Joining the Ford lineup at next month’s 2009 SEMA show, will be the brand’s luxury siblings as Lincoln will be presenting their new luxury project vehicles; the MKS, MKT, and MKZ.

The vehicles will be on display in the Ford booth from Nov. 3-6 at the Las Vegas Convention Center.

“Lincoln as a brand is continuing to attract younger customers to the showroom with products like the MKS, MKZ and the new MKT luxury crossover,” said Amy Marentic, Ford North American Car and Crossovers group marketing manager. “These customers place huge importance on style, design and technology, and these are areas where Lincoln plays well,” said Marentic. “SEMA gives customizers the opportunity to push the boundaries of design, while still focusing on the core strengths of the Lincoln brand.”

Parting with our 2010 Ford Taurus SHO was certainly sorrowful, but thankfully we were immediately distracted with a 2010 Lincoln MKS EcoBoost with the same SHO engine, though the MKS EcoBoost engine puts 10-hp less when compared to the 365-hp put out by the SHO.

The MKS EcoBoost shows no traits of a hot-rod vehicle; there is no rumble when one steps on the accelerator, the tires don’t scream, and the front-end stays down on full-throttle. Despite all of that though, the overall MKS EcoBoost experience is like that of a performance sedan, with some manners. If that doesn’t surprise you, consider the fuel-economy; an EPA estimated 17/25 mpg, better than its standard V6 sibling.

Exterior:

At a whopping 61.6″ tall, 75.9″ wide, 204.1″ long, and sitting on its 112.9″ wheelbase, the MKS, like the Taurus SHO, is an aesthetic beast. The EcoBoost offers its own appearance package which includes a distinctive grille, front-lip spoiler, side rockers and door claddings, a deck-lid spoiler with chrome insert and a modified red ‘S’ badge. The appearance package also upgrades the standard 19-inch aluminum wheels to 20-inch chrome wheels. Without the appearance package, the MKS EcoBoost is liable to come off as a sleeper performance vehicle; much like the SHO. The MKS EcoBoost’s key competition includes the likes of the Cadillac STS, Hyundai Genesis, Audi A6, and the Lexus GS. Though it is a draw between the MKS EcoBoost, the GS, and the A6 as far as appearance goes, the MKS EcoBoost is certainly a better looking vehicle than the STS and the Genesis.

Interior:

Not to keep comparing the MKS EcoBoost to the SHO, despite the MKS’s luxurious and elegant interior, the SHO has a much more attractive interior. Standard on the MKS EcoBoost are:

Microsoft Sync

Intelligent Access with Push Button Start

Rear-Window Power Sunshade.

Heated and Cooled 12-way Power Adjustable Driver and Passenger Seats

Heated Rear Seats

For $3,500, one can opt for the Rapid Spec 201A, which includes:

Voice-activated DVD Navigation System with Integrated SIRIUS Travel Link

THX II with 5.1 Surround Audio System, In-Dash Single DVD/CD/MP3 player that includes both DVD audio and video capabilities.

Internal Hard Disk Drive for Map, Points-of-Interest Storage, and 10GB Music Jukebox with photo capabilities

Rear-view Camera

Six-Month paid subscription to SIRIUS Radio with Real-Time Traffic Monitoring in Select Markets

The Ultimate Package includes:

Dual-Panel Moonroof

Ultimate Seating Trim: Seat Color-Keyed Tuxedo Stripe Down the Center of the Front and Rear Seat Backs and Embroidered Lincoln Star Logo on the Front Head Restraints

The Appearance Package adds:

Luxury Sienna Colored Seating with Charcoal Black Tuxedo Seam

Black Stitching ad Lincoln Star Logo Embroidered on the Headrests

Illuminated MKS Sill Plates Showing ‘MK’ in White and ‘S’ in Red

Leather-Wrapped Steering Wheel

Upgraded Black Floor Mats with Embroidered Lincoln Star

Our test vehicle also came equipped with the $535 Active Park Assist option. At the touch of a button, the system through its ultrasonic sensors, measures and identifies a parallel parking space, and steers the car into the space while you shift, accelerate, and brake at the cars command.

Adaptive Cruise Control was another fun feature that we had the luxury of testing. When activated, the system functions like a normal cruise control system, but with one exception; the adaptive cruise control sensors detect traffic slowing, adjust your speed accordingly, and then readjust as they sense traffic clearing up. The collision warning feature of the cruise control system alerts the driver whenever it senses a potential collision with the car in front you via a ‘heads-up’ display with simulated brake lights that flash on the windshield. In the event that this warning system is nt. enough to grab the drivers attention, the brakes then pre-charge and increase brake sensitivity in order to provide full responsiveness upon the driver applying the brakes.

Compared to the competition, the 5-passenger 2010 Lincoln MKS EcoBoost sports a much more attractive interior than the STS and Genesis with the outstanding level of comfort that it provides. The car holds its own against the GS and A6 though those two cars lead the segment in terms of overall interior quality and appearance.

Performance:

The MKS EcoBoost, which comes standard with all-wheel-drive, is power by a 3.5L direct-injection twin-turbocharged EcoBoost V6 engine that produces 355-hp and a peak torque of 350 lb-ft. All this combines to give this car the power equivalency of a normally aspirated 4.6L V8 without he fuel-economy of a V6. The 17/25 mpg EPA estate on the EcoBoost actually trumps that of its standard AWD V6 sibling, which gets an EPA estimated 16/23. Over our week long fling with this car we averaged 16.4 mpg.

The 350 lb-ft of torque is consistent around the tachometer as it is available from 1,500 rpm to 5,250 rpm. This means that fast acceleration and outstanding power are available regardless of speed, no matter what gear the car may be in. Mated to a 6-speed 6F-55 SelectShift automatic transmission, 0 to 60 mph comes in 6 seconds, and speed tops out at 131 mph.

Handling in the MKS EcoBoost, which carries a curb weight if 4,276 lbs, falls short when compared to the Lexus GS and Audi A6 4.2 FSI, as its loose steering makes taking turns at higher speeds an arduous task. This can be overlooked however, when assessing the car against the Genesis 4.6 or the Cadillac STS V8.

Overall:

If you’re an enthusiast who requires superb handling and exceptional driving dynamics, it should come as no surprise that we do not recommend the MKS EcoBoost for you. However if you’re the executive type that desires luxury and appreciates strong performance figures, then we wholeheartedly recommend the 2010 Lincoln MKS EcoBoost.

Pricing for the ‘10 EcoBoost starts at $48,585. The test vehicle we were given which included the Rapid Spec 201A with Navigation and Ultimate Package, Active Park Assist, and Adaptive Cruise Control would run you about $54,000, compared to the:

Hyundai Genesis 4.6 which starts at $37,250.

Audi A6 4.2 FSI which starts at $60,950.

Cadillac STS V8 which starts at $56,345.

Lexus GS which starts $45,000.

When talking about a FoMoCo vehicle it’s hard to go through the options and features offered with car without mentioning the Microsoft SYNC system. Our test-drive 2010 Lincoln MKS EcoBoost is equipped with the SYNC system as standard. After spending a week with the SYNC system, we realized that there is a good reason that the feature has won so many awards. Almost every function from climate, to audio, to navigation to traffic and directions information can be enabled through SYNC’s voice activation feature.

Other technology features on the 2010 Lincoln MKS include: Collision Warning with Brake Support (automatically applies the brakes if it senses a possible accident), Adaptive Cruise Control, Active Park Assist (we’ll provide a video example later – it’s a very interesting feature that allows the MKS to parallel park itself), THX II-Certified audio system (one of the best we’ve heard), SIRIUS Travel Link, Adaptive HID Headlamps, Rain-Sensing Wipers, SecuriCode Keyless Entry Keypad (located on the side of the driver door), Forward and Reverse Sensing System, Reverse Camera System, Easy FuelTM Capless Fuel-Filler System, Rear Window Power Sunshade and Intelligent Access with Push Button Start.

The Adaptive Cruise Control w/Collision Mitigation and Brake Support will cost you an additional $1,310 over the sticker price, while the Active Park Assist will cost $535.

As always, make sure you ask us all the question you want answered about the 2010 Lincoln MKS EcoBoost while we’re reviewing it in the comments section below. If you want quick answers, send us a tweet at @egmCarTech. A full review will be up next week. Stay tuned.

As mentioned last week, we are driving the new 2010 Lincoln MKS EcoBoost this week. Today we’re going to give you a look around the interior of the new 2010 MKS. Step inside, and you’ll notice right away that Ford has worked very hard to step up the interior quality and design of their cars. The MKS features leather seats, leather upholstery, very comfortable seats, ergonomically designed controls and a wonderful SYNC system and navigation with SIRIUS traffic link.

The 2010 Lincoln MKS comfortably seats 5 individuals with a lot of rear leg room. Standard on all Lincoln MKS models are heated and cooled 12-way power driver and passenger seats. Also standard are heated rear seats.

The aluminum carbon fiber imitation plastic trim also adds a nice touch.

As to answer the questions we received so far…

Bennie: Eco boost is said to have the power of a V8 but, what is the sound track like?

The 3.5L 355-hp V6 twin-turbocharged doesn’t have a loud track like sound. It’s very quiet but offers outstanding acceleration. You do hear the turbo kicking in, which is a nice noise.

Pat: … what kind of fuel-economy are you averaging? I’m guessing it should be around 15 mpg?

EPA estimated fuel-economy for the 2010 MKS EcoBoost comes in at 17/25 mpg (city/highway). We’re averaging 17.3 mpgs right now.

As always, stay in touch and we’ll provide you with more updates as the week goes on. Make sure you as us questions through Twitter for a faster response.

We have just taking delivery of the new 2010 Lincoln MKS EcoBoost and I (Omar Rana) will be driving it around for the next week providing you with daily updates followed by a full review.

First Impressions: I really like the design and quality of the MKS overall – it stands out from the crowd and immediately demands attention. Ride quality of the MKS is also very solid and smooth. Of course, this by no means is considered a performance or sports car; however, the 355-hp 3.5L V6 twin-turbocharged EcoBoost makes driving the MKS EcoBoost a lot of fun. Not to mention, it takes sharp corners fairly well. Pricing for the all-wheel-drive 2010 Lincoln MKS EcoBoost starts at $47,760.

Lincoln is offering luxury crossover customers a fresh new choice with the 2010 Lincoln MKT, a three-row crossover that delivers the optimal blend of distinctive design, interior spaciousness and craftsmanship, fuel economy, and advanced driver aid and safety technologies.

The Lincoln MKT joins the two-row Lincoln MKX midsize premium crossover, the sporty Lincoln MKS luxury sedan launched in 2008 and the midsize Lincoln MKZ in earning coveted IIHS Top Safety Pick ratings, building on Ford Motor Company’s safety leadership.

Technology under the skin
The Lincoln MKT features an advanced structural safety system that combines octagonal front frame rails, tunnel rails and support members that are designed to absorb and redirect crash forces away from the passenger compartment.

Lincoln MKT also includes Side Protection And Cabin Enhancement Architecture (SPACE®) to optimize side-impact occupant protection. The SPACE system integrates a hydroformed high-strength steel tube in the floor that runs the width of the vehicle from B-pillar to B-pillar and reinforcements along the rocker panels to help protect passengers in side-impact incidents.

Lincoln MKT also features Ford’s enhanced Personal Safety System™, combining multiple technologies to tailor the air bag package and safety belt functions to the individual passenger and the accident circumstances. The system can identify variables, such as severity of the crash, weight of the individual passenger and safety belt usage to adjust air bag deployment force.

Additional Lincoln MKT safety technologies include:

* Safety Canopy® is Ford’s exclusive side-impact protection system employing side curtain air bags to help protect front and outboard rear passengers in both rollover and side-impact crashes.
* Belt-Minder®, a reminder technology for driver and front seat passenger, takes over after the initial federally required safety belt reminder stops chiming to encourage usage of safety belts, the No. 1 life-saving device in automobiles.
* SOS Post-Crash Alert System™unlocks the vehicle doors and activates the horn and emergency flashers in the event air bags are deployed.
* MyKey™ allows parents or other concerned owners to restrict certain Lincoln MKT features when in the hands of a MyKey driver. MyKey encourages safety belt usage, provides earlier low-fuel warnings, engages applicable driver aid systems, and sounds speed chimes at preset levels while limiting audio system volume and top vehicle speed.

Lincoln MKT also delivers abundant driver-awareness and security technologies including:

* Adaptive Cruise Control (ACC) uses radar to detect moving vehicles immediately ahead and modify cruising speed if necessary.

* Collision Warning with Brake Support, enabled by ACC, provides the driver with a “heads-up” display that flashes on the windshield when the system senses slower moving traffic ahead. If the driver doesn’t respond, the system will pre-charge the brakes to prepare the vehicle for a more aggressive stop to help avoid some of the most common rear-end accidents.
* SecuriCode™ Keyless Entry Keypad uses a touch-sensitive surface allowing the driver to enter a five-digit code to unlock the doors.
* Adaptive Headlamps with standard High-Intensity Discharge (HID) Lamps enhance nighttime visibility. Sensors monitor Lincoln MKT speed and steering wheel input to engage headlamp movement to increase the driver’s field of vision.
* Auto High Beams coupled with Adaptive Headlamps enhance nighttime visibility by switching to high intensity when no other vehicles are in range.
* Rain-Sensing Wipers use an optical sensing system to gauge precipitation and automatically activate and adjust the wipers.
* Blind Spot Information System (BLIS®) with Cross Traffic Alert uses two multiple-beam radars in the rear quarter panels (one per side) for two different – but important – purposes. BLIS checks the defined blind spot zone, which is about 10 feet from the back of the bumper to the outside mirrors. When a vehicle is detected, an amber light, in the outside mirror of whichever side that vehicle is on, lights up. CTA notifies the driver of impending traffic when backing out of a parking spot and warns the driver when a vehicle is detected within three car widths of either side of the vehicle. As with BLIS, the driver is warned with a beep and light in the outside mirror on the side of the traffic.
* Rear View Camera System uses the center stack-mounted touch/navigation screen for projection and activates upon reverse gear engagement.
* Lincoln SYNC®is an award-winning voice-activated communications and entertainment system developed by Ford and Microsoft that fully integrates Bluetooth®-enabled mobile phones and digital media players into the vehicle. SYNC incorporates 911 Assist™, which can notify a local 911 emergency operator in the event of an air bag deployment when a cell phone is properly paired, turned on and connected to SYNC, and when the vehicle has battery power.

FoMoCo is all about going global and going small – the same applies for its luxury brand Lincoln. With the Navigator selling poorly, Lincoln is now considering vehicles as small as the Ford Focus and a compact crossover due out in 2011. The two would be the smallest Lincoln models in the brands current lineup and unless a coupe based on the Ford Mustang materializes, Lincoln will walk away from the rear-wheel-drive segment when the Town Car dies in 2011.

As of right now, most of Lincoln’s development team is focused on a compact car based on the next-generation global Ford Focus platform. While product chief Derrick Kuzak says that Lincoln has room in its lineup for a front-wheel-drive compact car, such a car is far from being green-lighted by executives, reports Automotive News.

Lincoln unveiled the Concept C at the 2009 Detroit Motor Show with a 1.6L EcoBoost 4-cylinder engine under the hood. It was the first time we’ve seen anything official from Ford regarding a 4-cylinder EcoBoost engine.

A compact crossover for Lincoln is more than definite for the brand. A model is currently under development for the 2012 model year and is said to share the underpinnings with the next-generation Ford Kuga for Europe and the replacements for the Ford Escape and Mercury Mariner.

The model is expected to be produced in Louisville, Ky.

As for the Navigator – well let’s just say that no major updates are planned – in fact, the model could be discontinued altogether at the end of 2011.

Lincoln signature design
The new 2010 Lincoln MKZ was launched this past spring and features Lincoln signature design elements, including the split-wing grille and thinner wraparound headlamps for a wider, sportier look. The Lincoln MKZ’s presence is enhanced by available 17-inch machined aluminum or chrome wheels or 18-inch polished aluminum wheels which are included in the Sport Appearance Package with sport-tuned suspension.

Inside, MKZ’s cabin reflects an even more upscale look featuring genuine aluminum and wood depending on the trim package, an all-new instrument panel and detailed touches including new welcome lighting, chimes and tuxedo stitching on luxury Bridge of Weir leather-trimmed seats.

This world-renowned luxury leather from Scotland, pioneered on the classic Lincoln Continental Mark II and used on the Lincoln MKS, trims the MKZ seats. The MKZ leather is unembossed, allowing the natural beauty and character of the grain to shine through. The leather is milled for up to 12 hours to ensure a buttery soft feel.

Faster engine performance, strong fuel economy
The award-winning 3.5-liter V-6 Duratec engine powers the 2010 Lincoln MKZ, delivering 263 horsepower at 6,250 rpm and 249 ft.-lb. of torque at 4,500 rpm on regular gasoline while still remaining among the leaders in fuel economy in its segment with EPA-estimated 18 mpg city and 27 mpg highway for the front-wheel drive MKZ.

The 3.5-liter uses a compact, lightweight dual-overhead cam valvetrain for peak power and smooth operation at high rpms. This engine also incorporates intake variable cam timing to optimize valve timing for a smooth idle and an impressively broad torque curve with good power. Powertrain performance is improved dramatically, with 0-60 mph times dropping from 7.7 to 7.1 seconds.

A high 10.3:1 compression ratio and aluminum cylinder heads designed for high air flow and optimized combustion help complete the package, supporting the engine’s ability to deliver great performance and fuel economy along with low emissions. The six-speed transmission is outfitted with lower early gears for better acceleration and taller high gears for better highway mileage.

The six-speed SelectShift AutomaticTM transmission comes available in both front-wheel drive and all-wheel drive. Customers can select a manual mode for enhanced sportiness, with downshifts locked out to help protect the engine from over-revving. The “enhanced overdrive cancel” mode locks out the fifth and sixth gears, allows shifts at higher speed for more engine braking and downshifts for “grade assist” functionality.

Better ride comfort
The 2010 Lincoln MKZ was significantly revised and uniquely tuned for ride comfort. The rear suspension lower control arm attachment point was changed to move the roll center closer to the center of gravity, which improves ride-handling characteristics. The turning radius has been reduced as well. Also added is a new hydraulic variable-flow steering pump that changes the flow rate to give better response at higher speeds and ease parking efforts at low speeds.

The Lincoln MKZ’s available All-Wheel Drive (AWD) system has been retuned for better traction and lower noise, vibration and harshness (NVH). The system uses an electro-mechanical clutch and employs two basic modes of torque transfer – pre-emptive torque (before wheel slip) and slip-control torque (after wheel slip). This dual system helps give the driver confidence in a variety of situations, while the suspension has been specially tuned to be more neutral when cornering.

The AWD system works in harmony with brake traction control to deliver more confidence to Lincoln MKZ customers. Ford’s AdvanceTrac® Electronic Stability Control – standard on every new Lincoln MKZ – helps keep drivers in command as well.

The MKZ sport version includes special sport suspension tuning with stiffer springs and larger stabilizer bars, 18-inch Euroflange polished wheels, unique darkened grille, darkened headlamps and an interior with contrasting piping and special appliqués.

“The driving experience has been improved, delivering a better ride and vehicle control,” said J.D. Shanahan, chief engineer. “Ride enhancements, a new sport package, new technologies, the signature Lincoln design and a strong quality story help the new Lincoln MKZ set a new standard in midsize luxury sedans.”

Class-leading interior quietness
Refinements to the powertrain are complemented by improvements to cabin noise levels. Ford research shows the 2009 MKZ beats the 2009 model year Lexus ES350 and Acura TL in key interior quietness attributes such as road noise at 30 mph. For the 2010 model year, the Lincoln MKZ is even quieter.

NVH improvements include:

* A new acoustic laminated windshield featuring a layer of sound-absorbent vinyl sandwiched between two sheets of glass to soften noise levels
* Thicker rear backlight for improved wind noise
* Improved body/door sealing to reduce wind noise
* New expandable stuffers in the fenders and pillars
* Constrained layer damping material on the entire floor to reduce road noise
* An all-new acoustic headliner to further deaden interior noise

Technology and information at your fingertips
The new Lincoln MKZ is more than just a pretty face and striking new interior. New technology and convenience features help Lincoln’s new midsize sedan stand out, too. Available later this summer is the next generation of SYNC® with Traffic, Directions and Information.

This newest application provides personalized, real-time information to help drivers get to where they’re going with information they need – new services come with no monthly subscription fees for the first three years to the original vehicle owner.

Other standard or available technologies on the 2010 Lincoln MKZ include:

* Segment-exclusive, first-in-class Blind Spot Information System (BLIS®) with Cross Traffic Alert (CTA), which can help make navigating traffic and parking lots easier
* Voice-Activated Navigation System with SIRIUS Travel LinkTM
* Easy Fuel<sup>TM</sup> Capless Fuel-Filler
* Keyless Entry Keypad
* Reverse Camera System
* Ambient Lighting System
* THX® II Premium Certified Audio System with 5.1 Surround Sound
* Rain-sensing wipers
* Adaptive HID headlamps
* SOS Post Crash Alert SystemTM

Top safety rating from Insurance Institute for Highway Safety
The new Lincoln MKZ recently received a Top Safety Pick rating from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS). To earn a Top Safety Pick rating, a vehicle must receive a rating of “good” in offset frontal impact, side impact and rear impact evaluations and offer electronic stability control. The structure of the Lincoln MKZ helps it withstand intrusion in many accidents, including the most common frontal and side impacts.

The tailor-welded B-pillars between the front and rear doorframes are designed to help channel energy below the level of the occupants. At the torso level and above, the structure helps prevent intrusion into the passenger compartment.

Front and side-protection elements on the Lincoln MKZ include:

* First use on a Ford vehicle of dual-phase, high-strength steel rails on the front end;
* Two energy absorbing foam blocks between the inner door panels and interior trim, aligned with the occupants’ chest and hip;
* Side-intrusion beams inside the door, anchored at the hinge and latch areas;
* Tailor-welded steel in the B-pillar structure with extra thickness – nearly a quarter inch of solid steel – above the beltline; and
* Front-seat side air bags for front occupants and side-curtain air bags for head protection in both rows.

The 2010 Lincoln MKZ carries a starting manufacturer’s suggested retail price of $34,965, including destination and delivery, excluding tax, title and license fees.

In attempt to prove to us that fuel-efficient cars can be fun, the folks over at Edmunds decided to take the new 2010 Lincoln MKS EcoBoost to a drag strip in Milan, Michigan. After a couple of runs, the MKS EcoBoost kept returning a quarter-mile run in 14 seconds at 104 mph.

To put those figures in perspective, the 2006 Shelby GT-H Mustang ran a 13.9 at 101.1 mph while the 2010 Mustang GT ran it in the mid-13s.

The 2010 Lincoln MKS is powered by a 3.5L EcoBoost V6 twin-turbocharged, direct-injected engine making 355-hp with a peak torque of 350 lb-ft. Fuel-economy is estimated at 17/24 mpg (city/highway).

Press Release:

ECOBOOST DEBUT: FUEL-EFFICIENT NEW V-6 ENGINE GIVES FLAGSHIP LINCOLN MKS THE POWER OF A V-8

- The 3.5-liter EcoBoostTM V-6 engine, the first V-6 direct-injection twin-turbocharged engine produced in North America, makes its debut in the 2010 Lincoln MKS
- With the fuel economy of a V-6, the 3.5-liter EcoBoost engine delivers an impressive 355 horsepower and 350 ft.-lb. of torque across a broad rpm range – from 1,500 rpm to 5,250 rpm – giving the Lincoln MKS the power of a normally aspirated 4.6-liter V-8
- The new 3.5-liter engine is the first in a wave of EcoBoost engines coming as part of Ford’s strategy to bring affordable fuel efficiency improvements to millions. By 2013, more than 90 percent of Ford’s North American nameplates will be available with EcoBoost technology

ROMEO, Mich., May 14, 2009 – Style, technology and power. With the addition of the all-new EcoBoostTM engine, the new 2010 Lincoln MKS delivers the luxury and comfort standards unique to Lincoln with a powertrain that produces a compelling combination of V-8 power and V-6 fuel economy.

The new Lincoln MKS is the first Ford Motor Company vehicle to introduce a premium twin-turbocharged 3.5-liter EcoBoost V-6 engine for the 2010 model year. By 2013, more than 90 percent of Ford’s North American nameplates will be available with EcoBoost technology.

“We are committed to delivering fuel economy leadership in every new vehicle,” said Derrick Kuzak, Ford’s group vice president of Global Product Development. “We do this with affordable technology that can be applied to the widest number of vehicles. EcoBoost is an important component of that goal.

“The beauty of EcoBoost is that it enables us to downsize for fuel efficiency, yet boost for power. We’re able to decrease the size of the available engine – such as installing a V-6 versus a V-8 – yet boost the power using turbocharging to deliver similar power and torque of that larger engine.”

The 3.5-liter EcoBoost V-6 of the all-wheel-drive 2010 Lincoln MKS produces 355 horsepower at 5,500 rpm and 350 ft.-lb. of torque from 1,500 to 5,250 rpm and can be run on regular fuel. The Lincoln MKS with EcoBoost will deliver at least 17 mpg city and at least 24 mpg highway.

“We’re delighted with how well the Lincoln MKS has been received. Customers have really responded to the vehicle’s balanced combination of luxury, comfort and performance,” said Pete Reyes, chief nameplate engineer. “Adding the 3.5-liter EcoBoost V-6 is another great enhancement to our luxury sedan. We now can deliver V-8 power without sacrificing fuel economy.”

Standard on Lincoln MKS with EcoBoost are 19-inch premium painted aluminum wheels, steering-wheel paddle shifters, six-speed SelectShift AutomaticTM transmission, all-wheel drive, Intelligent Access with Push Button Start, ambient lighting, adaptive HID headlamps with Auto Highbeam, rain-sensing wipers and rear-window power sunshade.

An MKS EcoBoost Appearance Package will have late availability, offering customers a more-aggressive and sporty look that further differentiates the Lincoln MKS from other competitors. The MKS EcoBoost Appearance Package seamlessly combines the power and fuel economy from this new engine technology with the high luxury standards pioneered by Lincoln.

Highlights of the MKS EcoBoost Appearance Package include:

* Luxury seats in Sienna with Charcoal Black Tuxedo Seam
* Black stitching and Lincoln Star logos embroidered on the headrest
* Illuminated MKS sill plates – the “MK” is in white and the “S” is in red
* Leather-wrapped steering wheel
* Upgraded black floor mats with embroidered Lincoln Star
* Unique exterior appointments, including EcoBoost badging, distinctive grille, front lip spoiler, rear fascia lower, side rockers and door cladding, decklid lip spoiler with chrome insert and modified MKS decklid badge (”S” in red)
* 20-inch chrome wheels

The EcoBoost program is part of Ford’s ongoing and wide-ranging initiative to deliver innovative fuel-efficient powertrain systems with horsepower and torque performance found in larger-displacement engines.

“Our EcoBoost engines offer more power and better fuel economy,” said Brett Hinds, EcoBoost design manager. “It’s all part of Ford’s strategy to bring adaptable powertrain technology to all kinds of vehicles and all kinds of lifestyles. This technology is affordable and applicable to all gasoline engines.”

The turbochargers recover energy from the exhaust that otherwise would be wasted and put it back in the engine to gain efficiency. Simply, the turbocharging system puts more air into the engine for more power. A compressor increases or “boosts” the pressure of the air entering the engine. An air-to-air intercooler is used to cool the compressed intake air before it enters the combustion chamber. This allows the air to be even more densely packed for optimal performance, contributing to more-efficient fuel burn and fuel efficiency.

The twin parallel turbochargers, which are water-cooled and operate simultaneously, combine with a direct-injection fuel system to instantly produce power when the driver pushes down on the accelerator pedal.

The high-pressure fuel pump operates at 2,150 psi – more than 35 times the norm seen in a conventional V-6 engine. The high-pressure pump is a cam-driven mechanical pump with a single piston and an electronic valve that controls how much fuel is routed into the fuel rails to the injectors.

As demands on the twin-turbocharged 3.5-liter EcoBoost V-6 engine are increased, the control system responds to maintain optimal combustion, timing and injection duration.

On each stroke, six individual jets spray fuel directly into the combustion chamber, mixing with the incoming air. “By bringing the fuel injector right into the combustion chamber, there’s no delay from the time you inject the fuel to when it’s used by the engine,” Hinds said. The fuel injectors are located on the side of the combustion chamber. When the fuel is injected into the cylinder, it evaporates and cools the air that’s been inducted into the cylinder.

“Another benefit of our direct-injection method is that it cools the air right where you’re going to burn it,” Hinds said. “This action both improves the breathing of the engine and minimizes knocking.”

The direct injection of fuel into the cylinder also helps provide a well-mixed air-fuel charge, increasing engine efficiency. Direct injection provides several benefits in terms of fuel burn and lower emissions.

“Because the fuel is directly introduced into the combustion chamber, you don’t get fuel wetting the combustion wall like with port fuel injection, you don’t saturate the ports and you don’t get droplets that might recombine and add to saturation,” Hinds said. “By injecting fuel directly into the combustion chamber and under high pressure, the fuel can be directed to exactly where we want it to be for a given combustion cycle.”

The spray pattern for the fuel was optimized after extensive computer modeling work, with the angle of how the fuel is sprayed key to the process. “The better combustion process is a big advantage of direct injection,” Hinds said. “In a port fuel system, at key off it’s possible to have fuel on the walls of the intake port, which migrates to the top of the valve and puddles. So when you key on, you get that emissions spike. Direct injection is much cleaner from that standpoint.”

Turbo lag virtually eliminated
The simultaneous turbocharger operation paired with the direct-injection system help to virtually eliminate turbo lag, one of the main reasons turbocharger technology was not previously more widely used. The dual-turbocharger setup has several advantages over previous turbocharging systems, including:

* The dual turbochargers are smaller and spool up quicker, allowing the 3.5-liter EcoBoost V-6 engine to reach peak torque faster. The turbochargers can spin in excess of 170,000 rpm. By comparison, the redline for the engine is approximately 6,200 rpm
* The turbochargers are packaged adjacent to the cylinder block and have improved mounting providing NVH (noise, vibration, harshness) improvements

“The two turbochargers both operate identically over the speed range of the engine – one gets its energy from the left bank and the other gets its energy from the right bank, with both feeding together into the engine,” Hinds said. “Both spin immediately and produce boost, even at low engine speeds.”

The turbochargers are designed for a life cycle of 150,000 miles or 10 years.

“Our testing is far, far more harsh than could be achieved in the real world,” Hinds. “In an extreme situation, a customer might be able to hit peak power for about 10 seconds – probably not even that much. We test at peak power for hundreds of hours to ensure we can reach our durability and reliability goals.”

The turbocharger impellers are only about the size of an orange, but help provide a big performance advantage to customers. Hinds describes the torque response in terms of linear acceleration – power whenever you need it.

“You get peak torque across a very wide engine speed range,” he said. “It’s available when you pull away from a stoplight or pass someone on a secondary road at a comparatively low speed. You don’t need to wind up the engine to get performance out of it. It’s there all the time.”

Turbocharger “whoosh” is mitigated by electronically controlled anti-surge valves, which proactively relieve the boost in the intake, which can range up to 12 psi. Careful software calibrations manage the pressures in the intake manifold.

“We control the boost to make sure that customers don’t recognize when the boost is building,” Hinds said. “As the turbochargers spool up, the electronic control system takes over. Our active wastegate control along with the throttle controls the boost and torque levels very precisely and the customer perceives a continuous delivery of torque.”

Extensive durability tests on the twin-turbocharged 3.5-liter EcoBoost V-6 engine ensure it will excel in all conditions. Start-up tests, with a wide variety of fuels, were made in conditions ranging from minus 40 to 110 degrees Fahrenheit. Altitude testing up to 12,000 feet in Colorado also was performed.

“The direct-injection fuel system allows us some real opportunities in terms of optimizing cold start for both emissions and robustness,” Hinds said. “We have multiple injections for each combustion event, and we can essentially tune where those injections should take place to deliver the strongest start possible with the lowest emissions.”

New, dedicated transmission and SelectShift complement EcoBoost
Mated to the 3.5-liter EcoBoost V-6 engine is the 6-speed 6F-55 SelectShift AutomaticTM transmission, which is dedicated to the twin-turbocharger engine. The 6F-55 transmission was developed to specifically respond to the increased torque demands of the EcoBoost V-6 engine. Upgrades were made to the transmission’s friction material in response to the higher shift energies, and a new torque converter has been optimized for performance and fuel economy.

The 2010 Lincoln MKS driveline combines the high-capacity 6F-55 SelectShift Automatic transmission with a sophisticated torque-sensing All-Wheel Drive System. These components work in harmony to deliver ample traction when putting EcoBoost power on the road. The six-speed transmission offers a wide array of gears to enable spirited acceleration, yet comfortable high-speed cruising.

“We’ve upgraded the gear sets to handle the increased torque,” said Joe Baum, powertrain team leader. “We’ve also adjusted the final drive ratio and matched the gear ratios to provide the optimum performance and fuel economy.

“Our final drive ratio is 2.77. With a lower final drive ratio, the engine spins slower at highway speeds, which helps save fuel. And with all the torque, the Lincoln MKS still delivers good low-speed launch performance.”

SelectShift provides conventional automatic operation or a manual shift mode that gives the driver complete control over gear selection. For performance-minded drivers, paddle controls allow “match-rev” downshifts and will hold manually selected gears for precise control. Intuitively operated, a squeeze on either paddle will deliver an economical upshift under acceleration, while a gentle push forward brings a smooth downshift, synchronizing the engine and transmission speeds for responsive and positive engagement.

The All-Wheel Drive System engages automatically and unobtrusively. The unit contains an advanced array of internal electromechanical clutches to efficiently distribute torque to the wheels with optimum traction. Standard all-wheel drive allows the new Lincoln MKS to efficiently deliver its high performance to the pavement under a wide variety of conditions.

Power to the drive wheels, not the steering wheel, means better mileage
Unique to the Lincoln MKS with EcoBoost package is Electric Power Steering (EPS), which offers several customer benefits and enables several technologies.

First, because unlike the common hydraulic-powered systems that continuously draw power from the engine, EPS draws power from an independent electric motor only as needed. Customers will see about a half-mile per gallon improvement with vehicles equipped with EPS systems compared with those with conventional hydraulic steering systems. EPS also improves steering feel at low speeds and provides confident, precise steering on the highway.

Two technologies enabled by EPS are Active Park Assist and Pull Drift Compensation, further enhancing the unique combination of power and technology found in the Lincoln MKS with EcoBoost.

One harmonious system
Careful powertrain system management ensures the engine, turbochargers and transmission work together harmoniously. The Lincoln MKS team also was careful to give customers an exhaust note from the 3.5-liter EcoBoost V-6 that was pleasing but not overpowering.

“With its elegant styling, wide suite of convenience technology and incomparable ride, the Lincoln MKS is an outstanding luxury sedan,” Reyes said. “We’re pleased and proud to add the 3.5-liter EcoBoost V-6 to an already-great car.”

Pricing for the 2010 Lincoln MKS with EcoBoost starts at $47,760, excluding destination and delivery.

The Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) announced today that the Mercedes-BEnz R-Class (apparently seen as a large SUV) and the Lincoln MKZ midsize luxury sedan have received the 2009 Top Safety Pick Award.

“To qualify for Top Safety Pick, a vehicle must earn the highest rating of good in the Institute’s front, side, and rear tests and be equipped with electronic stability control.” Of course, electronic stability control has to be a standard option to qualify for a Top Safety Pick award, which both the R-Class and the MKZ have.

IIHS said that the Top Safety Pick designation applies to 2009 R-Class models built after September, 2008, and 2010 MKZ models.

Press Release:

2010 LINCOLN MKZ: MORE STANDARD LUXURY AND SEGMENT-EXCLUSIVE SAFETY, STARTS UNDER $35,000

    - The 2010 Lincoln MKZ offers more standard luxury features compared to other midsize luxury sedans, such as the Lexus ES350 and Cadillac CTS
– A new Sport Appearance Package is available for the 2010 Lincoln MKZ that offers a variety of custom details, including 18-inch chrome wheels
– Base price of $34,965 includes destination and delivery

Dearborn, March 18, 2009 – The 2010 Lincoln MKZ offers customers more standard luxury and segment-exclusive safety features for their money, with a starting price of $34,965, including destination and delivery.

Compared with other midsize luxury sedans – such as the Lexus ES350 and Cadillac CTS – the MKZ comes with more standard luxury features, such as Bridge of Weir leather seats, genuine wood trim, heated and cooled front seats, the popular SYNC entertainment and connectivity system, a reverse sensing system and driver multi-adjustable power seat.

The 2010 Lincoln MKZ also has features not offered by competitors in this segment, such as the all-new Blind Spot Information System (BLIS™) with Cross Traffic Alert (CTA).
“Customers universally are surprised when they get into a competing vehicle and find out that they have to pay more for luxury features, such as premium leather seats,” said Jonathan Richards, Lincoln MKZ Marketing manager. “That’s what sets the MKZ apart from the competition. It comes standard with all the features you would expect from a world class entry-level luxury sedan.”

The front-wheel-drive MKZ has a base price of $34,965, and the all-wheel drive model is available for a base price of $36,855. Pricing on both models includes destination and delivery.

Ultra-Quiet Ride
The new MKZ offers an ultra-quiet cabin, a feature that consumers – especially luxury car shoppers – undeniably connect to overall product quality and satisfaction levels, according to vehicle studies from third-party voices, such as J.D. Power and Associates.

According to Ford research, the 2010 MKZ also beats out the current Lexus ES350 in key interior quietness attributes, such as road noise at 30 mph and wind noise at 80 mph.

The interior quietness coupled with the premium THX II Certified 5.1 Surround sound system available in the MKZ offers customers an exceptional in-car audio experience, says Richards.

“This pairing represents one more example of why customers are now equating the Lincoln brand with elegant, modern design, unparalleled comfort, unrivaled features and best-in-class quality,” he said.

Segment-Exclusive Safety Features
The new Lincoln MKZ offers segment-exclusive safety features, including first-in-class Blind Spot Information System (BLIS™) with Cross Traffic Alert (CTA), which makes navigating traffic and parking lots safer and easier. BLIS tracks vehicles in the blind-spot zones on either side of the vehicle using two multiple-beam radar modules behind the rear fenders, and CTA uses the BLIS radar sensors to alert the driver to approaching traffic while in reverse and backing out of a parking spot.

New Sport Appearance Package
Luxury car buyers who want a sportier-looking ride can opt for the Sport Appearance Package, which is new for the 2010 model year. It offers special sport suspension tuning with stiffer springs and larger stabilizer bars; 18-inch Euroflange polished wheels; unique grille, body-color door handles and darkened headlamps; and an interior with tuxedo seam seat patterns, contrasting piping, upgraded floor mats and aluminum appliqués.

Even after being questioned for its American Top Picks in 2008, Consumer Reports has once again revealed its American Top Picks for 2009. The company feels that some new cars feel strongly about buying an American-made vehicle and that means they look for the best product for their needs.

To qualify for a Top Pick, a vehicle must score high in its segment and must have electronic stability control (ESC). Consumer Reports also looks for reliability data which must indicate average or better reliability.

Some of you may have liked the new Lincoln C Concept and some of you may have thought that it’s just plain weird looking. However, besides hinting at a new segment that Lincoln may compete in sometime in the near future, the Lincoln C Concept signals at a new powertrain for the next-generation Ford Focus that could boost fuel-economy by as much as 23 percent.

The current U.S. Ford Focus is powered by a 2.0L naturally aspirated 4-cylinder engine that allows for a fuel-economy of up to 35 mpg. The Lincoln C is powered by a 180-hp, 1.6L, 4-cylinder EcoBoost that will return an estimated 43 mpg on the highway when mated to a 6-speed dual-clutch transmission.

The Lincoln C is built on the Focus’s next-generation platform. According to Automotive News, while Ford has yet to comment on the fuel-economy of the next Focus, executives say that they have serious intent to use the powertrain from the Lincoln C.

The next-generation Ford Focus will arrive in late 2010.

ALL-NEW 2010 LINCOLN MKT DELIVERS MORE FEATURES, CLASS-LEADING FUEL ECONOMY FOR UNDER $45,000

- The 2010 Lincoln MKT, equipped with an extensive list of enticing equipment, will arrive this summer priced at $44,995 (including destination) for the front-wheel drive model; equipped with a premium engine and all-wheel drive, prices start at $49,995
- The Lincoln MKT offers two fuel-efficient engine choices: a proven 3.7-liter V-6 designed to deliver an estimated 268 horsepower or a new Twin turbo 3.5-liter V-6 with EcoBoost™ able to deliver an estimated 355 horsepower while delivering best in class fuel economy
- Further growing the brand’s momentum and joining the all-new flagship Lincoln MKS sedan and updated 2010 Lincoln MKZ, the 2010 Lincoln MKT three-row crossover will be available in dealer showrooms in late summer 2009

DETROIT, Jan. 14, 2009 – Lincoln MKT, a distinctive new premium crossover, will be available in late summer 2009 with a long list of standard comfort, convenience and technology features that make it an exceptional value.

Starting at $44,995 for the front-wheel-drive model, the three-row Lincoln MKT brings to the luxury market standard luxury features, quality interior appointments and design, class-leading fuel economy and a distinctive new exterior that embodies a fresh interpretation of Lincoln design DNA.

Similar to the flagship Lincoln MKS sedan, the new three-row Lincoln will offer customers an enticing mix of inviting luxury and useful technology. The base model will come well equipped, with a list of standard features that include:

- SelectShift six-speed automatic transmission with paddle shifts
- Eight-inch, color touch-screen for audio and HVAC control
- Rear view camera
- 20-GB hard drive for music jukebox music storage
- Intelligent Access with Push Button Start
- SecuriCode™ Keyless Entry Keypad
- Adaptive Headlamps with High-Intensity Discharge (HID) Lamps
- Auto High Beams
- Rain-Sensing Wipers
- Reverse-sensing parking assist system
- Power opening / closing rear liftgate
- 12-way powered, heated-and-cooled front row seating
- Adjustable pedals
- Heated second-row seats
- Three-zone HVAC
- Ambient lighting
- Panoramic Vista Roof featuring two large glass panels
- 19-inch Premium Painted aluminum wheels
- Integrated spotter mirrors
- And a comprehensive, complementary list of active and passive safety features designed to help protect both driver and passengers.

In addition to a front-wheel drive powertrain, the Lincoln MKT will also be offered with all-wheel-drive. The AWD model with the normally-aspirated, 3.7-liter engine is expected to carry a starting price of $46,990 when it arrives in dealerships this summer. Compared to a similarly priced Acura MDX (the segment leading in sales volume), the Lincoln MKT offers far more interior space, better highway fuel economy and features consumers want, such as adjustable pedals, rain-sensing wipers, auto high beams and the connectivity of SYNC.

The 2010 Lincoln MKT will be available with a premium, 3.5-liter V-6 EcoBoost powertrain as well, and all EcoBoost models will be fitted with AWD. The direct-injection, twin-turbo, 355 horsepower engine is expected to deliver not only best-in-class power but also best-in-class highway fuel economy, superior to both the Acura MDX and Audi Q7. The 355-hp Lincoln MKT will have a starting price of $49,995. Acura does not offer a premium engine upgrade in the three-row MDX.

Lincoln MKT buyers looking for more luxury and convenience features can choose the Elite Package, priced at $5000. The Elite package includes:

- Adaptive Cruise Control (ACC): A system that allows the driver to set and maintain vehicle speed, while radar monitors traffic ahead. This optional system automatically adjusts speed and slows the vehicle to maintain the set distance behind traffic ahead.
- Collision Warning with Brake Support: A system enabled by Adaptive Cruise Control that provides the driver with a “head-up” display that flashes on the windshield when the system senses slower moving traffic ahead. If the driver doesn’t respond, the system will pre-charge the brakes to prepare the vehicle for a more aggressive stop.
- Blind Spot Information System (BLIS™): BLIS is a radar sensor on the outboard rear quarter panel used to monitor the traditional blind spot areas and can notify the driver with a warning indicator light in the corresponding side view mirror.
- Cross Traffic Alert: Utilizing BLIS sensors, the Lincoln Cross Traffic Alert helps detect approaching traffic when backing out of a parking space. When the vehicle is in reverse and senses traffic, mirror warning lights illuminate and audible signals sound.
- Voice-activated Navigation: An advanced, next-generation system with an internal hard-drive for map and point-of-interest information storage and an updated THX audio system with exclusive new feature – Neural Surround – that helps improve audio reproduction from compressed digital formats.
- Power-opening Panoramic Vista Roof

Stand-alone options available on the 2010 Lincoln MKT include:

- Active-Park Assist: Available on EcoBoost-equipped vehicles, this Lincoln-exclusive system literally “steers” the Lincoln MKT into a parallel parking spot while coaching the driver through conventional throttle and braking inputs.
Active-Park Assist employs an ultrasonic-based sensing system, as opposed to video camera-reliant competitive offerings, to detect edges of adjacent objects to calculate optimized trajectory and making hands-free parallel parking a breeze. It works at the touch of a button, requiring less driver programming and reducing the risk of selecting an inappropriately sized parking space.
- 20-inch polished wheels
- Dual, headrest mounted DVD family entertainment system
- Second-row, heated-and-cooled bucket seats with power lumbar
- Second-row, console-mounted refrigerator
- Class III trailer-towing capability

A full-equipped, twin turbo 355-horspower Lincoln MKT is expected to cost approximately $55,000, placing it thousands less than a comparably equipped Audi Q7. In addition, the Lincoln offers better fuel economy, more interior space and class and exclusive features like Active-Park Assist not available on the Audi Q7.

As demand for large sedans cars shrinks, FoMoCo has drooped plans for new rear-wheel-drive based sedans. According to design chief J Mays, plans for a rear-wheel-drive Ford and Lincoln have been shelved for now.

“We’ve got other priorities at the moment,” Mays told Automotive News. “We’re going down a path right now that is all about fuel efficiency, and we’ve got a lot to do about that. So we’re not talking about rear-wheel drive.”

About a year ago Alan Mullaly and product chief Derrick Kuzak confirmed that Ford is working on a rear-wheel-drive sedan for both – the Lincoln and Ford brand. During the later part of last year, Kuzak told the media that Ford was rethinking the program.

It was reported that sales of the rear-wheel-drive Ford cars would begin in 2013 with a platform coming from a large car developed for Australia.
