 2009. TIME said:

It’s not the world’s first electric car, but the Nissan Leaf, launched in August, is the first fully electric vehicle built for mass production for the global market. To help drivers shift their thinking from gas to green, Japan’s third largest automaker has about 30 partnerships worldwide focused on developing an infrastructure of battery-recharging stations to keep electric vehicles on the roads.

We’ll be posting our first drive feature on the Leaf later today – stay tuned.

Refresher: Power comes from a 107-hp electric-motor that runs on power supplied by lithium ion cells.

In August of this year, Nissan and Chrysler both released statements saying that they have mutually decided to end their plans to produce three vehicles for one another. Besides working on a new compact sedan and a small vehicle, Nissan and Chrysler ended a collaboration in which Chrysler provided Nissan with the full-sized Titan based on the Dodge Ram.

Speaking to Inside Line at the launch of the Nissan Leaf tour on Friday, CEO Carlos Ghosn said that the Titan will indeed survive.

“Titan will have a replacement, we are staying in the large pickup truck market,” Ghosn said.

He said that the next-generation model may be built and designed by Nissan or with another partner.

Press Release:

UPDATED GT-R FOR EUROPE

In line with its philosophy of constant improvement to its high performance icon, Nissan has introduced a series of minor but key updates to the GT-R to maintain its position as the definitive accessible supercar.

Under the skin, by changing the front spring and damper rates, the ride comfort is improved, while handling becomes even more dynamic thanks to improved responsiveness and more accurate control of suspension movements.

At the rear, the stiffness of the suspension radius rod bushings has been increased, giving improved feel and responsiveness during cornering.

The logic controlling torque distribution between the front and rear axles when the GT-R is manoeuvring at low speeds just after start-up, when fluids are cold, has been altered to reduce rear-axle ‘binding’. Furthermore, the logic in the gearbox has been changed to give a later downshift from 6th to 5th when being driven in automatic mode, but a more aggressive downshift pattern is adopted when changing down from 4th to 3rd, and from 3rd to 2nd gear.

To improve cooling around the rear of the car, two additional NACA cooling ducts have been added to the carbon fibre underfloor diffuser which will provide additional cooling to the exhaust and gearbox. Furthermore, a new, larger diameter pipe connecting the oil cooler will reduce gearbox temperatures.

Another small, but significant update has been to the front transmission mount, which has been stiffened, reducing vibration through the driveline under high-load conditions.

The balance of the electonic brakeforce distribution bias has been moved slightly rearwards, giving greater braking stability in dry conditions, while a change in design of the rear brake cross spring has reduced noise and a modified air deflector increases rear brake cooling.

Changes to the emissions system now ensure GT-R is Euro 5 compliant, without loss of output or performance, with CO2 emissions having dropped by 3g to 295g/km.

Visually, front and rear bumpers now benefit from a double coat of clear paint, giving a deeper colour finish, while inside the speedometer and rev counter now sport gun metallic finish surrounds.

Finally, uprated insulation has been fitted to the rear seats, further improving cabin refinement.

Upgraded Navigation & Audio

Since September deliveries, the GT-R has been equipped with Nissan’s next generation combined audio and navigation system, offering improved ease-of-operation, new and updated features. Indeed, the GT-R is the first Nissan model to be equipped with the new system.

At its heart is a Hard Disk Drive (HDD) navigation system with 40GB of memory space. This makes for faster operation and greater data storage capacity.

Among the many benefits are vastly extended mapping which now includes Turkey, Eastern Europe and Russia, as well as a new easy to follow 3D navigation guidance with improved graphics and a more realistic depiction of the road and landmarks ahead.

The resolution of the new 7 inch screen is up to four times better than the previous generation system.

Real time traffic information is supplied via RDS-TMC, but quicker operation allows the system to offer re-routing in a fraction of the time.

Users have access to Point Of Interest (POI) information supplied by Michelin, with comprehensive information on restaurants, services, museums and other tourist attractions in 20 major European cities.

And, like the GT-R’s existing display, the new generation system continues to use a touch-screen interface, maximising both ease of use and safety not only for the navigation, but also for other functions such as Bluetooth phone connectivity and entertainment. It is also possible to operate the system using voice recognition.

On-screen instructions can be displayed in eight different languages – English, French, German, Spanish, Italian, Portuguese, Dutch and Russian – while voice recognition is supported in seven – English, French, German, Spanish, Italian, Portuguese and Dutch.

Another benefit of the HDD information and entertainment system is the incorporation of a 9.3GB Music Box library which can store music from up to 300 CDs. The download takes place automatically when a CD is inserted into the CD player, if selected.

But for those who want a wider music selection at their fingertips, the system also allows iPod/USB connection with full control via the screen and/or steering wheel switches. In addition, song, artist and album information is displayed on the screen.

Other audio devices can be played via the unit’s Bluetooth Audio Streaming function.

Press Release:

Nissan Adds New Rogue Krom™ Edition, Featuring Sporty Styling, Exclusive 17-Inch Wheels, Sport-Tuned Exhaust

Nissan North America, Inc. (NNA) today announced the latest addition to its Krom™ specialty vehicles lineup, the 2010 Nissan Rogue Krom™ edition, which is scheduled to go on sale at Nissan dealers nationwide in December 2009. The new Rogue Krom™ edition is designed to offer a unique dimension to traditional compact sport utility vehicles with its aggressive sport styling, exclusive 17-inch wheels and a center-exit sport-tuned exhaust. Nissan also offers a Krom™ edition of the popular Nissan cube®.

The limited production Rogue Krom™ edition is available in both front-wheel and all-wheel drive configurations and in just three exterior colors – Venom Red, Wicked Black and Gotham Gray.

Built on the solid foundation of the Rogue S, the Krom™ edition adds 17-inch brilliant finish aluminum-alloy wheels with P225/60R Continental Conti 4×4 Contact tires and a unique grille embedded in the aggressive front fascia with integrated fog lights. In the rear, the Rogue Krom™ edition includes a boldly styled sport fascia with integrated center-exit exhaust, a body-colored rear spoiler and rear privacy glass. Body-colored power outside mirrors, a Krom™ emblem and steering wheel-mounted audio controls complete the Krom™ equipment modifications.

“The new Krom™ edition expands Rogue’s already strong appeal, bringing its unmistakable sporty and active design to buyers seeking to stand out from the crowd of ordinary compact SUVs,” said Pat Steiner, director, Specialty Vehicles Group, NNA. “Just as our NISMO models add enhanced performance straight from the factory, the Krom™ lineup offers intriguing, customized design right off the showroom floor.”

Based at NNA headquarters in Franklin, Tenn., the Specialty Vehicles Group was formed in August 2006 to develop niche derivatives of Nissan vehicles.

“Krom™ adds a level of style and appearance, along with a sense of intrigue, excitement and self-expression. The Krom™ name suggests ‘cars with attitude,’ rather than a literal interpretation of chrome wheels or trim,” added Steiner. “We leverage our speed and flexibility in bringing exciting new products to market – faster and for less than ‘mainstream’ models.”

About the 2010 Nissan Rogue
The 2010 Nissan Rogue crossover SUV continues to satisfy both the functional needs of the buyers and their emotional needs – including the versatility provided by a large 58 cubic feet of cargo space. Rogue SL and Rogue Krom™ include 17-inch aluminum-alloy wheels. Chrome door handles are now standard on all Rogue models.

Nissan’s CEO Carlos Ghosn told Automotive News today that he has ruled out a stand-alone hybrid like the Toyota Prius.

“We don’t have this in our plans,” Ghosn said. “We are not intending to play a leadership role in hybrids. “One company already assumed leadership in the technology. We want leadership on EVs.”

Ghosn said that Nissan will offer hybrid variants of existing models in its lineup.
